Four upcoming Chadron State College basketball games will be postponed around Covid-19 concerns, and one game will tip off at a new time. The CSC women will be forced to postpone the three games scheduled for Friday with Western Colorado, Saturday with Fort Lewis and Tuesday with Black Hills State. The men's team will not face Fort Lewis as scheduled on Saturday, but is still on for its Friday evening tilt against Western Colorado and its Tuesday contest with BHSU. In addition, the men's game on Friday will be moved up to 6 p.m. to accomodate the visiting team. No dates have been set for the makeup of any of the postponements, at this time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bev Hanks of Hemingford received her COVID vaccine last week and was anxious to get it because of her age and health issues like asthma and heart problems. As a former educator, she did her homework and made an informed decision. She found out it would be the Moderna vaccine offered locally and it was long-lasting so she called to get on the list as a currently eligible population (75+).

“I feel blessed to be able to get it,” Hanks shared. “My arm hurt for a couple of days, but otherwise I have been fine and am looking forward to my follow-up dose in a few weeks.”

“When we have the opportunity to protect us from a virus that can be so deadly, we should take advantage and be proactive,” said Hanks.

Anyone that lined the halls of Hemingford High School in the late ‘70s through the ‘90s clearly remembers her as their history teacher with affectionate catchphrases like, “Tuesday @ 10” or “852 things.”

“As a former student of Hanks,” said Jessica Davies, Assistant Health Director with Panhandle Public Health District, “I’m proud to see her and other eligible populations so ready to be leaders in the area in getting their COVID vaccine. This is how we continue getting back to as close to normal life as possible.”

PPHD: Former Hemingford educator feels blessed to receive vaccine locally

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska lawmaker is proposing new coronavirus protections for meatpacking workers in a new bill. 

The proposal by Sen. Tony Vargas, of Omaha, would require meatpacking companies to provide masks and adequate space for social distancing to keep the virus from spreading. 

Companies would also have to paid sick leave for workers who test positive for the virus, separate from any other paid sick leave. 

Vargas introduced a similar measure last summer, but the bill failed to advance. 

His south Omaha district has a large number of meatpacking workers, and his father died from complications of the coronavirus last year.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus in Nebraska has continued to shrink this month. 

The state said there were 475 people being treated for COVID-19 Sunday in Nebraska hospitals. 

That is down from 517 at the start of January. 

The number of hospitalizations is less than half of the November peak, but it remains more than double where it was at the start of October. 

Nebraska reported 406 new virus cases Sunday to give the state 176,026 total cases.

Sarah Maresh, health-care access staff attorney with the group, said there are also administrative tweaks agencies can make to ensure the program, which she calls vital for the state's physical and economic wellbeing, is running as efficiently as possible. "It not only supports the health and wellbeing of Nebraskans but it also supports our workforce and health systems and economy." More than one in ten Nebraskans get health coverage through Medicaid, and 65% of participants are children. Nebraska voters approved expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act in 2018, but the program didn't officially launch until almost two years later. As of Dec. 1, some 22,000 Nebraskans were enrolled in Medicaid expansion. Maresh noted nearly 68,000 more Nebraskans are estimated to be eligible for coverage. When people don't have health coverage, Maresh observed they're less likely to get primary care, and patients with untreated conditions are more likely to turn to costly emergency-room visits. She contended Medicaid also is critical for keeping hospital doors open, especially in the state's rural areas, by compensating providers when patients can't pay for care. "When someone goes into the doctor, if they don't have health insurance, if they don't have Medicaid coverage, and they're not able to pay those bills, the provider ends up oftentimes eating those costs," Maresh warned. The state said 13,732 vaccinations were administered Tuesday, which was more than triple the previous daily high of 4,210 on Dec. 23. 

Officials have said they expect the pace of vaccine distribution to speed up over the next two weeks. 

At least 53,418 of the 108,188 doses of the vaccine the state has received have now been administered.

 The state reported 1,436 new virus cases and 11 deaths Wednesday to give the state 172,469 cases and 1,703 deaths since the pandemic began.

In December Congress approved a new stimulus package and President Trump signed it into law last week. It is a follow-up to the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security), which took effect last March.

Although it isn’t as generous as the original relief granted by Congress, there are several economic benefits or payments people will receive.

First the stimulus checks we will be receiving: $600 to single filers earning under $75,000 per year, $1,200 for joint filers earning under $150,000. The amount is reduced $5 per $100 of income above those limits. A household with children will receive an additional $600 for all dependents 16 and under.&nbsp;

If you have your federal income tax return automatically deposited into your bank account, this money may already be there. Otherwise you will receive a check or EIP card in the mail by January 15. The US Postal Service has a free app that can help you track where your&nbsp;stimulus check&nbsp;or EIP card is and when exactly it might arrive.

The new stimulus package prohibits seizing stimulus checks for any kind of debt, including child support or collections from private creditors and banks.

Unemployed people who lost their job due to COVID will be receiving an additional $300 from the federal government in addition to their state unemployment. This will last eleven weeks, until March 14. Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) will be extended 16 weeks, providing economic relief to those who wouldn't typically qualify for unemployment: self-employed workers, contractors, and gig workers.

The CARES Act gave us a tax credit on 50% of our wages up to $10,000, and that has been continued in the new stimulus bill.

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), originally designed to help small businesses affected by COVID, was funded again through the economic stimulus law. This includes money for PPP loans, for businesses in low-income communities, and for struggling live venues, movie theaters, and museums. PPP loans for small businesses must use 75% on payroll to be eligible for loan forgiveness.

The new stimulus package adds funding for schools, including a governors' relief fund, and money for public K-12 schools and for higher education. There is also some funding for child care.

Students who are paying off federal student loans received a reprieve under the CARES Act, which gave them the option to defer their loan payments without additional interest. That has been extended until April.&nbsp;

We have had an eviction moratorium since last March. The stimulus bill extends this until January 31. Next week we will look at how this moratorium works.

Finally, the new stimulus package allocates $69 billion for coronavirus testing, tracing, and treatment. This money will be used to purchase vaccines, pay for testing and contact tracing, and help fund COVID-19 treatment programs.

Here’s hoping that the new year brings recovery and prosperity, and that the need for all these programs will be reduced or eliminated in 2021.&nbsp;

There are COVID treatments proven to work, one being monoclonal antibody treatment (Bamlanivimab&nbsp;or bam). This is available at long-term care facilities and for the general population. It has been shown to have a 70% reduction in hospitalization and improved symptoms.

The infusion takes about three hours, and patients will be charged an outpatient administration fee but not charged for the medication. Improvements can be seen anywhere from one to three days after treatment. However, this does not shorten the length of time needed to stay isolated.

Ivermectin is a common drug with livestock and horses in the form of creams or oral drugs. For humans, it can be prescribed for use as an antiparasitic drug or topical cream.&nbsp;

While there are approved uses for ivermectin in people and animals, it should not be used to prevent or treat COVID.&nbsp;This can cause serious harm including facial/limb swelling, cardiac issues, neurologic adverse events, liver injury, and hospitalizations.

No medicine to treat or prevent COVID should be taken unless prescribed by your healthcare provider and acquired from legitimate sources. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) are ongoing regarding the use of ivermectin. These will determine if it works or not and is safe for people.

PPHD: Vaccine reminder for 75 and older, 213 more virus cases in the Panhandle 

As of this morning, 36,253 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to those in Phase 1A priority group, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Phase 1A includes frontline health care workers and residents and staff of long-term care facilities. First doses have been given to roughly a third of the state's health care population thus far, and continue to be targeted for hospital staff and health care workers providing direct patient care, as well as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, and those who will be vaccinating priority groups in the coming months.

Vaccinations for residents and staff of long-term care facilities began last week, with more than 100 on-site clinics held and additional outreach done by local health departments and community centers.

After shipping delays last week due to winter weather, more than 86,000 vaccine doses were received in Nebraska in the month of December. Of this supply, 63,000 doses are targeted for health care workers and 23,000 for residents and staff of long-term care facilities. In addition, the first shipment of second doses were received.

Additional vaccine shipments are scheduled to arrive this week, including 11,200 Moderna doses targeted for health care workers and 11,700 Pfizer doses designated for the federal pharmacy program to continue vaccination for residents and staff of long-term care facilities.

Planning is ongoing for future phases of the vaccination effort. Phase 1B is projected to begin later this month as supplies are made available. Phase 1B will begin with doses for those aged 75 and older, and be followed by workers in critical industries who are unable to work remotely. Vaccinations for the 75 and older population will be given via clinics led by local health departments, health care providers and pharmacies. DHHS will announce additional details in the weeks to come.

DHHS has launched a COVID-19 Vaccination dashboard to share how Nebraska's vaccination effort is progressing over time.

It provides a daily total of first and second dose vaccinations given, as well as breakdown of doses given by age, gender, race, and ethnicity. The dashboard also reports the percent of the population aged 16 and older completing COVID-19 vaccination. Thus far, COVID-19 vaccines have only been approved for use in those age 16 and older. &nbsp;

The dashboard also includes a timeline for COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Nebraska, displaying the phases and priority groups as reflected in the state's COVID-19 vaccination plan. Priority groups and timing projections remain tentative and will be adjusted as new federal recommendations are issued and as vaccine shipments are scheduled.

 </figure>As of this morning, 36,253 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to those in Phase 1A priority group, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).Phase 1A includes frontline health care workers and residents and staff of long-term care facilities. State Attorney General Doug Peterson said Nebraskans should be wary about unsolicited offers to provide the vaccine, especially if they ask for credit card numbers or other personal information. 

The COVID-19 vaccine is being provided free. 

The state said 527 people were being treated for the virus in hospitals Monday, up from 511 on Sunday., but that total has remained relatively stable over the past two weeks.

  Nebraska reported 585 new virus cases and 10 deaths Monday to give the state 169,585 cases and 1,682 deaths linked to COVID-19.

SCOTTSBLUFF ― West Nebraska Blood Center and the Regional West Laboratory Patient Service Center are moving their operations to 313 West 38th&nbsp;Street in Scottsbluff, just west of Regional West’s main campus, on Tuesday, Jan. 5.&nbsp;

After seeing donors at the Hampton Inn since November, West Nebraska Blood Center is moving to its new location to increase ease of access for donors. Walk-ins to donate blood are accepted, but appointments are preferred. West Nebraska Blood Center is open Monday through Wednesday, as well as Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For the current week’s blood drive schedule or to make an appointment, call 308-630-2477.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Regional West Laboratory Services Patient Service Center will temporarily be relocating as well, and provides blood draw and specimen drop-off services for tests ordered by a provider. Services are available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Many legislatures will start the year meeting remotely, but some Republican-controlled statehouses, from Montana to Pennsylvania, plan to hold at least part of their sessions in person, without requiring masks.

 Public health officials say that move endangers the safety of other lawmakers, staffers, lobbyists, the public and the journalists responsible for holding politicians accountable. 

The risk is more than mere speculation: An ongoing tally by The Associated Press finds that more than 230 state lawmakers across the country have contracted COVID-19, and at least seven have died.

 New data from the state's tracking portal shows that Nebraska has given 36,360 vaccinations so far out of the 94,697 doses in its possession. 

Most who have received initial doses at this point are front-line health care workers who were given first priority. 

Nebraska began vaccinating people on Dec. 15 but saw sharp drops in daily doses administered on Dec. 25 and the two following days. 

The numbers rose to roughly 3,000 per day afterward but dropped again to 1,579 on Jan. 1.
