The University of Nebraska Medical Center has announced its fall 2024 dean’s list for students enrolled in nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and the allied health professions of medical imaging and therapeutic sciences program and medical laboratory science.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To qualify for the dean’s list, nursing and the allied health students must be enrolled for 12 or more hours during the semester and have a grade point average of 3.75 or above. To qualify for the pharmacy dean’s list, students must place in the top 20% of their class and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Dental students must be in the top 10% of their class for the semester.&nbsp;

The following is a list of students, their hometowns and the colleges in which they are enrolled.&nbsp;The names of students who chose not to be listed due to privacy reasons — protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act — are not included.&nbsp;&nbsp;

President’s Day Closures of City of Alliance Facilities

Alliance, Ne – According to the Alliance Police Department, officers
were dispatched around 3am on Saturday morning to Box Butte General Hospital in
Alliance for a report of a male who had been assaulted. Officers arrived and observed
the victim to have sustained possible life-threatening injuries. The initial
investigation revealed that the suspect drove the victim to the hospital after
the assault. Witnesses stated that the suspect punched the victim repeatedly
after a verbal argument escalated.

The victim fell to the ground, striking his head on the
pavement. The suspect continued to strike the victim several times until a
witness intervened. The suspect then drove the victim to the hospital and did
not disclose that he had caused the injuries to the victim. The suspect was identified
as Dreyson McCormick of Alliance. Following interview with all witnesses,
McCormick was located and taken into custody without incident. The victim
remains in critical condition.

McCormick is currently being held in the Box Butte County
Jail where he is facing a charge of First-Degree Assault.

witness intervened. The suspect then drove the victim to the hospital and did

as Dreyson McCormick of Alliance. Following interview with all witnesses,
McCormick was located and taken into custody without incident. The victim
remains in critical condition.<figure>

Flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly. People who have flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms:

 fever or feeling feverish/chills (not everyone with flu will have a fever)

 some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

“PPHD’s school, hospital, and wastewater surveillance is showing high rates of Influenza A around the area,” said Jessica Davies, Panhandle Public Health District Director.

Davies added, “If you test positive for Influenza A, it is important to remain at home until you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications, and your symptoms have been improving for 24 hours.”

Most people who get flu will recover in a few days to less than two weeks, but some people will develop complications (such as pneumonia) as a result of flu, some of which can be life- threatening and result in death.

Antiviral drugs like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) should be used as early as possible in people who have flu-like illness. For those who aren’t sick, preventive measures along with flu vaccines can help prevent flu and other winter illnesses.

In Nebraska, there have been a total of 34 flu-related deaths so far this season. Influenza A is the most prevalent strain of flu this season, with a total of 10,658 cases reported statewide so far.

 Avoiding contact with people who are sick

 Covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing

 Practice health habits such as rest, drinking fluids, and staying physically active

Lincoln, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to over 200 weather-related incidents during the most recent snowstorm.

As the snow fell across Nebraska, troopers remained busy across the entire state. Troopers investigated 34 crashes, performed 161 motorist assists, and helped other agencies with 18 responses from the evening hours of Tuesday through the Thursday morning commute.

After a bitterly cold start to Thursday, frigid temps are in the forecast for most of next week. NSP advises all motorists to be prepared during winter driving conditions and extreme cold.

“Exposure in extremely cold temperatures can be dangerous after only a short amount of time,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Everyone on the road should have a plan in case they become stranded. Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle and have a full tank of gas before you hit the road.”

CHADRON - The Theatre Department at Chadron State College will perform Ruthless! The Musical from Feb. 27 to March 1 at 7 p.m. and March 2 at 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Black Box Theatre.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ruthless! The Musical follows ambitious, spotlight-seeking characters on their journeys of becoming stars, according to director of the play and Theatre adjunct faculty member David Craven. All of the characters are focused on themselves and their own successes, which encourages a competitive nature. Craven said the musical will be full of dark comedy, catchy tunes, and outrageous characters. The performance will poke fun at the genre of musical dramedy and is recommended for older children and adults with a film rating of PG.

“I am approaching this as a satirical musical dramedy. It could be played as a farce or a melodrama, but I want the actors to create real characters that have depth, and yet play into the ridiculous circumstances they find themselves in. This is proving to be a fun challenge for each actor, and they get to shine. Almost all of the technical crew are in the show. Chloe Shatswell of Rapid City, South Dakota, is learning to balance the roles of assistant stage manager and cast member.

“Although I have experience within stage management, I don’t have a lot of experience as an actor which is an exciting new challenge. I am enjoying juggling these two hats during the rehearsal process,” Shatswell said.

Other cast members have commented on the comedic aspect of the production on the CSC Theatre Instagram page.

“This show is a hilarious comedy all about the insane world of fame. The humor is as sharp as a tack and hilarious songs to boot,” Jarret Buchholz of Arnold, Nebraska, said.

Riley Perry of Box Elder, South Dakota, believes audiences should view this production for multiple reasons.

“Ruthless! is a hilarious show filled with lots of fun, laughter, and a chaotic, in a good way, storyline,” Perry said.

Craven recognized retired professor Scott Cavin for his help with the production.

“Our commitment is a reflection of Scott Cavin, who retired last year, and is still a driving force for theatre at Chadron State College, for over 28 years. We have all worked with him and used lessons he taught us as students or peers. He is still advising us through email, and we couldn’t be more thankful,” Craven said.

North Platte will soon be opening a state-of-the-art meat packing facility, Sustainable Beef LLC, employing 800 people. The plant will be competing against the four major corporations that control 85% of the market. Nebraska ranchers and cattle feeders were paid no more than any other producers, even though they produce the highest quality beef in the world. Cattle producers began organizing the plant in 2020, modeled after Nebraska's ag coops. The business plans to process 1,500 cattle a day, with Walmart as their primary customer.

The economic impact on North Platte? It’s estimated the plant will bring more than $1.2 billion dollars to town, and support nearly 2,000 jobs due to the increase in population.

But where will these 800, or 2000, workers come from? Nebraska has a labor shortage, perhaps the worst in the nation. There are only 39 workers for every 100 jobs, according to the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce.

President Trump has pledged to crack down on immigration. He demands that undocumented workers return to their country of origin. ICE has become active in many parts of our nation. There is no consensus figure on how many undocumented immigrants live in Nebraska, but CNN says estimates range from 30,000 to 75,000.&nbsp;Most of these are employed in meat packing plants in eastern Nebraska.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 9.1% of all jobs in Nebraska were held by immigrants in 2022; one out of every eleven jobs. Most experts place that at 10% now. 8% of our state's population is foreign-born. Immigrants make up close to 9% of the working-age population in our state. The Census Bureau breaks this down according to industries. 25.3% of foreign-born workers are in manufacturing, compared to 8.4% of native-born workers. Construction, cleaning and maintenance, and health care also rely heavily on immigrant workers. 61% of meat packing workers are foreign-born.

The American Immigration Council reminds us that immigrants fill far more than entry-level jobs in Nebraska. 24% have college degrees! Immigrants are found in all occupations. Around 40% are naturalized citizens. As neighbors, business owners, taxpayers, and workers, immigrants are an integral part of Nebraska’s diverse and thriving communities and make extensive contributions that benefit all.

Because of Nebraska's reliance on immigrants in the labor force, the Nebraska Alliance for Thriving Communities has been created. Members include the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce, unions, ag industry lobbyists, business executives, small business and farm owners, nonprofits, city governments, and activists. They believe it should be easier to legally immigrate to and work in the United States. They’re pushing federal reforms to improve pathways to permanent residency, to boost acceptance of refugees, and especially to increase the number of work visas.

The Alliance stresses that they don't just want workers, they want immigrant families. Nebraska not only has a shortage of workers, we have a shortage of children. In 2022, there were 2,000 fewer Nebraska students enrolled in kindergarten than in the 12th grade, according to Nebraska Public Schools data. Our birth rates continue to drop, and many of our rural communities are struggling to keep schools and businesses open. Families also mean more stability, more income being spent in the community, more taxes being paid, and lower crime rates.

Box Butte Co. Community for Kids launches survey ahead of 4-Day School Week

Lincoln, Ne - Lawmakers gave first-round approval Feb. 11 to a bill intended to increase Medicaid provider reimbursement rates without the use of general fund dollars. Modeled on a proposal approved by lawmakers last year to levy an assessment on all Nebraska hospitals, LB527, introduced by North Platte Sen. Mike Jacobson, would use a similar mechanism to levy an assessment on the state’s health maintenance organizations.

Under the bill, the state Department of Health and Human Services would be required to submit a state plan amendment to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services by Aug. 1, 2025.

If approved, the state plan amendment would authorize collection of a 6% tax on all non-Medicare premiums written in Nebraska under an HMO certificate of authority, to be collected by the state Department of Insurance.

Revenue generated by the tax would be remitted to a newly created Medicaid Access and Quality Fund. DHHS would use the fund to leverage federal matching dollars to enhance Medicaid reimbursement rates paid to nonhospital providers of physical health services, with an emphasis on evaluation and management, labor and delivery and rural health services.

The fund also would be used to pay a monthly per-member fee of at least $75 to qualified primary care providers who meet criteria to serve as a primary care medical home for target populations. Any remaining funds would be used within the state’s Medicaid and CHIP programs.

Jacobson said the bill, when combined with federal matching funds, would generate approximately $115 million to enhance rates for providers. Those enhanced rates would help increase access to health care services, he said, noting that more than half of Nebraska counties currently are defined as maternity care deserts.

“This bill is incredibly important to the future of health care in our state, especially in rural areas and especially for pregnant women and Nebraska children,” Jacobson said.

Following adoption of a technical amendment from the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee, senators voted 39-0 to advance LB527 from general file.

Hemingford Public Schools announces Mr. Joshua Redden as new High School Principal

Alliance, NE – Reminder the Alliance Nutrition Site will once again be hosting a Valentine’s Dinner on Friday, February 14th for area seniors. By City of AllianceAlliance, NE – Reminder the Alliance Nutrition Site will once again be hosting a Valentine’s Dinner on Friday, February 14th for area seniors. Alliance Senior Center staff strongly encourages Family members and friends to join their loved ones for dinner. Due to an overwhelming response to previous events, this year staff will host dinner in two shifts. Reservations will be available for 5:00 PM and 6:15 PM on Valentines day. Hosted by Chadron Community Hospital at the Holiday Inn Express, the event provides an opportunity for members to meet, mingle, and build connections within the local business community. Attendees will also have the chance to meet the hospital’s new CEO, Jon Reiners, along with hospital staff.

The Chamber’s Business After Hours events, held quarterly by the Chamber Ambassador Committee, aim to foster professional relationships and strengthen community ties.
