Americans are often sorted into three economic classes: poverty, middle class, and wealth. Last week we looked at how certain Americans gained wealth. Today we are discussing the rise of the middle class. In future articles we will compare behaviors, hidden rules, and language of each economic class to better understand the barriers unintentionally created for people who live in poverty.

Most people in America lived in poverty until World War II. We also had an upper class of super rich. How did we gradually move from the poverty v. wealth divide to create a large middle class?

Early Americans were primarily involved in agriculture. The New England states had small farms. Larger farms existed in the middle and western states, and large plantations were established in the South. In the northern states and cities, we found lots of craftsmen operating small businesses.

After the Civil War, Congress passed the Morrill Act, which allowed people to move to places like Nebraska and become landowners. Farms were usually a quarter section, and working the land wasn’t easy. The Morrill Act and the later Kincaid Act offered new opportunities for many.

Congress also passed the Morrill Land Grant Act, which created public universities. College had been available only to children of the wealthy, but was now offered to thousands more young people. Educated men and women entered the working world as managers, bookkeepers, and clerical workers. Or maybe they trained to become doctors, teachers, or lawyers. America developed public schools that all children could attend through at least grade 8, and later high schools were available to everyone. Education was the largest reason for the growth in the middle class.

By the late 1800s the United States’ industrial output and GDP were growing faster than that of any other country in the world. Small-scale craftsmen were replaced by large-scale production in factories during the industrial revolution.

The industrial revolution brought new jobs in cities and mass immigration. From 1865 to 1918, 27.5 million immigrants poured into the United States, looking for the opportunities afforded by the nation’s economic successes. Generally, these immigrants lived in poverty. Since most people in a community struggled economically, they didn’t really think about themselves being poor in comparison to others. Everyone worked to survive and to get ahead. Everyone expected their children to have better, easier lives than they had.

The labor movement grew out of the need to protect the common interests of workers, especially for safer working conditions and wage increases. Organizations like the railroad unions or brotherhoods, the Knights of Labor, and the American Federation of Labor were

formed in the late 1800s. Unions gained more power with legislation passed during FDR’s New Deal.

Before 1913, federal government revenues came mainly from taxes on goods—tariffs on imported products and excise taxes on items like whiskey. The burden of these regressive taxes fell heavily on working Americans, who spent a much higher percentage of their income on goods than rich people did. In 1909 we passed the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, allowing the government to collect income taxes. Income tax was progressive, paid by Americans earning more than $50,000. In the 1920s and 30s average wages were less than $1500 a year, $25 a week for men, $18 for women for a 48-hour work week. Wages increased during World War II, and by the 1950s we had more people living a middle-class lifestyle than were living in poverty.

The advent of reliable birth control in the 1960s meant that women had the option of limiting family size and joining the labor force. This provided another opportunity to increase family income.

With more earnings, Americans had more money to spend on consumer goods and on leisure activities. Department stores and catalogs were developed in the late 1800s, and people could now purchase things that they formerly would have made at home. This created even more jobs in manufacturing and in retail. A whole new sector provided entertainment and more jobs.

The years from the end of World War II into the 1970s were ones of substantial economic growth and broadly shared prosperity. But in the 1980s this began to change as our tax structure changed and labor unions were weakened. Now we are seeing a decline in the number of people in the middle class and an increase of those in poverty.

On June 9, the Alliance Poverty Task Force will host a Bridges Out of Poverty program, the Community Lens. Our goal is to improve the lives of low-wage workers and those in poverty, to make Box Butte County an area where everyone can do well.

Poverty In Our Area: Middle class

The Nebraska Legislature has reached a critical juncture.&nbsp; In the coming weeks, Senators will make important votes on a budget that will shape the future of our state. &nbsp;

On March 11th, the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee released its amendments to my proposed budget.&nbsp; This week, Senators will begin debating what to do with billions of taxpayer dollars. &nbsp;Specifically, they will decide whether surplus State revenues should be used for more government spending or returned to Nebraskans through tax relief.&nbsp; This extra revenue isn’t my money as Governor.&nbsp; It’s not the Legislature’s money.&nbsp; It’s the people’s money.&nbsp;

As the Legislature enters this pivotal stretch, here is a rundown of my budget priorities.

The State’s financial health depends on responsible stewardship of tax revenues.&nbsp; During my administration, we’ve passed four budgets that have limited average annual spending growth to around 2.5%.&nbsp; Every year after we pass a budget, special interest groups lobby the Legislature for more money.&nbsp; Senators need to say “no” to wasteful spending and remain focused on the people’s priorities.&nbsp;

Thanks to Nebraskans’ hard work, our state has achieved strong growth, and State revenues have been much stronger than anticipated. &nbsp;After last month’s revised revenue forecast, we’re now expected to increase tax receipts by $1.6 billion more than anticipated at the end of the 2021 Legislative session.&nbsp; That represents a nearly 17% increase in our revenue forecast for this biennium.&nbsp; &nbsp;When revenues exceed what we need to operate state government, we have an obligation to give this money back to the people.

The budget put forward by the Appropriations Committee last Friday allows the Legislature to aggressively pursue this relief.&nbsp; I’m calling on Senators to pass three main tax bills.

Replacing the Nebraska State Penitentiary

Senators must fully authorize construction for a modern facility to replace the aging State Penitentiary.&nbsp; The current penitentiary has outlived its usefulness.&nbsp; The existing State Penitentiary has poor sightlines that pose a security risk for our Corrections Officers.&nbsp; Its utilities are unreliable.&nbsp; It is too outdated to provide the modern programming inmates need to successfully re-enter society.&nbsp; The longer the delay, the more costly a new construction project will become—and the more issues we’ll have at the current penitentiary for inmates and officers alike.

Colorado is moving full steam ahead on nearly $10 billion of water projects in the South Platte River Basin. &nbsp;This threatens to drastically reduce water flows Nebraskans currently depend on for drinking water, agricultural irrigation, power generation, and the health of our natural environment. &nbsp;The good news is that Nebraska has a compact with Colorado that guarantees us certain amounts of water throughout the year.&nbsp; However, Nebraska’s entitlement is contingent on building a canal and reservoir system—known as the Perkins County Canal—along the South Platte River.&nbsp; Until we build the canal, Colorado is not obligated to send us a single drop of water from the South Platte River during nearly half of the year.&nbsp;

I’ve recommended for the Legislature to fully fund the canal with an allocation of $500 million this year.&nbsp; The Appropriations Committee has included $53.5 million in its budget proposal.&nbsp; This amount will provide for the design, permitting, and land acquisition to get the project moving.&nbsp; I urge Senators to fully approve these pre-construction costs, and to allocate additional funds to construct the canal.

Keeping a Check on Taxpayer Dollars

The Appropriations Committee removed language from my budget recommendation to prevent public funds from being used to research, adopt, or implement state sex education standards for Nebraska’s kids.

Last year’s efforts to implement sex education standards show that this concept is highly controversial among Nebraska’s parents.&nbsp; Parents don’t want their children being inundated with non-scientific, political ideas on sensitive topics that go beyond appropriate health education.&nbsp; It’s inappropriate to use their tax dollars on the development of these agenda-driven standards.&nbsp; There are far better, less divisive educational enhancements this money could go towards.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Senator Albrecht has proposed an amendment to the budget that would add this language back in.&nbsp; I encourage Senators to adopt this amendment as they finalize the budget.

 <li>LB 723&nbsp;protects the income tax rebate Nebraskans receive for school property tax payments.&nbsp; For the 2021 tax year, the rebate is over 25%. &nbsp;Without action from Senators, the rebate is scheduled to decline in 2024.&nbsp; LB 723 would make this property tax relief permanent.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>LB 825&nbsp;accelerates our phaseout of taxes on Social Security income from ten years to five years.&nbsp; This will help our seniors in the face of rising inflation.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>LB 939&nbsp;makes Nebraska’s income tax structure more competitive with neighboring states.&nbsp; Just last month, Iowa passed legislation to lower their top individual income tax rate to 3.9%.&nbsp; With this change, our rate of 6.84% is now an outlier in the region.&nbsp; South Dakota and Wyoming have no state income tax.&nbsp; Colorado has a flat rate of 4.55%.&nbsp; Kansas and Missouri have income tax rates that top out at 5.7% and 5.4%, respectively. &nbsp;Without action from the Unicameral, our top tax bracket—which includes 60% of Nebraska’s families—will be 20% more than any surrounding state.&nbsp; Given our workforce needs, we can’t afford to have Nebraska’s graduates move across state lines to take advantage of a more favorable tax climate. &nbsp;The Legislature must act this session to cut income taxes.</li>

(AP)-Delivery company DoorDash says it will refund its drivers for some U.S. gasoline purchases to help offset higher prices. 

DoorDash said it will give drivers 10% cash back when they buy gas using DasherDirect, a debit card that's designed for drivers. The San Francisco-based company said it will also start paying weekly bonuses for drivers who drive the most miles. 

Gig companies are increasingly concerned about the impact of higher gas prices on their drivers. Earlier this week, Uber said it would start charging customers a fuel fee to offset higher costs for its delivery and ride-hailing drivers.

DoorDash paying back drivers to offset high gas prices

Chadron - On December 15, 2021 the motor of the heating element in the Aquatic Centers integrated HVAC/Dehumidification system failed. 

City staff contacted the city’s on-call Trane service technician for support, and after inspection the technician ordered a replacement motor from the manufacturer. 

City staff immediately began implementing improvised measures in an attempt to continue to provide service to our customers. 

The make-shift solutions that staff has been able to make have not restored the HVAC system to normal operation.

 When the outdoor temperature falls below 45°, it is very difficult to maintain the normal indoor operating temperature in the center; and, because of the humidity in the facility, it can feel cold, sometimes very cold. 

Throughout this difficult situation the staff has been able to maintain normal water temperature. Many of our regular users tell us that once they are in the water, the experience is good. 

The city’s staff has worked far beyond normal expectations throughout this crisis in an effort to maintain a decent customer experience; we have not always succeeded and for that, we apologize. 

The large majority of our customers have been incredibly understanding and supportive – it is the Chadron way. 

We are all hoping we receive the parts as promised in the month of May and along with them a return to normalcy.

City staff contacted the city’s on-call Trane service technician for support, and after inspection the technician ordered a replacement motor from the manufacturer. City staff immediately began implementing improvised measures in an attempt to continue to provide service to our customers. The make-shift solutions that staff has been able to make have not restored the HVAC system to normal operation. When the outdoor temperature falls below 45°, it is very difficult to maintain the normal indoor operating temperature in the center; and, because of the humidity in the facility, it can feel cold, sometimes very cold. Throughout this difficult situation the staff has been able to maintain normal water temperature. Many of our regular users tell us that once they are in the water, the experience is good. The city’s staff has worked far beyond normal expectations throughout this crisis in an effort to maintain a decent customer experience; we have not always succeeded and for that, we apologize. The large majority of our customers have been incredibly understanding and supportive – it is the Chadron way. We are all hoping we receive the parts as promised in the month of May and along with them a return to normalcy.

For South Dakota, the Asset and Infrastructure Review report recommends building a new VA health system in Rapid City, while closing the Wagner clinic and the the Fort Meade hospital.

CSC to host Chadron Schools Instrumental Program spring concert

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp; — A busy week of basketball in Lincoln was coupled with a busy week on Nebraska roads as teams and fans from across the state traveled for the NSAA State Basketball Tournaments. This year, both the boys and girls tournaments were held during the same week.

During the week of the state tournaments, Nebraska State Troopers patrolled high-traffic roadways to assist teams and fans travel safely. Throughout the week, troopers performed 278 motorist assists across the state.

“This was a week like we’ve never seen for state basketball,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Congratulations&nbsp;to all the champions, participants, and organizers of this incredible week of basketball.”

The effort also included high-visibility enforcement through the state. Troopers arrested 12 people for driving under the influence and issued citations for speeding (273), no seat belt (9), improper child restraint (2), open alcohol container (10), minor in possession of alcohol (4), driving under suspension (30), and no proof of insurance (14).

This effort was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $15,635 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office (NDOT-HSO). Troopers also provided seat belt and safe-driving demonstrations to thousands of fans throughout the week at the NDOT-HSO booth at Pinnacle Bank Area.

Troopers stay busy during State Basketball

Anyone interested in walleye fishing at Lake McConaughy is invited to a public informational meeting March 29 at the lake, where the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will discuss fisheries research, changes in stocking and angler surveys.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. Mountain time at the Lake McConaughy Visitor Center. This session will provide a chance for questions, dialogue and feedback.

Game and Parks’ recent meetings at the lake with anglers and concessionaires focused on the agency’s 2022 walleye plan for the lake. Those plans include a nighttime creel survey for April and May to evaluate walleye fishing along the dam during the spawn period.

Additionally, plans include stocking 22 million recently hatched walleye in the North Platte River above the lake and in the river-lake interface. There also are plans to stock 1.5 million walleye that are 1.25- to 1.5-inches in length), and a small portion of those will be raised and stocked at a larger 2-2.5-inch size. These stockings will be evaluated to determine which size had most success.

Game and Parks has initiated efforts to establish an advisory group of stakeholders – consisting of local anglers, businesses and guides – to keep lake visitors updated on Lake McConaughy fisheries management and research and to better inform visitors of angling opportunities.

Weather conditions lead to enhanced fire risk for southwest, central Nebraska

Keep Alliance Beautiful (KAB) was recently declined for funding by the Nebraska Environmental Trust (NET). This funding, which KAB had been receiving on an annual basis for over a decade, has been used to help keep the organization operational. 

 KAB was expecting $95,342 in funding from NET this year.

KAB was founded in 1982. The organization's goal is to encourage people to "reduce, reuse, and recycle every day to improve and beautify their community environment."

"The past 10 years we received complete full funding for what we asked for," KAB Executive Director Kathy Worley said during an interview on KCOW Radio. "We have our narrative down, we tweak it every year for the different projects that we're doing, and that sort of thing and the amount of money that we're asking for. But really, it's been the same thing. The differences are, the director of NET is is no longer there. They have a new director appointed; they have five new board members on their board. And so that is something that is significantly different for us. And not only did they not fund Keep Alliance Beautiful, there were several that didn't get funding either. They left $7 to $10 million on the table that they want to roll over for next year...with no answering of, what do you intend to do with that $10 million? "

Worley traveled to Lincoln to attend the NET public hearing and asked them why KAB failed in their application process.

"You do count on that money, our resources are limited, you know, in what we can qualify for," Worley said. "NET has always been a great fit for us and they've just championed everything we do. They've come out here to visit our recycling center, they've come to our office, they've come to our important meetings, someone is always represented and like I said, we've been absolutely championed by NET in the past for what we're doing out here."

The question remains: How will KAB move forward without this funding?

"We're looking into other grant opportunities and fundraising ideas, Worley said. "We have deadline dates to meet. We have to then, therefore wait. We're trying to leave no stone unturned right now. We applied for this grant [NET] in November, I believe, of last year...to find out, right now,  that we're not going to be getting it. We were hopeful. And I went again, as I said to the to NET's hearing to be heard, but I was not heard. I really was the only one who came and showed up to speak on behalf of those who didn't get funded. I think that people are afraid of hurting their chances for being funded in the future. They [NET] don't even do you the courtesy of looking at you, they're really skilled at looking off and not at you, and not answering any questions. It was not a pleasant experience, but I don't regret that I went."

Worley said KAB will also be asking the community for monetary donations.

"We're going to start a GoFundMe page and a GiveSendGo page," Worley said. "Those are both reputable sites. And we want to be accountable for all the dollars that are given to us, as we have been with the trust."

Worley said the recycling operation in Alliance is small, but they reach many people throughout the Panhandle and beyond.

"We have people coming from Grant County, Sioux County and Dawes County," Worley said. "We had somebody come from Colorado with recycling. We're reaching a lot of people. A lot of people from those areas are bringing their recycling to Alliance."

Worley said KAB will keep providing services and keep moving forward.

"We're just in a period of being uncomfortable, so we will find solutions," Worley said. "It's our every intent to keep services going as they are and improve them."

Keep Alliance Beautiful faces future without NET funding

On March 11 at approximately 9 a.m. the Dawes County Sheriff's Office and EMS personnel were called to the Crawford Elementary School for a rescue call to 55-year-old Diane Reynoldson.&nbsp;

Reynoldson was working at the school during spring break. She wasn't responding to phone calls.&nbsp;

A concerned family member went to the school and found her on the floor. Reynoldson was unresponsive.&nbsp;

EMS transported her to Chadron Community Hospital and was unable to revive her.&nbsp;

"After a review of the scene and witness interviews including medical personnel, the preliminary investigation does not indicate foul play," Dawes County Attorney/Coroner Vance Haug said. "An autopsy and toxicological screening have been ordered to assist in determining the specific cause of death."

CHADRON – Chadron State College students recently competed at the Rocky Mountain Regional Conference Model Arab League (MAL). According to Assistant Professor Dr. Justin Curtis, this was CSC’s first time attending and participating at the Rocky Mountain Regional Conference.

Every school in attendance represented a particular member state in the League of Arab States and CSC represented Qatar. The team of Michael Anderson&nbsp;of Montello, Wisc., Laura Clay of Colorado Springs, Colo., Andrew Corbine&nbsp;of Box Elder, S.D., Hend Elnady of Cairo, Wyatt Fiscus&nbsp;of Bayard, Neb., and Eric Pollack of Alliance, Neb., received a mark of Distinguished for their representation of Qatar.

Anderson and Pollack served on the Joint Defense Council, Corbine and Elnady served on the Council of Social Affairs Ministers, and Clay and Fiscus served on the Political Affairs Council. Anderson and Pollack and Corbine and Elnady were recognized by their peers as Outstanding, the highest mark a delegation can receive, in their respective councils’ evaluations.

The CSC team has been formally invited to participate in the 2022 National Model Arab League Conference in Washington, D.C.

Curtis said each council was assigned an agenda of topics related to their issue areas.

“For instance, the Joint Defense Council discussed asymmetric wars and the use of drones in combat. The Council of Social Affairs Ministers debated systems for protecting migrant workers and ways to protect journalists in sensitive areas, and the Political Affairs Council evaluated economic stimulus programs from the COVID-19 pandemic and ways to improve electoral integrity in the Arab world,” Curtis said.

Curtis said the primary goal of each council was to facilitate diplomacy and simulate complex decision-making processes with overlapping and competing interests. Participants also evaluated their peers’ performance on dimensions that included issue knowledge, public speaking, and writing.

Since the Political Science minor is new at CSC, Curtis said students who attended the conference represented other disciplines in all three academic schools. Last year, Curtis and his students competed virtually in the Great Plains Regional Conference and had planned to attend it in-person this year, but the date conflicted with other plans.

Hend, a junior majoring in Criminal Justice, said she enjoyed participating in MAL for the second time.

“I think learning about Middle Eastern politics or international politics, in general, is such a powerful tool in understanding the world and making better decisions. The conference this year was very well-organized, and I was lucky to have Andrew (Corbine) as my co-delegate,” Hend said. “I also had the opportunity to meet many people who are passionate about making the world a better place for everyone.”

Pollock is a history major whose main career goal is to eventually work at a National Park.

“This event is something I believe a lot of students could enjoy and succeed in,” Pollock said.

Corbine, a Social Work senior, said the conference was an amazing experience.

“I enjoyed learning about Middle Eastern politics and simulating international diplomacy.&nbsp;I’m extremely proud of our team’s preparation and execution at the conference which earned us an invitation from BYU to go alongside their team to nationals in Washington DC,” Corbine said. “We are truly blessed to have Dr. Curtis here at CSC. I will never forget the passion and dedication he brought to campus for civics and social sciences, as these opportunities for enrichment and inspiration were not possible without him. I look forward to reciprocating that passion on campus and abroad.”

Anderson is majoring in Rangeland Management-Wildlife. He said more students should attend conferences and competitions.

“I believe students should develop knowledge in a broad sense to become better equipped to confront future challenges that are yet unforeseen. I plan on continuing to attend similar events as opportunities arise, in order to push the boundaries of my own comfort zone and develop new skills,” Anderson said.

Clay, a Legal Studies major, will graduate in May. She hopes to become a paralegal and is interested in possibly working for the State Department or another government agency.

“I learned a lot more about how diplomacy works and it has me excited to continue learning about Middle Eastern politics. If I have an opportunity to participate in similar conferences in the future, I plan on doing it. It's a great opportunity to learn about other countries and work with others to create solutions,” Clay said. “Dr. Curtis deserves all the credit. He ensured our team was prepared and ready to go.”

Fiscus is an Education Major with an endorsement in Social Sciences. His career goal is to become a middle school or high school educator.

“Compromise is certainly a major aspect of being able to succeed in Model Arab League, as well as in real life legislation crafting,” Fiscus said.

Curtis said students on the team embraced the idea that politics anywhere affects politics everywhere.

“While the substantive focus of Model Arab League is, obviously, international politics in the Middle East, the skills and insights that students practice and develop in the program—including leadership, diplomacy, problem-solving, public speaking, writing, research, and collaboration—are valuable in a variety of scenarios,” Curtis said. “The program has clearly demonstrated its capacity to excel, and we will plan early to attend both the Rocky Mountain Conference and the National Conference in 2023.”

The Council of Social Affairs Ministers debated systems for protecting migrant workers and ways to protect journalists in sensitive areas, and the Political Affairs Council evaluated economic stimulus programs from the COVID-19 pandemic and ways to improve electoral integrity in the Arab world,” Curtis said.Curtis said the primary goal of each council was to facilitate diplomacy and simulate complex decision-making processes with overlapping and competing interests. Participants also evaluated their peers’ performance on dimensions that included issue knowledge, public speaking, and writing.Since the Political Science minor is new at CSC, Curtis said students who attended the conference represented other disciplines in all three academic schools. Last year, Curtis and his students competed virtually in the Great Plains Regional Conference and had planned to attend it in-person this year, but the date conflicted with other plans.Hend, a junior majoring in Criminal Justice, said she enjoyed participating in MAL for the second time.“I think learning about Middle Eastern politics or international politics, in general, is such a powerful tool in understanding the world and making better decisions. The conference this year was very well-organized, and I was lucky to have Andrew (Corbine) as my co-delegate,” Hend said. “I also had the opportunity to meet many people who are passionate about making the world a better place for everyone.”Pollock is a history major whose main career goal is to eventually work at a National Park.“This event is something I believe a lot of students could enjoy and succeed in,” Pollock said.Corbine, a Social Work senior, said the conference was an amazing experience.“I enjoyed learning about Middle Eastern politics and simulating international diplomacy.&nbsp;I’m extremely proud of our team’s preparation and execution at the conference which earned us an invitation from BYU to go alongside their team to nationals in Washington DC,” Corbine said. “We are truly blessed to have Dr. Curtis here at CSC. I will never forget the passion and dedication he brought to campus for civics and social sciences, as these opportunities for enrichment and inspiration were not possible without him. I look forward to reciprocating that passion on campus and abroad.”Anderson is majoring in Rangeland Management-Wildlife. He said more students should attend conferences and competitions.“I believe students should develop knowledge in a broad sense to become better equipped to confront future challenges that are yet unforeseen. I plan on continuing to attend similar events as opportunities arise, in order to push the boundaries of my own comfort zone and develop new skills,” Anderson said.Clay, a Legal Studies major, will graduate in May. She hopes to become a paralegal and is interested in possibly working for the State Department or another government agency.“I learned a lot more about how diplomacy works and it has me excited to continue learning about Middle Eastern politics. If I have an opportunity to participate in similar conferences in the future, I plan on doing it. It's a great opportunity to learn about other countries and work with others to create solutions,” Clay said. “Dr. Curtis deserves all the credit. He ensured our team was prepared and ready to go.”Fiscus is an Education Major with an endorsement in Social Sciences. His career goal is to become a middle school or high school educator.“Compromise is certainly a major aspect of being able to succeed in Model Arab League, as well as in real life legislation crafting,” Fiscus said.Curtis said students on the team embraced the idea that politics anywhere affects politics everywhere.“While the substantive focus of Model Arab League is, obviously, international politics in the Middle East, the skills and insights that students practice and develop in the program—including leadership, diplomacy, problem-solving, public speaking, writing, research, and collaboration—are valuable in a variety of scenarios,” Curtis said. “The program has clearly demonstrated its capacity to excel, and we will plan early to attend both the Rocky Mountain Conference and the National Conference in 2023.”

Columbus, Neb. – Residents around the state may soon see a helicopter or Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) trucks and UTVs near powerlines as crews begin their annual Spring inspection of the transmission system. 

NPPD wants residents to be aware of this process, which involves looking at every component on every transmission structure, across the state, over the next couple of months. 

“This allows us to identify any parts or equipment on the transmission system that might need replaced or repaired,” notes NPPD Transmission Manager Bob Blessin. “By doing that, we can avoid outages that would have otherwise occurred, reduce costs by being proactive with maintenance, and improve the overall reliability of the system throughout the year.” 

Helicopter patrols will take place around the western portion of the state during the first half of March and the southeastern portion of the state during the second half of March. After those two areas have been patrolled, the helicopter will inspect lines in northeast Nebraska around the beginning of April before moving through central Nebraska to inspect any remaining lines.

 Crews in all areas of the state are starting to inspect these lines from the ground, and will be completing their patrols over the next couple of months.

	Evidence shows that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and
	stroke – obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes – negatively
	impact your cognitive health. Take care of your heart, and your
	brain just might follow.

	Brain injury can raise your risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
	Wear a seatbelt, use a helmet when playing contact sports or riding
	a bike, and take steps to prevent falls.

	Eat a healthy and balanced diet that is lower in fat and higher in
	vegetables and fruit to help reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
	Although research on diet and cognitive function is limited, certain

	Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to risk reduction.

	Not getting enough sleep due to conditions like insomnia or sleep
	apnea may result in problems with memory and thinking.

	Some studies link a history of depression with increased risk of

	depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns. Also, try to
	manage stress.

Lately my teenager has been fascinated by medical dramas. Although my “doctor self” is usually rolling my eyes throughout the program, it’s often a good conversation starter.

One recent show featured a pregnant woman who experienced one medical crisis after another. Her kidneys, liver, and lungs failed in succession as the team raced to identify the underlying obstetrical problem and find a treatment. At the climax of the episode, her heart stopped. Of course, being television, the correct diagnosis was made, the experimental treatment worked, and the episode ended with a perfectly healthy mother at home, holding her perfectly healthy baby.

For all the erroneous and outrageous details that transform bad fictional medicine into good TV, they did get something right. Pregnancy is a dangerous condition. In fact, in America, pregnancy complications account for approximately two percent of all deaths among women between the ages of 20 and 44.

To put the two percent into perspective, consider that pregnancy complications can only happen in the months during and immediately following pregnancy. On average a woman in the United States will birth between one and two children. This means that between the ages of 20 and 44, the risk of pregnancy-related death isn’t spread across those 25 years as are the risks of cancer or car accidents. It is concentrated into the relatively few months during which she is pregnant. And for women younger than 20 and older than 44 the risk of pregnancy complications is even greater but, statistically speaking, women in those age groups simply don’t have enough babies to categorize pregnancy complications as a major cause of death.

Consider also that death by violence is not counted as a pregnancy complication, even though pregnancy is a significant trigger for violence.

What’s more, consider that these risks are not distributed equally between women. Socioeconomic status, education, physical location, and race all impact the likelihood of pregnancy complications, and death from those complications.

Issues that affect pregnant people affect their whole family. In medical school, I was taught “nothing is worse for a fetus than a dead mother.” It’s hard to disagree.

So, what can we do to make pregnancy safer? The answer to that question is multi-faceted. Access to quality obstetric care is one factor. However, we must also ensure women are as healthy as possible before they conceive. They need good nutrition and safe places to live and work. They need education to know what is normal, and what is not. They and their families need access to psychiatric care to address mental illness and addiction.

It may not make for good TV, but in the real world, the starting place is as basic, and as difficult, as that.
