Scottsbluff, Neb. _ The annual AgSplosion Field Day welcomed 190 second graders on Tuesday, October 14, to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at the Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center in Scottsbluff. The 4-H Ag Literacy event rotated the students through eight stations to learn more about agriculture in their surrounding communities.&nbsp;

“We teach second graders about agriculture, specifically within the Panhandle,” said Audra Brown, Nebraska 4-H Extension Assistant. “The students learn about agricultural commodities within the Panhandle, from beans to corn, and beef to dairy cattle. They are exposed to what is being produced in agriculture right here in their backyard.”

The event was held in early October across the Nebraska Panhandle. Elementary schools from Bridgeport, Chadron, Chappell, Hemingford, Mitchell, Minatare, Morrill, and Scottsbluff participated in field days in their areas. A 4-H team was created from extension assistants in the surrounding counties. They created a schedule, contacted schools, and then came together to help staff the stations at each field day to ensure a successful event.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The stations included: beef, dairy, dry beans, potatoes, wheat, and their many products; corn, and the Nebraska Corn Board; and ag technology used by producers. The swine session, which explained commercial swine operations, was led by Brown.&nbsp;

“They really enjoy looking at the model swine barn - the comment I hear the most is ‘wow that's a lot of pigs in there!’ Having a physical model helps them to better understand what a farm looks like,” she said. The students were surprised to learn that pig heart valves can be used to replace damaged or diseased heart valves in humans, which function in much the same way. The students also learned about by-products that come from swine, such as chewing gum, crayons, and drumheads.

Sponsors this year included: Corn Board Grant, Morrill County Farm Bureau, Nebraska Dry Bean &amp; Lentil Commission, Oshkosh Heifer Development (donating dairy station supplies), Scotts Bluff County Farm Bureau, and Walthers Farms (donating the potato chips).

Scottsbluff, Neb. — The annual Water Education for Tomorrow (WET) event welcomed more than 300 fifth-graders Oct. 7-8 to the North Platte Natural Resources District (NPNRD) Campus in Scottsbluff. The two-day event featured nine stations where fifth graders rotated to learn about water and its many aspects through educational talks and hands-on activities. The event is a collaboration between the Educational Service Unit (ESU) 13 and the NPNRD.&nbsp;

“It’s just a chance for area 5th-grade students to come and learn about an important natural resource, ‘water,’ from experts from around the area,” said Dave Griess, ESU 13 professional learning coordinator. The event is a team effort as both the NPNRD and ESU 13 go over evaluations and tweak aspects of the event. They develop nine different stations and get presenters who are very informative and hands-on. “I think the kids love to learn about science, social studies, and natural resources, in different ways than in the classroom.”

Among the returning stations was “Water Safety,” run by the Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department.&nbsp;

“We’re telling them about fire and water safety,” said Carissa Schank-Grubbs, Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department fire chief. “They go to the pool, and go to the lake, and we do have lots of bodies of water around here, and it’s important for kids to know about life jackets and how to use them.” The highlight for the students was at the end of the session, when they would get to spray the fire department's firehose.&nbsp;

Each station had something the students enjoyed and dealt with water. “We have a fantastic campus where we can have nine different stations and 200 kids all spread out. The topic also fits well with our purpose, water resources,” said Kyle Ann Hopkins, NPNRD data management and outreach coordinator.&nbsp;

Many of the children note their favorite part involves the animals the Riverside Discovery Zoo brings out to the event. This year, a short-tailed python visited with the students on Tuesday. The presenter explained to the students how water can make it easier or harder for snakes to burrow in the ground, where they build homes or wait to attack prey.&nbsp;

“It’s a fun field trip. So interactive, hands-on, and an enhancement for science time,” said Rebecca Wenger, fifth-grade teacher at Lincoln Heights. “They like to talk about their favorite station, and later on in the year, they remember the interaction here and how it applies to their textbook learning.”

OGALLALA, Neb. — The Ogallala Livestock Auction shattered records Thursday during its Special Stocker &amp; Feeder Sale, setting 37 new barn records — including two national all-time highs.

The Oct. 9 sale featured standout performances across multiple weight divisions, highlighted by 3-, 4-, 6-, and 7-weight steers reaching unprecedented prices.

In the 4-weight division, 17 head averaging 406 pounds sold for $595 per hundredweight, and 144 head at 430 pounds brought $587. Both sales now rank among the top 10 all-time nationally, while accounting for nine of the 10 highest 4-weight sales in Ogallala barn history.

The market remained strong across middle-weight classes, with new records set for every 5- and 6-weight sale. A new barn record was also established in the 7-weight category, where 60 head averaging 778 pounds sold for $412.50.

The 8-weight division followed suit, as 58 head at 864 pounds brought $382, marking the second-highest price for that class in barn history.

In lighter weights, the barn surpassed the $600 mark for the first time, with 47 head at 368 pounds selling for $615 and 22 head at 397 pounds for $605 — the two highest 3-weight prices ever recorded at Ogallala.

It was a record-setting day from start to finish, reinforcing Ogallala Livestock Auction’s position among the top-performing sale barns in the nation.

National Farm Safety and Health Week is September 21-27

LINCOLN, Neb. – As harvest season approaches, the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Corn Board (NCB) and&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Corn Growers Association (NeCGA) are reminding farmers, rural communities and motorists to prioritize safety during National Farm Safety and Health Week, September 21-27. This year’s theme,&nbsp;“Safety First, Avoid the Worst,”&nbsp;highlights the importance of taking proactive steps to prevent accidents during one of the busiest and most dangerous times of the year in agriculture.

Agriculture remains the backbone of&nbsp;Nebraska’s economy, with one in four jobs tied to the industry. But farming continues to rank among the most hazardous occupations in the United States. Fatigue, stress, heavy equipment and unpredictable conditions all contribute to the risks faced by farmers and rural residents alike.

“Harvest is a season that brings families together across generations, but it also requires us to be more vigilant than ever,” said Brandon Hunnicutt, chairman of NCB. “Taking a few extra moments for safety, whether in the field, on rural roads or around equipment, can save lives and help us avoid the worst.”

Nebraska&nbsp;Corn encourages both farmers and the public to keep these safety reminders top of mind this fall and beyond:

Nebraska&nbsp;Corn also reminds those traveling through rural areas to be patient during harvest traffic and be aware of&nbsp;Nebraska’s updated move-over law. The updated measure requires drivers to slow down and move over for stopped vehicles and vulnerable road users which now includes agricultural vehicles and equipment. Slowing down and staying alert can prevent accidents and help avoid the worst.

The&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Corn Board is funded through a producer checkoff investment of a one-cent-per-bushel on all corn marketed in the state and is managed by nine farmer directors. LINCOLN, Neb. (Aug. 25, 2025) — Gov. Jim Pillen has appointed Lisa Lunz of Wakefield as the new District 4 director of the Nebraska Corn Board, succeeding Debbie Borg, who chose not to seek reappointment after serving since 2013.

Lunz, a fourth-generation farmer, has 37 years of experience raising corn and soybeans with her husband, Jim. She holds a degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and has served as a Dixon County supervisor and on the Nebraska Soybean Board.

“Lisa will be a valuable addition to our organization,” Nebraska Corn Board Chairman Brandon Hunnicutt said in a statement. “With her extensive farming experience and leadership background, we’re looking forward to her insights and contributions as we work together to promote the interests of Nebraska’s corn growers.”

Along with Lunz’s appointment, Pillen reappointed Dan Nerud of Crete and Adam Grabenstein of Farnam as directors for districts 1 and 5.

At its Aug. 19 meeting, the board also elected its 2025–26 officers: Hunnicutt of Giltner as chair, Andy Groskopf of Scottsbluff as vice chair, and Ted Schrock of Elm Creek as secretary/treasurer. Jay Reiners of Juniata will continue to serve as past chairman.

“The leadership elected take on great responsibility, representing all 36,000 corn farmers in the state,” Executive Director Kelly Brunkhorst said. “Their continuity and experience will serve us well as we continue to promote Nebraska’s corn industry and drive initiatives that benefit producers.”

Wakefield farmer appointed to Nebraska Corn Board

BASSETT, Neb. — Two Nebraska sale barns etched their names in the history books Wednesday with record-breaking feeder cattle prices that sent shockwaves through the national livestock market.

At Bassett Livestock Auction, the northern Nebraska barn posted the five highest 10-weight steer prices ever recorded in the United States, highlighted by 159 head at 1,038 pounds selling for $318.25 per hundredweight. The barn also shattered the all-time national record for 9-weight steers, selling 180 head at 936 pounds for $336.75/cwt.

The historic July 23 sale pushed all five top spots for 10-weight steers (1,000–1,099 lbs) onto Bassett’s ledger. Prices for those five lots ranged from $315.75 to $318.25 per hundredweight, a strong signal of continued demand for heavyweight feeder cattle amid tight supplies and elevated corn prices.

Meanwhile, Albion Livestock Market, located in east-central Nebraska, notched major milestones of its own Wednesday. The barn recorded the second- and third-highest 8-weight steer sales in U.S. history. A draft of 65 head at 828 pounds sold for $344.50/cwt, while 43 head at 864 pounds brought $343.50/cwt.

Albion also set its personal best for 7-weights, selling 12 head at 700 pounds for $355.00/cwt—one of the top prices nationally in that weight class so far this year.

Wednesday’s sales come at a time when feeder cattle prices are surging amid lower national herd numbers and strong feedlot interest. Analysts say the records reflect both market volatility and the premium paid for high-quality, reputation cattle.

“These kinds of sales don’t just happen,” said one market observer. “They’re a combination of excellent genetics, precise management, and a red-hot market willing to pay for performance.”

The back-to-back record days at Bassett and Albion are expected to influence pricing dynamics across the Midwest heading into late summer.

Nebraska Sale Barns Set National Records with Sky-High Feeder Cattle Prices

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimated 95.2 million acres of corn planted in the United States for 2025, up 5% from last year, according to the Acreage report released today. Soybean area planted is estimated at 83.4 million acres, down 4% from last year.

Following up on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nass.usda.gov/Newsroom/2025/03-31-2025.php">Prospective Plantings</a>&nbsp;report released in March, NASS surveyed approximately 67,700 farm operators during the first two weeks of June to gather information on what farmers actually planted. Key findings released in the Acreage report include:

NASS also released the quarterly Grain Stocks and Rice Stocks reports to provide estimates of on-farm and off-farm stocks as of June 1. Key findings in those reports include:

 <li>All cotton planted area for 2025 is estimated at 10.1 million acres, 10% below 2024.</li><li>Upland cotton planted is estimated at 9.95 million acres, down 9% from last year.</li><li>American Pima planted area is estimated at 171,000 acres, down 17% from 2024.</li><li>Ninety-seven percent of Upland cotton planted acres are biotech varieties, up 1% from last year.</li>
 </ul>Wheat<ul>
 <li>All wheat planted area for 2025 is estimated at 45.5 million acres, down 1% from last year.</li><li>Winter wheat planted area is estimated at 33.3 million acres, down less than 1% from 2024.</li><li>Other spring wheat planted area is estimated at 10.0 million acres, down 5% from 2024.</li><li>Durum wheat planted area is estimated at 2.11 million acres, up 2% from last year.</li>
 </ul>NASS also released the quarterly Grain Stocks and Rice Stocks reports to provide estimates of on-farm and off-farm stocks as of June 1. Key findings in those reports include:Grain Stocks<ul>
 <li>Corn stocks totaled 4.64 billion bushels, down 7% from the same time last year.</li><li>On-farm corn stocks were down 16% from a year ago, and off-farm stocks were up 6%.</li><li>Soybeans stored totaled 1.01 billion bushels, up 4% from June 1, 2024.</li><li>On-farm soybean stocks were down 12% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks were up 18%.</li><li>All wheat stored totaled 851 million bushels, up 22% from a year ago.</li><li>On-farm all wheat stocks were up 32% from last year, while off-farm stocks were up 20%.</li><li>Durum wheat stored totaled 27.9 million bushels, up 32% from June 1, 2024.</li><li>On-farm stocks of Durum wheat were up 41% from June 1, 2024.</li><li>Off-farm stocks of Durum wheat were up 25% from a year earlier.</li>
 </ul>Grain Stocks<ul>
 <li>Rough rice stocks totaled 69.7 million hundredweight, up 15% from June 1, 2024.</li><li>On-farm rice stocks were up 94% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks were up 7%.</li><li>Long grain rice varieties accounted for 69% of the total rough rice, medium grain accounted for 30%, and short grain varieties accounted for 1%.</li><li>Milled rice stocks totaled 6.09 million hundredweight, up 26% from a year ago.</li><li>Milled rice stocks were comprised of 4.01 million hundredweight of whole kernel rice and 2.08 million hundredweight of second heads, screenings, and brewers rice.</li>

Warnar Schaneman has been selected to serve as the Panhandle representative on the NeCGA state board. In this role, Schaneman will help ensure the voice and interests of Panhandle growers are represented at the state level.

This is the first July cattle survey mailed to producers since the reinstatement of key reports was announced earlier this year.

“This information helps producers make timely, informed business decisions and plan for herd expansion or reduction,” said NASS Livestock Branch Chief Travis Averill. “It also helps packers and government leaders evaluate expected slaughter volume for future months and determine potential supplies for export. Obtaining the current count of cattle will serve as an important decision-making tool for the entire agriculture industry.”

During the first two weeks of July, U.S. cattle producers will have the opportunity to report their beef and dairy cattle inventories, calf crop, death loss and cattle on feed information. To make it as easy as possible for producers to participate in the survey, NASS offers the option of responding via the website&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agcounts.usda.gov/">agcounts.usda.gov</a>, telephone, mail or a personal interview with a local NASS representative.

Data from responses will be used to better understand how crop share leases are structured across the state and inform new publications.Crop share agreements allow landlords and tenants to share both the risks and rewards of crop production. But the terms of these agreements — how costs and returns are divided — can differ widely depending on region, crop type, land productivity, and local traditions.

“Many leases are still based on verbal agreements or old rules of thumb,” said Anastasia Meyer, extension agricultural economist with the Center for Agricultural Profitability. “We know practices vary, but we don’t have consistent statewide data showing how. This survey is an important step toward helping landowners and producers make better-informed decisions.”

The anonymous survey asks participants — whether landlords or tenants — about lease structures, shared expenses, and other common terms. Results will inform the development of educational materials and tools to support fair and effective lease negotiations across Nebraska.

UNL Seeks Input from Nebraska Ag Landowners and Tenants in New Crop Share Survey

LINCOLN, Neb. — Twenty high school seniors from across Nebraska have been selected for a prestigious University of Nebraska–Lincoln program aimed at addressing a critical shortage of food animal veterinarians in the state.

The students were named to the second cohort of the Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program, a competitive initiative launched through a partnership between Gov. Jim Pillen and the university. The program seeks to develop a pipeline of skilled veterinarians committed to serving Nebraska’s livestock producers, particularly in rural communities.

“I’m excited for the futures of these students,” Pillen said in a statement. “They are pursuing a career path that is certainly in high demand. We need skilled veterinarians who can provide advice and services to Nebraska’s livestock producers. Twenty Nebraska Students Selected for Competitive Vet Program to Bolster Rural Workforce

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska’s State FFA Convention brought hundreds of FFA students and their advisors from across the state to Lincoln. Each year the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation selects two recipients for their FFA Advisor of the Year award. This award honors FFA advisors for outstanding work in their local communities.

Emilye Yowell from Meridian Public Schools and Ben Robison from Alma Public Schools were honored at the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;State FFA Convention on Thursday, April 3 in Lincoln. The winning advisors received a plaque and a $1,000 donation to their&nbsp;<a href="https://www.morningagclips.com/tag/ffa/">FFA</a>&nbsp;chapter.

The teachers were nominated by their students and chosen based upon their school and community involvement, leadership development in their classroom, and their ability to keep their students involved in agriculture.

“The&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Farm Bureau Foundation is proud to support these exceptional educators. They go above and beyond for their students and the industry they love, and the future of&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;agriculture is bright thanks to their work,” said Megahn Schafer, executive director of the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Farm Bureau Foundation.

Yowell is the FFA Advisor for the Meridian FFA Chapter. Students in Meridian FFA say Yowell is committed to student success. She equips students to try new things and ask big questions. Yowell has led multiple career development teams to state and helped students see the many opportunities FFA and agriculture have to offer.

“I am extremely thankful to be receiving this award and thankful for my wonderful officer team for nominating me. Advisors often put in a lot of work behind the scenes that does not get recognized, and it is a great feeling to know that this does not go unnoticed by my members,” said Yowell.

Robison is the Advisor for the Alma FFA&nbsp;Chapter. Robison prioritizes creating leadership and learning opportunities for students, encouraging them to grow and maximize their potential. Robison knows that Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs) are incredibly valuable to building well-rounded students. That’s why he has students start their SAE project as freshman. Not only does this provide students with the most amount of time to grow in this project but provides them with an opportunity to apply for awards. Students at Alma are thankful for Robison’s commitment to a strong community and growing strong leaders.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation Announces 2025 FFA Advisors of the Year

LINCOLN, Neb - A measure originally intended to create uniformity in the feedlot industry under Nebraska law was narrowed before being advanced to final reading May 21.

Under current law, feedlots within a brand inspection area in Nebraska can become registered feedlots and be exempt from brand inspections when shipping cattle to slaughter. Sumner Sen. Teresa Ibach, sponsor of LB646, said only the western two-thirds of Nebraska is within the brand inspection area, while the eastern one-third of the state has no branding inspection requirements.

As amended on first-round debate, the measure would require a $1,000 fee to operate a registered feedlot in Nebraska and increase the cap on the physical and electronic inspection fee the Brand Committee may charge to $1.50 per head. The measure also would allow for new inspection exemptions for cattle:

• transferred to the care of another individual without transfer of ownership if proof of temporary possession is established;

• being transferred to or from a qualified dairy;

• transferred to an affiliated grow yard from an inspected RFL under certain conditions; and

• transferred from an affiliated grow yard to an RFL under certain conditions.

North Platte Sen. Mike Jacobson offered an amendment on select file that he said was the result of continued negotiations among various stakeholders.

The amendment, which replaces the previous proposal, would increase the cap on the physical and electronic inspection fee the Brand Committee may charge to $1.50 per head, exempt from inspection cattle shipped to or from a qualified dairy and set the feedlot registration fee at 50 cents multiplied by the feedlot’s maximum livestock capacity.

Jacobson said the amendment would cut the current feedlot registration fee in half. The state’s brand inspection system is important to cow/calf producers, he said, and the compromise amendment would ensure that all factions of the industry are treated fairly.

Calling the amendment “a good first step,” Ibach spoke in favor of it. She said further reforms need to happen, but that the proposal would “move the needle” in the right direction.

“I feel like we’ve made some progress,” she said.

Whitman Sen. Tanya Storer also supported the amendment, although with reservations. A vigorous opponent of the measure on the first round of debate, Storer called the negotiation process “frustrating” and said she had “fought like hell” to make sure the integrity of the state’s brand inspection system was maintained for cattle producers.

“This industry is the core — the foundation — certainly of my district, but I believe of the state of Nebraska,” Storer said.

She offered and later withdrew a floor amendment to the Jacobson amendment to replace a mileage reimbursement system with a flat surcharge fee for travel expenses incurred by brand committee members for inspections.

Ibach said the change was not part of the agreement that was reached during negotiations, but she offered a floor amendment with those same provisions that also included a $20 cap on the surcharge.

She said she was willing to do so in order to not derail the bill and “keep talking” about the change before the final round of debate. The Ibach amendment was adopted 36-0.

Following the 37-0 adoption of the Jacobson amendment, senators advanced LB646 to final reading by voice vote.

Feedlot bill scaled back by Legislature, advanced to final round

WASHINGTON — U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. testified before Congress on Tuesday that a major report due out later this week from his agency will not disparage farmers or a commonly used pesticide.

Kennedy, who has long been critical of certain aspects of modern agriculture and processed food, at a U.S. Senate hearing urged lawmakers to read the widely anticipated “Make America Healthy Again” report once it’s published Thursday, but didn’t go into details about any possible recommendations.

“Everybody will see the report,” Kennedy said. “And there’s nobody that has a greater commitment to the American farmer than we do. The MAHA movement collapses if we can’t partner with the American farmer in producing a safe, robust and abundant food supply.”

His comments followed stern questioning from Mississippi Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who said she had read news reports from “reliable sources” that the MAHA Commission’s initial assessment “may unfairly target American agriculture, modern farming practices and the crop protection tools that roughly 2% of our population relies on to help feed the remaining 98%.”

“If Americans lose confidence in the safety and integrity of our food supply due to the unfounded claims that mislead consumers, public health will be at risk,” Hyde-Smith said. “I’ve said this before, and it’s worth saying again, countries have gone to war over many things — politics, religion, race, trade, natural resources, oil, pride, you name it — but threaten a nation’s food supply and allow people to go hungry. Let’s see what happens then.”

Hyde-Smith, who was her home state’s commissioner of agriculture and commerce from 2012 to 2018, probed Kennedy about his past work in environmental law and whether he might be inserting “confirmation bias” into the forthcoming report.

She asked Kennedy if he would try to change the current approval for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/pesticides/questions-and-answers-glyphosate" target="_blank">glyphosate</a>, a commonly used herbicide, that she referred to as “one of the most thoroughly studied products of its kind.”

“We’re talking about more than 1,500 studies and 50-plus years of review by the EPA and other leading global health authorities that have affirmed its safety when used as directed,” Hyde-Smith said. “Have you been able to review thousands of studies and decades of scientific review in a matter of months?”

Kennedy responded that her “information about the report is just simply wrong.”

“The drafts that I’ve seen, there is not a single word in them that should worry the American farmer,” Kennedy said.

Hyde-Smith continued her questioning and told Kennedy that it would be “a shame if the MAHA commission issues reports suggesting, without substantial facts and evidence, that our government got things terribly wrong when it reviewed a number of crop protection tools and deemed them to be safe.”

Several other Republicans on the Senate Appropriations Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee raised concerns during the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.c-span.org/program/senate-committee/hhs-secretary-kennedy-testifies-on-2026-budget-request/660137" target="_blank">two-hour hearing</a>&nbsp;about how Kennedy has run HHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/rfk-jr-confirmed-nations-health-chief-despite-vaccine-denial-conspiracy-theories" target="_blank">since they confirmed him</a>&nbsp;in February.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins, chairwoman of the full Appropriations Committee, brought up the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, which the Trump administration has called on Congress to eliminate.

“The LIHEAP program, which we’ve talked about, is absolutely vital for thousands of older Mainers and low-income families,” Collins said. “It helps them avoid the constant worry of having to choose between keeping warm, buying essential foods and medications and other basic necessities.”

Kennedy sought to distance himself from the president’s budget request, saying that he understands “the critical, historical importance of this program.”

“President (Donald) Trump’s rationale and (the Office of Management and Budget’s) rationale is that President Trump’s energy policies are going to lower the cost of energy … so that everybody will get lower cost heating oil,” Kennedy said.

Subcommittee Chairwoman Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., brought up several issues with Kennedy, including efforts to change how much the National Institutes of Health provides to medical schools and research universities for Facilities and Administrative fees, often called indirect costs.

NIH sought to set that amount at 15% across the board for any institution that receives a research grant from the agency, a significantly lower amount than many of the organizations had negotiated over the years, bringing about strong objections from institutions of higher education.

That NIH policy has not taken effect as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/trump-administrations-irreparable-cut-nih-research-funds-blocked-judge" target="_blank">several lawsuits work their way through the federal court system.</a>

Kennedy indicated NIH has figured out a way to help medical schools and research universities pay for items like gloves, test tubes and mass spectrometers, particularly at state schools.

“In the public universities, we are very much aware that those universities are using the money well, that it is absolutely necessary for them. And we’re looking at a series of different ways that we can fund those costs through them,” Kennedy said. “But not through the independent, indirect cost structure, which loses all control, which deprives us of all control of how that money is spent.”

Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran, a Republican, brought up the measles outbreak and pressed Kennedy on whether HHS needed additional resources to help his home state and others get the virus under control.

Kennedy testified the “best way to prevent the spread of measles is through vaccination” and that HHS has been urging “people to get their MMR vaccines.”

South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds called on Kennedy to continue fixing issues created earlier this year when HHS fired people working on mine safety issues at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

“My office has learned that staff at NIOSH’s Spokane mining research division have been laid off. This office focuses on the unique challenges of Western mining operations that are often more geologically complex and exposed to harsher conditions,” Rounds said. “This division provides critical technical support for institutions like the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, which recently received a $1.25 million grant to improve underground mining safety. However, the grant has now been canceled due to loss of oversight from the Spokane office.

“This is not just a missed opportunity, it undermines our ability to meet national security goals tied to mineral independence and supply chain resilience.”

Kennedy testified that he’s been able to bring back 238 workers at the agency and said he would work with Rounds to address ongoing issues.

Pledge to fund Head Start, but no dollar amount

Alabama Sen. Katie Britt, a Republican, asked Kennedy about news reports earlier this year that HHS would ask Congress to zero out funding for Head Start, one of numerous programs left out of the administration’s skinny budget request. Head Start provides early learning, health, family and development programs for free for children from low-income families.

Kennedy testified that eliminating Head Start would likely not be in the full budget request, which is set to be released later this year, though the White House budget office has not said when. He said it would ask Congress to fully fund the program, but didn’t share a dollar amount.

“There’s 800,000 of the poorest kids in this country who are served by this program. It not only teaches the kids preschool skills — reading, writing and arithmetic — before they get to prepare them for school. But it also teaches the parents and teaches them how to be good parents.”

Kennedy said there are challenges faced by the Head Start program that he hopes to change during the next four years, including the quality of the food.

“The food they’re serving at Head Start is terrible. You need to change that,” Kennedy said. “We’re poisoning the poorest kids from their youngest years, and we’re going to change that.”

Founded by Jessi Grote, a rural nurse, rancher, and mother, Foster Love with Beef was born out of personal experience and a deep-seated desire to give back. Reflecting on her journey, Jessi shared how the groundwork for the initiative took shape.

“As our long-term foster son transitioned home, there were so many mixed emotions. During this time, my heart was aching for what I knew was going to come.” She and her husband pondered how they could remain involved in the foster care community, but in a different way. “We are ranchers in the Nebraska Panhandle and found the foster kids in our home really enjoyed nights when we cooked with our homegrown beef,” Jessi noted. This realization sparked the idea for Foster Love with Beef—a way for local ranchers to make a meaningful difference in the lives of foster families by providing donated beef.

The beauty of the program lies within its simplicity: when a child is placed into a foster home within the service area, Foster Love with Beef is notified. Jessi then coordinates with local farmers and ranchers who have volunteered to donate beef. Each donation consists of five pounds of hamburger and a roast, offering families the opportunity to share meals together during pivotal moments of transition.

“Our state ranks fifth in the nation for agricultural exports, and we lead the country in beef exports. Yet, the story behind the numbers is about the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;farm families whose livelihoods depend on access to global markets,” said Mark McHargue, president of&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Farm Bureau. “When trade thrives,&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;thrives. The report, released annually since 2017, examines the most recent data provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), sourced from the year 2023 and includes county-level estimates showing the importance of trade at the grassroots level. Cuming and Platte Counties led the state in total agricultural export value, each exceeding $200 million, while Phelps County topped the list for per-farm export value at an estimated $474,832. Counties like Kearney, Fillmore, and Boone also ranked among the highest per-farm export values, a reflection of the size, productivity, and diversity of their farming operations.

“Trade translates directly to income for farm and ranch families,” said Rempe. “Whether it’s corn from Dawson County, soybeans from York County, or beef from the Sandhills, the ability to sell these products overseas can make the difference between a good year and a tough one for many&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;producers.”

According to the report, soybeans, corn, and beef remained solidly entrenched as&nbsp;Nebraska’s top agricultural exports, accounting for nearly two-thirds of total exports.&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;ranked first in the nation for beef exports at $1.59 billion. When a large piece of equipment with tall or large attachments gets too close or touches a power line, electricity can arc from the line to the equipment. This can leave the equipment damaged and result in the operator experiencing serious or even fatal injuries.

“Spring planting season is a busy time for large equipment use, and we continue to emphasize the importance of being aware of power lines when operating ag equipment,” says NPPD Operations Program Manager Trevor Roth. “We also want to remind non-ag workers to look up and look out for power lines. Operators using large excavation equipment or any equipment with tall hoists or booms should ensure they have the proper clearance from power lines.”

If a vehicle or piece of equipment is in contact with a power line, call 911 or your local power provider and remain inside the vehicle until help can arrive and de-energize the line. When a power line touches a vehicle, it can electrify the vehicle and ground in the surrounding area. If a fire forces you to exit the vehicle, jump away, land on two feet, and shuffle as far away from the area as possible.

“In addition to large equipment, we want to encourage drone operators to be attentive to power lines. Drones are being implemented in many different industries, including for spraying crops. If operators aren’t aware of power lines, they could damage both their equipment and the line,” added Roth.
