Augustana cruises by Eagles Sunday, 71-33
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – November 27, 2022 – The Chadron State College women's basketball team, for the second consecutive night, ran out to a significant lead early. However, the Eagles couldn't hang onto their advantage until halftime, taking a non-conference loss on Sunday afternoon at the Augustana University Vikings in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, by a score of 71-33.
Augustana didn't get on the board until 5:38, as Chadron State opened up with a 10-0 lead. The Vikings' first points came on a three-point play by Jennifer Aadland. That started a 12-0 run for the home team. CSC's Ashayla Powers took the lead back for her team by sinking a three with 10 seconds left in the first period.
The Vikings took back the lead for good in the second. A layup by Powers at 8:08 gave her team its last lead, at 16-15, but CSC only managed one other bucket in the half, as AU took a 27-17 halftime lead.
CSC had a scoring drought in the second half. It ended a nine-minute scoreless streak at four minutes left in the third quarter, and in the fourth it got its last points at 7:16 remaining. Meanwhile AU shot 18-of-30 in the final 20 minutes.
Foul shots were barely a factor in the game. CSC fouled only eight times, with three shooting fouls, while AU fouled 13 times and only one was on a field goal try. Both teams reached the double bonus in the first period, however the only time it happened again was when the Vikings committed their last penalty in the game, with 5:16 remaining.
Shooting made up the biggest difference on Sunday afternoon. The Vikings hit 29 of their 66 shots, while the Eagles went 14-of-59. AU also had five more three-pointers.
The Eagles had a one-rebound advantage on the offensive glass, however the Vikings took the defensive category by eight to finish with a 43-36 lead overall.
Augustana was led by Aadland, with 16 points, seven rebounds, and Aislin Duffy, with 10 points, nine boards, and five assists.
Chadron State got 10 points, three caroms from Powers, while Kadyn Comer led the team with seven rebounds.
The Vikings improved to 8-0 with the win. They are 1-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Eagles fell to 0-6 overall. Conference play begins Friday, December 2, against CSU-Pueblo in the Chicoine Center in Chadron. New Mexico Highlands visits on Saturday.
Comer's career night not enough in Eagles loss to NAIA school Northwestern
ORANGE CITY, Iowa – November 26, 2022 -- Despite a 42-37 rebounding advantage in the game, the Chadron State College women's basketball team lost a non-conference road game in Orange City on Saturday to the Northwestern College Red Raiders, by a score of 88-59.
The Raiders improve to 8-0 on the season, while CSC is now 0-5.
"We just weren't disciplined at either end of the court tonight," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Janet Raymer. We must get better at execution, in order to compete going forward."
Northwestern won the turnover battle, committing only 10 to CSC's 17.
The Raiders scored the first bucket in the game, but the Eagles scored the next eight, to go up 8-2 at 6:45 in the first. Northwestern battled back, however to tie it at 8-8. The two teams battle back and forth for the remainder of the period, and the Raiders led 21-20 after 10 minutes.
After keeping it close for the opening minute of the second frame, Northwestern went on a 12-2 run to go up 38-26. From there, the Eagles' deficit remained in the low double-digits for the remainder of the half, until the Raiders led 50-35 at halftime.
Northwestern stretched its lead to 25 at the end of three quarters. The Raiders' Hannah Narem hit her first four field goals, on the way to an 8-for-10 night and a game-high 16 points, while CSC missed its first three. The hosts won the shooting percentage battle in that period 42.1 percent to 18.8 percent.
The fourth frame went similarly, with the Eagles limiting turnovers to only two.
Maddie Jones and Emilee Danner added 14 points each for the Raiders. Molly Schany was the game's leading rebounder. Jones also dished out eight assists.
Kadyn Comer had a team-high 15 points for the Eagles, hitting five of her eight field goals and missing only one of six free throws. Ashayla Powers contributed 14 points and a team-high eight boards.
CSC remains on the road Sunday, in its final non-conference game. The Eagles visit Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for a Noon MT/1 p.m. CT tipoff.
