Here is the latest update on the Post Fire,&nbsp; burning 5 miles southwest of Crawford.&nbsp; &nbsp;As of this morning (Saturday, Sept. 18).... 0% containment, almost 5000 acres burned.&nbsp; Thanks to&nbsp;&nbsp;Erin Considine Wildlife Biologist.&nbsp;&nbsp;Forest Service&nbsp;Pine Ridge Ranger District.&nbsp;Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Control lines established yesterday (Friday)&nbsp; held throughout the night, even with moderate fire activity and winds gusting up to 40 mph.&nbsp; The fire remains south of 4-Mile Road and is not actively encroaching towards the town of Crawford.

Numerous additional resources arrived throughout yesterday evening and this Saturday&nbsp; morning.&nbsp; &nbsp;Fire managers expect an increase in fire activity today with temperatures reaching 93 degrees, low relative humidity, and wind gust up to 30 mph.

Air support remains in the area with 2 single-engine air tankers, 2 heavy type1 helicopters, 2 type-3 helicopters and additional resources are en route.&nbsp; In addition, daily multi-mission aircraft is gathering fire mapping.

Area South of 4-Mile Road (west of Deadman Rd, north of W. Bellmont Rd, and east of Highway 71/2) - strongly recommended to evacuate the area.&nbsp; Area North of 4-Mile Road (south of Paddock Street in Crawford) – are still&nbsp; under a pre-evacuation warning.&nbsp; Residents should monitor local media outlets for information and begin preparations for a possible evacuation. Only law enforcement personnel have the authority to issue an evacuation order.&nbsp; Should an evacuation order be issued, the local siren system will non-stop sound and law enforcement will make contact.

According to Crawford VFD Fire Chief Brian Prosser, “All local Crawford events will continue throughout the weekend.”

The Panhandle Public Health District asks residents to heed important precautions for themselves and their families' health.&nbsp; Air quality information is available at fire.airnow.gov.&nbsp; This will also provide tips for people with asthma, allergies, and any special needs.

Please take extra caution when traveling on Highway 20, between Crawford and Fort Robinson.&nbsp; Limited visibility, as well as increased fire engine traffic should be expected.

Post Fire Update: Saturday Sept. 18 

GERING, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters have been battling two wildfires that broke out miles apart in the Nebraska panhandle. 

Fire officials said Friday the Vista Trend fire south of Gering has burned nearly 6 square miles with zero containment. 

The smaller Post Fire near Crawford has charred almost 2 square miles by late Thursday night. KNEB-FM reports that evacuations have been recommended for both fires.

Officials say no structures have been lost and no injuries have been reported for either fire. 

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency said in an update Friday that 30 structures were evacuated.

That's because Nebraska is one of only two states that divides its Electoral College votes by congressional district.

What can you do at Dobby’s Fall September 18 and 19? There are 27 buildings in the Frontier Town, and several will have people who will share stories or demonstrate skills for you. Throughout the town you will see specialized equipment, like hog oilers or the cistern. Volunteers are around to answer your questions. Dobby’s has several antique wagons, including a stagecoach, Conestoga wagon, water wagon, fuel wagon, and chuckwagon. A few antique cars will be brought in for the Fall Festival.

Stop in the church to sign the guest book. Maybe you’ll hear music or see kids making crafts. There is a church service with Darrel Keith at 10:00 on Sunday morning. View all the creepy equipment in the dentist, doctor, and optometrist office – which is also the local barbershop. Have Steph take your photo at Josiephine’s. Imagine a 5¢ hamburger at Rex’s. Look at the variety of coffins in the funeral parlor.

Along the west side, Justin might demonstrate some leatherworking skills for you. Look at the equipment used to publish Iron Man Magazine. Talk about how different real jail cells were from those in TV westerns. Imagine all the things a town relied on the blacksmith to do for them. Stop and have a sarsaparilla and play a game of cards in the saloon. If you were male with your head taller than the top of the bar, you could have bought liquor, and maybe even visited the brothel upstairs.

Across the square along the boardwalk you can visit the bank. See scales to weigh your gold if you don’t feel comfortable using the paper money banks printed themselves. The shelves on the south wall hold years’ worth of patent books. In the fabric shop Anita can teach you how to sew on a treadle machine. Treat your sweet tooth to some homemade candy in the Kandy Snap.

Head over to the north to pet the ponies in the livery stable. Try your hand at Cowboy Fast Draw – maybe you could have been a gunslinger! The school was used in Box Butte County for many decades. Imagine sitting in the wooden desks, writing on a slate or with a pen you dipped in an inkwell.

When you head to the northeast part of the town, you will pass antique farm equipment and a chuckwagon used on an area ranch. There are two homes back here. Colleen can teach you how to use a spinning wheel at the bale house. Houses like this were built in the Sandhills where there were no trees or sod to cut for building walls. She might tell you the story of Robert Anderson, the man who built the cabin. Born a slave, Anderson was Nebraska’s first black homesteader. Success on a tree claim near Hemingford led to him becoming the largest African-American landowner in the state.

In the area behind the main house you’ll find the buildings that made up Dobby’s original town. The Grand Lake Post Office reminds us that this community used to have a different name before the railroad changed it to Alliance. Visit Dorothy’s Fine Fashions to see what well-dressed ladies might have worn. The still house was actually used by moonshiners during Prohibition, with the cupola on top to watch out for the sheriff. The General Store is modeled after the grocery owned by Dobby’s father in downtown Alliance. The gas station was the first in Chadron, and Bruce can show you how the gravity gas pumps work.

Bruce might even treat you to some ice cream! He has put together a 20-quart ice cream machine powered by a 1937 International LA Engine. The rebuilt unit was at the base of his grandfather’s windmill and used with a pump jack to pump water when there was no wind.

You might have your ice cream put on a dessert from Dutch Oven Jones! The food booth will be selling pulled pork sandwiches, loaded baked potatoes, and loaded hot dogs. Sit and eat at a table in the center, where you can enjoy area musicians performing on the house back deck. Other vendors in this area will be selling baked goods, honey, cotton candy, popcorn, and arts and crafts.

On Saturday be sure to visit with Cody Assmann, creator of Frontierlife.net. Frontier Life is a website dedicated to teaching an accurate history of the American West. Assmann has written and will be selling several books for young readers (probably middle school) about the pre-Civil War West. Each book is written to include questions, activities, primary sources, and video extensions to help readers better understand life on the frontier.

In front of the house Friends of Dobby’s are holding a garage sale, so stop by and see if you can find some treasures. At 2:00 each afternoon War Bonnett Transportation will be giving bike taxi rides.

Dobby Lee wanted to save a vanishing piece of history before it was lost. He and his family saved buildings from a bygone era and built or remodeled others, using methods available 100 years ago. Dobby’s goal was both preservation and education. Remember that Dobby’s is a non-profit with no paid staff. The town relies on volunteers and on donations for maintaining the buildings and paying the utilities, so please be generous when you see donation barrels or cans.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A new watchdog report warns that Nebraska’s prisons face a persistent staffing crisis that has created dangerous conditions, including maximum-security units that are going unstaffed for hours at a time and one incident where a tired employee fell asleep on the job. 

The Inspector General of the Nebraska Correctional System warns in its annual report that the long-standing prison workforce shortage has become a “mass exodus” as burned-out employees leave their jobs. 

The independent watchdog agency was created six years ago and reports problems in the prison system to the Legislature. 

State officials say the state's low unemployment rate is part of the problem, although some lawmakers see higher pay as a solution.

Step back into Box Butte County and Old West History this weekend at Dobby's Frontier Town, for the annual Fall Festival.&nbsp; Activities will run from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, Sept. 18 and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday Sept. 19 at Dobby's Frontier Town, 320 E. 25th St. in Alliance.

USDA announces $77,000 to assist rural and small businesses

&nbsp;Nebraska Panhandle agriculture producers participating in the Conservation Reserve Program may be eligible to earn extra income by helping the region’s pheasant population and other wildlife.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is offering bonus incentives to CRP participants within certain areas of the Panhandle — locations designated as Pheasant Opportunity Areas in the agency’s Berggren Plan to improve hunting opportunities for the popular game bird.

Incentives are available for landowners who are enrolling, re-enrolling or are required to conduct management on their existing CRP lands. The incentives are in addition to the cost-share provided by the USDA’s Farm Service Agency through CRP.

Within the Pheasant Opportunity Areas, landowners have two funding options.

Those who sign a 5-year hunting access agreement through the Open Fields and Waters program are eligible to receive up to $40 per acre. Landowners will receive the habitat incentive plus a payment of up to $10 per acre for the life of the agreement.

Landowners who provide public access are afforded protection from liability through the Nebraska Recreation Liability Act.

The other option, which provides up to $25 per acre, is available to landowners who are not interested in providing hunting access on their lands.

To be eligible for this incentive, the property must be within 1 mile of lands open for hunting. Included are sites enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters program, state wildlife management areas or U.S. Forest Service properties.

With the incentives, landowners receive consultation for a site-specific wildlife habitat plan, said Shelley Steffl, Game and Parks private lands biologist.

“We may ask that you add native grasses and forbs to the property. If you have a stand of cool season grasses, perhaps you add a herbicide treatment to help set back the grasses and allow for better establishment of those plantings,” she said. “In providing these incentives, we hope to help landowners offset the upfront costs necessary to establish or maintain their CRP while helping to provide quality habitat for wildlife.”

Extra incentives available for landowners on CRP

On Sept. 14, 2021, at approximately 5:42 p.m. Hall County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an injury accident on Interstate 80 near mile marker 295 westbound.  

A preliminary investigation indicates a 2018 Ford F-350, driven by&nbsp; Brody Weinmann, 24, of Falls City, Neb., was stopped in the westbound passing lane due to backed up traffic ahead of him. A 2017 Nissan Altima, driven by Carley Johnson, 17, of Doniphan, failed to stop and collided with the rear of Weinmann’s vehicle.  

Johnson, who was the lone occupant of the Nissan, died at the scene. Weinmann and his passenger, 22-year-old Payton Strahm of Sabetha, Kan., were uninjured.

A preliminary investigation indicates traffic was slowed due to a HAZMAT cleanup from an earlier rollover accident, which was off the roadway. This cleanup involved a fuel leak. 

This incident remains under investigation. An accident reconstructionist was called to the scene to assist in the investigation. An autopsy wasn’t requested. Next of kin has been notified.

News Release University of Nebraska Medical Center

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences has awarded the University of Nebraska Medical Center the largest research grant&nbsp;in its history.&nbsp;

The Great Plains Institutional Development Award program for Clinical and Translational Research (IDeA-CTR) this month received a five-year, $20.3 million research grant. The grant is a renewal of a record $20 million National Institutes of Health&nbsp;grant received in 2016.&nbsp;

The grant, led by UNMC, will enhance clinical and translational science and includes regional consortium of partners including University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nebraska at Kearney, Boys Town National Research Hospital, Children’s Hospital &amp; Medical Center, Creighton University, the Omaha VA Medical Center and the Practice Based Research Network, which includes 68 clinical sites across the Great Plains.&nbsp;

Matthew Rizzo, MD, Frances &amp; Edgar Reynolds Chair and professor in the UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences, is leading the group representing the IDeA-CTR awardees.&nbsp;

 </figure>News Release University of Nebraska Medical CenterThe National Institute of General Medical Sciences has awarded the University of Nebraska Medical Center the largest research grant&nbsp;in its history.&nbsp;The Great Plains Institutional Development Award program for Clinical and Translational Research (IDeA-CTR) this month received a five-year, $20.3 million research grant. UNMC receives $20.3 million research grant, largest in its history

One of the many programs offered by Northwest Community Action Partnership (NCAP) is the Weatherization Assistance Program. The Weatherization Program is a free energy efficiency program designed to decrease energy costs for low-income families, especially the elderly, persons with disabilities, and people with small children.

Weatherization measures may be projects on the home’s exterior, like insulation of attics, sidewalls, floors, and the foundation perimeter. They may include sealing heating ducts and weather stripping to reduce the amount of outside air that leaks from the home. Heating systems and water heaters may be repaired or upgraded. The home may be tested for carbon monoxide, detectors may be installed, and other measures may be taken to improve air quality. Homes may even qualify for low-flow shower heads or energy efficient light bulbs.

Weatherization services do NOT include roof repairs, siding, painting, rewiring, or mold mitigation. Furnace repair or replacement is available through a separate program, and you should call NCAP if you need more information about that.

Households must meet income guidelines. Homes may be site built or mobile homes. Renters may receive weatherization services with the property owner’s approval. If a home has been weatherized by NCAP after September, 1994, it is not eligible to be weatherized again.

Low-income families may apply, and priority is given to elderly, disabled, and families with children under age 6. In addition, home occupants must be legal residents of the United States, and they must have an annual gross income that is below 200% of the federal poverty level. Households that receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Aid to Dependent Children (ADC), or Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds may automatically qualify to receive weatherization services.

Be aware that it can take up to a year to have weatherization completed, depending on where a family falls on the priority list. COVID has also created problems with being able to obtain certain construction materials.

Once a home has been accepted into the Weatherization Program, an energy auditor will call to make an appointment for an energy audit. They do a full assessment of the energy efficiency of the home and determine what eligible measures would be appropriate. Fully trained crews will come to the house to make the improvements. Finally, the Quality Control Inspector will return to the home to inspect the work that has been done to ensure it meets standards.

Poverty In Our Area: NCAP Weatherization

Agricultural technology has come a long way since farmers used oxen and horse-drawn plows to break the prairie sod.&nbsp; Huge advancements are being made each year in ag tech, and Nebraska’s companies and universities are leading the way.&nbsp; The technologies they’re developing run the gamut from pioneering livestock management techniques, to innovations in the way crops are grown, to advancements in equipment.

Our growing expertise in agricultural technology brings a number of benefits to our state.&nbsp; It makes Nebraska a very attractive place for agricultural manufacturers to invest, grow, and create jobs.&nbsp; It gives our ag community a competitive advantage in a global economy by making them more productive. &nbsp;And it helps ag producers wisely care for their animals and steward our natural resources. &nbsp;

Nebraska has long been a powerhouse in agricultural machinery production. &nbsp;One significant example of this: Nebraska is home to the vast majority of center pivot manufacturing in the world.&nbsp; From McCook to Hastings to Omaha, companies like Lindsay, Reinke, T&amp;L, and Valmont are at the forefront of innovation, finding new ways to use digital technologies to efficiently apply water to crops.&nbsp; For example, Lindsay’s Smart Pivot gathers data from high-resolution images and sensors to gauge the presence of weeds or pests and to detect nutrient deficiencies.&nbsp; Its FieldNET management platform then analyzes the data to recommend when and where to irrigate or apply pesticide.&nbsp; Additionally, the smart pivot’s machine health capabilities can report low tire pressure or a worn gearbox.&nbsp; Based on this information, growers can schedule repairs with a technician or adjust the timing of irrigation—all from a smartphone.&nbsp;

Technologies like these are one of the reasons Nebraska has been able to manage our water resources well.&nbsp; Nebraska is located atop one of the largest aquifers in the world. &nbsp;Because of this, Nebraska has more groundwater than any other state in the United States.&nbsp; Making use of innovative technologies has helped Nebraska maintain water levels within one foot of 1950s levels, while other states have drastically drawn down their water resources.

In addition to private industry, our state’s research institutions are doing tremendous work in ag tech and related fields.&nbsp; Nebraska ranks #7 nationally in academic bioscience R&amp;D expenditures per capita.&nbsp; In 2020, for the fourth straight year, the University of Nebraska system was among the top 100 academic institutions in the world for earning United States patents.&nbsp; A team of researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL)—made up of animal scientists, computer engineers, and electrical engineers—won an ag tech patent for its video monitoring system that helps pork producers to evaluate the health of individual pigs.&nbsp; The system tracks the animals’ eating, drinking, and mobility habits and reports abnormal behavior that may indicate a health problem. &nbsp;By detecting illness early, the technology allows producers to identify and care for an unhealthy pig even before symptoms of an illness become evident to the naked eye.

Technologies created by University alums are helping farmers to increase productivity and make the most of natural resources.&nbsp; UNL graduate Nick Emanuel founded CropMetrics in North Bend in 2009 with a desire to bring data-driven recommendations to farmers. &nbsp;The company quickly became a pioneer in precision agriculture, helping farmers to irrigate at the ideal time and place by using in-field sensors to collect data and statistical analysis to aid decision-making.&nbsp; This reduces growers’ cost of water and boosts production by optimizing the water intake of crops.&nbsp; CropMetrics now serves over a half-million acres across America.

The University continues to build on its strength in ag tech.&nbsp; In December 2020, the U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded over $11 million in funding for an ag research center at UNL. &nbsp;This summer, Congress approved an additional $20 million for the center.&nbsp;

State agencies are also working to encourage ag tech innovation.&nbsp; The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED), in partnership with Invest Nebraska, launched the Combine incubator at Innovation Campus in October 2019.&nbsp; The Combine supports high-growth entrepreneurs in food and agriculture. &nbsp;The Combine received a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce in September 2020 to help businesses test out and commercialize their ideas.&nbsp; Terrace Ag, the first graduate of the Combine incubator, has created software to help appraisers complete farmland valuations 40% more efficiently.&nbsp; Grain Weevil, another Nebraska ag tech startup, is tackling the problem of grain bin safety.&nbsp; The company is developing an agile robot—resembling a weevil—that can walk across the surface of a grain bin to perform tasks that would otherwise require a farmer to physically crawl inside the bin.&nbsp; This makes grain bin management more efficient and keeps farmers out of harm’s way.

In 2017, I signed the Bioscience Innovation Act into law to incentivize investment by innovative startups here in Nebraska.&nbsp; Administered through DED, the Bioscience Innovation Act provides 1:1 matching grants to early-stage, high-growth biotech companies.&nbsp; This helps to spur innovation in the state’s backbone industry, agriculture. &nbsp;For example, DED awarded a prototyping grant to Grain Weevil to collaborate with a number of small businesses in the state to create a functional robot.

Ricketts: Nebraska's Ag Tech leadership

LINCOLN, Nebraska — Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Director Jim Douglas received on Sept. 13 the National Association of Fish &amp; Wildlife Agencies’ top honor: the Seth Gordon Award.

Since 1970, the award has been given to those who have contributed a lifetime of achievement in conserving North America’s natural resources in the interest of the public trust, as well as contributing to the programs of the association.

“Being recognized by the Association and my colleagues across the country is humbling,” Douglas said. “This is a tremendous honor, and I am grateful for the recognition.”

In order to qualify for the esteemed recognition, one must work in public service; have provided diverse and outstanding service to the association and to conservation for at least 20 years, and have an unusually high record of leadership in natural resource conservation.

Douglas will have served as Game and Parks director for nine years of his 47-year career with the agency when he retires Nov. 1. Prior to that, he served in a variety of leadership roles within Game and Parks, including as district supervisor and chief of the Resources Services Division; chief of the Wildlife Division; and deputy director of Administration.

He has also served on the Federal Aid Joint Task Force, the Monarch Joint Venture Steering Committee and the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative. He chaired AFWA’s Agricultural Conservation Committee and the Wildlife Resource Policy Committee, and has served on the Executive Committee, Bird Conservation Committee and the Fish &amp; Wildlife Health Committee, among others.

“Jim Douglas is the consummate professional and his contributions to the work of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, on national policy, are countless,” said Ron Regan, Executive Director of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. “His years of experience as a leader and his consistent, thoughtful and wise counsel have made him one of our ‘go-to’ directors for managing the complex conservation issues of our day.”

“He brings the same passion to interactions with peers and colleagues, at a personal scale, all across the country.”

For Douglas, it is those peers and colleagues — Nebraskans, landowners, conservationists, and fish and wildlife staff here and across the country — who make the difference.

“I recognize our greatest strengths are not our personal achievements; they are our successful collaborations,” Douglas said. “It takes working together to care for our fish, wildlife, parklands and natural resources, and I know my contributions will be continued and built upon by others who also want to see healthy lands, wildlife, and waters available for generations to come.”

“That, I believe, is the greatest gift we can give to future generations.”

 </figure>LINCOLN, Nebraska — Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Director Jim Douglas received on Sept. 13 the National Association of Fish &amp; Wildlife Agencies’ top honor: the Seth Gordon Award.Since 1970, the award has been given to those who have contributed a lifetime of achievement in conserving North America’s natural resources in the interest of the public trust, as well as contributing to the programs of the association.“Being recognized by the Association and my colleagues across the country is humbling,” Douglas said. “This is a tremendous honor, and I am grateful for the recognition.”In order to qualify for the esteemed recognition, one must work in public service; have provided diverse and outstanding service to the association and to conservation for at least 20 years, and have an unusually high record of leadership in natural resource conservation.Douglas will have served as Game and Parks director for nine years of his 47-year career with the agency when he retires Nov. 1. Prior to that, he served in a variety of leadership roles within Game and Parks, including as district supervisor and chief of the Resources Services Division; chief of the Wildlife Division; and deputy director of Administration.He has also served on the Federal Aid Joint Task Force, the Monarch Joint Venture Steering Committee and the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative. He chaired AFWA’s Agricultural Conservation Committee and the Wildlife Resource Policy Committee, and has served on the Executive Committee, Bird Conservation Committee and the Fish &amp; Wildlife Health Committee, among others.“Jim Douglas is the consummate professional and his contributions to the work of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, on national policy, are countless,” said Ron Regan, Executive Director of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. “His years of experience as a leader and his consistent, thoughtful and wise counsel have made him one of our ‘go-to’ directors for managing the complex conservation issues of our day.” “He brings the same passion to interactions with peers and colleagues, at a personal scale, all across the country.”For Douglas, it is those peers and colleagues — Nebraskans, landowners, conservationists, and fish and wildlife staff here and across the country — who make the difference.“I recognize our greatest strengths are not our personal achievements; they are our successful collaborations,” Douglas said. “It takes working together to care for our fish, wildlife, parklands and natural resources, and I know my contributions will be continued and built upon by others who also want to see healthy lands, wildlife, and waters available for generations to come.”“That, I believe, is the greatest gift we can give to future generations.”Some of Douglas’ contributions to conservation came during his time as director of Game and Parks.  <li>creating a communications division responsible for strategic marketing, public relations and outreach efforts;</li><li>expanding wildlife research for big game, small and upland game and non-game species;</li><li>expanding and creating new partnerships in conservation;</li><li>increasing agency law enforcement to ensure greater protection for the people and resources of the state;</li><li>leading the charge to upgrade fish hatcheries and improve cold water streams;</li><li>enhancing parks across the state for the next generation of park guests, including Nebraska’s Outdoor Venture Parks;</li><li>growing conservation education with the development of the fish and wildlife education division and increasing educational opportunities in parks; and,</li><li>creating a planning and programming division to help best prepare the agency for future success.</li>

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska state senator and former Bellevue City Council member is the first Democrat to announce a bid for governor. 

State Sen. Carol Blood announced her candidacy Monday to replace Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts. He has to leave office because of term limits. 

Blood first won a seat in the officially nonpartisan Nebraska Legislature in 2016 by defeating a Republican incumbent in a politically divided Sarpy County district. 

She won reelection in 2020. But Blood will face a difficult task getting elected in the GOP-dominated state that former President Donald Trump won by 18 percentage points. 

At least four Republican contenders have already joined the race.
