PUEBLO, Colo. -- September 4, 2021 -- The Chadron State College volleyball team closed out the season opener on Saturday at the Steel City Showcase in Pueblo, Colo. with a 3-0 win over Fort Hays State and 2-3 loss to Rollins.
Against Fort Hays State, the team swept the Tigers by going 25-21, 25-17, and 25-16. With 34 kills and only 12 errors in the match, the team had an overall hit percentage of .237 compared to Fort Hays' .077.
The Eagles traded blows with the Tars in the evening match, winning the first and third sets of the match. After Rollins tied it up at 2-2 with a 25-22 win in the fourth set, the game went to a fifth set in which the Tars won 15-8 over the Eagles.
Junior middle hitter Micaiah Vrbka showed up big in both matches on Saturday. Against Fort Hays, she led the team in kills with eight, hitting percentage with .500, and blocks with seven. She finished with 15 kills and 13 blocks on the day.
Audrey Bennett and Devyn Volz shared setting duties, combining 64 total assists on the day. Bennett led both matches with 18 assists, while Volz produced 11 against Fort Hays and 17 against Rollins.
Defensive leader Rylee Greiman earned 31 total digs on the day. She led the team with 15 against Fort Hays and 16 against Rollins.
CSC will travel to Kearney, Neb. to participate in the Rosella Meier UNK Fall Classic next weekend. They will face Nebraska-Kearney, West Texas A&M, Southern Nazarene, and Minot State.
