HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) - A Hastings man initially charged with murder has been given 38 to 40 years in prison.

Adams County District Court records say 21-year-old Deante Mullen was sentenced Tuesday. He'd pleaded&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/b052abd8a0604dd6b54b3b312808f4f9" target="_blank">guilty</a>&nbsp;to attempted robbery and being an accessory to a felony after prosecutors dropped the murder charge. The judge credited Mullen with 777 days already served.

Prosecutors have said Mullen and another man, Daniel Harden, tried to rob Jose Hansen on Sept. 11, 2017, and Hansen was shot in the back. Harden was acquitted of murder and weapons charges but convicted of robbery conspiracy. He was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/db510c774f58b3a4aee5e3ff7996e0b5" target="_blank">sentenced</a>&nbsp;in January to 40 to 44 years.

Mullen testified against Harden, as did Katherine Creigh, who pleaded&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/30ca5e0b42534d539b8ce0f72b25c0fe" target="_blank">guilty</a>&nbsp;to misdemeanor obstruction of government operations. She was sentenced to a year.

Administrators said the 17-year-old and the supervisor of in-school suspension were walking down a hall Tuesday when the student hit the staffer. Other staffers rushed to break up the melee, and the staffer and student fell to the floor, hitting their heads.

District spokeswoman Mindy Burbach said the two had been talking as they walked down the hall but were not arguing.

The names of those involved have not been released. Police are investigating the incident.

The South Dakota House has passed a proposal to legalize and regulate the growth, processing and transportation of industrial hemp in the state. 

Legislators didn't even debate the bill as it passed with a two-thirds majority. 

It will next be considered by the Senate.

 If that body also passes it and Gov. Kristi Noem signs it into law, it could go into effect immediately. 

Noem's office estimates it would cost about $3.5 million to get the program up and running. 

She wants legislators to figure out how to make room in the budget for it.

The CDC issued a negative finding Sunday on a large batch of specimens. Among those tested were three people who had been hospitalized with symptoms and released. 

On Monday, authorities discovered that one of them had tested positive and that patient was sent back to a hospital. 

The agency says it will now assign a laboratory specialist to prevent incorrect labeling.

Denver chosen for 2020 'Hot Wheels Legends Car Competition'

One of two people who attacked a staff member before escaping the state's Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center in Kearney more than a year ago has been imprisoned. 

Court records say 18-year-old Edward Gonzales was sentenced Friday to five to 10 years in prison for the escape assault and other crimes last year.

 Gonzales have said Gonzales and Luke Cuello attacked a center employee on Feb. 24, 2019, when she was bringing Cuello medication he had requested. 

The two then freed two other teenagers and escaped.

 Cuello was sentenced last year to one to six years in prison.

One of two people who attacked a staff member before escaping the state's Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center in Kearney more than a year ago has been imprisoned. Court records say 18-year-old Edward Gonzales was sentenced Friday to five to 10 years in prison for the escape assault and other crimes last year. A former Indian Health Service pediatrician has been sentenced for sexually abusing Native American children while on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. 

Seventy-one-year-old Stanley Patrick Weber of Spearfish was sentenced Monday in federal court to five consecutive life sentences for five aggravated sexual abuse charges. 

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Weber also was sentenced to 15 years on each of three counts of sexual abuse of a minor.

 Weber was sentenced last year to 18 years in prison for similar crimes against boys on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana. 

Weber also was ordered to pay $800,000 in fines.

GRETNA, Neb. (AP) - A driver was fatally injured and his passenger hospitalized after a collision on Interstate 80 in eastern Nebraska's Sarpy County.

The crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. Sunday near the Highway 370 westbound entrance ramp, east of Gretna.

An investigation indicates a car driven by Kenisha Prentice, 25, of Omaha, hit the rear of a car driving by Nabil Shokai, 67, of Lincoln.

Shokai was pronounced dead at a hospital, the sheriff's office said. A passenger, Kalul Bor, 74, was in critical condition.

Prentice and three passengers in her car were treated for minor injuries.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Nearly 200 evacuees prepared Tuesday to end their two-week quarantine at a Southern California military base where they have been living since flying out of China during a deadly viral outbreak.

None of those who flew into March Air Reserve Base have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, health authorities said, although one evacuee at another base had been found to have the highly infectious virus and was in hospital isolation.

The group, which includes children, arrived from China Jan. 29, taking chartered flights from Wuhan. The locked-down city of 11 million is the epicenter of the virus that has claimed more than 1,000 lives overseas.

In the United States, there have been only 13 confirmed cases, including seven in California, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health officials.

But fear of the disease has led to "unacceptable" treatment of others who work at the March airbase, Dr. Cameron Kaiser, public health officer for Riverside County, said in an open letter to the community on Monday.

The evacuees, which include U.S. State Department workers or their families, were isolated from base personnel and weren't permitted to leave a fenced quarantine area, Kaiser said.

"People on and off the base are not at increased risk for exposure," Kaiser said.

"There have been comments made that have been hurtful - both in person and on social media - that are often based on incorrect or incomplete information," Kaiser said. "A few base workers have even been accosted in uniform. This is not acceptable, and needs to stop."

Hundreds of evacuees in the past two weeks were flown to military bases in California, Texas and Nebraska, where many are still quarantined. With one exception, none have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, health authorities said.

The exception was an evacuee who flew into Marine Air Station Miramar in San Diego last week.

The adult and three other evacuees had been in hospital isolation after showing symptoms of the virus but on Sunday, federal health officials said they had tested negative and they were sent back to the base, where they joined more than 200 people who are under a 14-day quarantine.

On Monday morning, however, CDC officials informed county health officials that "further testing revealed that one of the four patients tested positive" for novel coronavirus and that person was returned to hospital isolation, UC San Diego Health said in a statement.

Another evacuee from Miramar also was hospitalized for evaluation Monday afternoon, UC San Diego Health said in a statement.

"Both patients are doing well and have minimal symptoms," the statement said.

Five evacuees taken to Travis Air Force Base, located between San Francisco and Sacramento, were hospitalized after showing symptoms of the virus but none of those possible cases has been confirmed, authorities said.

No symptoms were reported among evacuees at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio or a Nebraska National Guard training base in Omaha.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A statue of renowned Nebraska novelist Willa Cather is slated to replace a statue of the politician and Arbor Day founder J. Sterling Morton at the U.S. Capitol.

The 9-foot, 5,500-pound Morton statue will get a new home in Nebraska City as early as this fall after sitting on display in the nation’s capital for more than 80 years,&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/state-and-regional/nebraska/after-years-in-washington-j-sterling-morton-will-come-home/article_a7ebfb07-3d55-5a52-b45e-eeec2a5f89f9.html#tracking-source=home-top-story-1" target="_blank">according to the Lincoln Journal Star</a>.

Two years ago, state senators voted to replace Morton and William Jennings Bryan as Nebraska’s longtime representatives at the Capitol’s National Statutory Hall. Cather and Ponca Indian Chief Standing Bear were selected to fill those spots.

Morton, an Illinois native, moved to Nebraska City in 1854 and became a farmer, editor and member of the territorial legislature. He served as territorial secretary and, later, secretary of agriculture for President Grover Cleveland.

He became a household name in Nebraska for launching Arbor Day in 1872. Nebraskans planted an estimated 1 million trees that first year.

The Cather statue should be done this summer. It could be next year before her statue replaces Morton’s.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A 49-year-old man is suspected of beating to death Lincoln man who'd been dating the same woman.

Lincoln police arrested the man Sunday on suspicion of manslaughter. Court records don't yet show that he's been formally charged.

He's suspected of killing Jonathan Olson, 44, last fall. Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister said Olson and the man had been in relationships with the same woman and that Olson had gone to the man's home Oct. 11 to retrieve personal property. The man assaulted Olson that day, witnesses said.

Dolores Perez, 18,&nbsp; walked into a law enforcement agency Sunday after learning she had been reported as a missing person. Authorities did not report where she reported to law enforcement.&nbsp; Officials originally indicated she might be in Nebraska.

On February 6, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation asked for the public's help to locate her.&nbsp; Perez’s family reported her missing, and she was last seen with Juan Carlos Gonzalez on Jan. 22.

On January 30, the Ford County Sheriff's office issued an attempt to locate for 22-year-old Gonzales in connection with an&nbsp;alleged rape and aggravated kidnapping.

On February 6, Gonzalez turned himself in to authorities in Grand Island, Nebraska, according Carr. Gonzalez will be transported back to Ford County once extradition is complete.

All the bridges damaged during last spring's massive flooding in Nebraska have now been reopened.

 The Nebraska Department of Transportation said the Nebraska 13 bridge near Hadar in northeast Nebraska reopened Friday. 

The bridge about four miles north of Norfolk was the final one of 27 bridges damaged during last spring's flooding to reopen. 

The flooding last March caused the closure of 3,300 miles of highway in Nebraska. 

All of the highways affected by the flooding have been reopened.

 The Transportation Department says it spent $2.8 million to replace the Hadar bridge.&nbsp;

FORD COUNTY, Kan. — The suspect wanted for alleged rape and aggravated kidnapping in Kansas is in custody.

On January 30, the Ford County Sheriff's office issued an attempt to locate for 22-year-old Juan Carlos Gonzales.&nbsp;

Late Thursday, Gonzalez turned himself in to authorities in Grand Island, Nebraska, according to Ford County Sheriff Bill Carr. Gonzales will be transported back to Ford County once extradition is complete.

Gonzalez was believed to be traveling with 18-year-old Dolores Perez. She is still missing.

Nebraska weighs proposal for major medical facility project

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) - Authorities on Thursday arrested a driver involved in a December crash south of Bellevue that killed two people.

The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that Joshua Martinez, 27, of Plattsmouth, was arrested Thursday on warrants charging him with several counts, including vehicular homicide and driving on a suspended license. Gabrielle Ramirez, 19, and Beau Dasher, 20, both of Plattsmouth, were passengers in Ramirez's car and died at the scene of the Dec. 15 crash on Highway 75 beneath the Highway 34 bridge.

A car driven by Martinez crossed through the highway median in icy conditions and collided with a pickup truck, investigators said. The driver and a front-seat passenger of the pickup, both from Council Bluffs, Iowa, were seriously injured, as was Martinez. A 1-year-old child secured in a child seat in the pickup wasn't injured.

Gabrielle Ramirez, 19, and Beau Dasher, 20, both of Plattsmouth, were passengers in Ramirez's car and died at the scene of the Dec. 15 crash on Highway 75 beneath the Highway 34 bridge.A car driven by Martinez crossed through the highway median in icy conditions and collided with a pickup truck, investigators said. The driver and a front-seat passenger of the pickup, both from Council Bluffs, Iowa, were seriously injured, as was Martinez. A 1-year-old child secured in a child seat in the pickup wasn't injured.

LINCOLN – Hudson Lake in Cherry County has reopened to ice-fishing.

Hudson Lake, which is about 24 miles southwest of Valentine, is available for public recreation through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s Open Fields and Waters Program. 

The lake is open to ice-fishing until March 1, 2020.

Hudson Lake had been temporarily closed because of weather-related deteriorating road conditions.

The Nebraska Capitol's public wireless internet has been turned off temporarily after a “critical security breach." 

Sen. Mike Hilgers, chairman of the Legislature's Executive Board, says the Wi-Fi was shut down to protect the state's network and the private information held by state lawmakers and other state officials. 

Hilgers says state officials don't know who caused the breach and were still investigating. He says the internet service will return as soon as it's safe. 

His comments came after several lawmakers complained that they had lost access to the public internet they use to conduct personal business while on the legislative floor.

A South Dakota House committee on Thursday unanimously approved a bill to allow industrial hemp in South Dakota. 

The proposal would legalize and regulate the growth, processing and transportation of hemp in the state. 

The bill's advancement to the House floor marked progress on an issue that was the subject of a split between legislators and Gov. Kristi Noem last year. 

Noem has said she still doesn't think that industrial hemp is a “good idea," but her office worked with legislators to craft the bill this year. She wants the hemp program to be regulated by “four guardrails” that would provide for the program's enforcement, regulation, transportation permitting, and funding.
