Enhanced fire danger in central, western Nebraska Saturday

The Chadron Rotary Club is donating $2,500 to support Ukrainian civilians in their home country and those who have fled. Individual club members are contributing to this cause by donating to Rotary International’s mobilization for Ukrainian civilian and refugee support. Club members are asking local residents to support this worthwhile cause. Any amount will make a difference in the lives of Ukrainians during this crisis. Chadron Rotary Club provides opportunity to support Ukraine

On March 17 Chadron Police Officer Colin Deines and Sergeant Chelsey Stolley responded to a 911 call to a residence in Regency Trailer Court.

 After arriving at the residence, Officer Deines and Sgt. Stolley made contact with a female who had been assaulted and was bleeding from the head. 

The female informed the officers that she had been beaten up and strangled by her boyfriend. 

"Officers obtained statements from both and learned that during the disturbance, a baseball bat and a handsaw were used during the apparent assault," Chadron Police Chief Rick Hickstein said. "Due to both individuals having injuries, both the male and female were transported to Chadron Community Hospital to receive treatment for their injuries."

37-year-old Conrad Randall was arrested on&nbsp;charges of Strangulation (Class IIIA felony), Domestic Assault 2nd Degree (Class IIIA felony) and an active Sheridan County warrant. 

Bond was set at 10% of $50,000 for the felony charges, and 10% of $10,000 for the Sheridan County warrant.

Randall was booked into the Dawes County Jail.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is&nbsp;<a href="https://dhhs.ne.gov/Flu%20Documents/Report.pdf" target="_blank">reporting&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;higher levels of flu and flu-related cases in Nebraska. The State is experiencing increased positive cases, school absenteeism, hospital visits, and hospitalizations. A total of 13 Nebraskans have died from influenza-associated illness so far this season.

As flu activity is currently elevated throughout the state, it is important to remind Nebraskans that the flu vaccine is the best protection against flu-related illnesses, missed work or school, and flu-related hospitalizations.

“The good news of declining COVID-19 cases is giving us some much-needed optimism," said Dr. Matthew Donahue, State Epidemiologist for DHHS. “As influenza cases increase, it is important for Nebraskans to consider proven tools, like the flu vaccine and flu antivirals, to keep themselves and their families safe from sickness, hospitalizations, and death."

The most effective defense against this illness is the flu vaccine. The vaccine is safe and rigorously tested. The most common reaction people may experience from the shot is soreness and redness at the injection site. After vaccination, it takes about two weeks for the body to build immunity. Nebraskans can safely get a flu vaccine at many locations throughout the State.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vaccines.gov/" target="_blank">Vaccines.gov&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;is also a resource for finding flu vaccines near you.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends flu vaccines for everyone 6 months and older every year. Certain people are at high risk for serious complications, and it's extremely important they receive the vaccine:&nbsp;&nbsp;

In addition, antiviral drugs are also an effective way to treat the flu. Early treatment with antivirals can reduce symptoms, shorten the amount of time you are sick, reduce the risk of serious flu complications, and potentially decrease additional spread of the virus. Antivirals currently&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fda.gov/drugs/information-drug-class/influenza-flu-antiviral-drugs-and-related-information#AntiviralMedications" target="_blank">approved&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;are: Rapivab (peramivir), Relenza (zanamivir), Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate, also available as generic), and Xofluza (baloxavir marboxil).

Firefighters continue to battle the fire near Wellfleet.&nbsp;

According to Lincoln County Emergency Management, the fire remains zero percent contained and firefighters are holding the perimeter at roughly 900 acres.

Officials are also warning the most of the area will be under an extreme fire risk this weekend.

Firefighters and aircraft are still working the approximately 900-acre Votaw Road Wildfire in Lincoln County. 

Extreme fire weather danger and possible red flag warnings are expected through the weekend. 

Please be cautious of emergency personnel if travelling through the area.

Crews are still working to contain the wildfire burning southeast of North Platte near Wellfleet. National Guard helicopters have been dispatched to provide bucket drops. 

Fire is still at zero percent containment with over 1,000 acres burnt. Please continue to avoid the area.

Officials said the fire near the Highway 23 and 83 junction has already burned over 1,000 acres and was zero percent contained early Wednesday afternoon.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A prosecutor says a little-known Republican congressman from Nebraska lied to federal authorities about illegal campaign contributions from a Nigerian-born billionaire.

Weekend brings increasing fire weather concerns to western, north-central Nebraska

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp; — Don’t leave roadway safety up to luck. The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) will be patrolling for impaired drivers on St. Patrick’s Day.

NSP&nbsp;and many other law enforcement agencies across the state are urging everyone to have a sober driver on this St. Patrick’s Day. This campaign runs on March 17 and includes troopers and dispatchers from across Nebraska.

“Drunk driving is dangerous for everyone on the road, not simply the impaired driver,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Take chance out of the equation and plan ahead for St. Patrick’s Day. If you’re celebrating, choose a designated driver or another means to have a sober driver get you home.”

Nationally, nearly 300 lives were lost in drunk-driving crashes on St. Patrick’s Day from 2016-2020. In 2020, one in every three fatal crashes in Nebraska involved alcohol, according to statistics from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office (NDOT-HSO)

This effort is made possible thanks in part to a grant for $11,800 from NDOT-HSO.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Potential jurors are being questioned about their political views and possible bias against the FBI in the trial of a little-known Republican congressman from Nebraska who’s accused of lying to federal authorities about illegal campaign contributions. 

U.S. District Court Judge Stanley Blumenfeld is asking possible jurors if their views on politics or law enforcement could skew their assessment of the charges or witnesses.

City of Alliance reminds residents about phone scam

PAXTON, Neb.-The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating after a three-vehicle crash left multiple people injured and three cattle dead.&nbsp; 

According to the patrol, just before 8:00 pm CT Wednesday, troopers were alerted to a crash that involved a wrong-way vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-80 near mile marker 145.

 Upon arrival, troopers found that the vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, had collided with two semi-trucks in the eastbound lanes.

The drivers of all three vehicles were transported by ambulance to Great Plains Health in North Platte. The driver of the Tahoe and one of the semi drivers were later flown to UNMC in Omaha for further treatment. Those injuries are described as serious. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

One of the semi-trucks was hauling cattle, three of which died as a result of the crash. The other semi was hauling potatoes. 

I-80 eastbound was closed for about three hours during the response and clean-up. 

Assisting agencies were Paxton Fire, Sutherland Fire, Ogallala Fire, Keith County Sheriff's Office, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, NDOT, Regional West Ambulance, Amy's Towing, Steve's Towing, and Ogallala Livestock Market. 

The crash remains under investigation.

Dan Kling, conservation officer for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, said the two boys walked along the dam to the swim beach area and onto the ice. Both fell through the ice and climbed to the top numerous times, eventually staying in one place and crying for help. Adults accompanying them called 911 just before 5 p.m. Less than an hour later, the boys were rescued by members of the Minatare Fire, Rescue and Dive Team, and taken by ambulance to Regional West Medical Center, treated and released.

Other agencies assisting at the scene were the Nebraska State Patrol, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Valley Ambulance Service and Air Link Helicopter Service.

Kling said visitors to lakes and reservoirs in the region should use extreme caution as nearly all remaining ice is thin and dangerous.
