LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen signed proclamations that ballot measures 437 and 438, legalizing the possession of cannabis for medical purposes and the establishing of a commission to regulate its uses, were successful in the November 2024 election. With his signature, these initiatives have officially become Nebraska law. Nebraska has now joined almost every other state that allows for the use of cannabis or its derivatives for medical purposes.

Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana (NMM) Campaign Manager Crista Eggers released the following statement:

“Over a decade ago, a brave and determined group of patients and caregivers began fighting for medical cannabis access in our state. They shared their stories and poured their hearts into educating others about the life-changing potential of medical cannabis. This fight is not just about access to a plant - it’s about hope, dignity, and the belief that no one should suffer needlessly when relief is possible.”

“Today, their unwavering courage has been rewarded. With the signing of these proclamations certifying ballot measures 437 and 438, Nebraska has taken a monumental step forward. This is more than just a policy change - it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and compassion. For the countless patients who have waited, fought, and dreamed of this day, Nebraska is closer to offering the help and healing they deserve.”

“However, the journey isn’t over. While these measures are now law, patients must wait for the newly established regulatory commission to draft and implement the rules governing medical cannabis use. For many, this delay will feel agonizing. But today’s victory is a reminder that progress is possible - and that the dream of accessible relief and healing for Nebraskans is closer than ever to becoming a reality.”
