The Nebraska Credit Union League (League) is pleased to announce the selection of L. James Wright as its next Chief Advocacy Officer effective September 1, 2025. The League is the state trade association and primary advocacy organization for Nebraska’s not-for-profit, member-owned credit unions.

“James Wright’s extensive experience in local, state, and federal government, as well as his understanding of the issues impacting Nebraska’s credit unions make him the perfect fit for our organization,” said Brandon

Luetkenhaus, President/CEO of the League. “James is a well-respected leader that has demonstrated an ability to bring people together to get the hard things done and I couldn’t be more excited to have him on our team,” said Luetkenhaus.

James has over two decades of experience in government policy and constituent services having served under three U.S. Congressmen, a U.S. Senator, a Governor, and two Omaha Mayors. Currently, he serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District Congressman Don Bacon. His responsibilities included overseeing the staff and all activities of the district offices, developing and advising the Congressman on policy objectives, and interfacing with officials from both the public and private sectors.

Prior to his service with Congressman Bacon, James served as Sr. Constituent Service Representative to Congressman Brad Ashford, the Director of Outreach for Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert, the Constituent Service Representative &amp; Special Projects Coordinator for U.S. Senator Mike Johanns, appointed by Governor Dave Heineman as Director of the Nebraska Office of Violence Prevention, Outreach Coordinator for Congressman Lee Terry and as a research assistant for Mayor Hal Daub.

Outside of his work in government, James is involved with several community organizations including the Nebraska Arts Council of which he is a board member, Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries, and the Omaha Community Playhouse. He is a native Nebraskan and resides in Omaha with his wife, Angie, and their son.

The Nebraska SNAP-Ed program, administered by Nebraska Extension since 1992, will cease operations effective Sept. 30. Federal funding for the program was eliminated earlier this month.

As part of the termination in funding, 10 staff positions, as well as several graduate and student worker positions supported by SNAP-ed funding will be eliminated, effective Sept. 30.&nbsp;Nebraska Extension receives approximately $2 million in funding annually for SNAP-Ed programming and educational programming for youth, adults with developmental disabilities and others who qualify for SNAP benefits. The goal of these programs is to help SNAP-eligible Nebraskans adopt healthy habits, stretch their benefits, and combat obesity.

In 2024, SNAP-Ed in Nebraska reached nearly 120,000 individuals through educational programming. Nebraskans who interacted with faculty and staff providing SNAP-Ed programming used SNAP benefits more efficiently and ate more nutritiously than those who didn’t. They also had better health outcomes. For example:

Nebraska Extension will continue other statewide food, nutrition and health programming, which reaches Nebraskans through school-based nutrition education, food safety training for foodservice workers and more.

On the last Saturday of June, our campus at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture felt more alive than ever. Aggies came home from near and far for Aggie Alumni Day, filling every corner of Curtis with laughter, hugs, and memories that seemed to pick up right where they left off. It reminded us, once again, that NCTA is so much more than a college. It’s a community, a place where connections begin, and where they keep growing, year after year.

We watched old friends embrace, swapping stories of late nights in the dorms, weekend ski trips, and the pizza shops that once lined main street. Some alumni hadn’t walked these halls in over twenty years, and the pride in their faces as they saw how their college has grown was inspiring. Their bright smiles captured exactly why NCTA matters: this is where careers in agriculture and animal care take root, and where lifelong friendships and values are built.

The day was filled with moments that made us proud. Alums gathered for a board meeting and joined us for a heartfelt lunch program, where scholarships were presented to current students, Mason Semler and Tristan Martin. That afternoon, alumni participated in a golf tournament fundraiser, a silent auction, and opportunities to tour the campus. From the Livestock Teaching Center and Veterinary Technology building to the mechanics shops and residence halls, every stop sparked stories only Aggies could tell.

When the evening banquet arrived, we celebrated Aggies who have made a lasting difference. Awards were presented to Blaine Wilson (Alumni Achievement), Barbara Weitz (Alumni Service), Dr. Larry Gossen (Honorary Life Membership), Dave Smith (Distinguished/Legacy), and Nathaly Dragoo (Leave Your Mark). It was a powerful reminder that what starts here doesn’t stay here. It spreads out into communities across the nation. Following awards, updates from Dr. Kelly Bruns, NCTA Interim Executive Director, and Kristen Houska, Director of Development for the University of Nebraska, highlighted how NCTA’s future continues to grow with purpose and heart.

In the end, what stood out the most was simple: our alumni mean everything to us. They are far more than graduates. They are our champions, our storytellers, our recruiters, and the reason NCTA thrives. Their support lights the way for the next generation of Aggies; without them, this college would not be what it is today.

To every Aggie who joined us, thank you. You showed us that in a world looking for doers, builders, and problem-solvers, what begins here doesn’t stay here. It grows.

The record-high calf prices experienced in 2024 and 2025 have left many cow-calf producers with a welcome challenge: determining how to reinvest profits in their operations. While strong cattle markets offer an opportunity to improve long-term profitability, they also bring the temptation to spend pre-tax earnings on items that may not enhance operational efficiency or performance in future years.

This cattle cycle is unique in many respects. Contributing factors include sustained drought in key production regions, historically high calf and cull cow prices, an aging producer base, and a severely reduced national cowherd inventory. As history reminds us, such as the sharp drop in feeder calf prices in 2016, periods of high income require careful, strategic decision-making to ensure long-term business success.

One common driver of decision-making during profitable years is tax planning. Many producers consult with accountants to reduce taxable income before the end of the year. While this strategy can be valid, decisions based solely on minimizing tax liability may not support the long-term financial health of the ranch. For example, purchasing a new pickup or piece of equipment before year-end may reduce tax exposure, but these investments should be evaluated on whether they contribute meaningfully to the business’s efficiency or profitability.

To evaluate potential investments more effectively, it’s important to distinguish between tax accounting and economic (business) profitability. Tax accounting focuses on cash income and deductible expenses, often using accelerated depreciation and excluding unpaid labor or owned asset costs. In contrast, an economic profit statement includes the fair market value of owned inputs such as raised feed, land use, and unpaid family labor. It also accounts for depreciation or replacement cost of breeding animals and applies an opportunity cost to owned assets—recognizing that capital tied up in equipment or land could otherwise be earning a return through low-risk investments.

From an economic perspective, investments in capital assets like pickups or tractors should be evaluated by their ability to increase gross margin (revenue minus direct costs) relative to the overhead they add. A new pickup may not improve revenue or reduce direct costs, but it does increase fixed costs through depreciation and maintenance. On the other hand, investments like cross-fencing, improved water infrastructure, or rotational grazing systems can improve forage utilization, enabling greater production without increasing land base—ultimately improving gross margin.

Another valuable use of pre-tax earnings is to improve the ranch’s current asset position—liquid assets that can be easily converted to cash. This could include backgrounding calves, purchasing stockers for grazing, or simply retaining cash in savings or a low-risk investment account. On Thursday, July 24, World War II veteran Jacob Baluska will be presented with a recognition medal at the Kimball VFW Post.

The ceremony is part of an initiative launched earlier this year by Governor Pillen and the Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs to honor Nebraska’s living World War II veterans.

Through this initiative, Pillen and the Nebraska Department of Veteran's Affairs celebrated 80 years of victory back in May of this year. At that event, living World War II veterans were recognized in the Nebraska State Capitol Rotunda. Baluska is set to be recognized with this medal under this same initiative.

According to the Nebraska Department of Veteran's Affairs website, this recognition is reserved for living veterans who meet specific conditions. The conditions specify that the recipient "must have served in the U.S. Armed Forces between Dec. 1, 1941, to December 31, 1946." Also, the recipient, "must be a current legal resident of Nebraska or demonstrate Nebraska residency at time of entering service," and "must have discharged under conditions other than dishonorable."

Local contractors have an opportunity to participate in free lead abatement training courses, part of a community-wide effort to eliminate lead hazards in homes and protect families from the harmful effects of lead poisoning. Children, especially those under the age of 6, that are exposed to lead by breathing or swallowing lead or lead dust can develop brain and nervous system damage, learning and behavioral problems, slowed growth and development and hearing and speech losses.

Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD), with funding from Housing and Urban Development (HUD), are offering lead abatement trainings which provide essential skills and certifications for contractors, renovators, and other tradespeople involved in housing rehabilitation, remodeling, and maintenance.

Participants will learn how to safely handle lead-based paint, comply with federal and local regulations, and contribute to healthier living environments – especially fore children and vulnerable populations.

“Contractors are on the front lines of protecting our communities,” said Melissa Haas, HUD Program Manager at PPHD. “Lead exposure remains a serious issue in older housing.

By equipping contractors with the right tools and training, we’re not only improving their job readiness but also ensuring that homes are safe for the families who live in them.”

In rural areas a large numbers of homes were built before 1978, when lead-based paint was banned for residential use. Improper renovation or repair can disturb lead paint and create toxic dust that poses long-term health risks, particularly to children.

“Completing this training is more than checking a box – it’s a commitment to protecting your neighbors,” Haas added. “Safe housing starts with trained workers.”

Lead Abatement Worker Training and Lead Abatement Supervisor Training will take place from September 8-12, 2025. Lead workers will attend for three days, lead supervisors will attend for five days. The training will occur in Scottsbluff. General contractors, painters, remodelers, property maintenance crews and others working in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities are encouraged to participate.

FREE Lead Abatement Trainings for Area Contractors

A vehicle swerved through lanes and into on-coming traffic before resting on the train tracks near 21st Avenue and South Beltline after a crash at approximately 9:09 PM on July 20th in Scottsbluff.

The driver, identified as Dionisio Velasquez-Florez, 43, was found to be operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Velasquez-Florez was also found to be driving without a valid driver’s license (no operator’s license), no proof of insurance, and expired in-transit decals.&nbsp; He was arrested and transported to the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center on the listed offenses.

Immediately upon being made aware of the crash, officers requested the Communication Center contact BNSF Railway to halt train traffic in the area as they responded. Upon arrival, a vehicle was found partially on the train tracks, and in a ditch, on the northwest side of South Beltline and 21ST Avenue intersection. At that time, a train was seen approaching from the east and appeared to be attempting to slow down. Bystanders near the vehicle were directed to move to a safe distance and remove themselves from the area of the tracks while officers assessed the situation. The train ultimately stopped before reaching the crossing gates.

Officers initially believed that BNSF train crews had been notified of the incident through their dispatch due to observing the train slowing. It was later learned, after speaking with the train crew, that they had not been alerted and were forced to make an emergency stop upon seeing the vehicle on the tracks. The train engineer and conductor confirmed they were unaware of the situation prior to their emergency stop. The engineer inspected the track and noted a scrape but determined it remained safe for travel.

This situation occurred within three and a half minutes and the Gering Communication Center had contacted BNSF Railway to notify them of the situation as officers were arriving on scene.  </figure>The driver, identified as Dionisio Velasquez-Florez, 43, was found to be operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Velasquez-Florez was also found to be driving without a valid driver’s license (no operator’s license), no proof of insurance, and expired in-transit decals.&nbsp; He was arrested and transported to the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center on the listed offenses.Immediately upon being made aware of the crash, officers requested the Communication Center contact BNSF Railway to halt train traffic in the area as they responded. Upon arrival, a vehicle was found partially on the train tracks, and in a ditch, on the northwest side of South Beltline and 21ST Avenue intersection. At that time, a train was seen approaching from the east and appeared to be attempting to slow down. Bystanders near the vehicle were directed to move to a safe distance and remove themselves from the area of the tracks while officers assessed the situation. The train ultimately stopped before reaching the crossing gates.Officers initially believed that BNSF train crews had been notified of the incident through their dispatch due to observing the train slowing. It was later learned, after speaking with the train crew, that they had not been alerted and were forced to make an emergency stop upon seeing the vehicle on the tracks. The train engineer and conductor confirmed they were unaware of the situation prior to their emergency stop. The engineer inspected the track and noted a scrape but determined it remained safe for travel.This situation occurred within three and a half minutes and the Gering Communication Center had contacted BNSF Railway to notify them of the situation as officers were arriving on scene. The June 29th and 30th severe thunderstorms brought exceptionally high winds and heavy rain, which caused significant damage to public property and infrastructure, including millions of dollars of damage to NPPD infrastructure.

Governor Pillen has directed the Nebraska Adjutant General,&nbsp; Major General Craig W. Strong – who also serves as State Disaster Coordinator – to activate appropriate State emergency plans.&nbsp;

The emergency disaster declaration will free up state funds and resources to assist the area as they work to address damage and other issues.

The State of Nebraska is likely to seek a Presidential Disaster Declaration to aid recovery from these storms.

Any proposed merger between two larger carriers must demonstrate enhanced competition and a clear public benefit.

But critics, including shipping customers and industry groups, worry that fewer rail options could drive up costs and reduce service quality.

CHADRON – Author Gerry Robinson will present the Pilster Lecture for the Sept. 18 Sandoz Society gathering at Chadron State College. Robinson is the author of The Cheyenne Story: An Interpretation of Courage. His talk will address recent revelations and developments along the trail traveled by his Northern Cheyenne ancestors in 1878-79. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom and is free and open to the public. Additionally, Robinson will meet with interested students on Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. in Old Admin Room 230.

Robinson is a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe and was born and raised on the reservation in Lame Deer, Montana. His writing draws from vivid memories of reservation life, where his family of 10 lived.

His early years were shaped by poverty, resourcefulness, and the strength of his parents, who worked hard to improve their children's lives, according to his online bio. Their house did not have running water and only had intermittent electricity. Over time, the family transitioned to a home with modern amenities and eventually settled on a ranch near Ashland, Montana, where Robinson’s teenage years were marked by hard work and emotional complexity. Though Robinson didn’t begin writing seriously until 25 years later, the land and people of his upbringing remain central to his stories.

The novel is the first volume in a three-part series that highlights the Northern Cheyenne and their pivotal role in the history of the Plains Indian Wars. While figures like Custer and Crazy Horse often dominate the narrative, Robinson centers his story on Little Wolf, a Sweet Medicine Chief of the Cheyenne, and Bill Rowland, a white man who married into the tribe and served as an interpreter.

Set in the months following the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the story unfolds as Little Wolf urges his people to move to safety at the Red Cloud Agency, fearing the destructive force of the U.S. military. But pride and internal conflict derailed his efforts. Meanwhile, Rowland finds himself caught between two worlds when the army turns its attention toward attacking a Cheyenne winter camp, home to his own family and friends.

In addition to his forthcoming book, Robinson has published articles, poems, and short stories that reflect the spirit, struggle, and resilience of his community and culture.

Deadline Approaches for Box Butte County’s “Big Idea” Grant Competition

The resources and support available through Project Strive make a big difference in helping first-generation and low-income students find academic success and achieve their goals, according to two current Chadron State College participants in the federally funded program.

“The summer before I started, and my first semester were full of doubt and a lot of worry,” said Samantha Hill, a Gillette, Wyoming, native who will start her junior year at CSC in August. “Project Strive has allowed me to feel supported and important. I have met new people and found so much support from the staff.”

The ways Project Strive can connect students with support systems stand out to Sebastian Garcia, a sophomore from Rapid City, South Dakota.

“(For people) with disabilities and especially those with lower income or first-generation who just need to get their foot in the door, Project Strive is a good opportunity,” Garcia said. “It definitely is a good thing to help people get a head start, learn about college, and get connected.”

Project Strive is the name Chadron State uses for one of the eight federal TRiO programs, created in 1965, to support individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds in attaining post-secondary education. CSC has been part of the Department of Education programs, which include Upward Bound and Student Support Services, since 1967. Chadron State’s participation has repeatedly been reauthorized, but the programs face potential funding cuts.

Both Hill and Garcia qualified for Project Strive as first-generation college students. Other eligible criteria for enrollment in Project Strive include a low-income background or disabilities. Students accepted into the program receive a variety of services including special counseling, targeted workshops, physical resources, and the possibility for some financial assistance.

Garcia learned of Project Strive as a senior in high school while planning college visits and exploring CSC’s website. Attracted by the affordability of a rangeland management degree at Chadron State, he decided to enroll.&nbsp;

“I knew that the degree was going to be a quality education for a really good price,” he said.

Taking advantage of his first-generation status, Garcia joined the program and immediately saw some benefits.

“Resource-wise, I was very blessed by Project Strive,” he said.

Project Strive also provides workshops on a variety of topics important for students unfamiliar with the college environment, including scholarships, grants, loans, and budgeting. “

I think those are really important things, especially for those who qualify for Project Strive,” Garcia said. “The workshops were my favorite part. They helped me a lot.”

As a student ambassador for Chadron State, Garcia always lets prospective students know of the opportunities Project Strive offers.

“Every tour I have, I am able to bring up Project Strive,” he said. “We are definitely at a time when a lot of parents are sending their students to school and wanting that extra resource.”

For Hill, the counseling services provided by Project Strive have been particularly beneficial.&nbsp;

“Being a first-generation student is very difficult to navigate,” she said. “I have found personal success and growth through my time in counseling, something that never would have happened if I had not gone to my first counseling session&nbsp;through Project Strive.”

She also praised the Project Strive workshops and the social events that helped her connect with other students from similar backgrounds.

“My favorites were Time Management, Build Your Own Zen Garden, and volunteering with Keep Chadron Beautiful,” she said.

Hill attributes her Project Strive experiences to her decision to pursue a double major in criminal justice and psychological studies, as well as a minor in visual arts. “

"I am confident in my abilities, something freshman Samantha would not have been able to say,” she said.

Hill’s success at CSC is reflected in the leadership positions she has taken in a number of campus organizations and her recent appointment as a student trustee on the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges.

“Now I am able to keep growing in my confidence, knowing I belong at CSC,” she said.

Reducing or eliminating Project Strive could be life-changing for potential students from a background like hers, according to Hill.

“[Project Strive] allows support for students who have felt like me, worried and doubtful of beginning college. The program provides a safe place for students to learn, make friends and express the concerns they have about college,” she said. “I hope that future generations are able to apply for Project Strive services and gain confidence in knowing that regardless of your background, you belong.”

Attracted by the affordability of a rangeland management degree at Chadron State, he decided to enroll.&nbsp;“I knew that the degree was going to be a quality education for a really good price,” he said.<figure>

 </figure>Taking advantage of his first-generation status, Garcia joined the program and immediately saw some benefits.“Resource-wise, I was very blessed by Project Strive,” he said.Project Strive also provides workshops on a variety of topics important for students unfamiliar with the college environment, including scholarships, grants, loans, and budgeting. “I think those are really important things, especially for those who qualify for Project Strive,” Garcia said. “The workshops were my favorite part. They helped me a lot.”As a student ambassador for Chadron State, Garcia always lets prospective students know of the opportunities Project Strive offers.“Every tour I have, I am able to bring up Project Strive,” he said. “We are definitely at a time when a lot of parents are sending their students to school and wanting that extra resource.”For Hill, the counseling services provided by Project Strive have been particularly beneficial.&nbsp;“Being a first-generation student is very difficult to navigate,” she said. “I have found personal success and growth through my time in counseling, something that never would have happened if I had not gone to my first counseling session&nbsp;through Project Strive.”She also praised the Project Strive workshops and the social events that helped her connect with other students from similar backgrounds.“My favorites were Time Management, Build Your Own Zen Garden, and volunteering with Keep Chadron Beautiful,” she said.Hill attributes her Project Strive experiences to her decision to pursue a double major in criminal justice and psychological studies, as well as a minor in visual arts. “"I am confident in my abilities, something freshman Samantha would not have been able to say,” she said.Hill’s success at CSC is reflected in the leadership positions she has taken in a number of campus organizations and her recent appointment as a student trustee on the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges.“Now I am able to keep growing in my confidence, knowing I belong at CSC,” she said.Reducing or eliminating Project Strive could be life-changing for potential students from a background like hers, according to Hill.“[Project Strive] allows support for students who have felt like me, worried and doubtful of beginning college. The program provides a safe place for students to learn, make friends and express the concerns they have about college,” she said. “I hope that future generations are able to apply for Project Strive services and gain confidence in knowing that regardless of your background, you belong.”
