Alliance, Neb - The NSAA announced on Thursday morning subdistrict pairings for volleyball. The Alliance Bulldogs will travel to Gering next Tuesday for the B-8 Volleyball Subdistricts. Alliance will be the #4 seed with Gering as #2, Scottsbluff #3 and Sidney #4.

We will have postseason coverage on KCOW FM 92.5/AM 1400 with Canon Rath. Times are still to be determined for next week's postseason matches.&nbsp;

Alliance to travel to Gering for the B-8 Volleyball Subdistricts

Alliance, Neb. - As the fall season for high school sports is nearing the end including cross country, two Alliance boys' cross country runners are preparing for the upcoming state championship meet this Friday at the Kearney Country Club.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Zurn is a junior and will be entering and is heading to the state for the second time after making state with the team last year. Last year was Zurn first year running cross country. He is also involved with track which he has been doing since middle school.&nbsp;

Saka, a sophomore, will also be heading back to Kearney for a second time. He enjoys playing soccer but started doing track and cross country as he got older.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last week, Zurn and Saka ran in Overton at the B-3 District race. Zurn placed third (16:25.00) and Saka placed twelfth (17:37:04). Both runners qualified as individual racers. The Class B Boys race will begin at 11:00am (MT)/12:00pm (CT) at the Kearney County Club. (Audio) Alliance High Trevor Zurn and Asher Saka preparing for the 2024 NSAA Class B State Cross Country Championships

The 17th-ranked Colorado Mesa volleyball team swept Chadron State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match Tuesday night. The scores were 25-17, 25-17, 26-24.

The Eagles put up a good fight in all three sets, hitting .206 for the match while the Mavericks had a hitting percentage of .263. The Mavericks finished with a total of 45 kills and nine service aces while CSC had a total of 35 kills but also 47 digs for the match.

For the Eagles, Alejandra Briseno had 10 kills and both Kally Kirkwood and Mataya Ward had a total of eight kills. Kirkwood also only had one attack error and led the Eagles with a hitting percentage of .333. Alondra Hernandez led the Eagles with 16 digs. 

The Mavericks were led by Nicole Martin with 14 kills while Sydney Leffler finished with 10. Martin also led the Mavs with a hitting percentage of .500. Leffler and Allison Waller tied for the team lead with a total of 11 digs.

In the first set, the Mavericks jumped out to a 4-1 lead and kept the lead for the entire game. Briseno kept the Eagles in close range with four kills throughout the set, but the Eagles hitting percentage of .250 wasn't enough to outpower the Mavericks' .300 hitting percentage. After a Briseno kill that made the score 12-10 CMU, the Mavericks scored seven of the next eight points to take a 19-11 lead, eventually winning the set 25-17.

Going into the second set the Eagles came out ready for a different outcome. Four straight kills from Avery Lacy, Kally Kirkwood, Alondra Hernandez and Bella Adams gave the Eagles a 7-1 lead. The Mavericks came back, however, as Nicole Martin had four straight kills to turn a 12-9 Eagles lead to a 13-12 Mavericks lead. The score stayed close until 18-17 in favor of Mesa before the Mavericks finished the set with seven straight points to win the second set 25-17.

The third set was the closest set of the match with 13 ties throughout the set. The Eagles started by pulling ahead 8-4 with five attack errors from the Mavericks and a pair of kills from Mataya Ward. The Mavericks tied up the set with the score 9-9 with a kill from Nicole Martin, an ace from Jordan Woods and an attack error. The Eagles and the Mavericks rallied back and forth with points until the Eagles took a three-point lead with kills from Ward and Kally Kirkwood and an attack error from the Mavericks to make the score 19-16. The Eagles led 24-23 and had a set point, but the Mavericks tied the game at 24 with a block from Stormi Tadlock and Sierra Hunt, followed by a pair of kills from Hunt to win the final set 26-24 and clinch the match.

A trio of former Nebraska Cornhuskers are listed on opening night rosters as the NBA season begins on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp; Dalano Banton and Bryce McGowens are teammates on the Portland Trail Blazers, while Jack McVeigh is a rookie with the Houston Rockets.&nbsp; It is the fourth straight season that Nebraska has had multiple players on NBA rosters.&nbsp; While Opening Night is set for Tuesday, both Portland and Houston begin their NBA seasons on Wednesday.

Banton comes off his best season as a professional, averaging 10.3 points 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while splitting time with both the Boston Celtics and Portland Trailblazers. He flourished after his trade with Portland, averaging 16.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in 30 games. Banton begins his fourth NBA season after being a second-round pick in 2021. After sitting out the 2019-20 campaign, Banton played in all 27 games, including 22 starts, for the Huskers in 2020-21, averaging 9.6 points per game while leading the Huskers in both rebounding (5.9) and assists (3.9) per game. He was the first Husker since 1974 to lead NU in both rebounding and assists in the same season.&nbsp; Banton posted the second triple-double in school history with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in just 21 minutes against Doane and totaled 14 games in double figures.

McGowens begins his third NBA season, as he is on a two-way contract with the Trail Blazers after signing with the organization over the summer. McGowens spent the first two years with the Charlotte Hornets, playing in 105 career games and averaging 5.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.&nbsp; McGowens was the No. 40 overall pick in 2022, the highest drafted Husker since 1998.&nbsp; At Nebraska, he was a third-team All-Big Ten performer as a freshman in 2021-22, averaging a team-high 16.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. An eight-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, McGowens had 11 games with 20-or-more points, including a season-high 29 points against both Sam Houston and Rutgers.

McVeigh is with the Houston Rockets after signing a two-way contract prior to the 2024 Paris Olympics. He played in a pair of preseason games for the Rockets, averaging 7.5 ppg on 60 percent shooting and 3.0 rebounds per game.&nbsp; This is his rookie season after he played professionally in Australia and Germany, and he will become the 16th Husker to play in the NBA when he makes his debut.&nbsp; McVeigh comes off a strong performance in the 2024 Olympics, averaging 9.5 points per game on 52 percent shooting, including 10-of-19 (.526) from 3-point range. McVeigh played three seasons at Nebraska before returning home to begin his professional career. His best year was in 2016-17, when he averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in 30 games, including 11 starts. Miu Takahashi recorded a hole-in-one on her way to a 71 (-1) to lead the Nebraska women's golf team in the final round of the Jim West Challenge in San Marcos, Texas on Monday.

Takahashi, a senior from Nasu-machi, Japan, aced the 165-yard, par-3 fourth hole to highlight her best round of the season on the 6,111-yard, par-72 layout at the Kissing Tree Golf Course.

Takahashi closed the tournament in a tie for 61st, while helping the Huskers&nbsp; to an 11th-place team finish in the 12-team field.

Lauren Thiele led Nebraska with a three-round total of 226 (+10) to tie for 49th overall in the 68-player field. The redshirt sophomore from Wahoo, Neb., produced rounds of 73 and 76 on Monday, before closing with a 77 Tuesday.

Sophomore Hannah Kono was NU's No. 3 finisher in the tournament with her tie for 56th at 231 with three consecutive rounds of 77 (+5).&nbsp;

Freshman Danica Lundgren (Austin, Texas) rounded out the Husker contingent in a tie for 65th at 239 (+23), including a final-round 74 (+2) on Tuesday that counted toward Nebraska's team total.

No. 23 TCU won the team title with a three-round total of 842 (-22), one shot better than runner-up Houston at 843 (-21). Oklahoma took third at 844 (-20), while Ohio State and Texas Tech tied for fourth at 849 (-15).&nbsp;

Nebraska closed with a three-round score of 915 (+51) to finish one shot ahead of Northern Illinois.

TCU's Kirstin Angosta took medalist honors at 206 (-10) with a one-stroke win over five golfers, including teammate Camille Min-Gaultier, UNLV's McKenzi Hall, New Mexico's Maria Garcia, Texas Tech's Lauren Zaretsky and Oklahoma's Reagan Chaney.

Takahashi Hole-in-One highlights Huskers in Texas

The Nebraska women’s cross country team jumped to No. 6 in the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Rankings on Monday. The Huskers moved up five spots after being ranked No. 11 last week.

Over the course of the 2024 season, the women have finished in first place at two meets – the Augustana Twilight and Greeno/Dirksen Invitational – and third at the Bill Dellinger Invitational.

At the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Oct. 11, every women’s team member set either a personal best or season high in the 6k.&nbsp;Berlyn Schutz has led the team, finishing first at the Augustana Twilight, 10th at the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational and fourth at the Bill Dellinger Invitational. Schutz was recognized as the Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week after claiming her individual title at the Augustana Twilight. Husker Women ranked Sixth in Midwest Region

Lincoln, Neb.&nbsp;- Despite outshooting the Huskies 25-9, the Nebraska soccer team fell 2-0 to Washington at home on Senior Sunday.&nbsp;

Nebraska also held the advantage in corners (7-0), but Washington led in shots on goal (7-5) and saves (7-3), as the Huskers dropped to 5-10-1 (2-7-1 Big Ten) on the season and Washington improved to 9-5-2 (6-4-0 Big Ten).&nbsp;

Nebraska was on the offensive attack early, as Sarah Weber tallied the opening two shots of the game, but it was Washington that recorded the first finish for either team. In the seventh minute, Ioanna Papatheodorou scored off assists from Samiah Shell and Kelsey Branson.

Going into the half, the Huskers held the lead in shots (14-7) and corners (4-0), while the Huskies tallied one more shot on goal (4-3). Individually, Weber led the way for the Huskers with six shots and freshman Reese Snowden added three of her own. Abbey Schwarz, Lauryn Anglim and Gwen Lane each recorded a shot on frame.

In the second half, the Huskers recorded 11 shots, including a few late chances to score, but Washington’s Alex Buck stretched the Huskie lead to 2-0 after a turnover in the Husker backfield in the 68th minute.&nbsp;

Weber’s nine shots on the day brings her career total to 330, just shy of Meghan Anderson in second place in the Husker record books. Overall, 10 Huskers recorded at least one shot, and two Huskers played the complete game, Haley Peterson and Anglim.&nbsp;

The Huskers wrap up regular season play as they welcome Indiana to Hibner Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 27. Action is slated for 1:05 p.m. (CT) and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.

Huskers fall to Washington, 2-0

CHADRON, Neb. – Four interceptions on four consecutive passes for the Eagle defense, including two returned for touchdowns, kickstarted a 24-point third quarter as the Chadron State football team put on a show for its homecoming crowd with a 55-13 win over Fort Lewis at Elliott Field at Don Beebe Stadium in Chadron.

The win propels the Eagles' 2024 record up to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the RMAC. Fort Lewis fell to 1-6 overall and 0-5 in RMAC play. In addition, Chadron State football improved its record on homecoming to 19-5 since the year 2000.

Safeties Dax Yeradi and Tucker Peterson each recorded pick-sixes as the Eagle defense overwhelmed the Grizzlies with four picks and 24 points in the span of five minutes of game time, turning a 24-0 halftime advantage into a 48-3 lead after three quarters.

Peterson also had a second interception, which he returned to the Fort Lewis seven-yard-line to set up a rushing score, while linebacker Xavier Harrell also came away with a pick.

Quarterback DJ Ralph threw for 157 yards while completing 12 of 21 attempts for a touchdown. Ralph also rushed for 44 net yards and a score on the ground, one of four rushing touchdowns for the Eagles on the day.

Jake Marschall had a pair of rushing touchdowns, from eight and three yards out, while freshman running back and Sargent, Nebraska native Quincey Ryker electrified the crowd in the second half with a 72-yard touchdown on his first college carry.

Both teams punted on their first possession of the game, but Chadron State found the end zone on their second. Ralph found Jamahd Monroe twice, once for 23 yards and once on a flea flicker deep down the middle for 42 yards, setting up a Ralph rushing touchdown from four yards out as the home team led 7-0 after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, a 12-yard Dax Yeradi punt return gave Chadron State possession at the Fort Lewis 24-yard line to start their drive. A Ralph scramble picked up a first down before Jake Marschall punched it in on third-and-goal for an eight-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

The Eagles' next drive stalled, but Wilson Yee nailed a 55-yard field goal to make it 17-0. The kick was Yee's second-longest of the season behind a 57-yarder he had earlier this year at Colorado Mesa.

Chadron State found paydirt again just before halftime, when Ralph found a wide-open Tommy Thomas in the end zone from eight yards out with 27 seconds left to give the Eagles a 24-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Fort Lewis got on the board early in the second half with a field goal, but midway through the third quarter came the avalanche. Fort Lewis, playing with a rotating cast of quarterbacks due to an injury to season-long start Stone Walker, began to press and Chadron State's ball-hawking secondary made play after play.

Yeradi sniffed out a screen pass, jumping the route and breaking away untouched for a 51-yard interception return TD to make it 31-3. It was Yeradi's third interception of the season, tying him for second in the RMAC in that category.

On FLC quarterback Jacob Morris's very next pass, Tucker Peterson stepped in front of a crossing route over the middle, catching it at the Skyhawks 45 and running it all the way down to the 7-yard-line before being caught from behind. Chadron State wasted little time cashing in, handing it to Jake Marschall twice, with the sophomore's second carry turning into a 3-yard touchdown run.

Lightning struck again, with Morris's very next pass intercepted by Xavier Harrell at the Fort Lewis 31. The Skyhawks defense held, with Yee kicking a 37-yard field goal to make it 41-3.

It seemed as though Petersen's opportunity for a pick-six had come and gone after being tackled in the red zone just four minutes before, but he would have a chance at redemption. Fort Lewis changed quarterbacks, but couldn't change the outcome, as Sam Jones's first pass found the arms of Peterson. This time, the sophomore safety would not be caught, running it back 30 yards for another Chadron State TD to make it 48-3.

Turnovers were a theme of the game. In addition to FLC's four interceptions, both teams lost one fumble each. Chadron State fumbled two more times in the fourth quarter, but were fortunate to recover both to keep the Eagles at just one turnover on the day.

Chadron State was able to empty the bench for much of the fourth quarter. Quarterbacks Miguel Larios and Kasey Jones saw garbage time action, with Jones making his collegiate debut.

Quincey Ryker, a true freshman running back out of Sargent, had a dream start to his college career with a 72-yard touchdown on his first carry to cap CSC's scoring, breaking one tackle and racing down the near sideline. Ryker finished with two carries for 80 yards.

Jamahd Monroe was CSC's leading receiver with four catches for 85 yards. Tommy Thomas also had four catches for 31 yards and a touchdown. Jake Marschall finished with 87 net rushing yards and two TD's on the ground.

Defensively, Reed Henkel led the Eagles with eight tackles while Liam Blaser had seven. Linebacker Logan O'Brien had a sack and 3.5 tackles for loss.

🏈 UPDATE: Week 8 Nebraska High School Football Scoreboard

Alliance High School will send two to the 2024 NSAA Cross County State Championships in Kearney. Trevor Zurn and&nbsp;Asher Saka have qualified for the state meet. Zurn placed 3rd and Saka placed 11th. Both runners will run on Friday, Oct. 25th at the Kearney County Club. The Class B race will begin around 11:00am (MT)/12:00pm (CT).

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp;– The&nbsp;Omaha Supernovas, Nebraska’s professional volleyball team and first Pro Volleyball Champions, set their sights on the&nbsp;Pro Volleyball Federation Draft&nbsp;which is to be held on Monday, November 25 starting at 11 a.m. CDT.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The PVF Draft will take place over five rounds with each team having one selection per round. However, the Supernovas are one of only two teams to have more than five selections as Omaha acquired San Diego’s second round pick last year in exchange for outside hitter Lindsey Vander Weide.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Supernovas will have four picks in the top 20 starting with the final pick of the first round at No. 8 overall. Omaha will follow up with two picks in the second round at No. 10 and No. 15 overall. The Supernovas will select third in the third round at No. 19, sixth in round four at No. 30 and fifth in round five at No. 37.&nbsp;

“The coaches and league officials thought it was important for us to hold the draft prior to the start of training camp,” noted&nbsp;Laura “Bird” Kuhn,&nbsp;head coach of the 2024 PVF Champion Omaha Supernovas. “The timing of our draft will allow college draftees the ability to focus their attention on the postseason, as well as potentially attend training camp and be positioned for success when they complete their collegiate season.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

PVF’s eighth and newest franchise, the Indy Ignite, was awarded the No. 1 overall pick before a lottery determined picks two through four. The remainder of the first round was set based on the 2024 postseason finish, which was won by the Supernovas in a straight-set sweep over the Grand Rapids Rise on May 18, 2024, at the&nbsp;CHI Health Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A separate lottery was used for every round two through five to set the draft order, which was held on October 15. The Supernovas, along with each team, will draft from local markets with real-time updates, plus video highlights of picks available after the draft’s conclusion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Nebraska men's gymnastics team will compete in three home meets at the Bob Devaney Sports Center while taking on some of the nation's best teams throughout the 2025 season, Head Coach Chuck Chmelka announced on Monday, Oct. 14.&nbsp;

The Huskers open their season in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the Rocky Mountain Open on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. (CT). Nebraska will compete against Air Force, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Rocky Mountain Mavericks, SoCal United and Stanford.&nbsp;

The Big Red begin Big Ten Conference action by traveling to Illinois to face the Fighting Illini on Friday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. (CT).

Nebraska will compete at home for the first time in 2025 when the Huskers welcome Greenville to the Devaney Center on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. (CT).&nbsp;

Individual Husker gymnasts will then have the opportunity to compete at the annual USA Gymnastics Winter Cup in Louisville, Ky., Feb. 21-23.&nbsp;

The Big Red return to team action Friday, Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. (CT), when the Huskers face Oklahoma and California in a tri-meet at Berkeley.&nbsp;

Nebraska returns home to clash with Ohio State at the Devaney Center on Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m. (CT), before continuing Big Ten action at Penn State on Saturday, March 15 at 3 p.m. (CT).&nbsp;

Nebraska returns to Devaney for its final regular-season meet against Michigan on Friday, March 21 at 6 p.m. (CT).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Postseason competition begins April 4, as the Huskers head to the 2025 Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Wolverines are also set to host the 2025 NCAA Championships in Ann Arbor on April 18-19.

Nebraska welcomes back 18 gymnasts including All-Americans Taylor Christopulos, Asher Cohen and Zac Tiderman, from the 2024 squad that claimed the Big Ten regular-season championship and a fourth-place finish at nationals. Huskers announce 2025 Men’s Gymnastics Schedule

Facing an early four-run deficit, the Red team used a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth inning to post a 7-5 win and grab a 2-1 lead in the Red-White Series on Monday afternoon at Hawks Field.

Red had seven runs on six hits and an error, while White totaled five runs on nine hits.

Gavin Blachowicz earned the win out of the bullpen, dealing 2.1 shutout innings with one hit, a strikeout and one walk. Luke Broderick collected the save after pitching the final 1.2 innings in shutout fashion. Will Walsh went three innings in the start, allowing four runs on eight hits with a pair of punchouts.

White’s Jackson Brockett took the loss after giving up six runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings of work. Pryce Bender surrendered a run on two hits in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, while J’Shawn Unger tossed one scoreless inning of relief.

Red’s Hayden Lewis went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Cayden Brumbaugh was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Riley Silva and Gabe Swansen tallied a hit and an RBI each, while Cael Frost added a hit.

Robby Bolin, Case Sanderson and Will Jesske led the White offense with two hits apiece. Dylan Carey, Max Buettenback and TJ Coats recorded one hit.

The White offense went to work early, plating three runs on four hits in the opening frame. Consecutive one-out singles from Bolin and Carey had runners on first and third, before Buettenback lined an RBI double into the left-center gap to bring home Bolin.

Carey trotted home on a passed ball, while Sanderson smacked an RBI to right field to score Buettenback and give the visiting team a 3-0 advantage in the first.

Sanderson ripped a two-out double down the right-field line and later came around to score on an RBI single from Jesske to build the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third.

Red overcame the four-run deficit with a seven-run outburst with five hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead with three innings to play. All seven runs were scored with two outs in the inning, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Cotton and an RBI double from Lewis that cut the deficit to 4-2.

With the bases loaded, Brumbaugh smacked the 1-1 pitch to right for a bases-clearing three-RBI double that gave Red its first lead of the afternoon. RBI singles from Silva and Swansen grew the lead to three for the Red team in the bottom of the fourth.

A leadoff walk to Rhett Stokes began the seventh, while Stokes later scored when Carey lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left field to bring the White squad within a pair of runs in the final inning.

Broderick struck out the next batter to preserve the 7-5 win for the Red team.

The Red-White Series continues tomorrow afternoon at 3:05 p.m. at Hawks Field.

Seven-Run outburst leads Red to 7-5 win in game three

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State volleyball won the first set for the second time in as many nights but had no answer for their opponent after that, as Regis University defeated the Eagles in four sets Saturday night at the Chicoine Center – 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16. 

Chadron State (4-12, 0-6 RMAC) has now lost two in a row after a two-game win streak last week. Regis improved to 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the RMAC. 

Bella Adams had a team-high seven kills and hit .250 for the match. Aiyana Fujiyama had five kills, no errors, a .500 hitting percentage and seven blocks, including a solo block. 

Regis, who won the RMAC Tournament last season, got better as the match went along. The Rangers hit .000 in the first set with 10 kills and 10 errors, but hit .143, .222 and .243 over the next three sets to hit .159 for the match. Chadron State hit .077. 

Service errors plagued the Eagles, as Chadron State had 13 on the match compared to five aces. Regis also committed 10 service errors but made up for it with 11 aces. 

In the first set, Regis jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Chadron State took control with a 7-0 scoring run. A service error allowed the Eagles to side out before an Alondra Hernandez ace made it 5-3. Back-to-back blocks by the tandem of Fujiyama and Natali Keni tied the score at 5-5, an attack error gave CSC the lead, and another Hernandez ace followed by a Fujiyama kill opened up an 8-5 Eagles advantage and led to a Regis timeout.

Chadron rallied some, with a Kirkwood kill and an attack error trimming the deficit to 12-8, but Regis answered again with three points in a row and didn't lead by less than five for the rest of the set. The Rangers had an even better start to the third set, getting back-to-back aces early to lead 3-0 and eventually leading by margins of 10-2 and 18-7. Chadron State's best run in the set came while the Eagles were facing set point. Down 24-13, the Eagles saved five set points in a row, including two kills from Bo French, before Regis stopped the run with a block to win 25-18. In the fourth, Chadron State took an early 4-2 lead before another 6-0 Regis run, as the visitors took advantage of two attack errors and a ball handling error with another ace mixed in. A kill from Mataya Ward made it 20-13 Rangers, but Regis crushed the rest of the way, getting four kills and an ace for their final five points while Chadron only mustered three points on Regis service errors, as the set ended 25-16. Chadron State will be on the road for more RMAC matches next weekend, as the Eagles will face CSU Pueblo (10-6, 4-2 RMAC) on Friday and Adams State (4-13, 1-5 RMAC) on Saturday. The Eagles' next home match is the following Tuesday, October 22, against nationally-ranked Colorado Mesa (13-3, 5-1 RMAC). <h2>UCCS Pulls Reverse-Sweep on CSC Friday</h2>CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State volleyball jumped out to a two-sets-to-none lead, but couldn't hold it, losing to a comeback effort from the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in a five-set match at the Chicoine Center, as the Mountain Lions prevailed over the Eagles 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-9.The loss drops the Eagles to 4-11 overall and 0-5 in RMAC play. It also snaps a two-game win streak for Chadron State after two nonconference wins last week over South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State.Freshman Mataya Ward of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, finished with a career-high and team-high 12 kills in the losing effort. Aiyana Fujiyama also had double-digit kills, with 10, and hit .400 for the match. Alondra Hernandez tied a season-high with 32 digs.The Eagles hit .161 as a team, with 55 kills and 25 attack errors. UCCS hit .207, with 62 kills and 22 attack errors. Both teams had nine service aces apiece while the Mountain Lions finished with nine total blocks compared to Chadron State's six.Chadron State started strong, with four of the six blocks for the match coming in the first set. CSC got out to leads of 3-0, 7-2 and 11-4, with a Kendyl Kirkwood kill opening up the seven-point advantage. Two kills from Bella Adams and a kill from Ward in a four-point span made it 22-16 Eagles, before a UCCS service error closed out the set, 25-21.UCCS opened the second set with an ace, but Chadron State used a 4-0 scoring run to take a 5-2 lead, punctuated by a combo block from Adams and Natali Keni. Trailing 19-16, the Eagles roared back with a kill from Alejandra Briseno followed by a Briseno ace.After a UCCS point, the Eagles got a Kendyl Kirkwood set to Kally Kirkwood kill followed by a Mountain Lions ball handling error to tie the score 20-20. At 21-21, Chadron State took the set by winning each of the final four points courtesy of UCCS attack errors, including a block by Ward and Fujiyama.In set three, UCCS jumped out to an early lead, and while Chadron State battled back to tie the score on four occasions, the Eagles never led in the set. Chadron State saved three set points to turn a 24-18 deficit into a 24-21 deficit, including a crazy rally where Hernandez made a dig with the top of her head on the way to CSC winning the point, but the Mountain Lions responded with a kill out of a timeout to take the third.Offenses ruled the fourth set, as UCCS hit .366 while the Eagles hit .275. Chadron State had a 22-20 lead and were three points away from a match win, but UCCS went on a 5-0 run to steal the set, notching back-to-back aces to seal it.In the decisive fifth set, the Eagles unfortunately could not get out of their own way, recording five kills compared to six attack errors for a -.038 hitting percentage in the set. Chadron State briefly led 2-0, but UCCS had two separate 4-0 runs to take a 9-5 lead and earned their final six points of the match on two CSC service errors and four attack errors.Chadron State will hit the court again Saturday night at the Chicoine Center against Regis University, the defending RMAC Tournament champions. The Rangers (8-7, 4-1 RMAC) defeated Colorado Christian in four sets Friday night. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
