University of Nebraska Interim President Chris Kabourek&nbsp;announced Thursday that he has appointed Dennis Leblanc, executive associate AD for academics, to serve as interim athletic director.

Leblanc has been with Husker Athletics for more than 40 years, having joined in 1983 as a member of the track and field staff. He has served in his current role since 2015. Under his leadership, Nebraska has achieved a record-high 95 percent Graduation Success Rate, ranking Nebraska second among 110 public FBS schools. Nebraska student-athletes’ cumulative 3.370 GPA last spring was the highest ever recorded. Nearly 4,000 Husker student-athletes have earned their degrees during Leblanc’s tenure.

“Dennis loves Nebraska, he cares deeply about the young women and men in our program, and he has a proven record of supporting their academic success,” Kabourek said. “Dennis and I are completely aligned on our vision for Nebraska to compete at the highest levels on the field, on the court and in the classroom. He will provide exactly the steady hand and trusted voice that we need during this interim period. I am so grateful to Dennis and Coreen for answering this call to serve and I know Husker Athletics will be in exceptionally capable hands under his leadership.”

An Alliance woman who allegedly stabbed an intimate partner in July of 2023 and faces attempted murder charges and had her pretrial hearing on Wednesday.&nbsp; 29-year-old Becca Ashing was in court where court documents from Box Butte County District Court indicate that the State of Nebraska filed a Motion in Limine and a Motion to Endorse Witnesses. 

Box Butte County District Clerk Kevin Horn explains to Panhandle Post that&nbsp;Limine means testimony not allowed by the Judge and endorse witnesses is basically adding people to an already established witness list.&nbsp;

The court decided that the motions will be heard on Monday March 18th.

Ashing faces one count of Attempted First Degree Murder, a Class II Felony. Other charges include Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony, a Class IIA Felony, and Domestic Assault in the 2nd degree, a Class IIA Felony in the stabbing of Cody Daul on July 13. 2023.

Her trial is slated for April 15th – 17th.

Attorney General Hilgers and State Treasurer Briese Warn Nebraskans about Tax-Related Scams

STATEWIDE-&nbsp;Over 150 volunteers will be mobilizing in communities across the state on Saturday to continue fighting for medical cannabis access. Supporters are hosting over 50 petition signing events in over 30 cities and towns on Saturday, March 16th. They are calling the event “Shamrock Signing Saturday”.

NMM is leading the effort to place two statutory medical cannabis initiatives on the ballot before voters this November. Nebraska families and patients with severe and debilitating illnesses called on state lawmakers to enact a compassionate cannabis policy for over ten years before they decided to go to the ballot. The campaign collected more than enough signatures in 2020, but were later tossed from the ballot after a legal challenge. In 2022, the death of their financial backers forced them to run a fully grassroots campaign where they came up 8,000 signatures short.

Alliance, March 13th, 2024 – At 06:49 on March 13th, 2024, the Alliance Police Department received a report of a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of 8th and Laramie Ave. The first officer arrived on the scene at 06:53, followed shortly by EMS personnel from the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department, who responded with two ambulances and one fire engine, at 06:57. 

The incident involved a collision between a silver 2008 Cadillac DTS and a parked red 2015 Cadillac Escalade. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the silver Cadillac DTS was accompanied by three juvenile passengers in the vehicle. 

The silver Cadillac DTS was headed eastbound on 8th street near the intersection of Laramie Ave. The driver was distracted when they struck a parked vehicle on the South side of 8th St. The driver, aged 30, reported knee pain from impacting the steering wheel. Additionally, some of the juvenile passengers complained of minor injuries, with one child, aged 12, experiencing head and back pain. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel from the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department promptly attended to the injured individuals on scene, providing immediate medical assistance and assessment. 

At the request of the driver, all parties involved in the silver Cadillac DTS were transported to Box Butte General Hospital for minor injuries and to be checked out. The damaged silver Cadillac DTS was towed away from the scene due to disabling damage.

The Alliance Police Department reminds all motorists to exercise caution and diligence while driving, particularly in residential areas. The rapid response of emergency services underscores the commitment of our community to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. Car accident leaves injuries in Alliance on Wednesday

Chadron, NE., March 13, 2024 — The Pine Ridge Ranger District is offering a sharp-tailed grouse viewing blind that is free for the public to use. This will allow visitors the opportunity to witness the amazing courtship dances of the sharp-tailed-grouse. The viewing blind will be open to the public beginning Saturday, March 16, and will remain available throughout the mating season.

Every spring, male sharp-tailed grouse perform a mating “dance” to attract females. The areas where the birds perform this ritual is called a lek - the same lek site can be used for decades. The dances typically begin while it is mostly dark and continue for an hour or more after sunrise. The blind offers visitors near-by photo and observation opportunities as the grouse perform their lively spring courtship displays.

“The blind is located on the Pine Ridge Ranger District, off Job Corps Bypass Road, at a lek site that has been active for over a decade,” says Wildlife Biologist, Jacqueline Dailey. “Each year, this lek has had anywhere from 10-20 males dancing and competing for the female’s attention, it’s quite a spectacular sight!”

Visitors must arrive at least 30 minutes prior to sunrise, as this is when the birds are most active. Dailey cautions that the grouse may not display and disperse for extended periods of time if viewers are late to the blind. “Please plan to stay quietly seated in the blind for at least an hour after sunrise so as not to disturb the mating ritual,” said Dailey. The blind was constructed in 2016 by a Veterans Crew

from the Student Conservation Association. The SCA’s training program aims to assist returning veterans transitioning to civilian life and prepare for careers in conservation. Featuring numerous small viewing windows, the blind offers opportunities to observe and photograph birds in their natural habitat. 

With space for up to four adults, the blind is equipped with two adult chairs and one child chair, is unheated, and has an open sod floor. Visitors are encouraged to bring camp chairs, snacks, water, blankets for cooler weather, a flashlight, binoculars, and a camera for capturing this seasonal spectacle.

Feeding America: "In the United States, people waste 80 million tons of food every year, which equals 149 billion meals. They throw away over $444 billion worth of food annually. Shockingly, they waste 38% of all the food in America."

When food is wasted, all the resources that went into producing, processing, distributing, and preparing that food are wasted too.

Spoilage can occur at every stage of food production and delivery. Insects, rodents, mold, bacteria all occur on farms, in storage facilities, in transportation, and in food processing facilities.

Retail stores like grocery stores might over-order or have to throw away damaged packages or blemished produce. Restaurants face the same problems.

Consumers buy and cook more than they need. Food spoils. We order more than we can eat at restaurants. Unused, uneaten food usually goes in the garbage.

Recently a friend sent me the spring newsletter from ReFresh Nebraska, the Food Waste Reduction Program. It included the Wasted Food Scale developed by the EPA. The scale talks about different pathways to prevent or manage wasted food.

The best approach to reducing food loss and waste is not to create it in the first place. In economics terms, the demand should determine the supply.

The next preferred pathway is to donate and upcycle food. Food that isn't sold can be donated to feed people. Items like fresh produce and dairy products are redistributed through food pantries or food box distributions. Nonperishables like canned goods are sent to food pantries.

In Alliance, we see lots of donated food at Community Table, the Haven, Extra Helpings Food Pantry, and the Senior Center. Local businesses offer excess food to these places that feed people who are food insecure. Farmers, ranchers, gardeners all offer some of what they produce. Those donations are necessary to allow those organizations to offer meals. Food that has been donated is upcycled into stews, soups, and salads by creative cooks who are donating their time. Extra food may be sent home.

According to ReFresh Nebraska, donating ensures that food and the resources used to produce it are not wasted. When food is donated, it is used for its intended purpose, feeding people.

Other options for extra food include feeding animals and composting to improve our soil.

The EPA says that food is the single largest component taking up space inside US landfills, making up 24 percent of our communities' solid waste. Or we drop in into our garbage disposal and it ends up in the city's sewer system.

The most preferred pathways – prevent wasted food, or donate and upcycle food – offer the most benefits to the environment and to our economy. These pathways prioritize using food for its intended purpose: to nourish people. Let's all work on reducing the amount of food we waste.

Robinson brings a dynamic career history that will inform best practices for economic development in Box Butte County. Her professional journey began as the Marketing Director for the Laramie Chamber Business Alliance (LCBA), a combined Economic Development and Chamber of Commerce non-profit in Laramie, Wyoming. 

Subsequently, she served as the Senior Social Media Coordinator at Buckle, based at their headquarters in Kearney, Nebraska. Most recently, Robinson focused on business development and proposal coordination in Los Angeles, California.

Excited to return to her hometown of Alliance, Robinson is eager to apply her varied professional experiences and diverse view of economic and business development. She expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I am thrilled to bring my passion for making connections and building communities to this position. I look forward to helping businesses in the region thrive and using my unique background in a way that benefits the community I was raised in.”

There will be several hearings at Box Butte County District Court on Wednesday, including for two cases that made headlines last year.

Yadira L Garza has a hearing at 1 pm to decide whether her case will go to trial, she plead not guilty in February on Terroristic Threats and Use of a Firearm to Commit a Felony, both Class C Felonies and Obstruction of Government Operations.

The charges stem from an incident in November when Alliance police responded to a welfare check, where allegedly Garza showed a firearm to officers leading to a hostage situation with a child.

A shelter-in-place was issued, and a standoff ensued before Garza surrendered peacefully to authorities shortly before midnight.&nbsp;

Also on Wednesday, Rebecca Ashing will have a pre-trial conference for her April 15th-17 trial for the alleged stabbing of her then partner Cody Daul. Ashing faces an Attempted First Degree Murder charge among others.

Both hearings will be at the Box Butte County District Courthouse in Alliance at 1 pm.
