Hikers seeking a challenge will find what they’re looking for on these five Nebraska trails.

Along several, hundreds of feet of elevation changes will test your hiking stamina, but scenic views make it worth the climb to the top. Other trails take time to complete or offer minimal protection from the elements.

Whichever trail you choose, you’ll get to enjoy the beauty of scenic Nebraska – along with the satisfaction of tackling a challenge.

Prepare for some steep climbs, as well as beautiful views, at Indian Cave State Park’s Trail 10. As you ascend from the river bottoms to the top of the river bluffs, you’ll climb a couple of hundred feet in elevation. Stick it out, and you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views of the Missouri River.

Beginning in Norfolk and spanning 321 miles west to Chadron, the Cowboy Trail is one of the largest rails-to-trails projects in the United States. The trail is developed between Norfolk and Valentine, consisting of 187 miles of crushed limestone surfacing.

The trail itself isn’t difficult, but with little wind or shade cover, hikers are exposed to the elements. Also, the distance between towns makes for gaps in shelter. Take this challenge to see a variety of Nebraska landscapes.

Mexican Canyon Trail through Spring Creek Loop Trail, Fort Robinson State Park

Want to see the views from the top of the buttes at Fort Robinson State Park? Then take this 12-mile hike along Mexican Canyon Trail through Spring Creek Loop Trail. You’ll face an elevation change of 500 feet, but also get to see views of the Red Cloud buttes, as well as Carter P. Johnson Lake and most of the Soldier Creek area.

Fantastic views are in store for hikers at Fort Robinson’s Red Cloud Loop. The 500-foot change in elevation takes hikers to the top of buttes overlooking the fort complex and the town of Crawford. This route also offers your best chance to see the wildlife of Fort Robinson, along with some of the park’s best views.

Remember to stay safe when using these trails: Dress for the weather, bring water, tell a friend where you’re going, and hike with a buddy.

5 challenges for Nebraska hikers including Dawes, Sheridan Co. trails

CHADRON – Chadron State College&nbsp;faculty members Dr. Kurt Kinbacher, Dr. Mary Clai Jones, Markus Jones, and CSC student Jace Demeranville presented the final Graves Lecture of the year Nov. 15 about their cross country bicycling class.

The group presented Crossing the Continent on Two Wheels: The Speed Goat Chronicles about their 70-day journey bicycling from Chadron to Washington D.C., then riding a train from D.C. to Seattle, and bicycling from Seattle back to Chadron.

“There is power in really long, epic journeys and I have to say that by bike scale, this is epic,” Kinbacher said.

Markus Jones described how he got involved in the early stages of the trip.

“I started riding with Kurt and he's kind of hardcore. So, when he proposed this idea, I said yes, not thinking we would ever do it. And then we did. Somehow, one day after another, you cross the country,” he said.

The group narrated photos of their journey, state by state.

“I enjoyed Nebraska. In terms of the whole trip, it was a great introduction to what the rest of my summer was going to be like. Especially the last day really showed us what Iowa was going to be like,” Demeranville said.

Much of the trip involved biking uphill, despite expectations to the contrary.

“Jace and I counted; it was an average of seven to 10 hills per mile in Iowa. Our third highest climbing day was in Iowa,” Mary Clai Jones said.

Kinbacher described riding through Amish country in Ohio.

“It was amazingly quiet. No leaf blowers, no tractors. A lot of horses and buggies, a lot of electric bikes. Riding through the countryside was just serene. It's not something you usually experience,” he said.

Markus Jones shared how he and Kinbacher visited monuments in Washington D.C. and explored the National Mall.

“You're among all these people and covered in mud. You have everything you carry with you on your bicycle, and nobody really cares,” Markus Jones said.

From D.C., the group took a train west to Washington state and biked the final segment east to Chadron. In total, the group biked through 12 states.

“When you cross the state border, it’s different. If you ride up to Wyoming or into a different state, it feels different. Every state had its own character,” Kinbacher said

Mary Clai Jones said the trip challenged her as a bicyclist.

“The longest ride I had ever done before this trip was 50 miles, and on day three we did 87 miles. I think I did it just to see if I could,” she said.

Demeranville shared a few reasons for going on the trip, including his education.

“I did it for a few reasons, mostly because I thought it was cool and I had nothing better to do in the summer, and it also let me get capstone credit with the coolest class that Chadron’s ever offered,” he said.

Speed Goats share stories in Chadron Graves Lecture

LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) is proud to announce the promotion of Captain Jeff Roby to the position of Western Operations Major, as well as the promotion of Captain Jeff Wilcynski to the position of Eastern Operations Major.

The two promotions follow the previous retirement of Major Mike Jahnke and the upcoming retirement of Major Brenda Konfrst, who will retire this month after a 32-year career with NSP.

“These two proven leaders are a tremendous asset for our team,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Major Roby and Major Wilcynski each possess valuable leadership abilities and carry extensive experience in several areas of NSP operations.”

Roby began his career with NSP in 1996, stationed in North Platte. He has served in the Patrol Division, Carrier Enforcement, SWAT, and Training Academy. He was promoted to Captain and NSP Director of Training in 2018 and has most recently served as commander of Troop C.

“I am honored to lead the troopers, investigators, and professional staff who serve today in the area where I began my NSP career,” said Major Roby. “Western Nebraska is truly a special place, and our team remains committed to maintaining the safety of those communities and the roadways from McCook to Chadron and everywhere in between.”

Wilcynski began his career with NSP in 1995, stationed in Ainsworth. His career has included time in the Patrol Division, Investigative Services, and SWAT. He has most recently served as the commander of the Office of Professional Standards, which includes Internal Affairs, Executive Protection, Policy and Accreditation, Legal, and Information Governance.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“From the Omaha metro to rural parts of Northeast Nebraska, our NSP team in the eastern part of the state serves with pride and a genuine commitment to public safety,” said Major Wilcynski. “I’m eager to join that team, support them in our constant public safety mission, and work together to keep Nebraskans and our visitors safe.”

Both Roby and Wilcynski are graduates of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety of Police Staff and Command.

The Chadron Police Department is announcing their participation in the upcoming Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign event this holiday season, occurring between December 16, 2022 and January 1, 2023

Impaired Driving is dangerous and carries with it many penalties, not the least of which could include fines, jail time, and legal fees. The Chadron Police Department encourages all members of the public to celebrate this holiday season safely and to find a sober driver if anyone opts to celebrate by consuming alcohol. According to NHTSA, every day about 32 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes, which comes out to one person every 45 minutes. In 2020, 11,654 people in the US died from drunk driving crashes. Those deaths were all preventable.

This year between December 16 and January 1, the Chadron Police Department, through grant money provided by the NDOT, will increase the number of officers patrolling at any given time. Those officers will be able to focus on searching for drunk and impaired drivers. Remember, drive sober, or get pulled over.

SCOTTSBLUFF -&nbsp;The Western Community College Area (WCCA) Board of Governors, the governing body for&nbsp;Western Nebraska Community College, has begun the search for the next president of WNCC.&nbsp;Interim President John Marrin is set to retire on June 30, 2022.

The Board has selected Pauly Group, Inc. a national search consulting firm, to assist with the presidential search process.

Dr. Angela Provart, president of Pauly Group, will be on the Scottsbluff Campus Dec. 7 and visit the Alliance and Sidney campuses Dec. 8 to begin building a Presidential Profile that will assist the firm in identifying qualities, characteristics, and qualifications needed in the next WNCC president. Provart will lead several open forums for the community and campus stakeholders to discuss opportunities and challenges facing WNCC.&nbsp;The public is encouraged to attend the community forums.

The Scottsbluff Campus community forum is on Dec. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the John N. Harms Center. The public can also attend this meeting virtually via go.wncc.edu/CommunityForum.

Dr. Provart will host a community forum on the Alliance Campus, Thursday, Dec. 8 from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. before traveling to the Sidney Campus to host an additional community forum from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

If members of the community are unable to attend an open forum in person or via Zoom, WNCC encourages all to fill out a survey at go.wncc.edu/PresidentSurvey to help gather more information from the entire service area. The survey will remain open until noon on Sunday, Dec. 13.

WNCC launching search for next president, hosting community forums

Preliminary Nebraska deer check-in numbers indicate 2022 statewide harvest is down 9% compared to 2021 for the November firearm season. During the nine-day season, which was Nov. 12-20, 33,866 deer were harvested, compared to 37,053 in 2021.

While the overall statewide trend was down compared to previous years, regions of the state varied. Deer harvest in southeast Nebraska was up 2% from 2021, while southwest Nebraska was down 15%. The northwest district was down 9% and the northeast district was down 9% from 2021.&nbsp;

Mule deer buck harvest decreased 10%, with 4,875 taken, compared to 5,407 in 2021. Whitetail buck harvest was down 12%, with 18,942 taken compared to 21,070 in 2021. Antlerless mule deer harvest was down 12%, while antlerless white-tailed deer harvest increased 1% compared to 2021.

“There are a couple primary factors in the decline in deer harvest,” said Luke Meduna, big game program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “Considering the increases in antlerless harvest due to depredation complaints over the past few years, it’s not surprising harvest numbers would start trending downward at some point with those deer populations declining. We also took a fair number of reports of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease the last two years, particularly in northern Nebraska and that likely had an impact on whitetail populations.”

Archery season closes Dec. 31, while muzzleloader season is Dec. 1-31. The late antlerless season will run Jan. 1-15, while the River Antlerless late season will run Jan. 1-31.

Hunters are reminded that mule deer does are protected in many management units and public lands across the state. During the nine-day season, which was Nov. 12-20, 33,866 deer were harvested, compared to 37,053 in 2021.While the overall statewide trend was down compared to previous years, regions of the state varied. Deer harvest in southeast Nebraska was up 2% from 2021, while southwest Nebraska was down 15%. CHADRON – Twelve Rural Business Leadership Initiative (RBLI) student teams competed Nov. 10 for four awards of $2,500 that will be used for improvement projects in rural communities.

The winning teams in the pitch competition were Keep Morrill Nebraska Clean, Chadron State College Trail Signage Project, Make More Possible at the Alliance Recreation Center (ARC), and the Valentine River Clean-up.

Dr. Cassandra Ritzen, associate professor in the Business Academy and adviser for RBLI, said the students will soon begin the process of working on details to implement each project, funded by an First National Bank of Omaha&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/2020/rbli-program-gets-boost-from-nebraska-bank.html" target="_blank">grant</a>.

“This was the first year we introduced the Civic Engagement Pitch competition. The students worked in small groups this semester to develop the proposals,” Ritzen said.

Ritzen said a part of the process also involved a community leader workshop in which 15 community leaders came to campus or presented via video conference to engage with the RBLI student teams and give feedback on their ideas.

“The project is designed to help students research the needs in rural communities and understand the opportunities to develop plans for rural communities and the people they strive to serve. The RBLI embodies a commitment to engage students in professional experiences, equip them with leadership skills, and empower them to inspire change in rural areas,” Ritzen said.

24-year-old Jon Mazanec of Alliance will serve 10-15 years in prison for second degree domestic assault with a prior conviction (Class 2A Felony), third degree domestic assault with a prior conviction (Class 3A Felony), and possession of LSD (Class 4 Felony).

Box Butte County District Court Judge Travis O'Gorman credited Mazanec 94 days already served (first count), three years (second count) and one year (third count). He was sentenced on Nov. 23.

According to the Affidavit for Custody, on Aug. 22, Box Butte County Deputy [Tim] Wangler and Chief Deputy [J.D.] Sutphen were dispatched to the 600 Block of Cheyenne Avenue in Hemingford for a verbal disturbance. Upon arriving on scene, Deputies Wangler and Sutphen contacted a female on the porch of the residence that was in pain. Deputy Sutphen asked the female what happened and she stated that gasoline was poured on her and was lit on fire.

According to the Affidavit, Deputy Wangler and Sutphen searched the Hemingford area trying to locate Mazanec. At approximately 2:14 p.m. someone matching the description of Mazanec was seen walking up Cheyenne Avenue carrying a torch. Deputy Wangler caught up with the subject at the garage where the initial incident had occurred. Deputy Wangler asked Mazanec what had went on earlier that day and Mazanec responded that he had a fight with his girlfriend and poured gasoline on her and then lit her on fire.

Deputy Wangler placed Mazanec under arrest and Deputy Sutphen read Miranda Warnings to Mazanec.

Deputy Sutphen asked if Mazanec had anything on his person and Mazanec stated that he had drugs in his pocket. After a pat down search, a plastic baggie was recovered from Mazanec's shorts pocket with suspected LSD tabs in it.

Alliance man sentenced to prison for lighting woman on fire, possession of LSD

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress is moving swiftly to prevent a looming U.S. rail workers strike, reluctantly intervening in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-economy-business-strikes-congress-34e0ccd4b29b55bf8bd3844eb03b5bed">a labor dispute</a>&nbsp;to stop what would surely be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-congress-government-and-politics-79d2e2c2779598b0a14396464ee4f7e9">a devastating blow to the nation’s economy</a>&nbsp;if the transportation of fuel, food and other critical goods were disrupted.

The House was expected to act first on Wednesday after President Joe&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-congress-government-and-politics-44c88740ed57ba96a20c4fc6fffb230b">Biden asked Congress to step in</a>. The bill lawmakers are considering would impose a compromise labor agreement brokered by his administration that was ultimately voted down by four of the 12 unions representing more than 100,000 employees at large freight rail carriers. The unions have threatened to strike if an agreement can’t be reached before a Dec. 9 deadline.

Lawmakers from both parties expressed reservations, but the intervention was particularly difficult for some Democratic lawmakers who have traditionally sought to align themselves with the politically powerful labor unions.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with Democrats, announced that he would object to fast-tracking the president's proposal until he can get a roll-call vote on an amendment that would guarantee seven paid sick days for rail workers. Some of the more liberal lawmakers in the House such as Reps. Jamaal Bowman of New York and Cori Bush of Missouri tweeted that they couldn't support the measure.

Still, the bill was expected to receive a significant bipartisan vote. That show of support began when the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House and Senate met with Biden on Tuesday at the White House.

“We all agreed that we should try to avoid this rail shutdown as soon as possible," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said as he returned to the Capitol.

A letter from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Democratic colleagues promised two votes, reflecting the consternation she was hearing from members. The first vote will be on adopting the tentative labor agreement. The second will be on a measure to add seven days of paid sick leave for railroaders to the agreement.

“It is with great reluctance that we must now move to bypass the standard ratification process for the Tentative Agreement," Pelosi wrote. “However, we must act to prevent a catastrophic strike that would touch the lives of nearly every family: erasing hundreds of thousands of jobs, including union jobs; keeping food and medicine off the shelves; and stopping small businesses from getting their goods to market."

The compromise agreement that was supported by the railroads and a majority of the unions provides for 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses retroactive to 2020 along with one additional paid leave day. The raises would be the biggest rail workers have received in more than four decades. Workers would have to pay a larger share of their health insurance costs, but their premiums would be capped at 15% of the total cost of the insurance plan. But the agreement didn’t resolve workers’ concerns about demanding schedules that make it hard to take a day off and the lack of paid sick time.

Lawmakers from both parties grumbled about stepping into the dispute, but they also said they had little choice.

“The bottom line is we are now forced with this kind of terrible situation where we have to choose between an imperfect deal that has already been negotiated or an economic catastrophe," said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass.

“This is about whether we shut down the railroads of America, which will have extreme negative effects on our economy," said Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 Democrat in the House. “We should have a bipartisan vote."

Republicans needled the Biden administration and Democrats for Congress being asked to step in now to avert an economic crisis. But many indicated they were ready to do so.

“This has got to be tough for Democrats in that they generally kowtow to unions," said Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind.

“At this late hour, it's clear that there is little we can do other than to support the measure," said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla.

Business groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Farm Bureau Federation said earlier this week in a letter to congressional leaders they must be prepared to intervene and that a stoppage of rail service for any duration would represent a $2 billion per day hit to the economy.

On several past occasions, Congress has intervened in labor disputes by enacting legislation to delay or prohibit railway and airline strikes.

Railroad unions on Tuesday decried Biden’s call for Congress to intervene in their contract dispute, saying it undercuts their efforts to address workers’ quality-of-life concerns.

Conductor Gabe Christenson, who is co-chairman of the Railroad Workers United coalition that includes workers from all the rail unions, said Biden and the Democrats are siding with the railroads over workers.

“The 'most labor-friendly president in history’ has proven that he and the Democratic Party are not the friends of labor they have touted themselves to be,” Christenson said.

By Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP) — Congress is moving swiftly to prevent a looming U.S. rail workers strike, reluctantly intervening in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-economy-business-strikes-congress-34e0ccd4b29b55bf8bd3844eb03b5bed">a labor dispute</a>&nbsp;to stop what would surely be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-congress-government-and-politics-79d2e2c2779598b0a14396464ee4f7e9">a devastating blow to the nation’s economy</a>&nbsp;if the transportation of fuel, food and other critical goods were disrupted.The House was expected to act first on Wednesday after President Joe&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-congress-government-and-politics-44c88740ed57ba96a20c4fc6fffb230b">Biden asked Congress to step in</a>. The bill lawmakers are considering would impose a compromise labor agreement brokered by his administration that was ultimately voted down by four of the 12 unions representing more than 100,000 employees at large freight rail carriers. The unions have threatened to strike if an agreement can’t be reached before a Dec. 9 deadline.Lawmakers from both parties expressed reservations, but the intervention was particularly difficult for some Democratic lawmakers who have traditionally sought to align themselves with the politically powerful labor unions.Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with Democrats, announced that he would object to fast-tracking the president's proposal until he can get a roll-call vote on an amendment that would guarantee seven paid sick days for rail workers. Some of the more liberal lawmakers in the House such as Reps. Jamaal Bowman of New York and Cori Bush of Missouri tweeted that they couldn't support the measure.Still, the bill was expected to receive a significant bipartisan vote. That show of support began when the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House and Senate met with Biden on Tuesday at the White House.“We all agreed that we should try to avoid this rail shutdown as soon as possible," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said as he returned to the Capitol.A letter from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Democratic colleagues promised two votes, reflecting the consternation she was hearing from members. The first vote will be on adopting the tentative labor agreement. The second will be on a measure to add seven days of paid sick leave for railroaders to the agreement.“It is with great reluctance that we must now move to bypass the standard ratification process for the Tentative Agreement," Pelosi wrote. “However, we must act to prevent a catastrophic strike that would touch the lives of nearly every family: erasing hundreds of thousands of jobs, including union jobs; keeping food and medicine off the shelves; and stopping small businesses from getting their goods to market."The compromise agreement that was supported by the railroads and a majority of the unions provides for 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses retroactive to 2020 along with one additional paid leave day. The raises would be the biggest rail workers have received in more than four decades. Workers would have to pay a larger share of their health insurance costs, but their premiums would be capped at 15% of the total cost of the insurance plan. But the agreement didn’t resolve workers’ concerns about demanding schedules that make it hard to take a day off and the lack of paid sick time.Lawmakers from both parties grumbled about stepping into the dispute, but they also said they had little choice.“The bottom line is we are now forced with this kind of terrible situation where we have to choose between an imperfect deal that has already been negotiated or an economic catastrophe," said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass.“This is about whether we shut down the railroads of America, which will have extreme negative effects on our economy," said Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 Democrat in the House. “We should have a bipartisan vote."Republicans needled the Biden administration and Democrats for Congress being asked to step in now to avert an economic crisis. But many indicated they were ready to do so.“This has got to be tough for Democrats in that they generally kowtow to unions," said Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind.“At this late hour, it's clear that there is little we can do other than to support the measure," said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla.Business groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Farm Bureau Federation said earlier this week in a letter to congressional leaders they must be prepared to intervene and that a stoppage of rail service for any duration would represent a $2 billion per day hit to the economy.On several past occasions, Congress has intervened in labor disputes by enacting legislation to delay or prohibit railway and airline strikes.Railroad unions on Tuesday decried Biden’s call for Congress to intervene in their contract dispute, saying it undercuts their efforts to address workers’ quality-of-life concerns.Conductor Gabe Christenson, who is co-chairman of the Railroad Workers United coalition that includes workers from all the rail unions, said Biden and the Democrats are siding with the railroads over workers.“The 'most labor-friendly president in history’ has proven that he and the Democratic Party are not the friends of labor they have touted themselves to be,” Christenson said.

This summer Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act. A part of the law makes several changes to Medicare Part D drug benefits.

Starting on Jan. 1, 2023, many more vaccines are free for those on Medicare. Medicare Part B fully covers vaccines for flu, pneumonia, hepatitis B, and COVID. But other vaccines, like shingles, are covered under the Part D prescription drug plans, and how they are covered varies by the insurance company. The plan Earl and I have currently requires a $202 co-pay for each of the two shots in the shingles series. The new law makes shingles and other vaccines free for people with Medicare Part D prescription drug plans if they are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.

Currently, Medicare beneficiaries with serious health conditions can face catastrophic out-of-pocket prescription drug costs. The new law requires Part D plans to strengthen financial protections that will phase in starting in 2024, with a $2,000 out-of-pocket cap taking effect in 2025.

This limit applies to all prescriptions, including out-of-pocket payments for medicines like insulin. If your Part D plan has a prescription drug deductible, that amount will count toward the $2,000 cap. Beginning in 2023, copays for a 30-day supply of any insulin that a Medicare drug plan covers will be capped at $35. Part D plans will be required to adhere to the $35 copay limit even if an enrollee has not met their annual deductible.

In 2024, the year before the out-of-pocket cap takes effect, Medicare beneficiaries will no longer have any out-of-pocket costs once they enter catastrophic coverage. The way Medicare catastrophic coverage works in 2022 is that once an enrollee’s out-of-pocket costs reach $7,050, they have to pay 5 percent of their remaining prescription drug costs, with no maximum limit. In 2024, once someone hits the $7,050 limit, they won’t have to pay anything for their prescription drugs for the rest of the year.

According to the new law, beginning in 2024 and continuing through 2029, Part D premiums cannot increase by more than 6 percent a year. The amount of these premiums varies widely, depending on where you live and what plan you select. In 2022 the national average Part D premium is $33.37 a month.

Medicare has several parts. Medicare Part A is hospital insurance, and it covers inpatient hospital care, hospice, lab tests, and surgery.

Medical insurance is provided by Medicare Part B. This covers doctor and other health care providers' services to diagnose and treat medical conditions. Part B covers durable medical equipment and many preventive services like vaccinations.

Medicare Advantage plans are called Part C and are provided by private companies in large cities. Medicare supplements are Plans F, G, K, L, and N.

There are still several things Medicare does not cover, including long-term care (nursing homes), most dental care, dentures, exams for prescription eyeglasses and hearing aids. For people not lawfully present in the U.S., Medicare won't provide any coverage.

SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB.&nbsp; — Nebraska State Patrol investigators performed alcohol inspections at businesses in Scotts Bluff and Lincoln Counties earlier this month.

During the evening hours of Friday, November 18, investigators conduced alcohol inspections at 12 businesses in Lincoln County. Three of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor, for a compliance rate of 75%. All of the businesses checked the minor’s ID.

The operation was supported in whole or part by grant #93.959 under the SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Region II Human Services, and the Nebraska DHHS Division of Behavioral Health.

During the evening hours of Saturday, November 19, investigators conducted alcohol inspections at 79 businesses in Scotts Bluff County. Five of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor, for a compliance rate of 94%. The five businesses that sold alcohol to a minor also failed to check the minor’s ID.

Alcohol inspections held in Scotts Bluff, Lincoln Counties

Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD) is partnering with area students to spread the word on the dangers of tobacco use of any kind. The campaign features high school athletes from around the region who commit to saying no to the harmful effects of tobacco and how it can affect their performances on and off the field.

A campaign on PPHD’s Facebook page features six athletes from around the Panhandle who are leading the charge in their schools and communities on vowing to not use tobacco or vape products. The athletes highlighted include Jacob Dowser of Sidney, Kierra Miller of Bayard, Avery Davies of Hemingford, Drew Leisy of Bridgeport, McKenna Krueger of Garden County, and Ellis Livingston of Gordon-Rushville. Each of these athletes has a post on the PPHD Facebook page and whichever athlete has the most “likes” on the original post on Facebook by December 9, will receive a $250 scholarship courtesy of PPHD.

As of 2020, 4.2% of Nebraska high school students smoke and 17.1% use e-cigarettes. In the last 2 years alone, vaping increased by 218% among middle schoolers and 135% among high schoolers. Teens who vape are now 3x more likely than non-vapors to become daily cigarette smokers.

Nicotine increases your heart rate, tenses your muscles, and decreases the oxygen to your brain, despite a reputation for 'relieving stress.' In young people, 5 mg of nicotine a day is enough to establish a nicotine addiction.

Young people also face increased instances of anxiety and depression and while it has always been thought that nicotine is a stress reducer, this is a common myth. In a study published by the Journal of American Medical Association, current e-cigarette users have double the odds of having a diagnosis of depression compared to those who have never vaped. Nicotine use in general can increase stress levels.

Students are the target of the tobacco industry and their harmful marketing tactics are creating new generations of tobacco users. By standing up to these tactics, area student athletes have the potential to be great leaders in their communities to help stop other students from becoming lifelong tobacco users.

At Sutherland, the erosion under the Hershey Beach boat ramp has been repaired, and rock riprap has been placed along both sides of the ramp to prevent future erosion from occurring. Other improvements include restoring rock riprap and the walking surface to the breakwater structure, as well as installing lighting in the parking area.

This project was funded through the sale of fishing permits and the Nebraska Game and Parks Aquatic Habitat Fund.

At Enders, improvements were made to the Area A and No Name Bay boat ramps. They include double-lane ramps, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant parking pads, breakwaters to protect the ramps, gravel parking areas, and pull-through access to the ramps. No Name Bay also has a new gravel kayak launch. New lighting likely will be installed at both ramps in 2023.

Docks are not yet in the water at the Enders ramps. A new dock will be installed at the Area A ramp later, and repairs still are being made to the No Name Bay dock. A separate announcement will be made when the docks are in service.

The Enders project was made possible through a United States Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety grant and the Aquatic Habitat Stamp.

Hershey Beach boat ramp at Sutherland, two ramps at Enders to reopen

CHADRON – The Chadron State Foundation celebrated the successful end of its annual Fall Fund Drive Nov. 17 at the Bean Broker. Teams of volunteers from the campus and the community secured pledges from donors during October.

At the event, teams that earned the most points were acknowledged, as well as top performing individuals from campus and the community, according to Brandon Davenport, Development Officer.

“It’s a fun incentive to win bragging rights at the end of the drive, but all our volunteers are motivated by the opportunity to support students at Chadron State. Fundraising can, and should be a lot of fun,” Davenport said.

The total amount raised this year was $191,448.

“Once again, the Chadron State community was incredibly generous in giving to the Fall Fund Drive. The Foundation is very pleased with the results. This year, we set out with a theme of ‘forging future stars’ and the funds raised during this campaign will go a long way toward Chadron State students realizing their full potential. We are fortunate to have donors who are willing to contribute to a quality education and experience for students at CSC. They, along with our many Fall Fund Drive volunteers, should be proud,” Davenport said.

Tena Cook and Taylor Osmotherly were the campus team leaders and Bobby Griese and Lynn Mathis were the community team leaders.

The first-place campus team, chaired by Christine Fullerton, consisted of Laure Sinn, Kate Pope, Tish Mindemann, Nate Doherty, and Andrew Smith. The second-place campus team, chaired by Carrie Sayaloune, was composed of Christopher Singpiel, Michaela Lemke, Lisa Cook, Josee Sayaloune, and Maurice Wyatt. The third-place campus team, chaired by Christian Miller, included Emily Hansen, Lena Aslan, Channing Jons, and Austen Stephens.

The first-place community team, chaired by Jim Gardner, included Janessa Carley, Julie Duncan, Tyler McCarthy, and Angela Martinez. The second-place community team, led by Clayton Riesen, was composed of Angela Harris, Pam Strotheide, and Tammy Davies. The third-place team, chaired by Bobby Griese, was comprised of Tina McLain, Connie Blaylock, Jera Boeslager, and Shane Norman.

Individuals who won awards for the highest number of points earned were Deena Kennell for the campus and Angela Harris for the community.

CSC Foundation Fund Drive ends with celebration

Governor Pete Ricketts, per a request from the White House, announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff to honor Congressman Donald McEachin.

McEachin had represented Virginia’s 4th&nbsp;&nbsp;District in the U.S. House of Representatives since January 2017.&nbsp; He passed away on November 28, 2022, after battling cancer.

Flags will be lowered to half-staff immediately and returned to full-staff tomorrow.&nbsp;
