Eagles top triple digits in rout of Texas A&amp;M Kingsville Saturday night

The Chadron State College men's basketball team made 40 of its 81 field goal shots and had a 62-31 rebounding advantage while rolling past Texas A&amp;M-Kingsville 109-70 in a game played in Chadron on Saturday night.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Eagles led 57-40 at halftime and outscored Kingsville 52-30 in the second half.&nbsp; Five Chadron State players scored in double-figures, led by guard&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/bryce-latimer/9068">Bryce Latimer</a>&nbsp;with 25 points, 17 of them in the first half.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Eagles top triple digits in rout of Texas A&M Kingsville Saturday night

Led by some huge plays by its defense, the Chadron State College football team wrapped up its season Saturday afternoon by defeating South Dakota Mines 27-19 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest at Elliott Field in Chadron.  

              The outcome gives both teams 5-6 season records and a 4-5 RMAC marks.  It also allows the Eagles to regain the Eagle-Rock Trophy that the Hardrockers claimed last year for the first time in 8 games.  This year's game was the 73rd in the rivalry that dates back to 1912.  Chadron State has now won 53 of them    

              Both teams had problems with turnovers and neither posted impressive offensive numbers Saturday.  The Eagles turned two interceptions into touchdowns and the Hardrockers did that same with their lone pick.  Chadron State also fumbled a punt that resulted in one of Mines' two touchdowns. 

              Most of the fireworks happened in the second quarter.  

              Mines opened the scoring on a 22-yard field goal by Connor Taylor on the second play of the second period. It occurred after the Hardrockers had sacked Chadron State quarterback Mason Hamilton for a 20-yard loss and he also lost possession of the ball at his own 11-yard line.  To the credit of the CSC defenders, they were able to force the visitors to settle for a field goal.

              During the next 12 ½ minutes the Eagles scored three touchdown and the Hardrockers two. All but Chadron State's second TD were aided by gifts from the opponents.

              The Eagles were forced to punt on their first second-period possession, but Brodie Eisenbraun's 45-yard boomer went out of bounds at the Mines' two-yard line.  Three plays later, the pass thrown by Hardrockers' quarterback Jayden Johannsen's went directly into the midsection of CSC defensive tackle Kobe Whipple, who took about two steps into the end zone to get credit for three-yard interception return. 

              About four minutes later, the Eagles went 60 yards for their second touchdown. A 22-yard pass from Hamilton to Tommy Thomas launched the drive.  Two plays later Jeydon Cox carried a short pass 24 yards into the end zone, although he was scrambling to stay on his feet much of the way after nearly being tripped up by a Mines defender soon after he'd caught the ball.  As he neared the goal line, Cox finally gave up and somersaulted into the end zone. 

              The Eagles had some more good fortune prior to their third touchdown. Johannsen's pass was tipped near the line of scrimmage by two CSC defenders and finally grabbed by linebacker Joey Geil, who carried it 25 yards before he was shoved out of bounds at the Mines' 10. 

              A half the distance to the goal penalty was also called on the Hardrockers and on the next play Hamilton threw a short pass in the end zone to Thomas. Wilson Yee's extra point kicks made the score 21-3 with 6:36 left in the second frame.

              Before the first half ended, the turnover trend shifted in favor of the Hardrockers, not just once, but twice. The visitors were forced to punt, but the Eagles' muffed it and Mines' Jarin Allen claimed the ball at CSC 25.

              On the Eagles' ensuing possession, they were confronted with a third and long following a holding penalty.  Alternate quarterback Preston Pearson's pass was tipped and then caught by Mines' defensive lineman Caleb Franklin at the Eagles' 15. 

 Three plays later after the Eagles were called for pass interference, Johannsen hit tight end Henry Dryden in the back of the end zone for what officially was a two-yard TD pass.  Chadron State blocked the extra point attempt, making the halftime score 21-16.

              Although five touchdowns were scored in the second quarter, three field goals accounted for the only scoring in the second half. 

               Yee's 52-yard field goal that put the Eagles ahead 24-16 came late in the third period. Taylor answered with a 33-yard shot early in the fourth frame, making it a one possession game again.  

              Both teams were forced to punt on their next possessions, but the Eagles eventually drove 70 yards in 11 plays and took 5 ½ minutes off the clock. A 23-yard pass from Pearson to Thomas was the big gainer. Redshirt freshman Jake Marschall also had a 10-yard run up the middle for a crucial first down. 

              The drive finally died before reaching the end zone, but Yee kicked a 20-yard field goal with 1:13 left on the clock to give the Eagles' an eight-point advantage. 

              There were still lots of anxious moments for both teams.  Johanssen, who was playing in his fourth game against the Eagles, has definitely earned their respect.  He was sacked once by CSC all-star Hunter O'Conner and had passes broken up by Dax Yeradi and Sutton Pohlman,  but Johannsen also completed four passes in the next minute.  

Two of them went to Mason Galbreath for 18 and 14 yards, another to Will Lester for 13 and the fourth to Ben Noland for 11.  The latter gave the Hardrockers a first down at the CSC 26.  

              Johannsen launched two missiles in the remaining 10 seconds. The first barely sailed over Hoatson's head as he ran out of the back of the end zone after it and the last one was broken up in the southeast corner of the end zone by Sutton Pohlman. 

              Chadron State managed just 179 total net yards and Mines 230.   Both teams lost more than 25 yards on quarterback sacks.  Marschall was the Eagles' leading rusher with a tough 62 yards on 32 carries, while Jalen Frye led Mines with 39 on 13 rushes.  Johannsen completed 19 of 39 passes for 157 yards to go with his two TD passes and the two costly interceptions.  

              Hamilton, the Eagles' quarterback in the first half before he was injured while being sacked, connected on 11 of 18 passes and the TDs to Cox and Thomas.  He was not intercepted.

              Thomas caught four passes for 57 yards and Cox four for 34.  Noland grabbed nine passes for 68 yards to lead the Hardrockers.

              There were many busy tacklers.  Freshman Tucker Peterson at safety and linebacker Xavier Harrell with 10 apiece paced the Eagles. Logan O'Brien had eight, Geil seven and O'Conner six.

              For the Hardrockers, Hunter Newsom was credited with 11, Jacob Schwab nine, Nathan Krebuhler eight and Eli Bowman, Casey Knutsen and Franklin six apiece

The outcome gives both teams 5-6 season records and a 4-5 RMAC marks. It also allows the Eagles to regain the Eagle-Rock Trophy that the Hardrockers claimed last year for the first time in 8 games. This year's game was the 73rd in the rivalry that dates back to 1912. Chadron State has now won 53 of them Both teams had problems with turnovers and neither posted impressive offensive numbers Saturday. The Eagles turned two interceptions into touchdowns and the Hardrockers did that same with their lone pick. Chadron State also fumbled a punt that resulted in one of Mines' two touchdowns. Most of the fireworks happened in the second quarter. Mines opened the scoring on a 22-yard field goal by Connor Taylor on the second play of the second period. It occurred after the Hardrockers had sacked Chadron State quarterback Mason Hamilton for a 20-yard loss and he also lost possession of the ball at his own 11-yard line. To the credit of the CSC defenders, they were able to force the visitors to settle for a field goal. During the next 12 ½ minutes the Eagles scored three touchdown and the Hardrockers two. All but Chadron State's second TD were aided by gifts from the opponents. The Eagles were forced to punt on their first second-period possession, but Brodie Eisenbraun's 45-yard boomer went out of bounds at the Mines' two-yard line. Three plays later, the pass thrown by Hardrockers' quarterback Jayden Johannsen's went directly into the midsection of CSC defensive tackle Kobe Whipple, who took about two steps into the end zone to get credit for three-yard interception return. CSC wins defensive showdown over SD Mines, brings Eagle-Rock Trophy back to Chadron!

Travis Brewster's tenure as the women's basketball coach at Chadron State College got off to a fast start Friday night when his team defeated College of St. Mary from Omaha 88-64 in Chadron.  

              The Eagles' own fast start made much of the difference. They jumped out to a 27-13 first quarter lead and remained ahead all the way. They made 11 of 24 shots from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers, and had no turnovers in the period.

              Chadron State never outscored the Flames by more than four points in any of the three remaining quarters, but maintained at least a 14-point lead the entire contest.  All 12 players in the scorebook played at least five minutes and 11 of them scored.

              Standout forward Shay Powers led the Eales with 19 points and nine rebounds while alternates Molly Cockburn and Kylie Krise tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively. 

              Cockburn was on the CSC roster last year but seldom played and never scored a point. She made all nine of her shots in the Friday night's opener, while sinking four field goals and five free throws.  Krise transferred from Western Colorado during the summer and made four of her five field goal attempts, including a trio of 3-pointers. 

              Tia Murray, a 6-foot-1 junior, led the Flames in scoring with 20 points while sophomore Madison Camden added 17 points and freshman guard Madison Guzman finished with both 11 points and 11 rebounds.

              The Eagles played at a fast pace and employed a three-quarters court press the entire game.  Perhaps they were too aggressive some of the time. While they were 12 of 15 at the free throw line, St Mary was 28 of 42 at the charity stripe.  

              The Flames were called for just 11 fouls and the Eagles for 31. However, Chadron State out-rebounded the visitors 46-30 and took 76 shots from the field and the Flames only 42. 

              The Eagles will take a long bus ride Saturday, going over 1,200 miles to play Texas A&amp;M International in Laredo on Sunday afternoon.  They're next home game will be on Monday, Nov. 20 against York College.

Chadron State women begin Brewster era with win

Both Chadron State College basketball teams will open their seasons at home in the Chicoine Center on Friday night. 

 With good reason, there’s lots of interest in both teams. Fans are wondering if the men’s team can match or even improve upon last year’s success, while they also are anxious to see how the women’s team does with a new coach at the helm.

              The Lady Eagles, now guided by Travis Brewster, will tip off their season against College of St. Mary from Omaha at 5 o’clock Friday, followed by the men’s team coached by Shane Paben going against Texas A&amp;M International from Laredo. 

              The CSC men also will be at home again at 7 o’clock Saturday to play Texas A&amp;M-Kingsville.  Ironically, after spending most of Saturday in a bus headed south, the CSC women will be playing A&amp;M International in Laredo at 1 p.m. Sunday.

              Interest in the CSC men’s team perked up last year when the Eagles had their first winning season in 21 years while finishing 19-10 overall and going 16-7 in the RMAC.  While point guard and team captain Marcus Jefferson graduated and Isaiah Wyatt, who shot 47% from 3-point range, transferred, five of the remaining mainstays have returned and Coach Paben has brought in at least a half dozen newcomers who had been solid community college players.

              It’s the same strategy he used to remake last year’s team.

              The returnees include first-team all-RMAC choice Josh Robinson, second-team all-conference pick Bryce Latimer and Porter Anderson, the college’s 6-foot-7 Homecoming king who gives the Eagles a sturdy presence down low.  The trio combined to shoot 53.3% from the field and 78% from the free throw line last winter.

              Jarrett Taylor, who was the team’s second leading 3-point marksman a year ago and is someone Paben calls a full-fledged team player, is expected to be a starter again.  The coach added that alternate center Martin Poznanovic has improved.

              It will take some time to get acquainted with the newcomers.

              The Eagles won a pair of exhibition games the last weekend of October and players such as Jalen Patterson, who scored 37 points in the two games, along former Casper College standout Dalton Peterson and highly-regarded recruits such as Trey Ballard, Raul Nunez and Julio Phillips saw considerable action.

              Paben said he has high expectations for this year’s team. He said it has more “length,” a rather new term for height, and will have excellent depth.

              “I hope we’re better, but we’ll have to wait to find out for sure,” said Paben, who is in his fourth year with the Eagles.

              This will be the third year in a row that the CSC men have opened the season against the Texas teams and they have yet to beat either of them.  In 2021-22 when the games were in Chadron, International won 82-75 and Kingsville prevailed 84-74. Last year in Texas, the games were closer but the outcomes the same. The International Dustdevils won 71-66 and the Kingsville Javelinas won 82-76 in overtime.

              International, which finished with an 18-12 record last year, does not have any of its top five scorers back, but Matt Okoye, who scored 10 points in last year’s opener has returned along with John Achebe, who was a full-time starter a year ago.

              Kingsville was 21-12 in 2022-23. It returns 5-9 guard CJ Smith, who was the team’s top scorer for the season with an 11.2 average, along with 6-7 Kavon Booker, who averaged 6.8 points and a team-high 5.3 rebounds.

              The Javelinas will play at South Dakota Mines on Friday night before visiting the Eagles.

              Not much other than the name of the head coach will have changed on the game programs for the Chadron State women’s team this winter. When Travis Brewster was named the head coach last summer it was too late for him to add recruits.

              Since arriving, he’s not complained the situation, just dedicated himself to helping the 14 players he inherited improve.  He said he’s been pleased with their work ethic and willingness to absorb his strategies.

              Noting that individual players spend 95% of their time on the floor without the ball in their hands, he said team unity and finding ways to help one another have been points of emphasis. He calls it “small ball.”

              While the Lady Eagles won just four games last winter, the cupboard was not completely bare. In particular, he is pleased that one of CSC’s all-time greats is on the roster. Shay Powers, a 5-10 junior in eligibility, has scored 899 points and grabbed 395 rebounds during the last 2 ½ seasons.  That includes the 13 games the team played in 2020-21 during the COVID pandemic and did not count as a year of eligibility.

              Last winter, Powers, who has a knack for taking the ball to the basket and either make a field goal or draw a foul, shot a school-record 55% from the field while averaging 16.5 points and 6.9 rebounds.  She was among the 10 players who earned first-team all-RMAC honors, and just the third CSC coed to receive that honor this century.

              Brewster knows Powers will be target of special defenses and is striving to find ways to take advantage of that. He said the other starters will include junior Olivia Waufle, crowned the CSC Homecoming queen about a month ago, along with Allison Olsen, Kyra Tanabe and either Megan Counts or Liberty Line, all sophomores. 

              Both Olsen and Tanabe played about 26 minutes a game last year, while Waufle averaged about 16 minutes. Junior Kadyn Comer will also see considerable action in the backcourt, the coach noted.

              Injuries left over from last year have prevented 6-footer Claudia Dollinger and promising redshirt Bria Delmont from practicing so far, but it’s hoped they’ll be available by January.

              The Eagles have not played their Friday night opponent, College of St. Mary in Omaha, since joining the RMAC in 1990, but trail 13-4 in the all-time series. The Flames are an NAIA team and have already played three games—defeating Waldorf College of Iowa 67-63 and losing to York College 69-37 and to Peru State 84-46.  Their top player apparently is sophomore Sidney Anderson, who scored 78 points in the three games.

              Once the Eagles have arrived in Larado, they’ll encounter former teammate Samiyah Worrell, who played the last two years at CSC, graduated in May and is using her “COVID season” to play for Texas A&amp;M International.  She was Chadron State’s second-leading scorer behind Powers both seasons, averaging 11.8 and 10.1 points, respectively.

              Last year, after Worrell received honorable mention all-RMAC, former Coach Janet Raymer noted that Worrell “can take over a game.” She was the team’s leading 3-point shooter both seasons.  Last winter she was 39 of 143 (27.3%) from behind the arc.

              The Lady Dustdevils also have Rai Brown in their lineup. A year ago when International thumped the Eagles 73-46 in Chadron, Brown scored a game-high 22 points and averaged 19.2 for the season.

              Last weekend, International won all three games by wide margins while participating in a classic at Simon Fraser University in Canada. The Dustdevils defeated Alaska-Fairbanks 83-47, Central Washington 82-64 and Simon Frasier 82-75.  Brown scored 26 points against Central Washington.  Two other players tallied 20 and 25 points in the third game.  Worrall scored 11 points twice and 10 once.

Paben said he has high expectations for this year’s team. He said it has more “length,” a rather new term for height, and will have excellent depth. “I hope we’re better, but we’ll have to wait to find out for sure,” said Paben, who is in his fourth year with the Eagles. This will be the third year in a row that the CSC men have opened the season against the Texas teams and they have yet to beat either of them. In 2021-22 when the games were in Chadron, International won 82-75 and Kingsville prevailed 84-74. Last year in Texas, the games were closer but the outcomes the same. The International Dustdevils won 71-66 and the Kingsville Javelinas won 82-76 in overtime. International, which finished with an 18-12 record last year, does not have any of its top five scorers back, but Matt Okoye, who scored 10 points in last year’s opener has returned along with John Achebe, who was a full-time starter a year ago. Kingsville was 21-12 in 2022-23. It returns 5-9 guard CJ Smith, who was the team’s top scorer for the season with an 11.2 average, along with 6-7 Kavon Booker, who averaged 6.8 points and a team-high 5.3 rebounds. The Javelinas will play at South Dakota Mines on Friday night before visiting the Eagles. Not much other than the name of the head coach will have changed on the game programs for the Chadron State women’s team this winter. When Travis Brewster was named the head coach last summer it was too late for him to add recruits. Since arriving, he’s not complained the situation, just dedicated himself to helping the 14 players he inherited improve. He said he’s been pleased with their work ethic and willingness to absorb his strategies. Noting that individual players spend 95% of their time on the floor without the ball in their hands, he said team unity and finding ways to help one another have been points of emphasis. He calls it “small ball.” While the Lady Eagles won just four games last winter, the cupboard was not completely bare. In particular, he is pleased that one of CSC’s all-time greats is on the roster. Shay Powers, a 5-10 junior in eligibility, has scored 899 points and grabbed 395 rebounds during the last 2 ½ seasons. That includes the 13 games the team played in 2020-21 during the COVID pandemic and did not count as a year of eligibility. Last winter, Powers, who has a knack for taking the ball to the basket and either make a field goal or draw a foul, shot a school-record 55% from the field while averaging 16.5 points and 6.9 rebounds. She was among the 10 players who earned first-team all-RMAC honors, and just the third CSC coed to receive that honor this century. Brewster knows Powers will be target of special defenses and is striving to find ways to take advantage of that. He said the other starters will include junior Olivia Waufle, crowned the CSC Homecoming queen about a month ago, along with Allison Olsen, Kyra Tanabe and either Megan Counts or Liberty Line, all sophomores. Both Olsen and Tanabe played about 26 minutes a game last year, while Waufle averaged about 16 minutes. Junior Kadyn Comer will also see considerable action in the backcourt, the coach noted. Injuries left over from last year have prevented 6-footer Claudia Dollinger and promising redshirt Bria Delmont from practicing so far, but it’s hoped they’ll be available by January. The Eagles have not played their Friday night opponent, College of St. Mary in Omaha, since joining the RMAC in 1990, but trail 13-4 in the all-time series. The Flames are an NAIA team and have already played three games—defeating Waldorf College of Iowa 67-63 and losing to York College 69-37 and to Peru State 84-46. Their top player apparently is sophomore Sidney Anderson, who scored 78 points in the three games. Once the Eagles have arrived in Larado, they’ll encounter former teammate Samiyah Worrell, who played the last two years at CSC, graduated in May and is using her “COVID season” to play for Texas A&amp;M International. She was Chadron State’s second-leading scorer behind Powers both seasons, averaging 11.8 and 10.1 points, respectively. Last year, after Worrell received honorable mention all-RMAC, former Coach Janet Raymer noted that Worrell “can take over a game.” She was the team’s leading 3-point shooter both seasons. Last winter she was 39 of 143 (27.3%) from behind the arc. The Lady Dustdevils also have Rai Brown in their lineup. A year ago when International thumped the Eagles 73-46 in Chadron, Brown scored a game-high 22 points and averaged 19.2 for the season. Last weekend, International won all three games by wide margins while participating in a classic at Simon Fraser University in Canada. The Dustdevils defeated Alaska-Fairbanks 83-47, Central Washington 82-64 and Simon Frasier 82-75. Brown scored 26 points against Central Washington. Two other players tallied 20 and 25 points in the third game. Worrall scored 11 points twice and 10 once.

Eagles back on the basketball court for season opening games Friday

The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team won its 24th match in a row with a 3-1 (28-26, 24-26, 25-11, 25-20) win over Northwestern in front of 8,637 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Wednesday night.&nbsp;

Nebraska improved to 24-0 (15-0 Big Ten), its best start to a season since 2005 (28-0). Northwestern dropped to 11-14 (5-10 Big Ten).&nbsp;

The Huskers hit .278 and held the Wildcats to .143, including .087 over the final three sets. Nebraska had 13 blocks on the night, including seven by Bekka Allick, six by Andi Jackson and five by Bergen Reilly.&nbsp;

Merritt Beason and Harper Murray each had 13 kills to lead the Big Red. Allick tied her season high with 11 kills and hit .562, and Ally Batenhorst also had double-digit kills with 10. Jackson chipped in eight kills on .600 hitting.&nbsp;

Reilly finished with 45 assists and 12 digs for her third straight double-double. Lexi Rodriguez had 11 digs, while Beason had 10.&nbsp;

Laney Choboy served two of Nebraska's four aces in the match.&nbsp;

Set 1:&nbsp;The Huskers held a 5-3 lead before Northwestern scored a 6-2 run to go up 9-7. The Wildcats led 12-10 when a kill by Murray and Wildcat attacking error tied the score at 12-12. A kill by Jackson put the Big Red back on top, 15-14, but Northwestern scored four straight points to go up 20-17. The Wildcats led 22-19, but a kill by Allick and Northwestern hitting error got Nebraska within 22-21. Beason then smashed back-to-back kills to put the Huskers up 23-22. A Northwestern kill tied the score at 23-23, but Beason stepped up with another kill for set point, 24-23. Northwestern answered again, but Batenhorst posted a kill for another set point, 25-24. Once again, the Wildcats fought it off with a kill, and a Husker hitting error gave Northwestern set point, 26-25. Beason terminated from the back row to make it 26-26, and Allick and Murray teamed up for a block and another Husker set point, 27-26. This time, Murray finished off the set with a kill for a 28-26 win.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Set 2:&nbsp;The Huskers jumped out to a 10-4 lead with two kills by Allick and two by Beason. But Northwestern rallied from down 13-7 with five straight points to get within one, 13-12. After a Murray kill, the Wildcats got a kill and a block to tie the score at 14-14. Beason and Allick combined for a block and a 15-14 lead, but the Wildcats scored five of the next six points to go up 19-16. A service error by Northwestern was followed by two Wildcat hitting errors to tie the score at 19-19. Murray tallied two kills around two Northwestern hitting errors for a 23-20 Husker lead.&nbsp; But the Wildcats answered with two kills, an ace and a block to claim set point at 24-23. T.D Stein discusses first season as head coach of the Bulldogs

Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://cyclones.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/jordan-hopp/12433">Jordan Hopp</a>&nbsp;is hitting her stride, ranking among the best in the Big 12 in hitting percentage while being Iowa State's leading blocker this season, but it hasn't come easy.

Jordan came to Iowa State with just high school playing experience without playing for a club, a rarity for players at this level.

"When you haven't played club, it can be hard to catch up on all those reps and that's what Jordan was facing her first couple of years," Head Volleyball Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://cyclones.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/coaches/christy-johnson-lynch/1980">Christy Johnson-Lynch</a>&nbsp;said. "She was trying to catch up compared to other middles who came in who had so many more repetitions over the years."

Jordan grew up in Alliance, Nebraska, a town of about 7,500 in the Western part of the state. The nearest club team, where most recruits get recognition from college coaches, was either four hours away in Denver, Colorado or six hours away in Lincoln, Nebraska. Jordan knew she'd have to take an alternative route to get Division I attention as an under-the-radar recruit.

"Because of where I lived, there was no national club around so I decided to continue to play three sports in high school," Jordan said. "During the summertime, I would sign up for the elite camps at Division I colleges and play with top recruits around the country. In between each camp I participated in high school team camps for volleyball and basketball. It was always my goal to play Division I sports, but not until the high school level is when I truly found the passion for volleyball."

Whether it was traveling to camps, sending highlights to coaches, participating in showcases or trying out for the USA team, Jordan took advantage of the opportunities to get closer to her goal of advancing to the next level of playing collegiate volleyball. On the court, she had a team-first mentality and took no shortcuts.

"I did whatever the coaches needed me to do to better the team whether that was mimicking other teams' offenses to prepare us for the game to even playing a different position," Jordan said. "I came to practice every day with the mindset that no matter what the outcome was the overall goal was to get one percent better either physically or mentally. Overall growing confidence and trust in myself is what made me become the player I am today."

Jordan left a lasting legacy at Alliance High School, having three 100 block seasons including setting the school record for total blocks in a season and career blocks while leading her school to break an 18-year volleyball state championship appearance drought in 2018. Not only was Jordan skilled in volleyball, she was also accomplished in basketball and track and field. In fact, Jordan compiled 12 varsity letters, a feat only four other girls and seven total have accomplished in the school's history.

With more and more high school athletes gravitating towards specializing in one sport, being a multi-sport athlete is becoming less common, but for Jordan it is all she has known.

"Being a multi-sport athlete started when I was very young," Jordan said. "So I do not remember what it was like not playing a sport. Once one season was over, it was most likely the following week the new sport starts up."

Johnson-Lynch says she loves what those who have played more than one sport bring to the program.

"I love multi-sport athletes because, one, they're doing different things throughout the year," Johnson-Lynch said. "Sometimes if you're only playing volleyball, when you show up to college you have these overuse injuries because all you've done is play volleyball. Also because they've had a variety of experiences through the years; they've had to be coached by different styles and personalities and figure out how to get along with different teammates. I think other sports teach you about volleyball and vice versa."

Jordan agrees that playing multiple sports helped her develop as a volleyball player.

"It taught me to compete at a high level not only physically but mentally," Jordan said. "Basketball is a very physical sport that helps with coordination and endurance. Track was a great way to work on my mental side of being an athlete since you are competing against yourself most of the time and it teaches you how to control your emotions during high-stress situations. It helped me develop into becoming a great slide hitter because I was constantly doing one-foot repetitions in both sports. During basketball I remember doing hundreds of layups during practices and in track, high jump is very similar to running a slide. It also helped me by letting different muscles rest and recover when I was taking the time off volleyball to play other sports."

Johnson-Lynch also states these athletes may show up a little behind in their skills, but they typically catch up quick because of their variety of experiences and ability to adapt.

It took some time for her to adjust to playing at the collegiate level, but Jordan pressed on.

"I know she got sick of hearing it, we kept telling her she just had to keep working; she's been patient, she's bided her time," Johnson-Lynch said. "I think she's shown a lot of perseverance because it was going to take a while for her to hone her skills enough to where she could consistently play at this level and that is what she's done."

Through all the challenges, Johnson-Lynch credits Jordan's persistence.

"I would call it patience for sure," Johnson-Lynch said. "Especially these days it's hard for student-athletes to hang in there for four years. Most bail before then but she has stuck it out and it's been really hard for her to go through that process. She did a tremendous job of even through the adversity, disappointments and frustrations to keep at it. She really had a breakthrough this year. She took off and really hasn't looked back. I'm thrilled for her because when you see someone stick it out that long you pull for them and hope that things work out and it's paid off for her."

Now in her senior season, Hopp has totaled 143 kills at a commanding .358 hitting percentage while leading Iowa State with 78 total blocks. Jordan knew what she was capable of, writing "I want to be one of the best volleyball players I can be, and I know I can achieve my goals going to Iowa State," after making the decision to commit to Iowa State in high school, and has stuck to believing in herself through her Cyclone journey.

"College sports take time and patience to be great," Jordan said. "Having patience and trusting the process is something that I stuck to. Development takes time and effort but if you have patience and believe in yourself, good things will come from that."

Seven Nebraska players each made at least one 3-pointer. The Cornhuskers finished 11-of-30 shooting from long range and 27 of 56 (48%) overall.

RAPID CITY, S.D. -- The Chadron State College volleyball team fell 3-1 against the Hardrockers from South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, Saturday night, 25-13, 22-25, 25-16, and 25-21, but clinched its first playoff berth since 2003 in the process.

The loss drops CSC to 14-11 overall and 7-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play but they remain in sixth place.

The first RMAC playoff berth by CSC volleyball since 2003 may not look guaranteed when looking at the RMAC standings, but if CSC Sports Information office's math is correct, a playoff berth is guaranteed.

Chadron State hosts New Mexico Highlands on Friday night, who they defeated in three sets earlier this season. An in-depth breakdown of playoff seeding will be provided in the preview article for that match.

In short, due to Fort Lewis and Colorado Mines still having a match against each other remaining, no matter what the results of next weekends contests are, Chadron State will remain a top eight team in the RMAC.

Saturday, South Dakota Mines hit a season high .374 in the victory compared to CSC's .182.

Mayson Fago, a senior from Evans, Colorado led the Eagles offensively at the net with 13 kills while hitting .273. Lexi Hurtado added nine kills while Bella Adams and Aiyana Fujiyama each had seven and hit .429. The Hardrockers were led by Ivy Vindivich with 19 and Alessandra Meoni with 18 kills.

CSC's setters, Kendyl Kirkwood and Rylee Ward, had 20 and 11 assists, respectively.

Defensively, Alondra Hernandez, a junior from Provo, Utah, had a team high 16 digs while Fujiyama, a junior from Wahiawa, Hawaii had four blocks.

The matchup with New Mexico Highlands begins at 4 p.m., on Saturday. CSC Volleyball seniors will be honored at the match.

Virtually official: CSC volleyball appears headed to RMAC playoffs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team fought back from an 0-2 deficit to beat No. 16 Penn State 3-2 at Rec Hall on Friday night.&nbsp;

In front of the largest Penn State home crowd in 20 years (6,645), the Huskers stormed back after dropping the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-23. Nebraska turned it around in sets three and four, winning 25-18 and 25-20. In the fifth set, the Huskers led 8-3 but allowed Penn State to come back and tie the score, and it remained tied at 13-13 before Harper Murray and Merritt Beason recorded back-to-back kills to win the match and help the Huskers (22-0, 13-0 Big Ten) remain unbeaten. Penn State fell to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in the Big Ten.&nbsp;

The last time the Huskers came back from an 0-2 deficit to win in five sets was on March 12, 2021 against Ohio State at the Devaney Center. The last time the Huskers accomplished that feat in a true road match was Sept. 6, 2018 at Creighton. The Huskers won their seventh match in a row against Penn State.&nbsp;

Beason had a career-high 27 kills on .426 hitting with five digs and three blocks. Her 27 kills tied Mikaela Foecke's 27 kills in 2018 as the most by a Husker since 2013.&nbsp;

Murray finished with 15 kills and 14 digs and hit .379. Bekka Allick had a season-high 11 kills with a .381 hitting percentage and a team-high five blocks. Andi Jackson provided nine kills on .389 hitting with three blocks, and Ally Batenhorst finished with seven kills and four blocks.&nbsp;

Bergen Reilly set the Huskers to a .288 hitting percentage with 52 assists and 13 digs. Lexi Rodriguez had 13 digs and a career-high 11 set assists.&nbsp;

Penn State hit .298 for the match and had a 17-9 edge in blocks. But the Huskers had 12 more kills (71-59) and six more digs (56-50). NU served two aces and wasn't aced by the Nittany Lions all night. Both teams had 12 service errors.&nbsp;

Jezz Mruzik had 21 kills for Penn State.&nbsp;

With a 23-0 (14-0 Big Ten) record, the Huskers have equaled the 2006 team that began the season with 23 straight wins. The 2005 Huskers started the year 28-0.&nbsp;

Merritt Beason continued her monstrous weekend with 21 kills, nine digs and five blocks with a .475 hitting percentage. Combined with her career-high 27 kills at Penn State on Friday night, Beason totaled 48 kills for an average of 6.00 kills per set on a .447 hitting percentage on the weekend. Her 21 kills in Sunday's sweep tied Kelsey Robinson for the most by a Husker in a three-set match in the 25-point rally-scoring era (since 2008).&nbsp;

Ally Batenhorst added 11 kills and seven digs, while Bekka Allick posted seven kills and five blocks and Andi Jackson tallied seven kills on .467 hitting. Harper Murray contributed six kills and seven digs.&nbsp;
