The No. 4 Nebraska wrestling team (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) returns home to host Wyoming (3-3, 1-2 Big 12) and No. 25 Northern Iowa (1-3), 0-0 Big 12) in a triangular on Saturday, Jan. 6. Action is slated to begin with Wyoming and Northern Iowa facing off at 12 p.m. (CT), before the Huskers meet the Cowboys at 1:30 p.m. (CT) and wrestle the Panthers at 3 p.m. (CT). When the Huskers face the Cowboys, four of 10 bouts will potentially feature matchups between ranked wrestlers. Against Northern Iowa, the Big Red could face ranked opponents in seven matches. Huskers welcome Cowboys, Panthers on Saturday 

Madison, Wis.&nbsp;- Natalie Potts scored all of her game-high 16 points in the second half, while Alexis Markowski produced her 30th career double-double to power Nebraska to a 69-57 Big Ten women's basketball road win at the Kohl Center on Thursday night.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 3-0 in the Big Ten for the first time since NU's first season in the conference (2011-12), while moving to 11-3 overall. Wisconsin slipped to 7-6 and 0-3 in the league.

Markowski, a 6-3 center from Lincoln, Neb., finished with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for her Big Ten-leading ninth double-double of the season. She put up 11 points and eight rebounds in the first half to help Nebraska a 14-point lead before taking a 38-27 edge to the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Potts scored Nebraska's first eight points but Wisconsin cut NU's lead to just 49-47 at the end of three quarters. Potts kept pushing in the fourth quarter, scoring eight more points. Her third field goal of the quarter pushed NU's lead to 61-53 with 1:35 left. She then scored her final points of the night at the free throw line to cap the scoring with about 20 seconds left to seal NU's eighth consecutive win in the series with the Badgers.

Leading 56-53, Potts pushed the margin to five points before Callin Hake scored to extend the lead to 59-53 with 5:07 left. Hake continued her strong play off the bench by finishing with eight points.

Darian White also made winning plays at both ends in the fourth quarter, scoring four of her six points, while Kendall Coley added six big first-half points to help the Huskers build their double-digit lead in the first 20 minutes. All 11 Huskers scored in the game, including five points, four rebounds and six assists from Jaz Shelley.

As a team, Nebraska hit 43.9 percent (25-57) of its shots from the field, including 9-of-27 (.333) three-pointers. The Huskers also won the turnover battle, 14-11. NU held Wisconsin to 36.1 percent (22-61) shooting for the game, including 7-of-33 threes (.212). UW won the war on the boards 38-36, including nine rebounds to go with 16 points from Serah Williams.

Ronnie Porter added 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Badgers, while Brooke Schramek contributed 12 points.

The Huskers will be back in action at home on Sunday to take on Big Ten unbeaten and No. 14 Indiana. Tip-off between Nebraska and the Hoosiers is set for 1 p.m., with a special pregame ceremony honoring All-American Jordan Hooper with the retirement of her No. 35 jersey beginning at approximately 12:40 p.m. (CT). Hemingford girls' basketball have had a difficult season so far in 2023-2024, but on Thursday night they got ever so close to their first win, building a first half lead over Garden County. However, Garden County rallied in the second half using a big 3rd quarter to edge the Bobcats 32-31.&nbsp;

Hemingford had a great first half, using a great defensive start to lead 12-5.&nbsp; The 2nd quarter was competitive, but Hemingford still held the 9-7 edge in points in the quarter to take the 21-12 halftime lead.

The Eagles stiffened on defense in the 3rd to outscore Hemingford 10-2 before a close 4th quarter where Garden County held the 10-8 points edge.&nbsp;

Hemingford girls basketball gives great effort, falls by one to Garden County

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will hunt for its second Big Ten road win when the Huskers travel to Wisconsin to battle the Badgers on Thursday night.

Tip-off between the Big Red (10-3, 2-0) and the Badgers (7-5, 0-2 Big Ten) at the Kohl Center in Madison is set for 8 p.m. (CT).

The game will be televised live by the Big Ten Network with Jason Ross Jr. and Christy Winters Scott calling the action. A live stream also will be available on the Fox Sports App.

Nebraska fans can listen across the Huskers Radio Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln and 590 AM in Omaha, the Huskers App and Huskers.com, as Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch team up for their 23rd season. Pregame starts at 7:30 p.m. (CT).&nbsp;

NCAA NET No. 27 Nebraska improved to 2-0 to open Big Ten play for the second straight season by posting an 87-81 win over 2023 NCAA Elite Eight qualifier Maryland on New Year’s Eve in Lincoln. It marked Nebraska’s first-ever home win over the Terrapins, but its second victory over the Terps in the past three meetings.

The Big Red got big contributions from their big three - Alexis Markowski, Jaz Shelley and Natalie Potts - against Maryland, as all three stars recorded double-doubles. It was the first time in nearly a decade that three Huskers posted double-doubles in the same game.

Alexis Markowski posted her Big Ten-leading eighth double-double of the year with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Maryland. The two-time Lisa Leslie Award candidate has scored in double figures in 13 straight games, including four 20-point performances. The preseason first-team All-Big Ten pick leads the league in rebounding (9.8) and ranks fifth in scoring (17.5 ppg). Through two Big Ten contests, she is averaging 16.5 points and a conference-best 13.5 rebounds.

Two-time Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award candidate Jaz Shelley has added 13.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and team bests of 5.2 assists and 1.5 steals after putting up 13 points and 11 assists in the win over Maryland. The 5-9 guard from Moe (pronounced MOE-ee), Australia, is the first Husker in history to record multiple career triple-doubles after getting 19 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in a win over UNCW (Dec. 5). Shelley ranks fourth on Nebraska’s career three-point list with 188 and ninth in career assists (433) despite playing just two-plus seasons as a Husker.

Three-time Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week Natalie Potts is leading all conference freshmen in scoring (11.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.2 rpg) after erupting for 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds against Maryland. The two-time Missouri MaxPreps High School Player of the Year out of Incarnate Word Academy put up 13 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and a block in the second half alone against the Terrapins. In Big Ten play, she is averaging 13.5 points (24th) and 9.0 boards (5th).&nbsp;

The Badgers carry a 7-5 overall record, but have stumbled to an 0-2 Big Ten start, including an 89-50 loss at Purdue (Dec. 30) and an 87-65 home loss to Iowa (Dec. 10). • Wisconsin is led by talented sophomore Serah Williams. The 6-4 post has averaged 16.1 points and ranks second in the Big Ten with 9.0 rebounds while adding a league-best 2.9 blocks. She has missed UW’s last two contests with illness. She is hopeful to return to the lineup against the Huskers.Without Williams at Purdue, the Badgers scored a season-low 50 points.The young Badger nucleus also features 5-4 sophomore guard Ronnie Porter, who is averaging 10.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and team bests of 4.1 assists and 2.8 steals. A returning starter, Schramek is the only Badger to start all 12 games this season alongside Ronnie Porter. Schramek was a high school teammate of Nebraska junior Kendall Moriarty at Benet Academy in Illinois.The Badgers add experience with senior guard Natalie Leuzinger (7.7 ppg, 2.9 rpg), who led UW with 15 points off then bench at Purdue. Huskers to Honor Hooper, 2014 Champions, Alumni on SundayThe Huskers will celebrate Alumni Day on Sunday, Jan. 7 when they take on Indiana at 1 p.m. Nebraska will honor the 10th anniversary of Nebraska’s Big Ten Tournament Championship team from 2014, while also recognizing the 2013 NCAA Sweet Sixteen team.&nbsp;The 2014 Huskers were led by first-team All-American and Big Ten Player of the Year Jordan Hooper, who will have her No. 35 jersey retired in a pregame ceremony. Bulldog's boys wrestling coach Nick Meyers has been pleased with how his team has performed so far this season, especially in dual matches, and feels Chadron will be a good test for his team on Thursday.

"Chadron is not going to give you anything, we have got to be prepared to wrestle a full match for the entire line-up and work hard for bonus points and work hard for each other," Meyers said.&nbsp;

Jackson Bailey has emerged as one of the top wrestlers at 126 pounds in Western Nebraska, as he has started out the year with some big wins including some 1st place finishes at invitationals. He says he respects Chadron, considering his cousin Quinn is a star on the team but also wants beat the Cardinals decisively.

"They're pretty good, I don't know if they have a 126, but I want to beat him, and beat them bad," Bailey said. "They beat us in football and shouldn't have, so I want to take it to them."

Bulldogs wrestling starts New Year with Chadron dual

Behind a season-high 28 points from Keisei Tominaga, Nebraska improved to 12-2 on the season with an 86-70 win over Indiana Wednesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.&nbsp;

Tominaga had 18 of his 28 in the second half, as Nebraska matched a season high with 12 3-pointers en route to its first win over Indiana since 2019. &nbsp;

He hit a season-high four 3-pointers, including three in the second half, as he fell two points shy of his career high in helping Nebraska build a 22-point lead before cruising to a 16-point win. The 12-2 start matches NU’s best 14-game start since 1990-91.&nbsp;

Tominaga was one of four Huskers in double figures, as Brice Williams added 15 points, six boards and four steals, while Jamarques Lawrence and C.J. Wilcher added 12 and 11 markers, respectively. &nbsp;Lawrence also set a career high with four steals.&nbsp;

The Huskers had 15 steals and forced Indiana (10-4, 2-1) into 19 turnovers, leading to 27 Husker points.&nbsp;

The Huskers trailed 9-4 in the opening minutes before running off seven straight points, including four from Brice Williams, who played just five minutes in the first half because of foul trouble.&nbsp;

The Huskers continued to build a lead behind the shooting of C.J Wilcher, who had eight straight Husker points as his third 3-pointer of the night gave NU a 30-21 lead with 7:22 left in the half. Wilcher had all 11 of his points in the first 20 minutes.&nbsp;

Nebraska eventually stretched to lead to 10 on a pair of occasions, the last being on a Keisei Tominaga free throw with 1:11 left in the half, as the senior guard had 10 first-half points.

Nebraska got off to a quick start as a Wiilliams 3-pointer and a Tominanga jumper stretched the lead to 13 and forced an Indiana timeout less than two minutes into the second half. &nbsp;

Indiana whittled to Husker lead to 55-47 after a 3-pointer from Makik Reneau with 13:12 left, but a 3-pointer from Williams and three free throws from Sam Hoiberg extended the margin back to 61-47 with 11:41 left.&nbsp;

The Hoosiers, who saw their three-game win streak snapped, was within 64-53 before Tominaga keyed a 9-0 run with six straight points before a Williams 3-pointer made it 73-54 with just under seven minutes remaining.

Kel’el Ware led Indiana with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Reneau added 14 points in the loss.&nbsp;

Nebraska (11-2, 1-1 Big Ten) comes off a 91-62 win over South Carolina State on Dec. 29. C.J. DENVER (AP) — Nathan MacKinnon scored a power-play goal 32 seconds into overtime, and the Colorado Avalanche rallied to beat the New York Islanders 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Scott Mayfield took a holding minor with 22 seconds left in regulation, giving Colorado a 4-on-3 power play to begin overtime. MacKinnon got the winner with a slapshot on a pass from Cale Makar, his 20th goal of the season. MacKinnon also had two assists and extended his home point streak to 20 games to begin the season, a franchise record.

“We put ourselves in some situations that we can’t continue to put ourselves in, but the effort was there,” New York coach Lane Lambert said.

Valeri Nichushkin had two goals, Jonathan Drouin had a goal and an assist, and Devon Toews had a goal against his former team. Makar had three assists and Alexandar Georgiev made 18 saves for Colorado.

“Our big guys were all good,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “I think they had three points each, Val had two goals.”

Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist and Ilya Sorokin had 23 saves in relief of Semyon Varlamov for the short-handed Islanders. Pierre Engvall, Alexander Romanov and Simon Holmstrom also scored for New York, which has lost eight of its last nine games in Denver.

“I thought we played a pretty good game,” Engvall said. “Obviously we’re not happy with the way the game ended but we did a lot of good things.”

Varlamov was one of two players the Islanders lost during the game. He left at 14:52 after making a save, his 11th of the night, and was replaced by Sorokin.

Varlamov, who did not dress for Friday’s win over Washington due to an undisclosed injury, was making his first start in a week and served as Sorokin’s backup in a 3-1 loss at Pittsburgh on Sunday night.

Defenseman Robert Bortuzzo went off after getting checked into the boards by Samuel Girard late in the second period. Bortuzzo got up but could not put weight on his right leg and was helped off the ice and into the locker room.

Lambert did not have an update on either player after the game. He said he did not know if Varlamov’s injury was related to the one that kept him out of Friday’s game.

Engvall and Nelson scored in the first period to give New York a 2-1 lead and the Islanders went ahead by two goals on Holmstrom’s goal just 1:09 into the second.

Nichushkin’s first of the night and Drouin’s goal 4:10 apart tied early in the second but Romanov put the Islanders ahead 4-3 when his shot from the point went off the skate of Avalanche defenseman Jack Johnson and through Georgiev’s pads at 10:18 of the second.

Nichushkin tied it with his 19th goal of the season at 12:21 of the third period.

“He’s a beast and it’s fun just to watch him play, he’s so big and powerful,” MacKinnon said of Nichushkin. “He definitely works his tail off. He deserves everything he’s getting.”

DENVER (AP) — Jarrett Stidham and Russell Wilson traded places Sunday, but many of the problems that Sean Payton complained about when he made the switch last week remain ingrained in the Denver Broncos' sputtering offensive operation.

Payton praised Stidham's poise and overall play in leading the Broncos (8-8) to their first sweep of the Los Angeles Chargers (5-11) since 2019 with a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chargers-broncos-score-stidham-314797b4626169b81c97e628c40c6197">grinding 16-9 win</a>&nbsp;Sunday in Denver.

“I thought it went pretty good,” Payton said after Stidham won his first NFL game by going 20 of 32 for 224 yards and a touchdown — thanks to&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/SNFonNBC/status/1741589190519762975">Lil'Jordan Humphrey eluding five tacklers</a>&nbsp;and gaining 40 yards after the catch on his spinning, sidestepping and ultimately diving 54-yard score — with no interceptions and two sacks.

Payton also had kind words for the man he benched, calling Wilson a true pro for the way he handled losing his starting job despite ranking sixth in the league with 26 TD passes.

“Russ has been fantastic this week,” Payton said. “Look, I think this idea that he and I, or we, don’t have a good relationship, or he’s not a fit, all of that stuff comes from people farther away from our program. You guys are close to it. I think the further away people are from the program, the more they just jump to a narrative. It is what it is, but he’s approached this week like we expected — like a pro.”

Payton confirmed Monday that Stidham will start the season finale Sunday in Las Vegas and that Wilson will dress as the backup, prepared to play if necessary. The Broncos are out to snap a seven-game skid against the Raiders (7-9) and halt a six-year run of losing records.

Payton wants to see more out of Stidham in the finale as he prepares to navigate quarterback options for 2024 when parting ways with Wilson would trigger massive, record-setting dead money charges over the next two years that would impact the team's roster building.

“No. 1, our job is to score,” Payton said. "We had opportunities in the tight red (zone) yesterday and certainly down at the 1-yard line. That’s the first thing. I thought Jarrett did a good job — after seeing the tape— with his decisions, the ball security, and all those things you want to see from that position. The big play to LJ (WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey) was a heck of a play by LJ and the protection was good. There were a lot of positives to build off.”

Humphrey stepped up with Courtland Sutton (concussion) and Marvin Mims Jr. (hamstring) inactive. His 54-yard catch-and-run was the Broncos' second-longest scoring play of the season.

Humphrey's TD aside, the offense lacks threats over the middle with the absences of WR Tim Patrick and TE Greg Dulcich. Patrick tore an Achilles tendon in training camp after missing all of 2022 with a torn ACL and Dulcich has only played in parts of two games because of recurring hamstring injuries that have sidelined him for 21 games in his two NFL seasons.

OLB Jonathon Cooper had a sack, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit Sunday. For the season, he has a team-high 8 1/2 sacks.

GM George Paton and team owner Greg Penner, who have been silent on Wilson's comments Friday that the Broncos threatened to bench him midseason if he didn't adjust the injury guarantee in the $245 million contract all parties signed 14 months earlier and which kicks in next season.

Payton said he felt good about the availability of RT Mike McGlinchey (ribs) for the finale but that S Delarrin Turner-Yell was heading to IR with a torn ACL.

12 — Games with double-digit tackles for ILB Alex Singleton, who had 11 stops Sunday, including seven solo. That ties him with Zach Thomas (2005) and Foyesade Oluokun (2021) for the most games in a season with double-digit tackles this century. Singleton's 162 tackles are eight shy of LB Michael Brooks' 1992 total, which is the most by a Denver defender in the past 32 years.

The Broncos visit Las Vegas on Sunday where they'll try to snap a seven-game losing streak to the Raiders and finish 4-2 in the division for the first time since 2015, the previous time they had a winning record against the AFC West.

The Nebraska men’s tennis team released its 2024 spring schedule, as the Huskers will host a double header on January 13 in Lincoln, Neb., to begin the season.

NU’s spring opener against North Dakota and Creighton, and all home matches, will be held at the Dillon Tennis Center. This spring season, the Huskers will compete in 25 dual matches, including nine matches against Big Ten conference opponents to close out the season.

In the fall, NU went 37-33 in singles play and 16-15 in doubles. Most notably from the fall, junior Calvin Mueller posted a 10-3 record en route to the Big Ten Individual Championship. Doubles duo Anton Shepp and Nic Wiedenhorn went 4-3 on the season, after making it to the semifinals match in the ITA Regionals Tournament. The pair was invited to ITA Nationals in California to close out fall play. Also finding success on the doubles court was duo Mueller and Leo Linquet, reaching a 3-1 record and placing second at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

From the 2022-23 season, Nebraska has seven returning letterwinners, including Rudi Christiansen, Roni Hietaranta, Lars Johann, Leo Linquet, Shunya Maruyama, Calvin Mueller and Nic Wiedenhorn. In the fall, NU welcomed four newcomers, transfers Anton Shepp, Nikolay Sysoev and Henry Bilicic, and freshman Colson Wells, for the 2023-24 season.

Huskers set 2024 spring schedule

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — C. J. Wilcher scored 18 points off the bench, Brice Williams added 16 points, and Nebraska rode a dominant first half to a 91-62 victory over South Carolina State on Friday night.

Nebraska's first half was one to remember. The Cornhuskers led 50-11 after holding South Carolina State to 11.9% shooting (5 for 42) and 1 for 13 from 3-point distance. In contrast, Nebraska shot 55.2% overall, which included 11-for-14 shooting on 2-point tries. The Cornhuskers had 13 assists on 16 made baskets.

Josiah Allick finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Nebraska (11-2). Eli Rice scored 10 points.

Jordan Simpson scored all of his team-high 17 points in the second half to help the Bulldogs outscore Nebraska 51-41 after the break.

Michael Teal finished with 11 points and Raquan Brown had 10 for the Bulldogs (4-11).

Nebraska's 11 nonconference wins are the most since the Cornhuskers went 11-1 to open the 1994-95 season. Only four teams in program history have had a better nonconference record than this season's 11-2.

Nebraska, which is 1-1 in Big Ten play, returns to conference action with a home game against Indiana on Wednesday.

DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic was perfect from the field and free throw line, finishing with 26 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists as the Denver Nuggets posted their highest point total of the season in a 142-105 win over the short-handed Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night.

Jokic was 11 for 11 from the field, hit his only 3-point try and went 3 for 3 from the line. The performance followed another near-perfect outing after he converted all 18 free throws Monday in a 120-114 win over Golden State.

It was the 116th regular-season triple-double of Jokic’s career, and that ranks fourth all-time in NBA history and 22 behind Magic Johnson for third place. Russell Westbrook tops the list with 198, and Oscar Robertson has 181 all-time

Jokic went to the bench Thursday after feeding Christian Braun for a dunk with 1:31 left in the third quarter and completing his 11th triple-double of the season.

“I’ve never seen a triple-double before I played with him and now I see them all the time,” said second-year player Peyton Watson, who scored a season-high 20 points while starting in place of Aaron Gordon.

Gordon is out with lacerations on his face and hands suffered from dog bites on Christmas.

Memphis played without Ja Morant, who was sidelined due to illness. Morant missed his first game since returning from a 25-game suspension at the start of the season. The Grizzlies had won all four games in which Morant has played since making his season debut Dec. 19 at New Orleans.

“Obviously they’re much different team with Ja Morant, so we caught a break with him being out tonight,” Denver coach Michael Malone said. “That team was playing great basketball. I was proud of our guys, once we learned about Ja not playing right before tip-off, our guys handled their business.”

Desmond Bane led Memphis with 23 points, and Marcus Smart scored 17. Memphis is 6-20 when Morant is out of the lineup.

“It’s never an excuse, one man down, next man up,” Grizzlies forward Ziaire Williams said. “They played really well, executed really well, we just missed some shots.”

Jamal Murray scored 20 or more points for the fourth straight game, finishing with 23 points and nine assists for Denver, which has won a season-best six in a row. Murray had 10 points in a high-scoring third quarter when the Nuggets’ lead rached 32 points, before the Grizzlies cut it to 23.

Denver outscored Memphis 41-35 in the period and led by as many 38 in the fourth.

The Grizzlies led by eight early, but a 16-0 Denver run spanning the first and second quarters gave the reigning champs a 15-point lead. Memphis closed within 45-41 midway through the second period before the Nuggets went on an 18-2 run for a 65-48 lead at halftime.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Suspended Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco failed to show up Thursday for a meeting with a prosecutor who is investigating him for an alleged relationship with a minor.

Prosecutor Olga Diná Llaverías said the investigation will continue regardless of Franco's no-show. She waited for the All-Star player and his lawyers at her office, but they didn't appear.

Dominican prosecutors and police showed up on Tuesday at a Franco property in Baní, his hometown about 60 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of Santo Domingo. They did not find the 22-year-old player to request he appear for testimony.

The Associated Press has not been able to verify the reported posts.Franco's no-show could be because his current lawyers may not have been summoned for the meeting. The AP had access to a document in which lawyers Luz Díaz Rodríguez, Rosalina Trueba, Cristian Cabrera and Manuel Rodríguez were dismissed by Franco.Franco was suspended by Major League Baseball in August as the investigation started in his country. He will be paid and receive service time while on administrative leave under an agreement with the players’ association. There is no set timetable for a decision on whether he will be disciplined by MLB.
