WASHINGTON&nbsp;–&nbsp;U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) introduced a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-joint-resolution/46?s=1&amp;r=1">resolution of disapproval</a>&nbsp;under the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to repeal California’s Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) regulation which imposed unrealistic and stringent emissions requirements for heavy-duty trucks and heavy-duty diesel engines.

“As we saw under the Biden administration, what happens in California doesn’t stay in California. Their emissions regulation will cripple the truck manufacturing industry nationwide, overloading companies and truckers with expensive, heavy-handed requirements. This inevitably leads to increased prices for families across the nation. My resolution will overturn the Biden administration’s waiver allowing the ACT regulation to take effect without congressional review,”&nbsp;&nbsp;Fischer said.&nbsp;

The ACT requires manufacturers of trucks, from class 2b to class 8, to meet unrealistic zero-emission regulations by 2025. Under the regulation, manufacturers would have to sell an increasingly larger percentage of zero-emission vehicles between 2024 to 2035. Additionally, the ACT requires fleet owners with more than 50 vehicles to submit a one-time report on their existing operations.

WASHINGTON — The IRS and Department of Homeland Security reached an agreement Monday to share tax information of immigrants who have final orders of removal to help immigration agents find and deport the immigrants, according to documents filed in court.

No information between the two agencies has been shared yet, according&nbsp;<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.dcd.278147/gov.uscourts.dcd.278147.30.1_1.pdf" target="_blank">to the filings</a>&nbsp;in federal court in the District of Columbia, but the partnership would impact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/removal-system-united-states-overview" target="_blank">more than 1 million immigrants</a>&nbsp;with final removal orders, as the Trump administration carries out mass deportations of immigrants without permanent legal status.

According to a memorandum of understanding signed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and submitted to the court, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials can ask the IRS to provide information about immigrants with orders of removal or immigrants involved in criminal investigations.

Some of that tax information includes sensitive details such as current addresses and information about child tax dependents.

It would be the first time the IRS shared sensitive tax information to carry out immigration enforcement.

In 2023, immigrants in the country without legal authority paid more than $89 billion in taxes,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/topics/tax-contributions" target="_blank">according to the left-leaning think tank the American Immigration Council.</a>

In order to file taxes without a social security number, someone who is not a U.S. citizen would use an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or an&nbsp;ITIN. As of 2022, there were more than 5.8 million active&nbsp;ITINs,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tigta.gov/sites/default/files/reports/2024-11/2024400012fr.pdf" target="_blank">according to a report by the Treasury Department Inspect General</a>.

The government filed the document in a case brought by immigration rights groups the Centro de Trabajadores Unidos and Immigrant Solidarity DuPage. The groups are trying to block the IRS from sharing tax records with DHS for immigration enforcement, arguing that such sharing violates IRS disclosure laws.

The Trump administration&nbsp;<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.dcd.278147/gov.uscourts.dcd.278147.31.0.pdf" target="_blank">moved Monday</a>&nbsp;to dismiss the suit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, arguing that “providing information to assist criminal investigations—is lawful.”

A hearing on a preliminary injunction to block such information sharing between IRS and DHS is set for April 16 before federal Judge&nbsp;Dabney L. Friedrich, whom President Donald Trump appointed in 2017.

Friedrich ruled against the groups last month, when they asked for a temporary restraining order following a story by The Washington Post that the agencies were considering sharing information in order to find immigrants to deport.

“A single news report about future cooperation between the IRS and DHS does not establish that the plaintiffs’ members are facing imminent injury,” according to the&nbsp;<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.dcd.278147/gov.uscourts.dcd.278147.16.0.pdf" target="_blank">March 19 order.&nbsp;</a>

Nebraska Babies Born in 2024 to Receive $50 Meadowlark Savings Pledge Funds

LINCOLN, Nebraska&nbsp;– Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) were represented by nearly 50 directors and staff in Washington, D.C., March 31 to April 2, 2025.

Nebraska’s NRDs advocate for strengthening tools to preserve and fund natural resources projects, which includes engaging policymakers from the grassroots level with a unified voice.

This grassroots advocacy culminates with a visit to Washington, D.C., allowing NRD staff and directors to meet with congressional leaders and discuss local priorities with national partners on federal legislation and programs.

“Those who work and live among our natural resources are some of our most effective spokespeople,” said Martin Graff, Nebraska Association of Resources Districts president. “Going to Washington is an opportunity to advocate for Nebraska by sharing our personal stories and also hear federal perspectives on issues that could impact us locally.”

While on Capitol Hill, conference attendees spent a day meeting with Nebraska senators and congressmen and participated in a two-day session with federal agencies and conservation partners. NRDs help deliver several federal programs locally, and these partnerships equate into real dollars for Nebraska agriculture and communities. Some of the federal topics and speakers included:

Nebraska’s NRDs Advocate for Conservation Funding in Washington, D.C.

In a landmark study, researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center developed a novel mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease that, for the first time, enables the study of how the human immune system interacts with Alzheimer’s pathology.

Pravin Yeapuri, PhD, R. Lee Mosley, PhD, and Howard Gendelman, MD, of the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience led the investigative team.

The models, developed at UNMC, were described in two recently released papers, one in&nbsp;<a href="https://alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/alz.70084" target="_blank">Alzheimer’s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association</a>, and another in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/nipt-2024-0018/html" target="_blank">Neuroimmune Pharmacology and Therapeutics</a>, a journal created and developed by Dr. Gendelman at UNMC with the Society on NeuroImmune Pharmacology.

These models facilitate translational research, bridging the gap between preclinical research and human clinical trials, particularly in developing next-generation neuroprotective therapies.

“Prior mouse models commonly used for disease prevention and therapeutic interventions to ameliorate Alzheimer’s are significantly limited in their ability to reflect the natural disease course,” Dr. Mosley said. “While these models show cognitive improvement with experimental treatments, they have a poor track record of human clinical trial success.”

For example, Dr. Mosley said past vaccine studies targeting amyloid plaques were adequate in mice but caused severe immune reactions, leading to brain swelling in human trials. “These failures reflect a deeper issue,” he said. “The models lack the complexity of the human immune and genetic landscape.”

“While CRISPR-engineered mouse models have helped us accurately knock in Alzheimer’s-related genes, they miss key features like widespread neuronal loss and neuroinflammation,” Dr. Gendelman said. “Our new models go much further. They show robust neuronal degeneration and can be reconstituted by the human immune system. This opens the door to studying how human immune cells respond to human Alzheimer’s-related proteins, something no previous model could do.”

Dr. Gendelman said this overcomes the major limitations of earlier models, which relied on non-physiological gene overexpression and lacked human immune components.

The team used CRISPR-Cas9 knock-in technology to knock in early onset familial Alzheimer‘s-associated genes while preserving replicate human gene expression patterns, thus more accurately reflecting the true disease.

“These new models are critical to our recent work on T cell-based immunotherapies,” Dr. Yeapuri said. “They let us test how the human immune system responds to Alzheimer’s immunotherapies in a disease-relevant environment. That’s a significant leap forward.

“These models now allow us to simulate human clinical trials in mice equipped with a human immune system, enabling the study of regulatory T cells, tau pathology and neurodegeneration in a physiologically relevant context. They also support testing antibody-based therapies in a system that closely mirrors human biology."

Dr. Gendelman emphasized the new platform set the stage for future clinical trials, which his team has been working toward for decades. “With these tools in hand, we’re closer than ever to developing therapies that work in people,” he said. “The future of Alzheimer’s treatment is finally within reach.”

Lee Mosley, PhD, and Howard Gendelman, MD, of the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience led the investigative team.The models, developed at UNMC, were described in two recently released papers, one in&nbsp;<a href="https://alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/alz.70084" target="_blank">Alzheimer’s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association</a>, and another in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/nipt-2024-0018/html" target="_blank">Neuroimmune Pharmacology and Therapeutics</a>, a journal created and developed by Dr. Gendelman at UNMC with the Society on NeuroImmune Pharmacology.These models facilitate translational research, bridging the gap between preclinical research and human clinical trials, particularly in developing next-generation neuroprotective therapies.“Prior mouse models commonly used for disease prevention and therapeutic interventions to ameliorate Alzheimer’s are significantly limited in their ability to reflect the natural disease course,” Dr. Mosley said. “While these models show cognitive improvement with experimental treatments, they have a poor track record of human clinical trial success.”For example, Dr. Mosley said past vaccine studies targeting amyloid plaques were adequate in mice but caused severe immune reactions, leading to brain swelling in human trials. “These failures reflect a deeper issue,” he said. “The models lack the complexity of the human immune and genetic landscape.”“While CRISPR-engineered mouse models have helped us accurately knock in Alzheimer’s-related genes, they miss key features like widespread neuronal loss and neuroinflammation,” Dr. Gendelman said. “Our new models go much further. They show robust neuronal degeneration and can be reconstituted by the human immune system. This opens the door to studying how human immune cells respond to human Alzheimer’s-related proteins, something no previous model could do.”Dr. Gendelman said this overcomes the major limitations of earlier models, which relied on non-physiological gene overexpression and lacked human immune components.The team used CRISPR-Cas9 knock-in technology to knock in early onset familial Alzheimer‘s-associated genes while preserving replicate human gene expression patterns, thus more accurately reflecting the true disease.“These new models are critical to our recent work on T cell-based immunotherapies,” Dr. Yeapuri said. “They let us test how the human immune system responds to Alzheimer’s immunotherapies in a disease-relevant environment. That’s a significant leap forward.“These models now allow us to simulate human clinical trials in mice equipped with a human immune system, enabling the study of regulatory T cells, tau pathology and neurodegeneration in a physiologically relevant context. Alzheimer’s studies first to use new mouse models that can bridge gap between preclinical research, clinical trials

LINCOLN – A little-known state effort to shame delinquent taxpayers into paying up is still on the job 15 years after it was created.

But the state’s worst tax scofflaw in recent years, a former Omaha business owner, remains at the top of the&nbsp;<a href="https://revenue.nebraska.gov/about/nebraska-delinquent-taxpayer-list/nebraska-delinquent-taxpayers-sorted-amount" target="_blank">state’s so-called “wall of shame”</a>&nbsp;despite the listing, raising questions about the list’s effectiveness.

When it was created by the Nebraska Legislature in 2010, the state was struggling with a budget shortfall, and the public posting of tax scofflaws was billed as a low-cost way to force delinquencies to be paid.

There’s been little publicity about the wall of shame since, despite a similar budget crunch impacting the state this year.

As of March 31, nearly 370 individuals and companies from Nebraska and several other states were listed on the Nebraska Department of Revenue’s website as owing more than $20,000 in state taxes. In total, they add up to owing about $22.6 million.

Topping the list is former Omaha businessman Randall J. Thompson, who owes the state nearly $2.4 million in individual income taxes, according to the website.

That’s about the same amount that Thompson owed when the state’s worst tax scofflaws were first posted in 2010.

Is shame still effective strategy for collecting delinquent taxes?

State Tax Commissioner James Kamm said the wall of shame “is one of the different tools” used by the Department of Revenue to collect delinquent taxes.

“The Department places the collection of delinquent taxes as a high priority,” Kamm said.

One former state tax commissioner, Tony Fulton, who served from 2016-2022, said the list worked for some people who wanted to avoid being publicly listed, but it didn’t work for others.

The state gives 30 days warning before listing an individual or company, giving someone time to pay up before being publicly revealed as owing taxes.

Fulton recalled that it did generate tips to the department.

“It definitely got people’s attention,” he said. “I used to get contacted … ‘Hey, I know this guy.’”

About 20 states utilize walls of shame — roughly the same number as in 2010 — according to the Federation of Tax Administrators, a national group of tax commissioners. Some states list only businesses that owe taxes, while most list both individuals and companies, according to Terri Steenblock the FTA’s tax and revenue administrator.

She said such shame walls have a two-fold purpose: to collect delinquent taxes, but also to inspire voluntary payments of taxes due.

A Nebraska Department of Revenue spokesman said that of the $9.8 billion in taxes paid to the state during the 2023-24 fiscal year, about $60 million in delinquent taxes was deemed eligible to be collected. That compares with $5 billion in total state taxes collected 10 years ago and about $26 million in tax delinquencies deemed collectible.

Patrick Roy, the department spokesman, said that some delinquencies cannot be collected, such as assets held in another state by an out-of-state taxpayer or when a deceased taxpayer has no assets.

Roy said collection of taxes due is assigned to a “dedicated team” within the compliance division of the Revenue Department that knows how to find and legally recover assets. He said the state uses a variety of other methods to collect delinquent taxes, such as tax liens and, as a last resort, selling off assets at auction.

The state does not collect delinquent property taxes. That is a local responsibility for a locally collected tax.

Roy, like Fulton, the former tax commissioner, said they could not comment on an individual taxpayers’ case, thus they could not respond to questions about why Thompson still remains atop the most-taxes-owed list.

Back in 2010, Doug Ewald, who was then state tax commissioner, told the Omaha World-Herald that in general, if a taxpayer has no assets, there’s nothing for the state to recover.

That appears to be the reason Thompson, who would now be 75 or 76 years old, remains atop the delinquent tax roll. He faced a bevy of legal problems starting back in the 2000s.

Thompson owned a day-trading firm, R.J. Thompson Holdings, which he reportedly sold in 2001 for $13 million in cash, bonuses and incentive payments.

But in 2006, a federal tax judge ruled that Thompson had set up a sham tax shelter to avoid paying taxes on $21 million in capital gains from the sale.

In 2014, he was convicted in U.S. District Court of failing to pay federal income taxes he had withheld from employees’ paycheck at his company, American Medical Files. He was sentenced to six months in prison and three years of supervised release.

The money was used, according to court files, for mortgage payments on a luxury home in southwest Omaha and expenses at a Las Vegas casino, the Bellagio. He was ordered to pay $95,505 in restitution, and, as a condition of his supervised release, not to gamble.

A clerk with the U.S. District Court in Nebraska told the Examiner that she could not publicly reveal whether Thompson had paid any of the restitution ordered, which was supposed to be paid off in monthly installments of $250 a month or 7% of his gross income.

Thirteen years ago, the Internal Revenue Service forced a sale of Thompson’s possessions in five storage units in Sarpy County. The possessions, according to Omaha television station KETV, included football helmets signed by Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Bart Starr and Nebraska football stars, as well as boxing gloves signed by Floyd Patterson and Muhammad Ali.

Thompson’s attempts to overturn his convictions on appeal were unsuccessful, and his name last appears in court files in 2020, when Wells Fargo Bank won a revival of a default judgment against Thompson for nonpayment of $12.4 million to the bank. That court order indicated that Thompson, in 2020, still lived in Nebraska, but attempts to reach him via phone or through past attorneys were unsuccessful.

The Examiner was able to leave a voice message with the taxpayer who owes the second-most in delinquent taxes to Nebraska, Ahmer Khan of Frisco, Texas.

Khan owes $1.1 million in sales taxes, prepaid wireless taxes and waste reduction and recycling fees in Sarpy and Douglas Counties, according to the Department of Revenue.

Those messages were not returned by Friday afternoon.

Fischer, Colleagues Introduce Bill to Reauthorize Project Safe Neighborhoods Program

OMAHA, NEB. — As part of a massive multi-state relief effort, the American Red Cross is rushing critical emergency support to thousands of families pummeled by relentless floods and tornadoes across the South and Midwest. This support includes 9 Nebraskans who have deployed or soon will deploy. Severe storms, strong winds, tornadoes and heavy rains have inundated communities leaving a trail of heartbreak with damaged homes, roadways and critical infrastructure. The Nebraskans are joining more than 600 trained Red Cross responders. Red Cross Sends Nebraskans to Help Those Affected by Spring Storms

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen signed a letter of intent to Secretary Brooke Rollins of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), notifying her of Nebraska’s intent to pursue a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) waiver, removing soda and energy drinks from SNAP allowable purchases. Nebraska is the second state to submit such a waiver.&nbsp;

Gov. Pillen was joined by leadership from the Department of Health and Human Services; Dr. Eric Sherman, chief medical officer at the Charles Drew Health Center; Director of the Department of Agriculture Sherry Vinton; and Senator Brian Hardin, chairman of the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee.&nbsp;

“We are starving in the midst of plenty,” said Gov. Pillen. “We are surrounded by an endless number of food and beverage choices that contain numerous preservatives, carbohydrates and sugars, which can lead to obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes and other chronic diseases.”

The SNAP program supports individuals and families with access to nutritious options to improve their health and well-being. However, SNAP currently allows the purchase of any food or beverage that has a nutritional label, regardless of its nutritional value. According to the USDA, soft drinks or soda are the most common SNAP purchase. Approximately 75,000 households or 152,000 individuals receive SNAP benefits in Nebraska. It is estimated 67,690 are youth.&nbsp;

Studies have shown children who drink high levels of soda are more likely to exhibit withdrawn behavior and attention problems. High levels of sugar can also lead to long-term effects such as type 2 diabetes, tooth decay, heart disease, and poor bone health. Caffeine found in energy drinks also has negative effects in children and youth, including increases in stress, anxiety, agitation, sleep disturbance, and high blood pressure, often leading to difficulties in learning and academic performance.&nbsp;

“Unfortunately, the obesity epidemic is only getting worse in the United States. The key to making health improvements is to encourage physical activity, healthy food and drink choices, and healthy eating behaviors,” said pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Eric Sherman, Chief Medical Officer of the Charles Drew Health Center in Omaha. “I appreciate Governor Pillen for his willingness to take this important step to promote health and wellness in Nebraska.”&nbsp;

“Protecting Nebraska’s children is a top priority for Governor Pillen,” said DHHS CEO Steve Corsi. “The decision to omit harmful drinks from SNAP purchases is an important step that will help children and families live healthy lives and have bright futures.”

Once approved by the USDA, DHHS will partner with grocers and other stakeholders to implement a waiver that will ensure Nebraskans are able to maximize their SNAP dollars while accessing healthy options.

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect jailed on multiple allegations after a high-speed chase in rural Jackson County.

Just after 11a.m. Wednesday, a Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a disturbance at Casey’s General Store, 4th and Arizona Avenue in Holton, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

 The suspect in the disturbance allegedly failed to follow a lawful order from the deputy and got into a 2009 Mazda and fled the scene pulling out into Arizona Avenue and continued south out of Holton. 

 A pursuit ensued, with the deputy and Holton Police attempting to stop the vehicle. The pursuit continued southbound on U.S. Highway 75.&nbsp; A Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy deployed a tire deflating device flattening 3 of the vehicle’s tires at 178th Road. 

 A Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy performed a tactical vehicle intervention spinning the suspect’s vehicle into the median at 166th Road. 

The vehicle continued southbound in the median until becoming stuck at 162nd Road. Deputies took the driver, later identified as 38-year-old Martin Daniel Sanchez Martinez of Lincoln, Nebraska into custody. 

 During the incident, traffic on southbound U.S. Highway 75 was stopped for approximately 10 minutes. Martinez is being held in the Jackson County Jail for multiple charges including felony flee and eluding law enforcement and felony interference with law enforcement. 

The sheriff asked for any witnesses of Martinez’ actions at Casey’s or driving from the scene to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at 785-364-2251. The Kansas Highway Patrol and the PBPN Police assisted with the incident.&nbsp;

LINCOLN, NEB. – This week Nebraska’s State FFA Convention brought hundreds of FFA students and their advisors from across the state to Lincoln. Each year the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation selects two recipients for their FFA Advisor of the Year award. This award honors FFA advisors for outstanding work in their local communities.

Emilye Yowell from Meridian Public Schools and Ben Robison from Alma Public Schools were honored at the Nebraska State FFA Convention on Thursday, April 3 in Lincoln. The winning advisors received a plaque and a $1,000 donation to their FFA chapter.

The teachers were nominated by their students and chosen based upon their school and community involvement, leadership development in their classroom, and their ability to keep their students involved in agriculture.

“The Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation is proud to support these exceptional educators. They go above and beyond for their students and the industry they love, and the future of Nebraska agriculture is bright thanks to their work,” said Megahn Schafer, executive director of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation.

Yowell is the FFA Advisor for the Meridian FFA Chapter. Students in Meridian FFA say Yowell is committed to student success. She equips students to try new things and ask big questions. Yowell has led multiple career development teams to state and helped students see the many opportunities FFA and agriculture have to offer.

This award honors FFA advisors for outstanding work in their local communities.Emilye Yowell from Meridian Public Schools and Ben Robison from Alma Public Schools were honored at the Nebraska State FFA Convention on Thursday, April 3 in Lincoln. The winning advisors received a plaque and a $1,000 donation to their FFA chapter.The teachers were nominated by their students and chosen based upon their school and community involvement, leadership development in their classroom, and their ability to keep their students involved in agriculture.“The Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation is proud to support these exceptional educators. Last Congress, Fischer championed and successfully passed nine bills into law, outlined below. Fischer Ranked in Top 10 Most Effective GOP Senators

On March 28, nearly 300 University of Nebraska Medical Center dental, dental hygiene and nursing students provided free dental care to more than 200 children from throughout Nebraska, many of whom have little or no access to dental services.

Participants of UNMC Children’s Dental Day – an annual outreach program through the UNMC College of Dentistry – came from Lexington, Columbus, Crete, Grand Island, Hastings and York. Children are identified through school nurses and district health departments and provided services at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln.

Under the direction of faculty from the UNMC Colleges of Dentistry and Nursing, and with support of the college staff, UNMC students cleaned teeth, filled cavities, addressed soreness and infections. They also worked hard to make the day a memorable and pleasant one for the children in their care.

Hanna Hawks, a first-year dental student volunteer from Wichita, Kansas, said she was aware of the college’s Children’s Dental Day when she applied to the school.

She was excited to be taking part (although she was volunteering in a white coat, not a tooth fairy costume.)

“I love the way that this school focuses on giving back,” Hawks said.

Hawks said she and her fellow D1s were concentrating on providing a welcoming environment to help calm nervous kiddos.

“This is a great opportunity to help,” Hawks said. “Obviously, we're not giving treatments, but our job also is important, because we're managing the emotions of a lot of the kids and families. Serving in that way is really cool, because we can't in a lot of other ways – yet. In the next few years, we'll be getting to provide the treatments, too.”

Since 2001, more than 6,000 children have received treatment at Children’s Dental Day, and more than $3 million in dental services have been provided.

“This is something that many of the faculty are passionate about,” said Claire Koukol, DDS, assistant professor in the college’s department of growth and development and one of the faculty organizers of the event. “We see how important this is to the kids. We try to make it as positive an experience as possible, because we want them to be good dental patients as adults. And we also want them to not be in pain.”

Robin Johnson said her 8-year-old daughter Kaytlyn was excited to come from Hastings for the event, adding that the students seemed good at their job and were friendly.

Dental work at the event ranges from cleanings, restorations and extractions to pulpotomies, stainless steel crowns and root canal therapy.&nbsp;Children also participate in educational activities designed to increase their awareness of the importance of oral health.

Fourth-year dental student Nick Stolze said it was important for him, and his fellow students, to give back.
