Take ’em Fishing is all about sharing the experience of the sport. It’s about the excitement of feeling the tug of the line in your fingers for the first time. About the sound of someone’s first catch — big or small.

It’s about the memories made. And the adventures to come.

Participants in the 2022 Nebraska Game and Parks fishing challenge will have a chance to win adventure through this year’s four grand prizes:

“Fishing is fun, convenient and a great way to spend time outdoors with family and friends,” said Dean Rosenthal, Fisheries Division administrator. “And we know it’s because of anglers and their passion that we are able to maintain the health of Nebraska’s lakes, streams and rivers.”

Anglers help conservation efforts at Nebraska water bodies and improve access through the purchase of their fishing license and aquatic habitat stamp. These dollars help support the development and improvement of great fishing spots, such as at Fort Robinson State Park in northwest Nebraska and at Conestoga State Recreation Area in the southeast, as well as dozens of ponds, lakes and streams in between.

“Without the support of anglers, these projects wouldn’t be possible,” Rosenthal said. “Take someone fishing because more anglers ensure the health and vitality of Nebraska’s aquatic resources for generations to come.”

Since the start of the annual challenge in 2019, nearly 14,000 beginning angler experiences have been submitted to the program.

Spring turkey hunters are eager to get back in the woods again this year, but they should not be so eager they overlook safety.

The archery season opened March 25. On April 9, youth under age 16 may begin hunting turkeys with shotguns. Adults get the chance to hunt with shotguns starting April 16. The spring turkey season closes May 31.

“Hunting continues to be one of the safest recreational activities there is, but there are a few things to remember as you match wits with a smart turkey,” said Jackson Ellis, Nebraska Hunter Education coordinator with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Ellis has the following safety reminders for turkey hunters:

“Be sure to get out in the field and enjoy this special time of year in pursuit of some of my favorite wild game,” Ellis said. “If you have the chance, take someone along and introduce them to the thrill of hunting gobbling turkeys.”

Hunt turkeys safely this spring

CHADRON – Five Chadron State College students attended the Sigma Tau Delta International Convention in Atlanta March 30 to April 2.

Sarah Wagoner of Gering, Neb., Abigail Swanson of Grand Island, Neb., and Ashy Blacksheep of Chadron presented pieces. Ezra Hare of Chadron and Samuel LaRive of Hot Springs, S.D., also attended, along with faculty advisers Dr. Kimberly Cox and Dr. Mary Clai Jones.

Wagoner read Don't Trust Your Eye: Subversive Male Gaze, a film criticism paper, analyzing the use of male gaze in the rape-revenge exploitation genre. Wagoner was pleased with feedback from attendees during her presentation and in the Q&amp;A following.

“My primary goal with my paper was to make people reconsider their conceptions of the male gaze. I couldn't be happier to have succeeded,” Wagoner said

Swanson presented Before the Bite, an original prose version of Snow White with a marketing flare, as part of a panel titled Prose with Teeth.

Blacksheep, a December 2021 graduate, read The Quiet, a post-apocalyptic piece. She attended the international conferences in 2019 and online in 2021 and said the experience grows richer with each convention.

“It is amazing to come back to these events and find that one’s network has truly grown. I bumped into former co-panelists, chatted with writers whose papers from previous years I still can’t get over, and made new friends. As a writer, I believe a healthy craft involves three things, reading, writing, and collaboration, and these conventions hit every wicket,” Blacksheep said.

Hare and LaRive attended several panel discussions.

“My favorite panels were the ones that contained my classmates. Unlike others in the audience, I was able to approach the panel knowing the full scope of each’s creation,” LaRive said.

Hare said his favorite panel was Challenging Traditional Identity in American Literature.

“Afterward we discussed the complex relationship between the forms of oppression for black Americans and LGBTQ Americans; both the similarities and the important key differences between how such oppression manifests differently for members of those groups via institutionalized systems,” Hare said.

Hare said the conference also confirmed his interest in graduate education.

“Hearing other undergrad students present such wonderful ideas really inspired me to pursue more complex ideas for my upcoming papers. I'm more motivated than ever to further my education for English Literature,” he said.

Conventions are invaluable in students' professional and personal development, according to Cox.

“[Conventions] allow students to see the significance and impact of their work beyond the classroom. They also offer good practice for professional presentations and interviews. I also appreciate the time spent with students on these trips, discussing both their current passions and future professional goals,” Cox said.

Outside the conference, students explored downtown Atlanta and visited several historical sites, including the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts signed off on a $900 million property and income tax cut package Wednesday. 

The measure will reduce the top individual and corporate income tax rates to 5.84% by 2027. 

It will also speed up the state's plan to phase out taxes on Social Security income and create a refundable tax credit to reimburse property owners for some of the taxes they pay to community colleges.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A Pennington County grand jury has indicted a man on a second-degree murder charge stemming from a shooting at a Grand Rapids hotel last month. 

Nineteen-year-old Myron Pourier was shot at the Grand Gateway Hotel on March 19 and died from his injuries April 3.

 Quincy Bear Robe, also 19, was arrested the day of the shooting after investigators interviewed witnesses. 

He originally was charged with aggravated assault and committing a felony with a firearm. 

The firearm charge still stands, but the assault charge has now been upgraded to murder. 

A preliminary hearing was canceled after the grand jury made an indictment.

The Alliance Poverty Task Force will be hosting Bridges Out of Poverty: Community Lens at the Alliance High School Commons area on Thursday, June 9 @ 9:00 – 3:00. Bridges Out of Poverty is a national program to help a community understand and alleviate poverty. Participants review poverty research, examine a theory of change, and analyze poverty through the prism of the hidden rules of class, resources, family structure, and language.

Our group hosted Bridges Out of Poverty: Individual Lens in Alliance in June, 2021, and Bridges, Institutional Lens in Scottsbluff last October. This is the third program in the series, and the fourth program, Bridges: Policy Lens will be held in Scottsbluff in October.

Jim Ott from aha!Process, the Bridges organization, will be the speaker and program facilitator. The Individual and Institutional lenses covered in the first two days of Bridges workshops are used as a basis for the third Bridges workshop, which looks at poverty’s barriers through the lens of the community. It is an opportunity for not only information and techniques, but to put the skills we’ve learned into practice and continue the real task of building a Bridges Community. The building blocks of putting the work into action will happen at this session.

- Getting Ahead evaluation results and CharityTracker outcomes

- Identifying cocreators, catalysts, and backbone organizations

Poverty In Our Area: 'Bridges Out of Poverty' program to be held in Alliance

News Release Nebraska Alzheimer's Association

On April 12, the Alzheimer's Disease and
Other Dementia Support Act, was passed unanimously by the Legislature. It is
now on its way to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law. This bill will
allow for the Nebraska State Plan for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias
to be updated and improved, enabling our state to better prepare for its
growing aged population.&nbsp;

There are currently 35,000 Nebraskans over the
age of 65 living with Alzheimer’s. That number is expected to grow nearly 15%
in the next three years, reaching 40,000 in 2025. 1 in 3 seniors will die with Alzheimer’s
or another dementia. 

“We would like to thank the members of the Unicameral for
passing this important legislation that will lead to improvements in the way
Nebraskans living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias are cared for and
ultimately, kept safe’,” says Nick Faustman, Public Policy and Advocacy
Director for the Alzheimer’s Association Nebraska Chapter. “We were proud to
work with our advocates and partners across the state to help make this
possible, and we look forward to continue working on issues related to
Alzheimer’s and other dementia in the months and years ahead.”

The Alzheimer’s Association worked with other non-profit
organizations and care providers to help pass the bill. Advocates from across
the state supported these efforts by contacting their legislators to explain
why this law is so important in planning for the future well-being of
Nebraskans with Alzheimer’s and dementias.

Nebraska passes Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Support Act

Chadron — Local law enforcement officers in Chadron made 67 stops during the national U Drive. U Text. U Pay. high-visibility enforcement campaign that ran April 4-10. The campaign aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of Distracted Driving in Nebraska.

Of those stops, 11 motorists were issued citations for various offenses including speeding, stop signal violations, driving while revoked, and vehicle registration violations. Eight officers with the Chadron Police Department participated in the campaign.

There were 3,924 drivers involved in distracted driving crashes in Nebraska in 2020. 233 people lost their lives in traffic crashes and 19 of those fatalities were due to a distracted driving crash. 7,386 Nebraskan’s were seriously injured in a distracted driving crash in the past five years.

According to NHTSA, between 2012 and 2019, 26,004 people died in crashes involving a distracted driver. While fatalities from motor-vehicle crashes decreased slightly from 2018, distraction-related fatalities increased by 10%. NHTSA also reported that the number of deaths linked to driver distraction was 3,142 nationwide, or almost 9% of all fatalities in 2019. This represents a 10% increase over the year 2018, or 284 more fatalities. The distraction figure was the largest increase in causes of traffic deaths reported for 2019.

“We are seeing far too many injuries and deaths associated with texting, messaging, and other forms of distracted driving,” said Sgt. Young. “I’m glad the Chadron Police Department was able to focus in on this issue and to let drivers know that these behaviors are dangerous, illegal, and won’t be tolerated. Remember, if you’re driving, your hands need to be on the wheel, your eyes need to be on the road, and your concentration needs to be on the task of driving, all the time.”

While the high-visibility enforcement mobilization is over for now, the Chadron Police Department wants motorists to remember the dangers of texting and distracted driving beyond the enforcement effort. “My number one priority is ensuring our roads and streets are safe for everyone,” said Sgt. Young. “I only ask for every motorist to do their part to help me, however they can.”

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.&nbsp; — During the evening hours of Friday, April 8, investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted alcohol inspections in Keith County.

In total, 14 businesses were inspected. Two of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor, for a non-compliance rate of 14 percent. All of the businesses checked the minor’s ID.

Alcohol Inspections held in Keith County

It’s 965 miles from Lincoln, Nebraska to the border town of Del Rio, Texas.&nbsp; But that doesn’t mean our nation’s border crisis isn’t felt a thousand miles away.&nbsp; The Biden-Harris Administration’s failure to secure our broken southern border has caused a host of issues. &nbsp;It’s weakened our national security and overwhelmed our court system. &nbsp;It’s strained our economy. &nbsp;Most devastating, however, is the human cost it’s imposed. &nbsp;Our failure to secure the southern border has enabled sophisticated drug trafficking to run rampant. &nbsp;These deadly drugs are killing Nebraskans, leaving a wake of devastation throughout our communities. &nbsp;

On April 6th, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) issued a letter to all local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to warn them of the uptick in mass-overdose events across the United States.&nbsp; Omaha, Nebraska was one of the seven mass-overdose events in January through March 2022 that caused alarm. &nbsp;In February, four Nebraskans overdosed at the same apartment complex after ingesting cocaine that they did not know was mixed with fentanyl.&nbsp; Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. &nbsp;Drug cartels in Mexico are mixing it into common street drugs to make them cheaper, more addictive, and more powerful.

It’s also making them far more deadly.

Taryn Lee Griffith was just 24 years old when she died of an overdose last December.&nbsp; She took a prescription pill while out with friends, not knowing it was a counterfeit that had been made with fentanyl.&nbsp; “Once you met Taryn, you’d never forget her. &nbsp;She had a personality that drew people’s attention the moment she walked into a room, and a big heart for others,” her father Mike said when describing his daughter. &nbsp;“She took what she thought was a Percocet while out with friends.&nbsp; She didn’t know it was a counterfeit pill containing fentanyl.&nbsp; It cost a wonderful young woman her life and two girls their mother.”&nbsp;

Taryn’s youngest daughter was just six months old when her mother died. &nbsp;She and her five-year-old half-sister will have to get to know Taryn through photos and stories told by family and friends.&nbsp; Illicit drugs rob children of their parents and parents of their children. &nbsp;They rob communities of friends, coworkers, and neighbors. &nbsp;And fentanyl is now a hidden ingredient in these drugs.&nbsp; The DEA is warning all law enforcement to treat every street drug they encounter as if it has fentanyl in it, because it likely does.

Mexican cartels have taken advantage of weak border enforcement to surge the flow of fentanyl in the U.S.&nbsp;&nbsp;In January, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported a 1,066% increase in the amount of fentanyl confiscated in South Texas in the 2021 fiscal year.&nbsp; We’ve seen a staggering increase here in Nebraska as well.&nbsp; Last year, Omaha DEA seized 26 kilograms of fentanyl.&nbsp; That’s more than ten times the amount seized in 2020, and it’s the equivalent of 13&nbsp;million&nbsp;lethal doses.&nbsp;

The problem is only getting worse.&nbsp; As of late March, Omaha DEA had already taken over 100,000 fentanyl pills off Nebraska’s streets this year.&nbsp; That’s more in under three months than Omaha DEA seized in all of 2021.&nbsp; In just one day, troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol found 25,000 fentanyl pills after stopping a vehicle for speeding on I-80 near Lexington.

The influx of fentanyl isn’t limited to our biggest cities.&nbsp; In Phelps County, law enforcement found fake prescription pills that tested positive for fentanyl while investigating two deaths earlier this year.&nbsp; This prompted Phelps County agencies to issue a public safety alert last month to warn residents about the drug.&nbsp; The Nebraska State Patrol and Holdrege Police Department are conducting an investigation to track down the drug supplier.&nbsp;

From 2014 to 2019, most fentanyl entered the U.S. by international mail directly from China.&nbsp; Now, it’s being shipped from China to Mexico, manufactured into pills at illegal labs, and then smuggled across the border. &nbsp;With border agents and local law enforcement overwhelmed by the surge of illegal immigration, it’s easier than ever for cartels to bring fentanyl into the U.S.

The failed policies of the Biden-Harris Administration have exacerbated our country’s drug problem and caused a humanitarian crisis on the border.&nbsp; Instead of tightening border security, the President is making it even easier to enter the country illegally by getting rid of Title 42.&nbsp; The Biden Administration has announced its intention to end the policy on May 23rd.

Title 42 has been in place since March 2020.&nbsp; To protect public health, it authorizes border agents to deport illegal immigrants as soon as they’re taken into custody.&nbsp; Through February 2022, over 1.7 million illegal immigrants have been removed under Title 42.&nbsp; Most Title 42 expulsions involve single adults, the most likely demographic to smuggle drugs into the country.

Ending Title 42 incentivizes illegal immigration by decreasing the likelihood of deportation.&nbsp; As more people attempt to cross the border illegally, there will be additional strain on our federal, state, and local law enforcement along the border.&nbsp; These agencies are already stretched thin. &nbsp;Adding to their workload will further diminish their capacity to stop drug trafficking and will create conditions where drug cartels can thrive.&nbsp;

I urge the Biden Administration to reconsider its decision to terminate Title 42. &nbsp;We should not end the policy without first addressing how to stem the tide of illegal immigration that’s likely to follow suit.&nbsp; If the President fails to do so, our fentanyl epidemic will only get worse.

It’s also making them far more deadly.Taryn Lee Griffith was just 24 years old when she died of an overdose last December.&nbsp; She took a prescription pill while out with friends, not knowing it was a counterfeit that had been made with fentanyl.&nbsp; “Once you met Taryn, you’d never forget her. &nbsp;She had a personality that drew people’s attention the moment she walked into a room, and a big heart for others,” her father Mike said when describing his daughter. &nbsp;“She took what she thought was a Percocet while out with friends.&nbsp; She didn’t know it was a counterfeit pill containing fentanyl.&nbsp; It cost a wonderful young woman her life and two girls their mother.”&nbsp;Taryn’s youngest daughter was just six months old when her mother died. &nbsp;She and her five-year-old half-sister will have to get to know Taryn through photos and stories told by family and friends.&nbsp; Illicit drugs rob children of their parents and parents of their children. &nbsp;They rob communities of friends, coworkers, and neighbors. &nbsp;And fentanyl is now a hidden ingredient in these drugs.&nbsp; The DEA is warning all law enforcement to treat every street drug they encounter as if it has fentanyl in it, because it likely does.Mexican cartels have taken advantage of weak border enforcement to surge the flow of fentanyl in the U.S.&nbsp;&nbsp;In January, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported a 1,066% increase in the amount of fentanyl confiscated in South Texas in the 2021 fiscal year.&nbsp; We’ve seen a staggering increase here in Nebraska as well.&nbsp; Last year, Omaha DEA seized 26 kilograms of fentanyl.&nbsp; That’s more than ten times the amount seized in 2020, and it’s the equivalent of 13&nbsp;million&nbsp;lethal doses.&nbsp;The problem is only getting worse.&nbsp; As of late March, Omaha DEA had already taken over 100,000 fentanyl pills off Nebraska’s streets this year.&nbsp; That’s more in under three months than Omaha DEA seized in all of 2021.&nbsp; In just one day, troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol found 25,000 fentanyl pills after stopping a vehicle for speeding on I-80 near Lexington.The influx of fentanyl isn’t limited to our biggest cities.&nbsp; In Phelps County, law enforcement found fake prescription pills that tested positive for fentanyl while investigating two deaths earlier this year.&nbsp; This prompted Phelps County agencies to issue a public safety alert last month to warn residents about the drug.&nbsp; The Nebraska State Patrol and Holdrege Police Department are conducting an investigation to track down the drug supplier.&nbsp;From 2014 to 2019, most fentanyl entered the U.S. by international mail directly from China.&nbsp; Now, it’s being shipped from China to Mexico, manufactured into pills at illegal labs, and then smuggled across the border. &nbsp;With border agents and local law enforcement overwhelmed by the surge of illegal immigration, it’s easier than ever for cartels to bring fentanyl into the U.S.The failed policies of the Biden-Harris Administration have exacerbated our country’s drug problem and caused a humanitarian crisis on the border.&nbsp; Instead of tightening border security, the President is making it even easier to enter the country illegally by getting rid of Title 42.&nbsp; The Biden Administration has announced its intention to end the policy on May 23rd.Title 42 has been in place since March 2020.&nbsp; To protect public health, it authorizes border agents to deport illegal immigrants as soon as they’re taken into custody.&nbsp; Through February 2022, over 1.7 million illegal immigrants have been removed under Title 42.&nbsp; Most Title 42 expulsions involve single adults, the most likely demographic to smuggle drugs into the country.Ending Title 42 incentivizes illegal immigration by decreasing the likelihood of deportation.&nbsp; As more people attempt to cross the border illegally, there will be additional strain on our federal, state, and local law enforcement along the border.&nbsp; These agencies are already stretched thin. &nbsp;Adding to their workload will further diminish their capacity to stop drug trafficking and will create conditions where drug cartels can thrive.&nbsp;I urge the Biden Administration to reconsider its decision to terminate Title 42. &nbsp;We should not end the policy without first addressing how to stem the tide of illegal immigration that’s likely to follow suit.&nbsp; If the President fails to do so, our fentanyl epidemic will only get worse.

SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol has cited a Kansas man for motor vehicle homicide after a two-vehicle crash claimed the life of an Alliance woman Sunday.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. Sunday, near Alliance on Highway 2. A Ford Escape, driven by Blythe Boness, 22, of Alliance, was traveling eastbound on Highway 2 when it was struck by a westbound Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Ryan McElroy, 36, of Salina, Kansas. The collision caused the Escape to roll into the ditch, ejecting Boness. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

McElroy was extricated from his vehicle by the Alliance Fire Department and flown to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff with serious injuries. McElroy remains at the hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Following investigation, McElroy has been cited for motor vehicle homicide, willful reckless driving, DUI – 3rd&nbsp;offense, possession of an open alcohol container, and driving under suspension. Once released from the hospital, he will be lodged in jail.

Flags in Nebraska to be lowered in honor of fallen Elwood Fire Chief

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol has completed a week-long enforcement and education effort focused on distracted driving. The&nbsp;U Drive. U Text. U Pay.&nbsp;initiative was part of a nationwide effort during Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

“April is set aside to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving, but our troopers’ educational efforts continue year-round,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We urge all drivers to make safety their priority, eliminate distractions, and keep their focus on the road.”

During the effort, which ran from April 4 through April 10, troopers arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence and issued citations for speeding (292), no seat belt (11), improper child restraint (5), open alcohol container (16), minor in possession (6), driving under suspension (29), no proof of insurance (26), and use of a handheld wireless communication device (1). Troopers also performed 312 motorist assists throughout the week.

This effort was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $14,160 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office. The Nebraska Department of Transportation offers resources to educate young drivers on the dangers of distracted driving. The bill would have made Nebraska the 26th state to adopt so-called constitutional carry legislation. 

Supporters in Nebraska fell two votes short of the 33-vote supermajority needed to overcome a filibuster led by opponents, which prevents lawmakers from advancing it this year. 

Permitless concealed carry is already allowed in 25 conservative-leaning states. 

The Nebraska bill won initial approval last month but stalled Monday on the second of three required votes in the waning days of the legislative session.

Nebraska permitless carry measure stalls in Legislature

On April 10 at approximately 11:57 a.m. Scottsbluff police responded to a hit and run accident at the intersection of 11th Ave. and East 10th Street.

A red 2005 Ram 1500 pickup driven by 43-year-old Josephina Gonzalez of Scottsbluff was west bound on East 10th Street when she was struck by a 2003 Silver Infinity driven by 21-year-old Katy Yaniria-Castro of Scottsbluff. 

The pickup rolled onto its side as a result of the collision. 

Gonzalez had to be extricated from the pickup by the Scottsbluff Fire Department. She was transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance. 

A juvenile passenger in the pickup was uninjured. Seat belts were not in use. 

"Castro fled the scene south bound on 11th Ave," Scottsbluff Police Captain&nbsp;Brian Wasson&nbsp;said. "Scottsbluff officers located the vehicle a few minutes later. Yaniria-Castro was arrested for leaving the scene of an injury accident without rendering aid or identifying themselves. Yaniria-Castro was wearing a seat belt and was not injured."

No air bags were deployed in either vehicle. Both were towed from the scene.&nbsp;

1 person transported to hospital following Scottsbluff crash

SUTHERLAND, Neb.-A Sutherland couple has been arrested on allegations of felony child abuse.

On April 10, deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office were contacted by the Emergency Department at Great Plains Health.  The hospital reported two children ages three and six years old were currently being treated for a possible drug overdose.   

Deputies responded and found both children were in serious distress.  The parents of the children were not present at the time and a grandparent had transported them to the hospital.

Martin was arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse and placed in the Lincoln County Detention Center. Deputies also met with Joshua Holmes, 30, also of Sutherland, who resides with Martin. Mr. Holmes was arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse and placed in the Lincoln County Detention Center. The children were placed in Protective Custody and a search warrant on the property was conducted. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are likely.
