President of Bulldog Backpack Program set to retire

CHADRON – Chadron State College's Winter Commencement speaker Dec. 13 in the Chicoine Center at 2 p.m. will be Brandon Hall, Principal of Deer Creek Middle School in Jefferson County Public Schools, Colorado. Hall started his journey as an educator in 2002 teaching high school social studies. In 2010, Hall graduated from the University of Colorado Denver with a master’s in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, and a Principal Licensure.

As a school administrator and principal, he has served multiple school communities and learners in all grades K-12 since 2002.

Hall is dedicated to professional development, having completed numerous leadership programs, including the Denver Public Schools Leadership and Crisis Prevention Institute training. Hall said he believes in serving his community through personal accountability, relational trust, and moral purpose.&nbsp;

Jefferson County Public Schools colleagues speak highly of Hall.

Matt Walsh, Principal of Warren Tech, said Hall is a renaissance leader who is interested in learning where he may be lacking.

“He is always reading, listening, seeking out alternative perspectives that challenge his understandings,” Walsh said. "Brandon is one of the most driven learner leaders I’ve ever encountered.”

Wendy Doran, Community Superintendent, said Hall’s dedication is unwavering.

“This consistency in his commitment to the school has been a driving force behind its continuous improvement,” Doran said.

As a Marine, Hall entered Basic Training in 2001. He served in the Marine Corps Reserve as a logistician, civil affairs noncommissioned officer, section chief, civil affairs team chief, First Sergeant, and Sergeant Major. He retired in 2023 after being deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and once in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan.

Hall and his wife, Stephany, have two adult children and a daughter in high school.

For the first time in five years nobody will read this column in The Ledger. Owner Lee Enterprises pulled the plug on Hemingford’s community newspaper as the final issue went out Thursday, December 5, 2024.

Editor Kay Bakkehaug told me about the paper’s demise in a text message last Monday, asking if I wanted to write something to go with other reactions she was gathering or maybe expound on the decline of newspapers in general. Instead of firing off a few sentences before deadline I opted to interview Kay about what The Ledger has meant to the community since its first issue on October 7, 1915, and what the future may hold.

Just as issues of The Ledger have made it to the Keep Alliance Beautiful Recycling Center to become something new, I am optimistic Kay will coordinate an effort to continue telling Hemingford’s story. “I want to come together to have a community-funded and owned paper, maybe just online,” she said.

News of the closing was not a shock given how many newspapers have ceased to exist this generation though it was sad to hear. Kay said she read a statistic that four and a half shut their doors every week in 2023. After hiring Kay at the Times-Herald I was proud of the job she did putting her own stamp on a weekly newspaper for the past six years.

Kay gathered reactions from readers to print saying there “was kind of overall shock and disbelief – how can something that’s been around for 118 years just have been taken away.” She added that people looked forward to “Ledger day”, Thursday, when they’d get the latest edition. The paper started out as the Hemingford Journal in 1907. There was a woman editor in the 1920s, Kay noted. The Kuhn family owned and operated the Ledger for three generations starting in the 1930s until its sale to the Omaha World Herald’s newspaper group in 2007.

Tradition has been a hallmark of the newspaper, such as a Madonna and child photo of a local mom and baby in its 69th year this month. “We’ve always ran the church news and reflected the faith of the community. . . . Keeping those traditions alive has been so important to me,” Kay said. She had a passion for Lifestyles encouraging people to submit weddings, birthdays and other milestones for the page that have increasingly been shared online. “I love that aspect of it, it’s all about community, keeping people informed.”

Kay is an Alliance native and AHS graduate. She and her family have continued to live here while she works in Hemingford. Her readers have been supportive throughout from helping spell local names in photo cutlines initially to taking pictures at sporting events. “I can’t thank the community enough,” Kay lauded.

Children and school activities have been a staple of Ledger coverage. Kay even gifted HHS grads with subscriptions. There was a diverse readership, “all generations like the ledger.”

Past issues will still be available archived at the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center with the past decade online at newspapers.com. The newspaper office is owned by the Kuhn family and had been leased to Lee Enterprises for $1 a year. Some antiques from the Ledger’s history will likely end up on display or in storage.

Upcoming weeks and months will be vital to “recycle” a publication that offered a print edition into a model unique to Hemingford for years to come. Kay has already reached out to

Hemingford Public Schools, which runs a monthly newsletter, and a few community leaders. She is also looking at small towns, such as Crawford, that still have a newspaper for inspiration.

“The heart of a community newspaper is about the feel good stuff,” Kay said. “I got to figure out how to keep it going. . . . Once a town loses its hometown newspaper, it loses part of their identity.”

Nebraska Extension will host Farm and Ranch Transition planning workshops in Oshkosh, and Alliance Nebraska Extension will host Transition Planning workshops for farmers and ranchers in Oshkosh and Alliance.&nbsp;

Nebraska Extension Educator, Jessica Groskopf will offer tools and strategies to plan, start effectively, and complete estate plans, offer background on common mistakes during the process, and highlight essential considerations for creating and carrying out estate and succession plans.

Following Groskopf’s presentation, Bridgeport Attorney, Katie Samples Dean, who focuses on estate and business planning for farmers and ranchers across Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado, will discuss the basics of estate planning in Nebraska, laws and other considerations in the transition; and where to go once you leave this presentation.

“The common mistake is that most know that they need a transition plan to pass their farm or ranch to the next generation, but never get around to putting a plan into a legal document,” Groskopf said. “Over several years, at the end of the workshop, the most common comment is that the participants wished that they had started learning the steps to start and complete a plan sooner.”

Preliminary results from the 2024 Nebraska November firearm deer season show statewide harvest was down 2% from 2023 and down 24% from the 2019-2023 average.

This was more successful than expected for the Nov. 16-24 season as November Firearm permit quotas were reduced 13% from 2023 in response to declining deer populations.

Mule deer buck harvest increased 9% from 2023, while whitetail buck harvest fell 2%. Antlerless mule deer harvest declined 10% from 2023, while antlerless whitetail increased 2%. All harvest levels are down significantly from the five-year average. Total deer harvest for the firearm season has declined each year since 2019.

“Nebraska Game and Parks significantly reduced permit quotas, intending to reduce harvest this year, due to lower numbers of deer,” said Luke Meduna, Game and Parks’ big game program manager. Deer populations in Nebraska have been declining in recent years due to drought conditions, severe winters and increased permit quotas in 2019 and 2020.

“Despite those lower deer populations and permit quotas, many Nebraska hunters found success and created great memories in the field this season,” he said.

Overall, November Firearm permit success was 2% higher at 40% this year, compared to 38% in 2023.

Final harvest results will be available following the close of all deer seasons. Archery season closes Dec. 31, while muzzleloader season is Dec. 1-31. The late antlerless season is Jan. 1-15, while the River Antlerless late season is Jan. 1-15.

Firearm deer harvest down 2% statewide

Denver Air Connection (DAC) announced this month that it is renaming its morning flight from Alliance Municipal Airport to Denver International in honor of local sports figure Jordan Hooper. Beginning November 1st, the 0730 flight is officially KG4235. Alliance Municipal Airport will host a reception for the renaming on Monday, December 9th at 7:30 am. Ms. Hooper is expected to be in attendance to accept a plaque from DAC for the occasion.

Hooper, as a freshman, led Alliance High School to a state title in 2007. She continued her career at the University of Nebraska. As a four-year starter for the Cornhuskers, she led the team to consecutive NCAA Tournaments in each of her last three years.

Jordan was drafted by the WNBAs Tulsa Shock in the 2014 draft. She continued to play for Dallas, Atlanta and Chicago throughout her career in the WNBA.

On January 7th, 2024, the University of Nebraska retired her #35 jersey. “It was incredible. I had no idea it was coming,” Hooper said from her home in Alliance at the time. “I am just so honored and so proud. To be able to have my teammates around me when my banner goes up inside PBA will mean so much to me. What a great day today is, and what a great day that will be. I don’t like to get emotional about many things, but I got emotional when Coach Williams and the players told me. It was overwhelming.”

DAC renaming morning Alliance flight in honor of Hooper

HOT SRINGS, S.D. – Holiday events this year at Wind Cave National Park begin Sunday, December 15, with the park’s annual Christmas Bird Count, followed by a holiday open house on Tuesday, December 17.&nbsp;

The bird count begins at 7:30 a.m. in front of the visitor center. Staff will distribute hiking and driving routes and datasheet packets. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch, warm clothes, and if you have them, binoculars, field guides, and spotting scopes.The count ends at 2:30 p.m., but it is not required to attend the whole day. Smaller hiking and driving units are available.

The count is patterned after the nationwide National Audubon Society effort to document trends in wintering birdlife throughout the United States. Information from the count will be provided to the South Dakota Ornithological Union.

Festivities move inside on Tuesday, December 17, when the park hosts its annual holiday open house. It will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the visitor center. Light refreshments will be served, and students from the Hot Springs’ third grade will present their Christmas program at 1:15 p.m.

During the open house, the public will have the opportunity to view new park exhibits and browse through the park store operated by the Black Hills Parks and Forests Association.The visitor center will close on Christmas and New Year’s Day to allow staff to celebrate the holidays with their families. Throughout the remainder of the winter, the visitor center will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.&nbsp; &nbsp;

On December 3, 2024 at approximately 12:48 PM, the Communications Center received a report of an armed subject inside a room at the Best Western in Chadron. The report indicated the armed subject was threatening self-harm. The Communications Center notified local law enforcement of the report and an immediate response ensued.

Law Enforcement officers from the Chadron Police Department arrived on scene and began evacuation of the Bester Western, set up a perimeter around the area and sent out notifications to the public via Code Red. In addition, a request for additional resources was placed to area law enforcement. Law enforcement from the Nebraska State Patrol, Dawes County Sheriff’s Office, Gordon Police Department, and Sheridan County responded. Specialized trained negotiators from the Nebraska State Patrol were also called in to assist with negotiations if needed.&nbsp; The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department was called and staged in a safe area for a quick and immediate response if needed.

As the situation unfolded, additional information came into the Communications Center providing needed telephone numbers for the reported armed subject, as well as information to where the suspected armed subject may actually be located. Through investigation it was eventually learned the suspected armed subject was actually not in a room at the Best Western at the time, but was actually in another state, contrary to the initial report. Law enforcement in the other state were contacted to ensure the location of the reported armed subject and to also check on the subject’s well-being. As a result, the information was confirmed that the subject was not in Chadron or in Nebraska. The subject was reported to be ok. All law enforcement and additional responding resources were released from the scene without incident.

Barricades are being removed from the streets and normal activities can resume as soon as they are.

There is a situation developing at the Best Western Hotel in Chadron.

 There is an armed suicidal person barricaded in the hotel.&nbsp;

Officers have surrounded the area and there is no danger to the public.

 In order to help safely de-escalate the situation, we ask that people remain out of the area from highway three eighty five east to Maple Street and from a 10th street North to 6th street.&nbsp;
