Research shows us that more than half of all Americans make New Year’s resolutions. After six months, more than half of those had been abandoned. At the end of the year, only 9% had stuck with those resolutions. Still we keep telling ourselves that a new year is a time to make changes in our lives.

What are the most common resolutions? To improve health and physical wellness, improve mental or spiritual health, improve relationships with others, learn new skills, and take better control of our finances.

All of these are worthwhile goals. Why do we fail? Maybe our goals were unrealistic, much too large. Maybe we made too many resolutions. Sometimes we don’t keep track of our progress, so we lose momentum and eventually give up.

How can we improve our chances of success? First, we should pick only one area to prioritize. Next choose a specific point to focus on. Then turn that specific resolution into a SMART goal.

A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based. Specific means your goal should be clear and narrow. Measurable – what evidence will prove that you are making progress? Attainable – is this something that can reasonably be accomplished? Relevant – does this goal move you toward a larger objective? Time-based – having a reasonable end date helps keep you motivated, especially if you set up a reward.

The biggest problem is that we make our goals too broad. Most of us need to focus more on being specific. What do we want to accomplish? Is it something we, and not someone else, are responsible for? If our goal is realistic and within our control, we are much more likely to stick with it. Most experts recommend that we write the goal down and post it somewhere we will see it every day.

Besides writing down the goal, many people write down their obstacles. Think about what challenges you may face and how you will deal with them.

Get support from others to help you reach your goal. People close to you can ask for updates and offer encouragement. If you feel accountable to them, you are more likely to stick with your resolution.

A goal needs to be time-based; if you have stayed with it for a certain length of time it has hopefully become a habit. It’s time to give yourself a reward to celebrate! Then set a new SMART goal that moves you closer to your overall objective.

I’ve fallen short on vegetables, so I focus my SMART goal there. “I will eat a green leafy salad of 1 ½ cups two days a week for the next month.” Is this Specific? Yes. Measurable? Yes. Attainable? Yes. Relevant? Yes. Time-based? Yes. Can I give myself a reward if I achieve it? Yes. Can I set a new SMART goal at the end of the month that moves me ahead to the larger goal? Yes.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers will kick off a new session expected to focus heavily on how the state will spend more than $1 billion in pandemic relief money, plus debates over prisons, property taxes and state aid for K-12 schools. 

The short, 60-day session will begin with the state flush with cash from federal assistance and higher-than-expected tax collections. 

Lawmakers will also debate contentious issues related to abortion access, gun rights and tax policy. 

Some senators have said they’ll push for income tax cuts this year.

Nebraska Legislature to return with focus on pandemic cash

As we enter a new year, we face new opportunities to strengthen Nebraska. Our state will soon convene for the second session of the 107th Nebraska Legislature. I look forward to the robust debate that will fill the halls of the Capitol over the next few months as Nebraska’s senators work to deliver results for the men and women who voted them into office. These senators come from districts with diverse perspectives, and the legislation they introduce will reflect those differences. However, there are key directives that most Nebraskans back.&nbsp;

Enable Nebraskans to keep more of their hard-earned money.

Our historically low unemployment rate of 1.8 percent is a testament to Nebraskans’ desire to work hard and earn. From teachers to truckers, mechanics to medical professionals, farmers to fast food workers, and every profession in between, our state’s women and men invest their time and effort to better their communities and support their families. Nebraska’s tax code shouldn’t get in their way.

Last session, we provided Nebraskans with a historic level of tax relief – but there is more work to be done.

For example, we provided a tax exemption for 50% of Social Security income that will be phased in over five years. This year, we should increase that percentage and implement it sooner. We also began the process of aligning taxes on job creator income with those of taxes on individual income. I believe that needs to continue in order to fully unleash our economy.

Last legislative session, I supported LB 408 – The Property Tax Request Act. This bill would have limited the annual growth of local government property taxes to 3% -- a reasonable limit that would have prevented property tax bills from increasing faster than Nebraska’s families can afford. We nearly advanced the bill, falling just four votes short of moving it forward. Let’s do better for Nebraska this year and get property taxes under control.

As the state works to deliver even greater tax relief, it is critical that we also control government spending at all levels. We’ve done it at the state level. Before I took office, state spending was growing at 6.5% a year—an unsustainable pace. During my time as Governor, the state has successfully limited the average annual rate of growth to 2.5%. For the sake of Nebraska’s next generation, we should find ways to spend responsibly for years to come.

That includes this year, when we have the unique task of deciding how to spend funds Nebraska received as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021. It’s imperative that these ARPA dollars go toward one-time projects. This is one-time money and must be spent as such. Otherwise, we risk growing government spending at an untenable rate. These funds can help our state better recover from COVID’s economic impact, strengthen public health and safety, and continue to invest in our skilled workforce. This is an excellent opportunity to fund infrastructure projects across our state that will benefit Nebraskans for generations to come.

For liberty to flourish, Nebraska’s elected officials must continue to protect public safety.

We have an obligation to update our aging state penitentiary. The existing building was constructed in 1869. Although it’s seen moderate updates over the years, the correctional facility is outdated. For the safety of our correctional officers and inmates alike, we must pursue a modern state penitentiary.&nbsp;

Preventing floods and ensuring access to water for future generations to come is also an important component of Nebraska’s public safety. The Legislature’s Statewide Tourism and Recreational Water Access and Resource Sustainability (STARWARS) Special Committee has been working to identify funding opportunities to enhance areas of Nebraska – not only for tourism and economic development, but also for water sustainability and flood control. Investing proactively in our water security will mitigate the hardship, destruction, and loss of life that can accompany floods, as we know all too well.

There’s also opportunity to pass legislation that would strengthen protections of our God-given freedoms. Most fundamental is the right to life. There’s also the right to keep and bear arms, the right to religious freedom, and the right to free speech. Although these rights are already enshrined in the Constitution – and in our State Constitution — they are under attack in varying degrees. We should introduce and advance legislation that ensures Nebraskans retain all of their fundamental rights, both now and in the future.

We have a tremendous opportunity this session to enact meaningful change for our state’s communities, families, and children. I look forward to sharing more of my vision for Nebraska during my annual State of the State address on January 13.

Unlike recent years, however, they’ll be flush with money from the federal government and stronger-than-expected state tax collections.

 Among the biggest issues will be pandemic-related measures, the budget, taxes, prison reform and social issues such as abortion and gun rights.

5 things to know as Nebraska lawmakers begin new session

 Most of the snowfall is expected from the mid morning through the mid afternoon tomorrow, but light snow could linger in southern Wyoming through Thursday morning.

 The best chance for more than 6 inches or more of snow will be in bands of  moderate to heavy snow that set up from northwest to southeast from the northern Laramie range through Platte, Goshen, and northern Laramie counties in Wyoming, then towards the region in between Scottsbluff, Kimball, and Sidney in Nebraska.

 Blowing snow and strong winds are likely in Carbon/Albany counties Wednesday morning through early afternoon. North winds with gusts to 30 MPH are possible east of the Laramie range during the day on Wednesday which could lead to blowing snow. Winds will increase again on Thursday afternoon, especially further west.

Winter Storm Warnings, advisories issued for Panhandle 

SCOTTSBLUFF&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating a shooting that occurred Monday evening in Kimball. A suspect is in custody.

At approximately 8:45 p.m. MT, the Kimball Police Department requested assistance from NSP after responding to a shooting at 602 S. Oak Street in Kimball. The victim, identified as Tessa Ghering, 21, was found deceased from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. A suspect, identified as William Serrano, 36, was taken into custody. 

Serrano has been lodged in Scotts Bluff County Jail on a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Two children were inside the home at the time of the incident. Both were unharmed and are now in the custody of their mother.

The Nebraska State Patrol is the lead investigating agency, with assistance from the Kimball Police Department and Kimball County Sheriff’s Office.

Lincoln – Due to high sales, officials in the states participating in the Mega Millions® Lotto game have increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Tuesday, January 4 drawing to $253 million or $175.6 million with the cash option selected.

LINCOLN&nbsp; — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) are encouraging Nebraskans to make safe driving a resolution for 2022. This follows a positive trend on Nebraska roadways in 2021, which recorded the fewest roadway fatalities in five years.

There were 220 fatalities on Nebraska roads in 2021, a 5% reduction from the total of 233 in 2020. Last year marks the second consecutive yearly reduction in traffic fatalities across the state, down 11% from the total of 248 in 2019.

“This is promising news to have, indicating that Nebraskans are continuing to make safer choices while driving. Let’s continue this positive trend and see more lives spared on our roads,” said John Selmer, Director of NDOT.

To keep the trend moving in the positive direction, NSP and NDOT encourage all motorists to follow traffic safety laws, put the phone down while driving, always drive sober, and always wear a seat belt.

“Our goal will always be to move toward zero fatalities, but this positive trend is encouraging,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “It’s impossible to attribute the reduction to one factor, but safe driving of those who share our roadways will always have the biggest impact.”

As the winter weather season continues, all motorists are encouraged to practice safe winter driving. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The final 2021 report on a monthly survey of business leaders in nine Midwest and Plains states shows the region's economy continues to improve going into the new year, with confidence in the economy over the next six months soaring. 

The overall index for December of the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions released Monday grew to 64.6 from November's 60.2. 

Any score above 50 on the survey’s indexes suggests growth. 

The survey’s business confidence index, which looks ahead six months, rocketed from a weak 46.2 in November to 64.0 in December.

 The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

December report: Midwest economy, confidence improve

After more than four hours of meetings with the public in two days, the Sioux County School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to secure financing to construct a new elementary school.

The timeline calls for the district to break ground in 2022 and have the facility open for classes in the fall of 2023. While the board presented conceptual drawings and a preliminary plan that includes six classrooms, support rooms and a second gym to be used as an both an elementary cafeteria and physical education facility and a second high school gym, the final design has not yet been determined. The conceptual drawings as presented come with an estimated price tag of $4.65 million.

After its vote Tuesday, the district will work to secure financing at a projected interest rate of 0.85-1.5% and begin detailed work with the architect to finalize construction plans to take to bid.

The district began discussing its options in June, when the board rejected a proposal to purchase a small cabin for placement at the elementary school to solve ongoing space issues in the building. At the time, the board expressed concerns about the handicapped-accessibility of the Harrison Elementary School. With the knowledge that a wheelchair-bound student is expected to enroll in 2023, the board in June decided to look at solutions that would solve both the space issues and the ADA compliance issues.

After working with an architect and a finance firm, a steering committee of board members presented its preferred option of constructing a new school next to the Sioux County High School to the public Dec. 27-28. The district would be able to finance construction as presented without putting forward a bond issue. Instead, the district’s 59-cent levy would increase to 73 cents for seven years to fund construction.

“Our levy would be raised for seven years. After the project is paid off, the levy would go back down,” Superintendent Dr. Brett Gies explained.

The district’s low levy makes it possible to pay for construction that way, said Andy Forney, the vice president and public finance banker for DA Davidson, and it makes sense to lock in financing now before interest rates go up.

The Harrison Elementary School is 85-years-old and spans four levels with narrow staircases that make installing a chair lift impossible. Other challenges, such as too narrow doorways and restrooms, also would have to be addressed.

“There are huge ticket items and smaller ticket items to make it (ADA) accessible,” said Dr. Gies.

The audience both nights numbered around 40, with some attending both sessions and others making an appearance at just one of the public meetings. While most in attendance agreed that the district needs to address the ADA issues with new construction, much of the debate was over whether or not to include a full gym in that construction.

The architect estimate puts the cost of construction for classrooms and support rooms at $2.9-3.5 million, but that does not address the need for space for elementary P.E., a lunch room and indoor recess during times of bad weather. Using the high school gym throughout the day for those purposes would be a logistical challenge on many days, staff said, and parents of younger elementary students were concerned about having their students in the same building with high school kids.

Adding the full gym addresses those concerns and provides the opportunity to eliminate late practices for high school students and facilitate more efficient hosting of tournaments, Dr. Gies said. The conceptual drawings also have the placement of the gym in such a way to serve as a buffer between elementary and high school students, and it can be closed off from both buildings so community members could use it in the evenings or on weekends for meetings and events or to exercise.

“You’ve got to build the gym. Our most valuable resource is time. Let’s use our kids’ time wisely,” said patron Scott Schaefer. “I think all of you have done a good job. I think you should all vote yes.”

“We voted for the people at the table. We had an opportunity at election time to elect people who will vote in our best interests. Everybody there is doing the best they can,” he said Monday.

Krein returned Tuesday and again urged the board to move forward.

“This is a long-term decision for this community, and I don’t think there’s anyone here that can’t afford a higher tax for seven years to invest in our kids and grandkids,” he said.

If the price of construction goes up to $4.8 million, the impact on taxpayers would be an extra $143.63 per year on $100,000 of valuation. A construction cost below that number, would lower the tax impact accordingly. Nebraska has more than 280 school districts, and a proposed levy of 73 cents would still rank Sioux County as one of the 50 lowest-taxing districts in the state based on current levies.

Those who voiced opposition to the construction of a gym as part of the project were concerned about tax implications on their ranches, especially in times of low cattle prices or drought. What would calf prices have to be for seven years to allow ranchers to pay for the $4.65 million project, patron Spike Jordan asked, adding that he believes the district must address the issues and avoid a lawsuit.

Father and son John and Jory Gieser also urged the board to delay action. While they agree the district must do something, they did not see the need for another gym, especially if student numbers continue to drop. Jory Gieser asked the board repeatedly to delay the vote to secure financing until the district had a more final construction plan with actual numbers rather than an estimate.

That action, however, would risk missing out on low interest rates and would cost the district in the long run, said board member Joleen Falkenburg. Board members Dave Howell and Shon Whetham noted that the inclusion of a gym - or its size – can be changed as the district prepares bid specs.

Other options the school board reviewed and rejected included:

- The construction of an elevator at the current elementary school. Adding an elevator to the north side of the building still presented problems in how to navigate through the building and did not address other access issues such as the restrooms or solve the ongoing space issues.

- The construction of a separate modular classroom, in which the class that includes a disabled elementary student would be assigned for their entire K-8 career, does not meet the full intent of ADA law because it does not provide full access in the least restrictive environment.

- Construction of a new elementary school on the same lot as the current school was proposed but did not address additional space issues the district contends with at the school.

- Constructing a single classroom at the high school led to the same concerns about not meeting the full intent of the law in the least restrictive environment.

- The board also explored transporting disabled students to other neighboring districts, but were denied those opportunities as districts have reached capacity in their special education programs.

“Every option has been looked at aggressively,” said Falkenburg.

Sioux Co. to secure financing for new Harrison elementary school

United States Attorney Jan Sharp announced that Nicole T. Beattie, 29, of Kearney, Nebraska, was sentenced today in federal&nbsp;court in Lincoln for possession with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of actual methamphetamine and 50 grams or more of methamphetamine mixture. United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Beattie to 151 months in prison followed by a 5-year term of supervised release.&nbsp; There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp;

On October 29, 2020, law enforcement executed a search warrant of Beattie’s residence in Kearney.&nbsp; Law enforcement found Beattie and two others in a room with suspected methamphetamine, a firearm, and drug paraphernalia.&nbsp; Law enforcement also found a case containing two bags of suspected methamphetamine in the residence.&nbsp; A lab confirmed that the substance in those bags was in fact about 381 grams of methamphetamine, of which at least 338 grams was actual methamphetamine.

This case was investigated by the Central Nebraska Drug/Safe Streets Task Force.

LINCOLN&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol took dozens of impaired drivers off the road during the holiday season&nbsp;Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over&nbsp;campaign. Troopers made 60 arrests for driving under the influence.

“Every DUI arrest has the potential of saving lives,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Planning ahead to have a sober driver has the same potential.”

The&nbsp;Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over&nbsp;campaign ran from December 17 through January 1. Troopers and dispatchers from around the state were working overtime throughout the holiday season in an effort to reduce the potential for serious injury or fatality crashes.

In addition to the 60 arrests for driving under the influence, troopers issued more than 700 citations for speeding, including 63 cases in which the driver was traveling at 100 miles per hour or more. Troopers also issued citations for driving under suspension (75), minor in possession of alcohol (27), open alcohol container (35), no proof of insurance (36), no seat belt (17), and improper child restraint (8). Troopers also performed 628 motorist assists during the campaign.

“This was a busy holiday season on the roads, as many people were able to gather with families and friends across our state,” said Colonel Bolduc. “As we get going in 2022, we urge all motorists to be safe as they travel and always have a sober driver.”

On Jan. 1 at approximately 7:45 p.m. the Chadron Police Department and rescue personnel were called to a residence where a 13-year-old Chadron boy was found unresponsive.&nbsp;

The boy was taken to Chadron Community Hospital and Health Services, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.&nbsp;

"An initial investigation of the scene, physical evidence and witness statements lead authorities to believe that foul play is not involved at this time," Dawes County Attorney/Coroner Vance Haug said. "The investigation continues at this juncture and authorities request that anyone who believes that they may have information regarding this situation contact the Chadron Police Department to assist in the resolution of this tragic accident."

Haug said an autopsy has been scheduled in Scottsbluff.

13-year-old boy found dead in Chadron

Ricketts promotes exercise program to kick off 2022

Due to high sales, the Multi-State Lottery Association has increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Monday, January 3 Powerball drawing to $540 million or $384.3 million with the cash option selected.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 38 consecutive Powerball drawings since October 6 without a jackpot winner.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

Because of the high Powerball jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery encourages customers to play within their means. “It’s important for Nebraska Lottery players to remember that no matter how large the jackpot is, the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million,” said Lottery Director Brian Rockey. “Your odds of winning remain the same, regardless of how many tickets are purchased or how many people play.” If you or someone you know has a problem with compulsive gambling, free help is available at problemgambling.nebraska.gov.

Powerball jackpot increased for tonight's drawing

CHADRON – Progress in the construction of the Math Science Center of Innovative Learning (COIL) and achievements of Chadron State College students, employees, and alumni were highlights of 2021.

In June, the COIL project received a $483,500&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12510" target="_blank">Nebraska Environmental Trust</a>&nbsp;grant.&nbsp;Interior work is progressing on schedule, furniture is expected in April, and the $32 million building should be ready to host classes for the Fall 2022 semester.

Student achievements were numerous and varied.

<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12435" target="_blank">Ruth Mencia</a>&nbsp;of Grand Island, Nebraska, was appointed to serve as CSC’s student trustee on the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees

The student newspaper, The Eagle, won its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12494" target="_blank">10th consecutive Best Overall</a>&nbsp;Newspaper in the Northern Plains Collegiate Media Association’s annual Golden Leaf Awards in May. In August, The Eagle tied for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12531" target="_blank">first place</a>&nbsp;in the General Excellence-College Division in the 2021 Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the National Newspaper Association.

In an unusual turn of events, there were two CSC Homecoming coronation ceremonies in 2021, one in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12490" target="_blank">April</a>&nbsp;due to the fall 2020 event being postponed because of COVID-19, and another in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12562" target="_blank">October</a>.

Emily Hansen and Konery Klueber were crowned&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12499" target="_blank">Ivy Day</a>&nbsp;Queen and King before Spring Commencement when more than 300 graduates were honored during&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12493" target="_blank">in-person ceremonies</a>&nbsp;after virtual ceremonies the previous two semesters. Winter Commencement featured a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12598" target="_blank">combined ceremony</a>&nbsp;honoring both bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients. Another in-person ceremony occurred when the college recognized a cohort of master’s education degree recipients in a first-time graduation ceremony in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12529" target="_blank">Alaska</a>.

Undergraduate students Isioma Akwanamnye and Joshua Kruse conducted scientific research with the Nebraska IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12566" target="_blank">INBRE</a>&nbsp;program.

Lelisse “Lily” Umeta of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, earned a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12469" target="_blank">full fellowship</a>&nbsp;to UNMC doctoral program. Her career goal is to become a cancer researcher and work in a translational clinical laboratory where laboratory experiments are carried through clinical trials to the point-of-care for patients.

Seniors in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12577" target="_blank">Social Work</a>&nbsp;program planned and conducted a virtual conference about Forgiveness that also featured an in-person panel discussion among local legal, law enforcement, and healthcare professionals.

Other student achievements included, six students placing in the top 10 of the national&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12523" target="_blank">Phi Beta Lambda</a>&nbsp;online competition, four Army&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12505" target="_blank">ROTC</a>&nbsp;cadets completing Advanced Camp at Fort Knox and one completing Cadet Troup Leader Training, and several students presented during the virtual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12582" target="_blank">Sigma Tau Delta</a>&nbsp;High Plains Regional Conference.

Students also attended a virtual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12465" target="_blank">Meet the Pros</a>&nbsp;conference hosted by the Omaha division of the American Advertising Federation and participated in a wide variety of events to celebrate&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12487" target="_blank">Week of the Young Child</a>.

<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12480" target="_blank">Chancellor Paul Turman</a>&nbsp;traveled to Chadron in April to participate in the ninth annual day of service known as The Big Event. In November, students completed eight service projects for Chadron schools, churches and other organizations during the fourth annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12584" target="_blank">The Mini Big Event</a>.

The college’s annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12486" target="_blank">Rising Sophomore</a>&nbsp;ceremony acknowledged the efforts of students in their academic fields as well as extracurricular activities.

Project Strive TRiO recognized individuals for outstanding effort in the classroom, in athletics, and serving their fellow students with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/projectstrive/student/index.csc" target="_blank">Student of the Month</a>&nbsp;awards.

Faculty, staff, and alumni were also in the news.

During Homecoming, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12567" target="_blank">track press box</a>&nbsp;was named in honor of Dr. Frank Ferguson. Alumni&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12551" target="_blank">Stephanie (Olson) Dantzler</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12549" target="_blank">Mack Rawhouser</a>&nbsp;received the Distinguished Alumni Award, while&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12550" target="_blank">Hilary A. Catron</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12552" target="_blank">Whitney Campbell</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12545" target="_blank">Dr. Jennifer Green</a>&nbsp;were recognized with the Distinguished Young Alumni Award. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12556" target="_blank">Burkhiser-Madsen</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12555" target="_blank">Hanks</a>&nbsp;families were honored with the Family Tree Award.

The Sandoz Center showcased a variety of two-dimensional, three-dimensional art, as well as writing and photography and other creative endeavors by CSC employees in an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12575" target="_blank">After Hours Artists</a>&nbsp;exhibit.

CSC’s Director of College Relations Alex Helmbrecht received the national&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12437" target="_blank">Blue Key Outstanding Advisor Award</a>&nbsp;for 2021 during the organization’s virtual conference.

Grounds Supervisor Lucinda Mays received the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12528" target="_blank">Natural Resources Education Award</a>

<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12473" target="_blank">Dr. Brittany Helmbrecht’s research</a>&nbsp;on first gen students was published, as were two articles by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12565" target="_blank">Dr. Matt Brust</a>, one about regal fritillaries, and a co-authored journal article about&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12563" target="_blank">sagebrush buck moth</a>.&nbsp;Additionally,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12542" target="_blank">Dr. Tawny Tibbits’</a>&nbsp;archaeological data about granite outcroppings in Belize was published.

Adviser to The Eagle, Michael Kennedy, was invited to part of a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12535" target="_blank">Publishers Auxiliary</a>&nbsp;series and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12590" target="_blank">Dr. Ann Buchmann</a>&nbsp;celebrated several successful cases of reconnecting biological relatives through her volunteer DNA research.

CSC students and faculty presented at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12508" target="_blank">Nebraska Academy of Sciences</a>&nbsp;and Dr. Mike Leite discussed the<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12561" target="_blank">&nbsp;geology</a>&nbsp;of Black Elk Peak during the Chadron Public Library’s film festival. High Plains Herbarium volunteer Susan Rolfsmeier gave a presentation about Native American medicinal plants.

High school events hosted on campus included&nbsp;the Fourth Annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12434" target="_blank">Best of the West</a>&nbsp;Virtual Business Invitational and a virtual version of&nbsp;<a href="https://csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12452" target="_blank">Western District History Day</a>. Although the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12449" target="_blank">Scholastic Contest</a>, an annual competition among regional high school students was canceled, plans are to host the event on campus in March 2022.

To keep audiences safe from COVID-19, the Theatre Department presented the comedy drama,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12445" target="_blank">Seventy Scenes of Halloween</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12475" target="_blank">To Die For</a>&nbsp;via live stream only. In the fall, after vaccinations were widely available for the public,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12547" target="_blank">Little Shop of Horrors</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12576" target="_blank">The Whale</a>&nbsp;returned to the stage.

The Graves Lecture Series returned during the fall semester after a break during the pandemic.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12570" target="_blank">Dr. Brittany Helmbrecht</a>&nbsp;shared dissertation findings, Marketing Coordinator Tena Cook, Dr. Dave Nesheim and Dr. Kim Madsen presented a panel discussion about a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12574" target="_blank">commemorative 1938 quilt</a>,&nbsp;and alumni Mary Traphagan presented about the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12572" target="_blank">Holocaust</a>.

A summer exhibit in the Sandoz Center featured&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12513" target="_blank">Lakota constellation</a>&nbsp;stories and the Music department’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12564" target="_blank">Celebrating Women in Music</a>&nbsp;series highlighted female composers and performers throughout the fall and will include continue during the spring semester.

Among other campus news, new administrators included Vice President for Enrollment Management Dr.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12507" target="_blank">Tami Selby</a>&nbsp;and Associate Vice President for Teaching and Learning Dr.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12517" target="_blank">Bruce Mackh</a>.

Chadron State College finalized several new academic partnerships in 2021.

CSC is partnering with Nebraska Methodist College (NMC) to offer a new program in which students can earn a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Health Sciences from CSC and an Associate’s of Science degree in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12423" target="_blank">Respiratory Care</a>&nbsp;from NMC.

A streamlined&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12522" target="_blank">transfer process</a>&nbsp;for Laramie County Community College’s Exercise Science students seeking any of CSC’s five Sport, Fitness, and Recreation Management degree options was launched.

Following the theme of Find Your Story, a variety of new courses and a new major,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12418" target="_blank">Advanced English Studies</a>, was added. Future evolution of the program will likely include courses on professional and technical writing and writing for new genres such as social media and gaming.

In welcomed news, CSC’s freshman class recorded an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/story.csc?article=12540" target="_blank">enrollment increase</a>.
