Prescribed fire workshops scheduled in January

LINCOLN, Neb. – A series of workshops across the state will provide information for completing safe and effective prescribed fires.

These workshops are for landowners, resource professionals, volunteer fire departments and others interested in burning. No experience is required.

Workshops, scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m., will be held Jan. 15 at the Red Cloud Community Center, Jan. 16 at Lincoln’s Lancaster County University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, Jan. 17 at Thedford’s Upper Loup Natural Resources District (NRD), Jan. 21 at Scottsbluff’s North Platte NRD, and Jan. 23 at Norfolk’s Northeast Community College Lifelong Learning Center.

City of Alliance takes over 'Pillars For The Park', Clerk Jines to retire

At Tuesday night's Alliance City Council meeting, the Council addressed a series of resolutions regarding the Pillars For The Park project, which will replace the pillars and sunken garden in Alliance Central Park. 

The first resolution transferred funds raised by the Pillars committee to City management. 

Alliance City Manager Jeff Sprock said that these funds will be locked in for use only in the sunken garden project. 

The second resolution authorize submittal of a letter of intent to apply for a Nebraska Department of Economic Development Civic and Community Center Financing Fund to assist with the project. 

The third resolution authorizes entering into a contract with a professional grant writer to submit the grant application. 

Sprock said that although the Pillars for the Park group is finished with their fundraising efforts, they will continue to play a role in the future of the sunken garden project.

In other council news on Jan. 7:

-Council authorized the budgeted purcahse of a Turf Vac with two attachments from Swanston Equipment of Fargo, ND in the amount of $25,141.  

-Council revised an earlier approved purchase of a new police vehicle utilizing the state contract; when council planned to make the purchase the price from the original bid winner had gone up.  The vehicle, a 2020 Ford F-150 Crew Cab, has now been purchased from the new low bid, Cover-Jones Motor Company, for $34,558.

-Alliance City Clerk Linda Jines informed the council of her intention to retire in March after over 40 years of service.  Council accepted Jines' resignation and will move forward in the discussion of selecting a new City Clerk.
