Officers have surrounded the area and there is no danger to the public.

 In order to help safely de-escalate the situation, we ask that people remain out of the area from highway three eighty five east to Maple Street and from a 10th street North to 6th street.&nbsp;

If you are inside that area, remain inside your home or business except for emergencies.

As with all types of road construction; slow your speeds, follow the signing that is provided and give extra room to those who are making the repairs.

Panhandle police activity, Nov. 20 - Nov. 26 

On Nov. 28 at approximately 8:20 p.m., Scottsbluff Police were dispatched to the 2000 block of Ave F in reference to a disturbance.

  Witnesses reported observing a male with a bleeding head injury at a residence on the west side of the street.  When Scottsbluff Police arrived on scene a male was exiting the front door of 2006 Ave F and was bleeding from the top of his head.

  A suspect was named and was reported to have fled the scene in a tan colored SUV. 

 Area agencies were advised of a possible suspect vehicle along with a description of the suspect.  The involved vehicle was located at 755 M Street in Gering, NE.  The residence was secured while the investigation continued on scene in Scottsbluff. 

 The investigation led to the finding of residential security video of the incident and it was found that the male victim was assaulted with the handle of a large hunting knife during a physical altercation at 2006 Ave F.  The information led a search warrant being sought and granted to search the property of 755 ½ M Street. 

 Codie Applegate, 34 of Scottsbluff, NE., and associated evidence were located during the execution of the search warrant. 

 Applegate was arrested for the charges of 2nd Degree Assault, Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony, Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person, Terroristic Threats, Obstruction, and Child Abuse.

  Also charged in the incident was Angela Dreher, 43 of Gering, NE., for the charges of Obstruction and Child Abuse.  The victim was treated and released at Regional West Medical Center. 

 Gering Police Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Gering Fire Department, and Regional West Ambulance Services assisted in the response&nbsp;

His follow-up education to the family on Narcan's availability highlighted his care for the community beyond the call of duty.

 Officer Parker Dahlberg &amp; Officer Brandt SmithIncident Date: July 21, 2024Officers Dahlberg and Smith responded to a suspected fentanyl overdose where a female was unconscious and not breathing. Utilizing Narcan and sternum rubs, they successfully revived the individual, who began breathing and regained consciousness. Their quick response and decisive actions directly saved her life.

 ACO Toni RavertThrough vigilance and dedication, ACO Ravert identified and helped apprehend a suspect involved in trespassing and theft at Shovelhead’s Garage on October 4, 2024. Her actions went above and beyond her role and were pivotal in resolving the case.

 Officer Parker DahlbergOfficer Dahlberg is recognized for his incredible passion, proactiveness, and commitment to law enforcement, even as he is still in his first year with APD. Since May 2024, Officer Dahlberg has completed over 89 traffic stops, resulting in criminal cases involving narcotics, driving while impaired, and driving under suspension or revocation. His dedication to upholding the law has made Alliance a safer community.

 Officer Tyler SherlockOfficer Sherlock is recognized for his extraordinary efforts in digital forensics throughout 2024. Without being directed, he took it upon himself to master the GrayKey software, becoming APD’s go-to expert in extracting and analyzing data from cell phones for criminal investigations. Officer Sherlock’s work has been instrumental in solving cases not only for the APD but also for agencies across the Nebraska Panhandle. Often times individuals take care of their loved ones automatically without recognizing the physical, emotional, and financial sacrifices they have made to provide extra support to family members with a chronic illness, disability, or age-related condition,” said Tony Green, Director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities.&nbsp;“Caregivers regularly help their loved one with a broad range of daily needs to help them live in their own homes and as independently as possible. It is okay to take a break or utilize a respite service without feeling guilty. Supportive individuals need a chance to recharge and obtain emotional support, do an activity they enjoy, or be present for their other loved ones. Please&nbsp;remember that you are not alone; support and help are available.”

In Nebraska, about 179,000 individuals provide an estimated 168 million hours of care each year. This unpaid labor is valued at $2.8 billion by the latest report by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Valuing the Invaluable series. Caregivers help their loved ones manage medications and medical care, meal preparation, eating, bathing, dressing, chores, finances, grocery shopping, transportation, and much more. Even if you do not live close by your loved one, you can help provide valuable care to a loved one through assistance in setting up appointments, calling to check in, ordering supplies, and more to fit the individual’s unique needs.

Several caregivers work full or part-time jobs, which may lead to feeling overwhelmed at times because of their “double duty”. Caregivers are encouraged to take some time away from their jobs at times due to being in the role of a caregiver and meeting the immediate needs of the care recipient. Employees covered under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may be able to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave a year to care for relatives.

Nebraska Revised Statutes § 77-3163 to 77-3166 outlines the tax credits for those providing care to family members with additional needs. That tax credit will go into effect for taxable years beginning after January 1, 2025. The Caregiver Tax Credit provides a nonrefundable tax credit for out-of-pocket costs incurred by the caregiver for a specific set of services. This tax credit is essential in supporting the unpaid caregiver and their family with care directly related to special health care needs.

Family caregivers are a vital asset to Nebraska communities

Drayden Sanchez picked through conglomerations of what people hoped would become something new, opening bags like a chef cracking eggs first thing every morning at the Keep Alliance Beautiful Recycling Center. Tragically, he passed away just weeks after joining our crew.

Drayden could be counted among a handful of employees I have hired since being promoted. He was conscientious and dedicated. Parking a few minutes after 8 o’clock, I would look up to see Drayden’s white BMW already at the west end of the lot. We exhausted our backlog of curbside bags to sort for the first time in weeks thanks to this new part-time high school student. In short: he was a great addition to KAB – the type of person you know will move on, yet you hope to hold onto as long as possible.

A couple of weeks ago it seemed Drayden planned to do just that. He called a few days later to say things fell through and asked to return to his two-hour shift. Sure. I assured him he could pick up where he left off and he did. Now, I regret not knowing him better.

At the recycling center, which I often think of as “the shop”, we are a close-knit group, crew or team at the current juncture and enjoy the camaraderie while striving to ship out hundreds of thousands of pounds of recycling each year. It’s that time of year when we will begin seeing those red kettles and Salvation Army bell ringers at area stores. The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign for Box Butte County started November 25 and runs through December 24.&nbsp;It’s our chance to make the holidays brighter for someone in need.

Red kettle donations stay local – directly impacting the lives of our neighbors by helping them in their time of need.&nbsp;The funds raised by Salvation Army bell ringers make a year-round impact to our community through grocery, prescription, utility, motel, and medical gas voucher assistance, as well as emergency services and stranded motorist assistance.&nbsp;Funds serve residents of Box Butte County and are distributed by Northwest Community Action Partnership.

Getting Ahead: Salvation Army bell ringing has begun

LINCOLN —&nbsp;Two former state lawmakers, an Omaha couple that founded a senior home care service and the head of a Lincoln facility that won the first-ever “Coolest Thing Made in Nebraska” contest are the latest inductees into the Nebraska Business Hall of Fame.

The 2025 honorees: John Stinner of Gering, a two-term Nebraska legislator and a banker; Matt Williams of Gothenburg, also a banker and former two-term state senator; Paul and Lori Hogan of Home Instead, and Mike Boyle of Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp. of Lincoln.

The five will officially become hall-of-famers during a&nbsp;<a href="https://web.nechamber.com/events/NebraskaBusiness%20Hall%20of%20Fame%20Banquet-666/details" target="_blank">Jan. 30 event</a>&nbsp;at the Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel.

“This year’s honorees truly represent the entrepreneurial and innovative leadership that is so essential to Nebraska’s growth and success,” said Bryan Slone, president of the statewide chamber.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://business.unl.edu/outreach/awards/nebraska-business-hall-of-fame/" target="_blank">Nebraska Business Hall of Fame</a>&nbsp;was established in 1992 by the chamber and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business to recognize business leaders whose contributions to the state’s economy, job opportunities and business environment are deserving of public acclaim.

Nominations are sought each year from the general business community, statewide associations and academia.&nbsp;

More than<a href="https://business.unl.edu/outreach/awards/nebraska-business-hall-of-fame/" target="_blank">&nbsp;135 business leaders&nbsp;</a>are in the hall.

“The impact this group has had on all sectors of Nebraska business is tremendous and their determination and grit are admirable,” said Kathy Farrell, dean of the UNL College of Business.

Stinner,&nbsp;of Western States Bank in Gering, is a Pennsylvania native who was a member of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s 1970 and 1971 National Championship football teams. He completed his bachelor’s degree at UNL in 1973 and two years later earned a master’s degree&nbsp; in economics.

Stinner moved to western Nebraska when he and a local group of investors opened a bank in Gering. Scotts Bluff County has been home to his family for more than 26 years, and, according to a biography provided by the chamber, the bank he started is now a major employer in the region, with more than a dozen locations in Nebraska.

He was elected to the Nebraska Legislature in 2014 and served two terms.

Williams,&nbsp;of Flatwater Bank in Gothenburg, was born and raised in Gothenburg, where his family was involved with banking and ranching. He received his undergraduate degree and law degree from the University of Nebraska.

Williams grew the family banking business and became chair of both the Nebraska Bankers Association and the American Bankers Association. He represented central Nebraska in the Legislature for eight years, receiving the 2022 Friend of Education Award from the School Administrators Association for introducing legislation to make schools safer by creating the Safe2Help call line.

His service includes a chair position on the Board of Directors of Nebraska Innovation Campus.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Hogans&nbsp;co-founded Home Instead in 1994 and grew it into a worldwide leading provider of home care services for seniors, according to a biography provided by the chamber.

The network includes more than 1,200 independently owned and operated franchise offices across 14 countries. In 2021, the business merged with Honor Technology Inc. and continues to operate under the Home Instead banner.

Lori Hogan, a former Miss Nebraska USA and graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, has served on numerous boards including the Autism Action Partnership and Nebraska Family Alliance.&nbsp;

Paul Hogan is a member of the World Dementia Council and co-authored a USA Today bestseller, “States of Senior Care.”

Boyle,&nbsp;a UNL graduate, started at the Lincoln-based Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp. as a process engineer who, among other duties, designed robot welding cells and brought new jet ski personal watercraft and motorcycles into production.&nbsp;

Promotions led to his 2022 selection as president and CEO, becoming the first non-Japanese president in the history of Kawasaki’s global operations.

In 9 hours of photo time, 59 groups visited us, 400 exposures taken and 103 treat bags were handed out!!&nbsp; And…..over 100 pumpkins and gourds were picked and brought to the studio for the fall backdrops. 

Steph's Studio would like to thank the community for their donations above and beyond what was requested!

A donation of $1,213 was given to the group to purchase toys for the upcoming Christmas party December 15, from 4-6 for families with invitations, at the Eagles Club in Alliance for Santa's Helpers.

Family invitations have been mailed out and Sata's Helpers would like to remind families to return their postcard ASAP.

Over 650 pieces of candy handed out for downtown trick or treat in Alliance

Alliance, NE – A reminder that the City of Alliance Water Department is still in the process of updating water meter radios in residential areas that are regularly accessed by meter readers. Ordinance Number 2120 Section 28-199 can be referenced for information on authorized access.

The Water Department will only access properties during the business hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Employees will be wearing some form of high-visibility clothing and will be accompanied by a City vehicle.

Alliance Water Department updating water meter radios

North Platte, Neb. –&nbsp;Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol arrested four people this weekend after finding more over 30 pounds of cocaine and nearly 30 pounds of marijuana in separate traffic stops.

Saturday at approximately 8:45 a.m. CT, a trooper conducted a traffic stop on a 2023 Acura MDX for improper passing. During the stop, the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity. A search of the vehicle uncovered approximately 33 pounds of cocaine in a hidden compartment.

The driver, Raquel Rocha, 34, and the passenger, Jonathan Cardenas, 45, both of New Jersey, were arrested on charges of possession of cocaine, possession with intent to deliver, and child abuse without injury. Both were taken to the Hamilton County Jail. The child in the vehicle was placed in protective care.

At approximately 11:04 p.m. MT Saturday, a trooper preformed a traffic stop on a Jeep Compass for a speeding violation. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed 29 pounds of marijuana located in a large black duffle bag. The driver, Anthony Lewis, 27, of Lincoln, and the passenger, Demitrius De Shun, 31, of Lincoln, was arrested for was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of marijuana (more than one pound). Both individuals were lodged in Keith County Jail.

CHADRON – Angelyse Perez of Newcastle, Wyoming, is Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for November.

Perez, a junior, is majoring in art studio.

“I really enjoy art. It is something that brings me a lot of joy and I’ve done it for such a long time. It gives me a way to communicate who I am,” Perez said

Perez, who has been involved in Project Strive for about two years, is the treasurer and social media coordinator for the United Club, participates in the Art Guild, and occasionally works with the Campus Activity Board, Sigma Tau Delta, and Tenth Street Miscellany by making posters and social media flyers. Perez has helped with two activities sponsored by the United Club, The Clothesline Project and the Trans Visibility event.

“Angel has been a great member of the Project Strive family. She is quick to help others in the program and give them guidance and support. These are just a couple of the many values that make Angel a great student and person. Her passion for art and photography will take her far in life,” said Project Strive Director Jennifer Schaer.

Perez learned about CSC through a friend and decided to tour campus, even though her original plans were to attend college in Oregon.

“I like the atmosphere, it’s small and quaint. I enjoyed the professors when they showed me around the art department. I also come from a small town. I was afraid that if I went to a big school, I might experience some major whiplash,” Perez said.

Perez has always had an interest in art. She practices both digital and traditional art and enjoys surrounding herself with other artists, students, and professors, as they have impacted the way she views art.

While at Chadron State, Perez has enjoyed taking classes from faculty members Mary Donahue, Laura Bentz, and Trudy Denham, and writing classes taught by Markus Jones.

“Angel Perez is a bright and creative student whose intellect and imagination shine in everything she does. She has an extraordinary ability to notice the nuances of the world around her, transforming these observations into powerful stories and insightful class discussions,” Jones said.

Jones said Perez is a deeply curious and studious individual.

“Angel seamlessly blends creativity with analytical thinking, producing remarkable class responses and impressive projects that reflect her originality and dedication. Her unique writing voice and sharp intellect make her work a joy to read,” Jones said.

Some of Perez’s favorite classes have been Painting I (ART 232) and II (ART 332) with Bentz and Ceramics II (ART 428) with Denham.

“I had only worked with oil painting for a brief moment in high school, so I was excited to be able to explore that a little more in Painting I. It’s a beginner class so she lets us start where we are at and then builds on it. Painting II allowed for more experimentation. In this class, painting was not only used as a way of communicating, but we also mixed media into it. Ceramics can be irritating sometimes, but it can also be relaxing and calming. Plus, I enjoy Trudy as a teacher,” Perez said.

Bentz said Perez, as a first-generation student, has fearlessly faced the challenges of college.

“She is curious about the world and has taken a broad range of classes outside her Art major. All of those classes feed her creativity and inform the images she creates,” Bentz said.

When not working&nbsp;<a>on</a>&nbsp;assignments, Perez enjoys hanging out with friends, doing personal art projects, playing video games, writing stories and poetry, and practicing photography.

Perez plans to graduate in December 2025, but is unsure what her future holds.

“I hope to work in an art museum or art-related field. Maybe a studio,” Perez said.

Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO program, located in the lower level of the King Library, is an academic enrichment program committed to help students succeed. Project Strive also focuses on career exploration, cultural and social enrichment, and self-awareness.
