At 2:30 this afternoon, there was an armed robbery at Chadron Federal Credit Union.

 Law Enforcement are now searching for the man who is a white male with a trimmed beard and mustache, and an olive green hoodie, olive green cap with a yellow patch on it. 

The suspect last seen on foot fleeing east from the credit union. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Alliance Police Department said in a news release, "The Alliance Police Department is seeking your assistance in identifying an individual who is wanted for armed robbery in Chadron. We have no reason to believe that this individual may be in the Alliance area, however we are in close proximity to Chadron and need to be aware of the situation."

April passed without much moisture. Now, we are seeing May flowers and appreciated showers – at least if they pass through without interrupting graduation ceremonies. April also passed without proper reflection on Arbor Day and planting trees versus how to recycle their marketable products.

Nebraska is the home of Arbor Day and most longtime residents will mention “the largest hand-planted forest” near Halsey in the Sandhills. Yet, my Johnny Appleseed filter always brings to mind the Upper Niobrara White NRD (UNWNRD) based in Chadron. Their team has facilitated the planting of millions of trees since our state formed its Natural Resources Districts in 1972.

I grew up on a tract between a pivot circle and a dryland field. Sand dunes buried our first attempt at a tree row on the west edge. Two nannie goats ate the pine trees amid Rocky Montain junipers to the east and south of the house. Now, those hardy evergreens are fullgrown with a range of other trees added through the years. Pine tree replacements along the driveway started life as the same conservation-grade, bare root variety the UNWNRD has sold.

A couple weeks ago, I learned about our local NRD during an interview with Manager Pat O’Brien and Assistant Manager Lynn Webster. Pat explained that most of the NRD’s get 75-80 percent of the trees from Bessey Nursery at Halsey with the balance of area-specific species from other nurseries. In Chadron, they offer varieties “selected by sustainability in Western Nebraska,” he added, including 15 types of shrubs, 10 deciduous and 10 conifers. “Those can vary a little bit year-to-year.”

Sales reflect demand and federal program options. Of the two, Lynn is the veteran. “When I started in the late ‘90s, we were handling 50-70 thousand (a year),” he recalled. By the mid- to late-2000s there was a push for Continuous CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) that paid landowners to plant trees and thereby create wildlife habitat in addition to other environental benefits. Lynn said the biggest years ranged from 600,000 to more than 700,000 trees, which “put us beyond max capacity.” The program has since become more limited, bringing the current demand down markedly though more than when Lynn arrived: 60-75 thousand trees sold annually.

Preparation starts in mid- to late-October with sales based on nursery inventory and each location’s “spring lifter”, the prospective date trees can be dug out in the spring. Some of the UNWNRD’s trees come from South Dakota and North Dakota. The latter had as much snow as Chadron this past season delaying its “lifter” until April 1. Staff conducts sales locally for the most part, yet has offered a “handplant day” for the past 30 years when they deliver to NRCS offices (such as the Alliance location on 24th Street). The district also stores trees in a cooler until Memorial Day to promote quality as customers pick up orders. However, Pat and Lynn encourage people to get them in the ground as soon as possible to take advantage of cooler weather and moisture.

Lynn highlighted NRD efforts around Nebraska – taking “a lead on good quality seedlings – in a dormant state in the cooler. We’ve worked hard on that quality control.” From Halsey, the new trees are even transported in an enclosed, insulated cooler. Based on the county level, “some conservation districts in surrounding states are a little bit smaller and have a harder time with

quality control. We have quite a few people in (bordering) Fall River County, S.D., that come get them from us,” he added.

An NRD tree may not be a perfect fit for the front yard though the math looks different when planning a shelterbelt. Pat said theirs is a very affordable option at $1.20 a tree, available in increments of five. Lynn commented that there is a cost-share for larger windbreaks which can be a benefit though funds may be limited. A renovation program for older belts helps remove dead and dying trees and other upkeep. “We’re knowledgeable in the area and what we’ve seen be successful,” Lynn said in regard to the NRD’s support of farmers and ranchers. Interagency cooperation benefits everyone. Also located in Chadron, the NRCS “plant a lot – have federal programs and assist with site preparation. We have a great resource with Nebraska Forest Service housed at the same site. They work in our district and region,” Lynn said.

The three offices often address the same federal priorities. Pat said the number one trend in the past decade has been to “go more with pollinator habitat – more move to shrubs . . . clusters, tight thickets.” Also, Ponderosa pines, which had been exhibiting survivability issues when grown bare root are now being raised with a root plug. Now 50-75 percent of these trees live, an encouraging rate that may lead to other species being grown with a plug. Pat said the challenge is the challenge is to explain the trees are still small, not with the six-foot trees with big pots at retail stores

Looking to the near future, Pat said there is an opportunity to educate the public about carbon sequestration. He said trees are excellent at storing greenhouse gases over the long term. Lynn highlighted technology. “Our association hosts a page for the conservation tree program – it has a good representation of what’s grown across the state. We also have a booklet in our office they can take and do some research.”

Alliance library closes due to 'roofing failure' 

Hi friends, welcome back to road trip. This week I had so much fun, my friend Jason Wentworth accompanied me on a trip to Wall Drug, South Dakota.&nbsp;

 We had a great time, a bit of a mishap with a donkey on the way, but many laughs because of it. 

 From Rapid City to Wall, there must be at least a zillion billboards. Ice Cold Free water, and 5 cent coffee. I wish now we had been counting how many there were. Finally with the anticipation they created, we made it to Wall. Now Wall is not very big and it is 90% the Wall Drug Store downtown that takes up most of the main street. It at one time was just the drug store, but it was expanded with the likes of snake oil, to entice people to buy souvenirs. 

If you are the joe tourist type, you will have a blast here. If you're not much for the touristy stores, it won't be your cup of tea.  We were thrilled.

 You walk into one shop that leads to another and another and on it goes. What fun. There is a cafe there that is huge. I had a Bison Burger, that was cooked perfectly with onion rings that were really yummy. Jason had a Fishie and fries he said was just pretty dang good.  Food was great, prices a bit high. Our favorite part was behind the main stores there is an open area full of photo ops, such as in the picture above, Jason on the giant Jack a lope. We took advantage of everything. Too much fun i have to tell you. There also were many different types of zoltar machines . Remember big...the genie in the machine that granted him a wish to be big.  There were several of them, bring your quarters and some ones.   Many photo ops inn the buildings from cowboys, to saloon girls, we ran from a giant dinosaur, and rode a pony that most likely once sat in front of a grocery store. It played bonanza, how could you not ride that bad boy.

We went on from there for a ride thru the Badlands National Park, then down to Wounded Knee. Then back home. Another great trip in the books. A must if you're looking for something different.  See you there!

Road Trip: Wall Drug, South Dakota

The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will be held Monday May 15, 2023. Participants will gather in the parking lot of the Scotts Bluff National Monument beginning at 4:30pm, with the Torch Run starting at 5:30. Cost for registration is $25 and includes a t-shirt. Registration will take place on site.

Runners will travel along historic Old Oregon Trail Road into Gering. The Torch Run will conclude at Legion Park in Gering with a light meal to follow. &nbsp;Participants can run, walk, ride a bicycle, and enjoy the sights along the way. You can choose how much of the route you want to do.

The Torch Run is open to anyone who would like to participate and show your support for Special Olympics.&nbsp;Scottsbluff Public Schools will have participants in the Torch Run from their special education program, as well as the Reconnect Program.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics began in 1981 in Wichita Kansas under the direction of Chief Richard LeMunyon. From that point the Torch Run movement has grown into the single largest public awareness and fund raising group for Special Olympics International. The goal of the Torch Run and all the events that fall under the umbrella of the LETR is to raise public awareness about Special Olympics and to bring about acceptance and inclusion for Special Olympics athletes.

Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run to be held at Scotts Bluff N.M. 

Nebraska Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will be holding a dedication of a "Patriot Marker" at the Nebraska Veteran's Cemetery in Alliance on Sunday, May 14 at 10 a.m.&nbsp;

The Patriot Marker at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery reads:

“Revolutionary War Patriots This marker commemorates the men and women who achieved American independence. These Patriots, believing in the noble cause of liberty, fought valiantly to found a new nation. 1775 – 1783 Presented by Nebraska Society Daughters of the American Revolution in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States.”

&nbsp;The Cemetery is located 3 miles Southeast of Alliance NE on CR 57 (1/4 mile from the Alliance Municipal Airport)

“We currently live in a divided country, and it is our hope that we can come together as a nation in the 250th Anniversary of our country’s founding. Our Revolutionary War patriots lived, fought, and sacrificed for us. We will always remember,” said Nebraska State Regent Marcia K. Shavlik.

In the spring of 1942, the US Army selected 31,489 acres of land outside of Alliance to build an air field. The dry climate and open landscape provided ideal flying conditions. An ample supply of water and affordable land, as well as Alliance’s new power plant, new hospital, and railroad division point were other attractions. By July, four 9,000-foot runways had been completed.

The primary mission of the air field was to train aircrews of C-47 and C-53 transports and CG-4 gliders, along with airborne troops they would carry into battle. The field contained around 775 buildings and housed 12,500 military personnel at its peak in September 1943. The 411th Base Headquarters Squadron, 403rd and 434th Troop Carrier Groups, 326th Glider Infantry, 507th Parachute Infantry, and 878th Airborne Engineers trained here before deployment to the European Theater. Many of the troops who trained on this land participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day.

Veteran troops arrived in June 1945 to train for the expected invasion of Japan. Due to the surrender of the Japanese, the invasion never occurred. The Army Air Field was declared surplus in December 1945. Part of the field was transferred to Alliance for use as an airport.

Sixty-three years later, the City of Alliance donated twenty acres, which had once been used as a troop training field, to the Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs. With funds raised by the local community and startup appropriations from the State of Nebraska, the request for a State Veterans Cemetery was approved. The US Department of Veterans Affairs provided the remaining amount of funds to construct and equip the cemetery.

Ground was broken in October of 2008 to begin construction of Nebraska’s first State Veterans Cemetery. The Cemetery was dedicated and presented to the public on August 13, 2010. The first interment was held January 21, 2011.

An ample supply of water and affordable land, as well as Alliance’s new power plant, new hospital, and railroad division point were other attractions. By July, four 9,000-foot runways had been completed.The primary mission of the air field was to train aircrews of C-47 and C-53 transports and CG-4 gliders, along with airborne troops they would carry into battle. The field contained around 775 buildings and housed 12,500 military personnel at its peak in September 1943. The 411th Base Headquarters Squadron, 403rd and 434th Troop Carrier Groups, 326th Glider Infantry, 507th Parachute Infantry, and 878th Airborne Engineers trained here before deployment to the European Theater. Many of the troops who trained on this land participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day.Veteran troops arrived in June 1945 to train for the expected invasion of Japan. Due to the surrender of the Japanese, the invasion never occurred. The Army Air Field was declared surplus in December 1945. Part of the field was transferred to Alliance for use as an airport.Sixty-three years later, the City of Alliance donated twenty acres, which had once been used as a troop training field, to the Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs. With funds raised by the local community and startup appropriations from the State of Nebraska, the request for a State Veterans Cemetery was approved. The US Department of Veterans Affairs provided the remaining amount of funds to construct and equip the cemetery.Ground was broken in October of 2008 to begin construction of Nebraska’s first State Veterans Cemetery. The Cemetery was dedicated and presented to the public on August 13, 2010. The first interment was held January 21, 2011.<figure>

Panhandle police activity, April 20 - May 3 

The Alliance High School FFA Program was the recipient of a $10,000 grant on behalf of CoBank and WESTCO. The contribution was made as part of CoBank’s Sharing Success program. CoBank is one of WESTCO’s regional cooperative business partners, serving rural America.

The funds will go toward the purchase of a Nelson Pade Clear Flow Aquaponics F5 System, which will be used by FFA students to raise vegetables and fish. This project was targeted by the organization, to expand opportunities offered to the growing number of Alliance FFA Students.

WESTCO President/CEO David Briggs said, “Thank you to CoBank for making this donation possible. Agriculture is a major employer and a way of life in our area. WESTCO is excited to support this project at Alliance High School, which we hope increases participation in the agriculture program and will allow more students the ability to gain hands-on experience.”

The Alliance Community Task Force has a new program coming up that we are really excited about! We will be offering classes for Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By World. Applications are being accepted now, with classes starting in the next month.

Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By World is a series of classes for adults struggling with poverty. Class members will investigate the impact poverty has on them and on our community. Living in chronically unstable conditions or in persistent poverty can make it hard for people to change. Poverty traps people in the tyranny of the moment where the problems they face demand immediate solutions. It can be difficult to see a better future.

If you've spent part of your life struggling to get by in the world, the idea of actually getting ahead might seem out of reach. Even if your story has been filled with setbacks, barriers, and vanishing opportunities, the next chapter can change all that. You have to write that chapter, but you don't have to do it alone.

In a facilitated group setting, Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By World will take participants step by step through a discovery of themselves. It's not just about how each of us got where we are. now. It's also about what comes next to build the life we want.

Some of the things that will be investigated:

· The realities of conditions in our community and how they impact you

· Some of the "hidden rules" for getting ahead

· Skills that give a person confidence to do what it takes to get ahead

· How to build resources and make connections at home and at work

· Ways to deal with change and create stability in your life

We have a trained teacher/ facilitator and child care provider on board for classes on Thursday afternoons at the Masonic Center. They'll meet for 16 weeks, 2 1/2 hours each week. Workbooks will be provided. Because we recognize the value of everyone's time, participants will be paid a stipend of $25 for attending each session; however, payment won't be received until the next class meets.

 </figure>CHADRON – Chadron State College seniors were honored during the annual tradition of Ivy Day in Memorial Hall Friday.Ivy Day Royalty, consisting of Blue Key and Cardinal Key members, were announced. The King is Phillip Soto of Scottsbluff, Neb., and the Queen is Abigail Tidball of Edgemont, S.D. Attendants included Treyvin Schlueter of Ainsworth, Neb., and Kelli Schoch of Columbus, Neb., Joshua Kruse of Gurley, Neb., and Micaiah Vrbka of Brainard, Neb., Sage Konicek of Burwell, Neb., and Lydia Connell of Arnold, Neb., and Ian Papenfus of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Jadelyn Beyer of North Platte, Neb.Winners of the Platinum Eagle, a prestigious award for seniors, were Olivia Bryant&nbsp;of Anselmo, Neb., and Konicek.
