CSC fall music performance schedule announced

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Music department has several performances scheduled this semester. All events are free and the public is invited, however attendees are required to wear masks and practice social distancing. The first fall semester events in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Chicoine Atrium will be streamed live on CSC Live. Overflow audience members will be directed to Memorial Hall’s Auditorium. Information about all CSC music events is online.

This Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium, guest artist Dr. Rachel Bergman and CSC Accompanist Bobby Pace will start off the series of fall music events by performing flute favorites from Doppler, Martinu, and Jolivet. Bergman last performed at CSC with Pace in April of 2018 and is the Dean of Fine Arts at Sheridan College in Wyoming.

Dr. Brooks Hafey will perform the inaugural recital in a series featuring the 32 piano sonatas of Beethoven, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium.

A faculty guitar recital by Dr. Mckay Tebbs, assistant professor of music, is scheduled for Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

Another performance of Beethoven’s work by Dr. Angela Miller-Niles, assistant professor at Wayne State College, will be Sept. 20 at 3 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium. She will play several Beethoven sonatas, including the well-known “Tempest.”

The Beethoven series has four performances in October in the Chicoine Atrium, beginning with Hafey’s performance of piano sonatas Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. Other performers in the series include Dr. Jonathan Sokasits, professor of piano at Hastings College, Dr. Nathan Buckner, professor of piano at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, and Pace. Sokasits’ performance is Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. and Buckner’s is Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. Pace will play Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 1 at 3 p.m.

To round out the series, Dr. Alessandra Feris, an assistant professor of piano at the University of South Dakota, will perform three of Beethoven’s final sonatas Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium.

The Wind Symphony and Community Band will perform under the direction of Dr. John Wojcik, associate professor of music, in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.

The Concert Choir will perform under the direction of Dr. Joel Schreuder, professor of music, Nov. 8 at 3 p.m.

As a supplement to the Beethoven sonata series, Hafey will perform sets of Bagatelles by Beethoven, including the famous “Für Elise” in the Chicoine Atrium, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.

CSC’s Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz Ensembles will perform Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Michael Stephens, associate professor of music, and Schreuder, respectively.

On Nov. 19, students of Tebbs, will perform guitar solos at 7 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium.

CSC’s Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Tebbs, will perform in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
