LINCOLN- The Nebraska Department of Revenue, Property Assessment Division (DOR) reminds property owners that the Nebraska Homestead Exemption Application, Form 458, must be filed with their county assessor between February 2, 2022 and June 30, 2022.

The homestead exemption provides relief from property taxes by exempting all or a portion of the taxable value of the residence. The State of Nebraska reimburses counties and other governmental subdivisions for the property taxes lost due to homestead exemptions.

In Nebraska, a homestead exemption is available to the following groups of persons:

• Qualified disabled veterans and their widow(er)s

Some categories are subject to household income limitations and residence valuation requirements. The income limitations are on a sliding scale. Disabled first-time homestead exemption applicants will need certification of disabled status from a medical practitioner, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, or Department of Health and Human Services, depending on the applicable category of application. The certification can be made on Form 458B, available from an applicant’s county assessor.

Today, the Nebraska Medical Center announced it will cease operating under a crisis standard of care on Monday, February 7.&nbsp; In response to this news, the State has revised its DHM to expire on&nbsp;Monday, February 7, 2022 at 9:00 a.m.&nbsp;to correspond with NMC ending crisis standards of care.&nbsp;&nbsp;Originally, the DHM had been scheduled to remain in place through February 13, 2022.&nbsp;

Gov. Ricketts announces revision to Directed Health Measure

The Alliance Grandview Elementary 4th grade students visited Carnegie for their annual school tour.

 The students visit every year while their artwork, under the direction of elementary art teacher, Sandi Blankenship, is on display. 

Their artwork is a part of the Wonders annual exhibit until February 19.  Over the course of three days, three 4th grade classes tour the upper gallery exhibit, pretending to be art judges. They review their favorite pieces, looking at art elements and detailing other specific items including creating their own drawings by choosing a favorite part of the piece. They learn about what it means to be an artist in the real world and what a professional exhibit is comprised of.

Youth instructor for Carnegie and renowned artist Robert Peltz goes through exercises with the class and gives them a personal artist experience.&nbsp;

Alliance elementary students visit Carnegie Arts Center

CHADRON – Chadron State College will celebrate its 50th&nbsp;High Plains Band and Choir Festival Monday and Tuesday in Memorial Hall. The event will include 151 students from 26 high schools in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, according to the event organizer and Accompanist Bobby Pace. CSC faculty and students assist with two days of clinics followed by a culminating performance.

The public is invited to free performances in Memorial Hall’s auditorium. The first will feature soprano soloist Carol Perry with Pace Monday at 7 p.m. Perry’s recital, No Boys Aloud, will include art songs and musical theatre pieces written by women. The culminating concert, led by Guest Conductor Dr. William K. Wakefield, will be Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Perry, a voice teacher in Detroit, manages a private voice studio and teaches voice at Eastern Michigan University. During the festival, she will teach sessions on breathing and repertoire equity.

Wakefield, Director of Bands Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma, has been the guest conductor for more than 100 all-state and collegiate honor bands, university ensembles, and professional and military bands. He is the recipient of Phi Mu Alpha’s Orpheus Award for significant contributions to Music in America. He also received the Blue Key Honor Society Teaching Excellence Award. In 2013, he was awarded Kappa Kappa Psi’s highest national award, the Distinguished Service to Music Medal.

Dr. Jim Margetts, Dean of Liberal Arts said the longevity of the High Plains Band and Choir Festival is a testament to the shared vision of its founders and all those who have participated throughout the years.

“Many of this year’s participants are following in the footsteps of older siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, and even grandparents. A festival like this also doesn’t continue for 50 years without the support of hundreds of individual high school music teachers and their promotion of the values that those selected for participation in High Plains exemplify, such as hard work, persistence, bravery, and a passion for excellence,” Margetts said.

He said there is nothing quite like CSC’s festival.

“The event celebrates individual success while miraculously melding these disparate talents to produce nuanced performances of beautiful and inspiring music in less than 36 hours. I can’t wait to hear what this year’s participants can accomplish,” Margetts said.

In a video on the<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMZ_0gvw4KE" target="_blank">&nbsp;CSC YouTube</a>&nbsp;channel,&nbsp;Michaela Babic, a teacher at Bridgeport Public Schools, said High Plains has been an important opportunity for students living in a rural region.

“There's something important in that sort of continuity for the community and for the college,” Babic said.

Pace&nbsp;said the festival gives&nbsp;students from small towns the chance to feel the power of being in a large choir.

In the video, Cade Stephenson of Alliance, Nebraska, said it has been interesting going from being a high school student participating in the festival, to being a CSC student who helps manage the sessions.

“I’ve kind of seen both sides of the High Plains festival,” Stephenson said. “[At their high schools] they&nbsp;don't have very large ensembles so when they all come together as one band they're able to hear what a full concert score is supposed to sound like.”

Aubrey Garrett&nbsp;of Alliance, Nebraska, said in the video that although she attended many different&nbsp;choirs and honor bands during high school, none were as important to her as High Plains because it felt like home.

“I think that's exactly what High Plains is meant to do, make music and Chadron feel like home, to anybody,” Garrett said. “Having a chance to talk to somebody in college [who is] doing the exact thing you want to do is a great tool to help you for your future.”

That's because they say it penalizes employees for missing work for any reason and encourages sick employees to report for duty. 

The unions appealed to the secretaries of Transportation and Labor this week to intervene in the dispute after a federal judge blocked their ability to strike over the issue.

 Administration officials say they are monitoring the dispute but didn’t promise any immediate action to the unions.

On Feb. 2 at approximately 3:45 p.m. Chadron police officers and Chadron EMS responded to a rescue call.&nbsp;

Authorities found 68-year-old Linda Johns of Chadron unconscious and unresponsive.&nbsp;

Authorities tried to revive Johns, but were unsuccessful.&nbsp;

"After a review of the initial investigation of the scene, as well as interviews with witnesses, medical experts and a review of medical history, it was determined that Ms. Johns died of natural causes," Dawes County Attorney/Coroner Vance Haug said.&nbsp;

Chadron library to hold chocolate tasting party

Farm operators and agronomists are invited to attend the Nebraska On-Farm Research Network research results update meeting on Feb. 17 at Alliance.

Nebraska farmers conducted over 100 on-farm research studies in 2021, and this meeting is an opportunity to learn from these farmers and network with other innovative producers.

The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at Knight Museum &amp; Sandhills Center, 908 Yellowstone Ave. 

The Alliance meeting is part of a statewide meeting, where crop production-related information from over 100 on-farm research projects conducted by farmers in partnership with University of Nebraska faculty will be shared with producers. These research projects cover products, practices, and new technologies that impact farm productivity and profitability.

Local research projects to be discussed at Alliance will include&nbsp;dry bean population, variety and inoculation studies and the use of nitrogen inhibitors in corn. There will also be a one-hour presentation on&nbsp;“Palmer Amaranth Management in Dry Beans” by Nevin Lawrence, integrated weed management specialist at the Panhandle Research, Extension and Education Center.

The meeting is free and includes lunch served from 11 a.m.-noon to synchronize with the central time zone. Please register at least two days in advance to help in meal planning.

Members of the Cornhusker Fly Fishers Club will teach the two-hour sessions, which are at 6 p.m. March 9 and 2 p.m. March 12.

The workshop, which is open to new and experienced fly tiers, will include all materials and tools needed. Reading glasses are recommended for up-close work. Participants will have the opportunity to tie four to six flies. They also will learn about community resources available to continue tying flies on their own.

The cost is $10 per class. Come to one or both sessions; each essentially will be the same. Different variations of flies will be introduced during each session.

CHADRON – Chadron State College alumnus Andrew Cassiday was recently recognized as the Outstanding Conservationist of 2021 by the Wyoming Association of Conservation Districts.

Cassiday, a Chadron native, graduated from CSC in 2004 after studying Agriculture and Natural Sciences. He served as a teaching assistant in the CSC biology department and graduated in 2008 with a Master of Arts in Education degree. Cassiday said the most meaningful part of his master’s program at CSC was the statistics courses, which he continues to use.

His studies under Dr. Charles Butterfield, former CSC professor and department chair, led to a summer job for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) collecting rangeland vegetation and soil data as part of the National Resources Inventory project. This experience pushed him down the path to his current role as a public and private land conservationist in Sheridan with the USDA NRCS.

Cassiday works primarily with private landowners on conservation projects for agricultural operations. He also works with partner agencies and non-governmental organizations including Northeast Wyoming Invasive Grasses Working Group, University of Wyoming Extension, Sheridan County Weed and Pest, The Nature Conservancy, Wyoming Game and Fish, Sheridan Community Land Trust, Plank Stewardship Initiative, USDA Farm Service Agency, and the Sheridan County Conservation District.

Cassiday and the staff at the Sheridan Field Office provide technical assistance for planning, evaluating alternatives, engineering design and other areas, and offer financial assistance through NRCS conservation programs. They have worked on projects to control invasive grasses, manage grazing land, update irrigation systems, conserve easements, and manage agricultural soil health.

The Sheridan County Conservation District nominated Cassiday as the Outstanding Conservationist of 2021 and the Wyoming Conservation District, a partner of the USDA, presented the award to him in late November.

“It was an honor and a privilege to receive (the award). A lot of fantastic crew members are with the conservation district and their board is a very positive and effective team, so it was an honor to be recognized by them and by the state association,” Cassiday said.

Gerrard to 15 years and 8 months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. Following his prison term, Carlson will serve five years on supervised release.&nbsp; There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp;

Between 2015 and 2019, Carlson sold methamphetamine to a number of people in various communities in central Nebraska.&nbsp; In October of 2018, Carlson sold methamphetamine to a confidential informant working with law enforcement.

This case was investigated by the Central Nebraska Drug and Safe Streets Task Force, which is made up of officers from the Grand Island Police Department, Hall County Sheriff, Hastings Police Department, Adams County Sheriff, Kearney Police Department, Buffalo County Sheriff, Nebraska State Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Axtell man sentenced to over 15 years on meth charges

CHADRON – A passion for teaching and the desire to help people understand and use mathematics has led Chadron State College Assistant Professor Dr. Jung Colen to pursue research into strategies and skills that elementary school teachers can use to build proficiency in a subject that often confounds students and their parents.

In a paper just published in the Journal of the Korean Society of Mathematical Education, Colen and four co-authors analyze the methods a veteran teacher used to teach multiplication to third grade students in Korea.

Research for the paper involved watching hours of video of the teacher and his 24 students engaged in three months of lessons. The researchers’ focus on students’ understanding of basic concepts, problem solving, abstract reasoning, and mathematical modeling led them to conclude that teaching methods and students’ math proficiency are closely related. The results “imply the effects of a teacher’s teaching on students’ mathematical expertise,” the paper concluded.

Colen, a math teacher for more than a decade in South Korea and the U.S., completed her bachelor’s in educational technology in South Korea before earning masters and doctorate degrees in math education in Pennsylvania.

“Teaching has always been my life’s aspiration,” Colen said. “I became interested in mathematics education when seeing that many people hate mathematics.”

Math helps people think logically and critically, but primary school math teaching may contribute to the common dislike of the subject, said Colen.

“Many of us did not experience conceptual understanding when we were in primary schools,” she said. “We were given a rule and forced to use it to solve a problem without knowing why the rule works.”

Studies of countries where students’ math achievements are high suggest the importance of teaching conceptual understanding in addition to rote skills, Colen said.

In their research, Colen and her co-authors analyzed a number of techniques used by the Korean teacher to introduce multiplication to his students. The methods include simplifying problems, making them relatable, and monitoring students’ progress in finding solutions. Students were encouraged to explain to the class how they approached a problem and to think critically about solutions proposed by others. The teacher would also restate and repeat the problem, press students to explain their reasoning, and promote class discussion of the concepts involved.

The methods used contrast greatly with the common practice of having students memorize multiplication tables. While memorizing the tables has some benefits, Colen said without knowing why it works, it is meaningless.

“I suggest my prospective teachers have students consider what multiplication means before they memorize the table. By physical and visual models, young students can understand better. After they have understanding they can easily memorize the times table.”

Colen said she understands the reaction of parents who find they cannot help their children with homework when math is taught in new and unfamiliar ways. But research shows that teaching standards, sometimes known as New Math or Common Core are effective and improve math proficiency, she said.

Although the paper’s research covered only a single class in Korea, Colen said the topic is relevant worldwide, and the practical teaching methods studied not only support the development of math proficiencies, but can also apply to other subjects.

Colen said she and the four other authors of the paper, two based at universities in Korea and two in the U.S., still meet regularly to work on other topics. Of particular interest to Colen is research that might show a more direct connection between a specific teaching practice and students’ math proficiency.

Alliance police seek help identifying thief at local gas station

At its Jan. 24 meeting Chadron City Council approved plans and specifications for the East Tank Recoating Project. This resolution will also authorize a notice to bidders.&nbsp;

Chadron City Manager John Sutherland said this is a water tank project that has been in the works for council.&nbsp;

"It's a project that's needed to be done for some time," Sutherland said. "We knew it was coming on a critical stage and we're able to take action and take care of the problem. It's one of the city's main water tanks. It supplies the good amount of the water we use in the city. It's a critical piece of our infrastructure."

Sutherland said the city will be receiving&nbsp;America Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to help with this project.&nbsp;

"...Funds that were generated from the federal government for relief during COVID pandemic," Sutherland said. "The city is going to invest those funds very heavily, specifically on water system repair or replacement and renewal. So, we've got those plans and specs in place. We'll issue an RFP (Request for Proposal) and get this thing out for construction."

Chadron council approves plans for East Water Tank Recoating Project

Here in the Good Life, we must not take our public safety for granted. &nbsp;We’ve seen other states fail to support law enforcement and underinvest in their corrections. &nbsp;News stories with video footage of rampant theft and outbreaks of violence have become the unfortunate norm in cities like San Francisco and Washington, DC.&nbsp; Residents of these areas feel unsafe, and they’re fleeing to find a better place for their families.&nbsp; More than half of the San Francisco Bay area population plans to leave permanently in the next few years.&nbsp; Washington, DC lost over 20,000 residents from July 1, 2020 to July 1, 2021.&nbsp;

By contrast, cities in states that have demonstrated a commitment to public safety are booming.&nbsp;&nbsp;U.S. News and World Report&nbsp;lists nine Florida cities, and one in South Carolina, among the top 10 fasting-growing places in the United States.&nbsp; Here in Nebraska, the Omaha metro is on pace to surpass one million residents in 2024 after growing again last year.

Nebraska is one of the best places in the nation to raise kids. &nbsp;A big reason why is the safety of our communities.&nbsp; As a state, we fully support the men and women in blue, and we vigorously prosecute crime. &nbsp;We must remain steadfast in our commitment to keeping our streets and neighborhoods safe.

My 2022 budget recommendation to the Legislature puts a priority on public safety. &nbsp;It requests funding for a much-needed replacement of our State Penitentiary.&nbsp; It expands the Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island to better equip the men and women on the frontlines of public safety.&nbsp; It also adds capacity at the State Crime Lab to better process evidence and bring justice to victims of crime.

The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) is decaying. &nbsp;As I noted in my State of the State address, the NSP was originally built over 150 years ago. &nbsp;It suffers from poor security sightlines, outdated technology, inadequate support spaces for programming (as well as food service and recreation), and has a crumbling infrastructure. &nbsp;A modern Nebraska State Penitentiary will improve the quality of life for our inmates.&nbsp; &nbsp;Just last fall, over 1,300 inmates in our State Penitentiary went without running water over a span of three days due to corroded old pipes. &nbsp;

We know that the majority of inmates housed at the State Penitentiary are going to be released from prison after time served.&nbsp; Part of our responsibility to ensure public safety is making sure they’re prepared for that date and aren’t likely to reoffend.&nbsp; Nebraska benefits when our inmates have an opportunity to receive treatment towards that goal.

With a modernized facility, we can also improve the safety of our Corrections officers.&nbsp; A modern facility will have state-of-the-art technology and leverage up-to-date practices to enhance security.&nbsp; How can anyone be against a safer working environment for our Corrections officers?&nbsp; A cleaner, accessible, modern, and more welcoming facility promises to enhance the well-being of those who live there, as well as those who work there.

From other examples involving aged buildings, we know that costs typically overrun initial estimates— sometimes significantly. &nbsp;In 2014, the Nebraska Legislature voted to renovate the State Capital’s HVAC system at a cost of $78 million. &nbsp;Since then, the project’s costs have grown to over $116.5 million. &nbsp;Digging into a nearly 100-year-old building revealed issues unforeseen to contractors at the time of the estimate. &nbsp;Imagine the many unforeseen issues contractors would face if we renovated our 150-year-old State Penitentiary.&nbsp;

We are well beyond slapping a band-aid on the rundown State Penitentiary.&nbsp; It is my intention to replace and mothball the old Nebraska State Penitentiary.

Our Corrections officers deserve the safer work environment that a modern penitentiary would provide. &nbsp;Our inmates shouldn’t be housed in a facility where they must wonder if the water is going to work. &nbsp;And, if our goal is to provide people with the best opportunity for success upon reentry, then we must be willing to admit that the State Penitentiary no longer adequately serves that end and must be replaced.

While improving our prison system, we must also continue to invest in the men and women on the frontlines of public safety. &nbsp;As law enforcement has come under the microscope across the nation, it’s more important than ever to equip our new cadets for the rigors of the job.&nbsp; Law enforcement trainees in Nebraska must meet high physical and academic standards. &nbsp;They’re entering state law enforcement departments that have expectations of impeccable conduct and reputations for integrity and honesty.&nbsp; I’m calling for the expansion of our Law Enforcement Training Center so that the preparation of our new recruits in Nebraska is second-to-none.

My budget also requests the Legislature to allocate $16.9 million to upgrade and expand our State Patrol Crime Laboratory.&nbsp; Advances in technology are constantly generating new tools to fight crime.&nbsp; Investing in the State Crime Lab will ensure the State Patrol has the means to meet increased demand to process evidence.&nbsp;

Pete RickettsHere in the Good Life, we must not take our public safety for granted. &nbsp;We’ve seen other states fail to support law enforcement and underinvest in their corrections. &nbsp;News stories with video footage of rampant theft and outbreaks of violence have become the unfortunate norm in cities like San Francisco and Washington, DC.&nbsp; Residents of these areas feel unsafe, and they’re fleeing to find a better place for their families.&nbsp; More than half of the San Francisco Bay area population plans to leave permanently in the next few years.&nbsp; Washington, DC lost over 20,000 residents from July 1, 2020 to July 1, 2021.&nbsp;By contrast, cities in states that have demonstrated a commitment to public safety are booming.&nbsp;&nbsp;U.S. News and World Report&nbsp;lists nine Florida cities, and one in South Carolina, among the top 10 fasting-growing places in the United States.&nbsp; Here in Nebraska, the Omaha metro is on pace to surpass one million residents in 2024 after growing again last year.Nebraska is one of the best places in the nation to raise kids. &nbsp;A big reason why is the safety of our communities.&nbsp; As a state, we fully support the men and women in blue, and we vigorously prosecute crime. &nbsp;We must remain steadfast in our commitment to keeping our streets and neighborhoods safe.My 2022 budget recommendation to the Legislature puts a priority on public safety. &nbsp;It requests funding for a much-needed replacement of our State Penitentiary.&nbsp; It expands the Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island to better equip the men and women on the frontlines of public safety.&nbsp; It also adds capacity at the State Crime Lab to better process evidence and bring justice to victims of crime.The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) is decaying. &nbsp;As I noted in my State of the State address, the NSP was originally built over 150 years ago. &nbsp;It suffers from poor security sightlines, outdated technology, inadequate support spaces for programming (as well as food service and recreation), and has a crumbling infrastructure. &nbsp;A modern Nebraska State Penitentiary will improve the quality of life for our inmates.&nbsp; &nbsp;Just last fall, over 1,300 inmates in our State Penitentiary went without running water over a span of three days due to corroded old pipes. &nbsp;We know that the majority of inmates housed at the State Penitentiary are going to be released from prison after time served.&nbsp; Part of our responsibility to ensure public safety is making sure they’re prepared for that date and aren’t likely to reoffend.&nbsp; Nebraska benefits when our inmates have an opportunity to receive treatment towards that goal.With a modernized facility, we can also improve the safety of our Corrections officers.&nbsp; Alliance – The Alliance Public Library will host Jody Lamp with “Born To Rein”, a Humanities Nebraska program on Thursday, Feb 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room.

Documentary film co-producer, speaker and author, Jody Lamp, shares how three native Nebraskans and communities throughout the state of Nebraska received national notoriety in one of America’s oldest sports. The program commemorates the lives and accomplishments of native Nebraskans and National Hall of Fame Horsemen, John A. Nerud of Minatare, NE with a Box Butte County connection; and father-and-son Marion and Jack Van Berg of Columbus. The program also features other Hall of Fame horse trainers, jockeys, horses; and explains how America’s first Triple Crown winner, Sir Barton, became part of the U.S. Army Remount Service at Fort Robinson in Crawford. Presentation is accompanied by PowerPoint still images from the film, video clips, and interviews.

What are the most common financial resolutions? Save more money, pay down debt, and spend less. These are all important goals to helping anyone achieve financial security. This week we are looking at paying down debt.

Most people at some time in their lives have trouble managing their finances, and this is especially true for those who live in poverty and have limited resources.

We use debt, or credit, to pay for some things. We have mortgages for our homes, we take out loans for vehicles, or we use credit cards to buy things. Debt isn’t bad unless we let it get out of control.

Credit is the ability of a person to obtain goods or services before payment, based on the trust that payment will be made in the future. Debt is something, typically money, that is owed to others.

Last week NerdWallet released the results of their 2021 American Household Credit Card Debt Study. They found that credit card debt is down, but total debt has increased over the past 12 months. The cost of living is growing faster than household incomes. More than a third of Americans (35%) say their household financial situation has gotten worse over the past 12 months. For those households earning less than $50,000 a year, 47% say their situation is worse than a year ago.

The total debt owed by the average US household is now $155,622. This debt can include mortgages, home equity lines of credit, auto loans, credit cards, student loans and other household debt, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Having debt often creates financial difficulties for families. You have to pay interest, and perhaps additional fees. If you are delinquent, or late in your payments, those interest rates increase and more fees are added. You also damage your credit score and have to pay more to obtain credit in the future.

The debt that is so high it has to be controlled is our credit card debt. An unpaid balance on a credit card can have an interest rate anywhere from 18%-39%, rates much higher than you would pay for a loan at the bank. Americans who have credit card debt (which is about half of those who have cards) owe a total of $6,006! (This is down 14% from last year.)

How can you pay down your debt? Maybe you could take out a loan and pay it all off, then make monthly payments on that loan, which charges a lower interest rate. If your credit is good enough you might sign up for a balance transfer card that gives you an interest-free period. You move all your debt from your other cards, then work on paying off the new card. Don’t wait for the interest-free period to run out!

If you choose to work with the credit you currently have, you have two options to pay down that debt: high interest loans or cards first or small debts first.

• Type of loan (mortgage, car, student, credit card, etc.)

Sort them from high interest down to lowest interest.

If you choose to pay the highest interest debts first, make the minimum monthly payments on the lower interest loans, like your mortgage or car loan. Use any extra money you have to pay down the highest interest loan. This is probably going to be a credit card or payday loan. When it is paid off, you should close that account. Then apply the amount you were paying on it to the next highest interest debt until it is paid off.

Another strategy many people use is called the snowball method. Pay more on the card or debt with the lowest balance, and the minimum on all the rest. Close that account. Then make larger payments on the card with the next lowest balance, continuing until you are debt free.

Remember that these strategies will only work if you stop using those credit cards! Or at least only charge small amounts that can be paid in full every month.

Say you have a credit card balance of $2,000 and a minimum monthly payment of $30. If you pay just the minimum, it would cost you more than $4,400 in interest and take around 18 years to pay it off. By doubling the payment to $60, it would take four years to pay off. You’d save about 14 years and more than $3,600 in interest.

It is time to create a SMART goal! A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based. Remember to prioritize, focus on one goal, then break it into smaller, manageable pieces. Maybe you can pay an additional $15 a month on a credit card until you get your balance down to zero. It is worth it!

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska school leaders are asking state lawmakers to create a student-loan forgiveness program to help nudge more people into the profession, which has suffered major losses during the pandemic. 

Members of the Legislature’s Education Committee reviewed multiple bills that would forgive up to $30,000 in student loans for teachers who agree to work in a Nebraska school. 

Like many states, Nebraska saw many experienced teachers retire early during the pandemic amid the stress of remote learning and possible in-class exposure to the coronavirus.

 Supporters say such measures would encourage education students to stay in Nebraska after finishing college and help offset low starting salaries for new teachers.

Nebraska eyes loan forgiveness program for teacher shortage

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson has endorsed Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers as his replacement once he leaves office next year. 

Hilgers, of Lincoln, announced in December that he would run for attorney general in this year’s election. 

Peterson, a fellow Republican, has said he won’t seek a third term in office. Hilgers has secured endorsements from Gov. Pete Ricketts, Lt. Gov. Mike Foley, several members of Nebraska’s congressional delegation and former governors.

 He’s running in the Republican primary against Jennifer Hicks, a conservative activist from Peru. 

Another candidate is Larry Bolinger, running under the Legal Marijuana NOW Party.

To ensure safe access to the Senior Center located at 212 Yellowstone Avenue, the Alliance Police Department has asked for people to start at the Northeast corner of East 2nd street and Yellowstone Avenue. 

Traffic will line up down East 2nd to Potash Avenue on the North side of the street. Please make sure to leave intersections open. Any overflow traffic will continue on Potash Avenue to East 3rd Street parking along the south curb on East 3rd street.
