Posted Feb 12, 2020 6:09 PM

Forecasters have posted a blizzard warning for the eastern Dakotas and western Minnesota as snow, strong winds and plunging temperatures move in.

The storm is creating difficult travel conditions early Wednesday with a large number of schools canceling classes, including North Dakota State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation said Interstate 29 is closed in both directions from the Canadian border to the state line of South Dakota.

Meteorologists expected wind gusts to 50 mph and whiteout conditions, especially in open, rural areas.

Snow accumulations will be low, at 1 to 2 inches expected.

Man originally charged with murder gets 38-40 years
Deante Mullen

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) - A Hastings man initially charged with murder has been given 38 to 40 years in prison.

Adams County District Court records say 21-year-old Deante Mullen was sentenced Tuesday. He'd pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and being an accessory to a felony after prosecutors dropped the murder charge. The judge credited Mullen with 777 days already served.

Prosecutors have said Mullen and another man, Daniel Harden, tried to rob Jose Hansen on Sept. 11, 2017, and Hansen was shot in the back. Harden was acquitted of murder and weapons charges but convicted of robbery conspiracy. He was sentenced in January to 40 to 44 years.

Mullen testified against Harden, as did Katherine Creigh, who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor obstruction of government operations. She was sentenced to a year.
