LAREDO, Tex. – Trey Ballard scored a CSC career-high 15 points, Trey Harris added 12 and the Chadron State Eagles defeated Texas A&amp;M International 72-68 on Friday night from the TAMIU Convocation Center. 

The win is the first at Chadron State and in Division II for head coach Chris Francis, as the Eagles move to 1-0 on the season. Texas A&amp;M International, which got its season underway last weekend, falls to 1-3. 

It's an early statement win for the Eagles, who were picked 15th and last in the RMAC Preseason Poll but have now defeated a regional opponent in the Dustdevils, who were projected to finish sixth in the 16-team Lone Star Conference. 

The Eagles trailed by one point at halftime, as the game featured six ties and three lead changes, with all lead changes coming in the second half. Chadron State took the lead for good with 3:25 to play, outscoring the Dustdevils 11-4 over the final four minutes of game time to pull out the win. 

Chadron State shot 45.5 percent from the field (25-55), 21.4 percent from three (3-14) and 86.4 percent from the line (19-22). TAMIU lost despite a better shooting night, making 45.8 percent of their field goals and 33.3 percent of threes. However, the Dustdevils made just 18 of 30 free-throw attempts. 

The Eagles dominated the glass, collecting 36 rebounds to TAMIU's 19. Zy Wright led CSC with nine rebounds while Ballard grabbed five and Harris and Darrius Miles had four apiece. The Eagles also had 38 points in the paint compared to the hosts' 30. 

Chadron State gave minutes to 11 players over the course of the game, with nine players receiving 15 minutes or more and no player recording over 30 minutes. Ballard led the Eagles with 28 minutes played despite coming off the bench. 

Texas A&amp;M International immediately jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Eagles were undettered. Trey Harris, a transfer from New Mexico Junior College, hit a three-pointer for CSC's first points of the 2024-25 season. Later in the first half, Harris recorded back-to-back layups to tie the score at 18-18. 

The Dustdevils led by as many as seven on multiple occasions with under five minutes to go in the first half, but the Eagles closed to within one by the break. A 7-0 run with a Ballard layup, Zy Wright layup and Wright three-pointer tied the score at 27-27 with 2:36 left in the first half. 

The teams traded baskets to get to 31-31 before TAMIU made 1 of 2 free throws with seven seconds left in the half to take a one-point, 32-31 lead to the locker room. 

Chadron State took the lead for the first time in the entire game with 6:59 left to play in the game. Trailing 55-51, the Eagles got a 2-for-2 trip to the line out of Darrius Miles and a 1-for-2 trip out of Wright before Ballard forced a steal and converted a fastbreak layup at the other end to make it 56-55. 

The Dustdevils answered with a 6-0 run to take a 61-56 lead, but again, the Eagles countered by getting to the line and converted. Jalen Thomas went 2-for-2 and Treyson Neff went 3-for-3 from the stripe to cut the lead to 64-61. 

Jaylen Davis converted a layup, then got a steal on the Dustdevils ensuing possession, feeding John Jenkins on the fastbreak for a 65-64 Eagles advantage. CSC made enough plays down the stretch, including a sequence where the Dustdevils missed both free throws and the Eagles immediately followed with a dunk out of an inbounds play. 

For Texas A&amp;M International, Anthony Ignowski scored 24 points in the loss, shooting 8-for-10 from the field and 6-for-11 from the line.

The Eagles will stay in the Lone Star State for a game Saturday evening against Texas A&amp;M-Kingsville. Tip-off against the Javelinas is set for 5 p.m. Mountain time.

🏀MBB: Chadron State wins Coach Francis' debut at Texas A&M International

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State volleyball took on Black Hills State Friday night in a match which ended in the Eagles earning a reverse sweep in five sets over the Yellow Jackets. The scores were 21-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-16, and 15-10.

The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for Chadron State. The Eagles totaled 65 kills and 93 digs to outpower the Yellow Jackets with their 55 kills and 75 digs. 

For the Eagles, Kally Kirkwood and Mataya Ward led with 20 kills each while Alondra Hernandez recorded 27 digs and five service aces. Setter Kendyl Kirkwood had 40 assists in the match for CSC while Natali Keni, Bella Adams and Kally Kirkwood all had three blocks apiece.

The Yellow Jackets were led in kills by Carsyn Mettler with 18 and Abigail Renner with 17. Mettler led the Yellow Jackets with a .333 hitting percentage and only had two attack errors. Ellie Thomas led the Yellow Jackets with 21 digs.

In the first set, the Eagles came out strong with two kills from Mataya Ward and a kill from Kally Kirkwood to take a lead 3-1. The Yellow Jackets came back to eventually tie the game at three points each, but the Eagles were determined to take back the lead and won three straight points with a kill by Bella Adams, an attack error, and a block by Kally Kirkwood making the score 6-3. 

The Yellow Jackets eventually took back the lead later in the set with an attack error by the Eagles, a service ace by Carson Mettler, and a kill by Sydnie Tuioti-Mariner making the score 18-15. With the score tied at 21, the Yellow Jackets took the last four points with an attack error from the Eagles, a service ace by Abigail Renner, and two kills by Carsyn Mettler to seal the first set 25-21.

At the beginning of the second set, the Yellow Jackets took the lead 4-1 with two errors from the Eagles and a service ace from Abigail Renner. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of multiple attack errors from the Eagles and led 11-5 before an Eagles timeout. 

After the timeout, Kally Kirkwood came back with a big kill but the Yellow Jackets answered with another three straight points to make the score 14-6. The Yellow Jackets took the set 25-17 after two more attack errors from the Eagles. Chadron State finished the second set with 10 kills and 12 attack errors.

The Yellow Jackets got off to a lead of 3-1 in the third set, but the Eagles tied it with two kills from Mataya Ward. Within the third set, there were a total of 12 ties and five lead changes. The Eagles took their biggest lead of 12-8 with a 5-0 scoring run with kills from Kally Kirkwood and Mataya Ward, a service ace from Kiera Alfred, an attack error from the Yellow Jackets and another Ward kill. 

The Yellow Jackets battled back to take a two-point advantage with a score of 23-21, but the Eagles rallied to win the next four points and the set with two kills from Natali Keni, one kill from Fujiyama, and a ball-handling error from the Yellow Jackets. The final score was 25-23.

The battle continued into the fourth set. The Yellow Jackets led 3-2 early, but the Eagles took the lead and never gave it back. Three kills from Kally Kirkwood and an attack error from Black Hills made the score 6-3. The biggest momentum boost for the Eagles came when they won eight straight points, consisting of three service aces from Alondra Hernandez, four kills from Ward, and one kill from Kendyl Kirkwood to turn a 7-6 lead into a 15-6 lead. The Yellow Jackets closed the gap to a six-point deficit at 18-12, but that wouldn't be enough and the Eagles clinched the fourth set with a final score of 25-16.

In the deciding set, the Yellow Jackets took the lead 3-1 with a kill from Mettler, a service ace from Renner, and an error from CSC. Aiyana Fujiyama came up big for the Eagles to tie the game at four with a kill and CSC took the lead with an attack error from Black Hills. The Eagles continued their attacks by stacking on a pair of kills by Ward to give CSC the lead 8-5. The Eagles kept taking advantage of Yellow Jacket errors and completed the win with major kills from Natali Keni and Kally Kirkwood to win the final set 15-10 and clinch the match.

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;The Heartland Havoc Wrestling Tournament is set to take place November 9-10 at the Sandhills Global Event Center in Lincoln, bringing together 395 wrestlers so far from Nebraska and surrounding states, including Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota, for individual and dual competition. Individual competition will be held on Saturday, with duals taking place on Sunday.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – CSU Pueblo defeated Chadron State for the second time this season in a neutral site "competition pod" nonconference volleyball match held in Rapid City. The ThunderWolves prevailed over the Eagles 25-18, 25-23, 25-16. 

Despite the loss, sophomore Kally Kirkwood had a terrific match for the Eagles, smashing home 10 kills on 23 attempts with just one attack error to hit .391 for the match, her third-highest hitting percentage of the season. She also added a solo block. 

Also for CSC, Mataya Ward had eight kills while leading the Eagles with 26 attempts and hitting .115 while Aiyana Fujiyama had six kills and a block while hitting .214. Alondra Hernandez continued to pile up the digs, tallying 19 to average 6.33 per set, a pace above her league-leading average of 4.92 per set. 

The loss, which does not count in the RMAC standings, drops CSC to 4-18 overall this season. The win improves CSU Pueblo to 13-8.

The Eagles are currently 0-10 in RMAC play but face the two teams directly above them in the standings – Black Hills State (5-16, 1-9) and New Mexico Highlands (5-17, 2-8) – in two of their final four conference matches of the year. 

In Friday's match, the ThunderWolves had 48 kills and 10 attack errors, hitting .342 for the match. The Pack also added seven service aces. Chadron State had 29 kills with 15 errors, hitting .144 on the evening. Chadron State did edge out the ThunderWolves at the net, tallying four blocks to CSU Pueblo's three. 

CSU Pueblo got off to a fast start immediately, leading 8-1 in the first set after a service ace and 11-2 after back-to-back kills. Chadron State made things competitive, taking advantage of a service error, Mataya Ward kill and attack error to pull within 13-9, but the ThunderWolves regained momentum and won the first set 25-18 despite Chadron winning four of the set's final six points. 

The second set started with a similar script. The ThunderWolves led 10-5 early, but Chadron State used a 4-0 scoring run with a service error, Bella Adams kill and two attack errors to climb within a point at 10-9. The Eagles used another 5-0 run, featuring kills from Kally Kirkwood and Aiyana Fujiyama and capped by a Rylee Ward ace, to take a 15-12 lead. 

CSU Pueblo was able to close, however, coming up with some big kills to turn the tide of the set. Although Chadron State led 20-18, the ThunderWolves earned their final seven points of the set via the kill, outscoring CSC 7-3 down the stretch to win the second set, 25-23. 

In set three, the Pack once again jumped out to a lead, and though the Eagles stayed within striking distance, they never led in the set. The teams were tied 2-2 early, but CSU Pueblo scored the next four points to lead 6-2 and later built a 9-4 cushion. The Eagles pulled within three on a Rylee Ward kill to make it 11-8, but the ThunderWolves were able to accumulate points and build their lead to the final margin of 25-16.

🏐Eagles lose eighth straight in three sets to CSU-P

CHADRON, Neb.. – South Dakota Mines held the ball for 43 minutes and ran 79 plays compared to Chadron State's 43 while slipping past the Eagles 24-17 Saturday afternoon in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football game in Chadron. The victory gave the Hardrockers possession of the Eagle-Rock Trophy for the second time in three years.

The Eagles fall to 3-6 on the season, with a 2-5 record in the RMAC. They now have four RMAC losses this season by a touchdown or less. South Dakota Mines improved to 4-5, 3-4 in the RMAC.

On their first possession, the Hardrockers used half of the first quarter while driving 78 yards in 15 plays and scoring on Dawson Dunbar's three-yard run. The Eagles' Wilson Yee kicked a 49-yard field goal late in the first period and South Dakota Mines kicker Connor Taylor booted a 32-yarder late in the second quarter to make it 10-3 in favor of the Hardrockers at halftime. Both placekickers also made all of their extra point attempts.

Chadron State tied the score at 10-10 with less than three minutes gone in the third frame when redshirt freshman Liam Blaser blocked a Mines punt and CSC senior Brodie Roden took it 26 yards to the end zone.

The third quarter proved fateful as the Hardrockers cashed in on two turnovers to go ahead 24-10. Initially, Mines' defensive tackle Caleb Franklin intercepted a pass at the Chadron State 32. Quarterback Jake Martinelli immediately connected with tight end Henry Dryden on an 18-yard pass and three plays later running back Holden Gilbert went three yards up the middle for the touchdown.

On the second play of the Eagles' ensuing possession, wide receiver Jamahd Monroe made a beautiful reception of a 47-yard pass thrown by quarterback Miguel Larios. However, on the next play, Larios was sacked by linebacker Charlie Johnson and also lost the ball, which was recovered by the Hardrockers' Jarin Allen at Mines' 43-yard line. 

Larios was designated the Eagles' starting quarterback shortly before the game when it was determined that starter DJ Ralph, who had performed well the previous four games, could not play because of a recurring shoulder injury. Larios completed 11 of 22 passes for 181 yards. 

Bolstered by a 22-yard run by Orlando Westbook-Sanchez and a 12-yard pass from Martinelli to Colton Grover, Mines scored on Dunbar's five-yard burst on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Eagles closed the gap to 24-17 with 10:32 left in the final period by gaining 54 yards on two passes. Larios hooked up with Monroe on a 39-yard shot and Tommy Thomas took a quick slant 15 yards to the end zone. CSC had two more possessions, but were unable to sustain them.

For the game, Thomas caught eight passes for 76 yards while Monroe's two grabs covered 86 yards to serve as CSC's leading receivers. Jake Marschall had 14 carries for 48 yards, but the Eagles finished with only 35 yards net rushing. 

For South Dakota Mines, Martinelli completed 13 of 20 passes for 92 yards. Dryden was his top target with four catches for 46 yards. Gilbert carried 22 times for 89 yards and Dunbar, the former Chadron High School standout, 16 times for 61 yards. 

The two punters, Brodie Eisenbraun for Chadron State and Taylor for Mines, each averaged more than 43 yards on five punts, not counting Taylor's blocked attempt. Taylor had a 66-yarder and Eisenbraun booted a 58-yarder. 

Another telling comparison was the Hardrockers' 10 of 20 on third down conversions compared to the Eagles' one of nine. With the Hardrockers running so many plays, the Eagles made lots of tackles. Defensive end William Stemler led with 10, while Xavier Harrell, Omar Ali, Dax Yeradi, and Hunter O'Connor each had eight. Charlie Johnson paced South Dakota Mines with seven besides forcing the fumble that led to a touchdown.

SALT LAKE CITY – With three of the four sets as close as can be, Chadron State volleyball came up short in a four-set RMAC match against Westminster Saturday afternoon in Utah, with the host Griffins defeating the Eagles 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19. 

Alejandra Briseno had 14 kills to lead the Eagles, with Mataya Ward also in double digits with 10. Kendyl Kirkwood had a season-high 40 assists from the setter position.

The loss drops Chadron State to 4-16 on the year. The Eagles are still searching for their first RMAC win, as they are 0-10 in conference play. Westminster improves to 9-10 and 5-6 in the RMAC. 

Chadron State trailed 7-2 early in the first set, but the Eagles used a 4-0 scoring run to pull within a point of the Griffins at 9-8. That would be a theme of the first set, however, as on no less than 11 occasions in set one alone, the Eagles won a point and trailed Westminster by one, yet Chadron State never tied it or took the lead. 

Westminster led 23-20, but Chadron State answered with back-to-back kills from Aiyana Fujiyama and Briseno to make it 23-22. Westminster won the next point to go up by two, but CSC saved the first set point courtesy of a Griffins service error to make it 24-23. Breegan Huntsman answered with a kill for Westminster, however, giving the first set to the hosts. 

With set two tied 6-6, the Eagles put together a 4-0 scoring run with a Griffins service error followed by an Avery Lacy service ace, a Briseno kill and a Fujiyama block to make it 10-6, Chadron State. The Eagles led by two or three points for the majority of the set until the Griffins won three points in a row to tie the set score at 22-22. 

The Eagles held their nerve, with a Bella Adams kill stopping the run to give CSC another lead. An attack error from Westminster put the Eagles up 24-23 before a block from Mataya Ward and Aiyana Fujiyama sealed the set for Chadron State. 

Westminster raced out to a 9-3 lead in the third set, but the Eagles chipped away. Three straight kills, first from Briseno then two straight from Adams, tied the score at 12-12. Westminster wrestled momentum back and took a 23-19 lead, but the Eagles instantly got back in the set with another 3-0 run, taking advantage of two Griffin errors and a bad set. Westminster recovered, however, two kills sandwiched around a service error were enough to win set three for the hosts, once again 25-23. 

Mataya Ward started the fourth set on fire, recording a solo block and a kill on the first two points to put Chadron State up 2-0. The two teams traded scoring runs throughout the set, but Westminster landed the decisive punch with an 8-1 scoring run that turned a 16-15 Eagles lead into a 23-17 advantage for the Griffins. 

Briseno recorded two more kills for CSC's final points, but Westminster went to Claire Cook, who finished with a game-high 16 kills, twice for the final two points needed as Westminster clinched the fourth set 25-19. 

Chadron State takes the court next week for the second of three matchups with South Dakota Mines on Thursday, October 31. Thursday's match, as well as the match against CSU Pueblo the next day, will be nonconference matches as part of the RMAC's "competition pod."

Chadron State drops to 0-10 in RMAC with razor-thin loss in Salt Lake City

SPEARFISH, S.D. – With both teams entering the game with 3-4 overall records and 2-3 marks in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, it was anticipated that the 80th football game between Chadron State and Black Hills State would be dramatic. It proved to be that and more, with Black Hills running back Cam Goods' 45-yard jaunt for a touchdown with 2:46 to play giving the Yellow Jackets a 21-18 victory over the Eagles Saturday evening in Spearfish. 

It was a heart-breaker for the Eagles. Led by quarterback DJ Ralph, who completed 33 of 47 passes for 408 yards, Chadron State had a chance on the game's final play to tie the score and send it into overtime, but their 43-yard field goal attempt missed. The loss was CSC's third loss by three or fewer points this fall.

Ralph's 408 yards were a season-high for the Chadron State quarterback. The Eagles passed the ball 47 times, with Ralph completing 33 of those attempts. Two Chadron State receivers went over 100 yards on the day, with Tommy Thomas catching 11 passes for 146 yards and Grant Swenson catching seven passes for 102. 

Trailing 14-7 at halftime, the Eagles scored 11 unanswered points and went ahead 18-14 after being awarded a safety when Black Hills State was called for intentional grounding on a pass thrown out of the end zone, but Chadron State was unable to hang on to the lead. 

For Black Hills State, Goods also scored the game's first touchdown on a one-yard plunge in the opening period to cap an 11-play, 60-yard drive. It saw Yellow Jackets quarterback Luke Duby complete four of five passes for 48 yards. Ryan Ewing added the extra point.

Chadron State tied the score at 7-7 with just under four minutes left in the second quarter with an eight-play, 88-yard march that was highlighted by Ralph's 50-yard pass to wide receiver Grant Swenson. Two plays later, Ralph hit tight end Peter Krohn with a six-yard toss for the touchdown. Wilson Yee kicked the extra point.

Black Hills regained the lead at 14-7 with 50 seconds left in the first half.  A 33-yard pass from Duby to Damien Boozer was the big gainer, carrying to the 12-yard line. Alternate quarterback Kade Weber then entered the game, ran the ball twice and scored from the five. Ewing again added the PAT.

An interception and 32-yard return by safety Dax Yeradi set up Chadron State's second touchdown with 10:48 left in the third quarter. An 18-yard pass to wide receiver Tommy Thomas was the big play before Ralph carried a keeper the final three yards. It was Yeradi's fourth interception of the season and also Ralph's fourth rushing touchdown of the year.

In a significant play, Jackets' defensive tackle Isaiah Morales blocked the extra point attempt, leaving the score 14-13 in favor of the hosts. That was one of four missed kicks on the day for the Eagles, who failed to convert two other times after lining up for field goals before the game's final play. The first was on the game's opening possession when problems with the snap and hold at the 47-yard line prevented the kick from being attempted. The second was in the second quarter when a 42-yard effort missed the mark.  

Kicker Wilson Yee did make a 35-yarder to give Chadron State its first lead of the game with 5:10 eft in the third period. A 22-yard pass from Ralph to running back Chase Nelson was the key play in the 61-yard drive. Early in the fourth, a punt from Brodie Eisenbraun pinned BHSU inside the 10-yard line, while Yellow Jackets personal foul and false start eventually backed the home team up to the two-yard line. On second down, Duby was pressured in the end zone and desperately got rid of the ball, leading to an intentional grounding call and a safety for Chadron State, pushing the score to 18-14.

The Eagles will host another long-time rival, South Dakota Mines, this coming Saturday at home at Elliott Field at Don Beebe Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.

It proved to be that and more, with Black Hills running back Cam Goods' 45-yard jaunt for a touchdown with 2:46 to play giving the Yellow Jackets a 21-18 victory over the Eagles Saturday evening in Spearfish. It was a heart-breaker for the Eagles. Led by quarterback DJ Ralph, who completed 33 of 47 passes for 408 yards, Chadron State had a chance on the game's final play to tie the score and send it into overtime, but their 43-yard field goal attempt missed. The loss was CSC's third loss by three or fewer points this fall.Ralph's 408 yards were a season-high for the Chadron State quarterback. The Eagles passed the ball 47 times, with Ralph completing 33 of those attempts. Two Chadron State receivers went over 100 yards on the day, with Tommy Thomas catching 11 passes for 146 yards and Grant Swenson catching seven passes for 102. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, the Eagles scored 11 unanswered points and went ahead 18-14 after being awarded a safety when Black Hills State was called for intentional grounding on a pass thrown out of the end zone, but Chadron State was unable to hang on to the lead. For Black Hills State, Goods also scored the game's first touchdown on a one-yard plunge in the opening period to cap an 11-play, 60-yard drive. It saw Yellow Jackets quarterback Luke Duby complete four of five passes for 48 yards. Ryan Ewing added the extra point.Chadron State tied the score at 7-7 with just under four minutes left in the second quarter with an eight-play, 88-yard march that was highlighted by Ralph's 50-yard pass to wide receiver Grant Swenson. Two plays later, Ralph hit tight end Peter Krohn with a six-yard toss for the touchdown. Wilson Yee kicked the extra point.Black Hills regained the lead at 14-7 with 50 seconds left in the first half. A 33-yard pass from Duby to Damien Boozer was the big gainer, carrying to the 12-yard line. Alternate quarterback Kade Weber then entered the game, ran the ball twice and scored from the five. Ewing again added the PAT.An interception and 32-yard return by safety Dax Yeradi set up Chadron State's second touchdown with 10:48 left in the third quarter. An 18-yard pass to wide receiver Tommy Thomas was the big play before Ralph carried a keeper the final three yards. It was Yeradi's fourth interception of the season and also Ralph's fourth rushing touchdown of the year.In a significant play, Jackets' defensive tackle Isaiah Morales blocked the extra point attempt, leaving the score 14-13 in favor of the hosts. That was one of four missed kicks on the day for the Eagles, who failed to convert two other times after lining up for field goals before the game's final play. The first was on the game's opening possession when problems with the snap and hold at the 47-yard line prevented the kick from being attempted. The second was in the second quarter when a 42-yard effort missed the mark. Kicker Wilson Yee did make a 35-yarder to give Chadron State its first lead of the game with 5:10 eft in the third period. A 22-yard pass from Ralph to running back Chase Nelson was the key play in the 61-yard drive. Early in the fourth, a punt from Brodie Eisenbraun pinned BHSU inside the 10-yard line, while Yellow Jackets personal foul and false start eventually backed the home team up to the two-yard line. &nbsp;The biggest 6-man football game of the season in the Panhandle will be played at Hay Springs at 7 p.m. Friday (Oct. 25) when the Arthur County Wolves visit for both teams’ final regular-season game.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Arthur is ranked second and Hay Springs fifth by the Lincoln Journal Star this week.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Both are 7-0 and have overwhelmed most of their opponents.&nbsp; Arthur’s closest game was on Sept 13 when the Wolves defeated the Southwest Roughriders, located at Bartley, 40-28. All of the other wins were by at least 34 points, the margin which the Wolves downed Sioux County.

Hay Springs’ closest game was the 28-14 win over Paxton in the season-opener on Aug. 30. The Hawks bested Potter-Dix by 35 points (88-53) in their second game and topped Cody-Kilgore by 33 (52-19) on Oct. 11.

All the other wins for both teams have been by at least 50 points.&nbsp; They’ve had four common opponents—Cody-Kilgore, Crawford, Minatare and Sioux County.&nbsp; Hay Springs downed them by a 266-49-point margin and Arthur won the four tilts by a 249-37 difference.

Hay Springs and Arthur met twice last year.&nbsp; The Wolves won the regular-season contest on Sept. 15 by an 80-7 score, but the Hawks won the Nov. 3 quarterfinals playoff game 58-47. Much of the difference was because Hay Springs standout Gage Mintken and a few of his teammates were injured and did not play in the first game.&nbsp; But they were going full-blast during the playoffs and Mintken was named Nebraska’s 6-Man Offensive Player of the Year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;After stopping Arthur, the Hawks also won their semifinals game over Parkview Christian of Lincoln 65-41, before being edged 21-20 in the 6-Man championship game versus Sumner-Eddyville-Miller when their extra point attempt was blocked.

Mintken is now on the Chadron State College football team and another all-stater, Jordyn Anderson, also graduated.&nbsp; The same is true of Arthur’s top guns from a year ago, Dane Pilakowski and Justin Wenzel.&nbsp; But both teams still have plenty of firepower or they wouldn’t have been so successful this fall.

The Hawks are averaging 314.6 yards a game rushing.&nbsp; The leading ball carrier is senior Dylan Raymer, who has rushed 59 times for 691 yards for an 11.7-yard average and has scored 13 touchdowns.&nbsp; Sophomore Tripp Buettner is next on the rushing list with 22 carries for 408 yards for an amazing 18.5-yard average and seven TDs.

The Hawks don’t pass a whole lot, but senior quarterback Dylan Young has completed 19 of 38 tosses for 473 yards and 11 TDs.&nbsp; He’s been intercepted once.&nbsp; His favorite receivers have been seniors Hunter McDonald, who has caught six passes for 180 yards, and Talan Smith, who has grabbed seven for 157 yards.&nbsp; Both have four TD receptions.

Arthur’s rushing leader is Grady Gorwell, who has carried 72 times for 653 yards (9.1 average) and 11 TDs. The Wolves also have a big back.&nbsp; Kegan Allen is 6-1, 225 pounds. He has run for 214 yards and is said to also be an outstanding kicker.&nbsp;

Arthur passes more than most 6-man teams. Senior quarterback Talar Storer has completed 54 of 89 passes for 916 yards and 16 scores. He has thrown just two picks.&nbsp; He’s also rushed for 224 yards and four TDs.&nbsp; The team’s leading receiver is Tucker Rut, who has caught 20 passes for 326 yards and seven TDs.

There’s a third undefeated 6-man team in the Panhandle.&nbsp; That’s the Garden County Eagles at Oshkosh.&nbsp; They’ve also blasted all of their opponents, including Potter-Dix 78-12 and Leyton 83-49 their last two games. Strangely, neither Hay Springs nor Arthur, which is located only 60 miles via paved highways, from Oshkosh, was on the Garden County schedule this fall.&nbsp;

The Eagles are seventh in the Lincoln newspaper’s top 10.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After being nipped by Gering 23-20, the Cardinals are 7-1. They dropped just one place to fifth in the Lincoln Journal Star’s rankings, while Sidney remains third with its 8-0 mark.&nbsp; Any time two top five teams meet, it’s a significant contest.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The significance includes power points, playoff seedings and home field advantages. The Cardinals are “on the bubble” after its setback, but because Gering is a Class B team with a winning record, all will not be down the drain even if Sidney continues its winning ways.

Coached by Ryan Smith, once a Chadron State College defensive back, the Raiders’ closest game was the 22-13 win over Cozad in the season-opener.&nbsp; They also topped Minden 20-6 the next week, before blanking both Holdrege and Mitchell 42-0.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Next up, Sidney defeated Gothenburg 21-10, followed by a 46-0 shutout of Ogallala, and victories over Chase County and Alliance 35-12 and 48-14 the past two weeks.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Cardinals have disposed of each of the common rivals by similar margins.&nbsp; The Red Birds had defeated all of their opponents by at least 16 points (22-6 vs. Gothenburg) through the first seven games.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cards’ coach Michael Sandstrom has great respect for Sidney’s team.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; “They are an excellent and well-coached team,” he said. “I am most impressed with their overall team speed at every level. They are good both against the run and the pass. Therefore, we have been challenged to come up with some schemes to be successful.”

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Raiders’ quarterback is junior Alek Doty, brother of last year’s Class C-1 all-state quarterback Isak Doty. Alek has completed 90 of 137 passes (65.7%) for 1,683 yards and 22 touchdowns.&nbsp; He’s been picked off just three times, and also has carried the ball 105 times for 635 yards and 10 TDs to lead the team in rushing.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Aside from Doty, the leading rusher is senior Owen Gillham with 103 totes for 578 yards and two TDs. Last fall, he was the team’s leading tackler with 90 after the Raiders ended the season with a 10-2 record following a 20-0 loss to Wahoo in the C-1 semifinals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Another all-star is senior Landon Riddle, who has caught 37 passes for 823 yards and eight touchdowns this season. A year ago, he finished with 37 receptions, but with 150 fewer yards than his current total. One of his catches in 2023 was a 59-yarder for a TD against the Cardinals during the Raiders’ 40-21 victory.&nbsp; Riddle also led the Panhandle’s 11-man teams with six interceptions last fall.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Entering Friday night’s game, Sidney has picked off 11 passes this fall.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Among the linemen, fans will undoubtedly notice is Austin Christensen, who is 6-4, 320 pounds, and is “difficult to move,” according to Sidney Sun-Telegraph sports editor Mike Motz.&nbsp; Imagine that!

The Nebraska women's basketball team opens the 2024-25 season at No. 23 in the USA Today/WBCA Top 25 released on Thursday, Oct. 24. The Huskers were also ranked No. 23 in the preseason AP Poll (Oct. 15).

Nebraska is coming off a trip to the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament and an appearance in the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game. The Huskers are one of six Big Ten Conference teams ranked in the USA Today/WBCA Top 25, joining No. 3 USC, No. 6 UCLA, No. 14 Ohio State, No. 18 Maryland and No. 24 Indiana. Iowa, Illinois and Michigan were other Big Ten teams receiving votes.

Defending national champion South Carolina earned the No. 1 spot in the poll, while UConn starts the season at No. 2.

Last season, Nebraska finished No. 25 in the final NCAA NET rankings.

Huskers Ranked No. 23 in WBCA Preseason Top 25

The Nebraska swim and dive team will take on Iowa State in the Big Red's annual Pink Out dual meet at the Devaney Natatorium on Friday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. (CT).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Huskers plan to get back on the winning track against the Cyclones after dropping a 170-130 decision at Iowa (Oct. 18).

Against the Hawkeyes, Husker All-American Gena Jorgensen captured three individual titles, while Abby Baxter captured the victory on the one-meter board.&nbsp;

Jorgenson, a junior from Aberdeen, S.D., swam her way to wins in both the 1,000 freestyle (10:06.98) and 500 free (4:55.64). She added another victory in the 200 backstroke (4:55.64).&nbsp;

Newcomer Maisie Gilford stood out for the Huskers, contributing a pair of individual runner-up finishes in the 50 freestyle (23.98) and 100 free (52.16). The junior from England also was a part of two second-place relays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Maia Hall, a senior from Whitby, England, contributed second-place finishes in the 100 (1:03.62) and 200 (2:17.57) breaststrokes. Hall also added a third-place performance in the 200 IM (2:07.39). &nbsp;

In the diving well the Huskers had a strong all-around showing. Baxter scored 305.10 to take the title on the one-meter board. Kelsey Clairmont finished fifth. On the three-meter, sophomore&nbsp;Antonina Harned&nbsp;earned a runner-up finish (315.53), while Baxter took third and&nbsp;Nettie Knapton&nbsp;finished fifth. &nbsp;
