GRAND ISLAND, NEB. — Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Trooper John Hadaway captured first place honors and Trooper Tim Baumann finished as runner-up in the Nebraska Inspector Championships held over the weekend in Grand Island.

Trooper Hadaway is a 12-year veteran of NSP, stationed in Broken Bow, and is assigned to the Carrier Enforcement Division. Trooper Baumann has served with NSP since 1996 and is stationed in Nebraska City.

The Nebraska Inspector Championships are an annual event as part of the Nebraska Truck Driving Championships. Each participant goes through a table-top exercise, various hands-on inspections, and a personal interview. The event hasn’t been held since 2019 because of COVID-19 concerns in 2020 and 2021.

Trooper Hadaway will now represent Nebraska at the North American Inspector Championships (NAIC) in Indianapolis, Indiana, from August 15-19. During the NAIC, inspectors from across North America are tested in a series of timed events, in which they demonstrate their knowledge of the North American Standard Inspection Program.

In addition to the competition, each inspector receives training on the latest safety information, technology, standards, and inspection procedures. The NAIC is held in conjunction with the American Trucking Association National Truck Driving Championships.

North Platte's Cedar Room named 'Best Steakhouse in the U.S.' by travel magazine

SUTHERLAND, Neb.-An Ogallala man has been arrested after he allegedly made threats with a gun at Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said on June 3 at around 11:00 p.m., a call came into the Lincoln County 911 center reporting a man threatening subjects with a gun at the Reservoir.

Callers said the man wandered into a group of people camping and started waving a gun around while telling them to, "be quiet," and to, "shut it down for the night."

Several deputies arrived and made contact with Roy Lunkwitz, 59. A search of Lunkwitz produced a 9 mm handgun, according to authorities.

Authorities said deputies spoke to several campers who corroborated the earlier account. At least two make campers said Lunkwitz pointed the gun at them while others, including 14 children, hid in different areas.

Lunkwitz was arrested on suspicion of terroristic threats and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have concluded the annual&nbsp;Click It or Ticket&nbsp;campaign with a busy weekend across the state.

During the two-week initiative, troopers removed from the road 40 impaired drivers and cited 47 people for seat belt or child safety restraint violations.&nbsp;Click It or Ticket&nbsp;was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $24,780 from the NDOT – Highway Safety Office.

In addition to the 40 arrests made for driving under the influence, troopers also issued citations for speeding (855), open alcohol container (23), minor in possession (28), driving under suspension (69), no proof of insurance (40), no seat belt (32), and improper child restraint (15). Troopers also assisted more than 600 motorists in need of help on Nebraska roadways.

The campaign closed with a busy weekend on Nebraska roadways. This weekend, troopers made 12 arrests for driving under the influence, cited 8 motorists for speeding above 100 miles per hour, and located two pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic stop.

On Friday, a trooper conducted a traffic stop for speeding on Interstate 80 near York. During the traffic stop, a York County Sheriff’s K-9 detected the presence of a controlled substance in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed 2 pounds of methamphetamine and approximately 2.5 grams of dimethyltryptamine. The driver, Jason Smith, 47, of Victorville, California, was lodged in York County Jail for possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sunday afternoon, a trooper clocked a motorcycle traveling eastbound at 122 miles per hour near Odessa on I-80. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the rider refused to yield and continued eastbound. The trooper initiated a pursuit. The rider drove recklessly through traffic, splitting vehicles and driving on the shoulder at times. The motorcycle exited I-80 at the Kearney interchange and began fleeing southbound on Highway 44. After approximately six miles, the rider stopped voluntarily and was taken into custody without incident. The rider, Andy Peneda-Portillo, 21, was lodged in Buffalo County Jail for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and numerous traffic violations.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is threatening to sue the Biden administration over a Department of Agriculture school meal program that defines discrimination as based on sexual orientation and gender identity. 

But the USDA says it is working to get voluntary compliance before referring violations to the Department of Justice. 

The Republican governor earlier this year pushed the state to join more than a dozen others to ban transgender athletes from girls’ school sports leagues.

 At the time, some opponents to the proposal argued that South Dakota’s law could imperil federal funding for the state’s public schools.

Wind Cave National Park to move to cashless fee collection

CHADRON – During May, Chadron residents likely noticed C-Hill looked a little different during the evening. That’s because for the past four years in May, the C on C-Hill has been illuminated for Mental Health Awareness Month. Terri Haynes, Project Manager of the Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education (AWARE)&nbsp;grant with Educational Service Unit 13, said the idea came about during discussions by&nbsp;local AWARE grant leaders.

“We wanted to do something similar to lighting Chimney Rock green in Bayard. Dr. (Caroline) Winchester had the idea of lighting the C, and I set out to figure out how to go about it,” Haynes said.

Haynes said the lenses of 200 solar lights were painted green before they were installed this year because the color represents mental health. The AWARE five-year grant to Chadron Public Schools, now in its fourth year, and the Chadron Rotary Club provided funding for the lights.

“We use the lighting of the C as the kickoff event for May as Mental Health Awareness Month. Following the lighting, we have an awareness walk to City Hall for a proclamation. We reach out to the public and ask interested parties to join us. Our Middle School HOPE Squad is a significant participant,” Haynes said.

ESU 13 partners for the awareness month include Panhandle Partnership, Western Community Health Resources, Chadron Public Library, local mental health professionals, and Chadron State College. Haynes said several partner organizations and community members have an interest in continuing the C-Hill lighting project after the AWARE grant ends.

“Each year, it feels like the community and school conversations around mental health become more and more comfortable. Our youth are noticeably more comfortable than our adults. We hope that one day, our public is as comfortable talking about and treating their mental health as they are going for a dental checkup,” Haynes said.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Prosecutors won't seek the death penalty for a New York man charged with killing three people in Rapid City.

 The Rapid City Journal reports Pennington County State's Attorney Mark Vargo told a judge Tuesday that he wasn't aware the 45-day deadline for making a decision had passed four days earlier. 

Thirty-seven-year-old Arnson Absolu faces three counts of premeditated first-degree murder in connection with the August 2020 deaths of Charles Red Willow, Ashley Nagy and Dakota Zaiser. If he's convicted he would now face life in prison.

Route 385 Cruisers to hold annual 'Thunder on the Prairie' car show

GRAND ISLAND, NEB.&nbsp; — One of the most notable times of year in Nebraska is underway: Construction season. Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol are adding emphasis around work zones to keep construction crews and motorists safe during the summer months.

“The crews working on road projects during the summer months deserve safety on the job,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As they work to improve our roadways, troopers will be on patrol to keep crews and motorists safe, by monitoring for unsafe driving in and around construction zones.”

In Troop C, based in Grand Island, troopers will be performing localized efforts thanks in part to a grant for $41,300 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office. Troop C’s effort runs through September 30.

“When driving in or near a construction zone, focusing on the road is imperative,” said Captain Jeff Roby, Commander of Troop C. “The choice to put the phone down could be a life-saving decision for one of the many professionals working on these construction projects.”

Troopers focus on traffic safety around work zones

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Republican governor hopeful Jim Pillen has scored the endorsement of the Nebraska Cattlemen, a top advocacy group for the state’s ranchers.

 Pillen, a veterinarian and the owner of a hog farm operation, is running to replace current Gov. Pete Ricketts, a fellow Republican who leaves office in January because of term limits. 

Brenda Masek, the chairwoman of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s political action committee, says Pillen has “walked in our shoes” as an agricultural producer and would be a strong advocate for the industry at the Capitol.

Street work continues in Alliance

Break a rack and avoid those gobble holes!

With more than a century behind it, one Crawford building has received a facelift and is home to a new business that encourages kids and adults alike to put down their phones and enjoy simpler forms of entertainment.

The Brick House Emporium opened in April in what has long been known as Old City Hall at 209 Elm St. in Crawford. Owner Nina Anderson has fond memories of spending time at The Chief in Crawford when she was growing up, settling into high-backed booths, playing pool or pinball and listening to music on the jukebox.

“We’d just set there for hours. Adults and kids hung out there all the time. I wanted to give Crawford a place like that back,” she said.

Anderson’s career took her away from Crawford as an adult, though she returned to the area in 2002 to take a position in Scottsbluff before later moving to Kansas City. After 30 years with the Federal Aviation Administration, Anderson retired in 2019 and returned to Crawford, where her three sisters and son, Ian, who graduated from Crawford High School while she was stationed in Scottsbluff, still lived.

The Northwest Nebraska community has tried to support a youth center in the past, but never quite succeeded, she said. Anderson, along with her son and Brittany Horan, set out to open a business that would provide a safe place for kids to hang out but also be a fun, relaxed, alcohol-free environment for people of all ages.

“It’s just something Crawford needed,” Nina Anderson said.

The trio looked at a few buildings before settling on Old City Hall.

“We figured it had more potential,” said Ian Anderson, noting that in addition to the business, his mother also lives in the upper story of the building.

Constructed in 1914 for $12,800, the western half of Old City Hall was home to the city government offices, while the Crawford Fire Department occupied the east half from 1915 until the 1960s when it moved across the street. The Crawford Public Library also called the building home, moving into the second floor in 1965 for 20 years.

The fire department’s electric siren was installed in the building’s cupola in 1930, replacing the original 1891 bell and the 1907 steam whistle.

“The siren is still up there because it was too heavy to take down,” Nina Anderson said. The city’s abandoned jail cells still reside in the basement, as well. The building more recently has been home to an antique mall and a café.

With more than two years of sweat equity, the Andersons and Horan are proud to add the Brick House Emporium to the Old City Hall’s history. Pool tables and pinball games, including a Lethal Weapon game they completely rebuilt, offer hours of entertainment while the jukebox plays in the background. Popcorn, snacks, and smoothies keep hunger at bay, and on Mondays Horan, a Scottsbluff native who has worked in delis and bakeries in the Panhandle, prepares and serves homestyle meals from 11 a.m. until the food runs out. She also offers specialty cupcakes every Wednesday.

Though they haven’t been open long, Ian Anderson said it’s been amazing to see the community’s reaction.

“The community has been very supportive,” Nina Anderson said.

The building still needs additional renovation, including Anderson’s living quarters, but when the group looks back over the last two years, they realize just how much they’ve accomplished.

While that old siren is still there, it’s now been enclosed so birds and bats can’t do any further damage. The building has been rewired and the power upgraded, and new windows, insulation and HVAC were installed. The roof on the small side of the building was redone, and one bathroom was converted into two. A kitchen with cabinets by a local craftsman was constructed so Horan can whip up her weekly specials, and in the main room of the business, they painstakingly hand-painted the wall to match the brick wallboard in the kitchen.

Once the structure was sound, they began decorating, choosing steam punk as their theme, Ian Anderson said, pointing out things like gear boxes for light switches.

“I love steam punk décor,” Nina Anderson said.

In addition to the pool and arcade games, the Brick House Emporium is working with local artists to offer their crafts, jewelry and tie-dye. The variety of offerings and the possibilities they hope to explore in the future led them to the business’ name, Ian Anderson said.

“The definition of an emporium is all inclusive, and that’s the idea,” he said.

The Brick House Emporium is currently open 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday; 2-8 p.m. Tuesday; 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday; and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday – Saturday. It is closed Sunday to the public but is available for private parties.

Shoot stick, play pinball at Brick House Emporium in Crawford

On May 31 at approximately 2:05 p.m. the Scottsbluff Police Department, Scottsbluff Fire Department and Valley Ambulance were called to a two- vehicle rollover accident at the intersection of Highway 26 and 14th Avenue.

A northbound 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara failed to yield the right of way to a westbound 2014 Dodge Ram pickup.

"The resulting collision caused the Dodge pickup to roll onto its side while striking a light pole," Scottsbluff Police Sergeant Cody R. Enlow said. "The two occupants of the Dodge pickup were extricated from the vehicle by Scottsbluff Fire Department and transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries."

The 16-year-old male driving the Suzuki was issued a citation for failure to yield to a motor vehicle. 

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.&nbsp;

The Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Public Power District assisted with the accident.&nbsp;
