GRANT COUNTY, Neb. — Officials now confirm two separate wildfires are burning in Grant County after initial reports grouped the incidents together.
According to updated information, the fires near Ashby and Hyannis are distinct events, both contributing to the ongoing wildfire situation in the Sandhills.
The Ashby Fire has been mapped at 58,935 acres based on perimeter data from the National Interagency Fire Center.
A second fire, identified as the Minor Fire near Hyannis, has been mapped at 23,668 acres, also according to National Interagency Fire Center perimeter data.
Earlier reports had combined the fires under a single incident, but updated mapping clarifies they are separate burns occurring in the same region.
Evacuations had been ordered in both the Hyannis and Ashby areas as crews continue working to contain the fires. Hyannis High School has been used as a refuge site for displaced residents.
Fire officials continue to monitor both incidents as dry conditions and Red Flag Warnings create an elevated risk for fire growth and spread.
