Eagle Radio Spring Auction Sale Bill 

Construction has begun on new amenities at Frye Lake and Avocet Lake near Hyannis. If all goes according to schedule, anglers will have an easier time launching boats at both locations by the end of the summer.

Joe Rydell, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission northwest district fisheries manager, said the two Sandhills lakes on state wildlife management areas are easily accessible from paved highways, but getting on them for fishing and hunting is often challenging because of fluctuating water levels, thick shoreline vegetation and a gentle slope not conducive for launching boats.

For both locations, Game and Parks has hired contractors to improve the parking areas and install concrete boat ramps and docks compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. A new vault toilet also will be installed at Frye.

The new ramps will be built on elevated peninsulas that extend into the lake, which will be functional for varying water levels.

The construction is beginning at 120-acre Avocet Lake just east of Hyannis. The east access point, the location of the new ramp, will be closed during construction, but anglers will be able to use the middle and west access sites.&nbsp;

The 243-acre Frye Lake just north of town will remain accessible while the Avocet boat ramp is being constructed, but parking may be limited. Trucks will be coming in and out as they remove soil from Frye to be used at the Avocet project.

When Avocet is complete, Frye Lake access will be closed to the public until its improvements are finished.

Funding is provided through the Recreational Boating Safety grant program managed by the U.S. Coast Guard, with matching funds from the Game and Parks game cash fund. The total construction cost for both locations is $690,000.

Last year, Game and Parks employees also made improvements at DeFair Wildlife Management Area, the site of the 70-acre lake 2 miles south of Hyannis. They added rock to the boat launch and parking area and constructed two new cattle guards at the fence crossings.

CHADRON, Neb. — The community is invited to celebrate Easter at a Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at Camp Norwesca, located at 79 Camp Norwesca Rd., Chadron, NE.

The Chadron United Methodist Church (UMC) will hold the service beginning at 6:30 a.m., providing an opportunity for reflection and worship as the sun rises.

Following the service, attendees can enjoy a free-will donation breakfast prepared by the Chadron United Methodist Men.

A large Easter egg hunt and opportunities for photos with the Easter Bunny will take place after the service, offering fun for families and children.

CHADRON – Lindsay Cody of Halsey, Nebraska, is Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for March.

Cody is a junior majoring in chemistry and minoring in human biology and business. She said she’s always known she wanted to pursue healthcare and help people.&nbsp;

Assistant Professor of Physics and Chemistry Dr. Clint Evrard said Cody is a joy to have in the department.

“Lindsay is an amazing student and person. Lindsay has a ‘never say die’ attitude about her academics and life in general. When Lindsay finds herself up against a difficult subject, she has this way of just shrugging her shoulders, giving one of her big and joyful smiles, and diving into the work required to succeed. Never once have I heard a word of complaint, or any negativity come from Lindsay. Lindsay’s positive and upbeat personality affects everyone she is around. She has the ability to make everyone’s day better just by being in the same room. Lindsay is joy and dedication bundled into a single person,” Evrard said.

Cody has been a member of Project Strive since she arrived at Chadron State College as a freshman in the Fall of 2022.

Project Strive Director Jen Schaer said Cody has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to both personal and academic growth since joining the program.

“In addition to her commitment to academics and leadership, Lindsay brings a sense of joy and humor to our program. She often brightens our days with funny stories and engaging conversations, making her a delightful presence in our Project Strive offices. We are truly fortunate to have Lindsay as a part of our program, where her positive energy and enthusiasm inspire those around her,” Schaer said.

Cody is an involved member of the college community. She has been recognized with multiple scholarships and has been on the Dean’s List many times. Cody is a part of several clubs and organizations including Project Strive, Health Professions Club, Every Eagles Succeeds, Residence Life Association, Eagle Mentors, and Chemistry Club.

Student Activities Coordinator Elise Oetken said Cody is great at balancing her responsibilities with school, work, and all of her campus involvements.

“Lindsay joined the Eagle Mentor Program this year, and she is a kind and dedicated mentor. She brings fun and energy to her small group, and she has a way of really connecting with new students at CSC. She is always energized and ready to make you laugh. I am glad I have the opportunity to work with her,” Oetken said.

Cody is also a Student Ambassador, and Courtney Bremer, Assistant Director of Admissions, said Cody deserves the recognition of the award.

“Lindsay is without a doubt a hard worker and a very caring individual. She takes challenges head on and is consistent in making sure that every detail is attended to,” Bremer said.

Cody enjoys being an active member on campus and engaging with other students through the Residence Life Association (RLA).

“I like being a part of RLA because it is both a job and a club. I enjoy hosting events and giving the campus fun things to do. I also like spending time with the residents on my floor. I have been able to make some really great connections this year,” Cody said.

Cody also enjoys helping the college community as much as she can.

“Being involved in Every Eagle Succeeds is a very rewarding experience. We are in charge of the Eagle Exchange which gives students the opportunity to get clothes and hygiene products. We want all students to feel like they can get the things they need. I also love the other members of the club. It’s like a little community of super sweet and caring people. Those qualities are important to have&nbsp;<a>in order for</a>&nbsp;the club to function and make sure we are providing care for as many people as we can,” Cody said.

Cody plans to graduate in May 2026 and hopes to get into a pharmacology school. She would like to eventually own or co-own a pharmacy.

“I want to help people and healthcare really interests me. Pharmacy seems like a good fit for me and my desires,” Cody said.

Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO program, located in the lower level of the King Library, is an academic enrichment program committed to helping students succeed. Project Strive also focuses on career exploration, cultural and social enrichment, and self-awareness. It’s that special time of the year again as the Carnegie kicks off its 32 nd Anniversary Show!

Visitors can immerse themselves in the incredible artworks on display from April 1 st to May 17 th . The artist reception will be May 17 th from 5-7 PM and the Carnegie invites the public to stop by and show support for our talented group of artists while enjoying food, drink, and good conversation. This year’s exhibit features 45 artists from Colorado and Nebraska. A record total of 117 pieces were entered and through the jury process, 79 pieces were selected for the final exhibition. This year, the judging will be conducted by Trudy Denham from Chadron State College and awards will be given out the night of the closing reception.

Carnegie Arts Center presents the 32nd Anniversary Show

On 4/3/25 at approximately 7:00 pm, Scottsbluff Police observed Montell Red Bear, 29 of Gering, NE., driving a white 2003 Cadillac in the area of 17th Ave and E 20th ST.  It was confirmed that Montell had a suspended NE driver’s license and a traffic stop was initiated near Broadway and 20th ST.

  The vehicle fled the attempted traffic stop and a pursuit ensued.  A female passenger was observed exiting the vehicle at the intersection of 22nd ST and Ave B.  After the female exited the passenger side of the vehicle the white Cadillac accelerated west bound on 22nd ST.  The pursuit was terminated near the intersection of Ave G and W 20th ST as speeds in excess of 50 mph within residential area were being reached. 

The female was later interviewed and reported that as Montell was fleeing police she made several pleas to be allowed to exit the vehicle, but was not allowed. 

  At approximately 9:17 pm, SPD again observed the white Cadillac as it had failed to yield to approaching traffic as it exited south bound from the alley between Ave B and Ave C in the 2000 block.  Again, a traffic stop was initiated.  The white Cadillac again fled the attempted traffic stop west bound on 20th ST.  The traffic stop was again terminated near the intersection of Ave G and W 19th ST after several observed traffic violations with speeds exceeding 50 mph in residential areas were reached. 

 At approximately 11:08 pm the vehicle was observed on South ST in Terrytown traveling with no lights on.  At this time SPD utilized Stop Sticks to disable the vehicle as it traveled west bound on South ST at a slow speed of approximately 8 mph.  After deployment of Stop Sticks, the white Cadillac again accelerated to evade law enforcement. 

 Assisting units in the area attempted to stop the vehicle, but it proceeded west on Stable Club Road and then north on Ave I at speeds ranging from 10 mph to 45 mph on three flat tires. 

 The vehicle became disabled near 560 W 40th ST at which time Montell was arrested for charges of Flight to Avoid x3, Driving Under Suspension x3, Willfull Wreckless Driving x3, Kidnapping, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.  There were no injuries or outside property damage during the pursuits.  Scottsbluff PD was assisted by Gering PD, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Department, and Nebraska State Patrol.&nbsp;

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen provided the statement below concerning the passing of WWII veteran Harry Lynn. Lynn, of Scottsbluff, was recognized by the Governor on March 10, with a medal representing the end of the war 80 years ago. Gov. Pillen has been actively distributing the specially designed medals in ceremonies across the state, in conjunction with the Nebraska Department of Veteran’s Affairs (NDVA).

&nbsp;Lynn, and his daughter Sherri Lynn, also of Scottsbluff, were killed yesterday in a collision with another vehicle on Highway 26 near Scottsbluff.

&nbsp;“It was my privilege and an honor to have the opportunity to meet Harry and the other members of his family just a few weeks ago. It means a great deal that I was able to deliver that medal to him, and that the community was there to honor him in person. First Lady Suzanne and I extend our condolences and prayers to Harry’s family as they deal with their tremendous loss.”

 Gov. Pillen Shares Condolences on Passing of Scottsbluff WWII Vet 

The Chadron Police Department is urging residents to take precautions following a rise in thefts from vehicles within Chadron. During the night of April 1, 2025 into the early morning hours of April 2, 2025, it has been reported that several motor vehicles were entered into, searched through and had items stolen from inside.

In most cases, thieves have been targeting unlocked vehicles or those with valuables left in plain sight. Commonly stolen items include electronics, purses, wallets, and personal documents. The Chadron Police Department is actively investigating these crimes and is working to identify the individuals responsible. Video surveillance has been obtained from some of the reported incidents.

Here are some Tips for Protecting Your Vehicle and Property:

1. Lock Your Doors: Always lock your vehicle, even if you’re leaving it unattended for a short period.

2. Remove Valuables: Avoid leaving electronics, purses, bags, and other valuable items inside your car, especially in plain view.

3. Park in Well-Lit Areas: Choose well-lit, busy areas when parking to deter criminals.

4. Install Security Features: Consider adding visible deterrents such as steering wheel locks or car alarms.

Chadron police warn of increase in thefts from vehicles

ALLIANCE, Neb. -﻿&nbsp;The Western Nebraska Community College Foundation received a donation from the Shane Aulick family to purchase a Freightliner Bucket Truck for the WNCC Powerline Construction &amp; Maintenance Program in Alliance.

The truck came from Northwest Rural Public Power District. On Friday, WNCC President Greg Dart met with NRPPD, the Aulick family, Powerline Advisory Board members, faculty and students from the program.

"Thank you to the Shane Aulick family for this extremely generous donation," Dart said. "This truck will service the needs of the Powerline program for many years to come."

The Powerline program prepares students to enter the workforce as an apprentice lineman immediately upon graduation. There are three awards available in the program, including a certificate, a diploma, and an associate of applied science in Powerline Construction &amp; Maintenance that can be completed in as little as 15 months.

“Powerline students and staff are extremely grateful for the donation of this bucket truck to add to our existing fleet," instructor Shane Homan said. "The addition of modern well-maintained equipment helps support the learning goals for our students, and it helps the College to control financial costs that come from needing high quality equipment.

"This program continues to be a successful part of WNCC, and much of our success is because of wonderful donors and our Powerline Advisory Board. I personally want to thank all parties that have been involved in this donation and a heartfelt thank you to the Shane Aulick family.”

Our organization stood in opposition to both the original bill which would have allowed feedlots to be exempt from the Livestock Brand Act, and a subsequent amendment adopted by the body which modifies the brand fee structure. While the advancement of the bill to Select File is not what we had hoped for, we remain optimistic that a reasonable solution can be reached to protect the integrity of the state’s cattle industry and the work of the Nebraska Brand Committee.

We thank Senator Tanya Storer for her leadership opposing LB646 and for standing with beef producers who believe in the need for sound Nebraska brand laws. We appreciate Senator Ibach’s recognition that changes need to be made to her proposal before it can come back for debate, and her commitment to work with Senator Storer to find a fair and balanced agreement.

Eagle Radio Spring Auction set for April 10–11 across the Panhandle 

Nebraska fell 11-9 in a midweek matchup at Omaha on Wednesday night at Tal Anderson Field in Omaha.

Nebraska (12-17) scored nine runs on 16 hits and two errors, while Omaha (9-17) scored 11 runs on eight hits.

Case Sanderson led NU at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Max Buettenback had a 3-for-4 night with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored. Cayden Brumbaugh went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and two runs. Dylan Carey tallied two hits, while Cael Frost and Joshua Overbeek recorded one hit each.

Carson Jasa pitched two innings, allowing three runs on one hit and two walks. Gavin Blachowicz and Caleb Clark combined to pitch the third and fourth innings, while Casey Daiss and Aiden White saw an inning of action. J’Shawn Unger fell to 0-1 on the season after allowing two runs on one hit in 0.2 innings, before Blake Encarnacion and Ty Horn tossed the final 1.1 innings.

Omaha took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on just one hit. A hit batter, single and walk loaded the bases with one out for the Mavericks. Back-to-back hit batters with the bases loaded plated the two runs in the opening frame for the Mavericks.

Nebraska responded immediately with three runs on three straight hits to begin the second to take a one-run lead. Singles from Stone and Carey set up Buettenback’s 441- foot three-run homer to right that sailed into the parking lot.

Brumbaugh began the top of the third with a double down the left-field line and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Buettenback to grow the lead to 4-2.

The Mavericks locked the at four in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs on just one hit. A trio of walks loaded the bases with one out, while an RBI single to center trimmed NU’s lead to 4-3. A fourth walk in the inning allowed the Mavericks to tie the game at four.

The NU offense erupted for five runs on six hits to snag a 9-4 lead in the fourth inning. Overbeek’s leadoff single, followed by an RBI double down the left-field line off the bat of Sanderson scored the Big Red’s first run of the inning.

Brumbaugh lined an RBI double down the left-field line to bring home Sanderson and double the lead to 6-4, while a single through the left side by Stone put runners on first and third for the Huskers with one out. An RBI groundout to shortstop from Carey brought home Brumbaugh, while an RBI single by Buettenback and Frost’s RBI double gave the Big Red its five-run advantage.

UNO plated four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to bring the Mavericks within 9-8. Two straight walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs, while a bases-clearing RBI triple down the right-field line made it a two-run game. A sacrifice fly to deep right in foul territory cut the deficit in half and made it a 9-8 game through five innings.

The Mavericks added a run in the sixth to lock the game at nine. Two walks a ground-rule double loaded the bases, while a sacrifice fly to deep center allowed the tying run come home.

Nebraska loaded the bases in the top of the seventh after Brumbaugh drew a two-out walk, but a groundout to second ended the threat and sent a tied game into the bottom of the seventh.

Omaha grabbed an 11-9 lead in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homer to left field after a two-out walk.

The Huskers loaded the bases for the second consecutive inning in the top of the eighth, but couldn’t get the tying run home. Carey began the frame with a single, while Will Jesske and Overbeek drew walks to load the bases, but a strikeout put a halt to NU’s eighth-inning threat.

Nebraska steps back into conference play this weekend, as the Huskers welcome Rutgers to Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State athletics has officially announced its football schedule for the upcoming 2025 season, which features four home games, a Division I opponent and a Week 8 bye.

The Eagles' home dates at Elliott Field at Don Beebe Stadium will be September 13 at (vs. Black Hills State), September 27 (vs. Colorado Mesa), October 11 (vs. New Mexico Highlands) and November 8 (vs. Western Colorado). CSC's home opener against Black Hills State will kick off at 6 p.m., with the other three home games starting at 1 p.m.

For the second consecutive season, Chadron State will begin the season early with a "Week 0" game. This year, the Eagles will open on the road against the University of Northern Colorado, a Division I (FCS) opponent which currently competes in the Big Sky Conference, on Saturday, August 30. 

The following Saturday, September 6, Chadron State will complete its nonconference schedule by traveling to take on in-state rivals Nebraska Kearney. The two schools will compete once again for the "Good Life Trophy," a traveling trophy that was introduced last season for what is scheduled to be a yearly renewed rivalry between the schools.

Chadron State's home opener and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener will be Saturday, September 13 against Black Hills State. The Eagles will play in consecutive weeks for the first eight games of the season prior to having a bye week during the week of Saturday, October 26. 

The September 27 game against Colorado Mesa will serve as both homecoming and the Eagles' Hall of Fame weekend. Senior Day will take place during CSC's home finale against Western Colorado on November 8.

Highlights of the road RMAC games on CSC's schedule include the annual Eagle-Rock Trophy showdown with South Dakota Mines in Rapid City on November 1 and the regular season finale at defending RMAC champions CSU Pueblo on November 15. 

Chadron State is coming off a competitive 3-8 season where the Eagles lost five games by seven points or fewer, including two one-score losses to nationally ranked opponents. 

The Eagles are set to return quarterback DJ Ralph, who battled injuries but was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week after one of the five games he started for CSC last season. Key leaders from a defensive unit that ranked second in the RMAC in total defense and third in scoring defense also return, including All-Region safety Dax Yeradi and linebacker Logan O'Brien. Chadron State also welcomed a class of 38 signees on National Signing Day this February.

All Eagle games, home and away, will be broadcast live with a video feed on the RMAC Network and on the radio on Double Q County 97.5/105.9 FM with Dave Collins. Further information on tickets will be available soon.

Chadron State began spring practice this past Wednesday. The Eagles' intrasquad spring game will take place on Friday, April 25.

Results: Quad of outdoor meets signal start of prep track season

DENVER – Chadron State used the long ball in key spots to earn a doubleheader sweep of the Regis Rangers, earning a 16-3 run-rule victory followed by a 6-2 comeback win on Friday in Denver. 

Playing as the home team in Regis's ballpark after the series was moved from Chadron due to weather, CSC only needed four innings to put up a season-high 16 runs in the first game of the day, then rallied with a five-run sixth inning to stun the Rangers in the nightcap. 

Each time, home runs played a role. Sophia Brennan crushed two home runs in her first two at-bats of the opening game of the series, finishing with seven RBI, to help CSC race out to a 10-0 lead after two innings of play. 

Then, in game two, Brogan Allen and Lauren Zimmerman hit fifth and sixth-inning bombs, respectively, to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead before the Eagles strung hits together to add on. 

Beyond the offensive fireworks, Chadron State's pitching did not allow an earned run through the two games. Tori Haug pitched a five-inning complete game one, scattering six hits with four strikeouts, before Kenzi Garner also threw five innings and gave up two unearned in game two. Belle Akins escaped a sixth-inning jam and ended up with the win in relief after CSC's rally, pitching two one-hit innings. 

With the two victories, Chadron State is now 11-21 and improved to 7-19 in RMAC play. Regis fell to 12-23 overall and 11-15 in conference. The wins snap an eight-game losing streak for CSC and marked just the second RMAC doubleheader sweep of the season for the Eagles. 

Chadron State scored early and often in the first game. After three singles and a wild pitch produced a run, Brennan hit a full-count, two-out, three-run home run to stake CSC to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Eagles catcher, who entered the game with two home runs on the season, fully doubled her total just an inning later.

After Elizabeth Thorngren and Katelynn Czerpak set the table with singles, Aliyah Rothstein drove home a run with a sacrifice fly. Jazlyn Arvizo singled and Lauren Zimmerman walked to load the bases for Ashland Baca, who bounced into an RBI fielder's choice to make it 6-0. 

Brogan Allen singled to load the bases, bringing up Brennan with the bases juiced. This time, Brennan wasted no time, swinging on the first pitch and crushing a grand slam to left field to put the Eagles up 10-0. The blast gave Brennan seven RBI through 1.2 innings, just one off the single-game program record of eight held by current assistant coach Kayla Campuzano. 

Haug cruised, giving up only a three-run home run in the third after a two-out error extended the inning. The senior struck out four and walked just one while improving her record to 5-10. The Eagles completed the rout by scoring one in the third and five in the fourth. 

In game two, Regis scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead before Allen brought the Eagles within one with a solo blast in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the sixth, a leadoff single and double put two runners on with no out, and the Eagles went to freshman Belle Akins out of the bullpen, ending Garner's day after five-plus innings allowing seven hits, no walks, a strikeout and zero earned runs. 

Akins clutched up, coaxing a shallow flyout and a strikeout before fielding a comebacker for the third out of the inning. The Eagles capitalized on the momentum swing immediately with a five-run sixth inning to turn the tide. 

With one out, Jazlyn Arvizo walked to set the stage for Zimmerman, who crushed her team-leading ninth home run to give CSC a 3-2 lead. The Eagles added on key insurance with an RBI double by Brogan Allen and two-out RBI singles by Angelina Quezada and J'lyssa Martinez.

The Supernovas come off one of the most impressive weekends in franchise history, pulling off their second-ever reverse over Indy on March 13 before beating the Orlando Valkyries for the first time in 2025 with a four-set win on March 15. The Supernovas have the biggest home court advantage in pro volleyball, but they've also been mighty on the road. That includes the league's best road record at 8-2. Omaha and Orlando (4-3) are the only teams in the PVF to have a road record at .500 or above. The Supernovas have won six-straight road matches including four straight overall which are both franchise records.&nbsp;

Omaha middle blocker&nbsp;Kaitlyn Hord&nbsp;has been the premier blocker in the PVF so far in the 2025 season. The former Husker and Nittany Lion leads the league in both total blocks (55) and blocks per set with a 0.96 mark. Hord's seven blocks in the five-set win over the Atlanta Vibe on opening night set a Supernovas single-match record. She is also one of five players in the PVF to record seven or more blocks in a match this season.
