OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha police detective says the man charged with murder and other counts in the November shooting death of his friend had been aiming for another man, who was injured. 

The Omaha World-Herald reports that the detective testified Tuesday at a hearing for 21-year-old Tip Mut, of Omaha, who is charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, two weapons counts and tampering with evidence in the Nov. 7 shooting death of 21-year-old Gabriel Miller. 

A judge ruled Tuesday that Mut will stand trial on the charges. 

Police say Mut and Miller had gone together to the party where a fight broke out. 

Police believe Mut pulled a gun and shot Goa Dat, but also hit his friend Miller.

UNMC announces dean's list for spring 2021 

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — South Dakota-based ethanol company POET has purchased the biofuels assets of Flint Hills Resources, including five ethanol plants in Iowa and one in Nebraska.

 The deal announced Tuesday also includes ethanol distribution terminals in Texas and Georgia. POET, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is increasing its production to 33 biofuels production plants in eight states and will have a capacity to produce 3 billion gallons annually.

 The Iowa ethanol plants are in Arthur, Fairbank, Iowa Falls, Menlo and Shell Rock. 

The Nebraska plant is in Fremont, and the ethanol terminals are in Buda, Texas, and Camilla, Georgia.

La Vista police said Tuesday they are conducing an “extensive search” in the blocks around Ryan Larsen's home. 

Ryan has been missing since May 17, when he left his school. 

Multiple law enforcement agents have been search since then, including lowering a lake at the Walnut Creek Recreation Area. 

Authorities have said Ryan has been without medication he takes for seizures since he disappeared.

 Ryan his white, 5-foot-8 and about 125 lbs. He has brown hair and hazel eyes.

Police focus search for missing Nebraska boy near his home

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of 
Labor announced today the award of more than $52 million in grants to 
help homeless veterans return to meaningful employment and address the 
complex problems facing homeless veterans.

Administered by the department’s <a href="https://www.dol.gov/agencies/vets">Veterans’ Employment and Training Service</a>,
 Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program funding also supports Homeless 
Female Veterans’ and Veterans with Families program and the Incarcerated
 Veterans’ Transition Program grants. Ending homelessness among veterans
 has long been a priority for the department. VETS designs these 
programs to provide training, skills development and career support.

“As the nation continues its recovery from the pandemic, 
initiatives like these are more important than ever,” said Secretary 
Marty Walsh. “Our veterans deserve our best efforts to ensure they have a
 safe place to live, means to support themselves and their families and 
opportunities to pursue a fulfilling career.”

The department will award 119 continuation grants 
totaling more than $40 million and 36 new three-year grant awards 
totaling more than $12 million to provide a wide range of services to 
veterans currently homeless or at risk of homelessness. In addition to 
working with VETS, grant recipients partner with the U.S. Department of 
Veterans Affairs’ Supportive Service for Veteran Families&nbsp;program and 
the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care
 program.

U.S. awards $52M in grants to help homeless veterans re-enter workforce

WASHINGTON
 — The Internal Revenue Service today reminded taxpayers living and 
working outside of the United States that they must file their 2020 
federal income tax return by Tuesday, June 15. This deadline applies to 
both <a href="https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/us-citizens-and-resident-aliens-abroad">U.S. citizens and resident aliens abroad</a>, including those with dual citizenship.

Just as most taxpayers in the United States are required to timely 
file their tax returns with the IRS, those living and working in another
 country are also required to file. An automatic two-month deadline 
extension is normally granted for those overseas and in 2021 that date 
is still June 15 even though the normal income tax filing deadline was 
extended a month from April 15 to <a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-day-for-individuals-extended-to-may-17-treasury-irs-extend-filing-and-payment-deadline">May 17</a>.

An income tax filing requirement generally applies even if a taxpayer qualifies for tax benefits, such as the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-earned-income-exclusion">Foreign Earned Income Exclusion</a> or the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-tax-credit">Foreign Tax Credit</a>,
 which substantially reduce or eliminate U.S. tax liability. These tax 
benefits are only available if an eligible taxpayer files a U.S. income 
tax return.

A taxpayer qualifies for the special June 15 filing deadline if both 
their tax home and abode are outside the United States and Puerto Rico. 
Those serving in the military outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico on the 
regular due date of their tax return also qualify for the extension to 
June 15. IRS recommends attaching a statement if one of these two 
situations apply.

Reporting required for foreign accounts and assets

Federal law requires U.S. citizens and resident aliens to report any 
worldwide income, including income from foreign trusts and foreign bank 
and securities accounts. In most cases, affected taxpayers need to

In addition, certain taxpayers may also have to complete and attach to their return&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-8938">Form 8938, Statement of Foreign Financial Assets</a>.
 Generally, U.S. citizens, resident aliens and certain nonresident 
aliens must report specified foreign financial assets on this form if 
the aggregate value of those assets exceeds certain thresholds. See the

Foreign accounts reporting deadline&nbsp;

Separate from reporting specified foreign financial assets on their 
tax return, taxpayers with an interest in, or signature or other 
authority over foreign financial accounts whose aggregate value exceeded

 Because of this threshold, the IRS encourages taxpayers with foreign

Any income received or deductible expenses paid in foreign currency

31 exchange rate for all transactions, regardless of the actual exchange
 rate on the date of the transaction. Generally, the IRS accepts any

Tax return deadline looming for U.S. taxpayers living abroad

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Nine men have been accused in West Virginia of participating in romance and other online scams that defrauded at least 200 people of more than $2.5 million.

 Grand jury indictments in federal court in Charleston charge the men with mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and receipt of stolen property. 

Federal prosecutors say all nine men have been apprehended by authorities in seven states. 

Two of the defendants lived in West Virginia, two were from Ohio and two from Washington, D.C. The others were from Stone Mountain, Georgia; Beltsville, Maryland; and Omaha, Nebraska. 

According to the indictments, victims were coerced into sending money to various bank accounts.

Feds: Omaha man, 8 others accused in West Virginia of online fraud scheme

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A ransomware attack on the world’s largest meat company is disrupting production around the world just weeks after a similar incident shut down a U.S. oil pipeline.

The Brazilian meat processor JBS SA notified the U.S. of a ransom demand from a criminal organization likely based in Russia, White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed Tuesday. She said the White House and the Department of Agriculture have been in touch with the company several times this week.

JBS has extensive facilities in the U.S., including processing plants in Texas and Colorado. Two shifts were canceled Tuesday at JBS’ meatpacking plant in Greeley, Colorado, according to UFCW Local 7, which represents 3,000 workers at the plant.

The local union also has reports from workers that production was down on Monday but that is unconfirmed, according to spokesman Dakar Lanzino. Union representatives were meeting Monday to try to get more information from the company, Lanzino said.

JBS has not stated publicly that the attack was ransomware.

Jean-Pierre said the White House “is engaging directly with the Russian government on this matter and delivering the message that responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals.” The FBI is investigating the incident, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is offering technical support to JBS.

In addition, USDA has spoken to several major meat processors in the U.S. to alert them to the situation, and the White House is assessing any potential impact on the nation’s meat supply.

The company said late Tuesday that it had made “significant progress” in dealing with the cyberattack and expected the “vast majority” of its plants to be operating on Wednesday

In a statement Sunday, JBS said the cyberattack affected servers supporting its operations in North America and Australia. The company said it notified authorities and engaged third-party experts to resolve the problem as soon as possible. Backup servers weren’t affected.

Thousands of Australian meat plant workers had no work for a second day Tuesday, and a government minister said it might be days before production resumes. JBS is Australia’s largest meat and food processing company, with 47 facilities across the country including abattoirs, feedlots and meat processing sites. JBS employs around 11,000 people in Australia.

It’s not the first time a ransomware attack has targeted a food company. Last November, Milan-based Campari Group said it was the victim of a ransomware attack that caused a temporary technology outage and compromised some business and personal data.

In March, Molson Coors announced a cyber attack that affected its production and shipping.

Last month, a gang of hackers shut down operation of the Colonial Pipeline, the largest U.S. fuel pipeline. Colonial Pipeline confirmed it paid $4.4 million to the hackers

Biden’s visit Tuesday, in which he will grieve for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tulsa-massacres-race-and-ethnicity-af589e8c37a31bcd30f0f7977a9ca4c0">the hundreds of Black people killed</a>&nbsp;by a white mob a century ago, comes amid&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/racial-injustice">a national reckoning on racial justice</a>. And it will stand in stark contrast to the most recent visit to Tulsa by a president, which took place last year.

Biden will be the first president to participate in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tulsa-race-massacre-centennial-bbfa1f6ad42b104d258c13999a2d7aa4">remembrances of the destruction</a>&nbsp;of what was known as “Black Wall Street.” In 1921 — on May 31 and June 1 — Tulsa’s white residents and civil society leaders looted and burned to the ground the Greenwood district and used planes to drop projectiles on it.

He will meet privately with survivors of the massacre. Up to 300 Black Tulsans were killed, and thousands of survivors were forced for a time into internment camps overseen by the National Guard. Burned bricks and a fragment of a church basement are about all that survive today of the more than 30-block historically Black district.

America’s continuing struggle over racial justice will continue to test Biden, whose presidency would have been impossible without overwhelming&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-joe-biden-race-and-ethnicity-virus-outbreak-georgia-7a843bbce00713cfde6c3fdbc2e31eb7">support from Black voters</a>, both in the Democratic primaries and the general election.

Biden has pledged to help combat racism in policing and other areas of life following nationwide protests after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/death-of-george-floyd">George Floyd’s death</a>&nbsp;a year ago that reignited a national conversation about race. Floyd, a Black man, was killed by white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes.

After&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/derek-chauvin-trial-live-updates-04-20-2021-955a78df9a7a51835ad63afb8ce9b5c1">Chauvin was convicted</a>&nbsp;in April, Biden said the country’s work was far from finished with the verdict, declaring, “We can’t stop here.”

He called on Congress to act swiftly to address&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nyc-state-wire-george-floyd-death-of-george-floyd-police-police-reform-988260d4657103cd968bad7f039b0e19">policing reform</a>. But he has also long projected himself as an ally of police, who are struggling with criticism about long-used tactics and training methods and difficulties in recruitment.

Despite its horror, the Tulsa massacre has only recently entered the national discourse — and the presidential visit will put an even brighter spotlight on the event.

“This is so important because we have to recognize what we have done if we are going to be otherwise,” said Eddie Glaude, chair of the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University. Biden’s visit, Glaude said, “has to be more than symbolic. To tell the truth is the precondition for reconciliation, and reconciliation is the basis for repair.”

Biden, while visiting the Greenwood Cultural Center, is set to announce new measures to help narrow the wealth gap between Blacks and whites and reinvest in underserved communities by expanding access to homeownership and small-business ownership.

The White House said the administration will take steps to address disparities that result in Black-owned homes being appraised at tens of thousands of dollars less than comparable homes owned by whites as well as issue new federal rules to fight housing discrimination.

The administration is also setting a goal of increasing the share of federal contracts awarded to small disadvantaged businesses by 50% by 2026, funneling an estimated additional $100 billion to such businesses over the five-year period, according to the White House.

Biden will also discuss ways his jobs plan — still a subject of negotiation with Congress — can help create jobs and build wealth in communities of color.

Historians say the massacre in Tulsa began after a local newspaper drummed up a furor over a Black man accused of stepping on a white girl’s foot. When Black Tulsans showed up with guns to prevent the man’s lynching, white residents responded with overwhelming force.

A grand jury investigation at the time concluded, without evidence, that unidentified agitators had given Tulsa’s African Americans both their firearms and what was described as their mistaken belief “in equal rights, social equality and their ability to demand the same.”

Organizers called off a headline commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, saying no agreement could be reached over monetary payments to three survivors of the deadly attack. It highlights broader debates over reparations for racial injustice.

Reparations for Black Americans whose ancestors were enslaved and for other racial discrimination have been debated in the U.S. since slavery ended in 1865. Now they are being discussed by colleges and universities with ties to slavery and by local governments looking to make cash payments to Black residents.

But some of Tulsa’s Black residents question whether the $20 million spent to build the Greenwood Rising museum in an increasingly gentrified part of the city could have been better spent helping Black descendants of the massacre or residents of the city’s predominantly Black north side several miles away from Greenwood.

Disagreements among Black leaders in Tulsa over the handling of commemorative events and millions of dollars in donations have led to two disparate groups planning separate slates of anniversary events.

Biden, who was vice president to the nation’s first Black president and who chose&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-first-black-woman-vp-asian-12ddda402cab20c5aafbd7737ac619c8">a Black woman</a>&nbsp;as his own vice president, backs a study of reparations, both in Tulsa and more broadly, but has not committed to supporting payments. He recently declared the need for America to confront its ugly past, saying, “We must acknowledge that there can be no realization of the American dream without grappling with the original sin of slavery and the centuries-long campaign of violence, fear and trauma wrought upon African American people in this country.”

He issued a proclamation designating Monday as a “day of remembrance” for the massacre.

Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump visited Tulsa last year under vastly different circumstances.

After suspending his campaign rallies because of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/coronavirus-pandemic">the coronavirus pandemic</a>, Trump, a Republican, chose Tulsa as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-donald-trump-ap-top-news-racial-injustice-tulsa-89a91180f11abadc70500f3222a694e5">the place to mark his return</a>. But his decision to schedule the rally on June 19, the holiday known as Juneteenth that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, was met with such fierce criticism that he postponed the event by a day. The rally was still marked by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/latin-america-virus-outbreak-donald-trump-ap-top-news-elections-1a59b4efe97f2249d414ae4f0b3c6495">protests outside and empty seats inside</a>&nbsp;an arena downtown.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police in Omaha say a man has died after the motorcycle he was driving crashed as he tried to exit Interstate 80 at 60th Street. Police say the crash happened around 3:30 p.m&nbsp;Sunday on an interstate offramp, killing 37-year-old Travis McQueen, of Omaha.

 Investigators say McQueen lost control of the bike and hit a light pole.

 McQueen was rushed by paramedics to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

Police continue to investigate the crash.

Twenty-three-year-old Samuel Joseph Martinez had been studying microbiology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before he flew to Kauai on May 12 with plans to spend nearly two weeks hiking and camping.

 His father, Ted Martinez, said Saturday the family hasn’t heard from Samuel Martinez since a few hours after he landed on the island.

Nebraska man reported missing after camping trip to Hawaii

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Thousands of meat workers had no work for a second day on Tuesday after a cyberattack crippled the world’s largest meat processing company. A government minister said it might be days before production resumes.

JBS is also Australia’s largest meat and food processing company, with 47 facilities across the country including abattoirs, feedlots and meat processing sites. JBS employs around 11,000 people.

JBS USA said in a statement from Greeley, Colorado, on Monday that it was the target on Sunday of an “organized cybersecurity attack” affecting some of its servers supporting its North American and Australian IT systems.

“The company’s backup servers were not affected and it is actively working with an Incident Response firm to restore its systems as soon as possible,” the statement said.

Australian Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said the government and Australian Federal Police were working with JBS to resolve the problems and to pursue those responsible.

“Despite the fact that JBS accounts for around 20% of our processing production here in Australia, we’re not expecting there to be significant impacts on exports so long as this isn’t a protracted shutdown,” Littleproud said on Tuesday.

“We’re also working with JBS right here in Australia to make sure that we can get some limited capacity up and going in the next couple of days. JBS have been very proactive in that,” he said.

Littleproud said it was too early to say whether it was a ransomware attack or who might be responsible.

Australian staff learned of the attack when they were turned away from their workplaces on Monday.

JBS exports about 70% of what it produces in Australia. But Australia and New Zealand account for only 4% of the company’s global revenue.

Several consignments of cattle in Queensland state were cancelled at short notice and cattle trucks were turned around, Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

“We had to send them up on Sunday afternoon and then we got the message in the morning that they’d have to cancel the train because the meat works was going to be shutting for an indefinite amount of time,” Queensland cattle rancher Colin Baker told ABC.

“We had a wasted day . . . because mustering the cattle, sorting them out and then trucking them up there and then we had to bring them home today and let them all go again,” Baker added.

JBS employs around 11,000 people.JBS USA said in a statement from Greeley, Colorado, on Monday that it was the target on Sunday of an “organized cybersecurity attack” affecting some of its servers supporting its North American and Australian IT systems.“The company’s backup servers were not affected and it is actively working with an Incident Response firm to restore its systems as soon as possible,” the statement said.Australian Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said the government and Australian Federal Police were working with JBS to resolve the problems and to pursue those responsible.“Despite the fact that JBS accounts for around 20% of our processing production here in Australia, we’re not expecting there to be significant impacts on exports so long as this isn’t a protracted shutdown,” Littleproud said on Tuesday.“We’re also working with JBS right here in Australia to make sure that we can get some limited capacity up and going in the next couple of days. JBS have been very proactive in that,” he said.Littleproud said it was too early to say whether it was a ransomware attack or who might be responsible.Australian staff learned of the attack when they were turned away from their workplaces on Monday.JBS exports about 70% of what it produces in Australia. But Australia and New Zealand account for only 4% of the company’s global revenue.Several consignments of cattle in Queensland state were cancelled at short notice and cattle trucks were turned around, Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.“We had to send them up on Sunday afternoon and then we got the message in the morning that they’d have to cancel the train because the meat works was going to be shutting for an indefinite amount of time,” Queensland cattle rancher Colin Baker told ABC.“We had a wasted day . . . because mustering the cattle, sorting them out and then trucking them up there and then we had to bring them home today and let them all go again,” Baker added.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A town southwest of Omaha is poised to double in size and add nearly 3,000 people after the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled in its favor in an annexation dispute with its home county. 

The Omaha World-Herald reports that the high court ruled Friday that a lower court failed to consider future development plans in the area that Gretna sought to annex.

Gretna has about 4,400 residents and sought in 2017 to annex nearly 3,000 acres that include housing subdivisions.

 Sarpy County filed a lawsuit challenging the annexation over 22 parcels of agricultural land. 

State law says cities can annex only “urban or suburban" land.
