For all of its success across multiple sports, Nebraska has the dubious distinction of being the only Power Five program to have never won a game in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

The Cornhuskers earned a No. 8 seed in the South Region on Sunday and will get their chance to break through on Friday against No. 9 Texas A&amp;M in Memphis. It will be Nebraska's first appearance since 2014 and eighth overall.

“We’ve had a lot of firsts this year with this team and we’re chasing another one,” coach Fred Hoiberg said. “It's an opportunity to go out and do something that's never been done in the history of the program.”

The Huskers (23-10) have their most wins since Danny Nee’s 1990-91 team went 26-8. The turnaround has happened under Hoiberg, who was on the hottest of hot seats two years ago after going 24-67 in his first three seasons.

Keisei Tominaga, nicknamed the “Japanese Stephen Curry” and the team's leading scorer,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-basketball-nebraska-cornhuskers-illinois-fighting-illini-mens-indiana-hoosiers-f1577e284d7d095aedb1dc3cc29484ad">arrived last year</a>&nbsp;and has become the most recognizable player. His joyful displays when he makes 3-pointers makes him the biggest personality on a team with no projected NBA draft picks.

Three midmajor transfers joined the program in the offseason and are in the starting lineup: Brice Williams (Charlotte), Rienk Mast (Bradley) and Josiah Allick (New Mexico). Juwan Gary provides spark on both ends of the floor and is the only player with NCAA Tournament experience, with Alabama in 2022.

The team still plays Hoiberg's entertaining five-out motion offense. An increased emphasis on defense has been a biggest factor in their improvement.

Hoiberg, who took Iowa State to four straight NCAA Tournaments from 2012-15, said he watched the selection show by himself while his players gathered in a separate room.

“Everybody was downstairs hooting and hollering and I was up in my room by myself,” he said. “I'll be honest, I got a little emotional with it, with where we are right now, being back at this time of year. It's what it's all about. It's why we came to Nebraska.”

Cornhuskers, winless in NCAA Tournament, will get a chance to end their March Madness misery

Nebraska schools—in alphabetical order—Alliance, Chadron, Gering, Hay Springs, Hemingford and Scottsbluff—all had athletes win events and place high Saturday during the Chadron State College High School Indoor Track and Field Meet, but they had to share the spotlight with some exceptional South Dakota athletes. 

              The latter are Custer Wildcats Ciana Stiefel and Robbie Emery, who set meet records in both pole vaults, and members of the O’Neill family from Bennett County High at Martin—none of them more than freshmen—who won seven events and placed high in several others.  More about that later.

              Alliance was led by its middle distance runners.  Macey Seebohm repeated as the meet’s 800-meter winner and also anchored the Bulldogs’ first place 800-meter sprint relay team.  in the boys’ competition, Mario Rodriguez won the 400 and Trevor Zurn was the 800 winner.  In addition, Jonah Amill was the runner-up in the triple jump and placed fourth in the long jump.

              Chadron’s pacesetters included Quinn Bailey, who won the 200-meter dash, which had 52 contestants, and was second in the 60 sprint. The Lady Cardinals’ Kyndall Carnahan repeated as the 1600-meter champion, Jentsyn Fuller won the 3200 and Demi Ferguson, Grace Pyle, Cali Hendrickson and Alex Rasmussen made up the winning 4x400 meter relay team. Each of the relay members also finished among the top four in an open race, and another Lady Cardinal, Beau Behrens, was second to Seebohm in the 800. 

              Gering’s winners included Bo Gable, who nipped Bailey in the 60, was the runner-up to the Chadron all-star in the 200.  Gering also won both of the boys’ relays while in the girls’ action Rylee Luce won the 200 and Aubrey Anderson, one of three high jumpers to clear 5-feet, was awarded first place because she had fewer misses. 

              Hay Springs’ Gage Mintken won both the long and triple jumps and Parker Wellnitz cruised to victory in the 3200.

              Hemingford’s Theron Miller won the shotput with a mark of 51 feet, 9 inches while Scottsbluff’s Ryan Hinman, last year’s shot put winner at the CSC meet, threw more than three feet farther this year, but had to settle for second.

              Scottsbluff’s only winner this year was senior Hans Bastron, who won the race for the third year in a row after placing second as a freshman. This year’s time of 4:53.17 is the best of the three. Another Bearcat, Daniel Young, matched Mintken’s best mark in the long jump, but the Hay Springs senior had a better second-best leap to take the top spot. 

              The Lady Bearcats’ Paige Horne won the 60-meter hurdles at last year’s CSC Indoor Meet, but was second Saturday to Reagan O’Neill, a Bennett County 8th grader who also won the 60-meter dash and the long jump to lead her family’s impressive showing Saturday.

              Reagan’s long jump of 18-4 ½ Saturday set the Bennett County Schools’ record and would have placed third at the recent Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Meet.  

              Reagan’s 7th grade sister, Peyson, also had an outstanding day, placing in four events. She won the 400 meters, was second to her sister in the 60 and placed third behind only Reagan and Horne in the 60 hurdles and was the runner-up in the high jump after she was one of the three who cleared five feet and the placings had to be decided who had the fewest misses.

The girls’ older brother, Rush, a freshman, also fared well. He won both the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump with a leap of six feet.  In addition, a first cousin to the O’Neills, Harley Harris, a Bennett County 8th grader, won the girls’ triple jump.

Custer stole the show in the pole vault.  In the morning, junior Ciana Stiefel, who at last year’s CSC Indoor Meet cleared 12 feet to tie the record set by Meagan Bauer of Gering in 2004, went 12-2 to claim the record solely for herself.  She also set South Dakota’s Class A record at last year’s state meet by going 12-8. 

Her younger sister, 7th grader Tenley Stiefel, was the runner-up Saturday at 10 feet, which Custer coach Peter Johncour said may be the state record for that grade. 

In the afternoon when the boys vaulted, Custer senior Robbie Emery cleared 14-6 to break the meet record of 14-even set by Lucas Rosenbaum of Sidney in 2014.  It also is the Custer school record.

Another winner Saturday was Harper Bouche of Southeast High at Yoder, Wyo. She won the girls’ shot put with a heave of 39-1 ½. Chadron’s Olivia Lyon was the runner-up.

MINNEAPOLIS&nbsp;- The No. 3 seed Nebraska men's basketball team fell to No. 2 seed Illinois, 98-87, in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Saturday afternoon at the Target Center.&nbsp;

The Huskers (23-10) held a 15-point lead just after halftime, but Illinois (25-8) rallied past the Huskers on the strength of 26 points in the paint and 59.4 percent shooting after the break.&nbsp;

Brice Williams led the Huskers with 23 points. Keisei Tominaga chipped in 18 points, and Rienk Mast scored 15 points.&nbsp;

Both teams shot exactly 32-of-69 (46.4 percent) from the field. But the 13th-ranked Fighting Illini went 13-of-35 (37.1 percent) from 3-point range, while the Huskers hit just 8-of-27 (29.6 percent).&nbsp;

Terrence Shannon Jr. had a career-high 40 points to lead Illinois, a Big Ten Tournament record.

Nebraska will await the NCAA Tournament Selection Show at 5 p.m. (CT) on Sunday on CBS.&nbsp;

NU got off to a promising start, as Mast hit 3-of-4 from 3-point land early in the first half and scored 13 of NU's first 18 points as the Huskers built a 22-14 lead at the under-12 media timeout. Mast sparked a 7-0 run with a 3 that was followed by layups by Lawrence and Hoiberg.&nbsp;

Illinois cut it to 24-21 after seven points by Terrence Shannon Jr., but Jamarques Lawrence and Tominaga answered with buckets, and Tominaga's first 3-pointer of the game made it 31-23 Big Red with 9:07 left in the first half.&nbsp;

Illinois pulled back within four, but a four-point play by Lawrence and a triple by Williams gave the Huskers a 38-27 lead, and a Sam Hoiberg layup and free throw by Lawrence increased the lead to 13 at 43-30.&nbsp;

Despite Mast and Josiah Allick sitting on the bench with two fouls for the final 6:27 of the first half, the Huskers went into the break up 51-40, the third straight game the Huskers have scored at least 50 points in the first half.&nbsp;

The Huskers went up 55-40 after Williams and Tominaga scored out of the break, but Illinois went on a 13-2 run to cut it to 57-53 at the 13:27 mark. A 3-pointer from the corner by Luke Goode tied the game at 68-68, and after two free throws by Mast, Goode banked in another three for a 71-70 Illinois lead, its first since 10-8 at the 16:00 mark of the first half.&nbsp;

Back-to-back layups by the Illini put them ahead 75-70 with 7:20 to play. Illinois increased its lead to 82-73 with 5:30 left and never let the Huskers get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Lawrence finished with nine points, while Hoiberg and Juwan Gary each had seven. Allick had six points and seven rebounds.&nbsp;

Nebraska Notes-Nebraska took a 51-40 lead into the locker room, marking the third straight game Nebraska scored at least 50 points in the first half. The Huskers had scored 50 in both of their past two wins against Michigan and Indiana. The 51 points tied Nebraska’s season high in the first half (also vs. Lindenwood and at Indiana).-Today’s game was the fifth time overall this season Nebraska has scored 50 in the first half and it tied Nebraska’s highest scoring first half against a conference opponent since joining the Big Ten in 2011-12.-Junior forward Rienk Mast scored 15 points, including 13 in the first half. It marks the 20th double-figure scoring game of the season for Mast.&nbsp;-Mast connected on three 3-pointers in the game marking his fifth game of the season with at least three 3-pointers and first since making four at Illinois on Feb. 4.&nbsp;-Brice Williams scored 23 points, marking his 24th double-figure scoring effort of the 2023-24 season and fourth 20-point performance.

OMAHA, NE. —&nbsp;In a battle for first-place standing in the Pro Volleyball Federation, the&nbsp;Omaha Supernovas&nbsp;fell to the Atlanta Vibe in four sets (20-25, 25-15, 21-25, 12-25) Thursday night at the CHI Health Center in front of 8,114.

Nia Reed&nbsp;entered the match late in the first set and led the team with nine kills and a .421 hitting percentage. She added five digs and an ace to her effort. Team captain&nbsp;Brooke Nuneviller&nbsp;added nine kills of her own while collecting 12 digs, one block and one ace.

Middle blocker&nbsp;Tori Dixon&nbsp;swatted down six kills to go along with three blocks. Fellow middle&nbsp;Hristina Vuchkova&nbsp;continues to climb up the league leaderboard in blocks with five against the Vibe on Thursday. She also contributed five kills.

Sydney Hilley&nbsp;paced Omaha with 23 assists.&nbsp;Natalia Valentín-Anderson&nbsp;added five, and&nbsp;Kendall White&nbsp;recorded four. White led the Supernovas with 13 digs.

The Vibe (8-3) held the Supernovas (7-4) to a .129 hitting percentage while posting a .236 clip of their own. Anna Lazareva led the Vibe with 18 kills and recorded a .233 hitting percentage. Supernovas stumble against Vibe in First-Place bout

The Nebraska men's basketball team heads to Minneapolis, Minn., this week for the 2024 TIAA Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament. The Huskers (22-9, 12-8 Big Ten) are the No. 3 seed in the event and have a double bye to Friday's quarterfinals at the Target Center.&nbsp; It will be carried on the Huskers Radio Network with Kent Pavelka and Jake Muhleisen on the call locally on KCOW, and will also be available on Huskers.com and the Huskers app.

The Huskers will face sixth-seeded Indiana, No. 11 seed Penn State or No. 14 seed Michigan depending on the results of the first two days of the tournament. Tipoff for Nebraska's Big Ten quarterfinal is slated for approximately 8 p.m. (central) or 25 minutes following the third quarterfinal game of the day. Friday's game will be carried on BTN and the Huskers Radio Network.

Nebraska comes into the Big Ten Tournament as winners of six of their last seven games following an 85-70 win over Michigan in the regular-season finale on March 10. Keisei Tominaga led four Huskers in double figures with 30 points, including five 3-pointers, and six rebounds in the win, as Nebraska shot a season-high 58 percent from the floor. For Tominaga, the senior guard also became the newest member of the 1,000-point club, as he now has 1,012 career points in three seasons.

Offensively, the Huskers are a balanced team that features four players who average double figures, and three others who average at least 6.6 points per game. That has helped Nebraska average 76.8 points per game, which is the program's highest average since the 1995-96 team averaged 80.2 ppg.

Nebraska has relied on its defense down the stretch, as NU has held six of its final seven opponents to 70 points or less.&nbsp; NU led the Big Ten in field goal defense in conference play (.416) and ranks 26th nationally in defensive efficiency by KenPom as of March 11.

Numbers to Know1993 - The last season before 2023-24 that Nebraska finished as high as third in the conference standings. That year, the Huskers tied for second in the Big Eight with an 8-6 mark.

9.4 - NU leads the Big Ten with 9.4 3-pointers per game as of March 11, an average which is on pace to challenge the single-season school record for 3-pointers per game (9.5/gm, 2001-02). The Huskers are 10-4 this season when hitting at least 10 3-pointers.

24 -Nebraska has won 24 straight games when out-rebounding its opponent dating back to Nov. 27, 2022, against Florida State. The Huskers are a perfect 15-0 this season when out-rebounding foes.

21- Nebraska has won its 21 games dating back to last season when holding an opponent to 70 points or less. This season, NU is 17-0 following the win over Michigan on March 10.

8 - Nebraska is one of eight teams in the country to have at least five 1,000-point scorers on its roster. The group includes Josiah Allick, Jarron Coleman, Rienk Mast, Keisei Tominaga and Brice Williams. St. John's with six is the only program with more 1,000-point scorers (six) on its roster.

.939 - C.J. &nbsp;Wilcher's free throw percentage this season, as he has hit 31 of 33 from the foul line. Wilcher was a perfect 23-of-23 in Big Ten play and has hit 28 straight free throws dating back to Nov. 9.

2 - Rienk Mast became only the second Husker in the last 25 years to post a 30-point, 10-rebound game with his performance against Ohio State on Jan. 24. He joined Aleks Maric, who accomplished the feat four times in his career from 2005 to 2008.

Worth Noting&nbsp;• Nebraska's 22 wins this season are the most by Nebraska since the 2017-18 campaign and ties for second on Husker single-season charts. The 2023-24 Huskers can move into sole possession of second place with a win in their Big Ten Tournament opener.&nbsp;

Four Huskers Honored by the Big Ten&nbsp;A quartet of Huskers were recognized for their efforts during the 2023-24 season, as the Big Ten Conference announced its annual awards Tuesday morning. &nbsp;Nebraska Head Coach Fred Hoiberg shared Big Ten Coach-of-the-Year honors, while Keisei Tominaga and Rienk Mast earned All-Big Ten recognition. Josiah Allick rounded out the honorees, as he was tabbed as Nebraska’s sportsmanship honoree.

It marks the first time in the Big Ten era that Nebraska had multiple players on the top-three teams of conference voting. The last time it occurred for the Huskers was in 1998-99 when Big 12 Player of the Year Venson Hamilton was a first-team honoree, while Cookie Belcher was a third-team selection.&nbsp;

Hoiberg shared the coach-of-the-year honors with Purdue’s Matt Painter, as the two tied in voting by both the media and coaches. Hoiberg guided the Huskers to 22 wins during the regular season, the second-highest total in school history, while the Huskers’ third-place finish in the Big Ten is the program’s best since joining the conference, and best by Nebraska since 1992-93. Hoiberg is the Huskers’ first Big Ten Coach of the Year since Tim Miles was tabbed by the conference coaches in 2014 and fifth NU head coach to earn conference accolades. The award marks the second time that Hoiberg has received a coach-of-the-year, as he was named Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year in 2012 with Kansas’ Bill Self.&nbsp;

Tominaga earned All-Big Ten recognition for the second straight season, as he was a second-team honoree from the coaches and a third-team selection from the media. &nbsp;An honorable-mention pick in 2023, he led Nebraska and ranked among the Big Ten leaders in scoring (15.1, 15th), 3-pointers per game (2.4, fifth) and field goal percentage (.467, ninth), while also shooting 91.7 percent from the line in Big Ten action. He recorded four of his six 20-point games during Big Ten action, including a 31-point effort at Illinois and a 30-point performance in the regular-season finale at Michigan.&nbsp;

Mast, a third-team honoree by the media and a honorable-mention choice by the media, picks up the third conference honor of his college career as he earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors in 2022 and 2023. &nbsp;This season, he averaged 11.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game in Big Ten action, ranking among the conference leaders in rebounding (11th), assists (13th), assist-to-turnover ratio (12th) and blocked shots (0.7, 22nd). He posted 11 double-figure efforts including a 34-point 10-rebound effort against Ohio State and 20 points and eight boards at Illinois. Three of Mast’s four 20-point games were in Big Ten action.&nbsp;

Allick is honored for his contributions on and off the court, as he is active in the Huskers’ Life Skills program and has been a leader for one of the most successful teams in program history.&nbsp; The Lincoln North Star product averaged 7.0 points on 59 percent shooting and 4.8 rebounds per game in Big Ten action. He had five double-figure efforts in conference play, highlighted by a 16-point effort against Michigan on Feb. 17 and his first double-double of the season against Rutgers with 10 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. &nbsp;

The last time it occurred for the Huskers was in 1998-99 when Big 12 Player of the Year Venson Hamilton was a first-team honoree, while Cookie Belcher was a third-team selection.&nbsp;Hoiberg shared the coach-of-the-year honors with Purdue’s Matt Painter, as the two tied in voting by both the media and coaches. Hoiberg guided the Huskers to 22 wins during the regular season, the second-highest total in school history, while the Huskers’ third-place finish in the Big Ten is the program’s best since joining the conference, and best by Nebraska since 1992-93. Hoiberg is the Huskers’ first Big Ten Coach of the Year since Tim Miles was tabbed by the conference coaches in 2014 and fifth NU head coach to earn conference accolades. The award marks the second time that Hoiberg has received a coach-of-the-year, as he was named Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year in 2012 with Kansas’ Bill Self.&nbsp;Tominaga earned All-Big Ten recognition for the second straight season, as he was a second-team honoree from the coaches and a third-team selection from the media. &nbsp;An honorable-mention pick in 2023, he led Nebraska and ranked among the Big Ten leaders in scoring (15.1, 15th), 3-pointers per game (2.4, fifth) and field goal percentage (.467, ninth), while also shooting 91.7 percent from the line in Big Ten action. He recorded four of his six 20-point games during Big Ten action, including a 31-point effort at Illinois and a 30-point performance in the regular-season finale at Michigan.&nbsp;Mast, a third-team honoree by the media and a honorable-mention choice by the media, picks up the third conference honor of his college career as he earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors in 2022 and 2023. &nbsp;This season, he averaged 11.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game in Big Ten action, ranking among the conference leaders in rebounding (11th), assists (13th), assist-to-turnover ratio (12th) and blocked shots (0.7, 22nd). He posted 11 double-figure efforts including a 34-point 10-rebound effort against Ohio State and 20 points and eight boards at Illinois. Three of Mast’s four 20-point games were in Big Ten action.&nbsp;Allick is honored for his contributions on and off the court, as he is active in the Huskers’ Life Skills program and has been a leader for one of the most successful teams in program history.&nbsp; The Lincoln North Star product averaged 7.0 points on 59 percent shooting and 4.8 rebounds per game in Big Ten action. He had five double-figure efforts in conference play, highlighted by a 16-point effort against Michigan on Feb. 17 and his first double-double of the season against Rutgers with 10 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. &nbsp;

Western All Conference Basketball Selections for 23-24

University of Nebraska Interim President Chris Kabourek&nbsp;announced Thursday that he has appointed Dennis Leblanc, executive associate AD for academics, to serve as interim athletic director.

Leblanc has been with Husker Athletics for more than 40 years, having joined in 1983 as a member of the track and field staff. He has served in his current role since 2015. Under his leadership, Nebraska has achieved a record-high 95 percent Graduation Success Rate, ranking Nebraska second among 110 public FBS schools. Nebraska student-athletes’ cumulative 3.370 GPA last spring was the highest ever recorded. Nearly 4,000 Husker student-athletes have earned their degrees during Leblanc’s tenure.

“Dennis loves Nebraska, he cares deeply about the young women and men in our program, and he has a proven record of supporting their academic success,” Kabourek said. “Dennis and I are completely aligned on our vision for Nebraska to compete at the highest levels on the field, on the court and in the classroom. He will provide exactly the steady hand and trusted voice that we need during this interim period. I am so grateful to Dennis and Coreen for answering this call to serve and I know Husker Athletics will be in exceptionally capable hands under his leadership.”

Leblanc said: “I’m honored and grateful that President Kabourek has entrusted me with this role. He has an exciting vision for excellence at our University and I will do everything I can to help move that vision forward.

Kabourek said he is initiating a national search for a permanent AD. He said he has no predetermined timeline for selecting the right person to lead Husker Athletics forward.

Holst comments on the Alliance boys basketball season

Nebraska wrapped up its midweek action in Wichita with a 9-3 loss at Wichita State on Wednesday night at Eck Stadium.

Nebraska (10-5) totaled three runs on five hits and committed two errors, while Wichita State (10-6) recorded nine runs, 10 hits and an error.

Clay Bradford was 1-for-2 with a solo homer and a walk, and Max Buettenback had a pinch-hit inside-the-park home run in the ninth inning. Joshua Overbeek had a double in his first appearance since opening weekend, while Cole Evans drove in one of Nebraska’s three runs.Ryan Harrahill dropped to 0-1 on the season after giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits in one inning. The freshman issued one walk and struck out a pair of batters while making his collegiate debut. Caleb Clark came on in relief of Harrahill, surrendering five runs on three hits and two walks across two outs.A six-man committee comprised of Bobby Olsen, Grant Cleavinger, Kyle Froehlich, Jalen Worthley, Rans Sanders and Mason McConnaughey combined to allow just three hits in 6.1 scoreless innings of relief.Brumbaugh led off the game with a double into the alley in left-center, but Nebraska couldn’t grab the lead in the opening frame after the next three Huskers were retired in order.Wichita State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first after plating four runs on four hits and an NU error. A two-out RBI single through the left side broke the scoreless tie, while a two-RBI triple down the right-field line grew the lead to three. A throwing error on a play at first base tacked on the Shockers’ final run in the inning.A two-out grand slam highlighted a five-run second inning to give Wichita State a 9-0 lead through two.Brumbaugh reached on a one-out walk in the sixth, followed by Overbeek’s double down the left-field line to place runners on second and third. The Huskers plated their first run of the night on Evans’ RBI groundout to second, scoring Brumbaugh.&nbsp;&nbsp;A pair of back-to-back solo homers in the ninth for the Huskers made it a 9-3 game. Bradford drilled a 1-1 pitch off the batter’s eye in center, followed by Buettenback’s pinch-hit inside-the-park homer down the left-field line. Buettenback’s inside-the-park homer is Nebraska’s first since Joe Acker vs. Rutgers in 2021.Nebraska begins an eight-game homestand with a three-game series this weekend with Nicholls on Friday-Sunday, March 15-17 at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. First pitch of Friday’s series opener between the Huskers and Colonels is set for 6:05 p.m.
