WESTCO has announced 15 area scholarship recipients for the 2025 WESTCO Scholarship Program, from 11 high schools within the WESTCO trade area. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship to further their education.

The scholarship committee awarded these scholarships based on criteria, which included academic performance and a written essay.&nbsp; The WESTCO Scholarship Program is one of the many ways WESTCO supports our region’s youth and we wish these recipients a successful and bright future.

Lanik has been working in education for nearly twenty years and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with an Endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education, as well as a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.&nbsp; She is currently employed with the Alliance Public Schools as an Early Childhood Special Education Teacher.

Lanik's appointment carries special significance, as she is the granddaughter of the late Bob Duryea, who dedicated nearly 30 years to the district as Business Manager, was honored as a Wall of Fame member, and played a pivotal role in establishing the very foundation Lanik now leads.

Alliance Public Schools Foundation Announces New Director

Astute visitors to the Keep Alliance Beautiful Recycling Center may have spied a few recent changes on the north and south sides of the building we share with other tenants. Granted, there is a constant flow of activity with patrons dropping off recyclables and those same materials processed and ready to ship in the alley. Along Second Street, specifically, is a yet to be labeled red horse trailer to place corrugated cardboard in – increasing capacity beyond the existing green trailer and the smaller, white horse trailer. In the alley, the west end of the former creamery has been fenced off to avoid temporarily placing any of our items on the property.

Incorporating a new (to us) trailer is always exciting though pretty straightforward: park it, train the public what to load into it and do our best to unload before it overflows. The other change is an initial step in a goal to beautify our work&nbsp;

Twine traces the general path for an envisioned art wall of recycled and repurposed materials. Our executive director, Kathy Worley, showed me a few weeks back what she had in mind from posts online. Basically, participants attach an eclectic array of recyclables to a fence also sourced from sturdy materials de jour. I can imagine, in our case, a combination of pallets and king-sized boxes from local body shops to form the underlying wall. Then . . . the sky’s the limit. The idea is to engage the public while creating an evolving canvas that brightens a setting that currently would not look out of place on the set of Sandord and Son.

No timeline has been set for erecting the wall though our goal is to have it up this spring then invite the public to contribute during scheduled events. We will need to coordinate with our neighbors before anything is official and, of course there is a chance it may not materialize. However, I want to plant the seed for all our “eco artists” out there on the assumption the KAB art wall becomes a reality.

Depending on the number of people interested, participants may each garner their own section as a fresh canvas. Though KAB is not accepting any additional paint starting this month, artists are welcome to use our extensive stock. Anything at the center is yours for the asking, yet I look forward to seeing what becomes part of the wall that has languished in junk drawers, basements, attics or other storage because “I might need it someday”.

If this idea sees a green light in the coming days, the particulars on how to add your unique touch to the wall will be forthcoming.

KAB Envisions Recycled Art Wall

Scottsbluff, Neb. — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a wanted person after a pursuit and standoff in Scotts Bluff County.

At approximately 11:15 p.m. MT Thursday, a trooper saw a Mercury Grand Marquis speeding on Lake Minatare Road, north of Scottsbluff. During the traffic stop, the driver accelerated and fled westbound on Lake Minatare Road. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The suspect turned southbound on Highway 71 and continued into Scottsbluff, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour. The driver drove through Scottsbluff on Highway 26, then turned northbound on county roads, eventually coming to a stop at a residence near Lake Minatare Road and County Road 24. The driver and passenger then fled into the home and barricaded themselves inside.

Additional troopers, as well as the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff Police Department, and Gering Police Department all responded to assist. Crisis Negotiators also responded and began attempts to communicate with the suspects. Troopers learned that there was a female inside the house as well and the suspects had access to firearms.

Communication was established and it was determined that the driver who had fled the traffic stop was preventing the passenger and the female from exiting the house. After approximately one hour, the male passenger was able to leave the house, but the driver still refused to exit or allow the female to leave.

At approximately 2:10 a.m., negotiators were successfully able to get the driver to exit the residence peacefully and he was immediately taken into custody. The female was then able to leave the home safely. Two firearms were found inside the home.

The suspect, Tyreese Monroe, 21, of Scottsbluff, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, kidnapping, and an active warrant out of Texas. He was lodged in Scotts Bluff County Jail.

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s annual day of service, The Big Event (TBE), is planned for April 26.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/thebigevent/registration/" target="_blank">Registration</a>&nbsp;is now open for volunteers and jobsites. Kaylea Geiser and McKenzie Gable say the form can be competed in five to 10 minutes. The form can be found at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.csc.edu/thebigevent/" target="_blank">www.csc.edu/thebigevent/</a>&nbsp;and questions can be directed to&nbsp;<a href="mailto:thebigevent@csc.edu" target="_blank">thebigevent@csc.edu</a>&nbsp;or 308-432-6302.

The event started in 2013 and averages about 400-450 volunteers each year. The faculty adviser is Dr. Shaunda French-Collins and the graduate assistant is Sutton Pohlman.

Typically, students and CSC employees serve at 50-60 jobsites including businesses, government and non-profit organizations, and private residences. Requested tasks usually include painting fences, raking yards, and general yard and garden cleanup.

T-shirts and sandwiches are provided for volunteers following the completion of their work at job sites.

“This will be my third year on staff and my fourth year as a volunteer, so I've been a part of The Big Event my entire time at CSC,” Geiser said. “We have a student-led staff and we've been working really hard. We do all sorts of things like going out to job sites, contacting community members, just pretty much organizing the whole thing. It's a great group of people.”

Although the volunteers cannot enter private residences or use power tools or ladders, they are happy to help in other ways.

“We try to give back to the community in any way we can,” Geiser said. “We pick up a lot of trash. Basically, if you can think of anything outside that you want done, we are the people to contact. We can help you. We welcome anybody.”

“This is my first year on The Big Event staff. I needed to find an internship for one of my scholarships, so that led me to The Big Event,” Gable said. “We're excited to get information out to everybody.”

March 28, 2025 (Lexington, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people after locating credit card skimming devices during a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

Thursday, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a trooper observed an eastbound Mercedes SUV driving with expired license plates near Lexington on I-80. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed a small amount of marijuana and credit card skimming devices. The driver, Omar Reyes Galvez, 33, of California, and passenger, Gerard Rodriguez-Montes De Oca, 34, of Nevada, were both arrested for possession of electronic scanning devices with intent to obtain encoded payment card information. Rodrigues-Montes De Oca also had an active arrest warrant from Nevada.

President Trump and Secretary of Education Linda McMahon have announced their plans to eliminate the Education Department. At this time, they have laid off about half the department.

The current administration believes that education needs to be reined in because so much of what is taught is "woke." I'm not sure what "woke" means, as it seems to be nothing more than a derogatory term. But I do know that the Department of Education does not control what is taught in our classrooms.

The federal Department of Education does not set any curriculum! That is primarily the job of the classroom teacher. There are a few state requirements: for example, fourth graders study Nebraska History, juniors study U.S. History.

The Department of Education does not set graduation requirements. Local boards of education determine each district's requirements, like how many hours of math, science, and English a student must pass to graduate.

The Department of Education does not establish schools or colleges. Those decisions are based on local needs.

The Nebraska Department of Education and professional organizations set standards, broad learning goals. These standards outline the learning objectives and performance expectations for each grade level or subject area, specifying what students should know and be able to do. However, standards are not a curriculum, they are a framework for curriculum development. And they are not enforced beyond the local school level.

When I was a teacher, I used the standards for my various subjects as a basis for my curriculum. They guided my textbook choices. I used them to create learning objectives for my units and daily lesson plans. Those learning objectives became the basis for my assessments. All of that curriculum development was my responsibility, as I was the only teacher of most of the subjects I taught.

In other subject areas or grade levels, teachers and administrators would meet to make curriculum decisions together. That insured that students would have sequenced learning, where a proper foundation was established before harder material was introduced.

What if a teacher isn't following acceptable standards? It is up to principals and other school administrators to deal with that by offering guidance and, if necessary, discipline.

One of the criticisms I hear from government leaders is that teachers receive tenure, and that tenure keeps bad teachers in our schools. Wow - that is not the way it works!

Teachers in our schools are probationary for three years. During those first three years, they can be dismissed for any reason. Principals evaluate these teachers regularly and give them feedback - what they are doing well, where they need to refocus, and new techniques they might try in their classes. If progress isn't made, their employment should be terminated.

After three years of successful teaching, a person has more job security. They are under "continuing contract," which means they will be offered a contract for the coming year unless something drastic happens. There might be a "reduction in force" because class sizes have fallen, and newer teachers are laid off. Or there might be a change in that teacher's behavior.

Tenured teachers are not protected from being fired. There just has to be more documentation. Principals have to make classroom observations and document problems. They have to suggest changes and revisit to see if those changes have been made. Court cases where teachers have been reinstated have been based on a principal's failure to document, not on whether the teacher offered good instruction.

Of course, teachers can be terminated at any time for illegal activities.

Wow - that is not the way it works!Teachers in our schools are probationary for three years. During those first three years, they can be dismissed for any reason. Principals evaluate these teachers regularly and give them feedback - what they are doing well, where they need to refocus, and new techniques they might try in their classes. If progress isn't made, their employment should be terminated.After three years of successful teaching, a person has more job security. They are under "continuing contract," which means they will be offered a contract for the coming year unless something drastic happens. There might be a "reduction in force" because class sizes have fallen, and newer teachers are laid off. Or there might be a change in that teacher's behavior.Tenured teachers are not protected from being fired. There just has to be more documentation. Principals have to make classroom observations and document problems. They have to suggest changes and revisit to see if those changes have been made. Court cases where teachers have been reinstated have been based on a principal's failure to document, not on whether the teacher offered good instruction.Of course, teachers can be terminated at any time for illegal activities.

The Chadron Public Library plans to host an art contest for July 2025 to celebrate the beauty of our gardens, vegetables, and flowers. Seed bank now open in Chadron 

CHADRON — A Chadron State College committee responsible for organizing activities during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) has announced the Lindeken Clock Tower Lighting on April 2 at 7:30 p.m. Morgan Cullan, Title IX Coordinator, invites students and employees to the ceremony.

Cullan said the clock tower will be illuminated in teal and green throughout April and May. Teal is the signature color of the national SAAM in April, and green is the signature color of MHAM in May.

“The clock tower, a mainstay of our campus, will now be illuminated in different colors in support of various awareness months, bringing a vibrant and meaningful display to CSC throughout the year,” Cullan said. “Education on these issues goes beyond the classroom, and this is one way we can reach the campus community members, as well as the community of Chadron.”

She said people passing by the clock tower will be able to scan a QR code posted there to learn more about SAAM and MHAM.

According to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nsvrc.org/saam/history" target="_blank">SAAM</a>&nbsp;website, in the early 2000s, the primary goal of SAAM was raising the visibility of the teal ribbon and the meaning behind it. By the mid-2000s, SAAM focused on prevention.

The online history of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nami.org/Get-Involved/Awareness-Events/Mental-Health-Awareness-Month/" target="_blank">MHAM</a>&nbsp;indicates that supporters wear green ribbons as a visible way to combat bias and discrimination against those dealing with mental health issues.

Cullan hopes the clock tower lighting and other events will help students become aware of campus resources such as counseling, the Title IX Office, Security, the CARE Team, the Eagle Mentor Program, and Academic Services, including tutoring.

“We hope faculty and staff will also have conversations with students about these topics year-round. Students can also join campus organizations to raise awareness such as the Students Against Sexual Harassment (SASH) Club and the Social Work and Psychology (SWAP) Club,” Cullan said.

Cullan acknowledged Student Affairs Graduate Assistant Cooper Reichman for proposing the idea.

Reichman said he thought lighting the clock tower to recognize both awareness months was a good option since it is in the middle of campus compared to C-Hill, which is farther away and has been lit by solar lights for MHAM in the past.

“It is often a prime subject for photos on campus and social media posts. So, I figured the lighting would be a great addition,” Reichman said.

He expects that students will notice the different colors and reflect, even if just in passing, on what they represent.

“I hope that the clock tower lights will reinforce the values and recognition that CSC is striving to bring to these initiatives while also being a beacon to the area,” Reichman said.

Licensed Student Counselor Chelsea Turner, other committee members, and Cullan collaborated with several student organizations to plan the following events.

In the early morning hours of Monday, March 24, 2025, Miguel Colin Tirado, age 40, of Alliance NE, suffered what appeared to be a medical emergency while in custody at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center.&nbsp; Mr. Tirado was detained as a courtesy hold on several charges for Box Butte County, NE.

Multiple officers responded immediately and provided lifesaving measures.&nbsp;

 Regional West Ambulance and the Gering Volunteer Fire Department also responded.&nbsp; Mr. Tirado was transported to Regional West Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.&nbsp;

Nebraska statutes require a grand jury investigation into all in-custody deaths.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

The Nebraska State Patrol is in charge of the investigation.

Legacy Coop donates to United Way of Western Nebraska

&nbsp; Lincoln, Neb., March 26 —&nbsp;The Nebraska LEAD Program honored the 29 Fellows of Class 42 during the Nebraska Agricultural Leadership Council’s Annual Recognition Banquet, held Friday, March 21, on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus. 

Hosted in partnership with UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the banquet celebrated the completion of the two-year leadership development program and recognized key supporters who make the program possible.

As part of their graduation, each Fellow received a digital badge from UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, recognizing their intensive two-year study of agricultural leadership, communication and global perspectives. This micro-credential serves as a formal acknowledgment of their skills and can be shared with employers and professional networks to highlight their leadership development.

During the evening, Nebraska LEAD Class 42 Fellows shared insights from their experiences in the program and highlighted key takeaways from their two-year journey. Dr. Terry Hejny, who served as the program’s director during their first year before retiring, delivered the keynote address. He was also honored with the “Allen G. Blezek Friend of LEAD Award” in recognition of his dedication to agricultural leadership development in Nebraska.

“The Nebraska LEAD Program continues to develop individuals who are committed to the future of agriculture and rural communities,” said Kurtis Harms, director of the Nebraska LEAD Program. “Class 42 has demonstrated outstanding leadership potential, and I have no doubt they will make a lasting impact in their communities, businesses and beyond.”

Nebraska LEAD Program Class 42 Graduates, Recognized at Annual Banquet

Box Butte Development Corporation (BBDC) is proud to announce that Executive Director Hannah Robinson has graduated from the Policy Leadership Academy through First Five Nebraska. Robinson was one of 23 participants selected from over 70 applicants to participate in this program focused on early childhood development and education policy.

The Policy Leadership Academy ran from October 2024 through March 2025 and included five sessions held in Kearney, North Platte, Lincoln, and Columbus.

Throughout the program, Robinson gained valuable insights into the advocacy process, learning how to effectively influence policy and support early childhood initiatives. She also had the opportunity to connect with childcare professionals and industry leaders from across the state.

Robinson’s capstone project focused on implementing a state-provided Childcare Management System designed to simplify the subsidy process, making it easier for providers and parents to access and manage state financial support. The project highlights Robinson’s commitment to strengthening the early childhood landscape in Nebraska and supporting local childcare providers.

"I walked away from this program with a deeper understanding of how to advocate for children in our community and state, as well as our future workforce,"said Robinson. "The skills I gained through this experience will benefit not only our work in early childhood development, but I will also apply the framework I learned to our broader efforts in housing, workforce, and economic development."

Robinson’s participation in the Policy Leadership Academy reinforces BBDC’s mission to grow, maintain, and diversify the economy of Box Butte County. Her expertise in advocacy and policy development will help drive meaningful improvements in early childhood support and beyond.

Western Engineering Company, Inc., of Harlan, Iowa, is the contractor for this project. Work includes milling, asphalt overlay and fog sealing existing curbed areas. Traffic will be maintained with a pilot car and flaggers. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is May 2025. 

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Work will begin on N-2, west of Mullen 

A total of&nbsp;126 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska,&nbsp;learned about their residency assignments March 21&nbsp;during an event at the Omaha Design Center.&nbsp;The 2025 Main Residency Match®&nbsp;-- referred to as Match Day --&nbsp;is an annual rite of passage for medical students, a day when students across the country learn where they will train&nbsp;for&nbsp;the next three to seven years, depending on the&nbsp;medical area of their choice. 

Students are matched through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs to&nbsp;fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.&nbsp;

Forty-six percent of UNMC medical students are staying in Nebraska for their training, with 41% at UNMC. Fifty-three percent matched&nbsp;in primary care, which includes family medicine, internal medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, medicine-preliminary, medicine-psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics.

Nationally, there were&nbsp;43,237 residency positions.&nbsp;

Students are matched through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs to&nbsp;fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.&nbsp;Forty-six percent of UNMC medical students are staying in Nebraska for their training, with 41% at UNMC.
