CHADRON – Lindsay Cody of Halsey, Nebraska, is Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for March.

Cody is a junior majoring in chemistry and minoring in human biology and business. She said she’s always known she wanted to pursue healthcare and help people.&nbsp;

Assistant Professor of Physics and Chemistry Dr. Clint Evrard said Cody is a joy to have in the department.

“Lindsay is an amazing student and person. Lindsay has a ‘never say die’ attitude about her academics and life in general. When Lindsay finds herself up against a difficult subject, she has this way of just shrugging her shoulders, giving one of her big and joyful smiles, and diving into the work required to succeed. Never once have I heard a word of complaint, or any negativity come from Lindsay. Lindsay’s positive and upbeat personality affects everyone she is around. She has the ability to make everyone’s day better just by being in the same room. Lindsay is joy and dedication bundled into a single person,” Evrard said.

Cody has been a member of Project Strive since she arrived at Chadron State College as a freshman in the Fall of 2022.

Project Strive Director Jen Schaer said Cody has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to both personal and academic growth since joining the program.

“In addition to her commitment to academics and leadership, Lindsay brings a sense of joy and humor to our program. She often brightens our days with funny stories and engaging conversations, making her a delightful presence in our Project Strive offices. We are truly fortunate to have Lindsay as a part of our program, where her positive energy and enthusiasm inspire those around her,” Schaer said.

Cody is an involved member of the college community. She has been recognized with multiple scholarships and has been on the Dean’s List many times. Cody is a part of several clubs and organizations including Project Strive, Health Professions Club, Every Eagles Succeeds, Residence Life Association, Eagle Mentors, and Chemistry Club.

Student Activities Coordinator Elise Oetken said Cody is great at balancing her responsibilities with school, work, and all of her campus involvements.

“Lindsay joined the Eagle Mentor Program this year, and she is a kind and dedicated mentor. She brings fun and energy to her small group, and she has a way of really connecting with new students at CSC. She is always energized and ready to make you laugh. I am glad I have the opportunity to work with her,” Oetken said.

Cody is also a Student Ambassador, and Courtney Bremer, Assistant Director of Admissions, said Cody deserves the recognition of the award.

“Lindsay is without a doubt a hard worker and a very caring individual. She takes challenges head on and is consistent in making sure that every detail is attended to,” Bremer said.

Cody enjoys being an active member on campus and engaging with other students through the Residence Life Association (RLA).

“I like being a part of RLA because it is both a job and a club. I enjoy hosting events and giving the campus fun things to do. I also like spending time with the residents on my floor. I have been able to make some really great connections this year,” Cody said.

Cody also enjoys helping the college community as much as she can.

“Being involved in Every Eagle Succeeds is a very rewarding experience. We are in charge of the Eagle Exchange which gives students the opportunity to get clothes and hygiene products. We want all students to feel like they can get the things they need. I also love the other members of the club. It’s like a little community of super sweet and caring people. Those qualities are important to have&nbsp;<a>in order for</a>&nbsp;the club to function and make sure we are providing care for as many people as we can,” Cody said.

Cody plans to graduate in May 2026 and hopes to get into a pharmacology school. She would like to eventually own or co-own a pharmacy.

“I want to help people and healthcare really interests me. Pharmacy seems like a good fit for me and my desires,” Cody said.

Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO program, located in the lower level of the King Library, is an academic enrichment program committed to helping students succeed. Project Strive also focuses on career exploration, cultural and social enrichment, and self-awareness. The Alliance community is invited to an evening of creativity, music, and culinary delights at the upcoming "Lotus &amp; Lanterns: A Serpent’s Glow" Art Gala on March 27, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alliance High School Common's area of the Performing Arts Center.&nbsp;

The event will showcase student artwork alongside live performances by the jazz band and choir, creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere. Guests can also enjoy hors d’oeuvres crafted by the school’s Culinary classes as they explore the artistic talent on display.

4-Day School Week Survey for Box Butte County 

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is planning a 600-acre prescribed burn at Fort Robinson State Park that, if weather conditions permit, could happen as early as Monday, March 3.

The burning will occur west and north of the 22,000-acre park’s water towers. The goal is to remove thatch and improve grazing conditions for the park’s captive bison and longhorns, as well as wildlife species such as pronghorn and mule deer.

Fort Robinson is one of several Game and Parks wildlife management areas, state parks and state recreation areas that have prescribed fires planned.

Historically, wildlife habitats were shaped by wildfires that occurred throughout the year. Prescribed burning is used to increase the diversity of native plants while setting back undesirable species that invade native woodlands and prairies.

The City of Chadron has declared a snow emergency, effective from Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 4:00 A.M. until Tuesday, 10:00 A.M. on February 18, 2025, and will remain in effect until all the snow in the streets has been removed. 

When a snow emergency has been declared all vehicles, trailers, and obstructions must be removed from the designated snow emergency routes. Alliance Public School Foundation Qualifying Income Scholarship One (1) $1,500 scholarship awarded to Alliance High School graduates who plan to enroll full-time at an accredited 2-year or 4-year college, university, vocational school, or community college.&nbsp;

Automotive/Communications Scholarship One (1) $1500 Scholarship awarded to a qualified Alliance High School graduate planning to enroll full-time in an accredited college or vocational school for the achievement of a degree in either an automotive-related field or communications/broadcasting.&nbsp;

Vet Tech Scholarship One (1) $500 Scholarship awarded to a qualified 2nd year student in Veterinary Technician training. Preference is given to high school graduates who have worked in a veterinary clinic, and show an aptitude and desire to continue in this field, as well as preference for sophomore or 2nd year college students.&nbsp;

Class of ’62 Opportunities Grant The Alliance High School class of 1962 is pleased to offer grants up to $5,000 to qualifying seniors or graduates of Alliance High School to help fund expenses for educational enhancement, including but not limited to, experience studying abroad, participation in music or dance classes, art or theater camps, language institutes, science forums, etc.&nbsp;

Class of ’45 Scholarship One (1) $500 Scholarship to a qualifying Alliance High School graduate enrolled full-time in a vocational school, or a two or four-year program at an accredited college or university.&nbsp;

AHS A-Club Scholarship The Alliance High School A-Club awards two (2) $1,000 scholarships to an Alliance High School graduating senior who is planning to enroll full-time at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, vocational school or community college. In addition to meeting the foregoing criteria, eligible applicants must be an active member of the A-Club.&nbsp;

Kaye Hempel Memorial Scholarship One (1) $2,500 Scholarship awarded to a qualified student who has graduated or is graduating from Alliance High School and is pursuing or intending to pursue full-time a degree in elementary education, special education, or speech pathology at an accredited 4-year college. Preference will be given to applications from applicants pursuing or intending to pursue degrees in Special Education or Speech Pathology.&nbsp;

The Frank and JoAnn Tolstedt Scholarship Two (2) $500 scholarships awarded to a high school senior graduating from Alliance High School and planning to enroll full-time in an accredited four-year college or university.

The Andrea Todd Culinary School Scholarship One (1) $1,000 scholarship awarded for anyone seeking to attend higher education at a culinary school, whether for an associates, bachelor or certificate program.&nbsp; In addition to the application please submit an essay on your passion for food and how you feel you can make an impact in the food industry through your education.

Alliance High School Class of 1969 Two (2) $750 scholarships awarded to high school seniors graduating from Alliance High School and planning to enroll full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university or trade school.&nbsp; Preference will be given to applicants who are going into a trade or educational field.

Blythe Boness Memorial Scholarship One (1) $1,000 scholarship award funded through memorials given in memory of Blythe for this scholarship purpose. This scholarship is awarded to one AHS graduate or a graduating high school senior from the Alliance Public School District.

Students who are involved in extracurricular activities may get slightly more consideration but a “gritty” essay and ambitious future goals will be the highest consideration.

Don Brown Memorial Scholarship One (1) $500 scholarship award funded through memorials given in memory of Don for this scholarship purpose. This scholarship is awarded to one AHS graduate or a graduating high school senior from the Alliance Public School District who has attended the Alternative Education Program.

Nic Gasseling Memorial Scholarship Three (3) separate scholarships in the amounts of $1,000, $750, and $500 will be awarded based on the specific criteria attached. The key component of this scholarship is the essay “What Friendship Means to Me”.&nbsp;

Jake Green Young Farmer Memorial Scholarship One (1) $500 scholarship will be awarded based on the specific criteria attached. The student who receives this scholarship must have a strong desire to actively participate in agriculture-related careers, i.e. Ag Business, Chemigation, Veterinary, etc.&nbsp;

Dick Boness Memorial Teacher Scholarship One (1) $1,000 nonrenewable scholarship to financially support students pursuing a postsecondary degree in education during their final two years of college.&nbsp; The scholarship will be awarded to an AHS graduate pursuing a teaching degree.&nbsp; The scholarship is funded through memorials given in memory of Dick Boness, who dedicated over 25 years to Alliance High School as an administrator and coach.

The Liggett Scholarship:&nbsp; Empowering Dreams, Honoring Heritage (1) $2,500 - $5,000 scholarship award.&nbsp; The applicant must be a graduating high school senior for AHS.&nbsp; Also eligible are AHS alumni who have graduated in the last two years.&nbsp; The applicant must reside on a farm or ranch, have direct ties to agriculture, and/or be of Native American descent.&nbsp; The applicant must plan to attend a post-secondary (2-4 year college), a technical school or training program related to their future career.

Hemingford American Legion Post 9 hosts annual Dueling Pianos Event

According to Chadron Police Department, the missing person has been located and he is safe.

During the morning hours of January 16, 2025, the Chadron Police Department took a report that 28-year-old, Blaine Murphy took off walking near the 1200 block of West Highway 20. The report indicated Murphy may be having some mental difficulties. Officers began searching for Murphy, but were not able to locate him in the area or around the Chadron community. Later in the afternoon, Murphy was reported as missing by the reporting party.

As of this time, Murphy has still not been located. Murphy is reported to be 6 foot 4 inches tall, slender build, with blonde hair. He was last seen wearing a Gray Beanie, Gray Jacket and jeans. He may have his dog with him, which is a black and Gray blue healer mix.

We are asking for anyone who may have seen Murphy in the last 24-hours to call the Chadron Police Department and provide details of the sighting. Also, if anyone has any information as to where Murphy may be or where he may be headed to contact the Chadron Police Department at 308-432-0510. It is not known what state of mind Murphy may be in due to the reported mental difficulties, so if he is seen, please contact your local law enforcement agency for assistance.
