CHADRON – Chadron State College students in Geoscience courses are able to conduct analysis of solid materials with the college’s first portable X-Ray Fluorescence unit (pXRF) purchased&nbsp;with a grant written by Professor&nbsp;Dr. Mike&nbsp;Leite and Assistant Professor Dr. Tawny Tibbits from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nsf.gov/od/oia/programs/epscor/index.jsp" target="_blank">Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research: a National Science Foundation program</a>&nbsp;(EPSCoR).

“We were fortunate to be awarded the grant through EPSCoR and to be awarded a 20 percent matching grant through the CSC Research Institute,” Tibbits said.

Thanks to the support, the Geoscience program purchased an Olympus Vanta XRF unit.

Tibbits explained that the unit ejects an X-Ray that excites the electrons. The atoms in the material being analyzed emit a specific light. The unit reads and displays the specific light frequencies that correspond to a specific mineral or element.&nbsp;The XRF can produce precise and accurate chemical data in less than a minute.

“Our unit has two different levels of energy which provides a better picture. It lets us see a wider spectrum of elements on the periodic table.&nbsp;It's really good feature to have when you are looking at unknowns,” Tibbits

The unit is safe for students to use because the X-Ray is focused on the object being analyzed and when it is not touching a sample, the unit powers down. Leite and Tibbits also purchased a benchtop stand that has a lead-lined chamber to analyze materials in classroom or lab settings.

Leite took the pXRF unit to Field Camp this summer where&nbsp;Kaitlyn Smith of Hackberry, Arizona,&nbsp;collected rocks and data for her Capstone II course research.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During this academic year, Brady McDaniel of Chadron and Rowdy Pfeil of Moorcroft, Wyoming,&nbsp;will use the pXRF unit to analyze items in CSC collections.

“Rowdy is going to analyze and confirm identifications on our meteorite collection. He's going to make sure our irons are iron and our stony irons are, in fact, stony irons,” Tibbits said. “Brady is going to look through some collections in the museum and make sure we understand a bit more about what we've got and check that we have everything correctly identified.”

Tibbits&nbsp;used a pXRF unit during her dissertation in Belize.&nbsp;

“It was one of the cornerstones of how I was able to analyze granite. Compared to the old method of grinding up the stone,&nbsp;doing&nbsp;all sorts of time consuming and expensive sample prep, and waiting for results from a distant lab, we can now find out data almost instantly and leave the material intact, if needed,” she said. “Within seconds you can get a full chemical output on any solid material. This unit is very accurate.”

Tibbits and Leite have plans to expand use of the pXRF unit, sharing it with faculty and students in the Rangeland program.

“It can produce good results on soil cores and soil samples starting at magnesium and running all the way up through uranium,” Tibbits said.

Chadron State College acquires portable X-Ray Fluorescence unit  

SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB. — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol arrested three people after locating multiple stolen firearms and controlled substances during a traffic stop in Cheyenne County.

The incident occurred Friday at approximately 6:50 a.m. MT when a trooper observed a Nissan Versa speeding as it was traveling westbound on I-80 near Lodgepole. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The driver was also found to have a suspended license.

Troopers performed a search of the vehicle. During the search, the troopers located four handguns, two of which were discovered to be stolen, and a rifle. Troopers also located suspected MDMA pills and a small amount of marijuana.

The driver, Deontre Harris, 27, of Kansas City, Missouri, and passenger Linford Garrett, 21, of Independence, Missouri, were arrested for possession of amphetamines, theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm during a drug violation, possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Passenger Leonard Killebrew, 60, of McKinleyville, California, was arrested for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm during a drug violation, possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. All three were lodged in Cheyenne County Jail.

UPDATE- College Relations apologizes for an inadvertent oversight of two faculty members in the original news story.&nbsp;They are Julian Berrian and Katelyn Lambert.

CHADRON – Twelve new faculty members will join Chadron State College this fall. They are Dr. Janet Anthony,&nbsp;Julian Berrian,&nbsp;Dr. Jami Clifford, Dr. Nathan Favaloro, Jeremiah Downes, Jeremy Quick, Dr. Haesong Kwon, Danielle Covolo,&nbsp;Katelyn Lambert,&nbsp;Dr. Gabriella M. Pruitt Santos, and Matthew Bower. Finally, Dr. Bryan Dorrel will be an Associate Professor in the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department.

In addition to the new faculty, two current Business Academy faculty earned their doctorate degrees this summer. They are Dr. Caitlin Redden and Dr. Daphne Bishop.

Education,&nbsp;Counseling, Psychological Sciences, and Social Work

Anthony is an Associate Professor who will teach 400-level courses in Elementary, Secondary, and Middle School Classroom Management, Human Relations and Secondary/Middle School Assessment. She will also instruct two sections of Intro to Teaching (EDUC 131).

Anthony said she was attracted to Chadron State College by the opportunity to work her dream job as a professor to pre-service teachers.

“Upon visiting Chadron, the first thing I noticed was the size of the campus. It instantly reminded me of my first two years as an undergrad student. The population was small and I made memorable relationships and long-lasting friendships. After meeting and speaking with the Education faculty, I knew I would be working amongst a group of passionate, yet friendly and relatable individuals who love the profession as much as I do,” Anthony said.

She earned a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Capella University, a master’s in Reading and Language Arts with an endorsement for Reading Specialist, and a specialist degree in Administration Leadership from Oakland University. Anthony has a bachelor’s in Community Health Education from Western Michigan University and has conducted special research on the Impact of the Switch from Traditional to Online Learning at Mott Community College.

Clifford is a Lecturer who will remotely teach Introduction to the Exceptional Learner (SPED 230), Microteaching in Early Childhood Education/Elementary/Middle School/Secondary Special Education (SPED 317), Behavior Modification and Management (SPED 331), and Research and Design and Data Analysis (EDCI 631).

She was an adjunct last year and enjoyed working with CSC students.

“Everyone was very helpful and willing to answer any questions I had. The opportunity to work as a remote lecturer was a perfect fit for me," Clifford said.

She earned a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Wyoming, a master’s in Special Education from Northern Arizona University, and a bachelor’s in Elementary and Special Education from Minot State University.

Favaloro is an&nbsp;Assistant Professor teaching Practicum-School Counseling (COUN 602), School Counseling (COUN 635), and Advanced Human Development (COUN 637).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“My biggest attractions to CSC include the work environment and the kindness of faculty members," Favaloro said.

Favaloro earned a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision and a master’s in School Counseling from the University of Holy Cross. He earned a bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of New Orleans.

Communication,&nbsp;Music,&nbsp;Art, and&nbsp;Theatre&nbsp;

Julian Berrian will be an Associate Professor teaching Advanced Video Production (CA 445), Broadcast Production (CA 345), Video Production (CA 245), Audio Production (CA 215), and Public Speaking (CA 155).

He said he was drawn to CSC by the prospect of helping to develop the school's new media production concentration.

“Moreover, I have found Chadron and the surrounding region to be scenic as well as conducive to a good quality of life,” he said.

Berrian earned a Master of Fine Arts from Temple University and a bachelor’s from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Downes is an Instructor teaching Principles of Acting (TH 134), Acting for Musical Theatre (TH 355), Voice Lessons for Musical Theatre, Stage Direction, Beginning Directing (TH 237), Acting Methods (TH255), and Acting Periods and Styles (TH434).

He was struck by how robust the Theatre and Music programs are at CSC.

“It was clear to me that there exists a great passion for the arts both in the college infrastructure and the region at large. I also truly appreciate the community feel at CSC, the potential for cross-curricular collaboration, and the impact I'm able to have on our students, on stage and off," Downes said.

He earned his bachelor’s from the University of the Arts and his Master of Music from Oklahoma City University. He completed additional acting training at Circle in the Square, in New York City. He has more than 15 years of experience as a professional equity actor and musician in New York City and Philadelphia.

Katelyn Lambert will be a Lecturer teaching Fundamentals of Oral Communication (CA 125) , Event Planning and Leadership (CA 239), and Applied Public Relations (CA 350).

She is a CSC alumna and wanted to return to campus to teach after she earned a master’s in Communication from the University of Nebraska Omaha.

“Chadron is such a unique community, and CSC is filled with faculty that make great mentors, so I knew this is where I wanted to come teach before entering a PhD program,” she said.

She recently presented two research articles on pop culture at the Central States Communication Association Conference.

Quick is an Instructor who will teach Guitar Ensemble (MUS 111), Music Pathways (MUS 141), Guitar Class (MUS 216), Recording Techniques (MUS 335), (MUS 235) Music Appreciation, and private guitar and bass lessons.

Quick said he was drawn to CSC by the opportunity to teach guitar and bass, as well as the emphasis on student-focused academic practices.

He earned a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado and a bachelor’s in Liberal Arts from Montana State University.

Justice Studies, Social Sciences, and English

Kwon is an Assistant Professor who will teach Rhetoric and Writing (ENG 135) and Advanced Topics in Creative Writing (ENG 498).

He said his English colleagues impressed him as dedicated teachers and researchers.

“I find Chadron to be small, but also beautiful. I imagine CSC students to be earnest learners,” Kwon said.

He earned a doctorate at Oklahoma State University, master’s degrees from both the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Iliff School of Theology. His bachelor’s is from Clark University.

Covolo is an Instructor teaching Multicultural Issues in Criminal Justice (CJ 336) and two sections of The Academic Life (EDUC 121).

"As an undergraduate, I had the opportunity to study abroad with the CSC Justice Studies Department. I spent three weeks abroad in the United Kingdom studying Comparative Criminal Justice. Dr. Nobiling and Dr. Wada were enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and creative; they made the experience unforgettable. Their class inspired me to study abroad for two years in Russia and pursue a Ph.D.,” Covolo said. “Teaching at CSC was my academic career aspiration since the college serves rural students and first-generation students."

She is pursuing a doctorate in Administration Leadership and Service from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She was a 2020 Graduate Fellowship Recipient. She earned a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from New Mexico State University, and a bachelor’s from the University of Wyoming.

She completed Russian Language courses at Privet Language School in Kaliningrad, Russia, in 2013-14.

Pruitt Santos is an&nbsp;Instructor teaching Introduction to Political Science (PS 101), US Politics and Civic Engagement (PS 110), Politics and Economics (PS 210), US Politics and Government (PS 321), Global Politics (PS 332), Political Inquiry (PS 410), and Democracy: US and the World (PS 439/PS 539).

Pruitt Santos said the welcoming community and small class sizes at CSC made Chadron a clear choice for her.

“I want to contribute to my students' academic and professional development,” she said.

She earned a doctorate in Global Studies from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, a master’s in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from American University, and a bachelor’s in Political Science from California State University, San Marcos.

Business, Mathematics, and Science

Bower is an Instructor teaching Principles of Management (MGMT 230), Project Management (BIS 430),

Statistics for Business and Economics (BA 336), and System Analysis and Design (BIS 431).

Bower said he had some great, unique experiences in the Air Force and as a business owner, and is honored to become a member of the CSC community.

He earned two masters’ degrees, one in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and another in Religion from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He also has a bachelor’s in Applied Studies from the University of Minnesota. He earned an Associate of Science in Airway Science from the Community College of the Air Force.

WESTCO CEO David Briggs and Petroleum Division Manager Jess Wimmer, presented the Alliance Fire Department with a donation of $40,000 on behalf of WESTCO and the Land O’Lakes Foundation during the Alliance City Council meeting on Sept. 6.

The donation was made possible by the Land O’Lakes Foundation Coop Match Program, which matches dollar-for-dollar the cash donations of member cooperatives to local nonprofit organizations, schools and cities. According to Alliance Fire Chief Troy Shoemaker, the funds will help the fire department purchase new bunker gear.

Land O’Lakes Foundation Executive Director Morgan Kinross-Wright said, “Land O’Lakes is pleased to make donations which impact communities where members, employees, plants and facilities are located.”

Briggs said, “WESTCO is thankful to the Land O’Lakes Foundation for the opportunity to participate in the Member Co-op Match Program. We are also grateful to the Alliance Fire Department for their efforts in protecting our community, which we witnessed first-hand as they battled a fire at our Tire Center on June 28.”

'Husker Game Day Traditions' presentation to be held at Alliance library

Today at 2:27 a.m. the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department battled a house fire on West 8th Street.&nbsp;

The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department used an aerial truck to help fight the fire with Crawford Volunteer Fire Department.&nbsp;

The house was engulfed in flames and a total loss.&nbsp;

Heritage Apartments, north of the fire, was evacuated for protection of the residents.&nbsp;

Chadron resident Andrew Scherbarth escaped the fire. 58-year-old Nanci Hartman died at the scene.&nbsp;

"While the Chadron firefighters fought the blaze, the Nebraska Fire Marshal/Investigative team from North Platte was contacted to investigate the cause of the house fire," Dawes County Attorney/Coroner Vance Haug said.&nbsp;

Haug said an autopsy has been ordered.&nbsp;

"The preliminary findings of the investigation indicate that Ms. Hartman died of soot and smoke inhalation as a result of an accidental house fire; likely the result of smoking," Haug added.&nbsp;

Hunting on state recreation areas begins in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Nebraska Bankers Association recognized Sen. Mike Jacobson of North Platte and Andy Olson of Hershey with the 2022 NBA Agri-business Recognition Award. The award has been presented each year since 1983 to individuals who have made significant contributions to the state of Nebraska and its agricultural industry. The presentation was made during the NBA’s Fall Agri-business Conference in Lincoln.

Jacobson is president and CEO of NebraskaLand Bank in North Platte, which he founded in 1998. The bank has grown to $900 million in assets and employs 105 people. Earlier this year, he was appointed to represent District 42 in the Nebraska Legislature where he is a member of the Agriculture, General Affairs and Natural Resources Committees.

Growing up on a farm sparked Jacobson’s passion for agriculture. He studied agricultural economics and agricultural education in college and taught for a short time before beginning his banking career as an agricultural lending officer at City National Bank in Hastings. He later moved to Lincoln to work for First Commerce Bancshares, eventually leading the correspondent division. In that role, he managed a participation portfolio that assisted banks across Nebraska in meeting the credit needs of their agriculture customers.

Jacobson is a member of the Governor’s Agricultural Advisory Committee, the Farm Foundation and the board of directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka. He served as chair of the Nebraska Bankers Association in 2009. He is a past president of the Agriculture Builders of Nebraska and previously served on the American Bankers Association Agricultural Banking Advisory Work Group. Jacobson’s many community activities include serving as president of the North Platte Development Corporation and the North Platte Public Schools Foundation Board.

With the purchase of three mares in 1954, Olson began his long career of raising Lazy U Quarter Horses. In 1964, he and his father incorporated Olson Farms. Custom cattle feeding was added to the operation in 1986. The business was expanded in 2015 and they now feed 32,000 head of cattle and employ 40 people. Olson Farms is in the process of adding capacity to its feed yard, with further expansion in the planning stages. Conservation is a priority for Olson, and he has implemented numerous conservation practices on his operation.

Olson is a strong supporter of local and national youth organizations. One of his most recent activities is donating beef to schools. He also regularly donates beef to local food pantries, shelters and the North Platte Opportunity Center.

Among his many awards, Olson was named an honorary member of the Paxton FFA Chapter, served as parade marshal of the Hershey Fall Festival and was honored with the North Platte Business of the Year Award. He was a founding member of the Hershey Lions Club and served as president of Maria Lutheran Church.

Western Community Health Resources to hold 'Fun Day Activities' for kids

Thanks to a recently completed project by the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Game&nbsp;and&nbsp;Parks&nbsp;Commission, anglers are sure to enjoy better fishing on a half-mile section of trout stream in one of the Pine Ridge’s most scenic locations.

The renovation crew teamed up in August to improve Sowbelly Creek where it flows through the 160-acre G.H. Coffee Park 3½ miles northeast of Harrison. The project, estimated at about $40,000, was funded by a grant from the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Environmental Trust.

Anglers familiar with the clear, babbling brook&nbsp;and&nbsp;its picturesque backdrop of sandstone buttes&nbsp;and&nbsp;pine forest will notice a difference.

Where before the stream flowed just a few inches deep, it now moves over rock riffles&nbsp;and&nbsp;into pools up to 5 feet deep. At bends in the stream, anglers now find logs, rocks&nbsp;and&nbsp;other structures that not only prevent erosion but also attract fish as overhead cover.

Al Hanson,&nbsp;Game&nbsp;and&nbsp;Parks’ northwest district fisheries supervisor, said the newly renovated section of stream will provide immediate improved fishing opportunity&nbsp;and&nbsp;should get even better with time.

“Before long, the vegetation will return&nbsp;and&nbsp;these holes will hold a lot of fish,” Hanson said.

The stream, about 5 feet wide, already harbors a healthy population of brown trout&nbsp;and&nbsp;brook trout,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Hanson said future releases of cutthroats or rainbows would capitalize on the expanded capacity.

Another highlight of the improvements involves fencing. Three new walk-through Y-gates make it so anglers can access the entire public portion of stream without crossing over barbed-wire fence. Signage has been added at the property boundaries to deter park visitors from trespassing on adjacent private land.

Hanson said the improvements were designed to withstand flooding but noted nobody can be sure how they will handle such an event until it happens. It is hoped the area can avoid an event similar to June 2015, when a 4- to 6-inch rain over saturated soil caused water to rush down the narrow canyon&nbsp;and&nbsp;create a massive logjam of up to 4,000 cubic yards of timber at the park. A clean-up effort using funds from emergency management agencies occurred that November.

Coffee Park is named for Guy H. “Chick” Coffee. His wife, Ila, donated the property to the village of Harrison in 1972, the year he died. The property was developed in the next four years with money from the Land&nbsp;and&nbsp;Water Conservation Fund&nbsp;and&nbsp;donations. The village owns&nbsp;and&nbsp;maintains the park, which features picnic shelters, playground equipment&nbsp;and&nbsp;vault toilets.

Sowbelly creek, canyon&nbsp;and&nbsp;road were named for an 1800s incident. Legend has it that Fort Robinson military scouts hid for days in the vicinity while being pursued by Native Americans. When united with a rescue party, the hungry scouts were provided salty bacon, often referred to then as “sowbelly.”

By Nebraska Game and ParksBecause vendors were unable to provide birds, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will not be releasing pen-reared pheasants before the youth pheasant season and Thanksgiving holiday this year.The statewide youth season still will take place Oct. 22-23, but only youth ages 15 and younger will be allowed to hunt.“It’s very unfortunate the Commission was unable to purchase birds to release for the special season this year,” said Alicia Hardin, the agency’s Wildlife Division administrator. “Two separate requests for proposals and numerous phone calls were made to potential vendors, but none were able to fulfill the request this year. We know families look forward to hunting our public areas during the special season. We encourage hunters to still go out and take Nebraska’s youth hunting and spend some quality time outdoors.”People interested in hunting pen-raised birds in a more controlled environment are encouraged to visit one of state’s 48 Controlled Shooting Areas. CSAs are privately-owned areas for hunting upland gamebirds during an extended season.
