After years of planning, Alliance will add solar power from a local source to its energy portfolio as the project west of town nears completion.

Interconnection Systems Incorporated (ISI) began building a solar farm this past spring for Sandhills Solar on 56 acres of land leased from the City of Alliance. The arrays of panels will be capable of generating 7.8 megawatts of electricity when operating at 100 percent City Electric Superintendent Kirby Bridge explained. On a regular day, he added, the city uses 15-16 Mw. “The big part of this I like, we pay the same price for the next 25 years with a raise of .001 percent a year,” he said.

Adding this much renewable energy from the sun, harvested here in Box Butte County, is exciting. I applaud our city leadership for “going green” and cutting down on the amount of electricity we will use that has been generated from fossil fuels.

The solar farm, built at the property that houses the municipal well field, turned out about the same as expected from the planning stage a couple years ago, probably with the exception of updated equipment and technology. Kirby said the last of the construction is being completed as ISI waits for the last main breaker that ties it into the City’s overhead power line. He said the breaker should ship the end or March with installation a couple weeks after that. The array could come online the first part of May at the earliest or possibly run into June before they energize it, he said.

The City’s investment has been relatively minor compared to the cost if they were to build and operate their own facility. Kirby said his crews rebuilt the mile or so of line along Country Club Road putting the distribution line on top and transmission line on bottom. “We built it all ourselves”, he said, “and finished in October.”

Some long-term City aspirations never come to fruition or face a long list of hurdles to become reality. In this case, Kirby commented, “”It has home pretty smoothly: zoning through the county went smooth, pretty flat site – location is perfect. You really can’t see it from the road (and we’re) still getting benefits from solar.”

Commercial, industrial and residential electric customers will not notice a difference as the solar power flows into our grid. Kirby said it is supposed to be seamless, noting the City’s load management will not change and the power Alliance does not use from the solar farm will be shipped to someone else.

Embracing renewable energy at the municipal level sets a good example for our community’s residents. Sandhills solar is serving that demand as they are building 16 solar farms including projects in Gering and Sidney. Electricity generated is distributed through the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska.

Alliance Police Department seeking public help to find missing woman

Today, three dedicated linemen from the City of Alliance, Ethan Korth, DJ Weare, and Fidel Aguilar, departed for Wahoo, Nebraska, to assist with power restoration efforts following the severe blizzard and ice storm earlier this week. This storm caused extensive damage across the region, leaving thousands of residents without power.

City of Alliance lineman head to Wahoo to help with power

<a>Lincoln, NEB.</a>—&nbsp;&nbsp;Nebraska State Troopers&nbsp;removed 18 impaired drivers from the road as part of a special enforcement effort around St. Patrick’s Day.

“For many, St. Patrick’s Day marks the beginning of the spring travel season,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We want to remind all motorists to help keep Nebraska roads safe. Remember to always drive sober, follow posted speed limits, put your phone down, and wear your seatbelt.”

In total, troopers arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence. Troopers also issued citations for speeding (323), open alcohol container (7), minor in possession of alcohol (6), driving under suspension (15), no seat belt (9), and improper child restraint (6). Troopers also performed 97 motorists assists during the grant period.

The campaign ran from Saturday, March 15, through Monday, March 17, as part of this operation. This effort is made possible thanks in part to a grant for $20,172 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

On 03/20/25 (9:43PM), the Scottsbluff Police Department and Scottsbluff Fire Department, were dispatched to 1022 11th&nbsp;Ave. regarding a fire. 

Upon arrival it was determined that an adult male, Anthony Cervantes (74), had been doused with an accelerant and set on fire. Cervantes was found to be deceased at the scene.

The suspect was identified as Anthony’s son, Elijah Cervantes (44). Both men reside at the home at 1022 11th&nbsp;Ave. 

Elijah Cervantes was located and subsequently arrested for 2nd&nbsp;Degree Murder and 1st&nbsp;Degree Arson.

CHADRON – Chadron State College will offer an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) Degree in Mental Health and Addictions starting in Fall 2025. The online program will advance student opportunities, offering school counselors the chance to fill requirements toward becoming a Nebraska Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (LMHP) or a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC).

To qualify for this degree program, students must have previously earned a master’s degree in School Counseling or another related degree.

Dr. Kathleen Woods, Chair of the Department of Counselor of Education, said the degree will be valuable for both those seeking career advancement and the clients they will be able to assist.

"An Ed.S. in Mental Health and Addictions empowers school counselors to bridge the gap in Nebraska's mental health services, equipping them with the skills to support students in need and fostering healthier communities for generations to come. We are thrilled to provide this pathway for school counselors to attain clinical mental health licensure," Woods said.

According to a proposal to offer the degree approved by the Nebraska State College System, the Coordinating Commission for Post-Secondary Education, and the Higher Learning Commission, rural Nebraska needs mental health professionals, including those licensed to help people struggling with alcohol and drug use and abuse. Additionally, there is a growing need for LMHP and LADC workers with an educational background in school counseling.

The Alliance FFA Chapter is celebrating a major achievement as 29 of its students have qualified to compete at the Nebraska State FFA Convention in Lincoln from April 2-4. This is a remarkable accomplishment that showcases the dedication and talent of the chapter’s members. Students compete amongst 21 schools in the panhandle to earn the rights to qualify for state in various competitions.&nbsp;

One of the chapter’s standout achievements is Seth Meyring’s selection as a State Star Finalist. This is one of the highest honors in FFA, with only 24 students statewide earning a finalist spot. At the state convention, only four overall Stars will be awarded.

The following students will receive their State FFA Degree, a prestigious honor recognizing their commitment to agricultural education and leadership:Macy Brooks, Jackson Bailey, Ashley Carr, Seth Meyring, Shyla Salcido, Josie Sanders, Sutten Parkison.

Alliance FFA qualifies 29 students for State Convention

Tanner Blomenkamp, who was the subject of an APD investigation involving inappropriate contact with a minor has entered a guilty plea on two charges. Blomencamp, who managed the Alliance Runza, was originally charged with multiple felonies after an investigation by the Alliance Police Department. This investigation included evidence resulting from a forensic search of Mr. Blomencamp’s cell phone based on a search warrant obtained by the APD.

Blomenkamp chose to enter a plea of “no contest” on one count of Possession of Child Pornography and one count of Enticement by Electronic Communication. Both of these charges are felonies and could result in a sentence of 20+ years in prison. Blomenkamp is currently out on a bond of $10,000.00. He is due back in court for sentencing On May 28th at 11:00am.

The officers who worked on this case should be commended for their training, dedication and diligence in pursuing this investigation. These types of cases depend on meticulous collection and preservation of evidence in order to have a strong case to present. Sergeant David LaDuke and SRO Tyler Sherlock worked tirelessly to gather the evidence needed, including forensic evidence from the suspect’s cell phone. We are the only law enforcement agency in the area with the technology to perform this type of analysis. In this case, technology was crucial in putting together a successful prosecution which resulted in the suspect entering a guilty plea after seeing the evidence that would be used against him. Without this technology, the outcome may have been different. We are thankful that we were able to get justice for this victim.

CHADRON – Lindsay Cody of Halsey, Nebraska, is Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for March.

Cody is a junior majoring in chemistry and minoring in human biology and business. She said she’s always known she wanted to pursue healthcare and help people.&nbsp;

Assistant Professor of Physics and Chemistry Dr. Clint Evrard said Cody is a joy to have in the department.

“Lindsay is an amazing student and person. Lindsay has a ‘never say die’ attitude about her academics and life in general. When Lindsay finds herself up against a difficult subject, she has this way of just shrugging her shoulders, giving one of her big and joyful smiles, and diving into the work required to succeed. Never once have I heard a word of complaint, or any negativity come from Lindsay. Lindsay’s positive and upbeat personality affects everyone she is around. She has the ability to make everyone’s day better just by being in the same room. Lindsay is joy and dedication bundled into a single person,” Evrard said.

Cody has been a member of Project Strive since she arrived at Chadron State College as a freshman in the Fall of 2022.

Project Strive Director Jen Schaer said Cody has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to both personal and academic growth since joining the program.

“In addition to her commitment to academics and leadership, Lindsay brings a sense of joy and humor to our program. She often brightens our days with funny stories and engaging conversations, making her a delightful presence in our Project Strive offices. We are truly fortunate to have Lindsay as a part of our program, where her positive energy and enthusiasm inspire those around her,” Schaer said.

Cody is an involved member of the college community. She has been recognized with multiple scholarships and has been on the Dean’s List many times. Cody is a part of several clubs and organizations including Project Strive, Health Professions Club, Every Eagles Succeeds, Residence Life Association, Eagle Mentors, and Chemistry Club.

Student Activities Coordinator Elise Oetken said Cody is great at balancing her responsibilities with school, work, and all of her campus involvements.

“Lindsay joined the Eagle Mentor Program this year, and she is a kind and dedicated mentor. She brings fun and energy to her small group, and she has a way of really connecting with new students at CSC. She is always energized and ready to make you laugh. I am glad I have the opportunity to work with her,” Oetken said.

Cody is also a Student Ambassador, and Courtney Bremer, Assistant Director of Admissions, said Cody deserves the recognition of the award.

“Lindsay is without a doubt a hard worker and a very caring individual. She takes challenges head on and is consistent in making sure that every detail is attended to,” Bremer said.

Cody enjoys being an active member on campus and engaging with other students through the Residence Life Association (RLA).

“I like being a part of RLA because it is both a job and a club. I enjoy hosting events and giving the campus fun things to do. I also like spending time with the residents on my floor. I have been able to make some really great connections this year,” Cody said.

Cody also enjoys helping the college community as much as she can.

“Being involved in Every Eagle Succeeds is a very rewarding experience. We are in charge of the Eagle Exchange which gives students the opportunity to get clothes and hygiene products. We want all students to feel like they can get the things they need. I also love the other members of the club. It’s like a little community of super sweet and caring people. Those qualities are important to have&nbsp;<a>in order for</a>&nbsp;the club to function and make sure we are providing care for as many people as we can,” Cody said.

Cody plans to graduate in May 2026 and hopes to get into a pharmacology school. She would like to eventually own or co-own a pharmacy.

“I want to help people and healthcare really interests me. Pharmacy seems like a good fit for me and my desires,” Cody said.

Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO program, located in the lower level of the King Library, is an academic enrichment program committed to helping students succeed. Cody named Chadron Student of the Month

A Gering man who managed an Alliance restaurant has entered a plea agreement in his child pornography case.

31-year-old Tanner Blomencamp was recently charged with several felonies.

Blomencamp has entered a plea of “no contest” on one count of Possession of Child Pornography and one count of Enticement by Electronic Communication.&nbsp;&nbsp; Both are felonies.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Child Pornography Possession conviction carries a possible punishment that is up to 20 years imprisonment.&nbsp; &nbsp;

According to Box Butte County District Court records, the crimes were committed between December 1, 2024, and February 28, 2025.

Sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28th at 11:00 am.

Blomencamp was released from the Box Butte County Jail after posting ten thousand dollars cash bond.

Gering Man Enters "No Contest" Plea On Two Felony Counts

&nbsp; The Alliance Police Department would like to remind all residents that we are now actively enforcing the city codes and ordinances related to parking violations. Over the last few days, officers have placed warning stickers on illegally parked vehicles, trailers, boats and other items parked in the city right of way in violation of code. In most cases, the officers have been able to locate the owner, issue a verbal warning and the owner has corrected the issue. In cases where the violation persisted, these vehicles have been impounded.

If you have had a vehicle or other item impounded, please call 308-762-4955 to claim and recover your vehicle. Any vehicle held in the APD Impound Lot accrues a $10.00 per day storage fee in addition to the tow bill. If the vehicle is stored at the Wrecker Lot, fees are at the discretion of the wrecker service.

The most common violation we see with relation to automobiles falls under Section 26-132 which prohibits parking a vehicle in the public right of way which is unregistered or inoperable. The Trailer Parking Ordinance is copied below, as we also see a large number of violations in that area. It is important to keep in mind that the curb strip is city right of way (see attached photo).Sec. 26-131. Trailer and recreational vehicle storage.(a) No person may park or store a vehicle appurtenance within the City's right of way or property, except as provided for in Subsections (b) and (c) of this Section.(b) Subsection (a) of this section shall not apply to parking or leaving any roll-off or construction trailers used by contractors or property owners with the issuance of a building permit for construction on the adjacent property, so long as the permit remains valid, and the location does not interfere with any other sections of this article.(c) It shall not be a violation of Subsection (a) of this Section to park any vehicle appurtenance within the City's right of way or property for a period of less than 24 hours for purposes of utilizing such vehicle appurtenance, as long as within such 24-hour period, the vehicle appurtenance is completely removed from the City's right of way or property (other than when it is being transported). Panhandle police activity, March 1 - March 18 

CHADRON – The Open Frontier Creative District in Chadron has been awarded $100,000 in development grant funding by the Nebraska Arts Council.

The award, announced March 6, will assist in several projects that will either enhance or sustain the arts in Chadron.

The development grant will support four separate organizations,” said Kerri Rempp, director of Discover Northwest Nebraska and the chair of the Creative District Committee. “The committee was dedicated to incorporating multiple projects into the grant application.”

“The project aligns with the mission of supporting local/regional artists and fostering creative expression. It has strong potential to enhance the local arts scene, benefiting both established and emerging artists,” wrote the judging panel in its award notice.

Most of the funds - $87,500 – will go toward the purchase of a portable stage for live performances within the community. The stage will be owned by Fur Trade Days, Inc., but organizers will be able to make the stage available for other live performance events.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to bring new infrastructure to the community,” said Dave Hockenbary of Fur Trade Days. “This is a great first step toward acquiring a new stage as the current one is showing its age. We will be launching additional fundraising efforts to complete the project.”

Chadron Open Art will be allocated $6,000 to sustain the organization’s mission, and the Chadron Arts Center will receive $5,000 for infrastructure repairs.

“This grant is an incredible opportunity for Chadron Open Art to enrich our community through continued arts programming, art shows, and cultural events. It empowers us to continue nurturing local creativity, strengthening community connections, and making Chadron a more inspiring and inviting place for everyone,” said Chadron Open Art board member Danny Anderson.

“This grant will enable the Chadron Art Center to repair the roof and interior damage, and allow the building to continue to be a beautiful venue for promoting the arts,” said Don Foulk, president of the Art Center board.

Finally, the Chadron Public Library will start a seed bank with $1,500 in funding. The library will distribute growing pots and establish a library of tools and implements for gardeners to check-out with the goal of fostering a sense of community and the ability to produce healthy foods at home. In addition, the library will provide classes on techniques and useful tips, host a harvest feast for participants and engage the community in an art show, said Head Librarian Rossella Tesch.

As district administrator for the Open Frontier Creative District, the City of Chadron will oversee the grant with assistance from the creative district committee. The grant cycle lasts two years.

“I’m grateful to the Creative District and all those who had the out-of-box thinking on capturing some of this grant money for several projects,” said City Manager Tom Menke.

The bedroom, featuring cardboard bale walls, was roomy though the mattress seemed a little too broken in. And part of the fruit cup contents at the breakfast bar may have been missing.

Arrived early and was asked to volunteer sorting curbside recycling bags to earn a lower weekend rate. Thought we’d give it a go then left upon finding a dirty diaper and rotten taco. Yuck! KAB Airbnb overrated!

Wow, the Airbnb work dream again. Actually, that enormous quilted-top mattress somebody left went to the loose fill section of the Alliance Municipal Landfill last week. I think someone took the doors home. That toilet was no good and there is already a functional one at the Keep Alliance Beautiful recycling center. Rodney may charge us to take that odd tire left in a bag – so it wouldn’t get wet? None of the televisions dumped after hours worked. Who ever heard of spending the night in a recycling center anyway? Crazy.

Actually, that enormous quilted-top mattress somebody left went to the loose fill section of the Alliance Municipal Landfill last week. I think someone took the doors home. That toilet was no good and there is already a functional one at the Keep Alliance Beautiful recycling center. Rodney may charge us to take that odd tire left in a bag – so it wouldn’t get wet? None of the televisions dumped after hours worked. Who ever heard of spending the night in a recycling center anyway? Crazy.<figure>

President Trump and Secretary of Education Linda McMahon have announced more cuts to the Department of Education, with the intent of eliminating the department. Education is primarily a state and local responsibility. So just what do they do at the federal level?

The department's allocation was $238 billion in fiscal year 2024 - less than 2% of the total federal budget. The agency had about 4,400 employees, the smallest of any cabinet-level department. At this time, the Trump administration has laid off about half the department.

In 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed a bill creating the Department of Education. The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare was divided into Education (ED) and Health and Human Services (DHHS) in 1980. The idea was that each of these areas had so many responsibilities that it would be more efficient to separate them into two agencies.

Disbursing billions in student loans each year

Operating the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, which allows students to apply for loans, grants and other college aid

Providing funding to help poor and disabled students enrolled in K-12 schools

Ensuring equal access to education through its Office of Civil Rights

Operating the Pell grant program, which provides qualifying low- and middle-income students with up to $7,400 per year to attend college

Assisting states in funding public charter schools and specialized programs like Career and Technical Education 

Overseeing the college accreditation system by reviewing all federally recognized accrediting agencies

Collecting data on education and student outcomes, from early to higher education 

Supporting research in education to find the most effective teaching methods

Low-income students hoping to go to college or enroll in vocational programs fill out the FAFSA to determine their eligibility for scholarships, grants, or federally-guaranteed loans. FAFSA is completed by about 17 million students every year. The college loan portfolio is currently $1.5 trillion. Some other agency would have to pick up the responsibility of managing these funds and the repayment of student loans. According to Project 2025, the most logical destination is the Treasury Department.

Much of the Education Department's money for K-12 schools is funneled through large federal programs. These programs direct resources to low-income schools and to specific programs within schools. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act funds go to schools to support students with disabilities and the services they desperately need. It has been suggested that those functions could be transferred to DHHS.

The collection of data and the measuring of student progress - could it really be moved to Census?

The department enforces civil rights laws designed to prevent race or sex-based discrimination in schools. Can this be transferred to the Justice Department?

These programs are important enough that somebody has to provide them. If all responsibilities for education are shifted to states, that means a significant increase in our local taxes.

It is difficult for me to believe that it would be more efficient to move all these functions to other departments, or to shift them to states. There are valid reasons why Congress established each of them, and why the Education Department was created as a separate agency. Laying off over 2000 people from roles where they have expertise in such things as Special Education and civil rights guidance doesn't make sense. It's not as if that work doesn't have to be done.

The department's primary responsibilities are funding for low-income schools, special education for disabled students, loans for low-income college students, and guidance for schools on civil rights. Abandoning any of these responsibilities would harm students and families - and our nation's economic future.

Getting Ahead: The role of the Department of Education

CHADRON – March is designated as Chadron State College’s Advising Month. Summer 2025 enrollment opens on&nbsp;Monday, March 24 for all students. Fall 2025 enrollment also begins on Monday, March 24 for graduate, post-baccalaureate, and ROTC students. Seniors can enroll starting Tuesday, March 25, juniors on Wednesday, March 26, sophomores on Thursday, March 27, and freshmen on&nbsp;Friday, March 28.

Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Kimberly Paddock-O’Reilly said she encourages students to schedule a time to meet with their faculty advisor to ensure they are on track for graduation.&nbsp;

“We encourage students to prepare for Advising Month by placing their course selections in their shopping carts prior to registration week to make the process easier,” Paddock-O’Reilly said.

A tutorial video on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/academics/faculty-advising/" target="_blank">faculty advising webpage</a>&nbsp;demonstrates how to place classes into the shopping cart.

Courses in high demand will fill up quickly, Paddock-O’Reilly said.

“The sooner you register, the more likely you are to secure a seat in the course,” she said.

If a course is full, faculty may also help complete a waitlist request.&nbsp;Students who have a double major are encouraged to visit with an advisor for each program.

Guidelines on the web page outline students' responsibilities for learning the name of their faculty advisor from their MyCSC account, making an appointment to meet with them to register, and making follow-up appointments to monitor progress toward graduation.

The page recommends that students complete these steps before the advising appointment: review the online catalog and specific major or endorsement requirements and make a list of possible future courses and write down any questions about courses.

During the advising appointment, faculty advisors may discuss any of the following with their advisees: career plans, extracurricular activities, academic goals, and areas of interest, previous coursework, and time remaining for complete a desired degree program.&nbsp;

The Alliance community is invited to an evening of creativity, music, and culinary delights at the upcoming "Lotus &amp; Lanterns: A Serpent’s Glow" Art Gala on March 27, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alliance High School Common's area of the Performing Arts Center.&nbsp;

The event will showcase student artwork alongside live performances by the jazz band and choir, creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere. Guests can also enjoy hors d’oeuvres crafted by the school’s Culinary classes as they explore the artistic talent on display.

Early in the morning on March 18, 2025, at approximately 1:10A.M. Officer Hanson and Sergeant Young witnessed a fight occurring in front of a bar on the 100 block of Main Street. Officers attempted to intervene to break up the fight and while doing so, a male subject identified as 25-year-old Patrick McLachlan attempted to strike a member of the public with a closed fist and struck officer Hanson in the face. 

McLachlan was placed into handcuffs immediately and the fight was ended. 

Eyewitnesses were interviewed, and as a result of the investigation McLachlan was arrested and transported to the Dawes County Jail without further incident for 3 rd Degree Assault on an officer, a Class IIIA Felony where he was held on a 10% of $25,000 bond. 

Officers also learned of another male subject who had been involved in the fight that was injured during the altercation. 

The Chadron Fire Department was called to the scene and transported the male to the hospital for medical treatment. The injured male was later issued a citation for 3 rd Degree Assault, a Class III Misdemeanor for his involvement in the fight.

Chadron man arrested for assaulting an officer

On Saturday, March 15, 2025, Officer Cafferty and Officer Parrett were called to the 200 block of King Street for a disturbance. When the officers arrived on scene, they began investigating a domestic disturbance, which lead them to a residence on the 300 block of East Third Street.

While at the residence on the 300 block of East Third Street, Officer Cafferty and Officer Parrett, detected the odor of marijuana coming from the residence. The officers applied for and obtained a search warrant to search the residence.

During the search of the residence, the officers located suspected methamphetamine, suspected marijuana, and suspected drug paraphernalia within the residence. There were also two young children inside the residence at the time of the search that lived in the residence.

As a result of the investigation, 25-year-old Karissa Byington was placed under arrest for Possession of Methamphetamine, Child Abuse, Possession of Marijuana 1 oz or less, and Possession of Drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at 10% of $10,000.00. The two children were removed from the residence and placed into the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The Chadron Police Department received assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Department of Health and Human Service on this investigation.

A 15-year-old male from rural Morrill suffered serious injuries as a result of a one-vehicle rollover crash.  

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday March 11, 2025, a witness reported a single vehicle rollover accident on County Road 10 north of County Road H, southeast of Morrill NE.

Investigation revealed that a 15-year-old male from rural Morrill was the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, a 2006 Dodge Durango.  The vehicle was northbound on County Road 10 when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to cross the center line and exit the roadway where it struck a power pole, breaking it approximately 8 feet off the ground, and then rolled several times before coming to rest on the passenger side.

The Mitchell Police Department, a Scotts Bluff National Monument Ranger, and Roosevelt Public Power District assisted at the scene.The Sheriff’s Office is forwarding reports to the County Attorney’s office for consideration of prosecution for Careless Driving, No Seatbelt, No Valid Registration, and Misuse of Learner's Permit.
