LINCOLN – Spring turkey hunting permits for 2022 will be available from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission beginning Jan. 10.

Nebraska offers birds in every county of the state. The state also offers plentiful and affordable permits, long seasons, great public access and $8 permits for youth.

Wild turkey hunters in Nebraska enjoy high success rates. In the spring, hunters can purchase as many as three permits, with a bag limit of one turkey per permit.

The spring archery season opens March 25, youth shotgun on April 9, and the regular shotgun on April 16. All spring turkey seasons close May 31.

Dawes County Sheriff Karl Dailey said that his office has received multiple calls from citizens concerned about scam phone calls.&nbsp;

The calls threaten citizens saying they will be arrested for failure to appear for jury duty unless they immediately pay a fine by phone.

Dailey said that this is a scam. He said the Chadron community should not take the threat seriously.

On Jan. 6 at approximately 4 p.m. Scottsbluff Police Officers made a traffic stop near East 14th Street and 12th Avenue. 

35-year-old Amanda Cyr of Scottsbluff and 63-year-old Jose Rosado were arrested for possession of methamphetamine.

"As part of the investigation, a search warrant was obtained and served at a residence in the 1600 block of 7th Avenue with the assistance of the Scotts Bluff County SWAT team," Scottsbluff&nbsp;Operations Captain Lance Kite said.&nbsp;

35-year-old Dillon Deines of Scottsbluff was arrested for possession of methamphetamine. 23-year-old Raquel Nevarez of Morrill was arrested for failure to appear on a warrant. 

30-year-old Marcos Martinez of Lyman was apprehended on a Goshen County Wyoming warrant of burglary. 33-year-old Jesse Dean of Scottsbluff was arrested on a warrant, discharge of a firearm within city limits and intentional child abuse, along with resisting arrest. 

Cyr also received an additional charge of aiding and abetting a fugitive from justice. 

All individuals were transported to the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center.

The Scottsbluff Police Department was assisted by the WING Drug Task Force, the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff Fire Department and Valley Ambulance Service.

The Alliance Arts Council is sponsoring a program by Steven Tamayo on Friday January 14, 7:00 p.m. at the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center.

 Tamayo will also be working in the Alliance elementary schools from January 10-14.

The Friday night performance will feature Steven Tamayo (Sicangu Lakota) and his takoja (grandson), Izzy, presenting the origin story as told by the Lakota people for generations. For centuries, Lakota oral tradition has been the primary means of passing down the virtues and values of the community. Steven and Izzy will share this history through the mediums of story-telling, song, and shadow puppetry. Their presentations will demonstrate the value of story-telling as a means of documenting and revitalizing historic traditions.

Steve Tamayo is a traditional Sicangu Lakota artist whose family originates from the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. After graduating from high school in 1984, Tamayo enlisted in the US Army, serving in the 101st Airborne Division. After returning to Omaha in 1987, he studied the traditional arts of the Umonhon people under Howard Wolf. Tamayo has been awarded numerous awards and honors for his excellence in cultural artistic expression. Some of his most recent work includes buffalo robes for Willie Nelson and Neil Young and a tipi offered to President Obama.

Mr. Tamayo will be conducting an in-school residency in Alliance 4th grade classrooms the week of January 10-14. These 4th grade residency students will have an opportunity to briefly join Tamayo on stage on Friday night to showcase what they learned during the week. Tamayo will then go on to present his solo performance.

Business co-presenters for the in-school residency and the public performance are Harris Sales, Western Nebraska Real Estate, FNIC, FNBO and KCOW/Double Q Country Radio.

The Nebraska Arts Council, a state agency, has supported this arts event through its matching grants program funded by the Nebraska Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. Lincoln – Linda Garey of Crawford won the final $50,000 top prize playing the Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer Scratch game from the Nebraska Lottery.

The winning ticket was purchased at Super C #3 at 3275 Sheridan Blvd. in Lincoln.

One of Garey’s grandsons purchased the winning ticket for her as a Christmas gift before heading out west for the family’s holiday celebration.

Garey said she’s a regular Nebraska Lottery player but this is the first time she’s won anything close to this amount.

After scratching the ticket, Garey and her grandsons went to the local gas station to make sure it was correct. It was and her grandkids helped her make the 450 mile trip from Crawford to Lincoln to cash in the winning ticket.

“Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” Garey said, looking at her grandson. “I’d say it’s an appropriate ticket.”

A $5 Scratch game, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer offered players a chance to win prizes from a free $5 ticket to $50,000. The chances of winning $50,000 were one in 104,000, while the odds of winning any prize were one in 3.68.

The season opened Jan. 2. Excellent snow tracking conditions likely helped hunters find success during the season.

In accordance with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s management objective, the harvest of mountain lions allows the population to remain resilient and healthy, while halting growth or moderately reducing the population size. “This maintains the population density in the Pine Ridge at a similar level to that of other states that allow mountain lion hunting,” said Sam Wilson, carnivore and furbearer program manager for Game and Parks.

Mountain lion season ends with four harvested in Pine Ridge

Wally A. Seiler has announced that the Darold A. Newblom Foundation is now accepting applications for grants and scholarships which will be given by the foundation in May, 2022. Seiler serves as Secretary-Treasurer for the foundation which was established under the terms of the Last Will and Testament of the late Mr. Newblom.

The bulk of the Newblom Estate was given to the foundation to support activities for the moral, mental, intellectual and physical development of young men and women in Box Butte and Dawes Counties, Nebraska; to provide scholarships in assisting students in obtaining an education; and to assist in the founding, equipping and maintaining of associations or institutions engaged in the advancement of learning. This year will be the thirty-second year during which grants and scholarships from this foundation have been given.

Mr. Newblom, a native of western Nebraska, operated the family’s farm near Hay Springs, Nebraska, until poor health forced him to retire in 1980. Following his retirement, he moved to Alliance where he continued to reside until his death on December 15, 1988.

Wally A. Seiler has announced that the Darold A. Newblom Foundation is now accepting applications for grants and scholarships which will be given by the foundation in May, 2022. Seiler serves as Secretary-Treasurer for the foundation which was established under the terms of the Last Will and Testament of the late Mr. Newblom.The bulk of the Newblom Estate was given to the foundation to support activities for the moral, mental, intellectual and physical development of young men and women in Box Butte and Dawes Counties, Nebraska; to provide scholarships in assisting students in obtaining an education; and to assist in the founding, equipping and maintaining of associations or institutions engaged in the advancement of learning. This year will be the thirty-second year during which grants and scholarships from this foundation have been given.Individuals whose educational plans and organizations whose goals coincide with the purposes for which this foundation was established should obtain application forms from Seiler by calling him at (308) 760-4693. Applications for all funds to be awarded this year must be submitted to the foundation’s Board of Directors by March 31, 2022. CSC announces Dean’s and President’s lists 

The chairman of Wyoming’s U.S. Commission on Civil Rights advisory committee will be the featured speaker during presentations at Mid-Plains Community College campuses in North Platte and McCook Jan. 17.

Dr. Robert Byrd will speak at 11 a.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the North Platte Community College South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., North Platte.

His presentation, which will coincide with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is free and open to the public. It will focus on the motives and dreams of people of color who migrated across the U.S. during the Westward Expansion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Following his talk in North Platte, Byrd will give the same presentation at 2 p.m. in the Weeth Theater in Tipton Hall in McCook.

Byrd is no stranger to the community college system. He graduated from Central High School, in Cheyenne, Wyo., in 1967 then attended what is now Western Nebraska Community College, in Scottsbluff, on an athletic scholarship.

In 1969, he transferred to the University of Wyoming, in Laramie, Wyo., to continue his studies in dental medicine. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology and Cell Biology from UW and subsequently obtained a Doctorate in Dental Surgery degree from Meharry Medical College, in Nashville, Tenn.

Byrd practiced for 35 years while also serving as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and Army National Guard. His duties over the years included base dental surgeon and state surgeon.

Byrd completed many overseas tours in South America, Europe and Iraq. He achieved the ranking of colonel before retiring “honorably” from the military after 25 years.

Other highlights from Byrd’s career include serving as chief of staff of the Sheridan VA Medical Center, in Sheridan, Wyo. and as chief clinical instructor for Northern Wyoming Community College.&nbsp;

Byrd is a trained and certified instructor of forensic medicine and dentistry through the Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. He is also a retired fellow with the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute.

Additionally, Byrd has been a member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States and the American Society of Forensic Odontology.

He has been a part of a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs bioethics committee addressing long-term care, suicide and violence prevention, and in his current role, assists the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights with its fact-finding, investigative and information dissemination functions.

So far, more than two dozen of 38 posted proposed bills for the session deal with medical and recreational marijuana. 

It’s the second session for legislators since South Dakota voters approved both medical and recreational marijuana in the 2020 election. 

The passage of recreational marijuana was legally challenged by Gov. Kristi Noem and was ultimately struck down by the state Supreme Court.

 Legislators are expected to consider revisions to the medical cannabis law and take up Senate Bill 3 which would legalize recreational possession of one ounce or less of marijuana by a person 21 or older.

Vaccines remain the best public health measure to protect people from COVID, slow transmission, and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging.

“We live in an incredible country with many freedoms and choices to keep ourselves, our families, our communities, and our country healthy and safe. As we enter another year in a currently heightened pandemic state, please exercise your right to get vaccinated. If you’ve been vaccinated, get boosted. Please do it now,” said Kim Engel, Panhandle Public Health District Director.

PPHD: Panhandle virus cases increasing

CHADRON, Neb. (AP) — The preliminary report on a Chadron plane crash that killed three people in northwest Nebraska in November doesn’t identify the cause of the crash. 

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a report released Wednesday that the plane’s takeoff appeared normal before it crashed on Nov. 21, and no anomalies were found in the plane’s engines or instruments. 

But most of the airplane’s wreckage was consumed by fire after it crashed about a mile and a half away from the Chadron airport.

The federal agency will continue investigating the crash.

Lincoln – Due to high sales, the Multi-State Lottery Association has increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Wednesday, January 5 Powerball drawing to $630 million or $448.4 million with the cash option selected.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 39 consecutive Powerball drawings since October 6 without a jackpot winner. This is the 7th largest jackpot in Powerball history.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

Masks will be required indoors throughout the university’s campuses, including at sporting events. UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green said the mask mandate is needed because of the spread of the highly contagious omicron variant of the virus. The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska has more than doubled over the past two weeks from 744.29 new cases per day on Dec. 20 to 1,734.86 new cases per day on Monday.

Alliance – The City of Alliance has declared a snow emergency starting today at 12:00 p.m. until further notice. 

Residents who live on designated snow routes are asked to please have all vehicles removed from the street to ensure accessibility for the City crews and emergency personnel. Due to the predicted snow totals, crews will be plowing snow on these routes multiple times. 

Per the City of Alliance Municipal Code Ordinance No. 2883, Sec.24-27, please note that it is the duty of the owner of every lot or parcel adjacent to a permanent sidewalk to clean off and remove all snow within 24hrs after snow accumulation, however, snow shall not be moved from lots, driveways, or adjacent sidewalks into the city streets, alley or neighboring lots. Such an offense shall be considered a misdemeanor and is punishable by a $100.00 fine. 

The Alliance Police Department will attempt to make contact with owners of any vehicles left parked on designated snow routes. Any vehicles not moved will be towed.

Bob Peltz will have his work on display in the upper Garwood and Skala Galleries at the Carnegie Arts Center. The exhibit will be up from January 11th&nbsp;until February 12. His artist reception is tentatively scheduled for February 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Please join us in celebrating this wonderful local artist.&nbsp;

Peltz has been Carnegie’s youth art camp instructor for over ten years. He has successfully worked in numerous art fields, including impressionistic painting, abstract design, illustration, portraiture, and cartooning. He is a retired creative director for an advertising firm in Denver, CO working for major corporations. His clients have included the United States Air Force, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, AT&amp;T and United Way. He has won three international and seven national awards for his art, including a White House award for illustration and two international Summit Awards for design. We are fortunate to have him involved with our organization. His teaching skills are excellent and his dedication to Carnegie’s vision is extraordinary.

January 8 will be the last day to see Linda Lacy’s exhibit “Pottery and Paintings". 

&nbsp;Lacy is the owner of Calinda’s Pot shop &amp; Art Gallery in Ashby, NE. Don’t miss seeing this wonderful exhibit of familiar landscapes, wildlife, and pottery. And if you can’t make it by, be sure to check out her shop to visit or set a fun day of pottery making and delicious drinks!

January 11 Carnegie will be displaying Sandi Blankenship’s fourth grade student work in the studio gallery. Their exhibit will be on display until February 19. Due to Covid, these students were unable to come on their annual 4th&nbsp;grade school tour last January. We are excited to have them come for a makeup tour and class with artist Robert Peltz.
