Deadwood, SD - PRCA “Back When They Bucked” is back for the second year. This All-Day Rodeo is bringing an extra punch in 2022. Western Legacy Foundation is partnering with the NAJA Shriners of Deadwood for a two-day, all day rodeo event. We are looking forward to hosting this elite event again in the unique, rustic, old west setting of the Days of 76 Event Complex, Deadwood, SD, Memorial Weekend, Sunday and Monday, May 29 &amp; 30.

Back When They Bucked is produced by Western Legacy Foundation (WLF) and presented by Brink Constructors, Inc. This event is designed to raise funds to support the WLF and its efforts which include college scholarships, support of community organizations, programs, and projects that enhance services and education to the public. NAJA Shrine is a fraternal organization that has been part of western South Dakota for over 125 years. They support and provide financial resources to over 750 local children to help them obtain high-quality medical care, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. To date, NAJA Shriners have helped tens of thousands of children in Western South Dakota, and altogether, Shriners have helped over 1.4 million children world-wide.

This two-day event will kick off on Sunday, May 29th with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) Ladies Breakaway long go. You will witness some of the fastest roping you have ever seen. The ladies will be competing for a spot in the short round that will be held during the PRCA Xtreme Bronc Riding event which will be held in the afternoon. Leading off the afternoon of rodeo action will be a South Dakota High School Rodeo Breakaway Roping and Saddle Bronc Match. The PRCA Xtreme Saddle Bronc Match, a Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) sanctioned event featuring “extreme bronc riding” will follow the high school event. Twenty-four cowboys will compete in the long go-round with the eight highest scores advancing to the short round. All proceeds from day one will go to the Western Legacy Foundation.

Day two, Monday, May 30, will feature the PRCA Steer Wrestling long go in the morning with the fastest times moving to the short go during the afternoon performance. South Dakota High School steer wrestlers and bareback riders will kick off the afternoon, followed by the PRCA Bareback Riding Shootout and steer wrestling short go.

All proceeds from day two will go to the NAJA Shriners of Deadwood. Short round cowboys will be vying for the title and prize money. Winnings from each event will count towards their earnings to advance to the Wrangler National Finals in Las Vegas, NV

Let’s help keep them safe and healthy while enjoying these exciting outdoor activities by slowing down and paying attention as drivers share the road.

“With school out, more children will be outside. Please watch your speed, especially near playgrounds, softball &amp; baseball fields, parks, and residential areas,” said Janelle Visser, Health Educator with Panhandle Public Health District. “A child could dash into the street at any moment, pay attention and always anticipate the unexpected.”

Parents, please go over important bicycling safety tips with your kids like wearing a properly fitted helmet and making eye contact with drivers. Encourage children to look left, right, and left again before crossing the street and cross at marked intersections with a pedestrian crossing light or marked crossing, especially on busier streets and corridors.

Alliance – Beginning Monday, May 16, 2022, all offices within the City Municipal Building located at 324 Laramie Avenue, with the exception of the Utility Billing Office; will be operating under their summer hours of Monday-Thursday 7:00 am – 5:00 pm, Friday 7:00 am – 1:00 pm. Hours are subject to change.

Alliance Municipal Building offices to begin summer hours

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska has agreed to pay $479,000 to the family of a “talkative” Scottsbluff man who was strangled to death in 2017 by a fellow inmate who didn’t want a cellmate. 

The lawsuit filed by Terry Berry Jr.’s family against prison officials they argued were responsible for the 22-year-old’s death because they put him in the same cell as Patrick Schroeder was dismissed last week after both sides agreed to the settlement. 

Berry was nearing parole when he was placed with Schroeder who was serving a life sentence for killing a 75-year-old man. 

Schroeder later pleaded guilty to killing Berry and was sentenced to death.

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A man facing a possible life sentence on federal drug and money laundering charges has won the lottery in South Dakota. KELO-TV reports 45-year-old Canbie Thompson was featured on the state lottery’s website for winning $40,000 on a scratch-off ticket.

 Thompson earlier pleaded guilty to the charges which resulted from a larger Minnehaha County drug bust involving 11 pounds of methamphetamine and seven other defendants.

 According to court documents, when police pulled Thompson over last year, they found drugs in his car. 

He also admitted he was involved in a money-laundering scheme to hide drug money.

CHADRON – Graduating Chadron State College seniors were honored Friday during Ivy Day, a traditional event since 1919, sponsored by the Blue Key and Cardinal Key honoraries.

Ivy Day royalty elected by the student body are Queen Jori Peters of Mitchell, Neb., and King Estabon Bozeman of Los Angeles. The queen’s attendants were Abigail Klammer of Juanita, Neb., Aubree Noble of Chadron, Alexis Heller of Wisner, Neb., and Isioma Akwanamnye of Lagos, Nigeria. The king’s attendants were Jordan Orr of Ogallala, Neb., Riley Hill of Greybull, Wyo., Justin Gress of Hebron, Neb., and Kael Juelfs of Kingman, Ariz. Junior attendants to the queen candidates were Lillian Keithly, Violet Keithly, Vivian Ritzen, KhiKinoi Sayaloune, Riley Snitily, all daughters of CSC employees.

Platinum Eagle awards were presented to Klammer and Nathan Cronin of Fort Pierre, South Dakota. The award, considered the highest honor a CSC student can receive, is presented annually to one male and one female for distinguished leadership and service. Runners-up for the award were Noble and Bozeman.

Student orators were Bozeman and Akwanamnye. The faculty greeter was Dr. Ron Bolze, professor in the Applied Sciences.

The students crowned as royalty and the Platinum Eagle recipients were just some of the outstanding graduates who received accolades. Many students were recognized for their accomplishments by their academic departments, as well as those who graduated with honors.

CSC seniors receive honors at Ivy Day

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska collected more tax revenue than projected in April and is still well ahead of expectations for the current fiscal year. 

The state Department of Revenue reported net April tax receipts of $939 million, which is 66.7% above the official state forecast of $563 million.

 The numbers are often higher in April as taxpayers file their returns. 

Net sales-and-use taxes were slightly below the forecast, while net indivdual and corporate incomes taxes and net miscellaneous taxes all came in higher than predicted. 

Nebraska has collected $5.153 billion in the current fiscal year that ends on June 30. 

That’s 11.1% above the official forecast of $4.637 billion.

BROKEN BOW, NEB.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office and Broken Bow Police Department, is investigating a suspected murder-suicide that occurred overnight.

At approximately 1:45 a.m. Friday, NSP was requested by local law enforcement to investigate a homicide in Broken Bow. The victim, Angie Miller, 45, was located deceased inside her home in the 800 block of N. 13th&nbsp;Street in Broken Bow.

Investigators developed a suspect, identified as Ryan Miller, 47, who was the ex-husband of Angie Miller. Investigators learned of a location near Anselmo where Ryan Miller often went. At approximately 4:45 a.m., troopers located Miller in a pasture at that location near Anselmo. Miller was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

NSP investigating suspected murder-suicide in Custer County

Live theatre is returning to Fort Robinson State Park near Crawford this summer.

After a two-year interruption because of COVID-19 precautions, the Post Playhouse will begin its summer run of five musicals the last weekend of May.

Tom Ossowski, the Playhouse’s producing artistic director, said the repertory theatre was in the process of contracting performers when the pandemic struck in 2020, and the long break makes it especially gratifying to be back in rehearsals this year.

“We’re not just a theatre about doing a show; we’re a theatre about our community and bringing people together,” Ossowski said. “And, that’s been the hard part. Not being able to let people come together over the summer, see a show, have dinner and have a nice evening out. But, it’s also nice to just be back performing again.”

The first of the shows, “Damn Yankees,” begins May 27. Joining the rotating schedule will be “Desperate Measures” on June 3, “The Sound of Music” on June 10, “Church Basement Ladies” on June 24 and “Something Rotten!” on July 1. The shows will run through Aug. 14.

“I think we’ve picked up a great season that offers something for everyone. Something a little bit more sophisticated for the adults and something more splashy or entertaining for our young audiences,” Ossowski said.

The Playhouse again has hired professional performers from points throughout the country, along with a few actors from the surrounding region. “The Sound of Music” features local youth in its cast.

The season schedule, tickets and more are available at postplayhouse.com. Tickets are available for individual performances, and four- and five-show season subscriptions with a discounted rate. Tickets also can be purchased by calling the box office at 888-665-1976.

Chadron —The Chadron Police Department is reminding drivers about the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seat belt this spring, during the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) national Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs from May 23 to June 5, 2022.

“We want the act of buckling up to become automatic to all drivers and passengers,” said Sergeant Chet Swanson. “It’s not just a safe thing to do – it’s the law. During the Click It or Ticket campaign, we’ll be working with our fellow law enforcement officers across local and state lines to ensure the message gets out to drivers and passengers. Buckling up is the simplest thing you can do to limit injury or save your life during a crash. We see the results of not wearing a seat belt all the time. We see the loss of life. So often, it could have been prevented.”

For this year’s Click It or Ticket seat belt mobilization effort, NHTSA is asking all states to participate in the kickoff event, Border to Border (B2B), a one-day, 4-hour national seat belt awareness event on May 23 that is coordinated by participating state highway safety offices and their respective law enforcement liaisons. The B2B program aims to increase law enforcement participation by coordinating highly visible seat belt enforcement and providing seat belt fact sheets for drivers at heavily traveled, highly visible state border checkpoints.

According to NHTSA, in 2020, there were 10,893 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States. In that same year, 58% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m.–5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts. That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is nighttime enforcement. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations day and night. In the state of Nebraska the maximum penalty for a seat belt violation is a $25 fine plus court costs.

“You may think you’re safe in a certain vehicle, or on a certain road, but the truth is, you’re safest when you buckle up, no matter what,” said Sergeant Chet Swanson, “Unfortunately, many families are suffering because their loved ones refused to follow this simple step. In&nbsp;

fact, in 2020, more than twice as many males were killed in crashes as compared to females, with lower belt use rates, too. Of the males killed in crashes in 2020, more than half (55%) were unrestrained. For females killed in crashes, 43% were not buckled up.

“If the enforcement effort wakes people up to the dangers of unrestrained driving, we’ll consider our mission to be a success,” said Sergeant Chet Swanson, “If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits. Help us spread this lifesaving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction. In an observational survey we conducted in the City of Chadron only 60% of the motorists were restrained. Big Blue Bay 2022 season in Alliance

Runza Restaurant opened in Alliance on May 12 located near Holiday Inn Express on Highway 385. 

This is the fourth Runza Restaurant in the Panhandle owned by franchisees Neal and Lora Blomenkamp. They also run restaurants in Chadron, Scottsbluff and Gering. 

Neal Blomenkamp told Panhandle Post that "opportunity presented itself" when he learned land was available next to Alliance's newest hotel.

"I've always thought Alliance would be a good community for Runza," Blomenkamp said. "I live in Scottsbluff/Gering and so when they said this is what we have for land, we decided to move forward at that time. My wife and I are franchisees. And then I have three children,  Spencer, Brooke and Tanner who were also involved in the Runza. And they felt like it would be a good move, so that's kind of how we ended up there. We receive lots of Alliance residents in Scottsbluff, Gering and Chadron."

Blomenkamp said the new Runza location will help grow the company and help travelers discover the restaurant. 

"Obviously, you're on the Ports-to-Plains Highway and it will help I guess educate the rest of the United States what Runza is...and what a high performing Nebraska based company is since 1949."

Blomenkamp said Runza also likes to give back to the communities they're in. 

"We're definitely a community partner," Blomenkamp said. "We live in western Nebraska, we understand the importance of promoting just all the different not-for-profit organizations. I personally and my family we like to help for beautification. And just a lot with kids programs, whether it be educational, the arts, sports, those types of things. This is the fourth Runza Restaurant in the Panhandle owned by franchisees Neal and Lora Blomenkamp. They also run restaurants in Chadron, Scottsbluff and Gering. Neal Blomenkamp told Panhandle Post that "opportunity presented itself" when he learned land was available next to Alliance's newest hotel.<figure>

 </figure>"I've always thought Alliance would be a good community for Runza," Blomenkamp said. "I live in Scottsbluff/Gering and so when they said this is what we have for land, we decided to move forward at that time. My wife and I are franchisees. And then I have three children, Spencer, Brooke and Tanner who were also involved in the Runza. And they felt like it would be a good move, so that's kind of how we ended up there. We receive lots of Alliance residents in Scottsbluff, Gering and Chadron."Blomenkamp said the new Runza location will help grow the company and help travelers discover the restaurant. "Obviously, you're on the Ports-to-Plains Highway and it will help I guess educate the rest of the United States what Runza is...and what a high performing Nebraska based company is since 1949."Blomenkamp said Runza also likes to give back to the communities they're in. "We're definitely a community partner," Blomenkamp said. "We live in western Nebraska, we understand the importance of promoting just all the different not-for-profit organizations. I personally and my family we like to help for beautification. And just a lot with kids programs, whether it be educational, the arts, sports, those types of things. LINCOLN, Neb.-Governor Pete Ricketts proclaimed May as “Foster Care Month” during a morning ceremony at the State Capitol.&nbsp; He was joined by leaders from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Children and Family Services (CFS) and partner nonprofits supporting foster care in Nebraska.

“Foster parents step into the gap when a child’s biological parents are unable to offer care,” said Gov. Governor Ricketts and DHHS encourage Nebraskans to consider becoming foster parents. &nbsp;Foster parents are crucial to a strong foster care system, and they have a unique opportunity to positively change the life of a child forever.

The Children’s Bureau set the theme for this year’s Foster Care Month as&nbsp;Relative and Kin Connections: Keeping Families Strong&nbsp;signifying the importance of relatives being involved in the lives of foster children. &nbsp;CFS Director Stephanie Beasley emphasized the importance of relative and kinship placement saying, “When children enter the foster care system, placing them with relatives provides invaluable support structures and lessens the impact of trauma. &nbsp;That is why CFS has a majority of our children in care placed with relatives. &nbsp;This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to the great work our teammates do every day to aid children entering care.”

Becoming a foster parent involves five steps, which those interested in becoming foster parents should review to see if they qualify.

1. Background checks -&nbsp;These are required for all members of their household ages 18&nbsp;years old and older, including a national criminal history check through fingerprinting for all household members ages 18 and older.

2. Home Study -&nbsp;A home study is required and is conducted by either the Department of Health and Human Services or a contracted foster care agency.&nbsp;

3. References -&nbsp;Three positive references are required&nbsp;for each adult household member who will provide care to children.

4. Application -&nbsp;A completed foster care licensing application and a health information report are required&nbsp;for each adult household member providing care, signed by a health practitioner. &nbsp;These forms are provided by DHHS.

5. Training -&nbsp;Adult household members providing care&nbsp;are required to&nbsp;attend foster parent pre-service training. &nbsp;This training is offered by DHHS.

LINCOLN –&nbsp;Today, Governor Pete Ricketts,&nbsp;in accordance with a proclamation from the White House,&nbsp;announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff immediately in solemn remembrance of American lives lost due to the coronavirus. &nbsp;According to the proclamation, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of one million Americans.

Flags will be flown at half-staff beginning immediately and return to full staff at sunset on Monday, May 16, 2022.

The Honey Bear Preschool Graduation ceremony was held on May 10 at the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center.&nbsp;

Alliance Honey Bear Preschool celebrates end of school with obstacle course

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — At the height of the pandemic, the meat processing industry worked closely with political appointees in the Trump administration to stave off health restrictions and keep slaughterhouses open even as COVID-19 spread rapidly among workers, according to a Congressional report released Thursday.

The report by the House’s Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis said meat companies pushed to keep their plants open even though they knew workers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-colorado-mexico-greeley-football-da66aaeb93f57d98e62c67575b7f5dda">were at high risk of catching the virus</a>. The lobbying led to health and labor officials watering down their recommendations for the industry and culminated in an executive order President Donald Trump issued in the spring of 2020 designating meat plants as critical infrastructure that needed to remain open.

Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn, who leads the subcommittee, said USDA officials and the industry prioritized production and profits over the health of workers and communities as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-business-health-pandemics-congress-72e766be17083ad819ea3ac26cb7fb76">at least 59,000 workers caught the virus and 269 workers died</a>.

“The shameful conduct of corporate executives pursuing profit at any cost during a crisis and government officials eager to do their bidding regardless of resulting harm to the public must never be repeated,” Clyburn said.

Those firms control 85% of the beef market and 70% of pork production nationwide.The North American Meat Institute trade group said the report distorts the truth and ignores the steps companies took as they spent billions of dollars to retool plants and purchase protective gear for workers as the world learned more about the virus in 2020.“The House Select Committee has done the nation a disservice,” the trade group’s President and CEO Julie Anna Potts said. “The Committee could have tried to learn what the industry did to stop the spread of COVID among meat and poultry workers, reducing positive cases associated with the industry while cases were surging across the country. Instead, the Committee uses 20/20 hindsight and cherry picks data to support a narrative that is completely unrepresentative of the early days of an unprecedented national emergency.”One of the major unions that represents workers at the processing plants condemned the way the Trump administration helped the meat industry.“We only wish that the Trump Administration cared as much about the lives of working people as it did about meat, pork and poultry products,” said Stuart Appelbaum, President of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. “We understood that poultry plants needed to shut down for deep cleaning and to save worker’s lives. If the Trump Administration had developed meaningful safety requirements for workers early on as they should have, this would not have even become an issue.”The report said meat companies were slow to take measures to protect workers from the virus and pushed to make&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-us-news-ap-top-news-ia-state-wire-sd-state-wire-aa3cced1b5c5c40a4bc09db805393d80">government recommendations</a>&nbsp;to require masks to be worn, install dividers between work stations and encourage social distancing in their plants optional. The industry has defended its response to the pandemic in the past and major meat companies say they aggressively worked to meet those safety standards and took additional steps to protect workers.But the report cited a message that a Koch Foods executive sent a lobbyist in the spring of 2020 that said the industry shouldn’t do more than screen employees’ temperatures at the door of plants. Emails show that the companies themselves submitted a draft of the executive order to the administration days before it was issued.Early on in the pandemic, meat companies knew the virus was spreading rapidly among their workers because infection rates were much higher in the plants and their surrounding communities. The report said that in April 2020, a doctor at a hospital near a JBS plant in Cactus, Texas, told the company and government officials in an email that there was clearly a major outbreak at the plant because every COVID-19 patient at the hospital either worked at the plant or was related to a worker. “Your employees will get sick and may die if this factory remains open,” the doctor warned.The report also highlighted the way meat companies aggressively pushed back against government safety recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. That led to the final guidance including language that effectively made the rules optional because it said the recommendations should be done “if feasible” or “where possible.”
