Last week we attended the ELVIS Rock ’n’ Remember performance at the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center. This was the kick-off of the Alliance Arts Council Season, and what a great show it was! Over 500 people attended. Earl spends the afternoons of these programs working with performers, handling tech and equipment setup. He comes home for a quick supper, and we head back early.

One thing I notice at every performance, and every APS event like concerts and plays, is that the first seats to fill in that theater are the companion seats. If you’ve ever looked around the theater, you have noticed that there is one row of seats on the aisle connecting the entrance hallways, a row that requires no steps. This row has several places where there are no seats, places designed for wheelchairs. The other seats are companion seats, for people attending with the person with mobility issues.

I have not seen people with seeing eye dogs attend events at the Performing Arts Center, but they would also need to use the “special row” to have a space for the dog to sit. It would not make sense to bring a dog to a show like Elvis because of the noise and the lights, but there are plays, workshops, and awards ceremonies where service dogs would certainly be welcome.

Why do people grab the seats in this row first? Easy access and extra space, giving them the ability to get in and out quickly. Why do people with mobility issues need to sit there? As audience members using wheelchairs or walkers arrived, some people did leave seats to accommodate their needs. But I also noticed several other people who were semi-ambulatory struggling to climb up or down steps.

The Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted by Congress in 1990. The ADA is a federal civil rights law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination in many areas of public life.&nbsp;That means that public facilities have to accommodate their needs, with specially designed parking, bathrooms, doors, and, in this case, seating.

The problems faced by people with mobility issues are hardly limited to finding seats in a row designed for them. Sidewalks might not be level, and there may not be cut outs on the curbs to allow a wheelchair or scooter to manage. A handicapped van might have a side lift for a wheelchair that requires that extra-wide parking space with the stripes. Doors might not be wide enough or might be too hard to open. Bathroom stalls might be too narrow for someone in a wheelchair to transfer from.

Do we notice when people park in the handicapped spaces on our streets or store parking lots? Do we look to see whether they have a special license or hang tag? Are they entitled to use the special spaces when the handicapped family member isn’t with them? How about people who leave their vehicles in areas not designated for parking because they are “just running in” for a few things. Their vehicles are in the way and create problems for the rest of us, especially those with mobility issues. And those blue spaces are not really where you are supposed to leave your shopping cart!

I walk a lot, and I know how frustrating it is when a vehicle has parked across the sidewalk. I remember trying to wrangle strollers and wagons around them. Imagine the difficulty for someone with a wheelchair or scooter.

Most of us are fortunate enough that we don’t have to deal with handicaps or mobility issues. (But we are aging….) Let’s respect the needs of those who need accommodations. At the Performing Arts Center, let’s save those seats for the people who need them.

Box Butte County community holiday food baskets

CHADRON – Local high school students, CSC students, faculty, staff, administrators, and regional mental health professionals gathered in the Student Center Ballroom Wednesday for a Social Work conference about mental health with an emphasis on recovery. Seniors Emily Beye of Chadron and Sandra Arlt of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, organized the conference with Assistant Professor Becky Fernau. The annual conference has been hosted at Chadron State College for about two decades.

Ross Szabo, Wellness Director at the Geffen Academy at UCLA, was the keynote speaker. He shared his personal story about mental illness in his family that has been highlighted in his books and TED Talks.

He encouraged the audience to be proactive with mental health just like physical health.

“It is important to know your family history. When you share your story, it encourages others to share their stories. Express your internal life. It takes more strength to do that than keep it covered up,” Szabo said.

He said he hid his feelings and started drinking at age 11 until a suicide attempt in high school. He continued to struggle in college until he received a diagnosis and treatment from a professional.

“I didn’t talk about my feelings. I just made my friends laugh. Coping mechanisms are important. The longer you use a coping mechanism, the harder it gets to change. Young people are having a competition about being stressed out and they are learning it from adults,” Szabo said.

Dr. Tara Wilson, professor of Counselor Education, shared a statistic that indicates one in five rural residents may have a&nbsp;mental illness. She said rural areas also report a higher rate of death by suicide. A shortage of behavioral health professionals compounds these demographics.

Wilson pointed out that the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and peer support groups in schools called Hope Squads are available to help.

Wilson provided inventory worksheets for attendees to complete in eight areas: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, occupational, financial, environmental, and spiritual.

“Give yourself kudos for what you are doing well, then work on those that need improvement,” Wilson said.

A panel discussion featured Joshua Harris, a CSC alum and licensed certified social worker from Rapid City, Chelsea Turner, a licensed student counselor with CSC, and Sonja Dressel, a licensed counselor with Project Strive. The three covered maintaining healthy boundaries, self-care, being aware of cultural differences, and treating all clients with dignity and respect.

Dr. Carrie Howton, director of the Human Services program at Western Nebraska Community College and LaTashia Ramirez of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, gave a team presentation which started with a case study of person in addiction. Audience members were given roles related to the person such as drug court team members and probation officers. Howton asked the attendees for suggested treatment approaches and after the responses Ramirez shared that she was the person described in the case study.

“LaTashia is using her lived experience to help others. Peer support provides someone to walk with the person in their recovery journey and show that recovery is possible,” Howton said. “Peer Support can really help win the battle of recovery.”

Howton said peer support helps connect the person in recovery with resources and other positive outcomes include increased engagement and retention in treatment plus better providing connections to the recovery community.

Applicants who want to become certified Peer Support Specialists must be able to prove that they have two years living in recovery. Supervision and training are also required.

Dr. Sandy Cook-Fong, a faculty member at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, focused her remarks on how to help children from hard places, including trauma from medical treatment as well as emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.

Multiple foster placements, separation from siblings, difficult divorces, disrupted adoptions can all be sources of behavioral and neurological trauma not visible to others.

“Kids from hard places live like they are threatened all the time. How do we disarm that fear? Use trauma-informed practices to create a safe environment. Help the child make connections through teams or church groups. Give the child schedules and routines,” Cook-Fong said.

Cook-Fong also described&nbsp;the 5-4-3-2-1 method to reduce anxiety. The grounding technique involves identifying five things a stressed person can see, four things they can touch, three things they can hear, two things they can smell, and one thing they can taste.

Speech therapist Jenilee Woltman of Hemingford, Nebraska, shared her story of raising twins and gave examples of how&nbsp;communication is linked to behavioral health.

Her young daughter, who has social pragmatic communication disorder and expressive language difficulty, wouldn’t answer a question asking her if she wanted to put her coat on because she got caught up in thinking about where the coat is from, which arm she should put in first, and other questions.

“Adults can help by describing the situation rather than asking a child with this disorder a direct question,” Woltman said.

Social Work conference shares techniques to help with mental health in Chadron

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Department of Economic Development awarded $8.3 million in federal community development block grant funds to 18 communities across the state for downtown revitalization and other improvements.

<a href="https://opportunity.nebraska.gov/programs/community/cdbg/" target="_blank">CDBG&nbsp;</a>funds come from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The state DED administers the program for communities outside Lincoln, Omaha, Bellevue and Grand Island, which are big enough to administer their own CDBG programming.

“For the state to grow, it’s critically important to invest in projects that enhance the attractiveness of our communities,” said K.C. Belitz, DED director. “These initiatives elevate quality of life and strengthen our ability to recruit new residents to Nebraska.”

Belitz said in a media statement that the most recent awardees provided a solid plan for community development that included support from local businesses and residents.

The Alliance Lions Club completed its annual Shopping Spree fundraiser on Saturday morning November 9 at Grocery Kart.&nbsp; Raffle winner Sandi Watkins stuffed $533.48 worth of groceries into four shopping carts in&nbsp;three minutes.

The second-place winner of a $50 gift certificate, Jazmine Burri, and third place winner of a Thanksgiving turkey, Lori Benzel, will be picking up their prizes at a later date.

Lions Club Shopping Spree Winner Fills the Cart With Over $500 In Groceries

ALLIANCE – 11 young ladies from across Nebraska will be competing in the 2025 Miss Alliance Pageant in Alliance on Saturday, November 16TH at 6PM at the Alliance Performing Arts Center in Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp; Titles awarded that evening will include Miss Alliance 2025, Miss Alliance’s Teen 2025, and Miss Panhandle’s Teen 2025.&nbsp; &nbsp;Along with scholarships, crowns and prizes, the winners will compete for the title of Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska’s Teen in North Platte in June, 2025.

The 7 contestants vying for the Teen titles are:&nbsp; Addi Carter, the daughter of Monica Carter of North Platte; Aspen Lavante, the daughter of Kevin and Amy Lavante of North Platte; Allisen Meek, the daughter of Jennifer and Brett Cullan and David Meek of Hemingford; Addison Peck, the daughter of Jeffrey and Bridget Peck of Scottsbluff; Grace Freeseman, the daughter of John and Krystal Freeseman of Gordon; Kenedi Schoeder, the daughter of Brandy Pirnie of North Platte; and Kaitlyn Shannon, the daughter of Stephanie Shannon and Matt Shannon of Alliance.

The audience will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite contestant by voting for the audience choice award!&nbsp; There will also be a silent auction that will take place during the pageant.&nbsp;

Eleven Contestants Competing for Miss and Teen Alliance 2025

Broken Bow, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested an Ohio man and safely rescued an abducted child following a pursuit Saturday.

Saturday afternoon, NSP received information from the Columbus Police Department of Ohio that a suspect of a child abduction may be traveling westbound on I-80 in Nebraska. The child, a three-year-old, was believed to be in the vehicle, which was a GMC Sierra.

Troopers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near mile marker 245, near Overton. The suspect refused to yield and accelerated, passing vehicles on the shoulder. Troopers initiated a pursuit. The suspect reached speeds of approximately 100 MPH and continued passing vehicles on the shoulder. Out of concern for the child and other motorists on the road, troopers discontinued the pursuit and issues alerts to other law enforcement agencies about the situation.

A short time later, Dawson County 911 received a report of the suspect vehicle driving northbound on Cozad Road into Custer County. The vehicle then turned westbound onto Highway 40 near Callaway. Troopers were able to successfully deploy spot sticks, but the driver refused to stop. A trooper reengaged the pursuit.

Additional troopers were located at the intersection of Highway 40 and Highway 47 to attempt another deployment of stop sticks. As the driver reached that location, he drove off the road and at a trooper. The trooper was able to run out of the way to avoid getting struck.

The suspect continued fleeing northbound on Highway 47 and then westbound on Highway 92, where the driver drove off the road, through a fence, and into a field, where the pickup became disabled. Troopers were then able to take the driver into custody without further incident. The child was located safely in the rear seat of the pickup.

The driver, Diego Revilla Gonzalez, 27, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, child abuse (no injury), attempted assault on an officer, and numerous traffic violations. He was lodged in Custer County Jail. The child was medically cleared and placed in protective care pending reunification with her mother.

CHADRON – Taylor Lindstrom of Rapid City, South Dakota, is Chadron State College’s October Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month.

Lindstrom, a former member of the women’s wrestling team, is majoring in criminal justice.

“I have always felt like I wanted to do something with criminal justice because of the public safety aspect. Eventually, I would like to become a firefighter, and having a foot in the door with the public safety aspect will hopefully make it easier for me,” Lindstrom said.

While attending CSC, Lindstrom said she has enjoyed taking Aging and Death (FCS 320) with Dr. Josh Ellis and Criminology (CJ&nbsp; 239) with Dr. Jamie Wada.

Wada, Professor and Justice Studies Department Chair, said he will miss Lindstrom when she graduates.

“Taylor has a friendly and positive attitude. She is also a fantastic person. Taylor has been a delight to have in class,” Wada said.

Assistant Professor in Justice Studies Dr. Adam Hoesing, said Lindstrom has a desire to communicate.

“Taylor is a hard-working, relatable, and enjoyable student. She comes to class prepared with a willingness to learn. That attitude extends beyond the classroom too, as she is not afraid to visit the Justice Studies Department and discuss her career goals or how the course materials apply in a real-world context,” Hoesing said.

When not in class, Lindstrom enjoys spending time with her puppy and riding her&nbsp;<a>dirt</a>&nbsp;bike.

Lindstrom plans to graduate in December and then join the Rockerville Fire Department in Pennington County, South Dakota.

Agate Fossil Beds N.M. offers beaded ornament class

CHADRON – To honor National Native American Heritage Month at Chadron State College, the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center is featuring exhibits of work by Nathan Blindman, a CSC alum, and the late Amos Bad Heart Bull. The exhibit is open until Dec. 13, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., except the week of Thanksgiving, Nov. 25-29.

Blindman is a creative artist from the southwest corner of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He is a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe and is inspired by his family to continue creating art.

“It was through my oldest brother’s encouragement and support from our mother that I embarked on pursuing my higher education in art, 2-D drawing, and painting,” Blindman said.

Blindman graduated from Chadron State College in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in art as a nontraditional student. Before attending CSC, he graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe in 1986 with a Certificate of Fine Arts, specifically two-dimensional.

Blindman has entered multiple art shows at the local level and his art has won placings at the Red Cloud Art Show on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Blindman was hesitant to accept the invitation to share an exhibit at the Mari Sandoz Center.

“At the time I received the invitation to exhibit at the Mari Sandoz Center, I hadn’t put a one-person show together for over 20 years, so it was a challenge. I had to think about it, then decided to accept the offer,” Blindman said.

Blindman plans to bring more pieces to the exhibition as he finishes them.

“This opportunity has inspired me to get back into the art show scene again,” Blindman said.

Bad Heart Bull was born in 1869 and died in 1913. A relative of Crazy Horse, Bad Heart Bull, lived on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and met his wife there. They had one child together, who died during infancy.

Bad Heart Bull enlisted at Fort Robinson as a scout for the U.S. Army in the 1890s.

He produced approximately 415 ledger drawings in a book between 1890 and 1913. The book was passed to his sister, Dolly Pretty Cloud, after his death. The book was buried with Pretty Cloud after she died in 1947.

Helen Blish, an alum of the University of Nebraska, learned about Bad Heart Bull’s book in 1927. Blish received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska in 1922. She returned to the university for her master’s degree in 1928 and completed her thesis on Bad Heart Bull’s drawings.

Blish lived on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for about four years and learned about Native American culture. She arranged to borrow the book from Pretty Cloud to further investigate Bad Heart Bull’s work. Working from prints, Blish produced a manuscript with interpretations of each drawing based on interviews conducted at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Before returning the book, Blish had the drawings photographed in black and white to accompany her findings and interpretations.

In 1967, the University of Nebraska Press published A Pictographic History of the Oglala Sioux, a fully illustrated manuscript of Bad Heart Bull’s drawings and Blish’s findings.

The work of Bad Heart Bull inspired the art in the East Chamber of Nebraska's Capitol, where one of Blish’s mentors was in charge of thematic design.

Eighteen of Bad Heart Bull’s prints are on display at CSC. They were photographed from Sioux Indian Painting Part I and Part II, two large-format books printed in 1938 in France. One book is numbered 146/400, and the other is 255/400. Both are signed and in the Sandoz Center's archives. One of the books includes an undated, typed document signed by Mari Sandoz.

Bad Heart Bull’s drawings provide overviews of Lakota life. The drawings represent warfare, religion, domestic and social life, hunting, ranching, and other events that have either been experienced or passed on through storytelling. Some drawings have inscriptions in Lakota depicting the people involved or the event that is taking place.

She arranged to borrow the book from Pretty Cloud to further investigate Bad Heart Bull’s work. Working from prints, Blish produced a manuscript with interpretations of each drawing based on interviews conducted at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Before returning the book, Blish had the drawings photographed in black and white to accompany her findings and interpretations.In 1967, the University of Nebraska Press published A Pictographic History of the Oglala Sioux, a fully illustrated manuscript of Bad Heart Bull’s drawings and Blish’s findings.The work of Bad Heart Bull inspired the art in the East Chamber of Nebraska's Capitol, where one of Blish’s mentors was in charge of thematic design.Eighteen of Bad Heart Bull’s prints are on display at CSC. They were photographed from Sioux Indian Painting Part I and Part II, two large-format books printed in 1938 in France. One book is numbered 146/400, and the other is 255/400. Both are signed and in the Sandoz Center's archives. One of the books includes an undated, typed document signed by Mari Sandoz.Bad Heart Bull’s drawings provide overviews of Lakota life. The drawings represent warfare, religion, domestic and social life, hunting, ranching, and other events that have either been experienced or passed on through storytelling. Some drawings have inscriptions in Lakota depicting the people involved or the event that is taking place.

Knight Museum & Sandhills Center 28th Annual Christmas Festival

CHADRON – The Family Tree Award is presented annually to families with a tradition of attending Chadron State College. The 2024 recipient of the Family Tree Award is the Studnicka family.

Ella Schlaman Studnicka, matriarch of the family, was born in 1916 in Lodgepole, Nebraska. Her parents were Dick and Doretta Schlaman. She graduated from Lodgepole High School and enrolled at CSC in 1933. She earned a two-year teaching certificate by the summer of 1934. From 1934 to 1944, Ella taught in the Sunol and Chappell Public Schools. In 1962, she returned to CSC and completed a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught in the Sidney Public Schools from 1962 to when she retired in 1978.

Ella and her husband, Lumir, had nine children: LaNita, Cheryl (deceased), Louella, Robert, Janet (deceased), Cynthia, Steve (deceased), Lila, and Ronald. Ella died in 2000.

LaNita, who was born in Champaign, Illinois, graduated from Sidney High School in 1963. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from CSC in 1966. She was the president of the Lutheran Student Association, treasurer of the Campus Center Board, secretary of Cardinal Key, a member of Sigma Delta Nu, and Alpha Phi Sigma.

She and her husband, Herbert (deceased) Roeser, had four children:&nbsp; Gretchen Twohig, Sara English, Richard Roeser, and Adam Roeser.

Now retired, she taught English at Scottsbluff Senior High from 1966 to 1971 and at Aurora High School from 1971 to 1972.&nbsp; Roeser continued teaching English at Grand Island High School 1972 to1975 and 1982 to 2007. She earned a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1991. She also taught at Central Community College from 2008-15.

Cynthia was born in Sidney and married Steve Yantzi, also a CSC graduate. They live in Kemmerer, Wyoming, and have three children: Lindsay Henning, Phillip Yantzi, and Julie Willman.

Yantzi graduated from Sidney High School in 1972 and attended CSC, graduating in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. She earned a teaching endorsement in 1980.&nbsp; At CSC, she was a tutor, a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, and a member of Daughters of the Crossed Sword.

She continued her education at Creighton University, where she earned a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1988. At Creighton, she was a member of Sigma Theta Tau international nursing honor society and was named the Nursing Student of the Year.

She was also a science educator in Chadron, Kemmerer, and at Western Wyoming Community College. Other positions included administrative assistant at the Pine Ridge Job Corps and church organist. Cynthia worked as a Registered Nurse and certified nursing assistant in Chadron, Sidney, and Kemmerer and is now retired.

Steve was born in Chadron and graduated from Chadron High School in 1971. In 1977, he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. He also earned a degree in medical technology in 1984. He was employed by the U.S. Forest Service, South Lincoln Medical Center, P&amp;M Coal, and Chevron Mining. He retired as a Coal Quality Supervisor in 2017.

Studnicka was born in Sidney and graduated from Sidney High School in 1979.&nbsp; He earned two bachelor’s degrees from CSC in 1985, one in agri-business and the other in industrial technology. He was the vice president of his senior class club and a member of the Industrial Arts Guild.

In 1982, he graduated from Western Nebraska Technical College with an associate’s degree in aviation maintenance technology. He also earned an airframe and powerplant license.

He and his wife, Michelle, have one son, Seth.

From 1986 to 1994, Ron worked as an assistant county supervisor and county supervisor for Farmers Home Administration, United States Department of Agriculture in Chadron, Wray, Colorado, and Sidney, Nebraska, earning the Nebraska County Supervisor of the Year in 1991. From 1994 to 1998, he was a loan production officer for Nebraska State Bank. He worked as an independent mortgage loan broker from 1998 to 2001. In 2005, he was the credit manager for the FEC AG cooperative. From 2007 to 2011, he was a financial analyst for Cabela’s; from 2011 to 201, he was the payroll manager and worked for Adams Industries as controller. Ron worked on the family farm with his father from 1973 until Lumir died in 1990. Ron, Michelle, and Seth now work the farm, making Seth the fourth generation to do so.

Seth&nbsp;was born in Scottsbluff and&nbsp;graduated from Sidney High School in 2019. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in education with a 6-12 grade mathematics endorsement in May 2024. He was an Eagle Leader, a member of the Blue Key Honor Society, and a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon. He teaches geometry and algebra II at Sidney High School and is an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Sidney Middle School.

Each recipient family of the Family Tree Award must include a minimum of three generations of graduates. At least two of the family members must have a record of outstanding service to the college, the alumni association, their community, or their profession.
