OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — More Nebraska cities are passing mask mandates as the number of virus cases continues to surge across the state, but Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts continues to reject the idea of a statewide mask mandate. 

Kearney and Beatrice passed mask requirements Tuesday to join Lincoln and Omaha as Nebraska cities that require citizens to wear masks. 

Several other cities, including Grand Island and Hastings, are also considering mask rules. 

Nebraska continues to have the sixth-highest rate of new cases in the country. 

Over the past week, one out of every 120 people in the state has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Right now, we’re facing one of the biggest challenges our state has ever encountered.&nbsp; In recent weeks, coronavirus hospitalizations have been rapidly rising with many people severely ill and more deaths.&nbsp; There are over four times as many Nebraskans in the hospital with coronavirus now as there were at the beginning of last month. &nbsp;As hospitals fill with coronavirus patients, doctors and nurses are dealing with the heaviest workloads many of them have ever experienced.

With the rapid rise in hospitalizations, we’ve entered a critical phase in our war against the virus.&nbsp; From October 16th&nbsp;to November 16th, our coronavirus hospitalizations increased by nearly 20 per day.&nbsp; As of November 17th, we’re at 938 hospitalizations.&nbsp; If trends continue, our hospitals won’t have room to provide the standard of care Nebraskans deserve.&nbsp;

It’s urgently important for all of us to take personal responsibility for supporting our healthcare workers, protecting hospital capacity, and slowing the spread of the virus.&nbsp; We can do this by wearing a mask, washing our hands often, staying home when sick, and keeping six feet of social distance.&nbsp; Additionally, Nebraskans should avoid the “Three Cs”.&nbsp; Avoid&nbsp;crowded places&nbsp;where you can’t practice social distancing.&nbsp; Avoid&nbsp;close contacts&nbsp;where you’re within six feet of someone for 15 consecutive minutes.&nbsp; And avoid&nbsp;confined spaces&nbsp;with poor ventilation.&nbsp; By using these tools, we can help protect our hospitals.

Last week, I also issued a new Directed Health Measure (DHM) effective statewide as of Monday, November 16th. &nbsp;It postpones elective surgeries that can wait four weeks or longer without substantially changing a patient’s outcome.&nbsp; In addition to the restriction on elective surgeries, the new DHM includes all of the health measures that took effect on November 11, 2020.&nbsp; These include requiring masks in establishments where patrons and customers are within six feet for 15 consecutive minutes, requiring six feet of separation between groups in public spaces, and limiting attendance at extracurricular activities to household members of participants.

As Thanksgiving approaches, Nebraskans are making plans for the holidays.&nbsp; I urge all Nebraskans to limit the size of their holiday gatherings to help slow the spread of coronavirus.&nbsp; Our local public health departments tell us the virus is spreading at informal gatherings, usually in people’s homes.&nbsp; As you think about celebrating the holidays, please keep in mind the possibility of Nebraska moving to the “red” zone.&nbsp; If we enter the “red” phase of our coronavirus plan, indoor gatherings will be restricted to 10 people or less.&nbsp;

Regardless of the color of phase we’re in, schools will continue to operate.&nbsp; They’ve been doing an excellent job of helping everyone stay healthy.&nbsp; The risk of the coronavirus to children is extremely low, but the harm of school closures to students and families is enormous.&nbsp; Academically, remote learning simply doesn’t work well for some students.&nbsp; Without in-person classes, children miss out on valuable opportunities to build social skills.&nbsp; They also lose the benefits of a structured environment that promotes healthy nutrition, physical and mental health. &nbsp;

The impact of the pandemic extends beyond the virus itself.&nbsp; CDC Director Robert Redfield has highlighted the rising number of deaths from suicides and overdoses among high school-aged kids. &nbsp;For this age group, increased deaths from suicide and drug abuse in 2020—compared to a typical year—have been much higher than deaths from coronavirus. &nbsp;Tragically, we’ve seen evidence of this in Nebraska. &nbsp;According to work done by the Kim Foundation, suicides among youth under 20 years of age are double what they were last year in Douglas and Sarpy counties.&nbsp; And they’re ten times higher than deaths from the coronavirus.&nbsp; In light of these alarming statistics, it’s critical that we watch out for the well-being of our children in the coming weeks and months.

Gov. Ricketts: Support our healthcare workers

On Nov. 17 at approximately 11:45 a.m. the Chadron Police Department and the Dawes County Attorney/Coroner were contacted to investigate the unattended death of 69-year-old Chadron resident, James Meints.

Meints was found to be unresponsive in his home by family members.

"After an investigation of the scene, witness interviews, a review of medical reports and consultation with medical personnel, it was determined that Mr. Meints died of natural causes," said Vance Haug, Dawes County Attorney/Coroner.

Holiday food baskets have been provided for several years to families in our area. Sign-ups this year are online for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets at <a href="http://www.uwwn.org/foodbaskets">www.uwwn.org/foodbaskets</a>&nbsp;

or by calling United Way at 763-8031. The food baskets are intended for Box Butte County residents that are experiencing hunger.

For many years churches collected items, put them into boxes, and delivered them throughout the county. Then the Christmas food basket program was coordinated by Gene and Mickey Aruffo through Just Neighbors. After Gene’s death in April 2017, St. Matthews Episcopal Church managed the program for one year under the guidance of Father Coke McClure.&nbsp;

The Task Force on Poverty realized there needed to be more consistency in operating the program, so United Way of Western Nebraska serving Box Butte County offered to bring the program under their umbrella to ensure the program continued well into the future. In 2018, McClure, Pastor Tim Stadem (St. John’s Lutheran Church) and Karen Benzel (United Way) met with Mickey Aruffo to officially transfer the program and to learn more about the process Just Neighbors used for the program. United Way began coordinating the Holiday Food Basket program in 2018.

Safeway collects Turkey buck donations in Autumn leading up to Thanksgiving. All the donations Safeway receives are used to purchase Thanksgiving meals that are given to United Way to distribute to food insecure families in our community. In 2018, United Way volunteers distributed 59 Thanksgiving food baskets, and 89 were distributed in 2019 serving 295 people. The number of food baskets available directly correlates to the donations Safeway receives for the Turkey Bucks program. Safeway notifies United Way when the turkeys and sides are available, and those who have signed up to receive a basket are notified of the time and location for pickup. Families who do not have transportation are encouraged to use public transit, which is free at this time.

The Christmas food baskets are a community effort coordinated by United Way. Safeway begins collecting Santa Bucks, monetary donations at the registers that are used to purchase food that is then given to United Way to distribute, after Thanksgiving. In the past, area churches and organizations would confirm the number of families they were able to serve and names of the families were given to each entity. This year, the Christmas food basket program is a true community effort with all the baskets including similar food items and distributed from one location. Food items are currently being collected and will be taken to one central location to be distributed via drive thru.&nbsp;

There will be an opportunity to purchase small gifts for the children whose families are receiving Christmas food baskets to be included in the distribution. More details will be announced after Thanksgiving. Families should expect to receive a ham, potatoes, canned fruits and vegetables, stuffing, gravy, bread or rolls, and other items in their Christmas boxes. The food boxes are not prepared meals.

Only those families that have completed the online application to sign-up will be eligible to receive a Christmas food basket. In 2018, 225 baskets were distributed serving 846 people. In 2019, 930 people were served for a total of 282 baskets.

If someone would like to donate to the food basket program, they are welcome to do so through their church, or via the Turkey Bucks or Santa Bucks programs at Safeway.&nbsp;&nbsp;Donations may be mailed to United Way&nbsp;P.O. SCOTTSBLUFF ― Due to increased COVID-19 cases in the region and as an increased safety precaution for Regional West patients and staff, effective Wednesday, Nov. 18, West Nebraska Blood Center will relocate to a conference room in Scottsbluff’s Hampton Inn and Suites, located at Highway 26 and Avenue B. 

West Nebraska Blood Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are preferred. For the current week’s blood drive schedule or to make an appointment, call 308-630-2477.

LINCOLN– The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will release rooster pheasants on 16 wildlife management areas prior to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The 16 areas are: Powder Creek, (Dixon County), Oak Valley (Madison County), Wilkinson (Platte County), George Syas (Nance County), Sherman Reservoir (Sherman County), Pressey (Custer County), Cornhusker (Hall County), Kirkpatrick Basin North (York County), Peru Bottoms (Nemaha County), Randall W. Game and Parks to release pheasants on 16 wildlife management areas 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Eleven more Nebraska prison employees have tested positive for the coronavirus this week. 

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said Monday that another eight prison staffers had tested positive for COVID-19. 

That followed a similar announcement Sunday that three other prison staff members had tested positive for the virus. 

All of the ill staff members are isolating themselves at home, and anyone who had close contact with them will be notified. 

The department said a total of 263 corrections employees have now tested positive for the virus. Of those, 196 have recovered.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific railroad is planning to give roughly 31,000 of its employees a $1,000 bonus next month. 

The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad said Tuesday that the bonuses will cost the company about $37 million. 

Railroad officials said all employees who worked at least 30 days during the pandemic will receive the bonuses for helping keep the railroad moving during the virus outbreak. 

Union Pacific is continuing to see freight traffic rebound from the worst of the virus-related shutdowns during the spring.

 The railroad said shipping volume is up about 3% so far in the fourth quarter.

Dear Dawes County and surrounding area,&nbsp;

We Midwesterners are strong independent people. We are used to relying and providing for ourselves and would do anything for our neighbors. In difficult times, we are known for pulling together as a community, we can handle any situation and don’t like to be told what to do. These traits are a legacy we are proud of, but something has come along that is out of our control. As COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to rise in our community, we have growing concerns as to what the future may bring unless our community works together in acting very soon.

The impacts of this pandemic can put both our families, patients and our healthcare workers at risk.&nbsp;<a>Chadron Community Hospital and Health Services&nbsp;</a>is here to take care of our communities.

Our hospital staff is currently working very hard with the COVID-19 surge that is upon us and everyone at our facility is greatly concerned for the well-being of the local population. We have a loyal and dedicated team of men and women working here and as can be imagined, are being strong both mentally and physically in providing the care needed. Working in full personal protective equipment is not easy and can be extremely draining for our health care workers; however, it is necessary to protect their own health so that they can continue to care for our patients.

We, as with all hospitals across the state, have limited supplies and a limited amount of space.&nbsp;If the virus numbers don’t slow down, we’ll be faced with extremely difficult decisions.&nbsp; This makes me very concerned as to availability of resources to serve patients, whether they have contracted COVID-19 or not.

So, what can be done to improve this situation? It’s actually very simple.

Wear a mask, wash your hands frequently, maintain six feet of social distance and avoid the 3 Cs (crowded places, close contacts and confined spaces). These preventative measures are important and can significantly curb the spread.

Remember we would do anything for our neighbors and when difficult times happen, we are known for pulling together as a community. Now is the time to do your part to protect yourself and your neighbors.

With the holidays fast approaching, it’s even more important to do your part. By taking preventative actions now, we can protect our family and friends from this potentially deadly virus.

CCH&HS CEO Nathan Hough: 'Work together and help us control COVID-19'

CHADRON – In a typical year, about 175 regional high school students convene on campus for the annual Health Professions Showcase. However, earlier this fall, it became clear the 2020 Chadron State College&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/sci/healthprofessions/opportunities/hpday.csc" target="_blank">Showcase</a>&nbsp;would need to transition from in-person to online in order to abide by COVID-19 safety regulations.

Director of the Health Professions Program Kristal Kuhnel obtained approval from the Dean of Business, Math, and Science Dr. Wendy Waugh for the change in format. Kuhnel participated in an online conference in July which prompted her to think about ways CSC’s online showcase could keep viewers engaged.

Early in September, Kuhnel met with Health Professions Club members and asked for volunteers to help create videos about the aspects of health professions important to them. Twenty-five students signed up to help launch the project. Digital Graphic Designer Daniel Binkard visited the meeting and provided recording advice. He also recorded several videos working with Kuhnel and the students.

“Daniel was just amazing. He gave them important tips and they took it from there and ran with it,” Kuhnel said. “The willingness and dedication of our students to step up, take the time and create these videos was so inspiring and energizing. They never cease to amaze me.”

As part of the initiative, Kuhnel revised the health professions website and added 28 pages of new content with assistance from IT Specialist Alva Roberts. Within three weeks, 17 videos were created and embedded on the showcase website which launched Oct. 9.

The videos also reflect input from community health professionals. Kuhnel said that during a conversation with Nathan Hough, Chief Executive Officer at Chadron Community Hospital, to discuss the possible use of their lab to create a video of a blood draw, he proposed the idea of conducting a COVID-19 swab.

“We appreciated his active participation and that a medical laboratory scientist at the hospital was glad to demonstrate that process for us,” Kuhnel said.

Some videos provide glimpses into the day-to-day activities of a pharmacist, optometrist, and dentist practicing in Chadron. Other videos include a visual chemistry experiment that created a foam called elephant toothpaste, student interviews, tips for preparing for health careers, introductions to faculty, an overview of the Rural Health Opportunities Program, and a local veterinarian removing a grub from the side of a feline.

Chadron Health Professions Showcase goes virtual

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The number of coronavirus cases in Nebraska topped 100,000 as the state reported a record 3,440 cases Monday. 

Nebraska has had 101,601 cases since the pandemic began. 

There were also eighteen new deaths reported Monday to give the state 797 deaths. 

The number of people hospitalized with the virus in the state also set a new record at 938.

 Gov. Pete Ricketts has said that if that number continues to rise and approaches 1,200 — when 25% of the hospitalized patients in the state have coronavirus — he will impose additional restrictions to limit the spread of the virus.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts is standing firm in his opposition to a statewide mask mandate despite a recent surge in coronavirus cases that threatens to overwhelm Nebraska’s hospitals. 

Ricketts urged residents to voluntarily wear a mask, saying it’s one step of many to slow the pandemic. 

The Republican governor has focused heavily on getting voluntary compliance from residents, with campaigns urging people to avoid crowds, wash their hands frequently and stay home if they feel sick or show symptoms of the virus. 

Ricketts has also refused to let local public health districts impose their own restrictions within their areas because the virus is spreading statewide.

Ricketts still opposes mask mandate as virus cases rise

A woman and a child were transported to a Panhandle hospital after a rollover accident.&nbsp;

On Nov. 15 at approximately 4:14 p.m. the Scottsbluff Police Department was dispatched to a rollover accident at the intersection of Highway 26 and East Overland Drive in Scottsbluff.&nbsp;

 &nbsp;A 2014 Dodge Durango driven by 35-year-old Carl Sell of Bayard was traveling south on Highway 26 approaching the East Overland Drive intersection. &nbsp;A black 2006 F-150 driven by 26-year-old Kayellyn Haug of Gering was traveling west toward East Overland Drive at the Highway 26 intersection.&nbsp;

Sell drove through the red light colliding with Haug’s vehicle causing it to roll on its top in the east bound lane of East Overland Drive.&nbsp;

 Haug’s 1-year-old child was also in the vehicle, restrained in the back seat.

"Haug was not wearing her seat belt and received non-life threatening injuries," said Dominick Peterson, Scottsbluff Police Patrol Sergeant. "Sell was wearing his seat belt and received minor injuries."&nbsp; 

Haug and her child were transported by ambulance to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Haug's child&nbsp;sustained no injuries in the accident.&nbsp;

Sell was cited for a traffic signal violation, texting while driving and careless driving.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Woman, child transported to hospital after Panhandle rollover accident

COVID-19 cases continue to rise throughout the panhandle. Box Butte General Hospital CEO Lori Mazanec sent a letter to residents urging them to do their part to help protect their community.&nbsp;

Dear Box Butte County and surrounding area,

As COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to rise in our community, I am deeply troubled as to what the future may bring unless we act very soon.

Box Butte General Hospital is vital to this community; however, the impacts of this pandemic are putting both our healthcare workers and our patients at risk.

Our hospital staff is currently being stretched and pushed to the limit; the COVID-19 surge is upon us and everyone at our facility is greatly concerned. We have a loyal and dedicated team of men and women working here, but for a variety of reasons, they are getting taxed, both mentally and physically. Working in full personal protective equipment is not easy and can be extremely draining for our health care workers; however, it is necessary to protect their own health so that they can continue to care for our patients.

I’m also very concerned about our availability to manage patients, whether they have contracted COVID-19 or not. We have a limited supply of beds and resources and if the numbers don’t slow down, we’ll be faced with extremely difficult decisions in terms of who gets needed care and who may have to wait.

So, what’s next? It’s actually very simple.

With the holidays fast approaching, it’s even more important to do your part. By taking preventative actions now, we can protect our family and friends from this deadly virus.

I implore you as a resident of this community to help us put an end to COVID-19 in Nebraska.

BBGH CEO Lori Mazanec sends urgent letter to Alliance community

A 14-year-old North Platte boy remains hospitalized in Lincoln after a medical episode in the shower caused him to sustain serious burns to his body.

Conner Dockery was preparing for school on the morning of October 19 when he had a seizure-like episode in the shower.

When Conner fell, he accidentally turned the shower handle to the hottest possible setting. Unable to call for help, Conner lay in the scalding water until his mother Shannon Sauer came to check on him.

Shannon was able to get Conner out of the shower and call 911.

Conner has sustained 3rd-degree burns to his chest, stomach, arms, both of his sides, and seventy percent of his back.&nbsp;

Due to the severity of his injuries, Conner was transported from Great Plains Health to Saint Elizabeth Burn Center in Lincoln.

Upon arrival, doctors determined that twenty-six percent of Conner's skin had been burned.

At this point, Conner has undergone three surgeries and is preparing to undergo a fourth one today.&nbsp;

In addition to being burned, Shannon and doctors were concerned about what had caused Conner to fall in the first place.

Further testing found that Conner's kidneys aren't functioning properly and he was diagnosed with Hydronephrosis and Renal Artery Stenosis in both kidneys. Doctors also found abnormalities in an EEG.

These conditions will also require further testing and treatment.

As Conner continues to heal, Shannon and other family members have had to miss work and have traveled extensively.

North Platte boy burned in shower continues to heal, prepares for 4th surgery

LINCOLN&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol joins law enforcement agencies throughout the United States in an effort to keep travelers safe leading up to and during the Thanksgiving holiday. The “Click It or Ticket” event begins today and runs through Thanksgiving weekend.

“Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the busiest travel seasons of the year,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “While your travel plans may be different this Thanksgiving, using your seat belt for every trip, even just across town, remains important.”

“Click It or Ticket” is a national effort for law enforcement agencies, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In Nebraska, dozens of local law enforcement agencies join NSP in the effort, which is made possible thanks, in part, to grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office (NDOT-HSO). NSP’s portion of NDOT-HSO grant funding is $25,000.

In 2019, 63 percent of people who lost their lives in passenger vehicle crashes in Nebraska were not wearing a seat belt. NDOT estimates that seat belt use reduces the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent for front-seat passenger car occupants and by 60 percent for light truck occupants.

“The stats are clear: seat belts save lives,” said Colonel Bolduc. “Throughout the Thanksgiving season, troopers will be on patrol to keep Nebraska roads safe. But all motorists have a role to play by following traffic safety laws, avoiding distractions, and wearing a seat belt.”

During the winter driving season, travelers are advised to stay up to date on the forecast and check road conditions in the event of inclement weather. Nebraska’s 511 system is available online, on the phone, and through the Nebraska 511 app. Any motorist can also call *55 or 800-525-5555 to reach the NSP Highway Helpline for assistance or to report a dangerous driver.

Fall River Health Services joins nationwide observance of Rural Health Day 

On Nov. 11 at approximately 9:40 p.m. the Chadron Police Department and Dawes County Attorney/Coroner were contacted to investigate the unattended death of 78-year-old Gerald Howard.&nbsp;

Howard was found unresponsive in his Chadron home by his spouse.

"After an investigation of the scene, witness interviews, a review of medical reports and consultation with medical personnel...it was determined that Mr. Howard died of natural causes," said Vance Haug, Dawes County Attorney/Coroner.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chadron man found dead 

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Bill Stocker could be considered the archetype of a conservative voter: He’s a retired Marine and former police officer who voted for President Donald Trump. But he’s also among the majority of South Dakota voters who broadly legalized marijuana this month.

Stocker, 61, said enforcing marijuana laws gets in the way of pursuing other drug crimes and called warnings about the ills of marijuana “a bunch of baloney” that even people in a Republican stronghold like South Dakota no longer believe.

South Dakota’s values of “personal responsibility and freedom” won out, said Stocker, who lives in Sioux Falls.

The 2020 election helped prove how broadly accepted marijuana has become throughout the United States, with measures to legalize recreational pot also breezing to victory in progressive New Jersey, moderate Arizona and conservative Montana. Fifteen states have now broadly legalized it, while 36 states allow medical marijuana.

Voters in Mississippi overwhelmingly approved medical marijuana this month, giving the drug another foothold in the South.

A Gallup Poll released Nov. 9 indicated that 68% of Americans favor legalizing marijuana — double the approval rate in 2003. That wide margin was evident in the election, with marijuana measures passing with strong bipartisan support.

In South Dakota and Montana — where Republicans swept to victory in the key races — recreational marijuana passed with at least 16 percentage points more support than Democratic President-elect Joe Biden received. South Dakota also approved medical pot, which outpolled Biden by 34 percentage points.

“We’ve waged a war against this plant for a century and by any reasonable metric, that war has been an abject failure,” said Matthew Schweich, deputy director of the Marijuana Policy Project, which favors legalization. “All it’s done is incarcerate millions of Americans, it has perpetuated racism in this country, and perhaps the worst injustice of all is that it’s deprived us of medical marijuana research.”

Marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, hurting veterans who can’t be prescribed medical pot at Veterans Affairs clinics, he said.

They “come home with chronic pain and we’re pushing them to opioids,” Schweich said. “That’s crazy. That’s unpatriotic and it’s a disgrace.”

Support for legalization was around 25% in 1992 when then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton tried to avoid answering questions about whether he had used marijuana before finally saying in a television interview that he had experimented with the drug, didn’t like it and “didn’t inhale.”

In early 2019, Kamala Harris — now the vice president-elect — was asked about her prior marijuana use during a radio interview and acknowledged: “I did inhale.”

Brendan Johnson, a former U.S. attorney in South Dakota who supported the state’s marijuana initiatives, said the campaign focused on the fact that in recent years 10% of arrests in the state were for marijuana, and most were small amounts.

“We have a real problem here where we have criminalized an entire generation of South Dakotans, and we’re paying a price,” Johnson said.

The owner of a chain of medical marijuana dispensaries in Billings, Montana, credited passage of the recreational marijuana initiative to a yearslong campaign by medical marijuana supporters to educate the public about the benefits of cannabis.

“There has been a considerable change in the political demographic because people are educated, because they know Aunt Margaret tried it for her cancer and she can eat,” said Richard Abromeit, owner of Montana Advanced Caregivers.

Advocates’ next goal is to get marijuana removed from a federal list of illegal drugs with no accepted medical use and high potential for abuse. The listing prevents labs from researching potential medical remedies using marijuana.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Bill Stocker could be considered the archetype of a conservative voter: He’s a retired Marine and former police officer who voted for President Donald Trump. But he’s also among the majority of South Dakota voters who broadly legalized marijuana this month.Stocker, 61, said enforcing marijuana laws gets in the way of pursuing other drug crimes and called warnings about the ills of marijuana “a bunch of baloney” that even people in a Republican stronghold like South Dakota no longer believe.South Dakota’s values of “personal responsibility and freedom” won out, said Stocker, who lives in Sioux Falls.The 2020 election helped prove how broadly accepted marijuana has become throughout the United States, with measures to legalize recreational pot also breezing to victory in progressive New Jersey, moderate Arizona and conservative Montana. Fifteen states have now broadly legalized it, while 36 states allow medical marijuana.Voters in Mississippi overwhelmingly approved medical marijuana this month, giving the drug another foothold in the South.A Gallup Poll released Nov. 9 indicated that 68% of Americans favor legalizing marijuana — double the approval rate in 2003. That wide margin was evident in the election, with marijuana measures passing with strong bipartisan support.In South Dakota and Montana — where Republicans swept to victory in the key races — recreational marijuana passed with at least 16 percentage points more support than Democratic President-elect Joe Biden received. South Dakota also approved medical pot, which outpolled Biden by 34 percentage points.“We’ve waged a war against this plant for a century and by any reasonable metric, that war has been an abject failure,” said Matthew Schweich, deputy director of the Marijuana Policy Project, which favors legalization. “All it’s done is incarcerate millions of Americans, it has perpetuated racism in this country, and perhaps the worst injustice of all is that it’s deprived us of medical marijuana research.”Marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, hurting veterans who can’t be prescribed medical pot at Veterans Affairs clinics, he said.They “come home with chronic pain and we’re pushing them to opioids,” Schweich said. “That’s crazy. That’s unpatriotic and it’s a disgrace.”Support for legalization was around 25% in 1992 when then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton tried to avoid answering questions about whether he had used marijuana before finally saying in a television interview that he had experimented with the drug, didn’t like it and “didn’t inhale.”In early 2019, Kamala Harris — now the vice president-elect — was asked about her prior marijuana use during a radio interview and acknowledged: “I did inhale.”Brendan Johnson, a former U.S. attorney in South Dakota who supported the state’s marijuana initiatives, said the campaign focused on the fact that in recent years 10% of arrests in the state were for marijuana, and most were small amounts.“We have a real problem here where we have criminalized an entire generation of South Dakotans, and we’re paying a price,” Johnson said.The owner of a chain of medical marijuana dispensaries in Billings, Montana, credited passage of the recreational marijuana initiative to a yearslong campaign by medical marijuana supporters to educate the public about the benefits of cannabis.“There has been a considerable change in the political demographic because people are educated, because they know Aunt Margaret tried it for her cancer and she can eat,” said Richard Abromeit, owner of Montana Advanced Caregivers.Advocates’ next goal is to get marijuana removed from a federal list of illegal drugs with no accepted medical use and high potential for abuse. She said her feelings evolved after a CBD pill, made from hemp and prescribed by a veterinarian, eased her dog’s anxiety and arthritis.“I’m so old school,” she said. “I personally don’t have a desire for it, but (I’m) seeing the benefits for my dog.”
