OKLAHOMA CITY – February 21, 2021 – Chadron State College pitcher Peyton Propp gave up only five hits over seven and one-third innings on Saturday, but the Eagles softball team came away with a disappointing 0-2 record to begin the season in Oklahoma.
In a morning game at Bouse Sports Complex in Choctaw, Pittsburg State University, designated the home team, did all its work on offense in the third inning.
PSU's Kylee Bohle tripled with one out, and with two down, the Gorillas had runners on the corners after Makenzie Goswick advanced on a hit-by-pitch. Audrey Miller laced a homer to left field to score the trio.
Two more runs reached, unearned, on a double by Paxtyn Hayes and a pair of fielding errors which plater her and teammate Keelah Griffith to make the game 5-0, which was also the final score.
The Eagles nearly answered in the top of the fourth. They left two in scoring position after Sloane Quijas broke the CSC hitting drought with a single. With a couple of errors by Pittsburg, Quijas found third and Allie Mason made it to second.
A strikeout thrown by PSU's Taylor Compton, who finished with nine in six innings in her win, ended the Eagles' hopes of a rally. Compton improved to 1-0.
Propp's 10 punchouts doubled her previous career-high of five in the loss, while allowing only four base hits. She is now 0-1 on the season.
In the afternoon game, the Eagles moved to Tom Heath Field at Oklahoma Christian University, to play the AFCA 12th-ranked hosts, also dubbed Eagles.
CSC once again faced woes at the plate, while OC slapped out 13 hits for a 12-run lead by the third inning, leading to a five-inning abbreviated game at 12-0.
Starting pitcher Tia Kohl (0-1) was pelted with five hits in the first inning, and CSC committed both of its two fielding errors in that same frame, as OC got out to a 5-0 start.
Addison Spears and Bailey Rominger both singled in the second and third innings, respectively, but got little in the way of backup offensively.
The home team did the rest of its scoring in the third. Oklahoma Christian, collectively, hit for the cycle with four singles, two doubles, a triple, and a home run in the same inning. The hosts also received one base on balls.
Propp entered in the third and struck out one batter in the fourth before the run rule was invoked.
Winning pitcher Lindsay Stoeckel (1-0) left after three innings, when the decision criteria was well met.
Chadron State is set to play two more games on Monday in Oklahoma, both at Broncho Softball Stadium at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. It faces Cameron University at 9 a.m. MT / 10 a.m. CT, and finishes up against UCO just afterwards.
