The high school basketball season is barely over, but, as usual, the track and field season will open Saturday (March 18) when Chadron State College hosts its annual High School Indoor Meet in the Nelson Physical Activity Center. The field events will begin at 9 a.m. and the running events at 11.

Meet Director Willie Hoffman said that as of noon Thursday, nearly 300 athletes from nine schools were entered.  Many of them, of course, will compete in several events.

Seven western Nebraska schools—Alliance, Bayard, Chadron, Cody-Kilgore, Creek Valley at Chappell, Gering and Scottsbluff—are among those submitting entries, along with Custer, S.D., and Southeast High at Yoder, Wyo.

This will be the 36th year that at least one indoor meet for high school athletes has taken place in the Nelson Center since it opened in 1987.  An exception was in 2000, when COVID 19 caused nearly all of the spring and many summer athletic events to be cancelled.

The meet will be open to the public.
