Alliance Water Department updating water meter radios

North Platte, Neb. –&nbsp;Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol arrested four people this weekend after finding more over 30 pounds of cocaine and nearly 30 pounds of marijuana in separate traffic stops.

Saturday at approximately 8:45 a.m. CT, a trooper conducted a traffic stop on a 2023 Acura MDX for improper passing. During the stop, the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity. A search of the vehicle uncovered approximately 33 pounds of cocaine in a hidden compartment.

The driver, Raquel Rocha, 34, and the passenger, Jonathan Cardenas, 45, both of New Jersey, were arrested on charges of possession of cocaine, possession with intent to deliver, and child abuse without injury. Both were taken to the Hamilton County Jail. The child in the vehicle was placed in protective care.

At approximately 11:04 p.m. MT Saturday, a trooper preformed a traffic stop on a Jeep Compass for a speeding violation. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed 29 pounds of marijuana located in a large black duffle bag. The driver, Anthony Lewis, 27, of Lincoln, and the passenger, Demitrius De Shun, 31, of Lincoln, was arrested for was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of marijuana (more than one pound). Both individuals were lodged in Keith County Jail.

CHADRON – Angelyse Perez of Newcastle, Wyoming, is Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for November.

Perez, a junior, is majoring in art studio.

“I really enjoy art. It is something that brings me a lot of joy and I’ve done it for such a long time. It gives me a way to communicate who I am,” Perez said

Perez, who has been involved in Project Strive for about two years, is the treasurer and social media coordinator for the United Club, participates in the Art Guild, and occasionally works with the Campus Activity Board, Sigma Tau Delta, and Tenth Street Miscellany by making posters and social media flyers. Perez has helped with two activities sponsored by the United Club, The Clothesline Project and the Trans Visibility event.

“Angel has been a great member of the Project Strive family. She is quick to help others in the program and give them guidance and support. These are just a couple of the many values that make Angel a great student and person. Her passion for art and photography will take her far in life,” said Project Strive Director Jennifer Schaer.

Perez learned about CSC through a friend and decided to tour campus, even though her original plans were to attend college in Oregon.

“I like the atmosphere, it’s small and quaint. I enjoyed the professors when they showed me around the art department. I also come from a small town. I was afraid that if I went to a big school, I might experience some major whiplash,” Perez said.

Perez has always had an interest in art. She practices both digital and traditional art and enjoys surrounding herself with other artists, students, and professors, as they have impacted the way she views art.

While at Chadron State, Perez has enjoyed taking classes from faculty members Mary Donahue, Laura Bentz, and Trudy Denham, and writing classes taught by Markus Jones.

“Angel Perez is a bright and creative student whose intellect and imagination shine in everything she does. She has an extraordinary ability to notice the nuances of the world around her, transforming these observations into powerful stories and insightful class discussions,” Jones said.

Jones said Perez is a deeply curious and studious individual.

“Angel seamlessly blends creativity with analytical thinking, producing remarkable class responses and impressive projects that reflect her originality and dedication. Her unique writing voice and sharp intellect make her work a joy to read,” Jones said.

Some of Perez’s favorite classes have been Painting I (ART 232) and II (ART 332) with Bentz and Ceramics II (ART 428) with Denham.

“I had only worked with oil painting for a brief moment in high school, so I was excited to be able to explore that a little more in Painting I. It’s a beginner class so she lets us start where we are at and then builds on it. Painting II allowed for more experimentation. In this class, painting was not only used as a way of communicating, but we also mixed media into it. Ceramics can be irritating sometimes, but it can also be relaxing and calming. Plus, I enjoy Trudy as a teacher,” Perez said.

Bentz said Perez, as a first-generation student, has fearlessly faced the challenges of college.

“She is curious about the world and has taken a broad range of classes outside her Art major. All of those classes feed her creativity and inform the images she creates,” Bentz said.

When not working&nbsp;<a>on</a>&nbsp;assignments, Perez enjoys hanging out with friends, doing personal art projects, playing video games, writing stories and poetry, and practicing photography.

Perez plans to graduate in December 2025, but is unsure what her future holds.

“I hope to work in an art museum or art-related field. Maybe a studio,” Perez said.

APD, AVFD, NSP, Box Butte Co. Sheriff's Office respond to fatal accident 

By&nbsp;UNITED STATES ATTORNEY SUSAN T. LEHR

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Tyler Denby, age 39, formerly of Alliance, Nebraska, was sentenced on November 21, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for one count of transportation of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Denby to 262 months’ imprisonment.&nbsp; There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp; After Denby’s release from prison, he will begin a 10-year term of supervised release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

On July 30th&nbsp;of 2021, Alliance Police Department received two separate calls for assistance concerning an individual threatening others in the Alliance area. Denby, who was then a Montana resident visiting the town of Alliance, was identified as the suspect, and was contacted at a local gas station.&nbsp; During the encounter, responding officers gained probable cause to search Denby’s vehicle when a marijuana pipe was spotted in his pocket. A stolen firearm was then located on Denby’s person. During the search of his vehicle, a large number of electronic devices, and a pillowcase filled with stained children’s underwear, were discovered by the searching law enforcement officers with the Alliance Police Department and Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office. The items were seized from the vehicle and Denby was arrested for several state crimes.

A search warrant was received for the numerous electronic devices. The devices were later reviewed by the Alliance Police Department. Three microSD cards which had been located in Denby’s wallet contained a substantial amount of child pornography files. While Denby was in custody, he was interviewed by law enforcement, and he admitted to having child pornography on those devices.&nbsp; He also admitted to travelling from Montana to Nebraska with the child pornography on his devices.

The case proceeded to a jury trial in August of 2024, and Denby was convicted of possessing and transporting child pornography.

In pronouncing Denby’s sentence, Judge Bazis told him “There is no question in my mind you are a danger to the public and to children.” Stressing the need of a sentence to protect the public, the Judge also commented “I don’t think you think you did anything.”&nbsp;

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. CHADRON – Comedian Larry the Cable Guy will perform in Chadron March 2, 2025, at the conclusion of a six-week tour called Larry’s Nebraska Road Trip. Larry the Cable Guy to perform at Chadron State College 

Early this morning, the Alliance Police Department received a tip that a runaway juvenile from Lawrence, KS may be in Alliance. Kuel Karbino Kuel, M/B 16 years old, had been missing since October 18 th .

 Throughout the morning our communications center received several calls from citizens stating that they had spotted the juvenile, however, he continued to elude officers. 

At approximately 12:30pm, officers received another call that the juvenile was in the area of 1 st St walking east toward Yellowstone. The clothing description was aired to all units and officers converged on the area. Officer Dahlberg spotted the juvenile who fled on foot. 

After a brief foot chase, Officer Dahlberg was able to apprehend the juvenile and detain him to check his welfare and confirm his identity. The juvenile will also have local charges for marijuana possession.

 Arrangements are underway for an interstate transfer to have the juvenile transported back to Kansas. 

This is another great example of the exemplary work done by our officers here in Alliance!

 </figure>Early this morning, the Alliance Police Department received a tip that a runaway juvenile from Lawrence, KS may be in Alliance. Kuel Karbino Kuel, M/B 16 years old, had been missing since October 18 th . Throughout the morning our communications center received several calls from citizens stating that they had spotted the juvenile, however, he continued to elude officers. At approximately 12:30pm, officers received another call that the juvenile was in the area of 1 st St walking east toward Yellowstone. The clothing description was aired to all units and officers converged on the area. Officer Dahlberg spotted the juvenile who fled on foot. After a brief foot chase, Officer Dahlberg was able to apprehend the juvenile and detain him to check his welfare and confirm his identity. The juvenile will also have local charges for marijuana possession. Arrangements are underway for an interstate transfer to have the juvenile transported back to Kansas. This is another great example of the exemplary work done by our officers here in Alliance!

LINCOLN —&nbsp;Nebraska is seeking to “tear up” a national legal contract among four major manufacturers of semitrucks that seeks to increase electric vehicles and comply with California emissions rules.

Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers announced the&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=59-801" target="_blank">state-level</a>&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=59-1603" target="_blank">antitrust</a>&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/semitruck-manufacturers-CTP-antitrust-lawsuit.pdf">lawsuit</a>&nbsp;Tuesday against Daimler Truck North America, International Motors Inc. (formerly Navistar Inc.), PACCAR Inc., and Volvo Group North America, as well as the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association. The lawsuit was filed in Lincoln County District Court, in North Platte, which Hilgers described as “the epicenter for transportation” in Nebraska.

The Energy Markets of America and Renewable Fuels Nebraska joined Hilgers in the challenge.

“This isn’t about cars,” Kent Grisham, president and CEO of the Nebraska Trucking Association, said Tuesday. “This is about a political agenda. This is about a movement that has developed a following and has backed companies into a corner that we simply cannot allow to be sustained.”

Ford Motor Company and Cummins Inc. also joined the July 2023 “<a href="https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/default/files/2024-10/Final%20Clean%20Truck%20Partnership%20Agreement_CARB%2C%20EMA%2C%20and%20Ford%202023_07_05.pdf" target="_blank">Clean Truck Partnership</a>,” which Liane Randolph, chair of the California Air Resources Board, described as an “unprecedented collaboration” that “marks a new era in our zero-emission future.”

“This agreement makes it clear that we have shared goals to tackle pollution and climate change and to ensure the success of the truck owners and operators who provide critical services to California’s economy,” Randolph said in a&nbsp;<a href="https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/news/carb-and-truck-and-engine-manufacturers-announce-unprecedented-partnership-meet-clean-air" target="_blank">July 6, 2023, statement</a>.

Jed Mandel, president of the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association, said at the time that the partnership reaffirmed a longstanding commitment to reduce emissions and move to a “<a href="https://afdc.energy.gov/laws/california-standards#/tab-zev" target="_blank">zero-emissions commercial vehicle future</a>,” with necessary lead time for manufacturers.

The challenged manufacturers are all organized in Delaware, with their principal places of business in Portland, Oregon; Lisle, Illinois; Bellevue, Washington; and Greensboro, North Carolina. The trade association, which negotiated the agreement, is based in Chicago.

Hilgers argued the partnership is unlawful because the four semitruck manufacturers have an “oligopoly” on manufacturing Class 8 trucks (defined as trucks over 33,001 pounds), including:

Together, the four manufacturers produce 99.9% of the market share for Class 8 trucks, so a move to electric vehicles could increase the cost of internal combustion engine vehicles, the lawsuit argues.

The partnership spurred from regulations under the California Air Resources Board, which Hilgers also&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/05/13/multistate-nebraska-led-lawsuits-target-california-and-epa-emission-regulations/">sued in federal court</a>&nbsp;in May. At that time, Hilgers also sued the Environmental Protection Agency under President Joe Biden for&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/nebraska-other-attorneys-general-challenge-california-regulation-on-big-trucks/">electric vehicle mandates and regulations</a>.

“Unfortunately, it’s not just states and it’s not just the Biden administration,” Hilgers said Tuesday. “It is also companies, like these four defendants, who are working together to try to dictate national policies for Nebraskans and Americans.”

The newest lawsuit alleges that the manufacturing partnership would be harmful to Nebraska, as&nbsp;<a href="https://afdc.energy.gov/laws/california-standards#/tab-act" target="_blank">10 states other than California</a>&nbsp;have adopted an “Advanced Clean Trucks” rule to reduce emissions and increase electric vehicles. The manufacturers agreed to comply with the standards in those states and any that will adopt the standards, regardless of legal challenges.

As part of the California standards, the manufacturers agreed in summer 2023 to reduce heavy-duty vehicle emissions and sell as many zero-emission trucks “as reasonably possible,” annually increasing sales as a percentage of overall medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.

“The foregoing requirements make it likely that Defendants will treat Nebraska as a state that ‘will adopt’ or ‘may choose to’ adopt the [Advanced Clean Trucks] rule,” Hilgers’ office wrote.

The lawsuit points to two examples important to Nebraska: the livestock and grain industries.

As Nebraska is the nation’s top beef exporter, and second in the nation for number of cattle, at 6.25 million head, it would be dangerous to utilize electric trucks, according to the lawsuit. That’s in part because the state doesn’t have a charging infrastructure, and charging takes more time than refueling.

Many cattle are transported from the Nebraska Sandhills or South Dakota to feedlots in southeast Nebraska, well over 500 miles.

“Cattle feeders could never utilize Class 8 ZEV [zero-emission vehicle] trucks to transport these animals, as the livestock would be stranded at a station in excessive heat or freezing temperatures waiting for the truck to charge its batteries, leading to untold death and injury,” the lawsuit states.

Grain producers also already work 12-16 hours per day using Class 8 internal combustion engine vehicles to haul products to market. Should they need to charge their trucks, twice per day at 3-5 hours each, that would be impractical or lead to increased costs for current trucks.

Grisham said that charging a single Class 8 truck requires the same amount of electricity as what the Empire State Building uses in an entire day. Hilgers added that could be more than a small Nebraska community.

Grisham said the “tsunami effect” will mean Nebraska truckers have “no choice” but to accept the status quo if the brakes aren’t put on the mandates.

No charging stations for Class 8 trucks currently exist in Nebraska, Grisham said, and he’s unaware of any electric Class 8 truck moving through Nebraska, particularly as there are no charging stations along Interstate 80 or other major corridors.&nbsp;

“We’re still at ground zero,” Grisham said.

Grisham estimated it would cost $624 billion to install charging stations nationwide and about $370 billion to improve the national distribution of electrical power. It would cost about $9 billion to improve Nebraska’s distribution network.

Those figures don’t include billions more in operational costs, the costs of the trucks or changes to labor, such as more frequent stops for recharging, Grisham said, and there remain major concerns over whether the nation can produce enough power for the new demand.

He added that the Nebraska Trucking Association isn’t against battery-powered vehicles, which can help reduce emissions, Grisham said, but so can technological advancements leading to fewer emissions for new fleets.

“We want an ‘everything’s on the table’ approach so that we can continue to make the great progress that we have in controlling emissions,” Grisham said.

Hilgers’ office is seeking the following action:

“At the end of the day, what we’re trying to do is tear up this agreement and allow the free market and the nation’s elected representatives to determine the pace and scope of any change in our national logistics policy,” Hilgers said.

Alliance, NE – City Ordinance Municipal Code Section 26-50 has been amended to allow two-way traffic in the alley between Box Butte &amp;amp; Niobrara Avenue and &nbsp;4 th &amp; 5 th &nbsp;Street. 

This alley was previously designated as a one-way alley. This amendment was passed by City Council on 11/19/2024. There will be sign removal of the one-way sign and a temporary sign placement for two-way traffic to err on the side of caution for this transition period.

City of Alliance updates Ordinance Municipal Code Section 26-50

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– Nebraska Extension Beef Educator, T.L. Meyer is celebrating 25&nbsp; years at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Through her 25 years at the university, Meyer has served in a variety of roles that each played a&nbsp; unique part in her career.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Beginning at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center, Meyer started her&nbsp; career at UNL as a communications associate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I was originally drawn to the role at West Central because I wanted to return to the Sandhills of&nbsp; Nebraska that I was familiar with growing up,” Meyer said.&nbsp;

She served in the communications role for four years before becoming a research technologist at&nbsp; the center.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Transitioning to the research role brought Meyer many opportunities. She was able to return to&nbsp; the hands-on work with cattle that she enjoyed and finish working on her master’s degree in&nbsp; animal science from the University of Nebraska—Lincoln.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Pursuing a master’s degree was one of the greatest perks that I could work on while being an&nbsp; employee at the university,” Meyer said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Continuously learning new things is one aspect of her career that Meyer enjoys the most. Yet,&nbsp; Meyer has still found unique ways to utilize her academic degrees in different ways.

While her two degrees in animal science help serve ranchers in Nebraska, her degree in ag&nbsp; journalism helps reach them through her unique approach to social media.&nbsp;

Meyer uses Facebook, Instagram, and X to reach her audience and continuously update them on&nbsp; changes in the industry and opportunities that could help them strengthen their operations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While only serving in her most recent role for five years, Meyer hopes to continue impacting&nbsp; ranchers in the Nebraska Sandhills and beyond by providing them with valuable sources of&nbsp; information.&nbsp;

Domestic violence isn’t limited by race, gender, or income. It’s a widespread issue that can affect anyone, yet the experience of abuse is different for survivors who live in poverty. When financial resources are scarce, the barriers to leaving an abusive relationship can feel insurmountable. Poverty doesn't cause domestic violence, but it can amplify it, creating a cycle where survivors are forced to choose between violence and destitution.

Research shows that financial strain is a significant factor in domestic violence, with families experiencing poverty facing a 9.5% rate of domestic abuse compared to 2.5% among those not facing financial hardship. This isn’t because poverty causes violence—it’s because abusers often exploit economic hardship to control their victims. Financial abuse is a common tactic: survivors report that 99% of abusers take control of household finances, restrict their access to money, or prevent them from working. This leaves survivors trapped, unable to leave without facing homelessness or worse poverty, especially if they have children.

The stress of living paycheck to paycheck can escalate anger and conflict in a household. The constant pressure of not having enough can fuel arguments and worsen an abuser’s controlling behaviors. Poverty doesn’t create violence, but it can heighten the volatility of already abusive dynamics, making every day a potential danger for survivors. Financial hardship feeds feelings of powerlessness, increasing the likelihood of violence as an unhealthy outlet for frustration.

Survivors living in poverty often face impossible choices. When money is tight, seeking medical care after an assault may be out of the question. Emergency room visits, counseling sessions, and even routine healthcare can seem like luxuries they simply can’t afford. Legal assistance is another hurdle. Without money for a lawyer, survivors face a justice system that is inaccessible, especially when abusers use court hearings as a tactic to drain victims financially and force them to miss work, risking their job security.

Access to safe housing is yet another obstacle. Even when survivors find the courage and resources to leave, the lack of affordable housing options can force them back into the arms of their abusers. Shelters are often full, and waiting lists for low-income housing are often long. Many survivors are faced with a stark reality: endure the abuse, or risk homelessness.

For survivors living in poverty, food insecurity is a constant worry. The inability to feed themselves and their children can be a powerful deterrent against leaving an abusive partner. Food assistance programs can help, but they often come with restrictions and limitations, leaving families hungry and desperate. We need to dismantle the economic barriers that keep survivors trapped, from wage inequality and lack of paid leave, to inaccessible legal and healthcare services. By addressing the root causes of financial dependency and prioritizing policies that empower survivors, we can break the cycle of abuse and poverty that leaves too many families stuck in a relentless loop of violence.

Bruce Furniture opened its doors in October 1977 on West Third Street in Alliance. The first of five stores in central and western Nebraska still operates in the original location, in a building that housed The American Legion. Not long after joining Keep Alliance Beautiful, I noticed radio spots mentioning how the company recycles furniture. Delving into the practice never reached the top of my list until recently when I interviewed Michelle Garrett, store manager, regarding the store’s emphasis on recycling since the first of the year.

Like other local businesses, Bruce Furniture took advantage of our no-cost recycling program. Michelle asked if they could use KAB’s IBC totes. What started with two this past winter soon became three followed by stuffing their own bags for Hefty ReNew (formerly Hefty Energybag program). “We’re saving the earth, keeping things out of the landfill,” she said. “We used to go twice a week, now it’s twice a month.”

Though the entire staff is enthusiastic about the difference achieved by recycling corrugated and fiberboard cardboard as well as plastic, Michelle took the initiative upon her promotion to manager Jan. 1, 2024. She returned to Bruce Furniture in June 2020 for a part-time sales associate and office position, now held by Zoe Cole, after working there a couple years a couple decades prior. Her son Austin Garrett, Brandon Gange and Jesse Ribillet breakdown furniture, appliance and other boxes and packing materials to recycle as part of their duties in the warehouse. Recycling is also common at home for the staff or something they plan to incorporate. Brandon mentioned how he has been learning about it through his son’s school.

Interacting with the people who recycle at the businesses we serve remains relatively rare. The Ganges have been one of our family’s neighbors for some time though I did not realize Brandon worked for Bruce Furniture until the first time they brought a van load of orange bags down to the recycling center. Last week Jesse helped me load KAB’s old pickup to the top of the rack as they began utilizing appliance boxes with the smaller pieces of cardboard instead of transferring the fragments to a tote. While taking a group photo for this column as couple stopped by and left with the plastic bags that had covered three queen-size mattresses to reuse.

Michelle explained, “We started saving plastic recently. About everything we get in we recycle. I tell the guys all the time ‘You’re saving the Earth.’ It does take time, but it’s worth it. I feel better as a manager we’re recycling. Should have done it a long time ago.”

Other than what ends up at KAB, people are welcome to take old furniture the staff sets out. “When we have old appliances, we have a group that picks it up for scrap metal,” Michelle added. Furniture components are recyclable and reusable. “We might have one to fix a 20-year-old chair,” she said, noting that new parts are not always available.

Bruce’s Alliance store will soon have a year’s worth of data on a renewed commitment to recycling. “We try to save money and cut waste,” Michelle said. “It helps the business and we can put the money elsewhere as we try to support the community.”

Between October 22 and November 23 the Carnegie Arts Center will be hosting an exhibit honoring the late Gretchen Garwood in the Studio Gallery. Pieces in the show include paintings and sketches created during Gretchen’s life as an artist.

Alongside a dedicated team of innovative and ambitious local individuals Gretchen Garwood brought the Carnegie Arts Center to life.

To pass the time while caring for her son, Mike, after his accident in 1973, Gretchen started to paint. For the next 40-plus years her artistic abilities improved and flourished. Her artistic creations have hung on the walls of relatives, friends, acquaintances, and businesses. Gretchen was instrumental in bringing about the Carnegie Arts Center in Alliance. Her dream began in 1985 and along with other Alliance residents in the idea of an arts center was formed to provide cultural experiences for all ages. The Carnegie Library Building was scheduled for demolition and before that could happen, the 1911 building was purchased for $24,000. Grants were written, local support was received, and over $250,000 was spent on renovation. In March of 1993, after two years of legal work and six years of remolding, a grand opening was held. In 2008, the west wing was dedicated as the Gretchen Garwood Gallery. Gretchen served on the board of directors and the endowment committee.

In 2000, Gretchen received the Diana Nelson Volunteer of the Year in the Arts Award. She, along with 11 others, was honored at the Nebraska First Lady, Stephanie Johanns’ luncheon.

One of Gretchen’s favorite stories was bout the early days of the Carnegie Library when the building’s roof was in disrepair, and severe storms would cause flooding. Gretchen and Peggy Weber would take matters into their own hands, venturing to the newspaper office to collect day-old newspapers. With those, they’d soak up the water in the building before heaving the soggy stacks of papers back out. Their first fundraisers they didn’t have enough plates for salad and dessert, so they’d have to rush plates back into the kitchen to wash and dry before bringing out the next course. Gretchen not only put her intelligent mind to work building Carnegie, but also her blood, sweat, and tears.

More than anything, Gretchen cultivated Carnegie Arts Center with boundless love. The countless individuals who have devoted decades to building and nurturing every aspect of this institution are a testament to the love they share for one another, for this place, and nurturing every aspect of this institution are testament to the love they share for one another, for this place, and for the profound impact it has on people’s lives. Carnegie is a labor of love, and oh man, is it easy to fall in love with. With that same loving spirit that breathed life into their dream turned reality, we will continue to honor our founder, our leader, and dear friend, Gretchen Garwood.

The Carnegie Presents LEGACY: PIECES CREATED BY GRETCHEN GARWOOD

Alliance, NE — Box Butte Development Corporation (BBDC) hosted its 37th Annual Members Meeting and Business Awards on Friday, November 15, at its office at 502 Box Butte. Over 30 attendees gathered for coffee, networking and updates as BBDC highlighted a year of progress and celebrated outstanding contributions to the community.

The meeting was kicked off by BBDC Board President Dave Weber, who led the election of Lacy Willey, Vice President and Loan Officer at Nebraska Bank, and Maverick Churchill, an Independent Member, to their second three-year terms on the BBDC Board of Directors.

Hannah Robinson, BBDC’s Executive Director, shared a review of her first eight months in leadership, focusing on major initiatives such as the Rural Workforce Housing Fund, the Communities for Kids childcare planning grant, and workforce development efforts. She highlighted a successful transition in leadership and also touched on the organization’s commitment to the strategic planning that will guide BBDC’s goals over the next five years.

Flor and Fletcher Sheridan received the Entrepreneurs of the Year Award for their transformative efforts in revitalizing the historic Newberry’s building in Alliance. Their restaurant, Golden Hour Barbecue, has become a community hub, offering award- winning Texas-style barbecue and hosting seasonal markets in their banquet hall. Their vision and dedication have brought both economic vitality and a welcoming gathering space to Box Butte County.

Small Business of the Year: Table Top Meats

The Small Business of the Year Award was presented to Table Top Meats, owned by Taelar and Clayton Krause. Since taking over the business in 2016, the family has implemented innovative practices, including acquiring a new composter for efficiencies when it comes to waste and enhancing their downtown Hemingford location with a new sign. Known for their community engagement, they also coach 4-H Meat Judging teams and partner with local businesses to bring quality products to the area.

BBDC celebrates excellence in business at Annual Members Meeting

LINCOLN —&nbsp;Budding farmers and 4-H students who captured pet and other poultry in winning photographic images will see their work featured in a special Nebraska Department of Agriculture 2025 calendar.

The calendar also includes important biosecurity information that poultry owners can use to protect their flocks. It can be&nbsp;<a href="https://nda.nebraska.gov/animal/avian/contest/2025PoultryCalendar.pdf" target="_blank">viewed and downloaded&nbsp;</a>from the state agency’s website.&nbsp;

NDA Director Sherry Vinton said the poultry photo contest shows how 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) members “go the extra mile to make sure their birds are well cared for and healthy.”
