LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– The Powerball jackpot has been growing since September 8 without a winner. Because of the high jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to set spending and time limits.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 41 consecutive Powerball drawings since September 8 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Saturday, Dec. 13 drawing to $1 billion or $461.3 million with the cash option selected. This is the 7th largest jackpot in the history of the game.

This jackpot run has produced two large Nebraska winners. In the November 5th drawing, a $50,000 Powerball winning ticket was sold at Git 'n Split #09, 951 West O Street in Lincoln. And in the December 1 drawing, a $50,000 Powerball winning ticket was sold at Stop 'n Shop #7, 5640 South 16th Street in Lincoln.

The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.040 billion jackpot.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

Nebraska Medicaid Seeking Clinical Provider to Fill Committee Position

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State College alum Cherokee Rotherham received this year’s Nebraska State College System Counseling Excellence Award for her dedication and commitment to students at Scottsbluff High School. CSC’s Vice President for Enrollment Management Dr. Derry Ebert and Admissions Counselor Kennie Gable presented the award to Rotherham Dec. 1.

According to nomination materials, Rotherham’s goal is to give every student the best possible high school experience and help them confidently step into their future.

Rotherham said she was grateful to be recognized among many dedicated counselors and educators who work tirelessly to support and uplift their students every day.

“This award represents not only the appreciation of my efforts but also the dedication and collaboration of counselors, administrators and colleagues who inspire and support me every day,” Rotherham said.

Rotherham became part of the Scottsbluff High School community when she arrived in 2020, bringing with her more than two decades of experience in education. Throughout her career, she has served in a wide range of roles, including speech technician, elementary teacher, family liaison, library media specialist and K–12 counselor.

Scottsbluff High School Principal Justin Shaddick described Rotherham as someone who is always willing to jump in, willing to learn and makes sure the students’ needs are met. KEARNEY, Neb. – Delegates representing farm and ranch families from all 93 Nebraska counties outlined key agricultural policy priorities and elected leaders for Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) as part of the organization’s 108th Annual Meeting and Convention held Dec. 7-9 in Kearney. Delegates discussed a broad spectrum of agricultural policy issues to provide direction for the organization.

At the heart of their discussion were the challenges and opportunities facing farm and ranch families. From taxes and water to data and regulations, members expressed their shared commitment to preserve and protect what makes Nebraska farming and ranching strong.

“It’s no secret that Nebraskan’s pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation. As an organization, we’re committed to finding ways to lessen that burden. Delegates discussed ideas to better control property taxes, including issues around transparency in taxation as it relates to local tax collection and local bonds, to ensure the public is better informed,” said Katie Olson, NEFB First Vice President.

Delegates adopted policy to support economic development by placing greater emphasis on supporting sparsely populated villages, towns and counties, focusing on workforce housing and childcare.

As farming and ranching modernize, operations are producing more digital data. Members addressed a growing concern about how that information is used, who owns it and what’s being done to keep it protected. Delegates adopted policy to ensure farmers and ranchers retain all rights to their data, while also calling for standards of care and protection of data by third parties with access to the information.

Water is critical to agriculture, and effective water management is just as important. Nebraska continues to examine water quality, quantity and the infrastructure behind it.

“Delegates discussed the best path forward to safeguard irrigation, support sustainable water use and preserve natural resources. Farmers and ranchers understand how important it is to be proactive in addressing natural resources challenges in our state, but any initiative needs to be backed by sound science and should work for farm and ranch families,” said Olson.

Another top issue discussed at the meeting was regulations related to the Nebraska Livestock Brand Act. Last year, the Legislature engaged in discussions about changes to Nebraska’s brand laws. That topic will be back on the table this session.

“Members had a long and heathy discussion about the Brand Act, discussing ideas that could bring clarity or modernization while balancing tradition and protection of livestock operations. Delegates ultimately voted to stand on our current policy, which supports the work of the Brand Committee,” said Olson.

Delegates turned a spotlight on the Make America Health Again (MAHA) movement by advancing policy which will be discussed at the national level during the American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting in January. From food labeling to school food programs to agriculture practices, the MAHA movement has raised several policy questions that matter to agriculture and rural Nebraska.

“In a time when urban and rural interests sometimes feel at odds, delegates emphasized the need for policies grounded in fairness, transparency and respect for agriculture’s role in feeding the nation. Their effective leadership is essential for advancing agriculture and ensuring the overall prosperity of our state and our nation,” said Olson.

In addition to setting state and making national policy recommendations, delegates also held elections for positions on the Nebraska Farm Bureau board of directors.

Lance Atwater, an Adams/Webster County Farm Bureau member, was elected to serve as the South-Central Region representative. Atwater and his wife, Krystal, have a row crop farm near Ayr.

Bree DeMontigny, a Cherry County Farm Bureau member, was re-elected to serve as the North Central Region representative. DeMontigny has a commercial cow/calf ranch near Valentine.

Steve Stroup, a Dundy County Farm Bureau member, was re-elected to serve as the Southwest Region representative. Stroup and his wife Julie have a cow/calf operation along with a feed lot and grow irrigated corn and hay near Benkelman.

Dawn Kucera, a Madison County Farm Bureau member, was re-elected to serve as the Ag Promotion At-Large representative. Kucera and her husband, Regan, have a row crop farm, growing corn and soybeans near Madison.

Matthew Erickson, a Johnson County Farm Bureau member, was newly elected to serve as the Youth At-Large representative. Erickson and his wife, Riley, have a row crop farm and they custom farm. They also raise chickens for Smart Chicken near Sterling.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Sets Policy on Key Issues, Elect Leaders at Annual Meeting

The Bean Improvement Cooperative (BIC) and the National Pea Improvement Association (NAPIA) held their biennial meeting in Lincoln on Nov. 4-6, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and BIC. The international meeting had 15 countries represented by students and leaders in pulses research.&nbsp;

“It was decided from the beginning to be done every two years. This is the second time that both BIC and NAPIA meetings are done together,” said Dr. Carlos Urrea, UNL Dry Bean Breeding Specialist and a member of BIC. “The International BIC &amp; NAPIA Biennial Meeting allows members and colleagues worldwide and from varied disciplines to interact and exchange information on bean and pulse improvement.” The venue provides a forum on recent research developments and allows collaboration to plan projects in pulse crops. It also enhances collaboration with scientific and industry leaders from all over the world.&nbsp;

Dr. Andy Benson from UNL was one of the event's keynote speakers and collaborated with Urrea on a gut health project. Urrea provided seeds for the Mesoamerican Diversity Panel, which included 299 entries. The MDP comprises beans from the Durango and Mesoamerican gene pools. Beans from the Durango race are pinto, pink and great northern. Navys, small reds and blacks are from the Mesoamerican bean pool. Benson’s research combined quantitative and functional genomics in cereal grains and legumes to link naturally occurring genetic variation in the plants with desirable microbiome and host responses. His topic at the meeting was “Genetic Analysis of Traits in Dry Beans that Affect the Human Gut Microbiome.”

Graduate students are also invited to the meeting, providing an opportunity to showcase their research as posters. The research posters covered heat tolerance, harnessing genomic selection, disease resistance and more. Students were recognized for their oral and poster presentations, with first and second place awarded in each category.&nbsp;

“Graduate students were able to participate and had the opportunity to network with faculty and people from the pulses industry,” Urrea said. “There were also 12 international/national travel award winners. We were able to give those travel awards because of the sponsor's generosity.”&nbsp;

NAPIA’s originating organization, the National Pea Improvement Association, was formed in 1956 to support fresh pea breeders. Over the years, the focus began to turn to dry pea. In 1999, the name was changed to North American Pulse Improvement Association (NAPIA) to include other food legumes and the Canadian pulse industry.

Anglers who have received a mailed survey about Nebraska fishing — or the text or email version — are encouraged to complete it. Their responses will help shape the decisions Nebraska Game and Parks makes about fisheries management.

Nebraska’s fisheries are constantly changing, as are its anglers. Game and Parks periodically surveys anglers to learn how their activities, opinions and desires change over time. The information is used to adjust the agency’s approaches to managing the state’s fisheries.

The comprehensive survey was sent to 10,000 randomly selected 2025 Nebraska fishing license holders. That means each survey respondent represents more than 20 other anglers in the state.

Game and Parks is joined by the Bureau of Sociological Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in conducting this survey.

Anglers Encouraged to Complete Survey

OMAHA, Neb. - The Nebraska Broadcasters Association Foundation (NBAF) has awarded $17,000 in scholarships to four students who are currently attending Nebraska universities with aspirations to work in broadcasting upon their graduation.

The following students have been awarded a NBAF scholarship for the 2025-2026 academic year:

Lucy Mendez, a junior at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, pursuing a dual major in Broadcasting and Journalism.

Eli Rodriguez, a sophomore at University of Nebraska – Lincoln pursuing a double major in Sports Media &amp; Communication and Broadcasting.

&nbsp;Jacqueline Ruiz-Rodriguez, a junior at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, pursuing a dual major in Broadcasting &amp; Journalism.

Barrett Stearns, a sophomore at Wayne State College, pursuing a dual major in Sports Media and Mass Communication.

Current NBA Board Chairmen Mark Jensen, President of MWB Broadcasting II, LLC said, “Nebraska Broadcasters Association Foundation is proud to celebrate our scholarship winners, whose talent and ambition promise to illuminate the future of our industry. May these scholarships open doors to new opportunities and be a vote of confidence in their abilities.”

The NBAF offers scholarships to assist students enrolled in radio and/or television broadcasting or broadcast journalism educational programs at designated higher education institutions in Nebraska. Qualified applications are reviewed by a panel of NBA board members. Scholarship levels are $5,000.00 (Marty Riemenschneider Scholarship), $3,500 (Dick Palmquist Scholarship) and $2,500.00 (NBA Foundation Scholarship). The number of scholarships and total dollar amount awarded each year is at the discretion of the NBA board of directors based on application quality and quantity. More than $350,000 in college scholarships have been awarded by the NBA and NBAF since 1977.

Qualified applications are reviewed by a panel of NBA board members. Scholarship levels are $5,000.00 (Marty Riemenschneider Scholarship), $3,500 (Dick Palmquist Scholarship) and $2,500.00 (NBA Foundation Scholarship). The number of scholarships and total dollar amount awarded each year is at the discretion of the NBA board of directors based on application quality and quantity. More than $350,000 in college scholarships have been awarded by the NBA and NBAF since 1977.

MEAD, Neb.&nbsp;– Today, Governor Jim Pillen celebrated the tremendous progress made during his administration to clean up the solid and liquid waste left in the aftermath of the shutdown of the AltEn facility site in Mead. Gov. Pillen was joined by Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment (DWEE) Director Jesse Bradley, Saunders County Board Supervisor Bill Reece and Don Gunster, an environmental contractor for ERM Newfields.

“Cleanup of this site was among my top priorities when I took office, and I’m proud of the fact that when we got involved, a lot of people rolled up their sleeves and collaborated to fix this problem,” said Gov. Pillen. “This cleanup has cost hundreds of millions of dollars, but it won’t cost Nebraska taxpayers a dime.”

Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly, who has attended community meetings about the clean-up efforts, acknowledged the concerns he and the Governor shared in 2022 when they discussed the situation in Mead and wondered -- what if the same thing happened in their own hometowns?

“The Governor had his eye on this problem from the get-go,” added Lt. Gov. Kelly.

In addition to serving on the Saunders County Board, Reece has been a member of the Mead Community Group, which has closely monitored developments at the site.

“The Mead community and nearby residents have been resilient throughout these cleanup efforts. They know their town is worth standing up for and we’re glad to see the progress that has been made at AltEn,” said Supervisor Reece. “I want to thank the State and the AltEn Facility Response Group (AFRG) for being responsive, responsible, professional and timely and for keeping the community informed during every step of the remediation.”

The now-closed AltEn facility made ethanol using treated seed corn, which generated pesticide-impacted byproducts that were improperly stored on site. AltEn shut down in February 2021. In June 2021, six seed companies came together and formed the AFRG to remediate the site through the state’s Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP). Those seed companies are AgReliant Genetics, Bayer, Beck’s Superior Hybrids, Corteva Agriscience, Syngenta Seeds, and WinField Solutions.

Because the AFRG is working through the VCP, the remedial actions have been completed at no cost to Nebraska taxpayers.

Through the VCP, the AFRG has carried out remedial action plans (RAPs) for the site’s wetcake byproducts and the wastewater stored in the site’s industrial lagoons. The RAP cleanup efforts completed to date include:

The AFRG has also improved stormwater controls on site.

“There has been a lot of great work done at the AltEn facility,” said Director Bradley. “But there is more to be done, and our team at DWEE is committed to continue this work with the AFRG and the community to ensure that the site is cleaned up and the Mead community continues to thrive.”

“We have made significant progress and value the community’s partnership and support from DWEE,” added Don Gunster with ERM Newfields. “The AltEn site has been stabilized, and we are planning the remaining activities to complete the job.”

Moving forward, the AFRG will submit and complete RAPs for lagoon solids, groundwater and on-site soils, per a memorandum of agreement between the group and DWEE. Those plans will ensure that continued and sustained progress occurs at the site.  The AFRG and DWEE have also agreed to complete future off-site environmental investigations to determine if an off-site RAP is necessary.

NGPC Urges Nebraskans To Follow Best Practices When Near Wild Birds

Producers and community members are invited to attend the “Beef Systems Research and Management Forum” on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 5 p.m. at the Knight Museum in Alliance. The event is held in partnership with UNL Extension and the Cattle Capital Cattlemen’s Affiliate.

The educational beef cattle program will feature presentations from UNL Extension Specialists.

-Dr. Karla Wilke will discuss management considerations for confinement feeding cows prior to turnout on grass, including nutrition and system design.

-Dr. Mitch Stephenson will share findings from his ongoing research on virtual fencing technology and its potential applications in rangeland management.

UNL Livestock Systems Hosts Educational Event in Alliance

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) issued an order today, Dec. 9, approving a $23.9 million agreement in Black Hills Energy’s request to raise natural gas rates.

The decision allows Black Hills to increase its fixed-customer and distribution charges – the rates regulated by the PSC. The average impact to bills will be an additional $2.85 per month for residential customers, $5.34 per month for small commercial customers&nbsp;and $72.01 per month for large commercial customers, according to data presented to the PSC. The new rates will take effect Jan. 1.

Black Hills initially sought a $34.9 million rate increase in an application filed May 1 with the PSC. Following an independent assessment of the application by PSC staff, three town hall meetings and negotiations with a Public Advocate appointed to represent consumers, Black Hills ultimately agreed to a smaller rate increase of $23.9 million – a reduction of about $11 million from its original filing.

Black Hills and the Public Advocate presented details of the settlement to the PSC at an Oct. 15 public hearing, leading to today’s order approving the agreement.

“We commend all parties in this case for engaging in a collaborative and thorough review process,” said PSC Chairman Tim Schram, District 3. “Reaching this agreement spared ratepayers the added expense and uncertainty of a long, fully litigated case, while still ensuring the outcome is fair, reasonable and in the public interest.”

In August, Black Hills began charging customers increased interim rates that are higher than the final rates approved today. The company must refund the difference between the interim rates and final rates, with interest, to customers. Black Hills will file a refund plan by March 1 for review and approval by the PSC.

The new rates will take effect Jan. 1.Black Hills initially sought a $34.9 million rate increase in an application filed May 1 with the PSC. Following an independent assessment of the application by PSC staff, three town hall meetings and negotiations with a Public Advocate appointed to represent consumers, Black Hills ultimately agreed to a smaller rate increase of $23.9 million – a reduction of about $11 million from its original filing.Black Hills and the Public Advocate presented details of the settlement to the PSC at an Oct. 15 public hearing, leading to today’s order approving the agreement.“We commend all parties in this case for engaging in a collaborative and thorough review process,” said PSC Chairman Tim Schram, District 3. “Reaching this agreement spared ratepayers the added expense and uncertainty of a long, fully litigated case, while still ensuring the outcome is fair, reasonable and in the public interest.”In August, Black Hills began charging customers increased interim rates that are higher than the final rates approved today. PSC Approves Settlement Agreement in Black Hills Energy Rate Case

Richard Krul, 75-years-old of rural Scottsbluff, passed away at a Denver hospital on Dec. 5, 2025, due to injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Dec. 4, 2025 in rural Scotts Bluff County.

The accident was reported at 4:36 p.m. on Dec. 4, 2025. Investigation revealed that Richard Krul was on a UTV side by side and appeared to be checking his mail, parked on the north side of Lake Minatare Road near the intersection of County Road 24, facing east. Mr. Krul turned right to cross Lake Minatare Road, directly into the path of an eastbound pickup driven by Aaron Teppert, 39-years-old, of rural Scottsbluff. The vehicles collided and both came to rest in the ditch on the south side of Lake Minatare Road. The pickup was on its top with the driver inside, while Mr. Krul was ejected and his UTV was upright. Multiple witnesses saw the accident happen and immediately stopped to render aid. Both men were transported to Regional West Medical Center by Regional West ambulance.&nbsp;

Witnesses directly behind the Teppert vehicle stated that he was traveling at the speed limit and had no time to react when the UTV crossed the highway directly in front of him.

The Nebraska State Patrol, Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department, and Minatare Fire Department Rescue Unit also assisted at the scene.

CSC’s Winter Commencement Set for Friday, Dec. 12

KEARNEY, Neb. – With rolling Sandhills, winding rivers, towering bluffs and colorful prairies, Nebraska’s landscapes offer endless opportunities for reflection.

That idea is at the heart of this year’s Nebraska Emerging Writers and Artists Contest, which invites high school students across the state to explore “Nebraska’s Land, Nature and Memories” through original writing and artwork.

The annual competition celebrates young creators who are inspired by the state’s natural world, encouraging them to share their own experiences or highlight one of the hidden treasures found here.

Participants can submit one composition in a single category – essay, short story, poem or art – with all entries judged by University of Nebraska at Kearney undergraduate students. The art category includes photography, painting, drawing or 3D pieces.

Open to Nebraska high school freshmen through seniors, the contest offers $500 scholarships from the UNK Department of English for first-place winners in each of the writing categories, with runners-up receiving $200 awards. The first- and second-place entries in the art category will receive $100 and $50 in art supplies, respectively.

All winners and runners-up will also be invited to share their work during UNK’s Student Language and Literature Conference in April.

Submissions are due Feb. 13, 2026, and must follow the posted guidelines, including word limits for written work and file-size requirements for artwork. Each art entry should also include a brief statement explaining its connection to the theme.

High Schoolers Asked to Capture Nebraska’s Beauty in Annual UNK Writing and Art Contest

ALLIANCE, Neb. - Alliance High School's National Honor Society is conducting a Winter Coat and Backpack Drive during the basketball games on Friday, Dec. 12.

Backpacks are being collected to benefit Capstone Child Advocacy Center, a local organization that works to ensure justice and healing for child abuse victims and their families in Western Nebraska. Coats will be distributed to Emerson Elementary School, Grandview Elementary School and Alliance Middle School students in need of winter coats.

Monetary donations will also be accepted. All proceeds will be used to purchase backpacks and coats.

Preliminary results from the 2025 Nebraska November firearm deer season show statewide harvest fell 7 percent from 2024, which was expected, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Given that populations are down after several years of drought, harsh winters and disease outbreaks — and permit numbers have been reduced to aid in recovery — the lower harvest was no surprise.Whitetail harvest is down 10 percent from last year. Whitetail buck harvest is off 3 percent from 2024. Antlerless harvest fell 26 percent from last year and 54 percent from five years ago.Mule deer harvest rose 4 percent from last year. Mule deer buck harvest is up 6 percent from last year. Antlerless mule deer harvest is down 9 percent from last year and 67&nbsp;percent from five years ago.Game and Parks’ goal is for herds to recover to a high enough population that buck harvest can increase 20&nbsp;percent for whitetail and 25&nbsp;percent for mule deer.“It’s important to remember herd recovery takes time,” said Luke Meduna, Game and Parks’ big game program manager. “We’ve taken action to help our deer populations rebound. We’ve reduced antlerless tags 64&nbsp;percent over the last five years and buck permit sales have been reduced more than 15&nbsp;percent — but we have a way to go before we get back to where we want to be.“November Firearm permits were reduced 2&nbsp;percent and antlerless tags were reduced 20&nbsp;percent from last year, so the changes we’ve seen from last year’s harvest correlate with the changes in permits,” he said.Meduna added that hunters should start seeing the results of the reduced antlerless whitetail harvest in buck harvest results over the next few years.Nebraska’s deer herds have faced several years of challenges, contributing to the current results. Permit numbers and harvest were increased in 2019 and 2020 to address depredation issues affecting producers across much of the state.&nbsp;Since then, severe drought has affected nearly all the state, increasing hemorrhagic disease and reducing habitat quantity and quality, which negatively impacted deer abundance. Severe winters also have reduced available food sources and increased stress, further affecting deer populations in northern Nebraska.Available November Firearm permits have decreased each year since 2022. They decreased by 2&nbsp;percent in 2025, 13&nbsp;percent in 2024, 6&nbsp;percent in 2023 and 4&nbsp;percent in 2022.Final harvest results will be available following the close of all deer seasons. Archery season closes Dec. 31, while muzzleloader season is Dec. 1-31. The late antlerless season is Jan. 1-15, while the River Antlerless late season is Jan. 1-15.Hunters are invited to learn more about the 2025 season, big game research, management and more at the big game public meetings scheduled in person and online in December and January.
