WAHOO, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man was fatally injured when he was knocked off the top of a viaduct in eastern Nebraska.

Saunders County Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz said in a news release Friday that several vehicles were involved in pileup around 6:20 p.m. Thursday on the U.S. Highway 77 viaduct on the west side of Wahoo.

The release says one man had left his vehicle to check on another driver when a northbound semitrailer went out of control on the icy pavement and struck the viaduct.

The man who was knocked off it was taken to Saunders Medical Center in Wahoo and then to a Lincoln hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His name hasn’t been released.

The sheriff says no other injuries were reported by people in the other vehicles.

Two inmates get more time for assault on prison captain

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two inmates who assaulted a prison captain at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln have been given more time behind bars.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that 24-year-old Ary Soto was sentenced Monday and 29-year-old Evan Swenson was sentenced last week.

Prosecutors say the two inmates were armed Oct. 5, 2016, with padlocks attached to cotton belts that they could swing as weapons. They came up behind some investigators and then focused on the captain, battering his head and hands. He suffered a concussion, cuts and a fractured hand.

Court records say Soto pleaded no contest and was given 10 to 16 years. He’s already serving time for second-degree murder in Douglas County. The records say Swenson also pleaded no contest and was given eight to 16 years. He’s serving time for attempted murder in Buffalo County.
