SCOTTSBLUFF&nbsp; —&nbsp;The Nebraska State Patrol family is mourning the sudden loss of Trooper Nicholas Goodwin #73. Trooper Goodwin, 37, passed away today in Scottsbluff. He was a 14-year veteran of the Nebraska State Patrol and served in the Carrier Enforcement Division, stationed in Scottsbluff.

“Our entire Nebraska State Patrol family is grieving today,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Trooper Goodwin was a dedicated public servant and a close friend to many of our teammates. Notably, Nick was a rock for our agency, as well as the family of Trooper Jerry Smith, upon Trooper Smith’s passing in 2019. Nick’s family, as well as Jerry’s family, are in our hearts at this sad time.”

Trooper Goodwin was found early this afternoon inside his patrol vehicle, outside the NSP office in Scottsbluff, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. NSP has requested that the Scottsbluff County Sheriff’s Office conduct an investigation into the incident.

NSP asks for privacy for Trooper Goodwin’s family and for the NSP family as we grieve his loss. Memorial services are pending.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Crowds of bikers are rumbling their way towards western South Dakota, raising fears that COVID-19 infections will be unleashed among the 700,000 people expected to show up at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. 

 It's become a haven for those eager to escape coronavirus precautions.

 Last year, the rally hardly slowed down, with roughly 460,000 people attending. 

Masks were mostly ditched as bikers crowded into bars, tattoo parlors and rock shows, offering a lesson in how massive gatherings could spread waves of the virus across the country. 

This year's rally is expected to be even bigger, despite concerns about the virus’ highly contagious delta variant.

Sturgis bike rally revs back bigger

The Slagle Building in Dobby’s Frontier Town holds the tools of three professions: barber, dentist, and doctor. On the front of the building is an antique barber pole, and when you step inside, you’ll be confused by whether you are looking at the dentist’s office or the barbershop.

Barbers in frontier towns did a lot more than give haircuts! Barbers who immigrated from Europe had been practicing medicine and dentistry, so they brought those skills with them. The barber might have to remove bullets, set broken bones, or pull teeth. As the town grew, people with specialized skills took over the medical and dental tasks.

The barber’s primary function was, of course, making sure their customers got cleaned up. Men received a close shave and a washed and cut head of hair. Many barbers also had tanks or bath houses.

A barber softened a man’s whiskers with a steaming hot towel, then soaped them and used a straight-edge razor for the shave. The razor was expensive and had to be kept sharp using a strop. Men were conscious of the latest styles in facial hair, and they changed often. The barber might be trimming sideburns, goatees, muttonchops, or a variety of mustaches. Men wore their hair short and had frequent haircuts, and the neck had to be shaved as well.

You’ll notice the shaving mugs on the shelves. Men often got infections from their shaves, probably because the razor wasn’t kept clean. But since they didn’t know what caused the rashes or infections, barbers began offering personal shaving mugs for their regular customers.

The barbershop was not only a place to clean up, but men spent hours there catching up on world and area news. Barbers not only had newspapers, they heard all the local gossip. Besides news, men might find out where to buy fresh clothes, get laundry done, eat dinner, or rent a room.

Since dental hygiene wasn’t common, the barber in most towns had to extract rotten teeth as well. Eventually dentists moved into frontier communities to offer their services.

Much of the dental equipment, drills, tooth molds, etc., were purchased by Dobby at an antique auction in Spencer, Nebraska. This includes the foot-powered motor that was used to grind teeth. The tools and teeth in the drawers are from a dentist in Gering. The dental chair belonged to Dr. Slagle, who practiced dentistry and medicine in Alliance in the early part of the twentieth century. A kerosene-heated pressure cooker was used to make dentures.

This room also contains a bandage wrapper. During World War II, the Red Cross held parties to tear sheets into bandages, then wrapped them and sent them to our soldiers.

Dobby’s Frontier Town is located at 320 East 25th Street/ Nance Road, Alliance. The town is open 10:00-6:00 daily for self-guided tours. Donations are appreciated and much needed for repairs after our recent hail and windstorm.

CHADRON — As summer winds down, Chadron State Park and Fort Robinson State Park have adjusted the schedules of many of their services.

Most scheduled activities at the parks are closed after Labor Day, but parks, their offices and their campgrounds are open to vehicles with a Nebraska Park Entry Permit throughout the year.

Following is a list of activities that will alter their hours for the remainder of the season.

Trading Post: Open daily through Aug. 8. Closed Aug. 9-20. Open Aug. 21-22, 28-29 and Sept. 4-6 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed for season Sept. 7.

Swimming Pool: Open through Aug. 15, 1-7 p.m. Closed Aug. 16-27. Open Aug. 28-29 and Sept. 4-6, 1-5 p.m. Closed for season Sept. 7.

Horse rides: Open daily through Aug. 15, then closed weekdays. Open Aug. 21-22, 28-29, Sept. 4-6. Closed for season Sept. 7.
