ALLIANCE -&nbsp;Western Nebraska Community College's Career Pathways &amp; Advising department will host a job and internship fair, Tuesday, March 1, at the Alliance Campus Community Room.

The event is the second of three job and internship fairs the CP&amp;A department will host, one in each campus community, in the spring semester.

The Alliance fair will be open to all students and community members from 3-6 p.m., and will include a variety of businesses from the Panhandle that are looking to fill open job and internship listings.

Those in the community searching for employment or interested in a new career path are encouraged to attend. The Job &amp; Internship Fair will also provide an opportunity for employers to meet with other businesses and network with a potential future workforce.

"This is a great opportunity for students and community members to learn about local businesses, practice networking skills and potentially find new or more meaningful work," Gail Bower, career pathways advisor, said.

In addition to the fair, WNCC will host a "Work in Progress" event on Friday, Feb. 25, in the Alliance Campus Community Room from 2-4 p.m. The workshop will cover interview techniques, cover letter and resume critiques, and other helpful resources to help navigate the job market and better prepare prospective employees for the fair.

There is no charge for job seekers to attend either the "Work in Progress" event or the fair and no RSVP is required.

Businesses looking to reserve a booth at the Alliance Job &amp; Internship Fair, or the Sidney and Scottsbluff fairs will be charged a small fee.

Nebraska Hospital Association President Jeremy Nordquist said he's hopeful hospitals are starting to see the end of the omicron surge. 

The state said 627 people were hospitalized with the virus in Nebraska Sunday. 

 That number has steadily declined since peaking at 767 on Jan. 28 after a month long surge from the late December low of 445.

NRD to hold annual water education meeting in Alliance

CHADRON – Chadron State College students and employees were directed to evacuate Friday afternoon following a call to the Call Center saying a bomb was on campus. For students who did not have a place to go, the Housing and Residence Life accommodated students at the Assumption Arena on East Third Street.

Director of Housing Austen Stephens said a total of 119 people signed in. He thanked Campus Security for retrieving some essential items including prescription drugs and chargers for medical devices for students. He also acknowledged CSC employees who welcomed students into their homes.

For the next five hours, an average of 50 students were present playing basketball, cornhole, and other games while law enforcement officials searched campus to determine if a device was in place or they could declare the campus clear, according to Stephens

Stephens said staff and representatives of St. Patrick's church provided board games, chairs, and tables to help students be comfortable and entertained. Chadron High School Principal Jerry Mack provided basketballs and CSC provided food.

Additionally, Stephens said the Eagle Theater offered a free movie night in addition to the regularly scheduled event on Sunday.

“The theater was flexible, in light of the emergency, allowing students to bring their assistance animals as long as they were under proper control,” Stephens said.

Osvaldo Cano of Oshkosh, Nebraska, said he appreciated CSC providing food and beverages and a safe environment.

Caydince Groth of Cheyenne, Wyoming, said even though she had to leave her assistance animal behind in the residence halls she was impressed with the organized manner of the evacuation.

While awaiting word for the campus to be cleared, Stephens said Amy Carnahan, a graduate student in Student Affairs, researched the possibility of overnight accommodations at the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department facility on West Eighth Street and the 4H Building at the Dawes County Fairgrounds, if needed.

“I would not be surprised if other businesses and individuals were willing to pitch in and open doors to students. We live in a great community,” Stephens said. “Everyone from President Rhine to emergency responders to Housing staff were marveling at the calm and timely response from students. Their cooperation was essential during a situation like this. We were so proud of our students during this incident.”

The campus was determined safe at 7:47 p.m. Students were able to return to their rooms and work resumed. The men’s and women’s basketball games against CSU-Pueblo scheduled for Friday were played on Sunday.

AVFD hold annual Bosses Night Appreciation dinner

LINCOLN, Neb.-Current Nebraska state senator and candidate for the 3rd Congressional District Mike Flood got another big endorsement.

Over the weekend, former University of Nebraska football coach and Congressman, Tom Osborne, announced his endorsement of Flood for the seat.

"Mike Flood is an excellent member of the Legislature and was very effective as Speaker," said Osborne. "I believe that he would take those same skills to Washington in representing Nebraska."

"Tom Osborne has had a tremendous impact not only on our state, but on every life he's touched," said Flood. "I'm honored to have his support."

Flood will face off in the May Primary against longtime member of Congress, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, who finds himself in a legal battle over contributions to his campaign.

Flood has already received endorsements from Governor Pete Ricketts and former Governor Dave Heineman.

Omaha -&nbsp; The Nebraska Broadcasters Association will welcome Rick Alloway, Gary Kerr and Neil Nelkin into the NBA Hall of Fame on the evening of August 9th in Lincoln, during the 87th Annual NBA Convention. Established in 1972, these inductees will bring the total number of NBA Hall of Fame members to 112.

Rick Alloway earned bachelor’s and masters’ degrees in broadcasting from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. He worked for KFOR radio in Lincoln from 1972-1984 as an announcer, producer, promotions director and operations manager. He then worked as an account executive and as a broadcast producer for a Lincoln ad agency for two years, and also did Lincoln-area high school sports play by play cablecasts from 1972-1981. A full-time UNL faculty member since 1986, he taught the college’s sports broadcasting course for 30 years and was a member of the steering committee that developed the college’s major in Sports Media and Communication. From 1995-2021, Alloway hosted the NBA’s monthly Governor’s Call-In Show. He is a

28-time recipient of the UNL Parents Association recognition for contributions to students, reflecting his continuing, powerful impact on the education and lives of hundreds of future broadcasters.

During his 34 years as a broadcast journalist, Gary Kerr became known as the “Cronkite of the Midwest,” a trusted anchor for his professionalism, intelligence and kind demeanor. His career began as an Ag reporter in Sioux City, Iowa before moving to Omaha in a similar role at WOW radio &amp; WOW TV in 1964. Kerr became the WOWT TV news anchor in 1971, delivering the news of significant events including Omaha Civil Rights and Vietnam War protests, the 1975 Omaha tornado and the 1980’s farm recession. Kerr covered several presidential campaigns and traveled to Germany to report on the 52 Americans held hostage by Iran. Kerr retired from WOWT in 1998, leaving the station with a legacy of producing a “Kerr Story;” a story that is factual, includes everyday people, asks the hard questions, and is told with compelling video and excellent writing.

Since 2000, Kerr has volunteered to help organize monthly education programs at the Omaha Press Club.

In a career spanning more than 50 years and still going strong, Neil Nelkin has excelled in a career that includes his work as an announcer, talk show host, program director, operations manager, station manager and co-owner. Nelkin also worked in operations and engineering for the ABC Television Network in New York. Nelkin’s true love is radio, where he worked with numerous owners and managers at successful radio stations in North Platte, Ogallala, Lincoln and Omaha. Nelkin is perhaps best known for his unique ability to identify and groom talent. Referred to by many as the “Godfather of Radio,” Nelkin is revered by deejays, talk show hosts and sports play-by-play announcers whom he coached and trained to go on to achieving their own level of significant success, in Nebraska and far beyond. He continues to stay active in Omaha radio, at both NRG Media and at Walnut Media. His tireless devotion to broadcast excellence is unmatched.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Four people have been arrested after several stolen vehicles and guns were recovered at a storage facility in Rapid City.

 Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle that was found by its owner Wednesday. 

 Police later located seven or more vehicles and five firearms in storage units. 

The vehicles include motorcycles and side-by-side utility vehicles.

 Police have not released the names of those arrested.

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Theatre Department will present Crimes of the Heart, a comedy, Feb. 17-19 at 7 p.m., Feb. 20 at 2 p.m., and Feb. 25-26 at 7 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre. Interim Director of Theatrical Performances David Craven said the story begins when the Magrath sisters, Lenny, Meg, and Babe, gather at their grandfather's home in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, to try to fix their problems. The play, by Beth Henly, is about the sisters trapped in the expectations of other people and trying to figure out who they really are.&nbsp;

“Throw in their obnoxious cousin Chick, lawyer Barnette, and old flame Doc Porter, and you have a formula for two hours of fun and self-discovery,” Craven said.

Sam LaRive, who portrays Doc, said it is rare to have the opportunity to perform in a show with a perfect balance of drama and comedy.

Halle Smith, who plays Lenny, said the process has been different than other productions.

 — A political heavyweight, the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce, is 
weighing in on the sticky issue of how many gambling casinos should be 
allowed in the state.

In
 a 23-8 vote, the Nebraska Chamber’s board of directors voted Thursday 
to oppose any effort by state legislators to limit the number of casinos
 by geography. It’s the first time the business organization has taken a
 stand on the gambling issue.

The
 vote comes as a legislative committee is wrestling with whether or not 
to limit the number of casinos in Nebraska to the state’s six horse 
racing tracks or allow more.

Voters approved casino gambling in November&nbsp;2020, opening the floodgates to casino proposals. Seven new locations are proposed: Bellevue, Gering, Kimball, Norfolk, North Platte, Ogallala and York.&nbsp;

A
 bill now under discussion would require any new casinos, beyond those 
at the racetracks, to be at least 50 miles from an existing racetrack. 
That would bar new casinos in Bellevue, York and Norfolk because they 
are too close to existing tracks. One proposed amendment would make the 
distance 75 miles, except around the state’s three largest counties: 
Douglas, Lancaster and Sarpy.

Dirk
 Petersen of Norfolk, a former president of the Nebraska Chamber, said 
now that casinos are legal, they should have the same free enterprise 
rights as any other business.

“I
 think it’s an overreach of government when they try to dictate where 
private businesses should be located,” said Petersen, a retired 
executive of Nucor, the huge steel mill outside Norfolk.

But
 a leading opponent of expanded gambling, Pat Loontjer of Gambling with 
the Good Life, called that kind of thinking “insanity.” She supports 
limiting the state to six casinos at the existing racetracks in Omaha, 
Lincoln, Grand Island, Columbus, South Sioux City and Hastings.

“Bringing this kind of gambling into Nebraska is a whole new avenue of destruction,” Loontjer said.&nbsp;

“Let’s
 wait a couple of years, see how it impacts those communities and family
 and taxes,” she said, “and then see if we want to inundate the state 
with casinos.”

At
 a recent executive session on the casino issue, members of the 
Legislature’s General Affairs Committee, which oversees gambling 
legislation, appeared widely split on the desired number of casinos and 
whether there should be geographic restrictions.

State
 Sen. Tom Briese of Albion, who chairs the committee, said Friday that 
he thinks the committee is veering away from the idea of a 50- or 
75-mile restriction. Both ideas are associated with Legislative Bill 
876, a proposal to regulate casinos in the state, including the number 
allowed.

Briese
 said he doesn’t believe the Legislature can allow only six casinos but 
said it can provide “reasonable criteria” for any new racetrack-casino 
proposals.

The
 senator said that his committee is still hashing out ideas but that he 
thinks members are leaning toward requiring any new facility to do an 
in-depth feasibility study to determine the need for a casino and how it
 might affect nearby racetrack-casinos and the community.&nbsp;

While
 some gambling opponents, like Loontjer, have called for a “moratorium” 
on new casinos, Briese said such a feasibility study would serve to slow
 down additional development while the study is conducted and while the 
State Racing Commission considers whether to approve new “racinos,” the 
term for combined casinos-racetracks.

He said that because voters approved casino legalization by such a wide margin, it appears they support more than six casinos.

Briese
 said he would also back regulations that require a minimum number of 
horse races a year and perhaps a minimum investment in a new racino. 
Legalizing casino gambling was billed as a way to save the flagging 
horseracing industry in Nebraska, he said, and he wants to ensure that 
is the result.

Petersen,
 who is involved in the redevelopment of downtown Norfolk and owns 
buildings there, said he supports the construction of a racino in his 
community.

A
 subsidiary of Ho-Chunk Inc., the economic development wing of the 
Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, has purchased land for a ⅝-mile track in 
Norfolk, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://norfolkdailynews.com/news/casino-race-track-plans-confirmed-for-ho-chunk-s-norfolk-property/article_96b3cc10-e5ab-11eb-a089-3773cbe995ec.html">Norfolk Daily News</a>. The subsidiary, Warhorse Gaming, will also manage casino operations at existing tracks in Omaha, Lincoln and South Sioux City.

&nbsp;Petersen said a casino will benefit many businesses in Norfolk, including restaurants and hotels.

&nbsp;“People are going to go to a town that has a casino. If we don’t have one, we miss out,” he said.

Neb. chamber: Let free market decide how many casinos

Critics of Gov. Pete Ricketts' call for the Nebraska Legislature to fund a new prison argue the money would be better invested in programs with proven track records for reducing crime and preventing people from entering the criminal justice system. Fran Kaye, a retired professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a 25-year prison volunteer, said mental-health programs, addiction treatment and job-training programs can reduce crime and make communities safer. "Prisons are really kind of an awful idea, when you come to think about it," Kaye remarked. "I mean, you don't want to be in a position where you're punishing people after they've done something wrong. You don't want them to do wrong in the first place." Supporters say the proposed 1,500-bed prison, listed as a $240 million line item in an&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=46975" target="_blank">appropriations bill</a>, will create jobs and is necessary to address the state's overcrowded corrections population. Kaye cites&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aclunebraska.org/sites/default/files/statehouse_to_prison_report_final.pdf" target="_blank">research</a>&nbsp;showing Nebraska can end overcrowding by limiting the use of stacked sentencing and getting more people back into communities through diversion programs and parole. She added Nebraska is not a wealthy state, and only developers will benefit if lawmakers approve a project with a quarter-billion-dollar price tag. "You get as much money for building a preschool as you do for building a prison," Kaye pointed out. "Why don't we build more treatment centers? You get as much money for building a treatment center as you do for a prison. Why don't we build more job-training centers?" Pointing to the state's high recidivism rate, Kaye said Nebraska has done a poor job helping people who have served time heal and re-enter society as contributing community members. She believes building another facility will not make those communities safer, in part because prisons create an environment known to lead to violent behavior. "Fear, shame, isolation, exposure to violence, powerlessness," Kaye outlined. "What do prisons create? Why in the world would we spend all that money on an institution that is best at creating violence, and is lousy at healing?"

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Attorneys for U.S. Rep Jeff Fortenberry argue in court filings that the Nebraska Republican was confused, rather than lying, when he was questioned by FBI agents over a contribution to his campaign.

 In several pre-trial briefs filed Friday, Fortenberry's attorneys asked that his full statement to the FBI be played for jurors, and said they want to call an expert on memory. 

A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in Los Angeles in Fortenberry's case.

 He's charged with misleading federal authorities who were investigating an illegal contribution to his campaign from a foreign national. 

A trial date for the nine-term congressmen has not been set.

Governor Pete Ricketts has announced the launch of the Nebraska Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF).&nbsp; Nebraska received $50 million from the federal government to create the program. &nbsp;The funds were allocated to Nebraska as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. &nbsp;Subject to eligibility requirements, assistance is available to Nebraska homeowners who’ve experienced pandemic-related financial hardships resulting in delinquent mortgage payments, unpaid property taxes, or an inability to cover homeowner insurance premiums or other related homeownership costs.

The Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA) is coordinating with the State to administer the Homeowner Assistance Fund in Nebraska.&nbsp; Informed by state mortgage and tax data, NIFA submitted a plan to meet federal guidelines and optimize use of the funds available to Nebraska.&nbsp; Last month, the federal government approved NIFA’s proposal.

Gov. Ricketts announces launch of Homeowners Assistance Fund

LINCOLN –&nbsp;Governor Pete Ricketts announced that he will host “Water &amp; Taxes” town halls in Gering and Ogallala on Tuesday, February 15th. &nbsp;At the town halls, Gov. Ricketts will discuss his legislative priorities to protect and develop the state’s water resources and to deliver much-needed tax relief to Nebraskans.

Gov. Ricketts and others will give remarks about the importance of taking action to prevent a drastic reduction in the amount of South Platte River water flowing into Nebraska from Colorado.&nbsp; The South Platte River is an essential source of water for agricultural irrigation in Nebraska, and it supplies Platte River communities with drinking water.&nbsp; Additionally, the Governor will share his plans to protect property tax relief and cut income taxes on hardworking Nebraskans.&nbsp;

The Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus will offer a class about woodcarving beginning Feb. 17. Woodcarving with Archie is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. every Thursday through March 10.

Master woodcarver Archie Silvrants, of Grant, will teach the class, which will provide an overview of everything from chip carving to more advanced techniques – customized for each student.

Master woodcarver to teach class in Ogallala

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem has signed a bill that will ban transgender girls and college-age women from playing in school sports leagues that match their gender identity. 

South Dakota is the 10th state to enact such a law. 

The bill is set to take effect July 1 but could face legal challenges. 

Federal judges have halted enforcement of such laws in Idaho and West Virginia. 

And the Justice Department has challenged bans in other states. Noem touted the ban as ensuring "fairness and a level playing field for female athletes.” 

Opponents have decried the bill as bullying and say it sends a message that transgender people are not welcome in South Dakota.

SCOTTSBLUFF - The Western Nebraska Community College Theatre Arts program is set to start the Spring 2022 Performing Arts season with a showing of The Furies by Aeschylus on Feb. 25-27 at the Platte Valley Companies Performing Arts Center.

The Furies is focused on the chase, capture, and trial of Orestes for the murder of his mother. The story is the first recorded instance of a trial by jury in western history.

"It is considered a classic Greek tragedy, but ends rather well for all parties," Violette Briggs, WNCC theatre instructor said. "We are excited to bring this story to life and get the spring season underway."

The show will premiere on Friday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Judy Chaloupka Theater. Saturday's show will follow suite, also at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday matinee will start at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are available for purchase at wncc.edu/performingarts. General Admission tickets are $10, student/senior/military tickets are $5. Group discounts (10+ tickets) are also available.

The Furies is the first of six scheduled live performances for the spring semester. Patrick Newell and the vocal music department will be showcased at the annual Spring Gala on April 1-2 at the Gering Civic Center. The Spring Band Concert will be held on April 24 in the Judy Chaloupka Theater, and the theatre department will be back in action on April 29 - May 1 for the Spring Play. The month of May will feature an Honors Recital on May 7 for instrumental music students, and the annual Jump, Jive, and Swing, on May 8.

Two ruthless crime leaders, Hal Sapone and Beanie O’Dannon, have finally reached an agreement on bootlegging practices here in Hemingford and have decided to pull together resources to undergo a collaborative effort with criminal endeavors.

Ticket sales go to HCF. The Foundation is looking forward to an exciting 2022 by hosting this community event, constructing the welcome sign with donor bricks in the Hemingford mini-park, offering support to other community betterment projects, and reestablishing mini-grant availability by 2023.

HCF serves the residents of Hemingford and the surrounding area by identifying and supporting the people, organizations, and projects that make Hemingford a great place to live, learn, work, and play. The Foundation is an affiliate fund of the Oregon Trail Community Foundation.

Box Butte County election filings released

Chadron State College is no longer under an evacuation order. College officials and law enforcement lifted the evacuation order at 7:45 p.m. Friday evening.

Local law enforcement and Campus Security, as well as the Nebraska State Patrol searched the entire campus and found no evidence of a threat. 

The residence halls are now open and college business can resume.&nbsp;

"I want to thank the students and employees who took this threat seriously and did the right thing by evacuating campus in a safe manner," CSC President Randy Rhine said. "I am so glad we did not find anything and I truly appreciate the help law enforcement provided. They all responded quickly and worked efficiently to get our campus back to normal."

"A notice to evacuate campus immediately was sent to students and employees at 2:56 p.m. When more information is known, it will be shared."
