LINCOLN, Neb. (UNL)-The University of Nebraska–Lincoln takes the health and safety of our campus community very seriously. As United States and global health officials continue to address the spread of novel coronavirus and&nbsp;COVID-19&nbsp;infection, health and emergency preparedness officials at&nbsp;UNL&nbsp;are monitoring the situation in collaboration with our university and governmental partners. The University has canceled classes from March 16-20. After spring break, beginning March 30, all spring semester classes will be taught remotely and will not be taught in-person.

The university, including our university housing units, will remain open. We encourage our students to return home if possible. For those students who are unable to go home, we will continue to support you in the residence halls.

We are also suspending all non-essential university-sponsored domestic and international travel through the end of the semester. All summer study-abroad programs through June 30 are canceled.

UNL cancels classes amid coronavirus concerns

The Crofton student testing positive could have possibly exposed people at two games played during the girl’s state high school basketball tournament in Lincoln on March 5.

Those games include the Hartington Cedar Catholic and Weeping Water match-up at Lincoln Southwest High School, as well as the Crofton and Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur game at Lincoln North Star High School.

The risk for contracting COVID-19 remains low in the Panhandle. There are no known cases at this time. We recommend that you call Panhandle Public Health District (308-262-5764) if you develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness, such as cough or difficulty breathing, and have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19 or have recently traveled to an area with ongoing spread. Public health will screen you and if medical attention is needed will make arrangements for testing. Do not go directly to the clinic or hospital. It is important that health care providers know you are coming so that proper precautions can be in place.

People can help protect themselves from COVID-19 and other respiratory infections by:

· Washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based sanitizer.

· Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

· Avoid close contact with sick people and stay home if you are sick. Social distancing has been key in reducing spread.

· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze then throw the tissue in the trash.

· Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The CDC does NOT currently recommend the general public use facemasks.

PPHD is working with state health officials to continue to take action to prevent the spread of disease and protect the health of Nebraskans, including:

· Sharing the latest guidance and information with hospitals, health care providers, first responders, and local and state labs. We have been holding weekly updates with hospitals and clinics.

· Assessing our health care system’s readiness to identify, monitor, and treat patients with coronavirus disease 2019.

· Engaging in active and ongoing communication with state and federal partners as part of the overall national response to this emerging public health threat.

· Reviewing and enhancing response plans with emergency management and partners to be ready for the detection of COVID-19 in the panhandle.

· With the state and other local health department partners, we have a system in place to track and monitor cases in an effort to immediately detect secondary cases and minimize the potential for ongoing, undetected, person-to-person transmission. There are no cases in the Panhandle.

Panhandle Public Health District continues to monitor the unfolding COVID-19 epidemic to anticipate its impact on the Panhandle. We are working as a unified command with Region 21, 22, and 23 Emergency Managers, and Scotts Bluff County Health Department on this evolving situation. The sports world is seeing dramatic change to its short-term schedule because America is trying to stop the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

Whitney Roth is a former Chadron State assistant volleyball coach and also took over as interim head coach mid-season in 2015. She gave us a unique insider's account of the situation involving the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the coronavirus' impact on her program.

Roth is the Director of Volleyball Operations at the University of Arkansas and tells us, "We already cancelled a scrimmage tomorrow (Friday) but have two in April that are still pending. All off/on campus recruiting is shut down as well. Our coaches are supposed to be out recruiting the next few weekends and they can no longer go out."

She added, "Most of the club tournaments are cancelled but we had some individual club visits that we were going to but can no longer do."

Former CSC coach gives insights into coronavirus impact on SEC's Razorbacks

Let’s add one more list to the various check-offs from the Centers 
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, employers and others on how to
 deal with COVID-19: Tools and tips for getting good information about 
dealing with the virus from sources you trust.

In times of crisis, from natural disasters to 9/11 and more, a free 
press has consistently delivered the goods, saving lives and asking the 
necessary and often inevitable challenging questions of the public 
officials on whom we depend for safety and security.

Put aside for now the blather about “fake news” — so politicized as 
to have no real meaning any longer. Discount President Trump’s claim 
that it’s the news media that’s leading the world’s stock markets into 
“yo-yo Dow” days. And pay less attention to the cable TV punditry and 
focus on the news reports from reporters with sources who appear by name
 in print, online or on TV.

The virus and its threat to our health is real. The market is down — 
and up and down — regardless of what’s causing it. Look for facts. Don’t
 be too accepting of information from any source, particularly on social
 media. Blog posts, tweets and public forums provide valued means of 
sharing individual information and experiences, as well as provide 
real-time data of how well government services are performing.

In the first such major crisis in which social media tools were more 
widely available, during 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, the then-fledgling 
online efforts by the web alternative to New Orleans’ Times-Picayune
 newspaper provided essential information on what was happening “now.” 
Even police and Coast Guard rescuers said they had monitored <a href="https://www.nola.com/" target="_blank">NOLA.com</a>, at times sending in teams to help those posting that they were in danger. NOLA.com later won a Pulitzer Prize for its efforts.

While some are upset that what they are hearing from the 
administration and what they are reading or viewing seem to differ, a 
free press response to that situation is: “So what’s new?” Nearly 100 
years ago, President Herbert Hoover’s administration first responded to 
the 1929 stock market crash by calling it a market reset or passing 
adjustment — or at worst, part of a passing recession that would soon be
 over. Understandable perhaps as an effort to stave off worse news. But 
it’s Variety’s headline a day after “Black Tuesday” — the huge,
 one-day drop in the Dow — that let Americans know what really happened:
 “Wall Street Lays an Egg!”

From the Vietnam War — with its infamous “credibility gap” between 
what journalists saw in combat and what military leaders were saying, to
 what we now know about out-of-proportion government surveillance 
programs across decades of our nation’s history, it’s a free press that 
over time gives us the facts we need.

My colleague Barbara McCormack, who oversees the 
Freedom Forum’s Newseum Education initiative, has this advice on turning
 to a free press for information and avoiding disinformation: “Break out
 of your content bubble and make sure you’re engaging with diverse 
ideas. That includes ideas you disagree with. With a nearly infinite 
supply of information at our fingertips, it can be all too easy to start
 gravitating to sources that reinforce our beliefs and make us feel 
validated, but the less likely we are to spot propaganda that is trying 
to exploit our beliefs and biases.”

Her advice: Break out of your media rut. Try this: Create a list of 
five news sources to consult on a regular basis — not necessarily every 
day, but every week or so.

The CDC has its basic instructions on handwashing. Here’s something 
similar for getting good information you can use about COVID-19:

McCormack’s advice: “It’s OK for your sources to display a bias in 
their coverage, but make sure that all five are real, fact-based news 
and opinion organizations. If you’re not sure, you can use a resource 
like the Freedom Forum’s <a href="https://www.freedomforuminstitute.org/first-amendment-center/newstrition/" target="_blank">Newstrition</a>® or the website <a href="https://www.allsides.com/unbiased-balanced-news" target="_blank">AllSides</a>
 to evaluate your sources. Check them on a regular basis to help you see
 the world in all its complexity, not just from a single vantage point.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Seattle Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Tampa Bay Times and others have removed paywalls for information about the virus crisis, or placed critical information outside their pay sites. USA TODAY, The Washington Post, The New York Times,
 CNN and the broadcast networks and many other major news outlets are 
offering COVID-19&nbsp; newsletters and medical tips on a daily basis.

A part of responding to any crisis is having enough good information 
on which to make decisions — whether you are making those for yourself 
or others. And in such times, throughout our nation’s history, a free 
press — if we care to use it — has been there on our behalf to obtain 
and report the facts we need.

In accordance with Wednesday's announcement from the Big Ten Conference, all University of Nebraska home sports competitions will be closed to the public effective immediately.

As of today, all Nebraska home games and competitions will take place as scheduled, but will be limited to student-athletes, coaches, essential staff and personnel, credentialed members of the media and immediate family members of the participating teams.

Further discussion on the status of the Red-White spring football game on April 18 at Memorial Stadium and Nebraska volleyball's April 25 spring match in Grand Island will occur in the coming days.

The main priority of the Big Ten Conference and University of Nebraska is to ensure the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media as we continue to monitor all relevant information on the COVID-19 virus on a daily basis.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you purchased tickets online through&nbsp;<a href="https://gofan.co/">GoFan</a>, you will be refunded by them and will receive an email when you have been refunded. This process began Wednesday afternoon, March 11.

If you purchased tickets at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pinnaclebankarena.com/">Pinnacle Bank Arena</a>&nbsp;box office, you’ll need to return the tickets there and they will refund you.

If you pre-purchased tickets through the NSAA (Coach/Administrator or General Admission, you will receive communication about the refund process at a later time.

NSAA releases ticket refund details for boys state basketball fans

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress is shutting the Capitol and all House and Senate office buildings to the public until April in reaction to the coronavirus outbreak. The House and Senate sergeants at arms said in a statement the closure will begin at 5 p.m. Eastern time Thursday. Lawmakers, aides, journalists and official visitors will be allowed into the buildings. 

The statement says officials are acting “out of concern for the health and safety" of congressional employees and the public. The officials say they're responding to the advice of District of Columbia health officials and of Congress' own doctors. For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough.

“We’re basically, in my opinion, flying blind," said Rep. Susie Lee, D-Nev. Others described the meeting as heated, testy with many lawmakers leaving flooded with graver concerns about the administration's response.

“We should be exuding confidence nationally,” said Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif. “The confusion is damaging.”

The House is expected to vote later Thursday on a multibillion-dollar aid package. It aims to provide free testing for the coronavirus, paid sick leave and strengthened unemployment insurance. CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming has identified the first case of a state resident who has the new coronavirus. 

The Wyoming Department of Health says in a statement Wednesday night that preliminary testing found a woman from Sheridan County who had recently traveled inside the United States has the virus. 

The department says it is following up to learn more details about the person’s exposure risk and to identify and communicate with anyone who may have been in close contact with the patient. 

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will conduct more tests to confirm that the woman has the virus.&nbsp;

Chadron resident tests negative for COVID-19

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Officials say five more people have tested positive for the new coronavirus in Douglas County, bringing the Nebraska total to 10. 

The Douglas County Health Department said Wednesday night that all five are close family members of an infected woman in Douglas County.

 The woman is in her 40s and recently traveled to California and Nevada. 

The department says they're all self-isolating at home.

 Also Wednesday, Nebraska school officials announced that spectators will be limited to players' immediate family members at the state boys basketball tournament. 

It gets underway Thursday at several venues in Lincoln.

5 more people test positive for COVID-19 in NE

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota officials say three more people have tested positive for COVID-19, giving the state eight so far. 

Gov. Kristi Noem announced earlier this week that one of the first five people diagnosed with the disease had died. He was a man in his 60s with underlying health problems. 

The new cases announced Wednesday were all men in the 40s to 60s. 

Two were from Minnehaha County and the third was in Bon Homme County. 

The annual St. Patrick's Day parade planned Saturday for downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has been canceled due to concerns over the new coronavirus.&nbsp;
