NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — A late-stage study of Johnson &amp; Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate has been paused while the company investigates whether a study participant’s “unexplained illness” is related to the shot.

The company said in a statement Monday evening that illnesses, accidents and other so-called adverse events “are an expected part of any clinical study, especially large studies,” but that its physicians and a safety monitoring panel would try to determine what might have caused the illness.

The pause is at least the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-archive-4239b8c69ba4b3703b2ca8c77810bf07">second such hold</a>&nbsp;to occur among several vaccines that have reached large-scale final tests in the U.S.

The company declined to reveal any more details about the illness, citing the participant’s privacy.

Temporary stoppages of large medical studies are relatively common. Few are made public in typical drug trials, but the work to make a coronavirus vaccine has raised the stakes on these kinds of complications.

Companies are required to investigate any serious or unexpected reaction that occurs during drug testing. Given that such tests are done on tens of thousands of people, some medical problems are a coincidence. In fact, one of the first steps the company said it will take is to determine if the person received the vaccine or a placebo.

The halt was first reported by the health news site STAT.

6 Panhandle counties join Box Butte Co. in moving to orange on the virus risk dial

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska health officials say the state kicked off the week by registering nearly 500 new cases of the coronavirus as the state continues to see its number of cases climb. 

The state’s online virus tracking site showed 495 new cases of the virus were confirmed on Sunday in the state, and more than 2,320 cases were confirmed Friday through Sunday. 

That brought the state total to 52,382 confirmed cases and 519 deaths since the pandemic began. 

The site also showed the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 continued to grow.

 On Saturday, a new record of 305 people in Nebraska were hospitalized with the virus, which broke the previous record of 293 on Friday.

UK unveils 3-level lockdown plan; Liverpool at highest risk

CHADRON – Chadron State College President Randy Rhine announced Thursday during a virtual all-campus meeting that the 2020 Winter Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement Ceremonies have been postponed. However, the college does plan to honor its winter graduates during a virtual ceremony.

The winter ceremonies, originally scheduled for Dec. 18, will occur at a future date.

“Postponing the in-person ceremonies for our winter graduates was not an easy decision,” Rhine said. “Commencement is a major milestone for students, as well as our faculty and staff, but the college chose to postpone these events based on feedback received from students as well as the committee that plans and prepares the ceremonies. CSC received an overwhelmingly positive response for its virtual commencement in the spring and we’re excited to honor our winter graduates in that format.”

The college’s fall semester ends Nov. 25. Classes in the December session begin Nov. 30 and conclude Dec. 18.

Rhine said winter graduates will have the opportunity to be recognized during the Spring 2021 commencement ceremonies, if they choose to attend.

The college’s virtual commencement will debut Dec. 18 at 2 p.m.

The update lifted the number of positive tests to 28,564. Of those, 5,865 are considered active cases, an increase of 332 from Saturday’s report. No new deaths were reported Sunday.

 Hospitalizations dropped by one, to 266. COVID-19 patients occupy 11% of the state’s hospital beds, with an overall total availability rate of 42%.

South Dakota sees 38% positivity rate in daily virus tests

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Three more staff members with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services have tested positive for COVID-19, officials said.

Two are employed at the Nebraska State Penitentiary and one is employed at the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center, the agency said in a news release Saturday. People who live and work at those facilities will be notified.

All three staff members are self-isolating at home.

The latest cases bring to 170 the number of correctional department employees who have been diagnosed with COVID-19. The department said 126 of them have recovered.

The new infections reflect a 12.1% positive test rate, up from the average of 10.9% over the last seven days. 

The 14-day trend of positive cases is continuing to rise in the state.

CHADRON – More than 200 people have registered for the&nbsp;<a href="https://bigevent.tamu.edu/conference/" target="_blank">One Big Thanks</a>&nbsp;virtual conference co-hosted by Chadron State College and Texas A&amp;M Oct. 24. CSC students, led by Dr. Shaunda French-Collins, have attended the annual conference in College Station, Texas, since CSC first started hosting The Big Event, an annual day of service, in 2013.

Attendees of the conference hail from approximately 20 institutions such as New Mexico State University, the University of Mississippi, Virginia Tech, and the University of Central Arkansas.

Kaci Waugh of Chadron, graduate assistant for The Big Event at CSC, said weekly meetings with the Texas A&amp;M team to collaborate and plan the event has created lasting partnerships.

“Watching this event come to life and working with The Big Event leaders from schools across the country and seeing their excitement for the first virtual conference has been so rewarding,” Waugh said. “In this strange time, our hope is this conference helps shed light on all of the ways you can still give back during a pandemic. I am extremely happy that CSC’s Big Event staff all have the opportunity to attend the conference, something that never would have been possible without it being virtual.”

Assistant director of The Big Event Emily Hansen of Hemingford, Nebraska, said it has been a pleasure to partner with Texas A&amp;M in planning the virtual conference.

“The process of everything coming together has been remarkable,” Hansen said. “Dr. French-Collins is constantly looking for ways to improve our Big Event through networking. Being able to host the virtual conference was another way to improve.”

Joe Nussbaum, founder of The Big Event, will be the opening speaker. Chris Field, an author and motivational speaker, will close the conference, according to French-Collins.

Presentations will cover the following topics: budgeting, maintaining traditions, leadership, tool distribution, involving internships and classes, sponsorships, marketing, and public relations. Presenters will include students who serve on the executive board of their local The Big Event, student activities staff, and others who work full-time on The Big Event from the University of Central Oklahoma, the University of Wyoming, Quinnipiac University, and the University of Louisiana Lafayette.

The Big Event is a student-led, community service day designed to thank the community of Chadron. Established at Texas A&amp;M University in 1982, The Big Event now occurs at 125 campuses across the nation. The annual tradition attracts hundreds of CSC volunteers who complete an average of 50 jobsites each year.

President Trump tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Box Butte County has experienced our first COVID-related death. Panhandle Public Health has moved Box Butte County to orange on the risk dial, high risk, with positive tests at 22% and more than 50% being community spread, meaning those who test positive do not know who they contracted the disease from. It is time to revisit the discussion about wearing masks.

Last week during the Chamber’s political forum at the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center several questions were submitted regarding the school’s COVID policies, specifically regarding the number of students being quarantined and the Board’s decision to make the wearing of masks optional.

After the forum, I was contacted by Dr. Miranda Curtiss, AHS class of 99. Dr. Curtiss completed medical school and earned a Ph.D. in Immunology at the University of Iowa. She has completed further fellowships in Pulmonary Medicine and Allergy/Clinical Immunology, and is currently a staff physician at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital. She also works in a lab that performs basic research on COVID-19. Dr. Curtiss was especially concerned about the attitude that COVID wasn’t that serious and that we didn’t really need to follow the directed health measures, particularly that so many in Alliance did not see the need to wear masks.&nbsp;

COVID has taken a high toll on the people of Alabama, with 159,169 cases and 2,556 deaths. 12,202 cases have occurred among healthcare workers. Like Nebraska, Alabama has cities and rural areas. Like Nebraska, Alabama has seen some rural areas develop and sustain high COVID-19 infection rates. She urges Nebraskans to look to other states and learn from the lessons and life lost there to avert a similar crisis here. Nebraska is now a red state, which means we have more than 25 new cases per 100,000 people daily.

Even with wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), health care workers are 3.5 times more likely to contract COVID than the general population. Curtiss wanted to stress that school staff are also at an elevated risk. So are first responders (policemen, firemen) and those working in essential jobs, including healthcare, childcare, schools, agriculture, energy, waste, trades, and critical retail (grocery stores, mechanics, hardware stores, etc.). Wearing a mask protects these essential workers so they can continue to do their jobs.

About 40-45% of those infected with COVID-19 are asymptomatic, with an even higher rate for children. However, these asymptomatic infections still spread the disease! An exposed at-risk family member (due to age or medical problems) could easily develop a severe, life-threatening infection.

Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus, and people are contagious before symptoms occur. Major symptoms of COVID-19 are a new loss of taste or smell, new cough, or shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Other symptoms, which are common to several diseases and seasonal allergies include fever or chills, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe symptoms require a visit to the hospital emergency room or a call for an ambulance: trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion, inability to wake or stay awake, bluish lips or face.

Long-term effects of COVID-19 infection have been identified, even in young adults or those with mild or asymptomatic infections. These include chronic cough, fatigue, joint pain, shortness of breath, and headache. It obviously infects the lungs but some individuals will go on to develop lung scarring that requires chronic oxygen therapy. It can affect the heart causing inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or the sac around the heart (pericarditis) which can cause chronic shortness of breath, chest pain and arrhythmias. It can also affect the brain and kidneys, causing strokes, neurologic disease, and may cause kidney disease severe enough to shut down the kidneys and require dialysis. This is not just theoretical; doctors everywhere around the country are seeing this happen in front of them.

About 5% of COVID-19 cases are severe. Risk factors for severe COVID include age over 60, obesity, diabetes, COPD, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and male gender. Even in people with well-controlled diseases. There are an additional 12 medical diseases on the CDC website that might increase risk of severe COVID but have less clear-cut evidence.&nbsp;

The time to act in Box Butte county is today, right now. Test positivity rates in the Panhandle have risen to 15%, the highest to date in the region. COVID-19 is spreading in the community.&nbsp;The Panhandle Public Health COVID-19 dashboard shows that community spread of COVID is higher in Box Butte and Dawes counties than in surrounding counties.&nbsp;For reference, in 2018 Box Butte County had about 2,900 residents estimated to be over 60 years old (20% of the 11,100 residents in the county). In Nebraska the obesity rates are 12-15% of children and teens (27% of the Box Butte County population) and 34% in the general population (predicting about 3100 people in Box Butte county are obese). Diabetes rates in Nebraska are roughly 10% of the population. You can see how quickly this adds up. There are thousands of people in Box Butte County at risk of severe COVID-19 at all ages, but particularly the elderly.

The&nbsp;CDC&nbsp;recommends that you wear a cloth face mask when you're around people who don't live with you and in public settings when social distancing is difficult. In other words, if you are inside a building and someone else is or has been in the same room, you should probably be wearing a mask IN ADDITION to keeping 6 feet away from anyone else.

A cloth mask or disposable paper mask is intended to trap droplets that are released when the wearer talks, coughs or sneezes. Asking everyone to wear cloth masks can help reduce the spread of the virus by people who have&nbsp;COVID-19&nbsp;but don't realize it.

The best protection from the spread of disease is to trap droplets from the person wearing the mask so those droplets don’t infect others. There is also evidence that the use of masks can reduce the number of infectious particles that an exposed individual breathes in; therefore that individual is more likely to have a mild infection rather than a severe infection.

Cloth and paper face coverings are most likely to reduce the spread of the&nbsp;COVID-19&nbsp;virus when they are widely used by people in public settings. Countries and states that required face masks, testing, isolation and social distancing early in the pandemic have successfully slowed the spread of the virus.

While surgical and N95 masks may be in short supply and should be reserved for health care providers, cloth face coverings and masks are easy to find or make, and can be washed and reused. Masks can be made from common materials, such as sheets made of tightly woven cotton. Instructions are easy to find online. The&nbsp;CDC&nbsp;website even includes directions for no-sew masks made from bandannas and T-shirts.

COVID-19 will always be with us. Eventually we will have vaccines. We probably won’t reach a point of having “herd immunity” without vaccines, because to get to that point the loss of life and disruption to our hospital systems and schools is beyond what we can accept as a society. Until then, we should all wear our masks! What can be more patriotic than putting the good of your family, your neighbors, and the country first in the time of crisis?

Doctors urge Nebraskans to take virus precautions seriously

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota health officials reported that the number of hospitalizations increased while active cases statewide have decreased. 

The Department of Health recorded 278 new infections of coronavirus, while 373 people have made full recoveries, meaning that 4,179 people statewide have active infections. 

The state has recorded the nation’s second-highest number of new cases per capita over the last two weeks, according to Johns Hopkins researchers. 

The number of hospitalizations has continued to climb, reaching 250. 

Those COVID-19 patients are occupying 10% of the state’s hospital beds and 20% of Intensive Care Units.

NEW YORK (AP) —The top U.S. public health agency said Monday that the coronavirus can spread more than 6 feet through the air, especially in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces. But agency officials maintained that such spread is uncommon and current social distancing guidelines still make sense.

However, several experts faulted the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance. They said the virus can spread more easily than the CDC seems to be indicating, and suggested that the public should wear masks even in prolonged outdoor gatherings when they are more than 6 feet apart.

The virus “is traveling through the air and there is no bright line. You’re not safe beyond 6 feet. You can’t take your mask off at 6 feet,” said Dr. Donald Milton of the University of Maryland School of Public Health.

For months, the CDC has said that the virus spreads mainly through small airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Most CDC guidance about social distancing is built around that idea, saying that 6 feet is a safe buffer between people who are not wearing masks.

In interviews, CDC officials have also acknowledged growing evidence that the virus can sometimes spread on even smaller particles called aerosols that spread over a wider area.

In the update posted on its website, the agency again acknowledged recent research showing people with COVID-19 infected others who were more than 6 feet away or shortly after an infected person left an area. CDC officials called those ”limited, uncommon circumstances.”

In those cases, spread occurred in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces where people were doing activities that caused heavier breathing, like singing or exercise, CDC officials said.

Health officials urge all Box Butte County residents to monitor for symptoms and get tested if you or anyone in your family begins experiencing symptoms. Please continue all of the important precautions to protect you, your loved ones, and your community from the spread of COVID. Wear a mask when possible, stay at least six feet away from others, monitor for any symptoms, and stay home if you are not feeling well. In the past two weeks, Box Butte County’s overall positivity rate has increased to be 21.8% according to Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services (CMS). Cases have increased weekly over the past three weeks and community spread of the virus remains high at more than 50% of cases. The vast majority of cases within Box Butte County are occurring in Alliance.

Unified Command confirms 51 more cases of COVID in the Panhandle since last reporting on Thursday, October 1. The investigations are underway, all close contacts will be quarantined and actively monitored for symptoms by public health officials.

The state reported four new deaths and 404 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday to give Nebraska 501 deaths and 47,807 cases of the virus since the pandemic began. 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The number of deaths linked to the coronavirus has topped 500 in Nebraska, and more people were hospitalized with the virus over the weekend than ever before. The state reported four new deaths and 404 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday to give Nebraska 501 deaths and 47,807 cases of the virus since the pandemic began. The number of hospitalizations for the virus jumped to 249 on Saturday and remained at that level on Sunday. Previously, the number of people being treated in Nebraska hospitals peaked at 232 on May 27, But Nebraska said 33% of the state’s intensive care beds remained available.
