2022 will bring a significant change to the Chadron Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Ag Appreciation Banquet.&nbsp; 

For the past several years the event, which honors northwest Nebraska’s agriculture producers, has been held at the Assumption arena in mid-January.&nbsp; For 2022, the banquet will be held on May 20 at the Dawes County Fair Grounds.

“Following discussions with local health officials, the planning committee decided to reschedule the event to a date and location that would offer better opportunities to be in a more open area” stated Gabby Michna, Chadron Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.&nbsp; “Along with the current COVID situation, weather has often limited attendance.&nbsp; Several options, dates and locations were considered with May and the fairgrounds being the most popular choice”.&nbsp;

Each year local businesses come together to provide a meal and tokens of appreciation to area farmers and ranchers as a thanks you for supporting businesses in the Chadron area.&nbsp; According to Don Hulls, who started the banquet “Agriculture drives the economy in Chadron and the business owners want to continue to make sure our producers are recognized for their support”.

The scholarships are for the 2021-2022 school year and applications are available at Northwest Rural Public Power District or your local high school guidance counselor’s office.  Scholarship applications will be accepted until February 15th, and scholarship winners will be announced in April.

The Annual Holiday Play is back and takes the stage this Sunday in Hemingford and Tuesday in Alliance. We have had a blast working on this production and are thrilled to share our hard work with you. There are over 60 young people and adults involved in putting on this year's production:&nbsp; "A Christmas Peter Pan"&nbsp; and&nbsp; "The Polar Bear Prince."

In&nbsp; "A Christmas Peter Pan",&nbsp; &nbsp;Tinker Bell summons Wendy to help her save Peter Pan and Santa Claus from terrible Pirates of Captain Hook. A Christmas Peter Pan takes its cue from JM Barrie's beloved classic story "Peter Pan".&nbsp; In&nbsp; "The Polar Bear Prince",&nbsp; &nbsp;things are heating up just south of the North Pole, as a group of revelers spill out of their sleigh bus and into a snow drift.&nbsp; Keeping their spirits high and lower extremities warm, the intrepid partygoers await rescue by acting out a slap-happy, no-holds-barred fractured fairy tale about a beauty who goes to extreme lengths to win her beast, who just happens to be an enchanted prince.

We hope you can join us this Sunday, December 19th in Hemingford at the Multipurpose Hall on the Box Butte County Fair Grounds or Tuesday, December 21st in Alliance at the Performing Arts Center at Alliance High School.&nbsp; The performances begin at 6:30 pm.

Tickets are available at Hemingford Community Federal Credit Union or online at&nbsp; https://otcf.org/&nbsp; &nbsp; $10 Adults &amp; $5 Students/Youth. T ickets will also be available at the door. If you can not afford the ticket price, we do have scholarships available.

The Alliance Commuity Choir will present the Christmas Cantata "Hope Has Hands" Wednesday December 15 at 7pm, at St John's Lutheran Church, 2090 Emerson Ave.-Alliance and again Sunday December 19 at 2 pm, at the United Methodist Church, 704 Box Butte Ave.-Alliance.

The Cantata "Hope Has Hands" is arranged by Russell Mauldin. The Choir is directed by Becky Mitchell and accompanied by Cynthia Horn. Robbie Cerv as Simeon and Anne Henderson-Weare as Anna will be narrators and soloists. Jim Settle will accompany the soloists on guitar. The Community Choir is made up of 30 plus local singers.

The Chadron Public Library Christmas open house and maker space will be holding a grand opening on Dec. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. 

"Santa will be in residence and happy to take photos with everyone," Chadron Public Library Director Rossella Tesch said. "The Maker Space will be open for people to see and try."

There will be cookies, coffee and hot cocoa available.&nbsp;

Chadron library to hold Christmas open house and maker space

Activate Alliance is working to keep all physical activity options accessible for a variety of ages and abilities. The committee is excited to kick off a community bike share program at no charge to users.

Gently used bikes have been tuned-up, painted bright green, and will each have a reflective sticker indicating it’s part of the Alliance Community Bike program. They will be available at the following participating locations around the community:

How it works is simple, users are welcome to use a bright green bike in any of the designated racks and are asked to return it to any bike rack with an Alliance Community Bike rack sign when done. If the bike is placed on the left side, it means it’s in use. If it’s placed on the right side, it’s not in use and free to use.

Alliance Police Department Chief Philip Lukens shared, “I believe the bicycle share program is a significant step for our community members being able to enjoy our safe and wonderful community.”

Committee members have been excited to bring this to fruition, donating countless volunteer hours, and even personally financially donating because they believe in the cause. If you are interested in donating a bike, volunteering to maintain bikes, or being involved in planning, the

Alliance Community Bike subcommittee meetings regularly outside of the monthly Activate Alliance committee that meets virtually on the 3rd Thursday of each month @ 9am.

The committee has been excited to see a number of successes including crosswalk beautification, signage upgrades, walk audits, and various communications. They will be hosting a larger community forum on January 24 @ 5:30pm, more details to come.

Community members are reminded they are riding the bike at their own risk and are encouraged to wear a helmet and abide by all bicycling-specific laws and ordinances. Each bike has a locating device.

Activate Alliance is comprised of school, community residents, hospital, city, law enforcement, public transit, senior services, community center, and public health. Their goal is to make Alliance a safer place to walk, bike, and roll and are funded in part through the Box Butte Health Foundation.
