The Hemingford Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) is having the blood drive tomorrow Wednesday, May 10 from 7:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Hemingford Volunteer Fire Department to hold blood drive 

According to a news report, a young man armed with a knife threatened to use it on himself outside the Dawes County Courthouse in Chadron on Tuesday afternoon. The standoff lasted for about 2 hours and ended without injuries. 

Social media reports suggested that the young man had a gun, but he was only armed with a knife. 

Sheriff Karl Dailey talked to the young man from a bench opposite him on a courthouse windowsill for most of the standoff.

The young man grew agitated briefly a few times and spoke with his mother from a distance, but generally remained calm. He took off his shirt at one point and handed over the knife when Sheriff Dailey returned his shirt. 

Dailey and Deputy Lee Sayloune then accompanied him into the courthouse. 

The incident “came to a very happy and satisfactory conclusion,” according to the sheriff. 

Traffic around the courthouse was blocked. 

The City of Chadron and Chadron Police Dispatch Center sent out a text alert asking residents to stay away from the area and to use alternative routes to pick up students from the public schools. 

Those in the courtroom for district court motion day with Judge Travis O'Gorman were told to use the west entrance to leave, but the proceedings continued as normal since the standoff posed no threat to them. 

The young man will likely be kept under observation for 3 days, which is standard procedure in such incidents.

The Nebraska State Patrol, Chadron Police Department and Dawes County Sheriff's Office assisted with this incident.&nbsp;

The situation at the Dawes County Courthouse has been peacefully resolved around 3:30pm. Traffic is now open as this time.

&nbsp; Due to an ongoing situation at the Dawes County Courthouse, law enforcement is asking residents to stay away from the area of the courthouse, and use alternative routes for picking up kids at school and other activities till the situation is resolved. 

Main Street and Chadron Avenue are closed so you will need to use other routes this afternoon.

"Local law enforcement is requesting that families avoid Main Street when school is dismissed," Chadron Public Schools said. "At this time, they have an incident near the Court House that is contained but would appreciate it if the public avoided the area until it is cleared. Thank you."

UPDATE: Chadron police advising community to keep away from courthouse

HOT SPRINGS, SD – The horse missing in Wind Cave National Park since last Tuesday, May 2, was found earlier today walking along Highway 385 near the Wind Cave Canyon Trailhead. &nbsp;

Custer County Dispatch notified the park at 7:55 a.m. of a dropped call from that area. When park rangers responded, they saw the horse. Park personnel led the horse into the park’s maintenance yard where it was soon reunited with its owner. The horse appeared to be in good shape after spending a week in the backcountry.&nbsp;

“We’d like to thank everyone who helped on this search, especially the Custer County Sherriff’s Office, Custer County Search and Rescue, Custer State Park, the South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol and the numerous people who on their own were looking for the horse,” said Park Superintendent Leigh Welling. &nbsp;

The horse, named Finley, was examined at the Fall River Veterinary Clinic and other than dehydration and a slightly scraped up leg is healthy. &nbsp;

“I’ve been searching from sunrise to sunset since his disappearance, and while I have been trying to hold onto hope, after all this time I had begun to fear the worst,” said the horse’s owner, Gin Szagola. “The efforts to find him have been incredible. Just amazing. It has saved his life. I’m just at a loss for words, overwhelmed with relief that he is safe.”&nbsp;

SIDNEY, Neb -&nbsp; Sidney Regional Medical Center (SRMC) Board of Directors approved the construction of a new 21-million-dollar facility and will break ground May 18, 2023, at 1:00pm. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sidney Regional Medical Center’s Long Term Care(LTC) will be held at the hospital’s west facing adjoining property. &nbsp;

SRMC Board Chairman, Bill Pile stated, "This new facility has been a priority since we built the hospital in 2014 and is an important initiative toward our focus of providing the finest quality healthcare to the members in the panhandle of Nebraska. Being able to support this project is very exciting for everyone involved." SRMC has employed the services of Farris Engineering, RDG Planning and Design, and Sampson Construction for the design and construction of the new facility. &nbsp;

RDG Planning and Design (architect) collaborated with the SRMC Long Term Care team and Vetter Senior Living in the design process, focusing on the needs of the residents and improving staff efficiencies. Judy Frerichs, Vice President of Extended Care Services for SRMC and Administrator for SRMC Long Term Care noted, “The new Long Term Care facility is designed with a greater user-friendly layout and supports our mission to provide our residents with the very best care possible. We will continue to have 65 beds, a memory care unit as well as a direct-connecting walkway to the hospital that enhances the health and wellness efforts for our residents.” T&nbsp;

he new facility also features private rooms, an innovative communication system, and stronger safety features” shared Jason Petik, CEO, “The focus of this project was to unite the two facilities, the Hospital with the Long Term Care, and strengthen our continuum of care. CHADRON – Michael Sandstrom, a Chadron High School teacher and Chadron State College alum was the speaker for CSC commencement. He shared advice he said he hoped would help improve the graduates’ relationships and chances for success.

First, he urged the audience to practice gratitude.

“Love and appreciate the people and things in your life that make it rich and rewarding. We all have things big and small that we can show gratitude for,” he said.

In July 2011, after surviving a rollover accident with minor injuries, Sandstrom recalled a moment of intense gratitude during his summer job about a week later.

“I remember listening to a song on an 80-plus degree day and feeling intense gratitude that I still had some work to do on this Earth,” Sandstrom said. “Taking an active look at your life and the people in it will give you a profound sense of peace and calm. That will provide you with the ability to not only enjoy your life more but find more success in your future.”

Secondly, Sandstrom urged graduates to take an active role in planning and envisioning their success including keeping a daily journal with goals.

“You need to be actively moving your life in the direction you want. It is important to remain flexible because life will throw you curveballs and setbacks, but your life will be what you make of it. If you are searching for a specific opportunity, then it is important for you to know the skills, knowledge, and preparation you need to make that dream a reality,” Sandstorm said.

His third point was to find a way to be consistent.

“My high school P.E. teacher told me, ‘You should always go the extra mile because that road is never very busy,’” Sandstrom said. “People can be great in short bursts, but few people are willing to consistently perform for years and decades. There is greatness in being able to consistently perform on the little things. Discipline equals freedom.”

Sandstrom’s final point was for the graduates to have faith in themselves and persevere.

“Success is generally not immediate. Genuine belief in your own abilities and potential will allow you to persevere through hard times,” he said.

In closing, he shared a quote from the film The Count of Monte Cristo about the importance of overcoming inevitable adversity.

“Edmond Dantes gave the following toast. ‘Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment and be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes,’” Sandstrom said.

In total, 10 businesses were inspected. One sold alcohol to a minor for a non-compliance rate of 10 percent. All of the businesses checked the minor’s ID.

The businesses included convenience stores, hotels, restaurants, liquor stores, and bars. Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.

Alcohol compliance checks held in Lincoln County

CHADRON – Dr. Ryan F. Morgan has been named Chadron State College’s Dean of Graduate Studies and the School of Business, Math, and Science, Vice President Jim Powell announced Monday. Dr. Morgan will begin his duties in July.

“Dr. Morgan brings a lot of excellent qualities to Chadron State College,” Powell said. “He has a strong background in teaching, as well as administration, which makes him a great fit for CSC. I am confident he’ll be a good leader for graduate studies and the school of Business, Math, and Science.”

Morgan, an Associate Professor at Tarleton State University, has been the Department Head for Chemistry, Geosciences, and Physics since 2018. He has worked at Tarleton, a member of the Texas A&amp;M System, since 2014, beginning as an Assistant Professor. Prior to accepting the Dean position at CSC, Morgan was named Assistant Provost for Curriculum during the spring semester.

Morgan said he is excited to continue his academic career at CSC.

“Chadron State is well-known for its teaching and the quality of its graduates, and I’m looking forward to continuing that tradition while supporting faculty and staff in their efforts,” Morgan said. “I’m dedicated to rural institutions and I am eager to embody CSC’s mission.”

While at Tarleton State, Morgan supervised six academic programs and worked to promote faculty research and scholarship. He said he created partnerships with key institutions and companies across Texas and Oklahoma that led to record-setting growth and donations. He also reorganized and streamlined a master’s degree program in environmental science that saw its student enrollment double.

Morgan is also committed to creating partnerships with the community and students. He oversaw the Environmental Alliance Garden, which was designed to assist with student food insecurity.

“Our food pantry only had dry goods for students on campus and so we wanted to add fresh fruit and vegetables. Creating the garden was a big step to help in addressing food insecurity, particularly for the first-generation students,” he said.

Morgan, a native of Fenton, Michigan, received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University. He earned a Ph.D. in Geology from Baylor University in 2015.

Chadron Community Hospital Celebrates Hospital and Nurses Week

SIDNEY, Neb - Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a California man following a fatal crash in Cheyenne County.

The crash occurred Friday at approximately 4:40 p.m. MT at the intersection of Link 17J and Old Post Road in Sidney. A trooper was nearby and alerted to the crash by a passerby.

Preliminary investigation shows that a Nissan Maxima was eastbound on Old Post Road when it was struck on the passenger side by a semi that was travelling northbound on Link 17J. Troopers discovered that the semi had run a red light at the intersection and collided with the Nissan.

A passenger in the Nissan, Lori Wiens, 48, of Sidney, was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

The two other occupants of the Nissan, 16-year-old females, were transported to Sidney Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi, Gurjeet Singh, 25, of Fresno, California, was arrested for motor vehicle homicide and willful reckless driving. He was lodged in Cheyenne County Jail.

You will first go by the care centers, they will be outside waiting to see you. Then Down Box Butte to 1st street where the fire truck will turn off, however, make the U Turn and Continue down the Butte slowly, Allo again will be providing bags, and people along this parade route will some give gifts, treats, coupons...ya never know.Go slow so they can approach your car. LINCOLN — The Environmental Protection Agency is currently reviewing a new plan for restoring a Sandhills stream damaged by an unauthorized deluge of sand three years ago.

More than 1.6 million tons of sand and sediment — enough to cover a football field to a depth of about 540 feet — was unleashed when a local rancher, with the help of Cherry County, drained a flooded hay meadow into the Snake River, south of Merriman.

After the county dug a drainage ditch along a county road, rancher Dick Minor extended the ditch an additional 2.5 miles to the spring-fed creek.

The new flow and heavy rains eroded a mountain of sand into the stream, turning a normally narrow waterway into a flat, sandy plain — similar to the Platte River — for about three miles downstream. New sediment was noticed about 30 miles downstream, where the Snake empties into Merritt Reservoir.

The Snake is one of the state’s few trout streams, and it hosts a small number of canoe trips through a remote area of the Sandhills.

Last month, Cherry County approved a contract with Mainelli Wagner &amp; Associates of Lincoln to halt the flow of water into the Snake from the drainage ditch and then to provide a plan, and oversight, of the construction of “detention structures” and replanting of grass and trees.

The three-phase contract calls for spending of $66,900, to be shared by the county and the &nbsp;rancher, as well as an estimate of construction costs.

Both the county and Minor have been cited by the EPA for violating the federal Clean Water Act by not obtaining permission for the discharge into the waterway.

The county and rancher signed an agreement in June 2021 to provide a plan within 60 days to remediate the damage, restore — to the extent possible — the previous flow in the Snake River, and mitigate for “lost river functions.”

But in February 2022, the<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2022/06/06/epa-violation-filed-over-slow-response-to-mitigate-damage-to-sandhills-stream/">&nbsp;EPA issued a “notice of violation”</a>&nbsp;against the two parties for failing to promptly comply with the order.

In November, the&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/new-consultant-hired-to-review-plan-to-mitigate-damage-to-sandhills-stream/">EPA indicated that it had enlisted a contractor</a>&nbsp;“with the expertise” to review a proposed work plan for damage it termed complex and severe.

At that time, an EPA spokesman said the agency hoped to have a work plan soon and would share the plan once approved.

Last week, the spokesman, Ben Washburn, said the agency and consultants it hired are currently reviewing the latest work plan.

When asked what happened to past proposals, Washburn said that the project involves “complicated hydrological issues” and that consultants had to be hired.

The Mainelli group, in a February letter to the county, indicated that it would submit a new work plan by a March 24 deadline, and then have a estimate in late April of construction costs to install pipes and detention structures and conduct other mitigation work.

Cherry County Attorney Eric Scott, when reached by the Examiner, declined to comment other than to say that the county was in full compliance with the EPA’s directives.

Calls to Dick Minor and Martin DeNaeyer, the chairman of the Cherry County Board, were not returned.

In the early morning hours of May 7 Chadron Police Sergeant Patrick Young performed a traffic stop on a vehicle for not having license plates. While contacting the driver, Sergeant Young detected the odor of burning marijuana from the interior of the vehicle. He also noticed a glass marijuana pipe inside the vehicle.

Sgt. Young conducted a search of the vehicle, which resulted in locating various forms of drug paraphernalia including 5.5 grams of suspected marijuana, two glass pipes suspected of being used for ingesting methamphetamine, and residue amounts of suspected methamphetamine.

The driver, 34-year-old Nicolas King, was armed with a handgun at the time of the traffic stop. 

King was subsequently arrested for Possession of methamphetamine, a Class IV felony, Possession of a firearm while committing a felony, a Class II Felony, Possession of drug paraphernalia and Possession of marijuana, both infractions. 

A female passenger was also issued a citation for possession of marijuana.

Chadron man arrested on methamphetamine, weapon charges

Runners – and walkers – across the state still have time to register for the annual Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial Run set for May 20, 2023, at Cody Park in North Platte.

The annual race is aimed at raising awareness and understanding of mental health and is a fundraiser for Nebraska Game and Parks state park trails.

The race on Cody Park’s flat course begins at 8:30 a.m. Central time, with race-day registration and packet pickup from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. at the park pavilion.

Those choosing to do the run virtually must register by 4 p.m. Central time May 19 and may complete their race anytime between May 19-21.

The run is organized by the Platte River Fitness Series with support by West Central District Health Department. Proceeds are donated to the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation for the creation, maintenance or upgrade of trails at the 76 state park areas.

This year, funds raised from the race will help support the construction and upgrade of the Smith Falls State Park trail and walkway that leads to Nebraska’s highest waterfall. Improvements are aimed at replacing the aging wooden walkway with a more durable composite decking with steel framing. The new walkway will be Americans with Disabilities Act compliant.

Neb. Game and Parks: Still time to register for Memorial Run

WASHINGTON D.C - Every day, events around the world, such as the recent outbreak of violence in Sudan, emphasize how fragile peace can be. As an internal power struggle between rival military leaders erupted into lethal clashes, American diplomats have been evacuated and hundreds of thousands of refugees have been displaced. Sadly, this – along with the ongoing war in Ukraine – brings into sharp focus the importance and challenge of achieving security through peaceful means on the international stage.&nbsp;

I was encouraged by my recent meeting with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen. There is strong bipartisan support across the U.S. government for ensuring longstanding freedom and security in Taiwan, as well as their role in regional security, and I thank Speaker McCarthy for spearheading the meeting.&nbsp;

Security, both in East Asia and around the world, relies heavily on effective cooperation among friends and allies. I was pleased to attend South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s address to a joint session of Congress on April 27. His calls to increase cooperation, stand up to the forces of totalitarianism, and shed light on the humanitarian crisis in North Korea were met with bipartisan applause. The threat of nuclear aggression from multiple adversaries including North Korea, China, Russia, and Iran has never been greater, which makes clear the need for the United States to stand up for freedom from a position of strength and resolve.&nbsp;

I’m pleased the House is acting in a strategic and bipartisan way to address the ongoing threat posed by China. In the House Ways and Means Committee, we are partnering with the Select Committee on China, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and other committees to put forward a strong domestic and foreign policy agenda. Recently, the House passed a resolution calling on China to release American Mark Swidan who has been held by the Chinese Communist Party since 2012 and was sentenced to death in 2019 under unjust charges.&nbsp;

The House also passed a bipartisan resolution to block President Biden’s moratorium on solar panels imported from several Southeast Asian countries through companies owned by China. The Senate has since passed this resolution as well. I am disappointed the president has refused to support it.&nbsp;

Supply chain issues are integral to homeland security and combatting China, especially when it comes to energy, and American energy dominance remains one of my number top concerns in Congress. As the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Trade, I see enormous potential for the U.S. and other nations to step up and fill many of the gaps left by rogue states. This is why we must be proactive to strengthen ties and trade relationships as we build our own domestic manufacturing capabilities.&nbsp;

As we think about our allies around the world, we cannot ignore one of our most important relationships – our partnership with Israel. The House recently passed a resolution commemorating May 14, 2023, as the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel and affirming support for the advancement in Middle Eastern regional security achieved by the historic Abraham Accords. Mediated by the Trump administration, the accords were ratified September 15, 2020, and signed as a commitment to strengthen peace and prosperity between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. We have no greater friend to freedom in the Middle East than Israel, and we must make our support clear to those who wish to destroy them.&nbsp;

While recent actions by our adversaries and antagonists of our allies have raised serious concerns, promoting global security is of critical importance. Armed conflict and the use of nuclear weapons is an outcome we must work hard to prevent. Through determined leadership, global security can be advanced as we strengthen freedom around the world through robust support for our allies and like-minded nations. It’s more important than ever the United States to unite with our allies in support of freedom around the world.&nbsp;

In&nbsp;May&nbsp;we celebrate&nbsp;Renewable Fuels Month&nbsp;and&nbsp;highlight the importance of biofuels. Nebraska farmers and ranchers fuel the world through the production of biofuels like ethanol. Our state is the second largest producer of ethanol, representing 2.3 billion gallons per year. Nebraska’s 24 ethanol plants boost our state’s economy by $5.7&nbsp;billion per year. E15, gasoline with ethanol blends of 10.5%-15%, is a win for Nebraska and a win for our country. It saves drivers money, is good for the environment, and creates jobs here in America.

First, especially as high costs of living continue to cost Nebraska families, ethanol saves consumers money at the pump. One study showed consumers have been able to save up to 30 cents a gallon during the summer months, leading to total savings of $84 million in gasoline costs. These savings will only increase as more stations offer higher blends like E15 through the summer months.

Second, ethanol helps clean our environment. According to the USDA, ethanol&nbsp;<a href="https://ethanol.nebraska.gov/impact/environment/" target="_blank">reduces greenhouse gas emissions</a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.energy.gov/eere/bioenergy/articles/ethanol-vs-petroleum-based-fuel-carbon-emissions" target="_blank">52%</a>&nbsp;compared to gasoline. E15 reduces emissions of particulate matter by 18%, carbon monoxide by 17%, and NOx by 3% compared to E10. The use of ethanol blended fuels led to a reduction of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ricketts.senate.gov/press-releases/ricketts-highlights-economic-benefit-of-ethanol-blended-fuels-risk-of-prioritizing-electric-vehicles/" target="_blank">nearly 1 billion metric tons</a>&nbsp;of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions between 2008 and 2020.

Third, ethanol creates jobs here in America and promotes our energy security. In addition to the 1,400 jobs directly created by Nebraska’s 24 ethanol plants, ethanol production generates demand for locally grown corn and increases the price farmers are paid for their harvest.&nbsp;<a href="https://renewablefuels.sharepoint.com/Pub/Forms/AllItems.aspx?ga=1&amp;id=%2FPub%2FResearch%2FEcon%2FState%20One%2DPagers%2F2023%20State%20Infographics%2F2023%20States%2DPDF%2F2023%20Infographic%5FNE%2Epdf&amp;parent=%2FPub%2FResearch%2FEcon%2FState%20One%2DPagers%2F2023%20State%20Infographics%2F2023%20States%2DPDF" target="_blank">Forty-six percent</a>&nbsp;of corn grown in Nebraska is used to make ethanol, and one study estimated that farmers in the immediate vicinity of ethanol facilities received about 21.3 cents more per bushel for their corn.

Ethanol also promotes our domestic energy security. The use of ethanol reduced crude oil imports by over 600 million barrels in 2022. Without biofuels, America would be more heavily reliant on foreign energy sources.&nbsp;<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20221101183238/https:/governor.nebraska.gov/press/leading-way-cleaner-more-affordable-american-made-fuel" target="_blank">There’s no reason</a>&nbsp;why the United States should be reliant on authoritarian regimes like Iran, Russia, and Venezuela for fuel when we have home-grown solutions in our own Heartland.

Despite&nbsp;all these benefits, regulatory uncertainty has prevented the year-round sale of E15 from becoming permanent. Thankfully, the EPA&nbsp;<a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-issues-emergency-fuel-waiver-e15-sales-0#:~:text=EPA's%20emergency%20fuel%20waiver%20will,statutory%20maximum%20of%2020%20days." target="_blank">recently announced</a>&nbsp;an emergency waiver that will allow for the nationwide sale of E15 during the 2023 summer driving season. They also approved a request I made with other Midwestern governors last year to allow for the&nbsp;sale of E15&nbsp;in several states&nbsp;during the summer of 2024. These recent announcements are good news, but our producers deserve a more permanent solution than bureaucratic waivers. That’s why I proudly co-sponsored&nbsp;Senator Deb Fischer’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/_cache/files/f884cd05-8768-4c35-8c86-d60d3854f5fe/consumer-and-fuel-retailer-choice-act-of-2023.pdf" target="_blank">Consumer Fuel Retailer Choice Act</a>. This bipartisan, bicameral bill would eliminate the need for waivers by allowing year-round, nationwide sale of higher ethanol blends like E15.
