At approximately 10:00 pm on September 14 th , officers were dispatched to 2652 Marvin Circle for a reported assault. On arrival, George Coulton King was found with multiple stab wounds to his arms and neck. After interviewing the victim, police learned that the assault had occurred at 113 Yellowstone&nbsp;during an argument with his child’s mother, Valerie Cerny F/W DOB 5/26/00. 

Upon being interviewed by officers, Ms. Cerny admitted that she had stabbed Mr. King repeatedly during an argument which became heated and that her intent was to kill him. 

Ms. Cerny is currently housed in the Box Butte County Jail pending a hearing on domestic related attempted 1 st Degree Homicide.

CHADRON – Omar Ali is Chadron State College’s September Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month.

Ali is a junior from Las Vegas who is majoring in psychology with a minor in business information systems.

“I am interested in understanding why and how people feel and do the things they do,” Ali said.

When not in class, Ali enjoys spending time outdoors, baking, exploring fashion, and participating in adventures.

Ali is a member of the football team and attends CSC on a scholarship. He is also involved in Project Strive/TRiO, Art Guild, Emerging Eagles, and the International Club, and is vice president of the Social Work and Psychology Club (SWAP).

Jennifer Schaer, Director of Project Strive, said Ali is an outstanding student and leader.

“<a>He will jump at any and all opportunities to volunteer in the classroom and in the community.</a>&nbsp;Omar attends Project Strive events and encourages others to attend events with him. He looks for ways to better himself and those around him. Mr. Ali is going to go a long way in life, and I am glad that Project Strive has been a part of his journey,” Schaer said.

While attending CSC, Ali said he has enjoyed taking Intro to Graphic Design, Decision Support for Managers, and Industrial Organizational Psychology classes.

Professor and Art Department Chair Mary Donahue said she enjoyed working with Ali in Intro to Graphic Design.

“He was engaged in the class, interested in discussing ideas, and his design projects were highly creative. He always went above and beyond with his assignments and showed himself to be a dedicated student and quiet leader by setting an excellent example for other students,” Donahue said.

Ali said he is invested in the areas of study he is pursuing because human interaction is the gateway to all pathways, making both psychology and business important aspects of society.

Ali is considering attending graduate school for psychology or pursuing a career in marketing after graduation from CSC.

The Buck Stops Here Trophy Contest 

At approximately 11:10 am on 9/15/24, officers were dispatched to 416 Errebo Place on a disturbance call. Upon arrival, Gregory L. Buethe M/W DOB 06/23/87 was cursing, screaming, and refused to talk to officers. The suspects mother told police that Mr. Buethe is off his meds and has a history of mental illness. Today, he broke a window in the home and assaulted his mother by throwing a table at her, causing a knee injury.

 Officers attempted to interview Mr. Buethe, however despite efforts to deescalate the situation, he became more agitated and violent toward officers. Mr. Buethe picked up a large piece of wood and threw it at Sergeant David LaDuke, causing a fracture to his leg. 

At that time, officers deployed a Taser to attempt to gain control of the suspect. The Taser had minimal effect, and the suspect retreated into the home. Additional officers were summoned to the scene and surrounded the house. 

After interviewing the suspect’s mother and brother, it was determined that there were no guns in the home and no reason to believe the suspect was armed. Once sufficient manpower was on the scene, officers made entry into the home and took the suspect into custody. 

Although no additional force was used to take the suspect into custody, Sergeant Tim Peterson was assaulted during the arrest when the suspect struck him in the groin. 

The suspect was transported to the Box Butte County Jail and will face multiple charges including assault on his mother as well as the officers and resisting arrest. 

Sergeant LaDuke was transported to Box Butte General Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. The suspect’s mother was also transported to Box Butte County General for her injury.

Chadron, NE – September 13, 2024 – Chadron Middle School administration, District administration, and local authorities are addressing an incident this week. Our top priorities are the safety and well-being of our students and staff, and we are taking all necessary steps to manage the situation effectively.

Last night we were made aware of a situation involving two students. The incident was quickly looked into and local law enforcement was informed.

 Immediate Response: School staff acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all students and staff. Local law enforcement and emergency services were promptly notified.

 Safety Measures: We are working closely with law enforcement to understand the circumstances and to ensure that all necessary measures are in place.

Coordinated Police Response Leads to Apprehension of Three Burglary Suspects 

At 12:51 am on September 13, 2024, a passing taxi driver reported a burglary in progress at The Mission Store, 203 Box Butte Ave.   The caller reported seeing the south entrance door broken and one person entering the building in a black hoodie.  Officers arrived on the scene within two minutes and noted piles of clothes and jewelry scattered on the floor. 

While APD officers searched the building for suspects, Trooper Michael Nutsch, who heard the burglary call, canvassed the area.  Trooper Nutsch located three suspects nearby in the parking lot of the Alliance Grocery Cart.  All three suspects were in possession of items taken in the burglary, and in fact there was a trail of items that led from the Mission Store to where the suspects were located.   

Andrew Flye M/I DOB 3/25/1993, Julian Poor Bear M/I 2/1/91 and Jacob Zier M/W DOB 9/3/91 were all booked on felony charges including burglary, criminal mischief, and possession of stolen property.  

Thanks to a rapid response and coordinated efforts between the Alliance Police Department and the Nebraska State Patrol all property was returned to the Mission Store and the suspects will be held accountable for their actions.

APD: Coordinated Police Response Leads to Apprehension of 3 Burglary Suspects

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol is urging Nebraskans to exercise caution when communicating online. In the past several weeks, NSP has received multiple reports of scammers impersonating State of Nebraska officials. One victim has reported losing $5,000 in crypto currency because of the scam.

The fraudulent scheme typically originates with a look-alike social media profile for a government official. When the scammers establish communication with a victim, the malicious actors typically move the victim to a different communication platform, such as a messaging application. The scammer then attempts to convince the victim of an authentic and secretive agreement by initiating conversations that appear to be with the state official.

The reported fraudulent schemes have promised a variety of perks, such as:

-Secretive financial grants totaling $500,000+, requiring a downpayment to receive-Financial transactions approved by government officials-Secretive job offers

The State of Nebraska does not use social media sites or messaging applications to exchange sensitive financial or potential employment information with individuals. Anyone interested in seeking financial resources or employment should contact the respective government entity by using the contact information provided on&nbsp;<a href="http://www.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">www.nebraska.gov</a>.

Anyone who has been contacted, or is still in contact with a malicious actor claiming to provide a

variety of the perks mentioned above, should immediately cease communication with the malicious actor. Never provide financial resources or financial information to malicious actors.&nbsp; If financial information has been provided, immediately contact your financial institution and ensure your accounts are secure.

NSP warns of social media scammers posing as Government Officials

Gering, Neb. - The (1-1) Alliance Bulldogs will hit the road for the second straight week as they will travel 53 minutes to Gering to take on the (2-0) Gering Bulldogs.&nbsp;Pregame coverage is set to begin at 6:30pm with kickoff set for 7:00pm. Listen to the contest on KCOW radio.&nbsp;

The Bulldogs are coming off 43-15 loss to a tough Holdrege Dusters team. Alliance rushed for 157 yards and tacked on 120 yards through the air. Leading the rushing attack was sophomore Trini Trejo with 100 yards and junior quarterback Jett Herian threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns. The top receiver was junior Espn Lanik with 6 receptions for 68 yards while freshman Caysen Robertson caught two passes for 40 yards and one touchdown and junior Carson Swenson caught a 12-yard pass in the endzone.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Defensively, junior Cole Stoike had a team high 15 tackles, Robertson finished with 14 and one tackle for loss. Eladio Campos had 6 tackles. Lanik would also record an interception while playing defense in Friday's contest against the Dusters.&nbsp;

Gering is 2-0 for the first time since 2012 and defeated Mitchell 40-26. Four different ball carriers would rush for a combined 300 yards and five touchdowns. Leading the rush attack was Junior Rece Knight who finished with 145 yards and three touchdowns. Knight would also throw for 125 yards. Junior Bo Gable finished with 92 yards on the ground.&nbsp;

Through the air, Knight's top target was senior Barron Williams who recorded five catches for 82 yards. Gable would finish the game with 26 receiving yards.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gable led the defense with 15 tackles in the contest. Junior Tyler Fry and senior Creighton Beals recorded 13 tackles and Williams finished with 12.&nbsp;&nbsp;

These two Bulldog teams last met in 2020 where Gering was victorious 30-7. Since 2004, these teams have met 18 times where Alliance holds an 11-7 record.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Compliments and complaints. Praise and skepticism. Difficult to tell what will land on your plate before reaching the workplace.This past week a number of people stopping by the Keep Alliance Beautiful Recycling Center thanked our staff for their efforts day-in and day-out. On the other hand, I was reminded of all the people who maintain “nothing is really recycled”. Sure, more still ends up in the landfill than as new products/materials to purchase. Anyone with a notion to buy recycled or environmentally friendly products will be pleasantly surprised, however, at their availability.

A water bottle touting “made with 100 percent recycled plastic” is one thing. The person who quenches their thirst may toss it in the trash can and its potential ends there. Plastic is playing a greater role in industries where the buyer likely has years in mind. A prime example – furniture. Before, plastic, wood, metal and fabric were, and still are, major building materials for furniture.

Plastic’s presence has grown since the 1950s in home decor with consumers now seeking recycled options. Worldwide, plastic furniture sales were estimated at $15.05 billion in 2023 and forecast to jump to $26.7 billion by the end of 2033, according to Fact.MR. It did not specify how much of those products were made with at least some recycled plastic. Plastic is still a small market share of the industry that weighed in at $677.09 billion in 2022 according to Grand View Research (GVR). An article on their website expects sales to post a 5.9 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) 2023-2030 overall compared to 7 percent for plastic – the highest category.

As a matter of full disclosure, my family’s preference when promoting sustainability is to find a quality, used piece such as a table. If plastic does win us over next time, it should be recycled. Style and quality has come a long way from the faded patio chairs patrons bring by the recycling center. A top ten list of companies relying on used No. 2 plastic, etc. is easy to find. Yet, IKEA’s commitment caught my eye. Known for its “assemble yourself” philosophy, IKEA is headquartered in Sweden where recycling is mandatory. According to its website, IKEA will use only recycled polyester (instead of virgin) “bringing us one step closer to one of our ambitions, using only renewable or recycled materials by 2030”. By the end of 2020 the move resulted in 130,000 metric tons of virgin polyester (mostly PET bottles) recycled, saving 200,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emitted.

Sources for the plastic comply with the Global Recycling Standard. The broader industry already touts greener efforts such as no toxic/carcinogenic chemicals during manufacturing and Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood, proving the raw material, still used in 40 percent of furniture (GVR) comes from responsibly managed forests. Consider recycled plastic furniture as a way to close the loop and add to the character at home or in the workplace. With autumn almost here, the time may be right to replace an outdoor table or chair. Brands such as POLYWOOD, HighwoodDUROGreen offer quality HDPE (No. 2) plastic products. Also consider making your own furniture. Solutions Plastic Lumber and Decking Products from Firststar Recycling in Omaha sell dimensional lumber made with recycled plastic in Nebraska – including Hefty orange bags from KAB. When replacing a chair or another worn out piece consider the best disposal option. Wood is not recyclable though metal is at the landfill or an area salvage yard. Check the number on plastic furniture, we accept No. 1-7 as long as the furniture fits in our baler and does not require taking out other metal components, etc. If that well-loved item has some life left, take it to the Mission Store or someplace where it can find a new home.

KEARNEY, Neb. – Chadron State volleyball won its second consecutive match and earned its first sweep of the 2024 season with a decisive win over Missouri Southern, but closed out the Rosella Meier Fall Classic with a straight sets loss to hosts Nebraska Kearney, the No. 6-ranked team in the nation. 

The Eagles (2-6) rolled over Missouri Southern (0-8) by set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-23, but had no answer for the nationally-ranked Lopers (9-0), falling to UNK 25-13, 25-16, 25-13. The Lopers have yet to drop a set in their nine victories this season. 

Newcomer and junior outside hitter Alejandra Briseno had a total of 22 kills on the day and has now led the Eagles in kills in three straight matches. Briseno, a native of Mexico who previously played at Hutchison Community College in Kansas, had 15 kills and hit .310 during the win over Missouri Southern, then had seven kills while hitting .278 against Kearney. 

Senior middle Maddison Wright (six kills, .417 hitting percentage) and junior middle Bella Adams (six kills, no errors, .375 hitting percentage) also excelled against Missouri Southern. As a team, the Eagles racked up 42 kills against just eight errors against the Lions, including a first set where CSC hit .325 as a team with only one error. 

The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 start immediately in that first set, taking advantage of three MSSU attack errors plus a service ace from Avery Lacy. With an 11-7 lead, Chadron ripped off a 5-0 run with a kill from Aiyana Fujiyama followed by two kills from Briseno sandwiched around back-to-back aces from Lacy, who finished with four aces in the match. 

Chadron fell behind 6-3 early in the second set, but chipped away and took the lead with back-to-back-to-back kills from Kally Kirkwood, Wright and Rylee Ward to make it 10-9, CSC. After Missouri Southern took a narrow 14-13 lead, Chadron rattled off the next six points, featuring two kills from Bella Adams, to take control with a 19-14 lead and winning the final three points of the set to go up 2-0 in the match. 

Missouri Southern hung around and kept the third set close, but the Lions were hurt by 23 attack errors in the game, including nine apiece in each of the final two sets. Briseno punctuated the match with her 15th kill on CSC's second match point to secure a 25-23 win in set three and run Chadron State's win streak to two. 

Unfortunately, the Eagles couldn't convert that momentum into much against Nebraska Kearney, the first ranked opponent CSC has faced so far this season. The Lopers hit over .400 as a team in all three sets and hit .459 for the match. Briseno had seven kills while Kally Kirkwood and Fujiyama had six each. 

After eight matches away from Chadron, the Eagles will play in the Chicoine Center for the first time this upcoming weekend, which will also open up RMAC play. Chadron State will welcome Colorado School of Mines (3-5) on Friday night and MSU Denver (7-1) on Saturday, with both matches scheduled for 6 p.m.

🏐 Chadron State closes out UNK event with win over Missouri Southern

The Hemingford girls and the Custer boys won the team titles at the Chadron High School Cross Country Meet held Friday on Chadron State College’s challenging course.&nbsp; Both the boys and the girls ran five kilometers.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Neither of the winning teams had previously participated in the meet this decade.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Taylor Harrelson of Rapid City Christian was the girls’ individual winner and Trevor Zurn of Alliance took the boys’ gold medal.&nbsp; Both are sophomores, who finished second and third, respectively, in their races a year ago, but improved their times significantly and won top honors Friday.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Harrelson’s winning time was 21:33.94, about 74 seconds faster than her mark last year.&nbsp; Zurn completed this year’s race in 16:55.37, a minute and 53 seconds better than his time of a year ago.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Harrelson also was fourth in the Chadron race in 2022, when she was an 8th&nbsp;grader.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This year’s runner-up among the girls was Dakota Horstman, a Hemingford junior who led her team’s impressive victory.&nbsp; Her time was 22:06.49. Teammates Aurora Hinman and Ainslee Woltman were fourth and sixth, respectively, while Teagan Thompson was 14th&nbsp;to round out Hemingford’s winning quartet.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kylee Kampfe of Sidney was third in 22:34.11. That’s 75 seconds faster than her time of a year ago when she placed fifth for the first place Lady Raiders.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gordon-Rushville’s Kynsleigh Krebs and Ashlyn Denning finished fifth and seventh, respectively, and teammate Rylie Barker was 15th&nbsp;this year.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron’s leaders were Jentsyn Fuller and Lillie Uhing, who placed 11th&nbsp;and 12th&nbsp;at their home meet. Another of the Cardinals, Ave Pyle, was 17th&nbsp;among the 67 girls in the race.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gering sophomore Axton Stone was the runner-up in boys’ race Friday in 17:03.75. That’s 52 seconds faster than his winning time of a year ago. Sean Shipp of Custer, the pacesetter for the winning team, placed third in 17:16.88, almost a minute ahead of fourth place Asher Saka of Alliance.&nbsp; However, Saka’s time this year was 80 seconds faster than his mark of a year ago when he finished ninth at the Chadron meet.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hemingford’s Austin Benda was sixth in the boys’ race, followed by three Custer Wildcats, who crossed the finish line just a second and a half apart to help nab the team title.

Parker Wellnitz of Hay Springs was 10th&nbsp;this year after placing 11th&nbsp;a year ago.&nbsp; But his time was about a minute and a half faster Friday.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There were 104 boys in this year’s race, 30 more than a year ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hemingford & Custer take Chadron X-Country gold

After romping past Valentine by a 43-6 margin last Friday night, the Chadron High football team will host the Mitchell Tigers at 7 o’clock Friday night.&nbsp; It’s the Cardinals’ homecoming contest.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mitchell has been a tough opponent the past few years, winning four of the last five games versus the Cardinals. That includes last year’s 42-14 victory at Mitchell, where the Tigers out-yarded the Cards by a 458 to 128 margin.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Tigers aren’t expected to be as potent this year.&nbsp; Several of their skill position players graduated and Dez Smith, who ran for 103 yards and scored three short touchdowns against Chadron last year, transferred to Scottsbluff for his senior season.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mitchell is 1-1 after blasting Wheatland 53-6 in its opener, but losing to Gering 40-26 last Friday night.&nbsp; The Tigers and Bulldogs had not met on the gridiron the previous two years.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bolstered by excellent blocking, Chadron running back Quinn Bailey had another spectacular game at Valentine, running for 313 yards and three touchdowns besides also scoring on a pass play. That yardage is the second highest of his career, exceeded only by the 346 yards at Alliance a year ago.

🏈 Chadron aims for 3-0 start behind star rusher Bailey

Chadron's only cross country meet of the season will take place Friday (Sept. 13) on the Chadron State College course.&nbsp; Sponsored by Chadron High School, the meet is expected to once again draw many of the Panhandle’s cross country teams and individuals. A few entries from South Dakota also are anticipated.&nbsp; The action will begin at 10 a.m.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Last year’s competition among the girls was extremely tight.&nbsp; Sidney was the winner with 33 points while both Gering and Chadron had 35.&nbsp; The Bulldogs got the nod for second place because their No. 5 runner finished ahead of the Cardinals’.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Led by sophomore Axton Stone and junior Nathan Seiler, who finished first and second, respectively, Gering won last year’s boys’ title with only 14 points.&nbsp; Paced by sophomore Trevor Zurn, who was third individually, Alliance was the second-place team with 25 points.

LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team won a 3-2 thriller against No. 9 Creighton on Tuesday night, 25-19, 25-16, 31-33, 16-25, 15-10, in front of a crowd of 8,924 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.&nbsp;

Nebraska improved to 6-1 on the season while Creighton suffered its first loss to fall to 5-1.&nbsp;

The Huskers were balanced offensively with Harper Murray (16 kills), Andi Jackson (15 kills), Lindsay Krause (15 kills) and Merritt Beason (14 kills) leading the way. Murray had a double-double with her 16 kills and 14 digs, and Jackson had career highs in both kills (15) and blocks (8) while hitting .379. Krause added five blocks, and Beason hit .306. Rebekah Allick chipped in nine kills and hit .333.&nbsp;

Bergen Reilly had a career-high 57 assists to go with 13 digs, three blocks and three kills. Lexi Rodriguez put up a season-best 21 digs. Laney Choboy added 12, and Olivia Mauch had seven.&nbsp;

Nebraska had a .234 hitting percentage in the match, and Creighton hit .209.&nbsp;

Norah Sis had 24 kills and 11 digs for Creighton. Ava Martin totaled 17 kills and 17 digs.&nbsp;

Set 1: A 4-0 run put the Huskers up 8-4. Jackson had two kills and a block with Murray, who also had a kill. After Creighton got a sideout kill, Reilly dumped a kill to the floor, Jackson and Krause combined for a block, and Murray served an ace to make it 11-5 Huskers. Kills by Krause and Murray made it 13-6 NU, but Creighton scored three in a row to cut it to 13-9. A kill by Beason preceded a kill by Murray on the longest rally of the set, and NU led 17-10. Two more kills by Jackson and Murray and a block by Jackson and Krause made it 21-13 Big Red. The Bluejays pulled within 22-17, but Krause connected for a kill and Creighton hit out for set point. The Huskers won 25-19, hitting .250 and holding Creighton to .100.&nbsp;

Set 2: Creighton held a 5-3 lead when kills by Murray and Jackson tied the score. Three blocks in a row by the Big Red made it 9-7 with Reilly and Allick contributing on two of them. Allick added a kill as the Huskers pushed their advantage to 12-8. Allick and Jackson struck three straight kills, and Jackson and Murray posted a block as the Huskers went up 18-11. Creighton went on a 4-1 spurt to pull within 19-15, but Jackson posted a sideout kill and Krause tacked on another as the Huskers built the lead to 23-15 after the 4-0 run. Allick put the set away, 25-16, with her sixth kill. NU hit .333 and held the Jays to .032.&nbsp;

Set 3: Nebraska's first lead of the set came at 11-10 after Murray rolled a shot to the floor, and Krause followed with an ace. After Creighton regained the lead, Jackson, Murray and Krause posted four straight kills, and Krause and Allick combined for a block and a 20-16 lead. Nebraska led 23-21, but Sis produced back-to-back kills, and Martin added one for set point for Creighton, 24-23. Murray came up big with her ninth kill to tie the score 24-24, but Martin rolled a kill to the floor for another set point. An incredible defensive effort to keep a ball alive at the net led to another kill by Murray, and on the next rally Murray tipped a kill for match point, 26-25. Creighton turned to Martin again for a kill and a 26-26 tie, but Reilly set Krause for a 27-26 match point. A Creighton block made it 27-27, and the Huskers mishandled a Creighton serve to put the Jays back on top, 28-27. Krause stepped up once again for the Big Red with her 11th kill to tie it 28-28, and Creighton touched the net to make it 29-28 Huskers. Then Sis tied the score at 29-29 with her 16th kill, but a back-row kill from Murray earned match point No. 4 for the Big Red. The Bluejays then posted a block and got a kill from Sis to make it 31-30, but Allick answered with a kill to tie it 31-31. However, Sis and Martin recorded back-to-back kills to give Creighton the 33-31 win.&nbsp;

Set 4: Creighton bolted to a 7-3 advantage as Nebraska called timeout. Creighton led 10-5 before kills by Jackson and Murray helped get NU within 11-8. But the Jays answered with a 5-0 run to go up 16-8. Creighton won the set, 25-16, to force a set five for the third time in the history of the series. Creighton hit .306 in the set and held NU to -.024. &nbsp;

Set 5: With Reilly serving to open the set, Krause terminated a kill before Allick hammered down an overpass, and another kill by Krause made it 3-0 Huskers. A Creighton service error and a kill by Beason put NU ahead 5-1. Allick, Jackson and Reilly tallied kills to take NU to an 8-4 lead as the teams changed sides. Reilly and Murray added kills for a 10-5 lead before Creighton scored two in a row to cut it to 10-7. But Krause's 15th kill made it 11-7. A kill by Beason kept NU in front, 13-9, and Jackson terminated her 15th kill for match point, 14-9. Murray's 16th kill ended the five-set thriller, 15-10.&nbsp;

Up Next: NU hosts the Nebraska Classic this weekend at the Devaney Center. The Huskers will play No. 14 Arizona State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Wichita State on Saturday at 2 p.m.&nbsp;

No. 5 Huskers win thriller against No. 9 Creighton

WASHINGTON — The FBI is investigating a possible assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump after gunshots were fired Sunday near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where the GOP presidential nominee was playing golf.

The FBI said in a statement to States Newsroom the incident “appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump.”

A male suspect is in custody, law enforcement officials said.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Steven Cheung, the Trump campaign’s communications director, said in a statement about 20 minutes after the incident occurred just before 2 p.m. Eastern.
