PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota’s attorney general has concluded a fatal shooting by Rapid City police last month was a justified use of deadly force.

 Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg and the state Division of Criminal Investigation on Monday released a summary on the death of Anthony Angel. 

The 30-year-old Rapid City man was killed May 13 after police stopped a vehicle that was under surveillance for possible illegal drug activity. 

According to the summary, Angel, a passenger in the vehicle, got out, backed away from officers and aimed a handgun at them. 

It says shots were exchanged and Angel was hit.

 He died the following day at a Rapid City hospital.&nbsp;

The state health department said that as of Sunday morning the state has seen 5,898 cases and 75 deaths.

 Minnehaha County leads the state with 3,479 cases, followed by Beadle County with 446. 

Nearly 4,900 people have recovered across the state. 

Eighty-seven people are currently hospitalized. 

Fifty-two percent of the state's hospital beds remain available.

Officials report 65 new COVID-19 cases in South Dakota

WASHINGTON– Lakeside Refrigerated Services, a Swedesboro, N.J. establishment, is recalling approximately 42,922 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with&nbsp;E. coli&nbsp;O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Sunday.

The raw ground beef items were produced on June 1, 2020. The following products are subject to recall: &nbsp;

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 46841” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide and also sold at Walmart.

The problem was discovered during routine FSIS testing. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.&nbsp;E. coli&nbsp;O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2–8 days (3–4 days, on average) after exposure the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their&nbsp;customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls">www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls</a>.

FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160°F. The only way to confirm that ground beef is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/safetempchart">https://www.fsis.usda.gov/safetempchart</a>.

Beef products recalled due to possible E.coli contamination

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A proposal to allow the first black bear hunt in modern Missouri history is drawing strong interest, particularly from opponents.

The Missouri Department of Conservation asked for public response to a plan for a limited black bear hunt next year as a way to manage a bear population that is growing and expanding its range. The department said between 540 and 840 black bears live in Missouri, mostly south of the Missouri River.

The state Conservation Commission must ultimately approve the proposal.

The comment period, which ended June 5, drew more than 3,300 responses. As of June 2, more than 67% of the respondents opposed the idea,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/state-and-regional/fur-flies-over-missouri-proposal-to-allow-hunting-of-black-bears/article_57908419-572d-586a-b279-e8e0d985fac0.html">according&nbsp;</a>to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Some opponents object to hunting generally, while others didn't like some details of the plan, such as imposing a quota or holding the bear hunt during deer hunting season.

More than 1,000 survey respondents supported plans for the bear hunt. And the Conservation Federation of Missouri, a nonprofit organization that represents 100 groups with more than 80,000 affiliated members, favors the hunt.

“We agree that it’s crucial to use science-based methods to manage a self-sustaining population of black bears, focusing on research and monitoring, population management, and habitat management,” said Tyler Schwartze, the group’s executive director.

Only Missouri residents would be allowed to hunt the bears, and hunters would be limited to one bear. Because most bears live south of the Missouri River, conservation officials would create three “Bear Management Zones.”

The hunt would start the third Monday of October 2021, last no longer than 10 days and end if hunters reached their quota before then. Quotas would be established for each zone in the spring before the hunt.

Baiting and use of dogs wouldn’t be allowed, and at least 10% of permits designated for each zone would go to qualified landowners. An application for a permit would cost $10, with those who won licenses from a random drawing paying $25 for the permit.

Laura Conlee, chief furbearer biologist for the Department of Conservation, said hunters would be allowed to kill any bear that is by itself, but not bears in groups — such as a sow with cubs nearby.

Comments opposing the bear hunt came from across Missouri but also from other states and even Germany.

"My heart breaks for these wonderful highly intelligent animals! I kindly ask you to NOT allow such a massacre!” wrote Vera Kebsch-Müller of Germany. “Hunting is barbaric, extremely brutal and perverse and those who are able to do it are no humans in my eyes.”

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Jeep Laredo was northbound on U.S. 281 HWY eleven miles south of Osborne. 

The Jeep traveled off the right side of the roadway, back onto the roadway, crossed the centerline, traveled off the roadway to the left, returned to the road and rolled.&nbsp;Both occupants were ejected.

&nbsp;Thomas F. Scott, 85, and Nyla J. Scott, 77, both of Chambers, Nebraska were pronounced dead at the scene and were transported to&nbsp; Clark-Gashaw Morturary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

First responders were unable to determine who was driving. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.&nbsp;

NEW YORK (AP) — Take the stairs, not the elevator, down from your hotel room. Encourage people to bring their own food and drinks to your cookout. Use hand sanitizer after banking at an ATM. Call ahead to restaurants and nail salons to make sure staff are wearing face coverings. And no high-fives — or even elbow bumps — at the gym.

These are some of the tips <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/activities.html">in long-awaited guidance</a> from U.S. health officials about how to reduce risk of coronavirus infection for Americans who are attempting some semblance of normal life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted the guidelines Friday, along with a second set for organizing and attending big gatherings such as includes concerts, sporting events, protests and political rallies.

But the guidelines are “not intended to endorse any particular type of event,” the CDC’s Dr. Jay Butler said in a Friday call with reporters.

The staging and attendance of such events should be in accordance with what local health officials are advising, based on much the coronavirus is spreading in a particular community, he added.

<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/activities.html">The guidelines </a>are long overdue, some health experts say.

Julia Marcus, an infectious disease researcher at Harvard Medical School, has likened stay-at-home suggestions to “abstinence-only” messaging and has pressed for advice to help people minimize risk. She said she was delighted by the CDC’s tips.

“I think it’s a huge step in the right direction,” Marcus said. “These guidelines are really directed toward ordinary Americans trying to make decisions about risk every day.”

But there are notable omissions. There’s nothing about precautions to take before going to church, no guidance about dating and sex and no explicit advice on a topic that some doctors say they get asked all the time: Is it OK to take the kids to visit grandparents?

“Visiting grandma is something I must address three times a week,“ said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University infectious disease expert.

“My empathy goes out to the CDC. It’s very, very difficult to have a precise answer for every circumstance,” he added.

Stay-at-home orders, school shutdowns and business closings were followed by a national flattening in the rate of new cases. In recent weeks, many states have started reopening as they face pressure to get the pandemic-damaged economy going again. And cases are rising in nearly half the states, according to an Associated Press analysis.

The CDC has put out many sets of guidelines, including some for churches, camps, schools and transit agencies. But until now, the organization hasn’t offered specific advice to people trying to decide whether to take vacations, get their nails done, host barbecues, visit a bank or library, go out to eat or exercise at a gym.

The CDC’s director, Dr. Robert Redfield, called the new guidelines “common sense suggestions,” not mandates. State or local governments may want to reimpose stricter measures if new outbreaks occur, but that’s a call for them to make, CDC officials said.

The guidelines repeat earlier advice about wearing face coverings, especially if it’s difficult to keep at least 6 feet away from other people.

They also offers a list of questions people should consider before going out, and some things to think about in particular situations. For example, it suggests that house parties be held outside, guests be greeted with a wave instead of a hug and that everyone bring their own food and drinks.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Police have identified a man killed in a central Omaha shooting as a western Iowa resident.

John Miles, 41, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, died in the Thursday shooting, police said Friday.

The shooting happened around noon Thursday, when officers were called to the apartment complex near 79th and Blondo, police said in a news release. Arriving officers found a man - later identified as Miles - dead inside the complex, police said.

Police said they are searching for a 31-year-old man they suspect in the shooting, but no arrests had been reported by late Friday morning.

LINCOLN, Neb-Nebraska State Troopers saved an 18-year-old from being hit by a train late Thursday evening following a pursuit earlier in the evening.

At approximately 8:00 p.m. Thursday, a trooper observed a Kia Forte traveling at 113 miles per hour on Interstate 80 in Lincoln, near mile marker 408. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled. The trooper initiated a pursuit, but discontinued the pursuit out of caution for the public as the vehicle entered local roads in Lincoln at a high rate of speed. During the pursuit, NSP was able to identify the driver of the vehicle.

Later in the evening, another trooper located the same vehicle in Omaha, near 53rd&nbsp;and Pratt Street. As the trooper attempted to contact the driver, the vehicle drove off, running over the trooper’s foot. Troopers were able to track the vehicle with assistance from the Omaha Police Department helicopter as it drove west out of Omaha on I-80.

The Kia then left I-80 at exit 432 and began traveling west on Highway 6. Near the intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 63, west of Ashland, troopers were able to successfully deploy stop sticks to bring the vehicle to a stop. When the vehicle came to a stop, the driver fled on foot.

The driver ran to nearby railroad tracks and laid down as a train was approaching. Troopers then ran onto the tracks and pulled the subject away as the train was trying to stop. Neither the juvenile nor any troopers were injured in the incident.

The driver, an 18-year-old male from Omaha, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, no operator’s license, and traffic violations. He was lodged in Lancaster County Jail.

FEMA selected Amanda Hingorani of Gretna, Nebraska from FEMA Region 7 along with six other new members to join the returning council members. FEMA Region 7 is comprised of the States of Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska; and home to nine federally recognized tribes. Council members were selected based on their dedication to public service, community involvement and potential to expand their impact as national supporters for youth preparedness.

The Department of Health reported deaths in Brown, Pennington, Minnehaha and Union counties.

 One person in their 40s, one person in their 60s and two people over 80 died. 

The state has tallied 73 deaths from COVID-19. 

The tally of cases during the pandemic rose to 5,665, but 82% of those have recovered. 

The economic fallout from the pandemic has showed signs of letting up, but 817 people filed still filed claims for unemployment for the first time during the week ending June 6.

Investigators say 86-year-old Arden Bredemeier, of Sabetha, Kansas, was driving a farm tractor north on the highway when he tried to turn into a private drive and and was hit by a southbound semitrailer.

 The crash closed a stretch of the highway for about two hours.

 Pawnee County Attorney Jennifer Ladman says no charges are expected in the crash.

A storm that produced snowfall for parts of Nevada and Utah started to push toward the Rocky Mountain states during the overnight hours and into Tuesday morning.

Alta, Utah, picked up more than a foot of snow, with a three-day storm total of 16.6 inches, as of Monday, according to the&nbsp;National Weather Service (NWS, as the storm continued moving eastward.

Temperatures tumbled as the snow fell in portions of Colorado and Wyoming, giving way to near-record late-season snowfall for many areas.

Rare June snowstorm blankets Colorado Springs and parts of Wyoming

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Marijuana legalization advocates have kicked off their campaign to convince South Dakota voters to vote to legalize both medical and recreational marijuana in the November general election.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota has reported three new deaths from COVID-19, along with 52 new cases.

 The state has tallied 68 deaths from COVID-19. The deaths reported Tuesday came from residents of Minnehaha, Lake and Pennington counties. 

One person in their 50s and two people over 80 died. 

The state has confirmed 5,523 cases of the virus, but over 81% of those have recovered. 

Health authorities reported there are currently 972 people with active cases, including 90 who are hospitalized.

 There were 96 new cases per 100,000 people in South Dakota over the past two weeks.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota has reported three new deaths from COVID-19, along with 52 new cases. The state has tallied 68 deaths from COVID-19. The deaths reported Tuesday came from residents of Minnehaha, Lake and Pennington counties. One person in their 50s and two people over 80 died. The state has confirmed 5,523 cases of the virus, but over 81% of those have recovered. Health authorities reported there are currently 972 people with active cases, including 90 who are hospitalized. There were 96 new cases per 100,000 people in South Dakota over the past two weeks.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (Rapid City Journal) — Bond has been set at $1 million cash for a man accused in a fatal beating at an apartment in Rapid City. 

Twenty-nine-year-old Lawrence Mexican is charged with second-degree murder in the brutal beating of Harry Black Bear Saturday. 

Mexican appeared in Pennington County Court Monday by video from the jail. 

The prosecution has not commented on a motive for the slaying or if the two knew each other. 

Magistrate Judge Scott Bogue said Mexican left the 48-year-old victim in a pool of blood and covered in blood at the Palms Apartments. 

The Rapid City Journal reports Bogue rejected the defense request for a $100,000 cash or surety bond.&nbsp;

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After 33 seasons on the air, “Cops” has been dropped by the Paramount Network as protests against police proliferate around the world.

“Cops is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a spokesperson for the cable channel said in a statement Tuesday.

The show had been pulled temporarily from the air in late May, when protests aimed at police over the death of George Floyd began to gain momentum. That move was made permanent Tuesday.

It’s not clear whether the company that makes the show, Langley Productions, would try to find a new home for it. A voicemail at a company phone number was not accepting messages.

The reality show, with its widely known reggae theme song “Bad Boys,” allowed viewers to ride along with police officers on patrol in various cities.

It ran on the Fox network for 25 years until 2013, when Viacom-owned Spike TV picked it up. The show remained on the air after Spike was re-branded as the Paramount Network in 2018.

LINCOLN, Neb. (Lincoln Journal Star) — Authorities say a Nebraska inmate who walked away from the Community Corrections Center-Lincoln has been arrested at a restaurant in Lincoln.

 The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says Viet Tran was taken to the prison system’s Diagnostic and Evaluation Center after his arrest Monday night. 

The Lincoln Journal Star reports Tran has served about eight years of a 13- to 26-year sentence for multiple convictions in Lancaster County, including theft by deception and disturbing the peace.&nbsp;

Missing Nebraska inmate arrested at Lincoln restaurant

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Authorities in central Nebraska have identified a man whose body was pulled from a water-filled canal a couple of miles southwest of North Platte. 

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office says the body was that of 68-year-old Nicholas Legas, of rural North Platte. 

Officials were called around 11 a.m. Monday when Legas' coworkers found a body in the water.

 Deputies and a dive team responded to the scene and pulled the body from the water. 

Lincoln County Sheriff Jerome Kramer said Legas' coworkers and family members began searching for him when he did not show up for work Monday morning. 

An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.

FAIRBURY, Neb. (AP) — Storms that brought strong winds, hail and heavy rain to Nebraska overnight also formed a weak tornado that briefly razed farmland west of Fairbury in southeastern Nebraska. 

The National Weather Service reports that the tornado was spotted around 6 p.m. Tuesday. 

There were no reports of damage or injuries with the twister. Weather Service meteorologist Brett Albright said damage reports across the eastern half of the state were minor and included mostly downed tree limbs from strong winds and gusts — one which reached 91 mph at the Fairbury airport.

 The high winds left thousands of customers in the state without power.
