Chadron- Chadron Public Library is partnering with the Chadron Arts Center and faculty from Chadron State College and Chadron Public Schools to host a community art show in February, 2023. 

Residents of Chadron and surrounding communities are invited to be creative and make something for the show. All ages and abilities are encouraged to participate. There is no cost to exhibit and the event will be free and open to the public. The goal is to have fun making art, and to bring communities members together.

This year the theme is Rooted in the Earth. Chadron State College Associate Professor Tawny Tibbitts, Susan Rolfsmeier Assistant Director at Chadron Public Library and Whitney Tewahade, Art Instructor at Chadron Public Schools, imagined it would be fun to explore rocks, minerals and all things related to the earth. For example, this could be using minerals in pigments, using natural dyes, clay, rocks, or representing an aspect of the earth as the subject of a drawing, painting, sculpture or textile.

During the month of January, art supplies for adults interesting in making drawings, paintings and mixed media art are available at Chadron Public Library in adult services. A booklist of resources related to art and nature is available at the library front desk and through the library’s online catalog under “Booklists.” The library will offer a program Let’s Make Art Together as part of its annual Winter Reading Program. Join staff member Susan Rolfsmeier, on Saturday, January 28th from 1:30-2:30 pm to relax and have fun being creative.

Registration materials will be available starting Monday, January 9th at Chadron Public Library. Set up for the art show will be Friday, February 17th starting at 5:30 pm. The show will be open to the public February 18th and February 19th at the Chadron Art Center. More details about the event will follow as the date approaches. Wally A. Seiler has announced that the Darold A. Newblom Foundation is now accepting applications for grants and scholarships which will be given by the foundation in May, 2023. Seiler serves as Secretary-Treasurer for the foundation which was established under the terms of the Last Will and Testament of the late Mr. Newblom.

The bulk of the Newblom Estate was given to the foundation to support activities for the moral, mental, intellectual and physical development of young men and women in Box Butte and Dawes Counties, Nebraska; to provide scholarships in assisting students in obtaining an education; and to assist in the founding, equipping and maintaining of associations or institutions engaged in the advancement of learning. This year will be the thirty-third year during which grants and scholarships from this foundation have been given.

Individuals whose educational plans and organizations whose goals coincide with the purposes for which this foundation was established should obtain application forms from Seiler by calling him at (308) 760-4693. Applications for all funds to be awarded this year must be submitted to the foundation’s Board of Directors by March 31, 2023. Any questions concerning the applying for support from this foundation should be directed to Seiler by telephone at the above telephone number or by mail at his home address, 1208 Laramie Avenue, Alliance, Nebraska.

Mr. Newblom, a native of western Nebraska, operated the family’s farm near Hay Springs, Nebraska, until poor health forced him to retire in 1980. Following his retirement, he moved to Alliance where he continued to reside until his death on December 15, 1988.

After three days of snow, blowing snow and blizzard conditions last week,&nbsp; Western Nebraska is now facing bitter cold temperatures heading into the Christmas Holiday.&nbsp; 

The Tuesday morning update calls for a Wind Chill Warning,&nbsp; in effect from Wednesday&nbsp; thru Friday morning.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Extremely dangerous and life threatening wind chills are&nbsp; expected, ranging from&nbsp; 55 to 70 degrees below zero.&nbsp; &nbsp; The Weather Service says....Wind chills of this magnitude can cause frostbite in  less than 5 minutes if precautions are not taken. Hypothermia  and death can also occur due to prolonged exposure to the cold.&nbsp; Livestock and pets will also be severely impacted.&nbsp; Daytime high temperatures will range from 10 to 20 degrees with highs falling to below zero by later in the week.&nbsp; Overnight lows will range around -10 to as cold as -30, with&nbsp; very cold wind chills.

Snow is expected again on Wednesday and we could see some blowing snow from mid-day Wednesday through early Saturday.&nbsp; &nbsp;Temperatures are expected to warm up by Saturday.&nbsp; With highs in the mid 20's on Christmas Eve and near 40 on Christmas Day

This includes most counties in Western Nebraska ...Box Butte, Dawes,&nbsp; Scottsbluff, Banner, Morrill, Sioux, Cheyenne, Kimball and parts of Eastern Wyoming.&nbsp;

All Highways are now open.&nbsp; Some icy conditions remain in spots, so please drive with caution.&nbsp;

Due to the unprecedented winter storm Chadron is experiencing and in the interest of safety for all participants, the 2022 Winter Commencement Ceremony for Graduate and Undergraduate students at Chadron State College is canceled,&nbsp; President Randy Rhine announced early Friday morning. The ceremony was to take place today at 2 p.m. at the Chicoine Center.&nbsp; All students who were graduating today are encouraged to attend the Spring Commencement Ceremony in May.

&nbsp;“I apologize that CSC will be unable to host commencement today, but there’s a limit to what we can do with this type of weather and we’ve reached it,” President Randy Rhine said. “Commencement is truly my favorite day of each semester because I know how much work goes into obtaining a degree. Even though there isn’t a commencement exercise today, all of these graduates and their families and friends should be proud of their achievement.”

Since late Monday evening, Chadron has experienced heavy snowfall and high winds creating large drifts of snow. Beginning Tuesday, crews at the college began to clear the snow around campus, but a ground blizzard that started Thursday and continued into Friday morning created new obstacles that will be unable to be cleared before commencement was to begin.&nbsp; All roads leading into and out of Chadron remain closed as of Friday morning.&nbsp; For up-to-date road information, visit&nbsp;<a href="https://www.511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">https://www.511.nebraska.gov/</a>.

Due to inclement weather, the WESTCO Annual Meeting, originally scheduled for Wednesday, December 14 at the West Side Events Center, has been moved to Monday, December 19, at the West Side Events Center. Lunch will be served at noon with the business meeting to follow.
